Plot a course for the best autumn destinations on the water.

Fall foliage may only be around for a few weeks, but the brilliant colors that illuminate both city and countryside invite travelers to make the most of the season. You can see fall foliage on a road trip or from a train window, but one of the best ways to experience autumn is by cruise.

Highlighting the rolling hills and mountains of New England, the craggy coastlines of Alaska, or picturesque Quebec cities, these are some of the best cruise routes you can take to soak up the beautiful, quickly changing fall foliage.

Royal Caribbean's fall foliage northbound cruise; 11 nights

Cruise ship :  Jewel of the Seas

Cost : Starting at $949/person

Capacity : 2,702 guests

Why you should go : This late September cruise leaves from Cape Liberty port in New Jersey and heads north, allowing you to take advantage of the seasonal foliage as you make your way toward Quebec City , a perfect historic setting in which to watch the leaves change. On board, get an elevated view of the multicolored leaves by climbing to the top of the rock wall or embrace the cooler weather with a poolside movie.

Princess Cruises' Canada and New England sailing; 7 days

Cruise ship: Emerald Princess

Cost : Starting at $468/person

Capacity : 3,080 guests

Why you should go : Starting from your port of call in New York City, this fall foliage cruise leaves in late October. It will take you up the coast past Newport, Rhode Island where you’ll be treated to panoramic views and golden leaves all around. During a stop in Halifax, Canada, you can check out the coast and, of course, dine on butter-soaked lobster. While on board, watch the world go by from the outdoor deck with a hot chocolate in hand.

Carnival Cruise Line's Canada and New England journey from New York; 7 days

Cruise ship :  Carnival Venezia

Cost : Starting at $519/person

Capacity : 4,090 guests

Why you should go : In September, enjoy the changing colors as you sail from the Big Apple toward Portland, Maine, and Canada’s Saint John. Watch the leaves turn yellow, orange, and red as you meander around these quaint towns. On the Venezia, you also get to sail in the ship's signature "Fun Italian Style," with Venice-inspired decor, plus lots of Italian restaurants and menu items.

Holland America's Atlantic Coast cruise; 10 days

Cruise ship : Zuiderdam

Cost : Starting at $599/person

Capacity : 1,964 guests

Why you should go : Travel from the vibrant fall colors of Quebec to the warm, sunny shores of Florida with this cruise that will give you the best of the East Coast over 10 days. Start in Montreal, Canada, to soak up the city’s October atmosphere and feast on French specialties like macarons, before making your way down the coast and past the warm hues of the changing countryside. Disembark in Fort Lauderdale where the weather tends to be in the mid-to-high 80s in October, and end the cruise with some quality beach time.

Cunard's New England and Canada cruise; 7 Nights

Cruise ship :  Queen Mary 2

Cost : Starting at $799/person

Capacity : 2,691 guests

Why you should go : This late-September cruise will take you from New York City to the fall foliage and crisp air of Halifax, where your autumn adventure starts. You'll follow the colorful coastline through Sept-Iles and Saguenay, before finishing out the peaceful week in Quebec City. On the ship, watch performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company and indulge in dishes like croquettes of suckling pig and Dover sole meunière.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Autumn on the Frontier; 7 nights

Tan Yilmaz/Getty Images

Cruise ship :  Seven Seas Explorer

Why you should go : Not just the land of ice and snow, Alaska is an underrated destination for fall foliage. This cruise sets off in the northern city of Seward and makes a detour to the waters around the Hubbard Glacier, before turning inward toward Juneau and finishing up in Vancouver, British Columbia . You can watch the changing scenery from your room’s private balcony and indulge in excursions like a  wilderness sea kayaking  adventure in Sitka, Alaska, and rain forest bicycle tours in Skagway.

Best Fall Foliage Cruise Destinations

  • Find a Cruise

One of the best ways to enjoy the breathtaking hues of the changing of the seasons is on a fall foliage cruise across New England and Canada. Aside from the crisp air and the cozy sweater weather, the colorful transformation of the trees is one of the top reasons why fall is so magical.

Board either Celebrity Silhouette or Celebrity Eclipse in August or September when both cruise along the Northeast coast. You’ll be able to spot the vivid greens and, later in September, the stunning reds, brilliant oranges, and mustard yellows that decorate the landscape.

Aside from giving you a prime seat to enjoy the beautiful scenery (which is especially gorgeous when it’s reflected in the water below), our fall foliage cruises visit a number of fascinating destinations along the way.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts, one of the best fall foliage cruise destinations

Your fall foliage cruise kicks off in Boston , an exciting city packed with culture, famed for its world-class universities, colorful history, and diverse neighborhoods.

Spending one day in Boston is enough to explore America’s past by visiting Revolutionary War battlefields and learning about Paul Revere’s daring midnight ride.

Immerse yourself in American history by following the two-and-a-half-mile Freedom Trail, marked by a red line on the sidewalk. You’ll pass Boston Common, Bunker Hill Monument, and Paul Revere’s house. Head to the waterfront to see the old Boston Tea Party ships.

Exterior of Quincy Market in Boston, Massachusetts

Quincy Market in Boston, Massachusetts

Shop for gifts at the legendary Quincy Market in downtown Boston and make time to explore the different neighborhoods, from swanky Beacon Hill to North End, famed for its Italian food scene.

Cross the Charles River and arrive in Cambridge, where the fall weather and the Ivy League students mingling in Harvard Square will make you nostalgic for your college days.

Rockland, Maine

Fall foliage cruise - Rockland, Maine

Pretty Rockland calls itself the “lobster capital of the world,” and justifiably so. You’ll find fresh lobster everywhere from fine dining restaurants to food trucks, and you can even join a local fishing boat to see how the tasty crustaceans are caught.

Or perhaps embark on a guided foodie walking tour on which you’ll sample artisanal cheeses and pastries, as well as seafood and locally brewed craft beer.

Rockland itself is a quintessential New England town set around a protected harbor that’s framed by rocky headlands and old-growth forest.

This is an especially artistic community, and there are some excellent galleries to check out. The Farnsworth Art Museum is one, showcasing the work of Maine-based artists.

Facade of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

There are plenty of things to do in Rockland to enjoy the great outdoors, too. The Rockland Harbor Trail traces the shoreline, with sweeping views of the coast and those vast Maine skies. Stroll along the almost mile-long granite breakwater to the old Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which has stood here since 1902, looking out for seals.

Waterfront of Camden

Rockland is a great base from which to explore the wooded countryside and coastline. Take a trip to the exquisite little coastal town of Camden, packed with quaint shops and galleries, and head up to the summit of Mount Battie for spectacular views down over Penobscot Bay. When the trees are sporting their fall colors, this vista is even more magnificent.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Picturesque seascape in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Peggy’s Cove in Halifax, Nova Scotia

In Halifax , the capital of Nova Scotia, you’ll be surrounded by spectacular views of the changing leaves as fall sets in. But at any time of year, this is a fascinating port to visit, with a rich cultural scene.

There’s a strong Scottish influence here, as thousands of Scots emigrated to the New World, bringing their culture with them, including their brewing skills.

There are museums and galleries to explore; check out the fascinating and often moving Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 and the Maritime Museum of The Atlantic.

This houses an important collection of Titanic artifacts and memorabilia; Halifax is where the survivors of the disaster were brought, and where several of the victims are buried.

Food at a restaurant in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Restaurant in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax has a buzzing culinary scene, too. Try crab cakes, fish and chips, and creamy East Coast Chowder, as well as poutine, Canada’s famous comfort food of fries topped with cheese curds and gravy.

Head for the Saturday farmer’s market on Lower Water Street to pick up authentic souvenirs, from sea glass jewelry to maple syrup, local art, and even lobster-shaped gummies.

If you’d like to explore the surrounding countryside, one of the best things to do in Halifax is to go on a drive through the city’s scenic lighthouse route towards Peggy’s Cove, a tiny fishing village that is the site of Canada’s most photographed lighthouse.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

Lush Cabot trail with hills view in autumn

Cabot Trail in Sydney, Nova Scotia

The small port city of Sydney is full of beautiful coastal vistas, historic sites, and vibrant nature walks. Learn all about its famous landmarks and culture during a walking tour of Old Sydney.

Check out the Cape Breton Miners’ Museum to learn how coal mining shaped this community. You can even head down the old mine to gain a sense of what it was like to work there.

For an undeniably picturesque view of the city, drive through the countryside, where you’ll pass by Cabot Trail’s lush hills, the Louisbourg Lighthouse, and St. Ann’s Bay.

If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, head to the quaint town of Baddeck, the former summer home of Scottish scientist Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone.

From there, admire the serene view of the surrounding Bras d’Or Lake. You can learn more about Bell in the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, which is full of artifacts relating to his great invention.

Quebec City, Quebec

Landscape view of Old Quebec City including Chateau Frontenac

Chateau Frontenac, Old Quebec City

Brush up on your French skills in Quebec City , the captivating capital of Quebec, lying on the St. Lawrence River. Feel as though you’ve stepped back in time as you walk through the cobbled lanes of Old Quebec and enjoy delectable French cuisine, from crepes to crusty baguettes.

One of the best things to do in Quebec City is to head up Cape Diamond to admire the iconic Chateau Frontenac. Built in 1893, it’s said to be the most photographed hotel in the world, thanks to its intricate beauty. Nearby is the massive Citadel, with wonderful views over the city.

Street view of Rue du Petit-Champlain, Quebec City

Rue du Petit-Champlain, Quebec City

Shop for souvenirs in the 400-year-old Place Royale and explore the Rue du Petit-Champlain for crafts and local fashions. Remember to pick up some maple syrup as a memento of your time in Canada.

To best experience the warm colors of Quebec City in the fall , journey down the St. Lawrence River and marvel at the scenery awash in autumn hues on your way to Canyon Sainte-Anne, a verdant gorge that really comes alive during the fall.

Check out the thundering Montmorency Falls, where you can tackle a via ferrata trail and a zipline.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Scenic landscape of Charlottetown

Wander through the seaside cliffs and expansive green hills of Charlottetown . This small, picturesque town is located on Prince Edward Island amid a landscape of vast beaches, craggy cliffs, and rolling farmland.

On a panoramic drive through Charlottetown, you won’t be able to stop taking pictures of all the wonderful sights, including the town’s signature red and white lighthouses and the unspoiled beauty of Prince Edward Island National Park.

Look out for the adorable Anne of Green Gables House, the place that inspired the story of the red-haired heroine. A great way to do this city tour is by wagon, pulled by two majestic draft horses.

Stop to refuel on some of Prince Edward Island’s specialties, lobster and oysters. Because this is a rural farming community, you’ll find delicious farm-to-table cuisine wherever you go.

Portland, Maine

Fall foliage cruise - Portland, Maine

Portland Head Light, Maine

A fishing port since 1632, Portland, Maine has a rich history. The city perches on a peninsula with views of Casco Bay, dotted with rocky islands.

The famous Portland Head Light guards the shoreline from Fort Williams Park and has protected ships and their crews since 1791. Today, you can tour the old keepers’ quarters and learn about the vital role played by Maine’s lighthouses.

Portland’s downtown area is characterized by 19th-century warehouses and old brick buildings, many of them repurposed as cool restaurants and bars. Join a culinary walking tour to sample fresh lobster as well as cider and Maine wines.

View from the Eastern Promenade Trail in Portland, Maine

Eastern Promenade Trail in Portland, Maine

Experience the rugged coastline of Portland on a biking shore excursion. Pedal along the Eastern Promenade Trail, a waterfront path with stunning harbor and ocean views.

Pass by Bug Light, a 26-foot-tall lighthouse, and Fort Gorges, a former military fort located on Casco Bay. End your journey at Mackworth Island, where you’ll get to admire Maine’s fall foliage and its beautiful views.

Can’t wait to see the stunning autumn scenery for yourself? Book your cruise to New England and Canada on one of our sleek, contemporary ships. Start planning your fall color cruise today.

New England Cruises | Enjoy Fall Foliage From The Water

New England is famous for its colorful fall foliage, which draws thousands of visitors (or “leaf peepers,” as they’re affectionately known) to every corner of its diverse landscape each year. It seems that most of these tourists line country roads and flock to hilly foliage hotspots to admire the fall colors, but a lesser number know to take advantage of New England’s many bodies of water for foliage cruises, which often offer even more spectacular views that are only accessible by boat. Here’s a list of sixteen New England cruises that promise to give you a new perspective on classic fall foliage. The list includes jaunts along rugged shorelines, journeys up and down rivers, and treks across mountain-lined lakes.

New England Fall Foliage Cruises and Boat Tours

color tour cruise

New England is the holy grail of fall foliage in the U.S. , and one of the best ways to view it is from the water. The Northeast is abundant with lakes and rivers, lined with shade-shifting sugar maples, red oaks, and dogwood trees. Come mid-October, their leaves will put on an unrivaled spectacle of orange, crimson, and gold. Hop on one of the region's countless boat tours and cruises for an up-close look.

In 2020, many tours and cruises have been canceled or altered. Check the websites of organizers for updated information.

Cruise Lines With New England Itineraries

Several major cruise lines offer New England and Canada sailing itineraries that coincide with peak fall foliage times. The routes are typically similar, but durations vary between six and 14 days. These cruises hug the Atlantic coastline: Some visit the Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia, while others travel to or from Quebec ports via the St. Lawrence River.

  • Celebrity Cruises : The Celebrity Summit travels from Boston to Portland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec City, and back over 12 days. These cruises depart periodically, but the best one to board for top views of foliage sets sail in early October.
  • Holland America : Bar Harbor, Prince Edward Island, Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, and Nova Scotia are stops on this seven- or 14-day excursion. On shore, you can take a horse-drawn carriage through Maine's autumnal Acadia National Park.
  • Norwegian Cruise Lines : NCL offers seven-, nine-, and 10-day cruises from Boston (or New York City) to Canada, some including ashore time in Portland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and ports in Quebec.
  • Princess Cruises : Fabulous fall foliage sights are provided on the deck of your Princess ship when you choose a five- to 24-day cruise to ports like Quebec City, Halifax, Bar Harbor, and Newport.
  • Royal Caribbean : Royal Caribbean offers a vast variety of Canada and New England cruise itineraries, sailing from New Jersey, Montreal, or Quebec City. Ports of call include Bar Harbor, Portland, New Brunswick, Halifax, and Prince Edward Island.

Fall Boat Tours in Connecticut

Both the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound offer prime, foliage-packed cruising options.

  • Cross Sound Ferry Lighthouse Cruises :   Leaf peeping is a side note on this Sea Jet cruise, which provides a narrated tour of eight New England lighthouses. Still, though, you'll see ample color decorating the Connecticut shore. The top deck is an ideal location for picture taking. In 2020, Cross Sound Ferry's fall lighthouse cruises have been suspended.
  • Essex Steam Train & Riverboat :   Though organized by a steam train company, the one-hour, 15-minute Becky Tatcher Riverboat cruise is one of Connecticut's most beloved. First, you travel by old-school locomotive for an hour to Deep River Landing, where you board the tri-level riverboat for a voyage showcasing Gillette Castle, Goodspeed Opera House, the Haddam Swing Bridge, and the pristine nature along the water's edge.
  • Lady Katharine Sunday Brunch Cruises :   Take your leaf peeping with brunch and live entertainment aboard the Mystique, departing from Haddam, Middletown, or Hartford. In 2020, Lady Katharine's Brunch Cruises have been canceled.

Fall Boat Tour in Rhode Island

Blackstone Valley Explorer Riverboat Tours  hosts boat trips along Rhode Island's Blackstone River, the scenic and historic waterway that once powered America's Industrial Revolution. Tours center around birding, storytelling, and sometimes even food. Trips are usually offered on Sunday afternoons through late October. However, no dates have been set for the fall 2020 season.

Fall Boat Tours in New Hampshire

Board the  M/S Mount Washington  for a graceful jaunt along Lake Winnipesaukee, surrounded by trees for optimal leaf peeping. The boat departs from Weirs Beach, Wolfeboro, and Alton Bay. There's either a two-and-a-half-hour Sunday champagne brunch cruise for morning people or a two-hour evening foliage dinner cruise for night owls. In 2020, fall cruises have been suspended.

Fall Boat Tours in Maine

A fall cruise in Maine will make you choose between zoning in on shade-shifting leaves or passing seals. You can board a humble Hardy Boat for an hour-and-a-half lesson on local nature and history, or a bigger schooner belonging to the Maine Windjammer Association. These antique vessels offer two- to six-day fall foliage cruises in September and early October.

The best fall foliage cruises in the U.S.

From dedicated voyages to afternoons on the water, the best fall foliage cruises in America offer up a delightful way to peep the changing leaves

Lauren Dana

Fall is here, which means apple-picking opportunities abound, pumpkin spice lattes are officially back in season and wrapping yourself in a scarf large enough to double as a blanket is acceptable. But perhaps the best part of the season is the vibrant foliage that comes with it. All across the country, leaves transform color (think burnt reds, rusty oranges, brilliant coppers and bright yellows). The best way to experience the changing of the seasons is from out on the water, offering expansive views of the fall hues plus the surrounding landscapes, be it tree-lined mountains, valleys, or stunning stretches of coast. Short hours-long sailings in major cities like Boston and New York to longer 12-day voyages that cross into Canada, here are the best fall foliage cruises to book this season.

Then, it’s off to Canada with an overnight in Halifax, Nova Scotia, followed by stops in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Saguenay, Quebec; Quebec City, Quebec; and Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, before disembarking in magnificent Montreal. Adams, both of which are flooded with vibrant foliage come September and October, right from the bow of the ship. The spectacular ports of call—Astoria, OR (where travelers can savor local beers and oysters while catching a glimpse of the awe-inspiring Cape Disappointment); Walla Walla, WA (where wine tasting opps abound and harvest season is in full swing ); and Clarkston, WA (where you can admire Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge)—are best explored on foot, kayak, Zodiac or jet boat. The itinerary also includes scenic cruising through the Hood River, Columbia River Gorge and the Palouse River.

3.  Charles Riverboat Company’s Fall Foliage Cruises

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Charles Riverboat Company (@charlesriverboatcompany)

Searching for some of the best fall activities in Boston ? Head out on the water and set sail on a 90-minute ride with the Charles Riverboat Company along the Charles River. These foliage-themed cruises offer some of Boston and Cambridge's best (read: most Instagrammable) views. With tickets from $30 per adult, this short but scenic sailing is the most wallet-friendly option on our list. And, since it’s just an hour and a half long, you’ll be back long before dinnertime (may we suggest booking a table at one of Boston’s best new restaurants to cap off the fun-filled day?). This cruise is an excellent option for those tight on time but still craving some fall fun—all without having to leave the city.

Royal Caribbean’s 10-Night Fall Foliage Northbound Cruise

4.  Royal Caribbean’s 10-Night Fall Foliage Northbound Cruise

For a fun-filled fall foliage cruise for the entire family, look no further than this 10-night sailing from Royal Caribbean. The 10-night voyage sails from Cape Liberty, NJ, to Quebec City, Quebec, aboard Jewel of the Seas, offering a rock climbing wall, mini-golf, several pools, state-of-the-art entertainment and many bars and restaurants. Off the ship, explore stunning ports of call like Boston (MA) and Portland (ME) before heading off to some of the most awe-inspiring locales in Canada (Saint John, New Brunswick; Sydney, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Saguaney, Quebec). These destinations feature some of North America's best fall foliage views, thanks to their vast landscapes. While on board, sit back, relax, and take in the breathtaking scenery from the comfort of your stateroom balcony.

Oceania Cruises’ Autumn in Canada & New England

5.  Oceania Cruises’ Autumn in Canada & New England

Oceania Cruises’ aptly named Autumn in Canada & New England itinerary is perfect for passengers eager to catch a glimpse of the region’s changing leaves over the course of 11 days. Upon embarkation from New York, you’ll travel to Newport before cruising the Cape Cod Canal. After, the ship makes its way to Portland, where cruisers can tour Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park. Then it’s off to Canada to visit New Brunswick (Saint John) Nova Scotia (Shelbourne and Sydney, where, in the later, cruisers can take a shore excursion to Cape Breton Island to admire some of North America’s most vibrant foliage coupled with sweeping ocean vistas). The trip's final leg includes Newfoundland (Corner Brook, which features orange, yellow, and bright red-hued leaves in peak season) and Quebec (Saguenay and Quebec City).

City Experiences’ New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise

6.  City Experiences’ New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise

City Experiences’ New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise is among the best fall day trips from New York City . The three-hour cruise, which takes place on October 21, 2023, sails roundtrip from Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers and cruises up the Hudson River. Along the scenic route, passengers can sip cider and savor pumpkin pie while surrounded by seasonal décor, adding to the festive fall vibes. For the best leaf-peeping views, head up to the open-air rooftop lounge— and prepare to be dazzled by the kaleidoscope of autumnal hues. Additional onboard highlights include a buffet lunch, live DJ entertainment and a selection of creative cocktails (additional cost). Oh, and did we mention tickets start at under $100 apiece?

The seven-day voyage—which has fares as low as $429 per person—conveniently sails roundtrip from New York aboard the family-friendly Norwegian Escape, stopping in three other American ports (Newport, Portland and Bar Harbor). From there, the ship sails to Canada (Saint John and Halifax) before returning to The Big Apple. Throughout the weeklong sailing, passengers will have the incredible opportunity to admire the colorful leaves while heading out on bucket-list-worthy excursions like whale-watching and hiking; otherwise, consider more laid-back albeit equally fun activities like shopping or attending an authentic New England lobster bake.

8.  Circle Line’s Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Circle Line Sightseeing (@circlelinenyc)

Circle Line’s Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise is one of the best things to do in NYC this fall . The four-hour cruise—which Circle Line dubbed “New York's floating Oktoberfest”—sails 40 miles up the Hudson River. For the sailing, passengers can enjoy live music and Oktoberfest-themed food like Bavarian pretzels, bratwursts, and pork schnitzel while sipping on German brews. Take in the Instagram-worthy foliage—and breathe in the crisp fall air—from one of the expansive outdoor decks. Cruisers may even spot a bald eagle amongst the colorful trees and mountain landscapes if they're lucky.

Crystal’s New York to Quebec City

9.  Crystal’s New York to Quebec City

Enjoy a New York to Quebec City sailing with luxury cruise line Crystal, which recently relaunched just a few months earlier. This specific eight-night voyage takes place onboard the revamped Crystal Serenity , which calls on Newport, Boston, Halifax (where it will stay overnight), Sydney and Quebec City (where it will also remain overnight before disembarking the following day), In between the Sydney and Quebec City port stops, Serenity will cruise along the tree-lined St. Lawrence River, where the turning of the leaves will be on full display. While the ports of call alone are reason enough to book this voyage, you should also consider that all staterooms have ocean views. Other ship amenities include a fine-dining restaurant helmed by Nobu (yes, that Nobu), a tranquil spa and chic common areas where cruisers can leaf-peep and sip cocktails in style.

10.  Classic Harbor Line’s Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Classic Harbor Line (@classicharborline)

New Yorkers looking for a romantic way to experience the surrounding region’s fall foliage can —and certainly should! —book the Classic Harbor Line Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise. The two-and-a-half-hour sailing takes place aboard an elegant ‘20s-style yacht (either one of two aptly named vessels, the Manhattan or Manhattan II ), making it one of the most glamorous ways to go leaf-peeping. As part of the ticket price, cruisers will enjoy a three-course prix fixe brunch—served at their own private table—and, as a bonus, one complimentary Bloody Mary, mimosa, beer, wine or glass of bubbly. (Cheers!) Lastly, while indoor and outdoor seating is available, keep in mind that it is assigned.

It warms our hearts to go back in time and share with you one of Scotty's foliage reports, accompanied by a beautiful video of Autumn in New England.

5 best fall foliage cruises in New England, Canada and beyond

Erica Silverstein

If your social media feeds are blowing up with beautiful pictures of fall foliage, you're likely feeling the urge to set out on your own leaf-peeping trip. Sure, you could plan an epic road trip, complete with traffic jams and overpriced, overcrowded tourist traps. Or, you could take a fall foliage cruise.

From a cruise ship, you can enjoy the autumnal hues of the Canada and New England coastline as you sail between northeastern U.S. homeports like New York and Boston and Canada's Montreal or Quebec City. Book shore excursions for a more relaxing day out; the bus driver will navigate the traffic along tree-lined byways to scenic vistas, and your mealtimes will be pre-arranged (or held on board your ship's multiple dining venues).

If you'd rather explore fall's colors outside of the Northeast, a few cruise lines will take you to fall foliage destinations in other parts of the U.S., too.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It's likely too late to arrange a 2023 Canada and New England cruise, but channel your FOMO and book your 2024 getaway so next year you can be the one inspiring jealousy with your gorgeous scenic photography. Here, we present the five best fall foliage cruises you should consider in New England, Canada and beyond.

7-day Canada and New England Discovery cruise on Holland America

color tour cruise

Holland America 's 1,964-passenger Zuiderdam is a delightfully midsize ship, so you don't have to worry about crowds as you sail between Boston and Quebec City. The ship starts sailing this route in late August, but for the best leaf peeping you'll want to book one of the two October departures.

Ports of call include Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Portland or Bar Harbor, Maine. Take your pick of scenic drives or strolls through gardens or along hiking paths, camera at the ready. On board, spend your evenings rocking out to live music or enjoying a leisurely meal of steak or seafood at the Pinnacle Grill.

Best for: Holland America attracts mainly retirees and couples who appreciate the line's focus on fine dining and live performances. Zuiderdam's itinerary is ideal for anyone who doesn't mind flying in and out of different cities in order to travel farther north into Canada than the one-way sailings.

7-day Canada and New England cruise on Princess Cruises

color tour cruise

For an easy round-trip New York cruise that leans more into New England than Canada, consider Princess Cruises ' weeklong October sailings on the 3,660-passenger Enchanted Princess. Choose from itineraries with four or five ports, including Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Bar Harbor; Halifax; and (only on certain sailings) Saint John, New Brunswick.

If seascapes are your thing, don't miss the beautiful coastal landscape by the Bay of Fundy (from Saint John) or Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia. Head to the hills in Bar Harbor for elevated views or escape to sea with a harbor cruise from Newport.

Best for: Princess Cruises also attracts mature couples and lovers of classic cruising, but the 2019-debuted Enchanted Princess is much larger and bigger than Holland America's Zuiderdam. Kick back with the line's signature Movies Under the Stars (complete with blankets for fall nights in New England) or enjoy multiple specialty restaurants devoted to Italian specialties, steakhouse fare and seafood. Bundle up for a romantic breakfast on your balcony while the colorful coastline passes by.

7-night Canada cruise on Royal Caribbean

color tour cruise

Combine an easy Boston round-trip sailing with a fall foliage cruise focused more on Canadian than New England ports with Royal Caribbean 's seven-night voyages on the 1,992-passenger Grandeur of the Seas, setting sail throughout October 2024. Most itineraries call in Portland, Maine; Saint John; Sydney; and Halifax.

Grandeur of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's older and smaller ships, so don't go in expecting a humongous megaship with wild top-deck amenities (a good thing or not, depending on your style). You'll still find plenty of dining options (including sushi and teppanyaki hijinks at Izumi), the line's signature circular Viking Crown Lounge and – perfect for fall weather — an indoor, adults-only solarium.

Best for: Royal Caribbean fans seeking a midsize ship experience with fewer children on board should book this cruise. Anyone looking for a round-trip cruise to Canada that doesn't require a passport will appreciate the convenient Boston departure port (with plenty of beautiful fall foliage on its own) and three ports calls in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

7-night Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise on American Cruise Lines

color tour cruise

Canada and New England aren't the only regions of the U.S. known for their fall foliage. American Cruise Lines offers several small-ship sailings in October to other leaf-peeping regions, including the Hudson River Valley, the Upper Mississippi and the Chesapeake Bay.

But for something completely different, why not try the line's seven-night Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise, round-trip from Seattle on the 90-passenger American Spirit and 170-passenger American Constellation?

Your itinerary will take you to Anacortes, Friday Harbor, Port Angeles (gateway to Victoria, British Columbia, and Olympic National Park), Port Townsend and Poulsbo, Washington, with a day spent cruising around the San Juan Islands. Take advantage of the Fidalgo Island walking trails near Anacortes and don't miss the photogenic Deception Pass nearby. Gaze at the Olympic and Cascade mountains in their fall glory and enjoy the fall weather in historic waterfront towns.

Best for: Travelers looking for a different destination for their fall foliage cruise, but also cruisers who prioritize time on shore over time on the ship. American Cruise Lines' ships are tiny, just four to six decks, with amenities limited to a restaurant, a couple of lounges, small fitness areas and sun deck, perhaps with a putting green. Be prepared to entertain yourself in the evenings — or go to bed early so you're energized for a full day in port nearly every day. Also, know that these ships generally draw an older, retiree crowd.

12-day Canada and New England Fall Foliage cruise on Seabourn

color tour cruise

Smaller ships can visit more off-the-beaten-path ports than their big-ship counterparts. Seabourn 's 458-passenger Seabourn Quest sails 12-day cruises between New York and Montreal, stopping in Trois-Rivieres and Saguenay, Quebec, with scenic cruising along the Saguenay Fjord. The ship also visits Quebec City, Charlottetown, Halifax, Boston and Provincetown, Massachusetts.

This is also one of the best fall foliage cruises if you're looking for an all-inclusive voyage in luxurious surroundings. On Seabourn Quest, every cabin is a suite with a view (not to mention a walk-in closet and spacious bathroom with tub). You can enjoy gourmet cuisine by Thomas Keller, complimentary wine and cocktails, and a friendly crew that will go above and beyond for you.

Best for: Luxury lovers who wish to be pampered on their leaf-peeping vacation will enjoy this nearly two-week cruise around Canada and New England. The extended itinerary features several days at sea to enjoy the ship's spa or delicious afternoon tea service, as well as some lesser-visited ports and an overnight in Halifax. It's ideal for travelers who want to make the most of their fall Northeast trip.

Bottom line

You might be surprised how much choice you have for late-September and October fall foliage cruises. In addition to Seabourn, all the major luxury cruise lines dedicate a few cruises to this region — including such lines as Silversea Cruises , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Windstar Cruises , Oceania Cruises and Crystal . Big ships like NCL's Norwegian Breakaway also get into the leaf-peeping action.

Here, we've picked the best fall foliage cruises for different itinerary configurations and ship styles. They might be our favorites, but only you know which combination of ports and onboard experience is the perfect match for your travel style.

Cruise The Breezeway For Stunning Fall Color In 2023

Autumn in northern Michigan is a magical time of year. The landscape is awash in brilliant red, yellow and orange foliage. Looking for a scenic drive to view the colors? The Breezeway, a rural route that connects Atwood to Boyne Falls, is lined with colorful trees during the fall. So grab your camera, gas up the car and head out for the Breezeway Fall Color Tour!

The Breezeway, or C-48, is a 25 mile rural drive that winds past farms, fields and forests. You’ll journey through the towns of Ellsworth, East Jordan and Boyne Falls. There are plenty of opportunities to explore gift stores, antique shops, farm markets, restaurants, scenic overlooks, parks and hiking trails.

Keep an eye out for mile markers along the roadside. They feature the Breezeway logo and correspond to attractions listed on tourist maps.

The Breezeway Fall Color Tour in Northern Michigan

The annual Breezeway Color Cruise is always held the the last Saturday in September and the first two Saturdays in October. If you go on an official tour day, you’ll be able to pick up a goodie bag filled with the trail map, travel tips and coupons. (Due to our schedule, we cruised the Breezeway on the last Saturday of September. The colors were just getting started, making us wish we’d been able to take the tour a week or two later) You can travel along at your own pace, stopping as along the way as much or as little as you’d like.

Breezeway Fall Color Tour: Begin At Royal Farms Winery

The Breezeway Fall Color Tour begins at Royal Farms Farm Market in Northern Michigan

First stop on your Breezeway fall color tour? Royal Farms Farm Market And Winery, located at the intersection of US-31 and C-48 in the small town of Atwood. This is where you’ll check in between 10:00 am and n00n, pick up your trail map, travel tips and coupons. Plan on spending some time at this family-owned farm market and tasting room before cruising out along the Breezeway.

Royal Farms is popular with locals for miles around. Their market is loaded with seasonal fruits and vegetables. You can pick your own cherries, peaches and apples when in these fruits are in season. Homemade pie is a huge draw, as well as breads, cookies, brownies and other goodies baked on-site in the bakery. We’re huge fans of the focaccia bread and cherry chocolate macaroons.

Apples are available for purchase at Royal Farms Market during the Breezeway Fall Color Tour

If you happen to be checking in at lunch time, you can enjoy items like asparagus soup, a cherry chicken salad wrap or white cheddar mac and cheese. In the autumn, top it all off with cider and donuts.

The Cellars of Royal Farms uses fresh fruit right from the farm for making wine and cider. The Tasting Room features assorted hard ciders on tap made from vintage apple varieties. You can even purchase a bottle of semi-sweet white wine named for this famous roadway: The Breezeway!

And don’t miss the gift shop, where a wide array of cherry products, local honey and maple syrup awaits. Not to mention a huge assortment of cherry-related items, including jewelry, towels, puzzles, and candles.

An absolute must: navigating your way through Royal Farm’s five acre corn maze. It’s set up like a scavenger hunt, with six stations hidden inside. Those trailblazers who make it to all six stations in under 30 minutes win a prize! (full disclosure: we did not win a prize. Maybe because we hit the tasting room before venturing into the corn?)

Get lost in the corn maze at Royal Farms Farm Market

Royal Farms also offers hay rides on the weekends during the fall. It’s great way to take in the orchards and vineyards, topped off with a spectacular view of Lake Michigan.

We drove away with a big bag of Honeycrisp apples, some blueberry scones for breakfast the next day, and two colorful mums for our front porch. And this was only stop one!

Find out all that Royal Farms has to offer on the Royal Farms Farm Market website.

Royal Farms Tasting Room

Continue your Breezeway Fall Color Tour by hopping on C-48 and proceeding east toward Ellsworth.

As you make your way past a patchwork of farms and fields, keep an eye out for a series of rolling, tear-drop shaped hills. These hills, called drumlins, were created by the glaciers that covered Michigan 10,000 years ago. They formed from sediments left behind as the glaciers retreated. Drumlins are parallel to each other, separated by troughs. You’ll know that you’re crossing the drumlin fields when the Breezeway gives you the sensation of riding on a roller coaster!

Ellsworth Community Park

Looking out over Ellsworth Lake during The Breezeway Fall Color Tour

You’ll know you’re in Ellsworth when you spot the huge grain elevator as you come into town. Stretch your legs in the Ellsworth Community Park, right in the heart of the village. This park overlooks Ellsworth Lake and offers an archery range, playground and a picnic pavilion.

The centerpiece of the park is the Ellsworth Labyrinth Garden. Labyrinths are a series of paths laid out in concentric circles and are designed for meditation. First unveiled in 2004, the Ellsworth Labyrinth was the largest labyrinth in Michigan at the time.

Ellsworth Labyrinth in Northern Michigan

Head for the giant Adirondack chair at the entrance of the labyrinth for a great photo op. Then take the time to quiet your mind as you walk the path and breath in the scent of the  fragrant creeping thyme planted between the path’s flagstones.

The Labyrinth in Ellsworth, Michigan

St. Clair Lake- Six Mile Lake Natural Area

Continue two miles east of Ellsworth. Nature lovers will want to make a quick stop at the St. Clair Lake Six Mile Lake Natural Area. This nature preserve is known for its extended stretch of undeveloped shoreline. It’s a popular destination for canoeing and kayaking. Pull into the small parking lot on the right side of the road.

The short, quarter-mile hiking path alternates between wood chips and boardwalk. Walk through a forest and cedar wetlands to an overlook on the Sinclair River. You may be lucky to spot a great blue heron, belted kingfisher or even a bald eagle.

Walk the boardwalk at St. Clair-Six mile Lake Natural Area

Riverside Cafe

We so enthusiastically indulged in the goodies at Royal Farms that we weren’t ready to eat again as we cruised through Ellsworth. But we’ve heard wonderful things about the Riverside Café, located right on Main Street within the village. They feature an all day breakfast menu, and riends have gushed about the cafe’s corned beef hash and biscuits and gravy. Check out the menu and current hours on the Riverside Café Facebook page.

East Jordan

Next stop on the Breezeway Fall Color Tour: East Jordan. This quaint town is located at the mouth of the Jordan River where it flows into Lake Charlevoix. It’s a perfect area to view the changing colors of autumn.

Breezeway Fall Color Tour Goes through the quaint town of East Jordan, Michigan

The old East Jordan Iron Works foundry has long been a landmark for locals. The company was founded in 1883, shipping its metal grates and access covers throughout the world. The foundry has been replaced by a new plant and the company renamed as EJ Group Inc. Catch a glimpse of this old gem if you can: it’s slated to be torn down in the next couple of years.

East Jordan Sportsman’s Park

Sportsman’s Park is located on the banks of the Jordan River. It includes a lighted boardwalk and a viewing platform. There are also fishing piers, a gazebo and public restrooms. The park is surrounded by natural wetlands, making it a prime location to spot bald eagles and ospreys.

East Jordan & Southern Railroad Engine No. 6 Locomotive

The historic East Jordan and Southern Locomotive Old No. 6 train engine is now on display in Sportsman’s Park. This nearly 200,000 pound steam train dates back to the city’s logging days. The East Jordan & Southern Railroad operated from 1901–1961 and the engine is a historic landmark.

Jordan Art Walk

East Jordan is known for promoting Michigan artists. There are currently seven sculptures on display in Memorial and Sportsman’s Parks. This is a revolving exhibit, so the current artwork will be rotated out after three years.

Jordan Valley Glassworks

Keep on eye out for the Jordan Valley Glassworks studio as you make your way through the town. This bright yellow building was not on our official Breezeway Color Tour map, but it’s definitely a must-do stop!

Make a stop at the Jordan Valley Glassworks during The Breezeway Fall Color Tour

Jordan Valley Glassworks is a unique working studio that specializes in blown glass art. Their inventory of beautiful, custom made pieces include ornaments and vases, yard art, stained glass wall hangings and chandeliers.

color tour cruise

Glass blown memorials are very popular with customers. The studio takes a small portion of the cremated ashes of a loved one and showcases it in a beautiful glass design. You can honor your loved one with a custom made memorial paperweight, oil lamp, votive cup, pendant or ornament.

color tour cruise

We popped in at the right time and were able to watch a professional glassblower as he crafted a beautiful, brightly colored vase. He was kind enough to explain how the furnace worked, and answered all of our questions. Call ahead to make an appointment for a more in-depth demonstration, and even schedule your own glassblowing lesson!

Jordan Valley Glassworks Studio

Jordan Valley Glassworks can be found at 209 State Street. Click on the Jordan Valley Glassworks website and check out their beautiful creations.

Foundry Bar And Grill

Ready to find a spot to eat in East Jordan? Look no further than the Foundry Bar and Grill. Their slogan pretty much says it all: “Dammm. Good. Food.”

The restaurant has an industrial vibe which reflects the historic foundry in town, the East Jordan Ironworks. The interior of the restaurant has a rustic, industrial atmosphere, with historical photos and memorabilia paying homage to the town’s historic past.

The restaurant, overlooking the marina on Lake Charlevoix, features pizza, burgers, wings and salads. They also have craft cocktails and ice cold beer.

We still weren’t quite ready for a full meal, so their warm pretzel bites with bar cheese for dipping was the perfect appetizer for us. A patron seated near us insisted that the garlic cheese curds, battered with fresh parsley breadcrumbs and deep fried, are the best thing on the menu!

At the of our Breezeway Fall Color Tour, the Foundry was featuring fall-themed cocktails. We indulged in the Drunken Pumpkin, with pumpkin vodka, pumpkin cream and Kahlua. It was divine: more like a dessert than a cocktail!

East Jordan Foundry Bar And Grill: A great place to stop for lunch along The Breezeway Fall Color Tour

Order online at the Foundry Bar And Grill Website. The restaurant is located at 101 Main St. in East Jordan.

Boyne Mountain Resort

Boyne Mountain Resort: The ending point of The Breezeway Fall Color Tour

The official Breezeway Color Cruise tour ends at Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls. Those who pick up a goody bag at Royal Farms score a free ticket for a chairlift ride to the top of the ski hill for a breathtaking panoramic view. (tickets ordinarily cost $14.00)

Take time to wander around the mountain top. Photo ops abound! There are miles of hiking trails if you are so inclined. You can even opt to try out the mountain top disc golf course. Rent discs and get a scorecard at the Boyne Mountain Adventure Center.

Ride the chairlift at Boyne Mountain Resort for a views of fall color

You can get a bite to eat or chill out with a beer at the Eagles Nest Restaurant while you enjoy the incredible views of Boyne Valley. There’s a full bar available, plus a casual menu with hot soup, hamburgers, veggie plates and hot pretzels. There’s also a cozy wood burning fireplace where you can warm up if the day is cold.

The Breezeway Fall Color Tour ends with a ride up the chairlift at Boyne Mountain Resort

Head to the Boyne Mountain Resort website for more information or to check out the menu at the Eagle’s Nest. Lodging is available for those who wish to spend the night.

Technically, the Breezeway Color Tour culminates at Boyne Mountain. However, the charming town of Boyne City is only ten minutes away on M-75 and deserves to be added to your itinerary. This northern Michigan gem is located on the shores of Lake Charlevoix, another great spot for sweeping views of fall color. And Boyne City is home to one of our favorite restaurants: Cafe Santé.

Café Santé in Boyne City

After sampling a variety of goodies all along the Breezeway route, we didn’t have room left for a full-fledged dinner. So we headed into Cafe Santé for an appetizer. Cafe Santé is casual, European-style bistro. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a  wood-fired pizza and a Belgian brew. There’s inside seating and dining on the patio with both covered and open-air sections.

I ordered an Italian classic: baked shrimp scampi with garlic butter and bread crumbs. It was absolutely delicious! Equally impressive was Cafe Santé’s sparkling sangria, made with brandy, peach nectar, house-made sour mix, and fresh berries topped with with Cava, the delightful sparkling wine from Spain.

Sparkling Sangria made in-house at Café Santa in Boyne City, Michigan

We seriously questioned if we had room for dessert, but hated the idea of missing out on something special. So we opted to share the Pot De Créme, a delightful concoction of Belgian chocolate, espresso and whipped cream. Just how good was it? So good that we dove right in when it was delivered to our table, and I neglected to take a photo!

Click here to look over the Cafe Sante menu.

Alpine Chocolate Haus

Alpine Chocolate Haus in Boyne City, Michigan

Still have a craving for chocolate? (After our dessert at Cafe Santé, we took our chocolates to-go!) The Boyne City Alpine Chocolat Haus is conveniently located right next door to Cafe Sante. It’s one of the best known chocolate shops in northern Michigan. Alpine Haus has been making high quality chocolates, fudge, brittles and caramel corn since 1985. Each piece of chocolate is made by hand, one at a time! Alpine Haus Chocolat is famous for their pillowy, chocolate covered seafoam and their out-of-this-world chocolate covered potato chips. Their ice cream counters are particularly busy during the summer.

We walked in and marveled at the huge variety of confections available. Particularly impressive was the wide array of jars filled with chocolate covered fruits and nuts.

color tour cruise

For me, one of the very best reason to visit a gourmet chocolate shop is to sample their gourmet truffles. And the Alpine Haus rocked this one out of the park! Their truffles are perfectly coated with a simple layer of chocolate, and filled with decadent, silky smooth ganache. The double dark chocolate truffle truly melts in your mouth! The peppermint truffle is high on my list of favorites, closely followed by the sea salt caramel.

Chocolate truffles at Alpine Chocolat Haus in Boyne City, Michigan

Alpine Haus is known for their scrumptious caramel apples. According to their website, these gems are not made from your granny’s Granny Smith apples. They are lovingly made from incredibly huge, incredibly crisp, extra juicy Granny Smith apples grown in Michigan, and then smothered with ” our gooey-licious caramel.” There are over a dozen varieties to choose from.

Naturally, I went for the dark chocolate sea salt apple. David opted for the peanut covered caramel apple. I definitely agree with the “incredibly huge” description! These apples are incredibly huge and incredibly rich. There’s no way I could ever eat a whole one. You can easily cut them into 8 or 10 slices to pass around and share.

Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Apple from Alpine Chocolat Haus in Boyne City, Micigan

Just as the website claims, these just may be the finest caramel apples that we’ve ever experienced! Mmmm…

The Boyne City shop is located at 1 Water Street. If cruising down the Breezeway doesn’t quite fit into your schedule, you can easily have have some chocolatey goodness shipped right to your door. Place your order on the  Alpine Chocolate Haus Website.

When the brilliant reds, yellows and oranges of autumn are at their peak, hop into your car and cruise along the Breezeway Fall Color Tour. Don’t forget your camera!

This is awesome, I love the lake view with the trees. It looks so cool.

I had no idea there was such a thing as the Breezeway – and look at all the amazing shops, art and FOOD to sample! What a great fun fall activity.

There is another great scenic road in the area called The Tunnel of Trees. It’s hugely popular, and so crowded during the fall color season. It makes The Breezeway a true hidden gem.

What a wonderful post. I love your pictures, ideas, and fantastic descriptions of the northern Michigan cruise the breezeway fall trip. I hope to add this to my fall fun list.

Thank you! There are so many fun things to do in our area during the fall.

That chocolate shop looks amazing! I’ll be sure to visit Michigan in the fall when I finally get to go. This is my kind of trip!

This tour has so much to offer! All of the stops sound wonderful. I like that there are so many different types of options.

This really is a great color tour, but there are so many different things to do that it’s impossible to do it all in one day.

Wow! This is such an extensive, well put together post! Thanks for sharing your experience. I want to do something like this!

Thank you! We are always looking for a color tour that we haven’t done before once fall colors arrive.

Looks like a lot of fun! The resort looks really nice 🙂

Boyne Mountain is a great resort! They also have the largest indoor water park in Michigan: Avalanche Bay.

This post has me drooling between a cider slushie (never had one of those before!) and the caramel apples. Ellsworth looks beautiful, and my son would love to see that train!

So many drool-worthy treats can be found along the Breezeway Color Tour. I seriously cannot believe all that we ate along the way….dieters, beware!

Michigan is such a beautiful state! And that chairlift ride looks like a great way to see the fall colors!

The chairlift to the top of the ski hill is a great way to get a panoramic view of fall colors. We’re going to try and time it again this year when the colors are at their peak.

The Breezeway Color Cruise looks like a perfect way to spend a fall weekend. What a great area to explore!

There are certainly more places to explore along the Breezeway than can be done in a day. We’re waiting for a bit more color before we head out this year to hit the spots we missed last year!

As a born New Englander I love a good foliage display! The Michigan breezeway doesn’t disappoint!

New England is definitely another prime location for autumn foliage!

Viewing trains on the Breezeway is an activity that we would enjoy. We also enjoy seeing the changing of the fall colors.

Cruising the Breezeway definitely a family-friendly way to spend the day!

Cruising the Breezeway looks like an ideal way to enjoy fall colors! We’ve been so hot and dry in SW Missouri that I’m afraid we won’t have any pretty colors this year.

I hope the fall colors come through for you! We’re still pretty green around here right now. Climate change has definitely pushed the fall colors back a few weeks compared to ten years ago.

So far I’ve only been to the northern part of Michigan once. The Breezeway sounds like a nice weekend adventure for us!

Come back to Northern Michigan! We have so many great outdoor family-friendly activities!

The Breezeway looks terrific! We have not been to this part of Michigan and will have to put it on our list. Thank you for sharing.

I hope you’re able to take the Breezeway tour someday. There are so many great stops along the way.

Love this area. I’ve not heard of the Breezeway, even tough I’m pretty sure we drove part of it last summer. Michigan is so beautiful in fall.

The Breezeway tour definitely falls into the category of northern Michigan’s hidden gems. Especially right now when the leaves are turning color!

Quebec City

Founded in 1608 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain, Quebec City is one of the oldest European cities in North America. Its history is a critical part of its identity.

French Speaking

Quebec City is predominantly French-speaking, reflecting its roots as a stronghold of French culture and heritage in North America. This influence is evident in the city's architecture, cuisine, and daily life.

The city is named after Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city, which is a large volcanic-related hill or small mountain.

Ben & Jerry's

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, the founders of Ben & Jerry's, initially planned to start a bagel company but found the equipment too expensive. They later opened their first ice cream shop in 1978 after taking a $5 correspondence course in ice-cream making from Penn State and investing a total of $12,000.

ACTIVITY LEVEL RATING

Level 4: Active

Expectations: The tour includes well-paced walking tours with regular breaks. Up to 2-3 hours of walking each day. To fully take advantage of all this tour has to offer, guests need to be able to walk longer distances, climb several flights of stairs and navigate steps and uneven terrain walking for extended periods of time over more difficult terrain (e.g. cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, limited or no access to elevators). Your itinerary can include significant changes in temperature and altitude and may require a higher number of longer travel days with morning and/or evening activities. Most trips will feature long touring days, many full-day excursions and a full and active itinerary with a faster pace and longer distances. Excursions require standing and walking to city centers where coaches are prohibited.

Appropriate for: Travelers who are physically fit, expect a vigorous pace and enjoy participating in two to three hours of physical activity per day.

For your reference, we send to you a detailed itinerary approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the scheduled tour departure. This has day-by-day times and events, hotel information where you can be reached in case of an emergency, and airline information.

The times listed on the itinerary are all approximate. We cannot be held responsible for schedule changes due to unforeseen circumstances with the weather, transportation agents, highway conditions, hotels or contracting agents.

AIRLINE TICKETS

You will be issued your boarding pass the morning of our departure, after your arrival at the Albuquerque International Airport. If you have an American Airlines frequent flyer number, or a TSA number, please call our office at least 3 days prior to the tour to ensure we can note these in your reservation.

If you are joining the tour from locations other than Albuquerque, we make other arrangements for you to join the tour. Please call our office for more details.

AIRPORT SECURITY

Do not forget to bring your government issued picture ID to show at the airport. A passport is required for travel outside of the United States. If you do not have the proper ID, the airline will turn you away.

We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carryon baggage and contents due to enhanced security measures. If you have further concerns, please visit the TSA's Web-site at www.tsa.gov. There is room inside the motorcoach for your hand carried bag.

CHECKED BAGGAGE FEES

On our scheduled airline for this tour, passengers are assessed a fee per checked in bag, by the Airlines, upon checking in for the flight.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

It is always a good idea to carry on your person a list of medications that you are taking and an emergency contact phone number while you are traveling. And we suggest making a copy of the itinerary and provide it to a friend or family member.

GRATUITIES/ITEMS INCLUDED IN PRICE

All hotel baggage handling fees are included. We also include basic gratuities for the Tour Director, Coach Driver, and local Tour Guides. If someone has truly gone above and beyond additional tipping is permitted, but never required.

LODGING REQUESTS

If you would like to request special accommodations at the hotel(s) where we are lodging, please call us as soon as possible and we will forward these requests for you. The phone numbers of the hotel(s) where we are staying are listed on the itinerary.

TRAVEL REQUESTS

We pay close attention to your requests but please realize that these are merely requests and cannot be guaranteed.

RESPONSIBILITY

SUN TOURS acts solely as an agent in arranging hotels, transportation, sightseeing, baggage-handling, and other services and does not assume any liability for injury, damage, loss or delay due to any act or default of any company or person. We, along with our subcontractors, reserve the right to make changes to an itinerary if it is necessary for the proper handling of a tour.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING/MISC. SUGGESTIONS

In late September, the area fully embraces the fall season, with noticeable changes in both the weather and the environment. Here are some key characteristics of the climate during this period:

Temperatures: The average daytime temperatures typically range from the high 50s to mid-60s °F (around 15°C to 18°C). Nighttime temperatures can be cooler, often dropping into the 40s °F (around 4°C to 9°C). These temperatures can vary depending on the specific region, with cooler conditions in the higher elevations.

Precipitation: Rainfall is possible, though late September is not typically characterized by heavy precipitation. The weather can be variable, with a mix of sunny days and occasional rain showers.

Fall Foliage: Late September is often a prime time for fall foliage in Vermont, especially in the northern and higher elevation areas. The leaves on many trees begin to turn to vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, making it a popular time for leaf-peeping.

Humidity: The humidity is generally lower than in the summer months, contributing to the crisp and pleasant feel of the autumn air.

Daylight: Days start to become shorter, with earlier sunsets and longer evenings, as the autumn equinox marks the transition towards shorter daylight hours.

For visitors in late September, it's advisable to pack warm layers, including sweaters, a jacket, and possibly a hat and gloves for the cooler mornings and evenings. Comfortable walking shoes are also recommended, especially for those looking to enjoy outdoor activities and the beautiful fall scenery. While the weather is generally comfortable and conducive to outdoor activities, it's wise to be prepared for a variety of conditions, including the possibility of rain.
