If you’re looking for a reliable bike to get you and your possessions around then Cube’s Travel SL sure takes some beating.

The Travel SL is great to ride, can be loaded like a mule and has proven to be utterly reliable. It arrives with everything a serious commuter requires to clock up serious miles and — thanks to some clever spec choices — requires an exceptionally low amount of maintenance.

Cube Travel SL frame and kit

The no frills aluminium frameset of the Cube places its rider upright and with a very clear view of the road ahead. Its stealthy black paint finish is tough and prevents unnecessary attention, for when the bike is parked in town centres.

It already arrives loaded with everything a serious commuter bike should have, including a decent rear rack, full-length mudguards and LED lights powered by a bike dynamo at the front wheel. Despite all of that kit, this bike weighs only 13.8kg for a 58cm model.

Regularly cleaning and lubricating a drivetrain is a first world problem at best, but it’s one you can forego with this Cube thanks to the Gates Belt Drive transmission.

Compared to a chain, it’s a clean and quiet way to feed motion to the Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub gear.

The Shimano M315 hydraulic disc brakes fitted to this model are hard to fault with plenty of control and power whatever the weather (and two heavily loaded panniers in place).

Cube Travel SL ride impressions

For a bike of this kind, the Cube is entertaining to ride and its relative lack of weight means it feels surprisingly spritely too.

The frame and fork are particularly stiff, so if you’re travelling without additional weight then you’ll probably want to take the tyres down to their minimum pressure. In my experience that’s perfectly fine to do thanks to the excellent puncture resistance of Schwalbe’s Marathon Supreme tyres .

Compared to a regular chain, the Gates belt does leave a feel of slight elasticity under foot. Combine this with the sometimes clunky nature of the Alfine hub gear and you’ve got a transmission that takes some getting used to. I thought the gear range offered from its eight ratios suited the bike well.

I did have to re-tension the drive belt every few hundred miles after it began to slip under high torque situations. Similarly, the shifter for the Shimano Alfine hub gear required frequent tension adjustments to optimise shift quality.

Both of these jobs will be no problem for most home mechanics and actually formed the only routine maintenance this bike required over many hundreds of miles.

The SKS mudguards did a brilliant job of keeping me dry but were sometimes prone to annoying vibration, which is something made significantly more noticeable on a bike as quiet as this one.

The dynamo lights aren’t going to win any records for their output, but they do a decent job considering their size and they hold power for long enough to keep you illuminated while paused at red lights. Still, anyone riding at night should only use these alongside more powerful lights, in my opinion.

The Travel SL is ready to reliably take you wherever you desire and it's not often that bikes arrive this sorted out of the box. That means it's also top value. In fact, this bike is so good that you’ll probably take it for granted, I know I did.

Hybrid e-bikes average price

If you want an acceptable Hybrid e-bike you should know that the average price is 2480 $ . However, this doesn’t mean that if you spend less money on a Hybrid e-bike, you couldn’t get a decent one. As a general rule of thumb, you should always read reviews about the e-bike and its components before buying it to ensure you don’t pay too much.

Average weight for Hybrid e-bikes

On a deeper look, we notice that the average weight of a Hybrid e-bike is 23.79 kg (52.45 lbs) . It is a good advantage to have a lighter bike than the average. However, a heavier bike is more efficient on descents.

Travel hybrid Pro 500 weighs 25.8 kg (56.88 lbs) and is a bit heavier than the average. In other words, this model is 8.45% heavier than the average Hybrid e-bike.

Overview of components

The SunTour NCX is included from the factory. It has a travel distance of mm . Bike forks are great for shock absorption and provide you with a smooth ride. In short, you should always ensure you have a good fork when purchasing a bike.

Wheels size

As for the wheels, CUBE Travel hybrid Pro 500 2016, has a 700c aluminum model. There is no doubt, that 700c wheels are very popular on all road bike models. However, while they give you great speed and control, these wheels are not so bump-friendly.

When you want to stop the bike in time, the brakes are vital. The Travel hybrid Pro 500 has Hydraulic Rim brakes. They are a bit expensive, and don’t deliver such a great performance. In short, you can look for a bike with disk or hydraulic disk brakes.

CUBE Travel hybrid Pro 500 2016 is available in one size only. In conclusion, make sure it fits you, or look for another model.

Cube 2016 Lineup

Cube presented its new lineup for 2016, with some really interesting updates to the Stereo 120 trailbike, and the Stereo 160 – the enduro weapon of choice for the Cube Action Team, fronted by Nico Lau. Let’s start with the latter.

The Stereo 160 is available in HPA (aluminum) and HPC (carbon), and features 160mm of front and rear travel. The aluminum models have a range of prices ranging from 2,700 to 3,700 euros, while those in carbon ( C62 or C68 ) will run between 4000 and 6500 Euros.

Compared to 2015 Cube have changed the geometry, added Boost 148 to the rear hub, updated the cable management, and added few details that you can see in the picture below. Not shown is the attachment point for the detachable battery of a Shimano Di2 system.

Even the Stereo 120 will be available in both carbon & aluminum versions, with prices that will range from 2,200 to 2,700 euro for the AL and from 3200 to 4000 for carbon. Note the internal cable routing and the varying even/odd frame sizes depending on the wheel size. In fact, the 16″, 18″ and 20″ will be available in 27.5″, while the 19″, 21″ and 23″ only as 29 inches.

Women’s model sizes 14″ and 16″ will run on 27.5″ wheels and 17″ and 19″ models will come with 29″ wheels.

Here is the updated geometry and some new details that you’ll find in the pictures below.

The intermediate model – the Stereo 140. Following the trend of the other two bikes has also been updated with a new geometry set. It will be available only as a 29-inch carbon, with two different versions: the lower cost C62 and the top of the line C68. The price range varies from 4500 to 6500 Euro. At 140mm, it’s clearly an all-mountain bike.

Moving on to DH, here’s the Two15 HPA 27.5″. Aluminum DH frame with prices from 4500 to 6500 euro.

Apparently, Cube will present a 27.5 Plus bike with 150mm of front and rear travel at Eurobike.

Cube’s Elite hardtail lineup remains unchanged, as it was completely revamped in the past year.

Our Travel means you can ride anywhere in style. We've given our master of versatility a lightweight, comfortable frame based around 29er wheels, whilst keeping everything that made earlier versions of this touring bike so popular. The result? It may surprise you - it'll make the trip to the coffee shop more fun and allow you to take on more adventurous long rides at the weekends. Comfort and safety were near the top of the list when we developed this bike and, in order to make every mile more fun, we built in plenty of frame clearance for extra wide tyres. The Travel is your gateway to cycling freedom!

AUSSTATTUNG

Frame: We used a compact geometry for this light, stiff aluminium frame - and selected double butted tubes. The result is a sporty and efficient ride position that'll translate your pedalling into effortless forward progress. The head and seat tube junctions were joined with our Smooth Welding technology for a clean appearance. State-of-the-art technology includes a tapered head tube, and we ensured that the rigid aluminium fork is stiff enough to remain stable even when loaded with luggage. The 3D forged dropout makes fitting disc brakes and a CUBE kickstand simple and we've provided bottle cage bosses on the seat tube and down tube - perfect for long rides. And, just like all its stablemates, the Travel has passed our stringent CUBE test standards.
