Online Consumer Complaint Filing against MakeMyTrip

Online Legal India Logo

Planning for a trip beforehand is something a lot of travel mongers like to do. People like to book transportation and accommodation for at least a few days before the vacation. This digital age has enabled us to do so.

Unfortunately, it has also opened doors for new scammers and frauds who lure customers by offering discounts on their travel budget. Even if you’re not scammed, you can easily encounter a deficiency of service on the part of travel agencies. MakeMyTrip is no exception here.

Thus, it is highly recommended to be aware of the legal process to file a consumer complaint against MakeMyTrip from the DPIIT, Govt. of India certified Consumer Protection Portal.

Frequent Service Deficiency from MakeMyTrip:

  • No refund after Cab/Ticket cancellation
  • Hotel denying Check-ins
  • Fake promises under Booked Packages

Course of action

  • Sending an email or Calling MakeMyTrip is an option for you. You can let them know of your grievance and compensation by contacting them.
  • Contacting the hotel or transportation company directly could be the last step you can take to sort out your issue on your own.

Many cases usually remain unresolved even after following the course of action. The agency either refuses to cooperate or they shut out your refund demand.

In that case, you’re required to lodge a consumer complaint against MakeMyTrip  in court. Filing a case in court is not an easy task as this requires a lot of detailed paperwork to draft the official complaint.

India has a rich heritage, divine destinations full of greenery and peace, and resembles no less than the daughter of Mother Earth. Not only Indians but foreigners are also mesmerised by the charm and elegance of her beauty. Due to COVID last year, people were trapped inside their homes and completely quarantined. Everyone missed the fun and enjoyment of travelling.

This year, we are witnessing the reopening of all the places in India. Major tourist attractions are getting ready for visitors after almost a two-year lockdown. People will hurry to book their tickets online. Credit goes to digitisation! Paytm, MakeMy Trip, Amazon, and other large online portals will remain busy in the upcoming months. Ah! The festive season serving as a cherry on the cake.

There is always a problem tailed to good news. Traffic jam! Customers will witness heavy traffic while booking their tickets, cancellation of flights, no refunds from the retailers, and many more chaotic confusions will occur in a few months or so. And guess which retailer will face most of the problems?

A bench of the commission chaired by president Poonam Chaudhry said Make My Trip's service was "deficient" and caused a "miserable situation" for the complainant and his family.

MakeMyTrip Fined Rs 35,000 For Deficient Services By Consumer Court

MakeMyTrip has been fined Rs 35,000 by the consumer disputes redressal forum. (Representational)

The New Delhi district consumer disputes redressal commission has directed online travel company Make My Trip to pay over Rs 35,000 to a man, who had made a booking in a resort but found it locked, for deficiency in services.

The commission was hearing a complaint which said Make My Trip booked accomodation in a resort near the Jim Corbett national park in Nainital in September 2016 and the complainant found the premises sealed by an order of the National Green Tribunal.

The resort was sealed prior to the complainant's booking and the company was "under a duty" to not book a sealed resort, the complaint said.

"Hence we direct Opposite Party No. 1 (Make My Trip) to pay to the complainant Rs 10,965 spent and paid extra (for booking another resort) along with 9% interest...and further pay Rs 25,000 towards compensation, which will also include the cost of litigation," the bench, also comprising members Bariq Ahmad and Shekhar Chandra said.

The bench noted that Make My Trip did not provide any "cogent evidence" to show that it had paid the cost of accommodation to the resort owner.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

"The OP (Make My Trip) with such a good reputation and maintaining good relations with various service providers as a facilitator...will definitely not have any problem in cancellation of the bookings...and it cannot deny the alternative booking and refund of the additional amount paid," the bench said.

Travel Complaints and Travel Refunds

Never make a scene at the customer desk.

Mark Kahler

It isn't our favorite aspect of budget travel, but there are times when we must make a travel complaint.

The majority of interactions between traveler and agent go the way of what you see pictured here -- professional courtesy and efficiency.

But when things go poorly, travel complaints often have a sense of urgency attached: you need to get on the next plane out of town or you need that hotel room you were promised. Under stress, many of us raise our voices and quickly lose patience when we sense someone is less concerned about our problem than we would prefer.

No one is suggesting you become a "pushover" and allow the system to trample you. But make your points with a calm politeness rather than a shrill, demanding tone. Ask for a manager. Be clear about what you think would resolve the situation on the spot. If you need a free room or a refund, ask for it. Don't wait for it to be offered.

Remember that whatever an employee tells you does not need to be the last word. But if they can say truthfully that you were loud, rude or even threatening, you might face even more trouble. At the very least, human nature kicks in and the person on the other side of the counter decides there is no reason to help you.

Save Every Document, No Matter How Small

The picture above shows counterfeit rail tickets. If you want to prove you were ripped off, you'll need to show that ticket. But look how small they are -- easily lost in your luggage or among larger travel documents.

It is important to save all the paperwork from the transaction(s) in question. If someone at a complaint desk takes that documentation from you, get their name and job title, and ask if they can make a copy of whatever you're surrendering to them.

Another tip: save receipts from meals or lodging you had to purchase because of your travel problem. You'll need these things to document your losses. They not only show how much extra money spent, but also verify your time line. With all of your paperwork, you are ready to contact the company.

Don't Plead Your Case to the Wrong Department

When you're dealing with multinational companies or government consumer bureaus, it's easy to get lost. There is a natural tendency to unburden yourself of the sad story, but don't waste time and energy telling it to someone who can't help you.

Ask for the specific person(s) responsible for addressing customer complaints. Search for the contract of carriage in your ticket or make a few calls before you spill your troubles.

Resource: Airline phone and web site directory.

Take Detailed Notes

At first glance, this seems like painfully obvious advice. But logic fails us when we're in a difficult situation and perhaps holding back anger or battling fatigue.

You'll need details when you make a formal complaint. Save every correspondence with the company, and take notes while on the phone. Ask the name of each person with whom you speak, and keep a log of your contacts by date and time, including what they promised you or how they treated you. Use the same firm but friendly resolve that you attempted at the ticket counter. Continue as long as there appears to be a possibility of resolution.

As with a travel journal, it pays to write down the details right away, as many are quickly forgotten within a few hours.

Travel Complaints against Airlines

An airline ticket is really a contract between you and the company that they will transport you to a certain place at a certain time. The more formal name is "contracts of carriage." You won't be surprised that much of this information is in very fine print, but pull out some magnification and read it. It is important to know what the airline has promised (or failed to promise) before you go forward with a formal complaint.

If you don't have a ticket handy, go online to the airline's web site. For example, Delta Airlines contract of carriage information is plainly displayed. It's a simple matter of performing a search for it.

Exhaust Internal Appeals Before Going to an Outside Agency

When an airline experiences system-wide problems, you can bet there are hundreds of consumers in your predicament. There is bound to be an internal appeals process in place that will deal with your concerns, or at least attempt to do so.

But there are times when you are butting your head against a stone wall. No one you've contacted will help resolve your problem, despite repeated attempts.

Complaint bureaus and consumer services operate mainly for victims who have done the work and run into that wall. Now is the time to take your documentation and seek the help of a third party. But don't expect an outside agency to help you until you've done everything reasonable to help yourself.

Consumer Protection from the U.S. Government

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) maintains an Aviation Consumer Protection and Enforcement Division . Within it, you can file complaints about safety and security, airline service, as well as disability and discrimination concerns. Outside the U.S., many other countries maintain similar operations that will vary in name but operate under the umbrella of consumer protection.

Discrimination and safety issues will get a lot more attention here than poor service, but the government keeps tabs on complaints, and it never hurts to let the offending company know that, if necessary, you're prepared to notify the appropriate consumer agency.

Note that there are procedures for airline ticket refunds and baggage issues .

Small Claims Court

The USDOT offers an outline of steps that might be required if you need to go to small claims court.

These courts are operated by state and local governments. As the name implies, this is recommended only for relatively small claims. In these situations, you are your own attorney. Unless you're trained in the law, don't go into this kind of court if the outcome is crucial.

Learn from the Bad Experiences of Other Travelers

Unfortunately, some airlines and travel companies have recurring problems with consumers. Consult their track records before you consider doing business again.

This holds true for all transactions, but especially larger expenditures necessary for bigger trips. Consult the Better Business Bureau or respected studies of consumer satisfaction: J.D. Power and Associates issues annual ratings for hotels and airlines; The American Customer Satisfaction Index compiled at the University of Michigan provides quarterly report cards.

Don't be Discouraged

When wrapped in red tape, it's easy to feel isolated.

Don't allow yourself to be worn down or discouraged. Remember that your perseverance might help someone else avoid a similar problem.

Of greatest importance, however, is the need to pay as little as possible in time and money for your travel. If you think someone has wasted your resources, call them on it.

We followed the same route, and when the trip ends, driver showed that we travelled 25kms extra. when we questioned hum, he said that maps never show the correct route, not covers the highways etc(which is pathetic explanation) and charged us RS375 extra.

I was trying to book a holiday package to Andaman through Makemytrip customer care for which the agent gave me a quote of 1.26 lakhs which had my preferred hotels with all the required sightseeings, cab transfers and ferries along with a Photoshoot at havelock. I requested the photoshoot activity to be removed and also to offer some discounts post which she called me saying she would be able to offer the package at 1.07 lakhs if I make the payment immediately as some offer is going on in MMT. Agreed that my mistake was I only checked the activities where photoshoot was removed and rest all was fine including transfers and I made the payment and dint realise that she simply removed the ferries in the name of discount. Post realisation, I kept calling the agent and she stopped picking up the call I feel cheated and harassed. I raised it with customer care even through Twitter but even there the customer care is unresponsive. It has been 4 days that I have raised it in Twitter but they keep asking to wait for resolution even without knowing the problem. Can someone assist me. I want the ferries to be added to my package and without spending a single penny as it’s their fault.

I tried to book a ticket today with MakeMyTrip after I sae the advertised price on Skyscanner. I clicked through and the price increased slightly. I said, okay I can pay that. Then, I fill in all my information and the price increased again!! Then, I try to check out and they add a "convenience fee"... What the !!! Do you think that customers are stupid?! I'm going to boycott you to all of my fellow travellers!

Fraud and Chor Company Makemytrip

I wish there was a minus ratings possible for this fraud company. Guys, never use Makemytrip. It is a chor fraud business. It does not believe in honouring it's commitments to its customers. I had booked a room under the MMT Value Stay wherein they offered full money back if the rooms aren't clean. Inspire of sharing the photos of the third class rooms, Makemytrip refuses to honour it's commitment of refunding the full booking amount.

Singapore trip refund

Had booked my Singapore tickets using Make my trip. vistara airlines PNR number- VZPRDV. But due to a medical emergency had to cancel the trip. We called the airlines and cancelled the tickets directly after submitting the medical report from the hospital. Vistara canceled the tickets promptly and asked us to get in touch with make my trip to get the refund. I have been chasing make my trip since that day and all they keep on telling me is Vistara has not refunded them which I do not believe is the case. Inspite of going through a medical emergency in the family, make my trip is really increasing my trouble. Stay away from such companies who spend millions on advertisements but fail to deliver. Their customer service Representative Sayan is the worst to deal with.

- We were referred from the SkyScanner…

- We were referred from the SkyScanner portal, however we cancelled our booking from the UK to Morocco through their website because: 1) They ask too many questions on their booking forms, which no airline would ask. 2) Sudan is not on their nationality list (why are you asking then?) 3) The unsubscribe option in your email newsletters does not work.

Thieves, Scammers, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

Thieves! Do not book with the company, they are scammers. I booked my flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo, as short domestic flight… never received any confirmation email, just a text message. The text had a link in it to go to the app and manage booking. When trying to log into the app, it sends one time passcode… the one time passcode is invalid. Unable to log in. Called customer support, line does not connect. Emailed the address provided in the text message. No reply. As a result I have had to rebook less than 24 hours before my trip and pay quadruple the price! I doubt I will get my money back from these absolute crooks. Book with someone else!!

Make my trip steals money

I would like to specifically mention 3 horrible customer service agents, make my trip is truly dissapointing and esentially steal money from people by giving you reward points youre stuck with and charging your card for those points. In particular supervisor Mr Tanmay has easily been the most rude person to speak to and acknowledges their mistake and does nothing for it. Along with taking over 24 hours just to follow up.

Very poor customer survice

Very poor customer survice, i will not recommamd to anyone makemy trip, No trasprancy, Mr Kuldeep ( Tour Manager) and Ms. Vidya ( Who has booked our packge) both are was not supportive and good for nathing specially that Mr. Kuldeep he is totally useless and non corporative. Five star service from makemytrip

We planned our 5 days trip for my elderly parents to banglore/coorg & mysore. Our travel agent priyanka loyal was helpful from the beginning to smooth our experience as this was our first time booking. Priyank kept me guided throughout payment process & informed about driver detail near the time

Never use them

If I could give these liars 0 on the ratings I would. Organized a 3 way conversation on Friday between Emirates, MakeMyTrip and myself where Emirates confirmed they could make a ticketing change. 4 calls later and absolutely zero action from Makemytrip. Also to be informed that a further 24 hours minimum would be needed to make necessary changes. I’ve spent Hundreds chf calling and being placed on hold only to be hung up on. Problem never resolved ending with me loosing all money

Reliable long distance taxi booking app.

I booked 2 long distance taxi rides (300km+) at short notice with MMT through the MMT app after Booking.com screwed up. On both occasions, the cabs were clean with functioning seat belts in front & rear. The drivers were courteous and not wreckless. They arrived well before the allotted pick up time and contacted me directly to confirm pick up details ensuring that we were not left hanging. They stoped for refreshments and toilet stops without having to be asked. The fares were reasonable and I could pay with a UK credit card via the app. The app is user friendly and pricing is transparent. MMT is now my go to app for long distance taxi bookings in India.

DO NOT book anything with this company

DO NOT book anything with this company. I booked return flights and wants to make a change to dates and received absolutely ZERO communication from their customer service. The phone numbers do not work, and there is absolutely no email to communicate with them. Horrific experience and will never ever book anything with them again.

Date of experience : April 16, 2024

It would be zero rating1

It would be zero rating, if I had a choice. After booking a ticket for my family, I requested for a date change owing to my daughter’s exam, paid the extra charges for date change + fare difference + MMT charges. A few minutes later, a mail comes: “prices have changed; please pay more”. Paid. Next day, another email comes: “prices have changed again; please pay more”. I contest. Then MMT goes silent. No updated ticket received; no responses to my emails except auto acknowledgments; no concern towards the anxiety. Total silence. The requested new date of travel (preponed from the original) arrives. Then the call comes: “your tickets were not changed”.

Very poor and misguided service while booking hotel on make my trip....Bad experience to me as while hotel booking on Mmt, Artificial intelligence directly booked my third class hotel with zero refund if cancelled. Boycott MMT....spread the awareness among customers and travellers.

Mixed experience

I pre booked a taxi in Kerala. The customer service WhatsApp chat was very unhelpful when I had a problem. They told me to use the website to modify my booking but when I was unable to do it through this, I responded again on WhatsApp and they ignored me (despite being online). When I arrived at the station to get my taxi, somebody called me but spoke no English at all. I couldn’t even be sure it was my driver. It took 45 minutes for me to find the driver because we were unable to communicate. The only saving grace was that when I was finally able to speak to customer service on the phone, they spoke good English and managed to help me find the driver by translating on the phone. I have given 3 stars for this reason, and because eventually I did reach my destination. However, I would probably not use this service again or recommend it as it was a stressful experience.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Final Rule Requiring Automatic Refunds of Airline Tickets and Ancillary Service Fees

Rule makes it easy to get money back for cancelled or significantly changed flights, significantly delayed checked bags, and additional services not provided

WASHINGTON – The Biden-Harris Administration today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a final rule that requires airlines to promptly provide passengers with automatic cash refunds when owed. The new rule makes it easy for passengers to obtain refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change their flights, significantly delay their checked bags, or fail to provide the extra services they purchased.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”

The final rule creates certainty for consumers by defining the specific circumstances in which airlines must provide refunds. Prior to this rule, airlines were permitted to set their own standards for what kind of flight changes warranted a refund. As a result, refund policies differed from airline to airline, which made it difficult for passengers to know or assert their refund rights. DOT also received complaints of some airlines revising and applying less consumer-friendly refund policies during spikes in flight cancellations and changes.

Under the rule, passengers are entitled to a refund for:

  • Canceled or significantly changed flights: Passengers will be entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered. For the first time, the rule defines “significant change.” Significant changes to a flight include departure or arrival times that are more than 3 hours domestically and 6 hours internationally; departures or arrivals from a different airport; increases in the number of connections; instances where passengers are downgraded to a lower class of service; or connections at different airports or flights on different planes that are less accessible or accommodating to a person with a disability.
  • Significantly delayed baggage return: Passengers who file a mishandled baggage report will be entitled to a refund of their checked bag fee if it is not delivered within 12 hours of their domestic flight arriving at the gate, or 15-30 hours of their international flight arriving at the gate, depending on the length of the flight.
  • Extra services not provided: Passengers will be entitled to a refund for the fee they paid for an extra service — such as Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment — if an airline fails to provide this service.

DOT’s final rule also makes it simple and straightforward for passengers to receive the money they are owed. Without this rule, consumers have to navigate a patchwork of cumbersome processes to request and receive a refund — searching through airline websites to figure out how make the request, filling out extra “digital paperwork,” or at times waiting for hours on the phone. In addition, passengers would receive a travel credit or voucher by default from some airlines instead of getting their money back, so they could not use their refund to rebook on another airline when their flight was changed or cancelled without navigating a cumbersome request process.

The final rule improves the passenger experience by requiring refunds to be:

  • Automatic: Airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops.
  • Prompt: Airlines and ticket agents must issue refunds within seven business days of refunds becoming due for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.
  • Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.
  • Full amount: Airlines and ticket agents must provide full refunds of the ticket purchase price, minus the value of any portion of transportation already used. The refunds must include all government-imposed taxes and fees and airline-imposed fees, regardless of whether the taxes or fees are refundable to airlines.

The final rule also requires airlines to provide prompt notifications to consumers affected by a cancelled or significantly changed flight of their right to a refund of the ticket and extra service fees, as well as any related policies.

In addition, in instances where consumers are restricted by a government or advised by a medical professional not to travel to, from, or within the United States due to a serious communicable disease, the final rule requires that airlines must provide travel credits or vouchers. Consumers may be required to provide documentary evidence to support their request. Travel vouchers or credits provided by airlines must be transferrable and valid for at least five years from the date of issuance.

The Department received a significant number of complaints against airlines and ticket agents for refusing to provide a refund or for delaying processing of refunds during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, refund complaints peaked at 87 percent of all air travel service complaints received by DOT. Refund problems continue to make up a substantial share of the complaints that DOT receives.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration

Under the Biden-Harris Administration and Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

  • Thanks to pressure from Secretary Buttigieg and DOT’s flightrights.gov dashboard, all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their customer service plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .
  • Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including over $600 million to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.
  • Under Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.
  • DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.
  • In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% — the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.
  • DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect against surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

  • Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, and the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.
  • Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.
  • Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity . The comment period on this proposed rule closes on May 13, 2024.

The final rule on refunds can be found at https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/latest-news and at regulations.gov , docket number DOT-OST-2022-0089. There are different implementation periods in this final rule ranging from six months for airlines to provide automatic refunds when owed to 12 months for airlines to provide transferable travel vouchers or credits when consumers are unable to travel for reasons related to a serious communicable disease.

New airline rules will make it easier to get refunds for canceled flights. Here's what to know.

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 25, 2024 / 12:56 PM EDT / CBS News

New consumer protection rules will soon entitle airline passengers to automatic refunds when flights are canceled or significantly delayed, while also requiring airlines to reveal  junk fees  upfront.

In total, the new rules could save travelers $500 million annually, Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Wednesday, describing the regulations as "the biggest expansion of passenger rights in the department's history."

They take aim at some of the most common complaints against airlines, such as delays and difficulties getting refunds. Airlines will also have to disclose all possible fees, such as added costs for seat selection, when advertising a fare.

The regulations are likely to effect in October, officials said. Here's what to know about the new rules and what they mean for you.

You'll get an automatic refund for delayed or canceled flights

The first rule mandates that airlines promptly refund customers when flights are meaningfully disrupted or delayed. Airlines will have to refund customers the full ticket prices, including airline-imposed fees, as well as government taxes and fees.

In theory, passengers are already entitled to such refunds, but in practice airlines don't always provide them, Buttigieg noted. He said the new rule benefits infrequent fliers in particular, who may be less familiar with their rights.

This rule will save customers the hassle of dealing with a chatbot or completing a cumbersome claims process to receive refunds they're entitled to anyway when flights don't take off as scheduled.

Airlines often offer customers compensation in the form of vouchers or miles with values that are less than the flight's original cost. And passengers often must engage with customer service agents or chatbots to secure refunds, which can lead them to give up on the process altogether, according to Buttigieg.

How long of a delay will qualify for a refund?

The new rule defines what constitutes a "significantly changed" flight: a delay of at least three hours for a domestic flight, and at least six hours for an international flight. That was previously left to the discretion of the airline.

The rule says passengers will get automatic refunds in those cases as long as they don't accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered by the airline.

Passengers will also be entitled to refunds for other significant flight changes, according to the Department of Transportation.

These changes include flights whose departure or arrival airports change, that add connections or downgrade passengers to a different level of service. If a flight requires a passenger with a disability to make a connection at an airport or on a flight that is less accommodating, that also qualifies for a refund.

How long will it take to get a refund?

Airlines will have seven days to automatically refund passengers who purchased their tickets with a credit card, and 20 calendar days for other payment methods, the Transportation Department said.

"No more defaulting to vouchers or credits when consumers may not even realize they're entitled to cash," Buttigieg said.

Can I get a refund for delayed bags?

Yes, checked bag delays are also covered.

When bags aren't delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight's arrival at its gate, passengers will get a refund for their checked bag fee.   On international flights, bags that don't arrive within 15 to 30 hours, depending on a flight's length, are covered by the rule.

What other refunds will be available?

Airlines must also refund the costs of services customers paid for but then didn't receive on the flight, such as wifi, seat selection or in-flight entertainment, the Transportation Department said.

For instance, if passengers buy wifi access but it doesn't work properly, they are entitled to a refund for the service.

What is happening with surprise fees?

Transportation officials also announced a second rule on Wednesday that targets "junk" or surprise fees, which are charges that aren't typically disclosed to a consumer ahead of purchase.

Under the rule, airlines must disclose all fees the first time that airfare is advertised on an airline's site. Hyperlinks don't count, according to the agency.

The rule is designed to protect consumers against confusion caused by "drip pricing"  by requiring airlines to disclose how much these additional fees will cost up front. That includes amounts airlines charge consumers to check bags, carry on bags, select seats, and change or cancel flights.

The rule is designed to help make it easier for passengers to estimate the full cost of flying so they can make an informed purchase.

Are seats guaranteed if I buy a ticket?

Under the second rule, airlines will also have to make clear to customers that if they buy a ticket, they're guaranteed a seat — even if they don't fork over additional money to choose where on the plane that seat is located.

How will I know I'm seeing the actual flight price?

The second rule also bars airlines from advertising artificially low prices that don't factor in mandatory fees.

The Transportation Department said this will end "discount bait-and-switch tactics" that dangle deceptive discounts to convince travelers to buy tickets.

What do airlines say about the new rules?

Airlines for America, a trade group for large U.S. carriers, noted that refund complaints to the Transportation Department have fallen sharply since mid-2020.

A spokesperson for the group said airlines "offer a range of options — including fully refundable fares — to increase accessibility to air travel and to help customers make ticket selections that best fit their needs."

The group said the 11 largest U.S. airlines issued $43 billion in customer refunds from 2020 through 2023.

While Buttigieg said airlines aren't "enthusiastic" about being held to a higher standard, he believes the new rules will build passenger confidence in companies and ultimately benefit the industry as a whole.

Buttigieg also said he hopes the new rules will push carriers to improve the consumer experience. For example, if an airline knows it will automatically owe customers refunds for canceled flights, it might invest more in precise scheduling, and ultimately reduce the number of cancellations overall.

The longest, strangest trip: Some psychedelic drug users are stuck with unwelcome highs

A rare condition called hallucinogen persisting perception disorder has puzzled researchers and raised alarms as psychedelics go mainstream..

A.J. took two small hits off a cannabis vape pen, a common ritual with his morning coffee. Moments after exhaling, a transfigured, kaleidoscopic version of the world emerged before his eyes.

“Some colors are seeping into the other colors,” the 30-year-old said, gesturing across his art-filled living room in Yorba Linda. “In that Persian tapestry on the wall, the flowers are flowing like the wind, back and forth, and the centerpieces of the horses and other animals, they’re stagnant still but I can feel them kind of moving, almost like a gallop.”

A.J. — who requested anonymity to discuss his drug use and medical history — was on no other mind-altering substances beyond the caffeine in his mug. The fantastical visions, which he’s come to expect and in some ways even enjoy, were a lingering effect of past drug use. They’re a manifestation of a rare condition called hallucinogen persisting perception disorder, or HPPD, which has puzzled psychiatrists and researchers and raised alarms as psychedelic drugs have become more mainstream for both therapeutic and recreational use.

A man partially obscures his face with a hand.

LSD and other hallucinogens have long been said to cause flashbacks for some heavy users, but HPPD is a unique phenomenon. It’s a lasting condition defined by a range of symptoms straight out of the “Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.”

Psychiatrists, researchers and more than a dozen people with HPPD said in interviews that the mysterious and beguiling condition may be more common than currently known.

Some who suffer from HPPD develop the disorder after years of using hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD and psilocybin mushrooms. For others, just a single psychedelic experience can bring on its lasting effects. In a smaller number of cases, it has been triggered by MDMA and even cannabis alone.

Some with the condition live for years with frequent or near-constant visual aberrations. Others experience mild symptoms that pass after a few months. Many develop serious psychological and mental conditions, including anxiety, depression and dissociation from reality.

A man wears rings on some of his fingers.

At its most severe, HPPD can destroy people’s lives or impair their basic faculties. Some lose jobs or fail out of school. A.J.’s visual perception was so affected that he had to relearn how to write and drive.

Many professionals who treat people with HPPD say they don’t want to discourage safe and informed use of psychedelics. But they warn that the condition can be life-changing, and that people should know the risk before dabbling in hallucinogens. Like any drug, doctors say, these powerful substances have side effects; for some, those effects don’t subside, and they are left to live for months or years with HPPD.

“Informed consent would mean full awareness of the risks, and I don’t think that’s happening right now,” said Sara Ouimette, a licensed psychotherapist in Oakland who has treated more than 20 people with the condition. “We’re only going to see more cases, unfortunately, as people are doing psychedelics like the Wild West.”

‘The brain-mind interface’

A former Harvard Medical School psychiatry professor and one of the world’s leading authorities on HPPD, Dr. Steven Locke, described the condition as “really at the brain-mind interface.”

Like the brain itself, much about the disorder remains a mystery.

The first description in a mainstream medical journal of the phenomenon was published more than 65 years ago, Locke said, and since then there have been sporadic news reports and psychological studies. It was first included as a diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, more than 30 years ago — yet many psychiatrists and other clinicians still have no idea the disorder exists.

After Dr. Henry Abraham, considered the grandfather of HPPD research, retired in 2017, Locke took on many of his patients. Since then, Locke has developed a general working theory of what causes HPPD and how it works.

“Long after the drug has left the body, there’s nevertheless a persistence of abnormal activity in the brain,” he said. Exposure to psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin is believed to be able to alter parts of the brain, he said.

On Sunday, one of Locke’s colleagues will present the findings of a recently completed survey titled “Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD): When the Trip Doesn’t End” at the annual conference of the American Psychiatric Assn. in New York.

Locke and other researchers from Harvard, Columbia and Johns Hopkins universities and the New York State Psychiatric Institute conducted an online survey of more than 650 people who self-identified as having experienced HPPD symptoms. The results present one of the most complete pictures to date of the scope of the perplexing condition and efforts to treat it.

Nearly half of the respondents reported taking multiple “precipitating drugs,” about one-fifth said they took only LSD, roughly 13% took only psilocybin mushrooms, and 5.5% listed only cannabis. The average age of the survey’s respondents was 28, and more than 8 in 10 identified themselves as white — about the same proportion as were male.

Bar chart showing breakdown of study participants

There appears to be a correlation with previous mental health diagnoses. More than half of the survey’s respondents reported that they had previously struggled with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions.

What’s baffling is that some people can develop permanent-trip symptoms after using drugs only a few times, while others emerge from years of frequently dosing on LSD and mushrooms with no lingering issues.

Studies have found that 2% to 4% of people who experiment with psychedelics will develop HPPD, and many of them will have short-lived or mild cases. Some clinicians put the proportion far lower, though others caution that there probably is a significant undiagnosed population.

Some experts believe a bad drug trip can inflict severe trauma that leaves people with a condition akin to PTSD. Dr. Wesley Ryan, who has treated about a dozen people with HPPD at his psychiatric practice in Marina del Rey, said such patients often experience depersonalization and derealization. They feel like they are witnessing their own life from the outside or that nothing is real.

“Maybe the wires get crossed in a way that they shouldn’t have, and that’s why they get these persistent visual hallucinations,” Ryan said.

Experts say a person’s mindset and the setting in which they take hallucinogens are key to avoiding negative experiences. Being with trusted people in a safe, comfortable location can go a long way toward avoiding a bad trip that could potentially trigger the onset of HPPD.

Many who develop symptoms experienced trauma as children, said Carol Gilson, a Texas-based psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker supervisor who has treated about two dozen patients with the disorder.

In psychedelic therapy, the drugs are used to help people unlock feelings and work through past trauma. But in non-therapeutic environments, Gilson said, there’s a risk the experience “might amplify a past traumatic experience or your greatest fear.”

The psychotherapist Ouimette agreed, adding, “If they’ve had that childhood trauma, as opposed to being healing, it can kind of get stuck.”

When trauma resurfaces during a psychedelic experience, Gilson said, the result for some is “the fight or flight system gets activated and it doesn’t get turned off.”

A man wearing a dark cap looks out a window.

The detrimental effects can last decades.

“I have quite a few patients who’ve had their symptoms for 10 years or more,” Locke said. “Those people have a fair amount of regret because they feel that they’ve broken their brains.”

‘Everything’s melting, everything’s morphing’

Adonai Vargas was 14 years old when he first developed HPPD. He was already an experienced hallucinogen user who had experimented with the powerful compound DMT and says he was taking LSD once a week “like a dumb teenager.”

Now he’s 21 years old and entirely sober, save for the benzodiazepines he takes for limited relief when he can’t handle his ceaseless symptoms.

He used to enjoy books but hasn’t been able to read anything longer than a few pages since the symptoms began. He often uses voice to text on his phone because his perception of words and letters is so scrambled.

“I’m still seeing visuals all the time, constantly,” he said last month during a phone interview from Miami. “It’s like you took three tabs of acid, straight up. Everything’s melting, everything’s morphing, geometric patterns everywhere, everything breaking and cutting and splitting…. It never stops from when I wake up to when I go to bed.”

Vargas’ case is extreme, but researchers and clinicians who treat patients with the condition say he’s not unique.

For Vargas, it all began with what he termed “a nightmare experience with a bad trip.” As a 14-year-old in his room in his childhood home in Albuquerque, he took two tabs of what he described as “really strong acid” that he bought off the dark web.

“Out of nowhere, I got sent to a hellish dimension I don’t how to explain in words,” he said. “Time didn’t exist, infinite torture, chainsaws ripping through my body, thousands of my worst fears I didn’t know I had were happening to me.”

Vargas called out for his mother, who found him in a delusional state and called the police. He blacked out and was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

Since then, he’s struggled to find anyone who knows anything about HPPD. Sometimes, he thought doctors’ efforts did more harm than good, such as when he was prescribed antipsychotics and antidepressants that seemed to exacerbate his symptoms.

The lack of awareness and understanding among medical professionals is a common complaint of those who suffer from HPPD. With research into the condition still in its infancy, the internet has filled a void for those seeking help.

Vargas said he found support and solidarity last month on the HPPD subreddit when his symptoms were at their worst. Dozens of commenters shared their own stories of overcoming the condition and offered resources and treatment recommendations, such as meditating or medicating with antidepressants or vitamins.

He found the responses heartening and is now seeking a way to either eliminate his symptoms or learn to live with them. He’s since begun meditating and plans to see a new psychiatrist soon.

It can be a long journey back to the unaltered world, and some never make it. But an HPPD diagnosis does not necessarily mean being doomed to suffer from the disorder’s most disorienting and debilitating effects.

‘Doctors need to know this is a thing’

Will Higgins sat looking out at the Santa Rosa Mountains beyond his backyard in La Quinta as heavy gusts blew cushions off furniture and covered everything in a layer of fine sand. He first developed HPPD in 2013, he said, three days after he took what he was told was LSD but now believes was a different, more dangerous synthetic hallucinogen.

A man seen through a window stands outside near a swimming pool.

“Who I was disappeared overnight. There’s a core of me that obviously was still there, but it just blew me away like that wind,” the 33-year-old said. “I had to rebuild myself. It took a long time.”

Higgins was days away from starting classes at a new college, where he had recently transferred to study ceramics, but the initial symptoms were overwhelming. Initially, he said, he suffered “near-constant panic attacks” and saw “wavy gasoline colors” from the moment he woke up. He felt like his IQ had plummeted and he was rendered almost incapable of reading and writing. Everything around him, he said, “was growing and shrinking … like ‘Alice in Wonderland.’”

For two years, he had no idea that his condition had a name. But over time, Higgins said, he discovered that living cleanly and spending time in nature reduced the negative effects. He also found relief from two medications, a mood stabilizer called Lamictal and an anticonvulsant called Keppra. Today, he no longer experiences much in the way of HPPD-induced visual effects.

A man and a woman pet a dog.

More than 90% of the people who responded to Locke’s online survey reported that they had taken medication or supplements or undergone other mental heath treatment for their HPPD symptoms. Benzodiazepines such as Xanax showed the highest success rate, with 58% of those who took them reporting that their symptoms improved. Antidepressants, meanwhile, had a positive impact on only 11% of respondents’ symptoms, while a third of those who took them said their symptoms worsened.

A few HPPD sufferers who spoke with The Times said they have tried taking more psychedelics in pursuit of a way back to their pre-trip existence. Gilson, the Texas psychotherapist, said the visual changes she experienced after experimenting with hallucinogens in high school “mostly resolved themselves” after she completed psychedelic therapy years later. They haven’t gone away entirely, but she considers the low-grade lingering effects “a gift.”

“I’m looking at a tree in my backyard right now, and the way the sun is shining, some leaves sparkle while others are in the shade,” she said, describing a “kaleidoscopic” effect. “I don’t see it as something that’s scary or anything wrong. It’s just a moment of the door of perception being opened.”

Nearly half of the respondents to Locke’s survey who tried yoga, meditation, neuro-feedback and other nonmedical treatments reported that they were helpful. For many, simply coming to terms with its negative effects can be an effective way to reduce them.

Samuel Smith, 21, said he already suffered from depression and anxiety before he developed HPPD after a single time ingesting a relatively moderate dose of about two grams of psilocybin mushrooms. Now, he takes an anti-seizure drug called Lamotrigine each day, which he said has “dumbed down the visuals a lot, and it got rid of the geometric patterns and colors and stuff when I closed my eyes.”

He initially experienced crushing anxiety over the condition, but ultimately found that limiting the attention he dedicated to its worst effects helped bring them under control.

“You’ve got to learn to ignore it and live with it,” the Henderson, Nev., resident said. “As someone who had it pretty bad, I was able to get over it, and once you get over it, that helps with reducing the visuals.”

Higgins now dedicates much of his time to research and helping people with the condition better understand the diagnosis and how to treat it.

“This disorder has stigma and shame attached to it. People often dismiss people with HPPD as druggies,” he said. “We deserve the same amount of caring and attention as people with any serious life-altering condition. … For that to happen, doctors need to know this is a thing.”

Navigate Your Career Path Like the Road Trip of a Lifetime

complaint on make my trip

Leave space for spontaneous detours and exploration.

Over the past few years, the way we work has changed. Recent data show that working in a single company, or staying confined to a single job title, for several years is becoming rarer. Not everyone’s career paths will be traditional and resemble a climb up a mountain. And that’s okay. We need a new way to approach our careers, one that allows us to be nimble and resilient. Why not  approach your paths like the road trip of a lifetime — to build an intentional career path that is unique, enjoyable, and adaptive to change.

  • Get in the driver’s seat. You don’t have to be confined to a predetermined path and you don’t have to stay on a single track — you can curate a portfolio of experiences. You can embark on a diverse and adventurous journey filled with discovery.
  • Know that the plan is iterative. When you set off on a road trip, you don’t plug your ultimate destination into the GPS and drive there as quickly and directly as possible. You ask yourself some key questions about what you want to experience along the journey: What kinds of places do I want to visit? What do I want to see and experience? When you embark on your career, know that it is okay to make detours.
  • Be open to unexpected opportunities and load up your trunk. On a  road trip, change is expected — that’s what makes it a rich adventure. Approach your career path with openness to unforeseen possibilities and seize them. You can even loop back to revisit somewhere you’ve been before with fresh eyes and new experience under your belt. As you explore, practice articulating the connections between where you’ve been and where you’re going. You should learn how to transfer your unique skills to each new role, as they can make you an asset in new spaces.

Gloria, a client of mine, thought her career path would be traditional and resemble a climb up a mountain. She aimed to follow the steps to success: First, she would choose a mountain by picking a field of work. Then, she would put in her time and build specialized skills. Next, she would shoot for the summit. She’d always been told that when you’re aiming to grow, there’s no room for stagnation or complacency, only linear advancement.
