Travel + Leisure Readers' 15 Favorite Tour Operators of 2023

The right tour operators can make or break a trip. These specialists came out on top in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023 thanks to insider knowledge and personalized service.

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

While we travel to see the sights, what we really take home with us are the experiences. And finding the right tour operator — one that’s able to meld insider knowledge about a destination with the best ways to take it in — can make or break a trip. But when the right combination does come along, it can be pure magic, so it’s no wonder that the last year has seen group travel on the rise .

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Staff/guides
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Accommodations

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

With nine of the companies returning from last year’s list , one major trend that stands out is the focus on a region, like with this year’s No. 1 pick, ATJ, which focuses on luxury travel, ranging from bespoke private to small group itineraries, in Austrasia. Also destination experts are Inside Japan Tours (No. 10), who offer themed trips, from honeymoons to diving, around the island nation, and Vagabond Tours of Ireland (No. 12), which makes its debut on the list, standing out for its B Corporation status, as it guides travelers around the Emerald Isle in their choice of style, either relaxed and culture-focused or active and adventurous.

Also notable are the operators who go a step beyond, like two returning favorites: Artisans of Leisure (returning as No. 3) has been called “top notch”; one reader said that “no other tour operator comes close in terms of knowing the destinations [and] understanding what we want and executing our trip flawlessly.” Black Tomato (dropping from last year’s No. 4 to a still respectable No. 6) manages to both fulfill curiosity and allay FOMO on its adventures globally.

But more than anything, it’s loyalty that shows what a strong tour operator is made of, and readers often raved about return visits with a particular company. One, for instance, shared that after 25 journeys, Du Vine Cycling + Adventure Co. (No. 2) stands out among them all. “The best cycling trips I’ve been on,” they said. “Great staff, accommodations, and first class all the way.” And that’s the winning combo for a tour company — leaving travelers with that passion for exploring the world through their eyes. See the complete list of top 15 tour operators, according to T+L readers, below.

Courtesy of ATJ

Formerly known as Asia Transpacific Journeys, ATJ made the list in 2011, 2017, and 2018, and it now leapfrogs back in triumphantly, notching the No. 1 spot. Offering tours in countries like Australia, Bhutan, Japan, Laos, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Vietnam, and Taiwan, the company specializes in custom itineraries and private group trips. But what travelers rave about is its band of extremely helpful customer service reps who are “responsive and personable.” They added, “I can call and speak with a live person immediately.” Customers tend to be loyal, but so are the agents: “I have used the same agent and she always remembers what we like and any special needs we have.”

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

8 Ways to Choose the Perfect Tour Company

Last Updated: November 3, 2023

tour group posing with Nomadic Matt during a hike in the hills

That idea of tours being bad is an old and outdated perception.

These days tour groups have become more adept at the changing landscape. They feature smaller groups, more authentic experiences, a better environmental impact, and more local guides.

I love group tours.

Even though I am an independent traveler, I find group tours super fun, a great way to meet people, learn more from an informed guide, go to places you normally can’t, and wet your feet in travel. My first trip overseas was on an organized tour. I didn’t know the first thing about travel and that tour gave me the confidence to travel on my own. It was the taste test I needed to become hooked on travel. Tours give a lot of people time to adjust to the “travel lifestyle.”

Unlike in the past, today’s tours are eco-friendly, cater to all travel styles, over cheap, and make a point to use local transportation and guides. And many destinations (like Halong Bay, the Galápagos Islands, the Serengeti, Machu Picchu, Antarctica, Everest) are virtually inaccessible without an organized group tour!

In this article, I am going to tell you how to find the best tour company so you get one that is inexpensive, eco-friendly, provides local guides, and gives back to the local community:

1. Research the costs

With tour companies, it’s not always true that you get what you pay for. Many tour companies nickel-and-dime you, while some are really good at maximizing value for your every penny. Ask how your money is spent to find out if you are really getting the best value for your money. How much of your fee is their overhead? Are you paying for top-notch hotels but staying in two-star guesthouses? You want a company that is transparent with why prices are the way they are.

Moreover, make sure you ask if there are added fees to pay when arrive. Many companies require you to pay additional money when the tour starts or don’t include park or attraction entrance fees. That cheap tour won’t be so cheap if you have to pay for everything while you’re there!

2. Make sure you are the audience

Is the tour geared toward older couples? Young people? Families? You don’t want to end up on a loud Contiki tour full of drunk twenty-year-olds when all you want is a quiet holiday.

There’s a tour company for everyone — just make sure you don’t end up on one that isn’t yours. Most tour companies list their guest demographics on their “About” page, and you can usually see from the photos of their tours who goes on it.

You can also tell the audience based on accommodation: if it’s hostels or guesthouses, it’s usually for backpackers and budget travelers; if it’s fancy digs, it’s for older travelers and families.

This is very important because these are the people you’ll be traveling with so you want to make sure it’s the kind of people you are traveling with. I’m still friends with the people from my first tour in 2003 because they were people like me. The tour in Japan that was filled with older families? Not so much. We didn’t have much in common. Wonderful people but we didn’t connect.

So, I always look for tours that have my demographic in them.

3. Get local guides

Guides can make or break your trip. They are going to explain everything to you and keep the flow of the tour going. I don’t want them hiring some young kid, non-expert, or someone who doesn’t know the place well. I’ve been on tours where the guide was a walking encyclopedia, and on somewhere the guide was a glorified timekeeper.

Make sure the company uses knowledgeable, local guides. The guide should be a local or at least a long-term resident, know the local language, have travel experience, and know life-saving techniques.

If you are unsure about the guides, call the customer service line and ask them about their guides.

4. Safety record

Make sure the company follows all the proper safety requirements and is accredited by the local government, the government where they are registered, and any other appropriate trade organizations.

5. A balanced schedule

You’re paying for them to fill most of your day. How do they do that? Are they doing that? Do they have a lot of activities organized, or do they leave you to your own devices?

That said, you don’t want a schedule that is crammed with things to do. Make sure you get a schedule of all the activities and pick a tour that is balanced. Running around will leave you wishing you had a holiday from your holiday, but you don’t want to be sitting around all day, either.

I love taking small group tours because they generally have a good balance. Any tour that requires you to be on a huge bus and hits 6 cities in 5 days is not a tour to take!

6. Environmental impact

There’s a growing trend among travelers called ecotourism . It’s about more responsible travel, not only toward the environment but also toward the locals in an area. This means using local guides, hotels, and services, and making sure to reduce waste and your footprint on the local habitat.

Moreover, these companies tend to offer better and more interactive tours that also give you a good degree of autonomy.

I think it’s important to pick a company that provides great value and gives back to the place you are visiting. After all, did you go there to ruin it for others? Doubtful.

Check with groups like the International Ecotourism Society for a list of companies that have been certified “eco-friendly.” With so much money pouring into the industry now, you have a lot of companies fraudulently saying they practice ecotourism but end up being involved in terrible labor practices, animal abuse, and waste.

7. Group size

Tour companies that have smaller groups tend to be much more mindful of the environment and the impact they are leaving. It’s a lot easier to meet people in a group of 10-15 than it is in a group of 60. I don’t like to go on tours with more than 15 people on them. However, I have friends who love Contiki tours with 40-50 people. Know what you are getting yourself into, so you don’t find yourself with a group too small or too large for your tastes.

Just remember larger groups tend to stay at bigger, more impersonal accommodations (they can only accommodate the numbers), eat at more touristy restaurants, and tend to travel to more destinations quicker.

In my expert opinion, small group tours are the best.

8. Check their reputation

How have other travelers enjoyed their time? Look for online reviews to see what a company’s reputation is. It might not always be what they claim, and it’s important to find out the truth before you book.

Remember that MOST people only write a review if something goes wrong. Someone might give a tour company one star just because their eggs were runny. Find the average. Someone might hate a tour because the weather was hot. Seriously. These are actual negative reviews from the tour operator company, Thomas Cook:

“On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.”

“We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”

“We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.”

“No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”

“Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”

“When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”

“We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”

So how can you trust the reviews you read online?

Take them with a grain of salt. You can read reviews on websites TrustPilot . The approval rating should look like a bell curve but with more A’s and B’s than C’s. I look for companies that average 85% or higher (or 4 out of 5 stars). If a company is that highly rated, the negative reviews are probably just outliers.

My Recommended (Best) Tour Companies

Here are some of my favorite small, day-tour, or backpacker bus tour companies:

  • Take Walks – This is my favorite walking tour company. They run a wide variety of insightful and entertaining tours around Europe and the US. What makes them so good is they get you inside access to attractions and places you can’t get elsewhere. Their guides rock too!
  • Get Your Guide – A massive marketplace for tours, activities, and excursions. If you’re looking for something niche, you’ll find it here!
  • Devour Food Tours – My go-to tour company for tasty food tours around Europe and the US.
  • Kiwi Experience – A hop-on, hop-off bus tour company in New Zealand for backpackers!
  • Baz Bus – A hop on, hop off again bus tour company in South Africa for all travelers.
  • New Europe – Free walking tours throughout Europe.
  • Free Tours By Foot – Pay-what-you-like tours throughout Europe and the United States. They are one of my favorite free walking tour companies in the world!

THE #1 COMPANY FOR MULTI-DAY SMALL GROUP TOURS

When it comes to multi-day, multi-week tours (think trips through Morocco, sailing in the Galápagos, etc.), I highly recommend using Intrepid Travel .

Intrepid is my favorite and best small group tour operator out there! I really love their guides, their small groups, off-the-beaten-track itineraries, and their commitment to the local environment and community. I always have an incredible time on their tours. They are my favorite multi-day tour operator and the only one I use now (the picture at the top of this page is me on their Patagonia trip). Intrepid is environmentally friendly, uses local guides and transportation, doesn’t rush their tours, and are quite inexpensive. I don’t even consider anyone else when it comes to multi-day trips.

I love tours. They are a great way to meet people, get a local to add value and knowledge, and see places you can’t get to alone! I don’t take them often but I do take them. And, since I follow the above rules, I always have a good time. Some of my favorite travel memories were when I was on a group trip. If you follow my tips above, you’ll never go wrong either.

Discover the best tour companies in Iceland. Read this article to know what to look for in choosing the tour operator that will handle your trip to Iceland. Learn about their most exciting tours , from sightseeing to adventure experiences.

Iceland is one of the most popular destinations in the world. Thanks to its diverse landscapes, natural attractions, and rich culture, nearly a million travelers visit Iceland yearly.

When exploring Iceland, most visitors book organized tours from tour operators and travel agencies rather than make DIY trips. These organized tours can help save time and provide itinerary options even before you arrive in the land of fire and ice.

For example, suppose you want to visit the Golden Circle of Iceland or go  boating at the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon . The best tour operators in Iceland can give you an easy and convenient experience. Their impeccable services and extensive experience can transform a visit to these locations into an unforgettable Icelandic holiday.

Watch the dramatic eruption of the Strokkur geyser when you visit the Golden Circle.

Choosing a tour operator that will handle your travel activities can make or unmake your Icelandic holiday. That’s why it’s essential to research the tour company and its products before finalizing your booking.

What makes a tour provider the perfect match for your travel needs? You can search the web for blogs and articles about this question, but you’ll probably get unlimited or overwhelming answers.  To save you from the trouble of extensive research online, we have listed five recurring factors to consider when choosing a tour provider in Iceland or anywhere else.

Does your tour operator have positive reviews online? You can start selecting the best tour operator by knowing if they have a good reputation in handling tour packages. Most tour companies have an online presence you can check through search engines and social media.

Search engines like Google display review ratings of tour companies from unique users who had prior transactions with them. Apart from the five-star rating you can base on, you can also view the comments by users for specific details of their tour experiences.

How many years has the tour company been operating? In most cases, those with long years of operation in the travel industry have more expertise in running excursions.

If you have saved up months of your salary for this travel, you may not want to gamble your Icelandic dream holiday on a company with less than a year of operation.

How much are the operator’s tour products compared to their competitors? Pricing or budgeting is a vital part of every traveler’s vacation planning. Before booking a product, consider comparing the price with other companies offering a similar experience.

Pricing for tours in Iceland varies widely depending on the duration, type of activity, and the number of participants. Sightseeing tours are typically cheaper than activity tours like skiing and glacier hiking, in the same way that group tours are more affordable than private tours.

In addition, the best tour operators in Iceland have detailed tour descriptions where you can read the inclusions of each tour product. For example, a tour product should include a guide and entrance fees to attractions. Meanwhile, your tour package must include accommodations for multi-day tours in Iceland .

Tour Vehicles

What vehicles are used for tours in Iceland?

Tour providers in Iceland use different types of vehicles for their packages, depending on the kind of activity and number of participants.

Private tours typically use private cars, super jeeps, and minibusses for their packages. This setup is ideal for those who want a more personalized experience with a better pace and privacy.

On the other hand, tours with a bigger number of joiners use large buses to transport travelers to specific destinations. The buses can accommodate at least 30 passengers and up. This setup is standard for sightseeing tours in the  Golden Circle and the South Coast .

Do the tour guides speak English? Do they know other languages?

A tour guide is one of the most significant parts of any tour experience. They can either make your adventure more fun or forgettable.

A reliable tour operator in Iceland has local tour guides that are friendly and knowledgeable. They know the elements of your tour at the back of their hands even when not holding a brochure. They will tell you trivia, stories, and folklore about the attractions you’re exploring.

In most cases, the guides can speak English to accommodate foreign travelers. Sometimes, other guides can even speak different languages like French, German, Spanish, Chinese, and more. You can verify this when checking out a tour product and website or by asking the tour operator directly.

To help you plan your trip to Iceland, below is a list of 25 tour companies we consider the best in Iceland based on the five factors mentioned above. These operators are ranked and arranged based on their 5-star ratings, reviews, and quality of tours from the lowest to the highest.

Branka was an amazing tour guide! She made sure we had as much time off the bus as possible. She was incredibly personable and was always engaging when sharing stories and talking about the history of Scotland. I would definitely recommend joining any of her MacBackpackers tours!
It was an amazing experience going to the Highlands for the first time with MacBackpackers. It was a life time dream to visit Scotland, I had huge expectations when I booked this trip and it was exceeded! Why, you ask? Bunch of reasons, some of then being: Great itinerary, had the most places I wanted to go; Flexibility on the itinerary; Increadible guide, Neil is doing this for almost a million years and he's sooo sooo knowledgeble, an amazing storyteller, responsible driver and great person altogether (also he knows some secret and less know spots that are totally worthy and I didn't saw other company's going there); The places we got to visit are breathtaking (the photos you'll take will be beautiful, of course, but also won't do perfect justice, trust me when you see those places live, you'll understand); Bus is great, confy seats, always clean; In relation to other company's this one has a smaller group and it makes a good difference; Lots of time off the bus; Amazing hikes; Last but not least that are high chances that the group of people that you get to meet in this tour will be amazing, I'm very glad to meet everyone I did for sure; Hope that they bring back the 7 days tour, cuz I'll definately be doing that. The most time in the Highlands the better. If you have any doubts about going to Scotland at all or going on this tour, this is your sign to booked it now. Core memory type of experience.

My first Insight Tour and it was amazing. Scenic tour of the beautiful countryside, towns, and historic sites of England, Scotland, Wales, and Republic of Ireland. Our Travel Director, Greg, was very professional, knowledgeable of the history, culture, food, music, and local 'celebrities'. Greg and our driver (Arthur - the best) worked together as a team, making our trip enjoyable, memorable, and fun. Always courteous, respectful, and conscientious of our time, safety, and well-being. Good job!
What a wonderful way to experience my first tour. This 13 day highlight of the best that Britain an Ireland have to offer was full of amazing opportunities to taste the culture and meet locals that lovel and adore their country and the history that holds. Greg our tour guide was exceptionally in his organisation, knowledge and commitment to ensuring that we enjoyed our trip. His attention to details and the extras to make the group feel welcomed and special. My personal experience on my special day was made even more heart warming by Greg's kindness and effort in make sure that I felt loved and acknowledge with an celebration at the evening meal. Arthur our driver was amazing and his experience in driving showed in the professionalism he demonstrated in through the entire 13 days. Overall i would throughly recommend this trip to anyone especially if they are blessed with Greg and Arthur.

Quality or quantity is your choice. The tour list plenty of cities you get to visit and sounds like a great value; it’s wasn’t. London and the two cities Cambridge, and York were very good. I enjoyed them Windsor even after paying extra. Scotland was a different story. Edinburgh was nice we had a guided tour on the bus and an hour and a half of free time. Edinburgh has a history museum: where they kept the first cloned sheep; never even seen the building from the outside. The hotel was a twenty minute ride back into town. We checked in at 20:00 or 8 pm. Needing to be up and ready to leave by eight in the morning negates taking a bus for twenty minutes. Hotel location should have been closer to city center not the edge of town. Then we spent a day going through the Scottish Highlands to the Loch where Nessie is supposed to reside. The boat ride and time at the castle ruins while picturesque ate up three hours. We arrived in Glasgow at 8pm or 20:00 right from the freeway to the hotel. Glasgow was a complete and total disappointment. The hotel was set up for the thirty and under crowd all industrial and noisy. I didn’t care for it and the others in my group agreed it was the worst we stayed at. Now it was clean and modern just not a relaxing place. Rooms were tiny and there wasn’t a chair in it; just an ottoman looking thing to sit on. Only part of Glasgow we were able to see was when the bus took some riders to the train station. Then we were off to Ireland. Belfast was our first stop. Dropped off at the capital building and given two hours. No drive by the Titanic museum no history of Belfast except for a light touching of the troubles and a brief mention of the peace wall. I didn’t bother taking the Dublin tour and did my laundry that morning. I spoke with people who did the tour and wasn’t impressed by their experience. I did a full trip around the island exactly one year before and had pictures on my phone. When asked did they show you this or that the answer was generally no. Cork they set us down across the street from a department store and gave us an hour before we had to get on the bus to go to the hotel. No tour of Cork no history. Hotel again was far enough you couldn’t just walk in the time we had. The roast of the trip was the same story over and over again. The hotels while nice and clean were never where you could get out and about to enjoy and explore by yourself. I was looking forward to Galway as it was one of my favorite spots visited last year; the mall built with a castle wall inside it. Didn’t have time to go there if I also wanted to eat dinner. I did see two sights in Ireland I didn’t see last time. Filming location for The Quit Man and a monastery relics in the middle of Ireland. So this was quantity over quality and I wasn’t impressed.
The first part of the tour (Paris and London) the tour guide seemed inexperienced and gave inconsistent meeting times which confused many in the group. The driver was rude but did drive well.

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid needs to tighten up this tour. Two free afternoons is too much when one has only three days on the island. Either make the tour two full days or two full days with one full day free to make plans to go to Hoy or Rousay. Give people guidance on what to do on the free day.
I recently traveled with a friend to Scotland. We included a week long tour with Intrepid, booked through Tour Radar. We paid a very healthy sum for the tour, $3,460 each. The description said the trip was appropriate for ages 15-99. It also described two nights in Portree on Isle of Skye with a private van tour on the full day on Isle of Sky. My friend and I chose this tour because of the time spent in Portree and on Isle of Skye, the small group size, and that if it was okay for ages 15-99 then I’d be fine six months post a major knee surgery. What wasn’t included in the description and what happened: -No where did it say that we’d be expected to walk/transport our luggage on foot from Points of transportation to our lodging ranging from 10-20 minutes. My 94 year old father-in-law lives with us and is able bodied, but there’s no way he could have done these distances While also carrying/pulling luggage. My 87 year old mother could not accomplish this either. I could do it with my recovering knee, but I was slower and it also used up some of the energy I needed for enjoying walking portions of the tour. I didn’t anticipate having to schlep my suitcase for 15 minutes at a time over uneven sidewalks, etc. I would have packed differently had I known or we would have looked for a different tour. -My friend and I still wonder why Fort Williams was included on the itinerary as a place to stay?
The only thing Intrepid provided was a walk to a castle that wasn’t open for visitors. The rest was on our own and there really wasn’t much happening other than a nice, little museum. We would have preferred more time on Isle of Skye. -We were notified prior to departure that our time on Isle of Skye would be at Kyleakin - not in Portree- and we’d have to arrange our own tour. Phone numbers were provided but no one on the tour had any luck booking anything prior to arriving, calls not returned, no availability, etc. So, 3-4 of our tour group spent 2 FULL hours or more on their phones while we were in Fort Williams trying to come up with some options for us. They pieced together a public bus ride to/from Kyleakin to Portree and a private taxi tour at our own expense! (After paying for it in the cost of our tour.) This should have been done by Intrepid!! Not once were we offered reimbursement. We didn’t have any time in Portree. We’d hoped to have lunch before our taxi tour, but all the restaurants were full. I found a to-go cup of tea and scone at a bike shop, then time in cue to use a bathroom. I’d looked forward to staying in Portree and had many places I had planned to walk to when not on the private van tour we were sold but didn’t get. Also, While staying in Kyleakin, the guest house did not provide a cooked breakfast, just light snacks in our rooms. Breakfast was provided, but we had to walk to/from the restaurant that was a mile each way. This used up time we could have been site seeing. Also, it would use up my knee energy for the days site-seeing. My friend went to breakfast but I skipped the walk to reserve my energy for site-seeing. Oh, and the whiskey tasting…we passed distilleries but we Were given a private lesson on tasting with our tour guide. While he did a fine job, the setting was not the same as a distillery setting. The room was bare, we used wine glasses, we were Supposed to take notes but no hard surfaces to write on, etc. Just wasn’t what any of us were expecting. I found Intrepid’s disregard for the changes and the misleading descriptions as to be very unprofessional. I use tours so that I don’t have to do all of the arranging. Why pay you if I’m going to have to do it myself? Next time I book a tour, I’ll be sure to avoid Intrepid. Many friends have asked about my trip. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the tour. I’ve shared that multiple times now. I’m not the only member of the group that walked away Disappointed. We didn’t want to “blame” the tour guide, I don’t think he was responsible, he was just trying to keep us happy as he could sense how displeased we were. His answers too our questions were not satisfying at all. He seemed to be trying to cover for the company best he could.

Tour guide and bus driver were both excellent. Starting hotel was terrible and no where near the main area of Edinburgh. Breakfast there was a granola bar, croissant in a plastic wrap, a yogurt, and a juice box. Our hotel room in Inverness had a leaky ceiling which we reported to the front desk right away. They said they sent maintenance to fix the issue, but that evening it was leaking again. G Adventures itinerary is not reflective of the actual tour and for many extra activities listed there was no time to do them even if we had wanted to. Isle of Skye was a real highlight along with Inverness. We only received our tour vouchers the night before we left Canada and we had to call to get it. We will not consider G Adventures for any of our future travel needs.
This was my second G Adventures tour and it proved to be as enjoyable as the first one, which was the main reason my wife and I booked it. The small size of the tour group and the variety of people made it all the better. The tour offered a good balance between structured visits of major attractions and free time to explore on our own. I would not hesitate to recommend a G Adventures tour to anyone seeking a guided travel experience in the company of other like-minded travelers.

The tour guide, Linda, was great as was the coach driver, Mike. The coach was very comfortable and the sites we visited were great. The tour was well organized and well executed. The meals were very good as well. The only thing making this “good” and not “excellent” is that I had to sleep on a pullout couch for three nights of the tour which much surprised me for something billed as a first class tour. So if you plan to go three to a room, be prepared for someone to be on a couch.
this guided tour was very good. we covered many places and did many activities. the guide was very good, always available, attentive and with a good knowledge. I recommend this tour

Fab 10 day tour. Tour guide was organized, knowledgeable, and fun. Driver was very pleasant and a safe and cautious driver. Scenery amazing. Definitely took some back roads. Small group was so much fun!
Wonderful tour with the best, most professional, friendly, kind, and fun tour guide any traveler could hope for. Flavio Lotrettzo was outstanding in his ability to quickly have members bond as a cohesive group, feel comfortable with other, and develop a sense of unity. Thanks to Flavio, this was the best tour I have ever taken. I would highly recommend Blue Roads as an excellent tour company.

Our tour guide, Ryan, was outstanding! He immediately put us at ease with his friendly and personable manner. His knowledge of the complicated roads and history of the areas we visited gave us the safety we needed to deeply enjoy the beautiful landscapes and fascinating history Scotland has. Thank you for the perfect vacation!
The Spirit of Outlander tour was great! This tour is geared for Outlander fans but you don't have to be a fan to enjoy all the locations visited. Our tour guide, Paul, was fantastic! His knowledge, enthusiasm, and professionalism was 5-star! It was very exciting to visit the filming sites of Outlander and to be walking in the footsteps of the actors! There were a variety of locations to visit daily from castles to churches and gardens. There were also unscheduled photo stops to capture the scenic beauty on the way to visiting various locations. My husband and I waited over 2 years to take this trip (due to Covid) and it was worth the wait! The hotels were top notch and the meals provided were good! A thoroughly exciting trip!

How To Start A Tour Company

Selling Tours As A Travel Blogger – Podcast Episode Transcript

One of the top ways to monetize your travel blog is to create and sell tours.

This is actually one of the top ways I earn an income through my blog Jessie on a Journey.

I’ll share my story of how I got into doing this as I provide a step-by-step strategy for how you can do it, too. In fact, you’ll be able to use these tips to create your own tour operator business plan PDF .

But, first, I want to direct your attention to the show wheres where I’ve shared a link to my free Tour Company Creation Cheat Sheet .

This printable is meant to help you take what you learn in this video to create and sell profitable tours faster and easier.

Feel free to even pause this episode to go grab the free cheat sheet.

Then let’s kick things off with…

Step #1: Pinpoint the general theme of your tours

When it comes to how to start a tour guide business , the first thing you’ll want to do is consider the mission and branding of your blog and let your tours be an extension of that.

For instance, if your blog aims to help people discover local cuisine, you might create a food tour that supports local businesses and shares the story of the destination through food with guests.

Or, if your blog is focused on active adventure, you might put together hiking or cycling tours.

Step #2: Flesh out the tour itinerary

I recommend starting with one tour. This way, you can really put your all into the itinerary of your first tour and spend time creating the perfect experience.

Really think about what you want the experience to be. Is it a bunch of stops tied together by a theme? Is there a larger story you’ll be weaving into the itinerary?

What I mean by this is, are you creating more of a “Local eateries in the West Village” or “Telling the story of Italian immigrant history through food in the West Village.”

As you map out the stops and script, make sure that the route makes logistical sense.

There may be two stops that are both perfect for your tour, but if to get to them then guests will need to sit on a bus for 30 minutes or take three different trains, it’ll likely be frustrating for most people.

Finally, consider how you can add in some VIP experiences.

This doesn’t need to be anything flashy or over-the-top but should be something that they couldn’t do on their own.

One example would be going behind the counter of a coffee shop to learn how they make a special drink or getting to go into the kitchen to meet the chef of a local restaurant to learn more about the food.

Step #3: Gauge interest in your tour

When it comes to how to start a tour business , one important thing to realize is that you might have the best tour idea in the world, but that doesn’t mean your audience will book it.

For me, I was lucky that I regularly had readers emailing me and asking me if I could show them around New York. This made it much easier to launch a successful tour operation.

That is actually how I got the idea to get licensed as an NYC tour guide , work for other tour operators to gain experience, learn from other seasoned tour guides, and then start creating and selling my own tours.

If you don’t necessarily have people asking you to be their guide, another idea is to survey your audience.

You could share your idea with your community and ask if they’d be interested, and potentially even get their input on what they’d find valuable.

Moreover, if you find there is interest, you might consider holding a launch event where you promote a tour at a specific date and time

Just keep in mind here that:

a) having people tell you they’re interested doesn’t guarantee they’ll pay money, but

b) even if your audience doesn’t fill up all of the slots and sell out your tours you can always promote and reach your target market elsewhere, too.

Step #4: Set up your tour pricing

As you continue creating the tour experience, one important consideration is what you’ll charge.

A good starting point is to look at what other tour operators are charging for similar tours — though keep in mind you don’t need to charge the same.

It’s really about value.

For instance, you might have more VIP moments on your tour, which adds value.

Or, maybe you’re a historian leading a historic tour or you have a fine arts degree and you’re leading an art gallery crawl. These are things that can allow your price to go up.

Step #5: Set up your sales page and software

Of course, you need a way for people to book your tour.

I personally have a sales page on my blog, as well as a dedicated tour website at nycphotojourneys.com (under the business name NYC Photo Journeys).

Both connect with my booking system software, PeekPro.

PeekPro handles the calendar, online bookings, secure payments, and even liability waivers.

There is a fee to get set up with them, but if you send me an email to jessie (at) jessieonajourney (dot) com I can get you a discount of $100 off since I’m a PeekPro user myself — which I believe will cover the cost of the setup.

Step #6: Launch your tour company

Now it’s up to you whether you want to have a soft launch and just sort of promote the tours without any big event tied to the opening or a larger event, which can be a great way to build excitement.

There are many ways to do this, but one idea is to host a discounted launch tour on a set date and time and put effort into promoting this one event.

You might even consider inviting bloggers, journalists, and influencers to the event to get some early press.

Step #7: Take steps to increase tour profits

Along with promoting the heck out of your tour and regularly getting the word out about it, I recommend offering add-ons and upsells.

Add-ons are extra products and services that pair with your tour to enhance the experience or make things easier for the guest.

For instance, if your experience ends with yoga in the park you might have the yoga mat rental be an upsell.

Another popular one is cancellation insurance.

Personally, since I offer NYC photo tours , one of my add-ons is a bonus folder of black and white photographs.

In terms of upsells, once you create other tours and experiences you can either bundle them together or pitch other products at checkout for additional sales.

PeekPro makes this super easy to set up in just a few clicks, too.

Step #8: Pinpoint legal considerations when it comes to selling tours

This is one of the most important aspects of how to start a walking tour business !

I do recommend that you consult with a lawyer before leading tours to make sure you’re set up for success.

Here in NYC, there are actually free legal services for small business owners through the Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project, so it may be worth checking in your area if there is anything similar.

At a minimum, you’ll definitely want to have liability insurance as well as a liability waiver that guests sign.

Step #9: Scale your tour business

One of the best ways to increase your bookings is to list your tours on tour aggregators like Viator, Expedia, and Get Your Guide.

Sure, you’ll need to give them a cut of your profits — typically 20%-30% — but it’ll bring in customers you wouldn’t have had in the first place.

Make sure you’re also growing visibility by building reviews.

After every tour, I personally reach out to guests and ask for a review, letting them know I’m donating $3 per review to a local charity as a little incentive. This is also a nice way to give back through tourism.

Now I hope you enjoyed this episode on how to start a tour and travel business .

I hope you feel inspired and empowered to create and sell profitable tours through your blog. Yes, it’s hard work, but it can absolutely pay off. Plus, being a tourist guide can be a lot of fun!

The best time to visit Russia is during the months of May to September. Although Russia is the largest country and weather can vary vastly, the popular cities and locations in Russia will be experiencing a warm weather and long, sunny days during this time.

You can expect to spend around $60 – $80 for a solo traveler staying at a decently rated hotel. This price will cover food, transportation and other fees. For a more luxurious vacation, you will be spending anywhere from $150 – $250.

Russia has a lot of specialties attached to it. From ballet and theatre to vodka and Russian culture, there is a lot to expect. Famous landmarks include Lake Baikal, The Red Square, The Hermitage and Moscow Metro System.

Being the largest country on the planet, there is definitely a lot of area to cover in Russia. However, most of Russia is barren and uninhabitable. For popular tourist destinations, 2 weeks should be enough for a majestic experience of Russian culture, nature and food.

The most iconic Russian dishes include the Blini (Russian pancakes), Pelmeni, Beef Stroganoff, Syrniki, Kasha (porridge), Borscht and Okroshka. Russia is also famous for their world-renowned vodka.

We are staying in Braşov for 5 nights at end of September. I really want to see Bran and Peles castles as well as a visit to the bear sanctuary.

Can anyone recommend a good tour company that I can pre-book with before we arrive ?

' class=

Hi, see the listings and reviews on https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g295394-Activities-c63-Brasov_Brasov_County_Central_Romania_Transylvania.html

Also do a day trip to Sighisoara.

If these 5 nights are your entire stay in Romania it would be best to split them between Brasov (3 days) and Sibiu (2 days).

During your stay in Brasov (or any other large town in Romania) do NOT use regular taxis; you will likely be ripped off and end up in an ugly argument with the driver. Get around only with public transportation or ride hailing apps where you can see the price upfront (Uber or Bolt).

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. WHEN: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily WHERE: 34 Old Orchard St., Old Orchard Beach. beachbagels.yolasite.com ______________

Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to Sunday WHERE: Fort Andross, 14 Maine St., Brunswick. dutchmans.me ______________

FORAGE MARKET

Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. There are usually five flavors available, including sesame and garlic. Breakfast sandwiches (including vegan options) are available. Forage also has a location in Lewiston. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 123 Washington Ave., Portland. foragemarket.com _____________

MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 599 Forest Ave., Portland. misterbagelforestave.com ______________

At Rose Foods, the menu varies depending on the day, but there are usually six to eight flavors available. For example, should you pop in on a Friday, you’ll find a poppy and onion bialy (a cousin of the bagel that is not boiled). Rose Foods also makes a number of bagel sandwiches, including the Classic Nova with Nova lox and the Classic Whitefish. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily WHERE: 428 Forest Ave., Portland. rosefoods.me

______________

ROVER BAGEL

At Rover Bagel, you’ll find wood-fired plain, poppy, sea salt, sesame and everything bagels available most of the time, and the spread game here is strong with cream cheese options like lemon-thyme-honey cream and chili-garlic.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 10 West Point Lane Suite 10-204, Biddeford (Pepperell Mill). roverbagel.com

SCRATCH BAKING CO.

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 416 Preble St., South Portland. scratchbakingco.com ___________

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. WHERE: 117 Route 1, Scarborough. themainebagel.com Advertisement

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.

WHEN: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily WHERE: 15 Temple St., Portland. workscafe.com

KSAT is now broadcasting NEXTGEN TV signal for antenna users. How to rescan, troubleshoot

A dense fog advisory in effect for 12 regions in the area, neighbor wonders whether child witnessed killing of southwest side woman, tanya lynn boulding, 33, allegedly shot dead by husband.

Katrina Webber , Crime Fighters Reporter

Robert Samarron , Photojournalist

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a woman who was found dead Tuesday inside her Southwest Side home.

The office said Tanya Lynn Boulding, 33, died of a shotgun wound .

San Antonio police found Boulding inside her mobile home in the 8600 block of SW Loop 410 after conducting a welfare check on her there.

They believe her husband, 32-year-old Jaevel Andrew Boulding, murdered her in the hours ahead of his own deadly encounter with officers.

Chief William McManus discussed some of the details during a news conference later Tuesday night.

He said officers had been looking for her husband after finding Boulding’s body.

They were able to track him down through an OnStar system inside the car he was driving.

McManus said the man noticed officers as he exited a business in a shopping center, located in the 1800 block of Vance Jackson, then immediately started shooting at them.

Four officers fired back, killing him, McManus said. SAPD identified the four officers as

At the time of the news conference, the chief did not offer many details about Boulding’s murder.

Juan Cervantes, who lives next door to her, said he was puzzled to see police cars outside Boulding’s home that day.

“Normally, I come every Tuesday, and I see the lady and her sister outside. And this time was a lot different,” Cervantes said. “Probably the worst-case scenario is we don’t know what really happened. We don’t know what initiated it.”

Cervantes said he had limited interactions with the husband, but Boulding was always friendly and helpful.

“Sometimes, I have friends coming over, and they usually let us park over there if we need a parking spot,” Cervantes said.

Outside the home Thursday morning, there were no obvious signs of the violence.

However, there were several toys and a child’s bicycle scattered about the yard.

Cervantes said Boulding did have a young son who lived in the home with her.

KSAT 12 News sent an email Thursday morning asking police, who had never previously mentioned the existence of a child, whether Boulding’s son may have been in the home at the time of the murder and possibly witnessed it.

A public information officer for SAPD replied, saying that she was not able to confirm whether the child was in the home that day, but that he was with other family members now.

So far, police have not released a possible motive for Boulding’s killing.
