Sea Days: 15 Ways Cruise Experts Avoid Boredom

Holland America Wave Sale

Are Sea Days Boring? 15 Ways To Spend A Sea Day

Sea days on a cruise ship used to be a little boring for me. Don’t get me wrong, a boring sea day is still way better than a day at work, but I still would rather be out on an exciting excursion. After the pandemic shutdown, my views changed about sea days on a cruise. I started thinking more about ways to spend a sea day and thinking of things to do on sea days.

The truth is, there are tons of things to do on a sea day. In this episode, we are going to go through a list of 15 ways to spend a sea day. It’s not an exhaustive list by any means. In fact, we left off one of my favorite things – Carnival sea day brunch (so yummy!), but if you’ve been wondering “what’s a sea day like” then this article should give you a good idea.

Are you one of those people that gets totally bored on Sea days? Well, then – read on because we have 15 great ideas for how to spend a sea day.

Get prepped

The number one tip we have for you is to start planning the night before your sea day. Get out the newsletter, open up the ship’s app, and start looking at things you might want to do. If you’re looking at the old fashioned newsletter (the printed kind!) take a highlighter pen and highlight things that interest you. If you’re using the cruise line’s app , just save those ideas to whatever schedule it is that you have on your app. Notes or the calendar work fine on your mobile device too!

Sea days - Fun Times

Enjoy the good life

Our next tip – don’t rush out of bed on your Sea day!

Hey, even if you are the type of person who cannot sleep in….try it! Linger for just a few more moments in bed or better yet, go get a coffee and then crawl right back in bed and just enjoy that luxury cruise life affords you.

Coffee with a view

New cruisers are often amazed that you can get free room service coffee on a ship!

This is absolutely one of my favorite tips. One of those things that we just don’t get to do in everyday life, right? Like, WHEN in life can you enjoy the majestic ocean washing past your balcony, all while sipping complimentary caffeine! Try it…call room service, and place that order for coffee, tea, or maybe even some hot chocolate, then, take that little beautiful little carafe and enjoy it in bed, or on your gorgeous balcony, as the sound of the waves remind you that you are NOT at home, and you do NOT have to report to a 9am video conference!

Did we mention…It’s complimentary. Enjoy your room service coffee, maybe some breakfast out on your balcony !

Fine dining in the morning

Another thing we love to do is have a leisurely breakfast in the main dining room, instead of the buffet. You don’t have to rush up to the buffet if you don’t want to. In fact, many cruisers never visit the buffet all cruise long! Take a look at the main dining room open hours, and go to the dining room and be served. There’s no need to dress up, or make reservations. Just show up, and the staff will seat you. It’s a wonderful luxury of cruising and we highly recommend you take advantage of it. Forget about the hectic buffet. Go get pampered in the main dining room instead.

Explore the ship

Another thing that’s awesome to do on a sea day is to explore the ship . When I say explore the ship, I don’t mean try to figure out where everything is. Just put on some comfortable walking shoes and roam around aimlessly. These days ships can be huge. There’s so much to see that sometimes you miss a few things on those first days of the cruise. Wander around the ship without a plan, and explore areas of the ship you haven’t been to yet. You never know what you’ll find, and you’ll get a little exercise as a bonus.

Here are some examples of cool places you may discover. On certain Royal Caribbean ships, at the front of the ship, just off the promenade deck, you’ll find a helipad. The helipad is generally empty and offers great photo opportunities! On other ships, there are sometimes viewing areas on TOP of the bridge. Head as high as you can, and forward on the ship, and see if you can find an entrance to a deck atop the navigational bridge.

Photo safari

Another thing we love to do is to wander around the ship taking photos. We call this our photo safari. We like to take a camera (usually that’s our iPHone) out and go look for unique things, or fun areas on the ship to take photos of. We’ve been doing the “photo safari” pretty much as long as we have been cruising. We end up with a lot of silly photos, but it is so much fun and creates lots of different memories.

Bonus tip: head out during “magic light”, that glowy time just before and after sunset for the most flattering photos, and avoid high noon as the light will be harsh. If you’re an early riser, sunrise offers the same glowy benefits as sunset and the ship will be nearly empty.

Sea days - "Photo Safari"

Rest up for shore day fun

This may be a given for some of you on a Sea day, but it’s worth mentioning. Use your sea day time to take a nap. Not only should you take a nap, but you should plan to take a nap, take a long nap, take two naps. You follow me. Embrace the naps friends. You’re on vacay!

15 Ways To Spend A Sea Day - sleep

It’s okay to indulge a little

While we’re talking about decadence and really giving into it, my husband’s favorite tip for a sea day is to get ice cream or gelato. There’s not a single cruise ship out there where you couldn’t find some ice cream on a sea day . Indulge in the middle of the day. Why not?

Hot tip: Princess cruises offers the only authentic gelato at sea, and it’s fabulous!

15 Ways To Spend A Sea Day - Ice-cream

Get pampered

The next tip we have for you is to visit the spa. I know, I know… you’re not going to get the best deals in the spa on a sea day, but we still recommend that you consider it. You’ll have more time to enjoy everything the spa has to offer, and can show up early to chill and wind down. While I love port day spa deals, I also love to have a nice relaxing spa experience . Maybe you want to get a massage, a nice facial. Maybe even get your hair done for formal night. You can do all of those things. Trust me, it’s so nice to book yourself into the spa on a sea day!

Sea days - Spa time

Get physical (or not)

Looking to make the most of your cruise dollar? Whether you’re looking for something active or relaxing, sea days are the perfect time to take advantage of the shipboard activities. Catch a movie! Go shopping! Catch an enrichment seminar on how to use your camera. Hit the sports court. Play some basketball, go do the belly flop contest, play mini golf. There’s so many things to do!

Sea days - Physical activity

Ready for your close up?

Don’t forget to look at your photos in the photo gallery, whether your cruise line still prints ’em off or they’re just on one of those little computers in the photo gallery , go check out the photos that you’ve been taking all week with the staff.

Our next tip is a little controversial, cuz some people don’t like to do this, but we recommend hitting the hot tubs. You could do this on a relaxing afternoon before dinner or better yet, visit a hot tub in the morning before it gets crowded. This is my favorite thing to do on an Alaska cruise when they tend to be less crowded and it’s cold outside.

Sea days - Hot tub

Our next tip is to take your time getting ready for dinner. There’s just no reason to put unnecessary pressure on yourself. It may sound strange especially to people who don’t like to get dressed up, but enjoy the process of getting ready. Have a glass of Prosecco or champagne. Pack a small travel speaker so you can listen to music while you’re getting ready, or watch some TV. Take 45 minutes to put on your makeup. Relax, enjoy the process. Make a ritual out of getting ready for your formal night dinner . It’s something we love so much.

Sea days - Dinner Prep

Work up an appetite

Another one of our favorite things to do is to take a pre-dinner stroll on the promenade deck. If it’s a formal night , this is a great time take photos. The light is usually really good around dinner time, and you’re wearing your fancy garb, so capture that memory! We like to go out just before sunset. Like we mentioned earlier, it’s the time of day photographers call magic light.

You may have to experiment with the time a little bit to get the most beautiful light, but that sunrise and sunset timing every day is absolutely a photographer’s dream. If you want to go out and capture your best looking self with very little effort, all you need is your smartphone with a decent camera and a nice sunset or sunrise.

15 Ways To Spend A Sea Day - walk

Get ready for action

Our last tip for you today is a good one. If the day following your sea day is a port day, get ready for your shore excursion during your quiet sea day. Gather your sunscreen, water bottle, shore excursion tickets, towels and whatever other items you need, and pack up your bag. Get that stuff into your shore day bag so you don’t have to worry about it in the morning. This diminishes the shore day rush and ensures you won’t forget anything!

We hope you’ve enjoyed these 15 ideas, and that you’ll never be bored on a sea day again.

33 Fun Things to Do on Cruise Sea Days

33 Fun Things to Do on Cruise Sea Days

Are you nervous that you’ll be bored out of your skull on sea days on a cruise? Not to worry. Cruise lines have so many fun sea day activities that you’ll never find yourself stuck with nothing to do.

You’ll probably even find that there isn’t enough time to do all the activities you want to try!

cruise days tv

What is a sea day on a cruise ship

In case you’re unfamiliar with the cruise lingo , a sea day is when your ship doesn’t stop at a port of call. Most cruise itineraries feature at least a sea day or two, and they’re a nice break from port day shore excursions!

New cruisers often worry that sea days will leave them feeling trapped on a boat with nothing to do. However, today’s cruise ships are like massive floating resorts with endless activities.

The best part? You can choose to do as much or as little as you like. The choice is yours! Whether you want to pack your day with activities or just find a cozy place to unwind for a few hours, your cruise ship has it all.

Here are 33 super-fun ideas for sea days on your next cruise!

1. Sleep in

Many cruisers pack so many activities into port days, so sleeping in on a sea day can really feel like the ultimate in relaxation. Start your day off right by catching up on some much-needed rest!

cruise days tv

Turn off your alarm and put that do not disturb sign on your door. There’s nowhere you need to be in the morning—you’re on vacation!

2. Do some duty-free shopping

Cruise ship duty-free shops are usually open all day on sea days, as long as your ship is in international waters.

cruise days tv

Browse the jewelry and luxury goods shops—it’s all tax-free! Or pick up a bottle or two to stock the bar back home.

Cruise pro tip: Come prepared with a list of the duty-free items you’d consider buying, along with the price (including tax) you’d pay back home to get the best deals. You’ll often find the best prices on jewelry and watches, luxury beauty products, alcohol, and tobacco.

3. Relax by the pool deck

The pool deck is the place to be on a sea day. Whether you soak in the hot tubs, enjoy a swim, or just relax on a lounge chair, you’ll really feel like you’re on vacation here.

cruise days tv

The Lido Deck usually hosts entertainment on sea days—live bands and fun contests add to the party atmosphere.

4. Attend an art auction

Whether you’re looking to pick up a framed piece of art for your home or you’d just like to watch the excitement of bidding, a sea day art auction can be a great time.

cruise days tv

Plus, participants are usually treated to a free glass of sparkling wine along with a complimentary art print. Gotta love free stuff!

5. Enjoy a specialty lunch

The buffet and main dining room are open for lunch on sea days, but why not try something a bit more special?

cruise days tv

Often, at least one of the specialty restaurants will offer a fun sea day lunch at a reduced rate, or even for free!

6. Have afternoon tea

Several cruise lines offer afternoon tea service on sea day afternoons, ranging from basic tea and cookies on mainstream lines to white-gloved waiters and fine china on premium and luxury cruises.

cruise days tv

Indulge in an afternoon treat reminiscent of the days of the great ocean liners, when afternoon tea was a must-do each day.

7. Watch a movie under the stars

Princess Cruises started offering Movies Under the Stars back in 2004, showing popular films in the evening on the pool deck. Today, many modern cruise ships also play movies by the pool at night.

cruise days tv

Cozy up with a blanket and some popcorn to watch a film after dinner, or catch a concert performance or family-friendly film during the day.

8. Participate in a game show

Have you always wanted to be on a game show? Many cruise ships have their own versions! From Deal or No Deal on Carnival to Royal Caribbean’s Millionaire-style trivia game, a few lucky guests will compete for a chance to win prizes.

cruise days tv

Even if you’re not picked as a contestant, cruise ship game shows are always a fun time for audience members. You might even spot yourself on your stateroom TV later in the cruise!

9. Take a dance class

Even if you have two left feet, trying a group dance class on a cruise is the perfect activity for a sea day. Your ship will probably offer at least a few classes in ballroom styles, salsa, or even line dancing.

cruise days tv

You might even have the chance to get a bit of one-on-one instruction during your free class from some of the ship’s production show members! On a recent Royal Caribbean cruise, Mr. SBC and I tried a tango class with pro dancers from Argentina (we had a ball, but we’re not ready for Strictly Come Dancing just yet).

10. Dress up for formal night

If your cruise line has formal nights, they’ll usually take place on sea days. Why not take the opportunity to play dress-up?

cruise days tv

Cruise lines often offer their fanciest menus in the main dining room on formal nights (think lobster tails and prime cuts of steak), so don’t miss it!

11. Try a cooking class

Cruise ships are famous for their decadent, multi-course meals. The food is one of my favorite reasons for cruising! But what if you could take some of those recipes (and the expertise needed to create them) back home with you?

cruise days tv

Enter cruise ship cooking classes. Whether you choose a simple sushi-rolling tutorial or an hours-long gourmet meal class, you’ll come away with some pro cooking skills and new dishes to impress your friends. The best part? You get to eat the fruits of your labors at the end of class.

12. Indulge at the spa

Most cruise ships offer a full-service spa and salon, with a range of treatments from a basic pedicure to luxurious facials and massages (for a fee, of course).

Sea days are usually pretty busy at the cruise ship spa, so book your spot as early as you can to enjoy your well-deserved pampering session.

13. Read a book

Never have time to read at home? Pack a couple of those novels you’ve been meaning to get through. You have plenty of time and zero responsibilities on a sea day!

cruise days tv

Enjoy your book by the pool, or find a quiet spot away from the action. Even the busiest cruise ships have plenty of cozy, peaceful areas perfect for reading.

14. Play a board or card game

Love playing games? Pack your favorite game or borrow one from your ship’s game room or library. We love playing on the pool deck, but you’ll also find lots of tables in your ship’s lounges to play a game with family and friends.

cruise days tv

If you just want to play cards, you can often get a deck at Guest Services. They’ll usually have casino-used cards that they give to guests at no charge.

15. Hit the gym

Fitness buffs will love the ocean-view fitness center on a cruise ship! Most cruise lines offer modern equipment on their ships—treadmills and ellipticals, weight machines, and free weights.

cruise days tv

Or maybe you’re looking to start a new fitness routine? A sea day is the perfect time to give it a try. Many ships also offer personal training in their fitness centers.

Read more: How to Avoid Gaining Weight on a Cruise

16. Try your luck in the casino

Sea days are usually the only time the ship’s casino is open all day. Most ships offer a variety of slots, video poker, and table games.

cruise days tv

If you’ve never played at a casino table, most cruise lines offer free beginners’ courses to get you up to speed on the rules and etiquette.

Cruise pro tip : Join a slot pull on a sea day! Fellow passengers will pool some money (usually about $20 each), and each member of the group shares in the winnings.

17. Take some photos

Whether you’re a shutterbug or you’d like to have some professional portraits taken, a sea day is great for taking photos of your family and friends around the ship.

cruise days tv

The ship’s professional photographers usually wander around in the evening, and having your picture taken is free (you only pay for the prints you want). Or book a photo studio session for more formal shots.

18. Enjoy a wine or whiskey tasting

You might stick to your tried-and-true favorite vino or spirits when you’re on land, but why not branch out and try some new drinks on a lazy sea day afternoon?

cruise days tv

Many cruise lines offer wine or whiskey tastings. Some even have Champagne or martini tastings. Sample some new-to-you offerings, guided by an expert bartender, for a small fee.

Cruise pro tip: If you have a drink package on your cruise, tasting sessions aren’t covered. But nothing’s stopping you from making your own DIY tasting menu (minus the expert guidance)!

19. Unleash your inner rockstar at karaoke

Even if you don’t have perfect pitch or a charismatic stage presence, karaoke is everyone’s favorite way to live out your rockstar dreams on a cruise.

cruise days tv

Pick your favorite song, or get up with a group of friends to sing a party favorite (Love Shack, anyone?) Some cruise lines even offer a family karaoke hour so even the littlest cruisers can belt out a tune.

20. Play shuffleboard

Before I discovered cruising , I thought that playing shuffleboard was just about the only thing that people did on cruises. Boy was I wrong. Although there’s so much more to do on a cruise, this traditional deck game is actually really fun!

cruise days tv

And it’s not just the very old who enjoy shuffleboard. In my very non-scientific study of shuffleboard players on my last ten or so cruises, I’d say the average age of people I see playing falls somewhere in the older Gen Z to Millennial range. Give it a try!

21. Walk a mile on the Promenade Deck

If strolling in the fresh sea air with gorgeous ocean views sounds like your favorite way to burn off those amazing cruise desserts, why not aim to walk a mile on the Promenade Deck?

cruise days tv

You can always set your smart watch or phone to track your distance on a solo walk. But some cruise lines have a “walk a mile” activity where you can get some exercise and meet new friends.

22. Have breakfast in bed

If you took my first piece of advice about things to do on a sea day (sleeping in!) you’ll love this tip. Did you know that almost every cruise line offers free room service breakfast?

cruise days tv

Just fill out a breakfast hang tag and put it on the outside of your door the night before. (Ask your room steward if you don’t see a hangtag.) You’ll wake up to your choice of continental breakfast favorites to enjoy in bed or on your balcony.

Cruise pro tip: It’s customary to give your room service delivery person a tip, so have some small bills on hand (one dollar per guest is just fine). Learn more about tipping on a cruise ship .

23. Join an exercise class

Most cruise lines offer a range of free and/or paid exercise classes. From basic stretch and meditation to yoga, Pilates, and Zumba, you’ll find classes for all fitness levels.

cruise days tv

I especially love Holland America’s fitness classes , with fun options like TRX Suspension Training and RYDE indoor cycling.

24. Learn all about your next port

Can’t wait until you reach your next port? Use part of your sea day to learn more about the area before you’re back on dry land.

cruise days tv

Cruise ships usually offer a port talk on sea days. Sometimes they just focus on shopping, but some sailings will also have an expert talk focusing on the port’s history and key sites to visit. I always leave a port talk with valuable insight on my next port of call!

25. Try a scavenger hunt

Frequent cruisers are used to giggly groups of pre-teens bouncing up to them and asking what seems to be a very random question. (On our last cruise, they asked if we won any money in the casino.) They’re not just nosy, they’re doing a scavenger hunt!

cruise days tv

This kids’ club favorite pastime is now becoming popular with adults, especially for larger family and friend groups. Some cruise lines even have grown-up scavenger hunts on the official agenda. On a recent sailing, we were challenged to find the most crew members hailing from different nations!

26. Take a behind-the-scenes tour

Most cruisers never have the opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes on the ship, but it’s really fascinating! Booking a tour on a sea day can be pricey, but you’ll get to see those hidden areas where they make the magic happen.

cruise days tv

But some behind-the-scenes tours are free! We’ve enjoyed a complimentary backstage tour of the theater on a Princess cruise, and on our UnCruise Adventures Alaska sailing we had a free galley tour (led by the head chef) as well as a tour of the bridge.

27. Join a meetup

Do you love meeting new people with similar interests? Many cruises offer meetups for people who enjoy a hobby or craft—knitting and crochet are perennially popular. Or maybe you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community, or a young adult or solo cruiser. There’s probably a meetup planned for you.

cruise days tv

Don’t see a meetup scheduled for your interest group? Host your own! Just ask at Guest Services or chat with your Cruise Director to find out how to schedule and host a meetup.

28. Explore the ship

Many cruisers do a bit of ship exploring on embarkation day , but with so much to do on that busy first day, it’s a challenge to actually see the whole ship before you find yourself falling into bed.

cruise days tv

Sea days are made for ship exploration! I enjoy taking time on the first sea day morning to head to the top deck, and wander my way to the bottom. I guarantee you’ll find lots of fun venues and spots you’ll want to revisit later in the cruise.

29. Try an acupuncture session

Bear with me on this one, because I know being stuck with needles doesn’t sound like a fun thing to do on a sea day! Acupuncture treatments have become very popular on cruises because of their pain-relieving benefits. Mr. SBC and I have recently started booking sessions on every cruise, and it makes a huge difference (we both have painful spinal arthritis).

cruise days tv

I won’t lie and say it’s not expensive—but you can often get a free “taster” session, including a one-on-one consultation and a few needles—at your ship’s spa.

30. Watch a game in the sports bar

Do you love knocking back a couple of pints and enjoying your favorite game on TV? Cruise ships have satellite television, and your ship’s sports bar is the place to be on a sea day.

cruise days tv

Bring the gang along, or meet some new sports-loving friends (I can’t promise they’ll root for your team, sorry).

31. Relax in the thermal suite

Does a day of pure relaxation sound like the perfect use of your sea day? Many cruise ships offer a thermal suite, featuring amenities like heated tile loungers, thalassotherapy pools, salt rooms, and infrared saunas.

cruise days tv

You can purchase access to your ship’s thermal suite for the entire week, or by the day. Passes sell out fast, so if you want one for a sea day, it’s a good idea to pre-book as early as you can.

32. Play mini-golf

Whether you call it putt-putt, crazy golf, or miniature golf (or do you call it something else? Let me know in the comments below!) putting your way through a tiny golf course is a time-honored sea day tradition.

cruise days tv

Even many smaller ships and older ships have a complimentary mini-golf course, and it’s a fun cruise activity for passengers of all ages.

33. Book your next cruise!

Those of us who’ve booked our next cruise onboard a sailing know that it’s one of the best ways to save money on cruises . You’ll earn free onboard credit, which (depending on the cruise line) you’ll be able to use on your next cruise or maybe even your current one!

cruise days tv

But you don’t need to choose your sailing or pay for your cruise in full. Just put down a small deposit, and you have plenty of time to choose once you return home. You can even book through your favorite cruise travel agent using this Future Cruise Deposit.

Cruise pro tip: Even if you don’t have an internet package for your sailing, many cruise lines offer complimentary access to their own website—perfect for researching future cruises on board! Just make sure you’re in airplane mode and connected to the same free Wi-Fi you use for the smartphone app.

How to find out when and where the best sea day activities will be on your cruise

So where can you find out all about these amazing sea day activities on your cruise? Reading your daily cruise planner on the ship is the best way to discover what sea day activities are coming up on your specific sailing.

Whether you use the paper copy that arrives in your stateroom each evening, or you prefer using your cruise line’s smartphone app, this is where you’ll find all the best things to do on a sea day—along with when and where you can join in on the fun!

What are your favorite things to do on sea days on a cruise? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!

Sea Days on a Cruise: What to Know, Tips, and More

While you might picture exotic ports of call for your cruise, the vast majority of the trip is actually spent on the ship. It’s where you’ll explore and play sailing from port to port. It’s where you’ll eat, sleep, and relax. In fact, we calculated that on a 7-day cruise, roughly 85% of your vacation is actually spent on the cruise ship .

And when you have a sea day on your cruise, it’s where you’ll spend the entire day taking in all the ship has to offer. You can think of it as the ship being your port of call for the day.

So what exactly do you need to know about your sea day(s) on a cruise? Below, we cover the ins and outs of what to expect.

What Is a Day at Sea on a Cruise?

cruise days tv

A day at sea — also called a sea day — is exactly what it sounds like. During most traditional cruises there will be one or two days where the ship isn’t in port. Instead, you are simply sailing on the open ocean for the entire day.

During this time, the cruise ship is your playground. All the venues onboard will be open for you to enjoy and the staff will put on entertainment and activities for passengers. Of course, you don’t have to do anything. The day is completely your own to enjoy. If you want to spend it relaxing in the room or just working on your tan, you can do that.

Think of it just like if you went to a resort on land. You can do whatever you like on the grounds (in this case the ship).

Why Have Days at Sea?

While we wouldn’t call these days controversial, there are definitely some passengers that love having a sea day. Others can do without as they prefer to be out and about exploring ports. So why are these ‘portless’ days a thing?

In many cases, when a ship is traveling to a distant port of call it can take more than a day of sailing to reach the destination. In that case, there is no choice but to have a travel day on the open ocean.

But sometimes a ship could easily make another port when sailing overnight and there is still a day at sea. In these cases, sea days are used to extend the length of a cruise without another port. Take a three-day cruise from Miami that stops in Nassau and a private island. That same route can be extended to four days (which means a longer cruise and higher fares) simply by having a day at sea included.

What Is There to Do on Sea Days?

Cruise pool at sea

As mentioned, when on a sea day the entire ship is open to passengers. That means there is as much to do as your particular cruise ship offers.

First, things like the casino, shops, and restaurants will all be open to enjoy. The spa is also wide open (and likely more busy). If you’ve been wanting to get a spa treatment during the time at sea, be sure to book it ahead of time to ensure there is room.

The ship’s crew will also put on all sorts of activities and things to do to keep passengers entertained. This can range from trivia to theater shows to sports contests to belly-flop competitions on some lines.

The most popular thing to do on a sea day, however, is to hit the pool deck. Assuming the weather is good, this will be by far the most crowded area of the ship during the middle of the day with hundreds or thousands soaking up the sun.

But whatever you do is up to you. Some folks just like to relax, sleep in, and take their time without the hassle of rushing on and off the ship like when in port.

For more, see our article on things to do on a sea day here .

What’s Fun About These Days?

cruise days tv

For some people, the sea days are their favorite time on the cruise. When visiting a port of call, the day can be fun but also hectic. You have a limited time in port whereby you need to get up, get ready, leave the ship, explore, and make it back before the departure time.

Compared, sea days are much more relaxed. With no schedule to meet, the entire day is yours to plan however you want. And because the entire ship is open, that means you can do anything that’s available on board. There is also a lot more to do that’s put on by the staff compared to port days.

If vacation to you is sleeping in, grabbing brunch, getting some pool time, hitting the spa, eating a meal, and watching a show, there’s a lot to like about these days on the cruise.

What’s Not So Fun?

We mentioned that not everyone is a fan of sea days. So what’s the downside?

For one, it’s these days when you’re most likely to notice the crowds on the ship. Cruise lines are smart about scheduling things around the ship to spread out the crowd some. Even so, popular areas — such as the pool at midday will definitely be busy. After all, everyone will be on the ship the entire day and looking for things to do.

As well, days at sea can be a bit more boring if you’re someone that likes to see and do a lot. Compared to exploring a new port, the ship is relatively small (no matter how large it is). That means after several hours you’ve likely seen and done everything. We will say that it’s tough to get bored for a day, but when we’ve sailed with two sea days back to back, we were absolutely ready to get off the ship when it finally docked in port.

Tips for Sea Days

Sunny deck chair on a cruise.

When you are on the ship while on a day at sea, here are a few things you will want to consider…

Spas can be more expensive: Sometimes cruise lines offer discounted services for spa treatments when the ship is in port to drum up business. On days at sea with everyone on the ship, prices can be more expensive. If you don’t mind the higher prices then still be sure to book ahead of time to reserve your space just to ensure that treatments aren’t all booked up. Spa services are much more popular when the ship is at sea.

Head to the pool early or late: The popularity of the pool area during a sunny day at sea can’t be overestimated. It should be considered the heartbeat of the ship. While you’ll always be able to find a lounger somewhere on the top deck, if you want to be by the pool then get there early (before 10 a.m.) or later in the day (after 3 p.m.). Between those times, expect it to be tough to find a spot to sit. The same thing goes for water-based attractions like waterslides on the ship.

Great day to take it slow: If your sea day comes early in the cruise, there might be a feeling that you have to rush things, especially if it’s the first full day of your cruise. After dozens of cruises, we still feel like this, with the idea that we have to see and do it all right at the start. Truth is, there is plenty of time on the ship. Even if you take it slow and easy on your day at sea, you’ll still have ample time to experience everything on the cruise.

Use it to explore: Should a day at sea come early in the cruise, we suggest taking some time during the day to simply explore the ship. Modern cruise ships are massive, with up to 20 decks in some cases. It’s easy to get lost and there may be spots you never see if you don’t purposely seek them out. Taking an hour or two to explore can help you get your bearings and make it easier to navigate the ship for the rest of the cruise.

Carnival cruise ship rescues nearly 30 people from adrift vessel

cruise days tv

A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stuck at sea on Sunday.

The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals who were signaling for help on a vessel that was adrift around 2:30 p.m. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time.

“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and officials in Roatan.

The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The ship was set to visit Roatan on Monday. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

I work from a cruise ship for 3 months a year. Here's how I stay productive at sea.

  • Walter Biscardi runs his travel business remotely from cruise ships for three months each year.
  • He said WiFi reliability has improved, but video calls and finding power outlets can be challenging.
  • Biscardi recommends Virgin Voyages for remote workers because of the spaces to work and the WiFi.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Walter Biscardi, a 59-year-old travel agent based in Orlando. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I used to work in film, television, documentary, and marketing, and I ran two creative agencies in Atlanta for 25 years.

A few years ago, my wife and I turned my second passion, travel, into " Where's Walter Travel ." We specialize in travel planning services for cruises , group vacations, theme park tours, and company retreats.

We live in an Orlando rental, but I run the travel-planning business from a cruise ship for three months out of the year.

We started taking advantage of our remote working situation after the pandemic

In a few short years of working on cruise ships, I've noticed that more and more people are starting to do the same thing.

We predominantly cruise the Caribbean. Last year, our three months were spread over six different trips on the Royal Caribbean , Oceania , Virgin Voyages , and Carnival cruise lines. If it were up to me, I'd be at sea for six months a year, but my wife prefers three.

This year, we'll be back on Virgin Voyages in June and on the Sun Princess in October. We're planning a few more, too.

WiFi speed and reliability onboard ships have been game-changers

I don't always look for speed but rather consistency and reliability.

Even though the WiFi is reliable on most ships , it's still not perfect, and you need to manage your expectations. The WiFi on ships is satellite-based, so the signal will be slower if there's a lot of cloud cover. Rain may also temporarily cut it out completely.

The WiFi signal in rooms can be weak. When I get on board, I walk around public places, look at the ceiling, and find the repeaters , which amplify the router's signal . I park myself under a repeater to work, so at least I know I'm getting the fastest signal.

Video calls can be dicey, but voice calls over WiFi work well

Most of my work is using emails, social media apps, and a web browser, so I don't tend to have problems. The upload speed is the most difficult thing about working on a cruise ship.

Related stories

Working from a cruise ship might not be for you if you're required to upload a video to YouTube or be on video for 100% of your Zoom calls. Zoom with video turned off works well. I post TikToks all day, but uploading to YouTube will fail almost every time.

Turn off your cell service on the ship, even if you have unlimited roaming overseas. Phones use satellite maritime cellular, and it's ridiculously expensive. I've heard of people who have come home with $1,000 cellular bills because they didn't turn off their roaming.

I can typically make most of my calls over WiFi, but you won't be able to on some ships. Texting from ship to land usually works well if you're using the same type of phone as the person you're messaging, but when you're texting cross-platform, sometimes it doesn't work.

Finding power outlets can be challenging

Typically, if you need to put in a full day of work connected to power, you need to stay in your room. One tip to finding power when you're looking around public areas is to see where they plug in the vacuum cleaners.

I strongly recommend bringing a powerboard with multiple USB sockets. I have one with 10 USB connections, so I can charge my phone, GoPro, and other devices simultaneously.

Virgin Voyages ships are the most friendly for remote workers

The galley on a Virgin Voyages ship is set up like a coffee shop, with easily accessible power and USB sockets at the table. There are dozens of outlets, as they're inviting people to bring their laptops and work from the ship.

I usually upgrade to the premium WiFi option, which can cost anywhere from $19 to $39 per day on most lines, but Virgin only charges $10 per day to upgrade.

I work in an office at home, so working on a cruise is a big change

I operate at sea as I do on land, with the same office hours available to my clients other than when I know we're going on an excursion.

Cruise ships are comparable to remote working spaces, but they offer so much more. On a cruise, almost everything is included: breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, entertainment, and most amenities.

If I want to take a break from work, I go to the pool. When I finish for the day, I'll go to the theater to see a show.

Meeting places are usually free on a cruise ship. Generally, all you have to do is reserve a conference room. AV facilities are usually included too, although you may have to pay a setup fee.

Remember to be respectful — many people are on board for a vacation. I've been out by the pool and seen people taking business calls on speakerphone, which is ridiculously annoying.

I suggest picking at least one port on every cruise and make it a 'ship day'

About 75% of people will get off the ship at any port, so staying on board feels like you have the whole place to yourself.

Activities like the pools will still be open, and the spas will often discount their services by 20-40% on port days.

Of course, I still recommend getting off and exploring as much as possible — that's what cruises are for.

Cruise packing list: The ultimate guide to what to pack for a cruise

Erica Silverstein

Packing for a cruise can be complicated, especially for first-timers who aren't 100% sure what to expect. The task is made even more stressful because you can't run to the nearest shopping mall to pick up something you forgot when you're sailing in the middle of the ocean.

What you need is a cruise packing list that accounts for cruise line dress codes for daywear and evening wear, the various activities you'll do on board and in port, the gear you need for travel and to enhance your cruise cabin, and the necessities you need for daily life and unexpected emergencies.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

We've listed 103 essentials you should always pack for any cruise vacation. Follow our cruise packing list to avoid packing mistakes and be prepared for anything on your next sailing.

On every cruise line, daytime clothing is casual, and on a big-ship cruise, nearly anything goes. On a more upscale or luxury cruise ship, casual daywear tends to be more fashion-forward and stylish, so you might feel out of place in your cheap tee from Target.

Of course, the destination and weather will dictate what exactly makes it onto your cruise packing list. For a Caribbean cruise , you'll want plenty of beachwear; for an Alaska cruise , you'll want rugged clothes for hiking and warm layers for the frequently changing weather. In the Middle East and Asia, you might need an outfit that covers the shoulders and knees for visiting religious sites.

Remember that any destination can be unseasonably warm, cold or wet, so pack a jacket for that Bahamas cruise or a short-sleeved top for an Arctic sailing — just in case.

If you want to stay fit on your cruise and plan to hit the onboard gym or go biking in port, pack activewear. I once forgot to pack socks on a short warm-weather cruise and was disappointed when I wasn't allowed on the ship's bungee trampoline.

Cruisers traveling in a group should consider planning matching outfits, especially if they wish to take group photos on board. Group T-shirts are common, as are color-coordinated outfits for everyone from the kids to the grandparents.

Most important of all: Double-check that you've packed underwear. You're welcome.

Pack one outfit for every day, or plan to do laundry on your cruise ship . I like to look for ways to reuse pieces to save space. For example, I'll dress up a top with a skirt or dress pants for dinner, then wear the same shirt with jeans in port the following day. Or, I'll bring one solid color dress and wear it twice, but with different accessories.

Here's your daywear packing list (adjust numbers for the length of your sailing):

  • Casual tops
  • Workout wear
  • Bathing suits and swimwear
  • Cover-up or swim shirt
  • Sweatshirt or sweater

Evening clothing

cruise days tv

Some cruise lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , have a relaxed attitude toward dinner attire, and you can come as you are. Other lines, especially the more upscale ones, have strict dress codes for dinner. For cruises on those ships, you'll need to add some nicer outfits to your cruise packing list.

Evening wear on cruise ships tends to fall into two categories: resort casual and elegant. For casual nights, think of a date-night style. Some cruise lines do allow jeans in the evening; pair them with cute tops and nice shoes.

Elegant or formal nights bring out cocktail dresses, suits, ties and jackets. If formalwear is not your thing, choose room service, or go to the buffet or a casual restaurant for dinner to skip dressing up. Some luxury cruise lines will not allow underdressed passengers into certain restaurants or entertainment venues on formal nights.

Pro tip: Many cruise ships turn up the air conditioning at night. Pack a light sweater or dressy shawl to keep you comfortable in cool onboard restaurants and theaters.

Don't forget to pack outfits for cruise ship theme nights. Popular themes include white night, pirate night and Halloween — and, yes, cruisers do go all-out with costumes. Check with your cruise line to see which parties or theme nights will take place, and then pack accordingly.

Consider an eye patch or swashbuckling hat for Disney Cruise Line 's Pirate Night, a white sundress for Norwegian Cruise Line's White Hot Night and some neon leggings for Carnival Cruise Line 's '80s night.

Definitely don't forget the ultimate evening wear — comfy pajamas — especially if you're sharing a cabin with family or friends.

Here's your eveningwear packing list:

  • Skirt and blouse
  • Wrap or sweater
  • Button-down shirt or polo
  • Dress slacks or nice jeans
  • Suit or tuxedo for formal night
  • Cocktail dress or gown for formal night
  • Theme cruise attire and costumes

It's easy to fill a carry-on with footwear alone when packing for a cruise. The must-have basic is a comfortable pair of travel shoes for the flight, ship and walking in port.

Other types of footwear to add to your cruise packing list are sneakers for athletic activities, flip-flops for the pool and beach, and dress shoes for dinner. (Ladies, try to match your outfits, so you only need to bring one pair of heels.) You might also want casual or athletic sandals, hiking boots or water shoes for rocky beaches.

Related: 13 things you should do before every cruise

Pro tip: Lay out all the pairs of shoes you think you need for the cruise, and then decide which shoes can do double duty and which you can leave at home. For example, on a Caribbean cruise, a sturdy pair of waterproof athletic sandals (like Keens) can multi-task as travel shoes, beach shoes and rugged activity footwear. A comfy pair of flats can pair with your casual daywear and your fancy evening attire.

Here's your footwear packing list:

  • Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes
  • Water shoes
  • Hiking boots
  • Dress shoes for the evening
  • Slippers for in-cabin use

Accessories and gear

Once you've packed all the clothing, it's time to accessorize.

For sunny days, men and women will want to bring hats and sunglasses. On cold-weather cruises, you'll need a warm beanie, scarf, gloves and waterproof gear. (Antarctica and Arctic cruises have unique packing lists, so check with your cruise line.)

Don't forget belts, jewelry and ties for evening dress. Have a little fun with it — you're on a cruise.

Don't forget to add these accessories to your cruise packing list:

  • Wide-brimmed sun hat or baseball hat
  • Rain jacket and/or pants
  • Pashmina or shawl

Toiletries and medicine

cruise days tv

Like hotels, cruise ships typically provide soap and shampoo in your cabin. Some also offer conditioner and body lotion. However, it's hard to know whether your hair will respond well to the onboard products or if you'll hate the scent.

It's always safer to pack your own toiletries. Bring more than you think you'll need because it may be hard to find your favorite brands in foreign ports, and cruise ships sell necessities at inflated prices. (Here are a few more things you should never buy on a cruise ship or in port .)

Although you'll find hand sanitizer stations throughout your cruise ship, you'll still want to pack your own.

Sunscreen is essential; look for reef-safe versions if you plan on swimming in the ocean. Bug spray is also useful, especially in Alaska, where people joke that the mosquito is the state bird.

It's always smart to pack a first aid kit for your cruise; make sure it contains seasickness remedies if you're sensitive to the motion of the ocean. Over-the-counter medications are pricey on board, so bring the brands you most commonly use. If you take prescription medicine, bring enough for the trip and a few extra days' worth, just in case.

Pack these toiletries and medications for your cruise, preferably in your carry-on bag:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Hair-styling products
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Glasses, contacts and contact lens solutions
  • Razor and shaving cream
  • Moisturizer
  • Body lotion
  • Lip balm (consider one with SPF protection)
  • Soap (if you're picky about scents or ingredients)
  • Feminine products
  • Hand sanitizer (gel or wipes)
  • Seasickness remedies (patches, pills, ginger candies and acupressure wristbands)
  • Pain-relief medication, such as Tylenol or ibuprofen
  • Allergy medication
  • Upset stomach medication

Travel gear

cruise days tv

Not all of us are lucky enough to live an hour or two from a cruise port. Many cruisers have to fly or road trip to their departure port and need to pack for this travel as well. Make sure your cruise packing list accounts for your pre- and post-cruise travel needs, as well as items useful for your time on board.

For long and overnight flights to your cruise, pack accessories for the plane. If you've scheduled a pre-cruise hotel stay, consider packing the necessities for that overnight in a separate bag so you don't need to unpack and repack your main suitcase.

Related: 10 must-have travel accessories for less than $15

You'll want to pack your tablet, portable video game system and e-reader for both your pre-cruise travel and the sailing itself. Don't forget all the related charging cables. Or, skip the tech and bring a few books, as many cruise ships no longer offer onboard libraries.

It should go without saying, but you are responsible for packing necessary travel documents, including your cruise/flight/tour tickets, passport book or passport card (or birth certificate) and visa paperwork. Do not put these items in your checked bags. Pack them in your carry-on so they're always on hand and less likely to go missing.

I'm a fan of bringing a day bag for carrying things around the ship (like toting my book, water bottle and cover-up to the Lido Deck pool) and a small purse for carrying my key card, lipstick and tissues at night. Some folks prefer to bring a lanyard to keep their cruise room key card close at hand.

If you like to walk about with your morning coffee or tea, you can't get a to-go cup at the buffet unless you're paying extra for a latte or espresso. Pack a travel coffee mug so you can fill up on the free stuff. I also recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and filling it up at the buffet or even a bar. It helps reduce plastic waste, and you don't bust your budget buying bottled water.

  • Neck pillow
  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Regular headphones or earbuds
  • Tablet or laptop
  • Portable video game system
  • Playing cards or other small diversions
  • E-reader or physical books
  • Visa documents
  • Cruise ticket or documents
  • Travel insurance information
  • Tour booking information
  • Small purse
  • Water bottle

Cabin enhancements

cruise days tv

First-time cruisers don't realize all the cruise ship cabin hacks they can employ to enhance their onboard accommodations. Usually, all you need to pack are a few key items from home.

Many cruise cabin walls and doors are magnetic (Did I just blow your mind?), so I like to pack magnets both as fun decor and for organizational purposes. Magnetic clips and hooks can help keep paperwork and hats off the in-room desk and couch, while a magnetic whiteboard can be useful for leaving notes for your travel companions.

Newer cruise ships are designed so every cabin has enough electrical outlets and USB ports conveniently located throughout the room. However, older cruise ships have a sad lack of outlets. Unless you want to constantly battle your travel companions for charging priority, pack a power strip, multi-prong outlet or power adapter/current converter so you can charge multiple devices at once (and use any 220V European outlets in the cabin).

Just be sure that your power strip doesn't include a surge protector; those are banned from most cruise ships, as are extension cords.

Related: Packing for a cruise? These items aren't allowed on board

For evenings on board, pack a night light or battery-operated candles so you can find your way to the bathroom in the dark. A small, portable sound machine is helpful for blocking out hallway noise if your cabin is in a noisy area of the ship, such as close to the elevator banks.

You can sweeten your cabin bathroom by bringing a bathroom spray to mask unpleasant odors. Traveling with babies and toddlers who hate showers? A small inflatable kiddie pool or tub packs down small and can be used to give your little one a bath.

You don't need to pack a clothesline to dry wet items because one is usually hidden in your cabin's shower. However, I do recommend bringing a laundry bag or pop-up hamper to keep dirty clothes separate and off the cabin floor. Chair clips are useful if you plan to dry your clothes on the balcony and don't want them to blow away.

Pack these items to enhance our cruise cabin:

  • Power strip or multi-pronged outlet without surge protection
  • Power converter
  • Night light
  • Battery-operated candles
  • White noise machine
  • Bathroom spray
  • Inflatable kiddie pool
  • Pop-up hamper or laundry bag
  • Chair clips

Port day gear

cruise days tv

You'll want to pack items specific to the activities you aim to do in port. Leave room on your cruise packing list for items that will change based on your destination and planned tours.

No matter where you cruise, you'll want a strong but lightweight backpack to stow everything you want to take off the ship with you. I love the kind with mesh pockets on the side to tuck away a water bottle.

In especially scenic destinations, such as Alaska or Scandinavia, you might want to bring binoculars and/or a DSLR camera (rather than relying on your phone for photos). Don't forget accessories like extra batteries, chargers and memory cards.

On beachy cruises, you'll want a beach bag, sand toys for the kids and perhaps your own snorkeling gear. Wet bags (or even plastic zip-top bags) will keep your wet stuff from leaking onto everything on your way back to the ship.

Related: 8 must-pack accessories for your next beach vacation

For water sports like kayaking, consider a dry bag to stow your camera gear, smartphone and wallet and prevent them from getting wet. Waterproof cases for your cellphone and camera are also useful, as well as "beach wallets" that let you go into the water with your credit cards and cash on your person.

  • Camera, memory cards, portable tripod and other accessories
  • Waterproof dry bag
  • Waterproof phone and/or camera case
  • Waterproof beach wallet
  • Snorkel, mask and fins
  • Beach toys for kids (such as packable pails and inflatable floats)
  • Retractable hiking poles
  • Packaged snacks (such as protein or granola bars) for long excursions
  • Lightweight packable travel towels if you want something that folds up smaller than the bulky cruise ship beach towels

Miscellaneous items to pack for your cruise

cruise days tv

Some must-pack items for cruises defy categorization but are important nonetheless. Don't leave them off your cruise packing list.

Cruise lines have strict rules about what types of beverages and alcohol you can bring on a cruise ship . If you're picky about wine, many lines will let you bring on a 750 ml bottle or two. Pack your favorite, but be prepared to pay a corkage fee if you drink it at an onboard bar or restaurant.

If you plan to purchase wine in port to bring home, you'll also want to pack bubble wrap or wine protector bags to get your bottles home safely.

Some lines, such as Holland America and Carnival, also allow you to bring on a limited number of cans of nonalcoholic drinks such as soda, juice or seltzer water. This can cut down on your bar bill or fuel your Diet Coke obsession should your ship carry only Pepsi.

I'm sure I don't need to remind anyone to bring their cell phone on vacation (but remember to pack the charging cables). However, you might not know to download your cruise line's app before you leave home. The app will show you the daily schedule, deck plans, dining reservations, shore excursion options and more. Many apps, like the one from Celebrity Cruises , even allow you to chat with other passengers while you're connected to the cruise ship's internet . (Remember to keep your devices in airplane mode to avoid accruing large at-sea roaming charges.)

You'll want cash, especially small bills, for tipping porters and purchasing small souvenirs in port. Depending on your itinerary, you might want to acquire some foreign currency in advance. Otherwise, you can use an ATM once you arrive in port. (ATMs almost always offer a better exchange rate than airport kiosks.)

Bring a credit card that does not charge foreign transaction fees, so you don't spend more than you need to abroad. (If you don't have one, consider applying for one of the best credit cards for travel .)

What not to pack for a cruise

Now that you know what to put on your cruise packing list, you'll also want to know what to leave out. Some items you might be tempted to pack are outright banned by the cruise lines . Others simply aren't necessary.

Here's what you can leave out of your suitcase.

  • Linens and towels
  • Hand soap (unless you're picky)
  • High chair and portable crib (your ship will provide these)
  • Coffeemakers and other appliances with heating elements
  • Illegal drugs (including marijuana and CBD products, even if they're legal in your home state or departure port)
  • Extension cords
  • Beverages beyond the modest allotment of wine or nonalcoholic drinks in cans
  • Meat, cheese, fruit or other non-prepackaged food (check with your cruise line if you have dietary restrictions and require special food items)

Bottom line

Many cruisers tend to overpack when it comes to clothes and shoes but sometimes forget about other necessities. When you take your suitcase out of the closet and begin packing for your next itinerary, refer to this list and be sure you're covered when it comes to both clothing and those all-important accessories.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.
