The 10 wildest attractions you’ll find on a cruise ship
There was a time when the biggest attraction on a cruise ship was a pool. Not even a pool with a waterslide. Just a pool. There also were shuffleboard courts. Really. That's not a cliche.
But as cruising regulars know, those days are long gone.
Over the past couple of decades, there's been an arms race of sorts among big-ship lines to come up with ever more over-the-top attractions for cruise ships — both for their outdoor lounge decks and interior public areas.
For more cruise guides, news and reviews, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.
Even if you've never been on a cruise, you're probably familiar with some of them. They're often at the core of cruise line marketing campaigns. We're talking about things like giant rock-climbing walls, surfing simulators and go-kart tracks. Now there are also zip lines (relatively short ones) on some cruise ships, as well as laser tag arenas and bumper car pavilions. Some vessels even have ice-skating rinks, and a few now have roller coasters. Yes, roller coasters!
In part, the trend is driven by the growth of family cruising, which has taken off in the 25 years since Disney placed its flag in the cruise world with the launch of Disney Cruise Line . Families love ships packed with all sorts of gee-whiz diversions.

It's also part of the megaresort trend that has swept the cruise world just as much as it has rolled through land-based destinations such as Orlando and Las Vegas. Vacationers love big, bustling megaresorts loaded with restaurants, bars, showrooms and all sorts of attractions, whether they are on land or sea.
To keep such vacationers happy, at least some cruise lines have added ever bigger, more amenity-filled vessels that boast ever more over-the-top attractions.
Not every cruise line has gone the big-attraction route. Princess Cruises , for instance, has eschewed the trend, sticking to a more classic style of big-ship cruising where top-deck diversions revolve around the quiet pool and lounge areas. Small-ship lines and luxury lines generally don't add big attractions to their vessels, either.
However, big attractions are the new normal for a core group of the world's biggest cruise lines. Among brands marketing to North Americans, there are four in particular that are at the forefront of the trend: Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line .
Related: The best cruise ship waterslides and watery fun zones
The first three of those lines dominate the world of big, bustling megaresorts at sea, with vessels that are as much as twice the size of the biggest cruise ships that existed 25 years ago. Carnival hasn't gone quite as big with most of its ships, but it still packs them with many fun-focused activities.
Here, we offer a look at 10 of the most unusual attractions now on cruise vessels — and where to find them.
Go-kart tracks
Ships that have them: Norwegian Viva (coming in August 2023), Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Bliss.
We aren't kidding about this one. There really are go-kart tracks on cruise ships — and we're not talking scaled-down miniature tracks. Since 2017, Norwegian has topped its four newest vessels with full-blown go-kart race courses that are almost as big and thrilling as the ones you find on land. The biggest of the four, on Norwegian Prima , spreads over a significant portion of three decks and is nearly 1,400 feet long.
Related: What it's like riding go-karts on a cruise ship
All four of the tracks are designed for serious go-karters. The cars — all electric-powered — can hit speeds of up to 27 mph, making for an exhilarating experience (trust us, we've tried the cars on all four ships). Technically, the cars can go even faster — more than 50 mph — but Norwegian has restricted them for safety.
Cost: $15 per ride for an eight-lap race that typically lasts about six to eight minutes.
Roller coasters
Ships that have them: Mardi Gras, Celebration and Jubilee (coming in December 2023).
Call them the most over-the-top attractions ever seen at sea. Two recently unveiled vessels — Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras and Celebration — have roller coasters on their top decks . Also, at least one more soon-to-debut ship — Carnival's Jubilee — will have one.
At 800 feet in length, the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coasters, as Carnival is calling them, aren't the biggest roller coasters ever. Or the fastest. They have motorcycle-like cars-for-two that only reach speeds of about 40 mph as they whiz around the funnel of their respective ships. But, hey, it's a roller coaster, on a cruise ship, more than 180 feet above the sea.
Cost: $15 per person for two laps of the track.
Bumper cars
Ships that have them: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas.
Quite a few cruise ships have basketball courts on their top decks. However, Royal Caribbean took the idea to a new level in 2014 with an indoor arena on its then-new Quantum of the Seas that could serve as not just a basketball court but also a pavilion for bumper cars, roller skating and even a circus school.
Dubbed the SeaPlex and now on four Royal Caribbean ships, the two-deck-high entertainment zone also has nooks for video games, Ping-Pong and foosball. But it's the bumper cars that are surely its biggest attraction. Brought out at various times during the day, the 16 cars are designed for families with seating for two (parents are encouraged to ride along with their little ones). They zip around at 5 mph and are tons of fun.
Cost: No charge.
Ice-skating rinks
Ships that have them: All of Royal Caribbean's Voyager-, Freedom- and Oasis-class vessels, plus Icon of the Seas (coming in January 2024).
There's something fabulously incongruous about ice skating while you're in the middle of the ocean. But that's exactly what you can do on 13 vessels operated by Royal Caribbean. The line began adding ice-skating rinks to its ships in 1999 with the debut of Voyager of the Seas, and they're now on every one of its Oasis-, Freedom- and Voyager-class vessels. They'll also be on Royal Caribbean's soon-to-debut Icon-class ships .
The ice-skating rinks are in the interiors of the ships, surrounded by stadium seating for up to 775 people. They're home to ice-skating shows that are among the most dazzling entertainment offerings at sea. But they also are used for free-time skating for passengers. Take note that the rinks feature real ice, not some sort of faux flooring. They even have Zamboni machines to keep them groomed. And, yes, Royal Caribbean will provide you with skates.
Water coasters
Ships that have them: Navigator of the Seas, Disney Wish, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.
Credit Disney for unveiling the first "water coaster" at sea — a water coaster being a variation of a waterslide that uses water jets to propel you up, down and around. Disney's two Dream-class ships — Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy — feature the 765-foot-long AquaDuck, a two-person water coaster that is designed for families (read: it's not too scary). It starts at the rear funnel of each ship and encircles the pool areas.
Disney's newest ship, Disney Wish , has something very similar called the AquaMouse.
Related: What it's like sailing Concierge level on a Disney ship
A bit more high-speed but still family-friendly is the 800-foot-long Blaster on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas — the longest waterslide at sea. Added to the ship in 2019, it's also a two-person ride that weaves like a crafty serpent around and above the ship's basketball court, rock-climbing wall and FlowRider surf simulator. It also twirls around a second waterslide in the same back-of-the-ship area.
Laser tag arenas
Ships that have them: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss, Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas.
The shoot-em-up fun of laser tag has arrived on the high seas in just the last few years, with laser tag arenas popping up on a dozen Royal Caribbean and Norwegian ships.
Norwegian has taken the biggest leap into laser tag arenas at sea, with dedicated areas for the game on three of its most recently unveiled vessels. The 2019-built Norwegian Encore has the largest and most elaborate laser tag area at sea yet. It's themed after the lost city of Atlantis and features an undulating serpent and crumbling walls as obstacles.
Related: What we loved (and didn't) about Norwegian Encore
On seven Royal Caribbean ships, laser tag is an add-on attraction held at their Studio B ice-skating rink complexes. The crew on the vessels set up a temporary, pop-up laser tag course on top of the ice-skating rinks called either the Battle for Planet Z or Clash of the Crystal City. This happens at select times during voyages. Similar temporary laser tag courses are also set up at select times at the SeaPlex centers found on Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas (these are the same complexes that offer bumper cars).
Cost: Royal Caribbean's laser tag attraction is included in the fare. On Norwegian ships, you'll pay $10 to join the laser shoot-out.
Robotic arm rides
Ships that have them: MSC Seascape.
The newest over-the-top amusement to pop up on a cruise ship is a robotic arm ride of the sort you sometimes see at small amusement parks. For now, there is only one at sea: The Robotron on MSC Cruises' MSC Seascape, which debuted in 2022. But we suspect this will be something that catches on.
Built by German robotics company Kuka, MSC Seascape's Robotron is perched at the top of the vessel, 19 decks above the waterline, and it offers three seats that restrain passengers as they are sent twisting and turning high above the water. At times, riders even are turned upside down.
Related: What it's like to ride the Robotron
If that sounds like it's too much thrill for your comfort, know that the ride has three speeds — slow, medium and fast — and participants can agree to set it at the slowest speed before they ride. Or not. If you like high-adrenaline attractions, by all means, go with the fast setting.
Note that you can also choose a song from a pre-selected list as background music during your ride, which will last three minutes.
Cost: $10 per ride.
Skydiving simulators
Unlike most of Royal Caribbean's big ships, the line's four Quantum-class vessels don't have ice-skating rinks. But they make up for it in the gee-whiz-attraction department with the only skydiving simulators at sea. The RipCord by iFly attractions are soaring vertical wind machines at the back of the ships that give you the sense of skydiving during 60-second "flights."
To ride, you'll don full skydiving gear, including a jumpsuit, helmet and safety glasses (all provided by Royal Caribbean) and accompany a trained iFly instructor into the vortex. It may look scary. But rest assured, children as young as 3 years old can — and have — done it.
Cost: No extra charge for one ride per cruise.
Observation capsules
These truly may be the oddest attractions ever conceived for a cruise ship. Called North Star and found on Royal Caribbean's Quantum-class ships, they are glass-enclosed observation capsules that soar hundreds of feet above sea level on giant mechanical arms. The idea is that you can ride it high to get the ultimate in middle-of-the-ocean views.
Royal Caribbean offers short trips into the sky to passengers on the Quantum-class ships, with a typical ride lasting 15 to 20 minutes. However, passengers can also book the pods for special occasions such as a wedding proposal or ceremony. The capsule can hold up to 15 people, including its operator.
Cost: Basic rides are typically included in the fare, with some exceptions. There's an extra charge to book the capsule for a special event.
Ships that have them: Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama.
Another offbeat option for getting high above the waves on a cruise ship is to take a turn on the SkyRide attractions found on three of Carnival's newer vessels. The suspended-in-the-sky rides comprise single-person, pedal-powered vehicles that you take on loops around 800-foot-long tracks found on each of the three ships.
Believe it or not, the little recumbent bicycle-like contraptions can reach speeds of up to 18 mph, though usually, you see people plodding along at far slower speeds. After all, it's all about the view.

Ride Bumper Cars on Your Next Cruise
As cruise ships get bigger and bigger, they also introduce newer and more innovative attractions. From zip lines and climbing walls to ice skating rinks and go-kart tracks , the latest cruise ships are jam-packed with things to do. One of the newer activities found on some ships is bumper cars.
First bumper cars at sea
Royal Caribbean introduced bumper cars on the Quantum of the Seas in 2014. When they designed that ship, they removed the popular Studio B Ice Skating Rink and instead put a large, multi-story indoor sports complex called SeaPlex. This place was designed to be the home for various activities like roller skating, basketball, pickleball, and dancing.
But why bumper cars? They have always been a staple or local amusement parks. First debuting in 1920, they’ve entertained the public for over 100 years. Both the young, and the young at heart, enjoy the feeling of ramming into a loved one’s car at top speed and sending them flying. It’d be a great, one-of-a-kind attraction on a cruise ship.
Royal Caribbean evolves the concept
Experienced riders (i.e., those born before the year 1990) will remember the smell of burnt metal in the air and the sound of metal dragging when they first rode. The first bumper cars used an “over head system,” where poles on each car would touch a metal mesh ceiling above to provide power. As the cars drove around, sparks would fly as dust would oxidize.
Then, bumper cars evolved with a new system for power called a “Floor Pick-Up (FPU).” First patented in 1974, this system got the power directly from the floor. It got rid of the poles and the need to have a fully powered ceiling across the whole arena. It also provided a much quieter experience since there was no metal dragging across the ceiling.
Neither of these solutions would work well on a cruise ship though. Both options required a large amount of space with a powered floor (or ceiling) that would only be able to be used by bumper cars. So when Royal Caribbean went to add this attraction to a cruise ship, they went with another method, battery-power.
With battery-powered cars, there was no need to run high voltage systems across the floor or ceiling. They could also easily store the cars away when not in use so the space could be utilized for activities like basketball and roller skating. The one downside is that the cars have to charge. That’s why when you’re on a Royal Caribbean ship, you’ll notice the bumper car times are limited to 2 hours and always spread out. This spacing is because the cars need time to charge between sessions.
How to sign up for bumper cars?
Riding the bumper cars on a Royal Caribbean ship is easy. You don’t need to book ahead of time or reserve weeks in advance. Instead, you just show up during the bumper car time on the ship. You’ll find the schedule in your Cruise Compass or in the Royal Caribbean app.
Arrive early as the line can get along, especially on the first day at sea. For a frame of reference, if the line is wrapped around the entire Seaplex, the wait will be about 45 minutes.
Riding the bumper cars on Royal Caribbean
Sessions typically run for 2 hours and happen a couple of times a day. Each round lasts approximately 2.5 minutes. Riders can either go alone or ride with one other person.
The crowd is usually a mixture of kids with parents, teenagers, and adults who just want to have fun. Riders must be at least 5 years old and 42 inches tall to ride with a guardian or 8 years and 48 inches tall to ride by themselves.
How much does it cost to ride Royal Caribbean’s bumper cars?
There is no additional cost to ride bumper cars on a Royal Caribbean ship; it’s included in the cost of the cruise.
Which Royal Caribbean ships have bumper cars?
Bumper cars are a signature feature of Quantum and Quantum Ultra class ships.
You can try them yourself on the following ships:

Bumper cars on cruise ship: From Fairgrounds to Royal Caribbean’s Ocean Adventures
Ah, bumper cars. Those fun, electric cars from our childhood trips to the amusement park, also known as “The Dodgems.” They were simple: just cars, electricity, and a mission to bump into friends and family, all in good fun. The thrill of the chase, the laughter, the electric zaps, and that unique smell of excitement in the air made those times unforgettable.

This ship splits its year between Alaska from Seattle and Australia from Brisbane. It sails to places like the South Pacific, New Zealand, and North Queensland. If you’re up for an adventure, Quantum’s your ship.
Anthem of the Seas bumper cars
Anthem of the Seas came next in April 2015, as grand as its sister but with its own touch. From Cape Liberty, New Jersey, it heads to the Bahamas for 7 days or the Southern Caribbean for 11. Then, it’s off to Southampton, UK, for trips around the British Isles, Norwegian Fjords, and the Mediterranean. Later, it plans to swing by Singapore and circle back to Seattle by May 2025. Anthem knows how to roam.
Ovation of the seas bumper cars: The Last of Its Kind
April 2016 gave us Ovation of the Seas, the grand finale of the original Quantum class. Parked in sunny Sydney, Australia, it’s your gateway to Alaska’s wonders and summer down south. For those chasing the sun, Ovation offers the best of both worlds.
Spectrum of the Seas: Starting Fresh

This might lead you to question whether bumper cars are included among its onboard attractions. Unfortunately, the response is negative.
Despite the popularity of this feature, Royal Caribbean has decided not to extend this particular innovation to “Icon of the Seas,” making it absent since the latest Quantum Ultra class vessels.
Nonetheless, “Icon of the Seas” offers a plethora of other activities, ensuring no shortage of entertainment and fun.

By: Author Patrick Davis
Posted on Published: March 18, 2023
When taking a cruise with Royal Caribbean , you can expect an almost endless list of fun activities, dining options, and entertainment to experience.
While each ship has its own slate of activities for kids and adults to enjoy, there is no doubt that there will be something for everyone. Some of these activities include surf simulators, water parks, rock climbing walls, and even skydiving simulators.
If you have a little (or big!) sailor at home that is obsessed with bumper cars, then Royal Caribbean can make their dreams come true. In this article, we will discuss which Royal Caribbean ship has bumper cars plus other activities and entertainment you can find onboard
Royal Caribbean Ships That Have Bumper Cars
Taking your family on a Royal Caribbean cruise is something your kids will never forget. Not only is it a whole new experience, but you will never hear them say, “I’m bored.” As a parent, this means you can sit back and relax while the kids play or join in on the fun.
As mentioned, there are so many activities that your kids may not have time to try them all. However, for kids that are set on riding bumper cars on the cruise, here are the Royal Caribbean ships that will provide them with some amazing memories:
Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas
Anthem of the Seas is a thrill seekers’ paradise. Kids and adults can enjoy some of the top activities, including the Ripcord skydiving simulator, Guinness Book of World Records North Star, and bumper cars at the biggest indoor activity center ever to set sail.
If that’s not enough, families can play sports, go to the arcade, try out the surf simulator, go up the rock climbing wall, and more. In addition, there are kid and teen programs for educational purposes while the parents take a break at the lounge or bar.
This vessel sails from the southern part of the Caribbean , Spain , Portugal , and the Canary Islands .
Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas
The Odyssey of the Seas sets sail from Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and unlocks an unforgettable adventure across the eastern, western, and southern Caribbean. The vessel will sail through destinations such as Jamaica and Aruba. It will also take a stop CocoCay, which is home to the world’s tallest waterslide.
With similar activities to the Anthem of the Seas, there is something for everyone. In addition, families can battle in a game of glow-in-the-dark laser tag or immerse themselves in a 4D virtual reality experience.
Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas
Offering Alaska , Hawaii , and South Pacific cruises, the Ovation of the Seas has diverse landscapes and destinations for families to explore.
This ship has the same activities as Anthem of the Seas, so while kids are on the bumper cars, adults can check out the robotic bartenders at the Bionic Bar.
Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas
Quantum of the Seas has cruises leaving from Seattle and Brisbane, Australia ports that sail through Alaska and the South Pacific. You can expect the same activities as the vessels mentioned above, including bumper cars, surf simulator, Ripcord skydive simulator, and more.
Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas
Explore the wonders of Asia by setting sail on the Spectrum of the Seas . On this cruise, passengers can choose to explore the historic wonders of Singapore, the wonders of Malaysia, or the iconic limestone cliffs and crystal clear waters of Thailand.
Families can expect bumper cars and other familiar activities and entertainment, as well as unique experiences such as a Sky Pad virtual reality trampoline.
Are Bumper Cars Free on Royal Caribbean?
Now that you know which Royal Caribbean ship has bumper cars, you may be wondering if they are free to enjoy. The good news is that the bumper cars and other activities at SeaPlex are included in your cruise fare.
In addition, other activities and entertainment are included. However, there are some things that aren’t included on a Royal Caribbean cruise . For example, shore excursions will be an extra charge. You can save money by going through a third-party vendor at the port, as you may pay extra by going through the cruise line.
Other extra costs to be aware of include but are not limited to alcohol, spa treatments, fitness classes, specialty restaurants, and Zone Zero virtual reality on Odyssey of the Seas. Since alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks add up, we recommend purchasing a drink package before boarding the ship.
How Old Do You Have to Be to Ride the Bumper Cars on Royal Caribbean Ships?
For safety reasons, children need to meet a certain age and height requirement to ride bumper cars on Royal Caribbean ships. Children must be at least five years old and 107 cm (42 inches) tall to ride with a guardian. In order to drive alone, kids need to be at least eight years and 122 cm (48 inches) tall.
Are Royal Caribbean Cruises All-Inclusive?
Like many ocean cruises, Royal Caribbean does not have all-inclusive fares. Instead, you have two options; you can either buy a food and drink package or pay as you go.
For drinks, there are different packages to choose from, including the water package, classic soda package, refreshments package, and deluxe package. The deluxe package is the only one that includes alcohol .
Like the drink packages, passengers can choose from the 3 Restaurant Package, 4 Restaurant Package, 5 Restaurant Package, and Unlimited Dining Package. There are complimentary restaurants that are included in the fare, but getting a food package gives you more food options.
If you want to learn more about the food and drink packages and what’s included, be sure to read our article here.

New cruise ship will have everything, including bumper cars
Share story.
NEW YORK — Royal Caribbean cruise line dazzled cruise aficionados Tuesday with details of its forthcoming Quantum of the Seas ship, which will be the first at sea to offer attractions like bumper cars, simulated skydiving and an observation capsule called The North Star, with a bird’s-eye view 300 feet above the water.
“Without a doubt, Quantum of the Seas is a game changer with technological innovations never imagined aboard a cruise ship,” said Stewart Chiron, who writes at CruiseGuy.com.
“I can’t wait to get on it,” said Barbara Lippincott, who’s taken 160 cruises on Royal Caribbean and was among a number of the company’s devotees at a Manhattan event unveiling the ship’s features.
Richard Butz, a Pennsylvania-based travel agent with Cruise One, said he’ll have no trouble selling trips on Quantum. “Royal Caribbean comes up with things nobody ever thinks of,” he said.

Royal Caribbean executives said The North Star was inspired by the London Eye. The capsule can hold 14 people and is attached to a crane-like arm.
The skydiving attraction, called RipCord, uses a powerful wind flow to keep participants aloft while floating and spinning over an outdoor deck. “You’re not touching anything but the air,” said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International.
An indoor complex called SeaPlex will host basketball, table tennis, trapeze instruction and bumper cars. The space converts to a dance floor for roller-skaters, with a DJ hovering above in a see-through pod. Another space, Two70, has a 270-degree panoramic view and will host aerialists and other performances.
Cabins have modular features like interior doors so that adjacent bedrooms can be connected for large families or multigenerational groups.
Not everything on Quantum is new to the industry. Norwegian’s Epic ship introduced rooms designed for solo travelers, which Quantum will also have. Disney’s Dream and Fantasy ships have “virtual portholes” for windowless staterooms offering live views of the sea, and all of Quantum’s interior cabins will also have “virtual balconies” consisting of LED screens with projected ocean views.
Tickets for Quantum’s first sailing will go on sale to the public June 4, with Royal Caribbean regular cruisers getting an early shot at tickets starting May 27. Prices were not announced but cruise lines typically charge more for new ships than for other cruises. Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., said there would be no extra fees for many of the ship’s attractions, including The North Star and skydiving.
Royal Caribbean also owns the largest cruise ships in the world, the Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas, which carry more than 6,000 people apiece. Quantum will carry 4,180 passengers.
Bumper cars on a cruise ship? This one has them
ABOARD THE QUANTUM OF THE SEAS -- Bumper cars on a cruise ship?
If it sounds a bit wacky, it is. But passengers this week on the maiden voyage of Royal Caribbean's new Quantum of the Seas -- the first cruise ship with a bumper cars pavilion -- are declaring the concept a hit.
"It's really fun," says Victor Wong, 69, of Vancouver, pausing to talk in between rides at the new venue. "You can get whacked pretty good."
Wong's 67-year-old wife, Jenny, isn't so sure. "Somebody bumped me hard, and it was scary," she says. "Whether it was on purpose or not I don't know."
The Wongs were among dozens of passengers lining up Monday night to be among the first to try the new bumper cars, which are located at a multi-use space on Quantum called the SeaPlex. A cruise ship first, the SeaPlex is a cavernous indoor activity area at the top of the vessel that can be converted to be used for bumper cars, roller skating, basketball and even trapeze lessons.
The two-level-high SeaPlex also has upstairs nooks for playing Xbox, ping pong and foosball. The space also has what's billed as the first food truck at sea, an outlet called the SeaPlex Dog House that serves up hot dogs, bratwurst and sausages.
Known for the biggest mega-resorts at sea, Royal Caribbean long has been a pioneer in rolling out unusual attractions on its vessels, and the SeaPlex is just one of several new-for-a-ship features on Quantum. The ship also boasts such innovations as a bar with robot bartenders and a glass capsule on a mechanical arm that takes passengers into the sky for bird's-eye views.
At 168,666 tons, Quantum is the third largest cruise ship ever built, boasting 16 public decks and room for nearly 5,000 passengers. Only Royal Caribbean's 225,282-ton Oasis of the Seas and sister Allure of the Seas are bigger.
USA TODAY Cruise is reporting live all week from Quantum's maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, which began Sunday. Click on the carousel below for our 'first look' photo tour of the vessel. What is Included in a Royal Caribbean Cruise?
R oyal Caribbean Cruise Line is known for its enormous cruise ships, filled with exciting amenities like zip lines, FlowRider surf simulators, bumper cars, and observation pods. When you are planning a Royal Caribbean cruise, you may wonder what is included in your cruise fare. It can be confusing to figure things out, especially when you are faced with a menu list of “add-ons” that you can purchase.
This post will help you figure out what’s included in a Royal Caribbean cruise, and what you may need to purchase separately. Keep in mind that the ships and itineraries vary, so you’ll want to get complete details for your specific sailing.
Disclosure: I’ve sailed on Royal Caribbean at no cost for several media trips and have also paid my own way. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no cost to you. All opinions are my own.

Items that Are Included in Your Royal Caribbean Cruise
Your stateroom.
When you purchase your cruise fare, the biggest difference you’ll see in price is in the type of stateroom that you select. There are lots of different options, including interior staterooms, balcony staterooms, and suites .
I typically recommend getting a balcony if you can, because you are likely to use it. It’s always so nice to spend time on the balcony, reading a book, or just watching the waves.
On Royal Caribbean, the Oasis-Class ships (like the Wonder of the Seas and Allure of the Seas ) have another type of balcony. These balconies don’t face the ocean but instead face either the balcony or Central Park.
Suites come with a whole selection of benefits, including a concierge, separate boarding lines, WiFi, access to the concierge lounge, larger and more deluxe staterooms, and the option to dine at Coastal Kitchen. They are more expensive but can be a great experience.
Interior cabins are typically the cheapest. They can be a good deal, but only book an interior stateroom if you know you won’t want/need the balcony.
Depending on how booked your cruise is, you may receive a “RoyalUp” offer. With this, you’ll have the opportunity to bid for a stateroom upgrade. It’s totally optional and there’s no guarantee you’ll win the upgrade. If you do win, you are automatically upgraded.
We bid and won a RoyalUp bid on our sailing on the Odyssey of the Seas. We were able to get a suite and had concierge access, for less money than we would have paid had we booked it initially. If having a suite is important to you, however, it’s best to just book it in advance.
Included Dining on Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean has some delicious food, and much of it is included in your cruise price. Complimentary dining options include the main dining room, as well as some other dining venues. These complimentary restaurants may include (and vary by ship):
- Cafe Promenade
- Sorrento’s Pizza
- El Loco Fresh
- The Dog House
- Windjammer Buffet
- Solarium Bistro
- Coastal Kitchen (for concierge/suite guests)
- Dining locations at Labadee and CocoCay
- Room service (with an additional charge for service)
Unless you have a drinks package, you’ll pay for alcoholic beverages, as well as premium coffee. Ice water (but not bottled water), non-pressed fruit juices, iced tea, hot tea, lemonade, and brewed coffee are included.
When booking your cruise, you’ll be able to choose a dining time for the main dining room. There’s also the option of My Time dining, which lets you have a more flexible dinner time at no extra charge.
Entertainment and Activities Included on Royal Caribbean
Entertainment and activities on Royal Caribbean ships are top-notch, and most of it is included in your cruise fare. This includes Broadway-style shows, game shows, ice shows, water shows, comedians, live music, karaoke, trivia, and more. You may need to reserve your spot in advance, but generally these are complimentary.
While there’s always a lot going on when on a Royal Caribbean cruise, I definitely recommend that you take advantage of the shows (especially the ice shows, water shows, and Broadway-style shows). These shows are among the best I’ve seen.
There are also lots of onboard activities that are included on Royal Caribbean. Like everything else, these vary by ship. But some things that you should expect to see include pools, hot tubs, water slides, fitness center, bumper cars, the North Star observation pod, mini golf, surf simulators, zip lines, ice skating, rock climbing wall, tennis/pickleball courts, and ping pong. You definitely won’t be bored.
Traveling with kids? Royal Caribbean also offers kids’ clubs. The Adventure Ocean youth programs are available for ages 3 to 12 (with three different groups divided by age). There are also tween and teen programs. These are a great way for kids to meet other kids on board, and for parents to have some quiet time.
Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee
If you are visiting Perfect Day at CocoCay or Labadee (in Haiti), you may wonder what is included. These private destinations do have some special offerings that you’ll pay extra for, but you don’t need to pay just to visit.
If you want to just walk off the ship and go to the beach, you’ll have lots of included options. You’ll also be able to have your lunch at the various locations. If you have a beverage package, you can use it at both of these destinations.
You are also to purchase add-ons for your day at these private destinations for an extra fee. Options include the water park and private beach club at CocoCay, cabanas, shore excursions, and more.
What’s Not Included on Your Royal Caribbean Cruise
Vitality spa on royal caribbean.
If you are looking for some relaxation on your cruise vacation, be sure to spend some time at the Vitality Spa onboard Royal Caribbean ships. Spa treatments are available for an additional fee. There’s also a fitness center located within the spa, and this is (for the most part) complimentary for cruisers.
WiFi on Royal Caribbean
Of all the cruise ships I’ve been on, I’ve found the WiFi signal on Royal Caribbean ships to be the most reliable. WiFi on Royal Caribbean is affordable, but it is offered at an additional price. Some cruisers, like concierge guests, do receive it for free, however.
Alcoholic Beverages
Like all cruise ships, alcoholic beverages on Royal Caribbean are offered at an extra cost, even in complimentary dining venues like the main dining room. There are ways to decrease the cost, however, like purchasing a drinks package – including a premium drinks package and the classic soda package.
If you are considering adding a drinks package to your sailing, you’ll want to do some math to figure out if it’s worthwhile. Cruisers who only have a drink or two per day may find it more worthwhile to just purchase drinks on an a la carte basis.
Pressed juice (where available, in the spa), and specialty coffees are offered for an additional cost.
The Royal Caribbean ships have large casinos on board, with plenty of tables and slot machines. If you choose to go to the casino, you’ll pay extra.
Specialty Dining
Royal Caribbean offers some phenomenal specialty restaurants, including Izumi, Wonderland, Chops Grille, Giovannis, and the Mason Jar (offerings vary by ship). These restaurants do have an extra cost.
There are different ways that you can pay for these experiences. There’s always the option to purchase each one individually. Or, there are add-ons where you can buy a package of specialty restaurants or even unlimited dining. These are a great way to save some money if you are planning on eating at several different specialty restaurants during your Royal Caribbean cruise.
The Royal Caribbean ships offer an arcade onboard, with all of the most popular video games. You’ll pay extra, by game, if you visit the arcade.
With all of these inclusions and add-ons, you’ll want to make sure you factor everything into the price of your cruise. Many of these add-ons can be purchased in advance, and you’ll often save some money by doing that, rather than purchasing when you are on board.
