Traveler Reviews

Not very professional and one of the buses was very old. They did not call out the stops and one of the drivers was very cranky!

Very tricky to find the 1st stop. Not near Dong bank but instead Liberty Hotel. Not really near the park section. More near the food court. Was good with timings of pickup but the information on speaker sometimes wasn't clear to which building it was talking about. On one of the journeys it was apparently lunch break so we went to depot..had to wait 1/2 hr before we went again...the wifi on the bus is very helpful

Apparently this is quite a new service in Ho Ci Minh. The headphone system didn’t work however they played the commentary over the speakers. Amazingly the bus was always where they were supposed to be at the scheduled time. Good way to get a feel for where things are in the city.

Great trip, good to do a round route first to get the bearings, saw some wonderful things.......

The pick up spot is difficult to find for a new traveler in the country who didn't speak the language.

Extremely nice bus and very friendly staff.

Public bus transportation in ho chi minh city.

public-bus-transportation-in-ho-chi-minh-city

You can choose from many types of transportation in Ho Chi Minh City to get around. With over 100 routes, the public bus is one of the cheapest vehicles to explore the city on a budget. Check out our guide below to learn how to catch the bus and some popular routes to the famous attractions of Ho Chi Minh City .

How to Catch a Bus in Ho Chi Minh City

Bus stops in ho chi minh city.

When waiting at the bus stops, you must watch for your incoming bus number and wave to signal the driver that you want to get on it. As the streets in Ho Chi Minh City are relatively narrow with many vehicles, the bus may pass any bus stop if you don’t give a signal wave from afar. It would help if you got on the bus from the front door. Some older buses may have broken doors, so you can get on from the back instead.

Paying for the bus fare

If no assistant is on board, buy the ticket from the bus assistant or the driver. You can give the money directly to them or put it in a box next to the driver and receive a ticket from them or the machine. The fare usually varies from VND 7,000 to VND 40,000 depending on the type of bus and distance. Note that they only accept Vietnamese Dong.

Getting off the bus

When the bus closes to the next arrival station, the bus assistant may or may not announce the next stop. If you are not sure, you can tell the bus assistant or driver in advance where you want to be dropped off. When the bus is about 20 meters from your stop, press the red button on top of the door or at a seat near you, or tell the driver and assistant directly because they may drive on without stopping.

Some tips for the passengers

  • Catch the right bus. Check the bus number and the direction the bus is heading – towards the last stop or back to the first stop.
  • You should get on and get off quickly (and carefully!) as some of the bus drivers will not wait for you.
  • Watch for motorbikes driving near the bus door when stepping on and off the bus
  • Beware of pickpockets and scams lurking around at bus stops, stations, and on the bus
  • Make sure to check your belongings before getting off the bus.
  • Pay for the bus fare in the exact amount with small changes ( VND 1,000, VND 2,000, and VND 5,000) to save time
  • You might need to pay for an extra ticket if you’re carrying large items or luggage
  • 7 AM – 9 AM and 5 PM – 7 PM are Ho Chi Minh’s rush hours. Most likely, the buses will get overcrowded, and you will have to stand on the bus. You might also get into a traffic jam.
  • Take notes of the location of the safety hammer to break the windows in case of emergencies.
  • See the bus schedule and routes on buyttphcm.com.vn or use the bus map app to find your suitable route.

How to recognize a bus stop in ho chi minh city.

You can recognize the bus stop in Ho Chi Minh City when you see a painted zigzag yellow line on the road next to the pavement. There are some bus stops with steel benches and cover overhangs. However, some stops are only steel posts with information about the bus routes, similar to a street sign.

Different Types of Buses in Ho Chi Minh City

You will notice three coded colors for public bus transportation in Ho Chi Minh City: yellow, green, and blue.

The yellow is for bus transport back and forth from the Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) . They are more modernized, with a capacity of 70 passengers in total (sitting and standing).

Airport bus 109 fare: VND 20,000 Airport bus 119 fare: VND 12,000 (under 5km/route) and VND 20,000 (over 5km/route) Shuttle bus 49 fare: VND 40,000 (29 passengers in total)

The price difference between the green and blue buses is not much, ranging from VND 7,000 to VND 10,000, depending on the routes. However, they are painted with different colors because of the fuel they use. The green buses run on diesel, while the blue ones run on CNG, an environmentally friendly gas fuel. The blue buses also tend to be more significant as they can carry more capacity. However, you will see more green buses running on the streets in Ho Chi Minh City.

There is a new bus line operated by Vingroup Corporation in Vietnam, with the number D4. The bus runs on electricity and stops at multiple locations frequented by Westerners, such as District 2 (or Thu Duc City) and Ben Thanh. Since it is a private-owned bus, the service is friendlier and the seats are more comfortable. There’s wifi on board, and you have other payment options with a Napas ATM card or e-wallets , instead of just small change.

You may find that catching a bus in Vietnam is quite a different experience from other countries. You have to hail the oncoming bus in advance and be conscious of the motorbike madness, and it might not be the most convenient form of transportation yet. However, as the Vietnamese government is investing more in solving traffic issues in major cities, you may find traveling by public bus more convenient and cheaper to travel around .

Pros and cons of public buses in Ho Chi Minh City

Advantages of buses in Ho Chi Minh City include:

  • The bus fare in the city is 5,000 – 40,000 VND (0.25 – 1.75 USD). In comparison to other means of transportation, bus is the cheapest.
  • In Vietnam, especially the hustle and bustle Ho Chi Minh, traffic is a bit crazy so that it is sometimes dangerous for you to go by cyclo, motorbike, or bicycle. Taxi and bus are safer than the mentioned means of transportation.
  • Equipped with air conditioners, sometimes free wifi, sun protection glass, Ho Chi Minh buses are a comfort choice, you can protect yourself from the heat of the sun and heavy rain. Just hop on a bus, take a rest until you reach the destination.

There are some disadvantages of getting around the city by bus:

  • You must walk to the bus station and wait for the bus. If you have heavy luggage, do not have so much time, your location is far from the bus station, the sun is strong or it is raining, bus is not a good choice. However, they have built many shelters with roofs at most of the bus stations in the city. To overcome this, you can choose hotels which are near bus stations. For example, you can choose hotels in Bui Vien backpacker area which is a few minutes walking from 23/9 Park Bus Station, or hotels around Ben Thanh Market so that you can walk to Ben Thanh Bus Station. Do not forget to bring hats, caps, or umbrellas.
  • Catching and getting off buses in Ho Chi Minh City is not as easy as in other countries in the world because many buses pass the stops and most of the staffs do not speak English, except for airport buses. The government has tried its best to place English on the signs on buses
  • A few buses in the city are not in very good condition. The government is on its way to change the old buses by new ones.
  • You may be pickpocketed when you are on a bus, at a bus station or when you are catching or getting off a bus. To solve the problem, some buses carry cameras to make sure the passengers are safe from scams.

You can learn more about the information about buses, including all bus routes at the official website of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation: http://buyttphcm.com.vn/en-us/Route .

Install the application Busmap on your smartphone. The application has numerous helpful features including smart navigation guide, view of waiting time at the bus stop, providing detailed information of all bus routes, finding bus stops, and updated with the latest data. At some large bus stations such as Ben Thanh Bus Station, there are screens displaying much helpful information and you can even search the information.

How to catch a bus and get on it?

Bus stations in Ho Chi Minh City can be easily recognized by yellow zigzag lines. Bus shelters with roof and signs are put at most of the bus station in the center. As mentioned above, buses in Ho Chi Minh City may pass some stops and it makes difficult for passengers to catch a bus. The streets are narrow and the buses are often late during rush hours. In order to save time, the drivers may pass some stops if he does not see any passenger or none of the passengers would like to be dropped off at a stop. The drivers do not wait for passengers, but open and shut up the doors quickly.

You should wait for the bus at the bus station and wave the bus from far away to signal the bus driver that you would like to be picked up. You should get on the bus quickly through the front door. Most of the buses only open the front doors for passengers to getting on, the others open both front and back doors.

Get on the bus through the front door

Sometimes the driver let you get on the bus through the back door for some reasons

Tracy’s team will take you to the legendary Cu Chi Tunnels and show you the best parts of this Vietcong base.

How to pay for the bus ticket?

After getting on the bus, you should pay for the bus fare. If there is a conductor, you will pay for her, get the ticket, and find your seat. In case there is no conductor, you must pay for the driver or put the money into a box, then get the ticket as well as the change from him or a machine. Prepare cash in VND and pay the exact amount of the bus fare because sometimes change is not available.

The fare of blue and green buses can be 5,000 VND, 6,000 VND, 7,000 VND, 10,000 VND, the bus fare of yellow buses are 12,000 VND, 20,000 VND, or 40,000 VND. You should bring 2,000 VND, 5,000 VND, 10,000 VND, 20,000 VND notes with you. On yellow airport buses, you can pay in USD if you do not have VND cash. Instead of paying 20,000 VND, you will pay 1 USD for the ticket of Bus #109. Instead of paying 40,000 VND, you will pay 2 USD for the ticket of Bus #109. It is a bit cheaper if you pay in VND.

Pay the bus fare through the conductor

Pay the bus far through the driver

How to get off the bus?

It is easier on yellow airport buses because the staffs speak English and very helpful. You just simply let the staff know where you would like to be dropped off. In the opposite, it is more complex in green and blue public buses because the staffs do not speak English and sometimes are not very helpful.

On public green and blue buses, you should let the conductor know about your destination so that she can help you. Prepare a note written the location on it and show her the note because she does not understand English. If you know the bus stop, you should let the conductor or driver know when the bus is about 100 meters from the stop. In many buses, there are red buttons so that passengers can press them to request the stop when the bus is about 20 meters from the stop. Quickly get off the bus through the back doors because the driver does not wait for you.

Get off the bus through the back door

How to be safe on a bus?

You may encounter some problems at crowded and busy bus stations, especially large bus stations such as Ben Thanh, 23/9, Cholon, Mien Dong, and Mien Tay Bus Stations. When you get on and off a bus, be careful of the crazy traffic, especially motorbike madness. Sometimes there are many motorbike taxis gather at the back doors to catch customers when the buses stop at the stations.

In fact, pickpockets and snatch thieves are popular at bus stations and even on the buses in Ho Chi Minh. However, pickpocket and snatch theft are popular in many countries, including developing countries. Ho Chi Minh government is on its way to make bus the best mean of transportation in the city. Why Ho Chi Minh City Is a Must-See Destination

L ovely Vietnam has too many visit-worthy destinations to count. But if you're in the mood for a large, modern city that pulsates with uncontainable energy, head to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, this was once the capital of French Indochina, as well as South Vietnam.

After the end of the Vietnam War, Hanoi became the capital, but Ho Chi Minh has remained the country's economic center. Spend your time here admiring the beautiful French colonial architecture while learning about its complex and difficult history. Visiting landmarks like the sobering War Remnants Museum, the Cu Chi Tunnel and Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon is a must.

While you tour, take frequent breaks to enjoy the delicious and unique Vietnamese coffee styles that include spins like egg coffee and yogurt coffee — trust us, they are amazingly good. Of course, the food will not disappoint. It's difficult to have a bad meal in Vietnam. And though there are various fine dining establishments here, you  have  to try the street food. Think of us while you're sitting on a plastic stool eating the best soup you've ever had in your life.

How to Get to Ho Chi Minh City

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the only aviation hub that services Ho Chi Minh City. It's also the largest airport in Vietnam.

When you  fly into Ho Chi Minh , you can take a bus from the airport to the city center. This service is very cheap. But if convenience is important, taxis are readily available.

Once in the city, you can move around by hailing tuk-tuks on the street. Or download Grab, a ride-sharing app similar to Uber.

Must see place

It's not easy for us to visit all the museum as lot of harrowing things. But it's part of this beautiful past. So impressive that Vietnam has been developing well after the war and be good friend to its all ever enemies.

Layout of museum was relatively good and was very informative regarding American war crimes and the tragic effects of agent Orange. As expected, no mention of VC or PAVN war crimes, giving the impression that it was only the Americans committing war crimes.

We spent 3 hours here today. So sad but needed to see and understand. It was worth paying extra for the audio guide. So So hot inside the building though. Needs air con and not just the fans they were using. Almost unbearable with the amount of people.

city tour ho chi minh bus

Harrowing but interesting and important to understand. Its a strange museum for a holiday but understanding the history of the country feels important so it's a must see Only issue is the fans don't do enough the building really needs some air con.

Its an eye opener to the horrors of war however one i feel sees one side of the story just the same war is a tragedy no matter where and when and by seeing this one can only hope human nature betters itself all be it the world still fights wars.

So moving. A must-see! I was glad it was at the end of our day, as I was emotionally exhausted after spending around 2 hours at this museum. Easy to do independently. Guides are not allowed in the museum to preserve the solemn environment. Take your time to read all of the information that comes with the photos and exhibits.
