Having conquered the world of technology in Gadget Man, acclaimed Director, Author and BAFTA-winning actor Richard Ayoade deserves a break. But there’s a problem; he hates going on holiday. For Richard, travel is boring and stressful and takes far too long. Surely there must be a way to make it more fun, more efficient, and less tedious? ‘Travel Man’ is Richard’s chance to show us where we’re going wrong by having the most culturally efficient holiday possible, with all the boring bits taken out.

‘Mary & George’ Stars Nicholas Galitzine and Tony Curran Explain Why Episode 4 is a Turning Point for George & James’s Romance

S tarz‘s Mary & George is the story of an ambitious mother, Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), and her exceptionally charming son, George (Nicholas Galitzine). It’s also the true story of how George seduced King James I (Tony Curran), propelling his family to the top of the heap in Jacobean England, to his mother’s delight. However, in Mary & George Episode 4 “The Wolf & the Lamb,” George’s feelings for James get muddied. He’s not only tempted by another man, but also begins to actually feel something other than cold, mercenary thoughts towards his older lover. By traveling with James to Scotland and learning about the king’s first doomed love with Lord Lennox, George’s relationship with James finally starts to resemble a real romance.

“This begins as a transactional relationship, explicitly transactional, and becomes something deeper,” Mary & George creator D.C. Moore told Decider. “We’re trying to really chart that in Episode 4 when they both go to Scotland together.”

While in Scotland, George learns more about the trauma that molded James as a young man. History nerds will know that James I of England’s mother was Mary, Queen of Scots, and his father was Henry, Lord Darnley. It’s well-known that Mary would be imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth and eventually executed on trumped up spy charges. The fear that the Catholic Mary could usurp Elizabeth’s throne was a constant source of anxiety during the Elizabethan era. However James’s father’s fate is even wilder. About eight months after James was born, his father was murdered, mostly likely by his mother’s next husband, the scheming Scottish lord Bothwell.

Needless to say, James grew up in a culture of paranoia, with the knowledge that his position of power put a target on his head. George not only gets to see the roots of that paranoia head on, but also learns that the one person who guided James was his first love, the older Lord Lennox.

“My connection with George Villiers definitely had a huge resonance of the past of my relationship with Lord Lennox,” Mary & George star Tony Curran told Decider. “I’ve met someone who reminded me of my first love, if you will, in George Villiers. It was a definitely a very profound moment for James.”

“I actually think in Episode 4 is really when we see the tenderness and the love — not being entirely transactional, a genuine care — growing for him,” Nicholas Galitzine told Decider. “George finding out about Lennox really humanizes James. He sees his vulnerabilities and the fact that he has been taken advantage of in the past.”

Curran thinks that the king’s backstory provides even more insight into what connects the two men.

“Something that Nick mentioned earlier [in another interview]…about Julianne and his relationship with Mary Villiers and how he wanted, you wanted love from your mother. It’s something that’s just sort of occurred to me and it’s sort of the idea that [George] wants that sort of tenderness from the matriarch of his family, his mother, and that’s something that King James never had,” Curran said.

“There’s a sort of correlation between George and James that the, as children they want that sort of validation and that sort of love from the parents, which I didn’t get because I never met my mother.”

Where do both George and James find that validation? Well, after Mary & George Episode 4, they find it in each other. Although, as Galitzine pointed out, it’s unclear how long this honeymoon period between James and George will last…

“I mean, how long that [romance] really lasts, remains to be seen, but there is a sort of a sense of domestic bliss at one point.”

The Ending of Them: The Scare Connects Back to Season 1

Them: The Scare Season 2 Ending Explained

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

Them is ostensibly an anthology series, and yet the ending of The Scare connects Season 2 back to the first. Episode 8 is particularly guilty of this, and the finale raises some serious questions about whether this is truly an anthology and not just an overarching, connected narrative.

As I briefly mentioned in my review of Them: The Scare , the stories are, for the most part, totally divorced. But the finale’s last-minute efforts to connect the two seasons are worthy of a bit of explanation, at the very least.

How are Dawn and Edmund Gaines connected?

In a tale as old as time, our heroine is deeply connected to the supernatural evil she finds herself battling. And in a similarly familiar twist towards the end of the season, we learn that Dawn and Edmund Gaines were twins.

Despite having been handed over together to Mott, the siblings did not remain together. Mott’s abuses broke Edmund’s psyche. When they were adopted, Edmund’s behavior was too much for Athena to cope with, and she sent him back to Mott. It’s a selfish decision, hard to reconcile.

Edmund’s trauma from the abuse informs his resentment for Dawn. He can’t accept that she doesn’t remember what happened to them when he is so haunted by it. In the finale, Edmund commits suicide to give himself over to The Scare, a symbolic manifestation of his trauma winning.

Dawn Remembers

Them: The Scare Season 2 Ending Explained

Them: The Scare Season 2 | Image via Prime Video

One of the aspects of the finale that does work is how it allows the past to creep through into the present, notably in the remnants of old abuses – broken clocks, scratches in the closet – still scarring the Mott house physically (and Edmund emotionally).

It also makes sense that acknowledging these past traumas and tragedies is what allows Dawn to “defeat” the Scare at the end of Them Season 2, or at least pull Edmund away from its influences before he can harm her or Kel.

In recalling some of their shared experiences, Dawn can relate to Edmund on an emotional level. And in doing that she can free him. Sure, he dies as a result, but at least his sister holds him while he does so. At least most of the people complicit in Mott’s abuse are gone.

The Charges Against Dawn Are Dropped

After vanquishing supernatural evil, the investigation into the death of McKinney seems a small affair.

Luckily, Dawn had recorded the racist detective attacking her, proving she killed him in self-defense. All the charges against her are rightly dropped.

Ultimately, though, Dawn leaves the force regardless, and it’s not hard to imagine why.

How is Them: The Scare connected to Season 1?

Okay, so let’s get into the important stuff. The end of Episode 8 reveals some explicit connections to Them: Covenant which binds the narratives together and suggests the show is less of an anthology than first appearances – and Prime’s marketing – suggested.

So, Dawn and Edmund were the children of Ruby Emory, the daughter of Henry and Lucky from Season 1. Ruby had taken the babies to the Mott house in the hopes of them growing up away from the supernatural evil that had plagued the Emory family, but no such luck in that regard.

At the end of Them: The Scare , Dawn roots through the box her mother left her and unearths a photo of the Emory family, noting her resemblance to Lucky.

And that’s not all! The ending of Them Season 2 sees Da Tap Dance Man present himself to Dawn.

'Shogun' finale recap: Hiroyuki Sanada explains Toranaga's masterful moves

travel man episode 1

Spoiler alert! The following article includes details of FX's "Shogun" finale.

Never count out Yoshii Toranaga in "Shogun."

Through nine episodes of FX's critically acclaimed series set in 17th-century Japan, the embattled warlord ( Hiroyuki Sanada ) has been down but never out in the deadly battle against his conspiring enemies: the powerful feudal lords on the Council of Regents.

After the explosive death of his prized vassal, Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai), in Episode 9, Toranaga flips the script and takes charge in the series finale ( now streaming on Hulu ). It's such a miraculous turnabout of fate that traitorous Kashigi Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano), before committing ritualistic suicide – known as seppuku – suggests Toranaga can control the wind. "I only study it," Toranaga responds.

"That's classic Toranaga style," Sanada tells USA TODAY. "He never throws the first punch or attacks first. He waits until the others make their move, and then he makes his strategy."

The Japanese star and first-time producer, who consulted on even minute details for the remake based on James Clavell's best-selling 1975 novel, helped break down the series finale.

Why did Mariko die? The honorable death deals a pivotal blow to Toranaga's enemies

Toranaga has dealt with the painful deaths of his son Yoshii Nagakado and his right-hand general Toda Hiromatsu. Yet each time he used the loss to gain an advantage over his enemies, just like Mariko, who put herself in front of a lethal explosion rather than be taken captive by the scheming Council of Regents leader Ishido Kazunari (Takehiro Hira).

"The deaths are so sad, but they are never wasted. They are meaningful deaths for Japan's future, and they give Toranaga strength," says Sanada. "It's not just loss if Toranaga ultimately wins."

Mariko's death disgusts Lady Ochiba (Fumi Nikaidổ), the mother of the Emperor's heir, who is too young to rule. Ochiba secretly writes to Toranaga, saying she will hold her son's troops back from battle against him, a stunning blow to her fiancée Ishido's plans.

Thanks to Mariko, Toranaga's battle against Ishido is over before it begins. "Instead of thousands of soldiers, Toranaga's strategy relied on one woman," says Sanada. "And it worked."

Wait, so Toranaga burned John Blackthorne's ship?

Marooned English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmos Jarvis) is changed by the selfless loss of his translator and true-love Mariko. The next blow is finding his ship has been destroyed, presumably by Portuguese rivals.

Toranaga secretly confides to doomed Kashigi that he allowed for his ally Blackthorne's ship to be burned, showing how much of a pawn the Westerner Blackthorne is on Toranaga's grand chessboard.

"Blackthorne is useful to Toranaga, who wants to keep him in Japan and not let him go back to England," says Sanada. "And when Blackthorne builds the ship again, he'll burn it again."

What part of 'Shogun' was Blackthorne's bad dream?

Previous episodes showed a future vision of an aged, forlorn Blackthorne on his English deathbed. The finale, titled "A Dream of a Dream," reveals Blackthorne has a new destiny. "Blackthorne had these dreams of being an old man in England. But after Mariko's death, he changed. He realized that wasn't his happiest life," says Sanada.

Blackthorne immediately shows signs of a greater purpose in Japan than his original selfish aim of establishing trade routes. His final moments are spent enthusiastically pulling his destroyed ship from the waters with local villagers, including former enemy Buntaro (Shinnosuke Abe), who was married to Mariko.

The Englishman and Toranaga exchange glances. "It's a symbolic scene for their real future," says Sanada. "Their look says they know each other with even a deeper friendship."

Blackthorne is loosely based on the life of William Adams, a navigator who was the first Englishman in Japan, married and had two children but never left the country.

Is Toranaga the shogun of 'Shogun'?

Sanada says Toranaga did not set out to claim the ultimate military-ruler title Shogun during the time of warring factions in Japan, "but he started thinking maybe only (having) the Shogun title can make a peaceful era, so the title followed him."

The finale shows a fleeting flash forward scene of armies gathered, with victorious Toranaga in full armor.

But there is no showdown battle. The "Shogun" ending features Toranaga staring into the sunlit ocean, pondering his future as the all-powerful military leader. The character is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and first shōgun of Japan's Tokugawa shogunate, who ushered an era of peace and prosperity in the warring country that lasted from 1603 to 1868.

"Toranaga can see the future he's dreamed about," says Sanada. "It's a simple but meaningful scene. Every Japanese schoolchild knows the real historical character and the peaceful era that followed. He's still a hero in Japan (and) my hero as well."

Will there be a 'Shogun' Season 2?

The FX series ends at exactly the end point of Clavell's novel. There are no plans for a new "Shogun" series.

"We don't have any more novel," says Sanada. "But we know what happened afterward based on real history. So let's see. Who knows?"

New netflix anime is a must-watch for fans of retro anime for one big reason.

For viewers who enjoy a twisted take on classic tales, a new Netflix anime might be what the doctor ordered, created with the help of an iconic team.

  • Netflix's The Grimm Variations changes the game by blending classic fairy tales with unique twists and engaging storytelling.
  • Collaborating with CLAMP brings a fresh and captivating flair to retro anime and manga fans looking for innovative adaptations.
  • The anime features familiar stories like Cinderella with unexpected developments, transforming them into compelling and exciting new takes.

Netflix original net animations have featured exciting adaptations of popular Japanese manga, but The Grimm Variations takes a different approach to adaptations. One central appeal to this new Netflix anime is the presence of the legendary CLAMP manga artists group among its production staff , which may appeal to retro fans. It brings The Grimm Variations from already having a bold premise to draw viewers' curiosity into one that commands their attention.

Regarding Netflix originals, The Grimm Variations has a relatively simple appeal as an anime. As the title suggests, it is an anthology of fairy tales by the Brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, given an impressive array of twists, including different settings, periods, and even genres. But viewers may be excited by one credit as the elegant title sequences roll, with retro fans rejoicing for the contribution of CLAMP.

Classic Fairytales Get a Twisted Retelling in New Anime From Netflix

Netflix anime the grimm variations features iconic manga artists group, clamp designed many characters for the new anime.

The Grimm Variations is a collaboration that features not only Netflix and WIT Studio but also twenty characters initially designed by legendary manga artist group CLAMP, Anime News Network reports. The anime is a Netflix anthology of Grimm fairy tales featuring distinctive one-shot characters created by the Cardcaptor Sakura, X, and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle creators . The unique character design gives flair and personality to each story, with specific highlights including "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Town Musicians of Bremen."

CLAMP is the name given to the iconic all-female mangaka group composed of Nanase Okawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi. Their art style incorporates cute, attractive character designs, such as in Cardcaptor Sakura , but The Grimm Variations also incorporates gloomier, moodier, even dystopian designs, like in Clover . This results in an elegant collaboration with WIT Studio for engaging stories with memorable characters, down to the charming watercolor-style framing device as Jacob and Wilhelm tell tales to a young Charlotte.

Twisted Takes on Classic Stories in This Netflix Original Anime

Clamp creates characters who'd fit in trigun or black mirror in the grimm variations.

The Grimm Variations tells six original twists on classic Grimm fairy tales, each bookended by appearances by the Brothers Grimm and Charlotte to narrate them. None of the tales are told as they are remembered initially, and in many cases, namely Little Red Riding Hood or The Elves and the Shoemaker. However, the result is a set of refreshing twists on what could have otherwise been a stale experience, thanks to CLAMP and WIT Studio's signature quality.

The six episodes of The Grimm Variations in the order they appear on Netflix:

  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • Hansel and Gretel
  • The Elves and the Shoemaker
  • The Town Musicians of Bremen
  • Pied Piper of Hamelin

Each story features a distinctive twist in its genre, along with unexpected developments in the plot. "The Town Musicians of Bremen" suddenly becomes a sci-fi Western in the style of Trigun , "Little Red Riding Hood" features a lethally capable title character, and "Pied Piper of Hamelin" plays like a quest for enlightenment. The Grimm Variations results in a fascinating anime collaboration using CLAMP 's signature style, elegant renditions of classical music, and mature themes. It'll surely be a hot topic for anime fans as they compare their favorite of its featured episodes.

‘Conan O’Brien Must Go’ Is a Keeper: TV Review

Legendary talk show host and hot wing evangelist returns to television with hilarious new Max travel show

Conan O'Brien tries Thai boxing with predictable results.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Popular on Variety

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.
