The Treasures of Cyprus Tour

The Treasures of Cyprus

Cyprus is an amazing country and I was glad I was able to visit it. Booking the tour through Tourradar was quite easy and even though I had not heard of Cyprus Incoming Tour before, I booked this tour because of Tourradar. Overall, the tour was good and our group had 8 people with half of them from Spain. So, the tour guide, George, explained everything in both Spanish and English. I was impressed with all the sites, especially the occupied Northern Cyprus, which was eye-opening to see the tension and see all the occupying forces. I gave the tour 4 stars instead of 5 stars because there were a few issues, which could be improved in future offerings of this tour. First, another tour member and I who booked this tour through Tourradar were booked for only 5 nights at the Best Western Plus hotel in Laranaca even though the tour itinerary clearly said the tour included 7 night hotel accommodation. When I checked in at the hotel, the hotel reception staff said the reservation was only for 5 nights and didn't know what would happen for the remaining 2 nights. I messaged Cyprus Incoming through Tourradar and they promptly acknowledged the mistake, and said they would resolve it. I didn't know Cyprus Incoming had subcontracted the tour to another company called OLTA Travel, which had to correct the issue. In the meantime, when I checked with the hotel staff 2 days later, one of the staff at the front desk was very abrupt and said the reservation was only for 5 nights and there were no rooms available for the remaining 2 nights. This caused a lot of anxiety and concern, but eventually the hotel accommodation was extended for 7 nights. There were 2 other members of the tour group, who were booked in another hotel 25 kms away, which delayed the tour each day by half hour or more as the tour bus had to pick them up first and then drive to our hotel. So, the hotel accommodation issue must be resolved in future tours, and those who book the tours must be clearly informed that Cyprus Incoming organizes the tour through OLTA Travel. Best Western Plus is a good hotel but its location in the middle of a residential area instead of near the city center was not ideal. One had to walk at least 15 to 20 minutes to get to the city center. Second, the tour guide George was good but if he emails or uses Whatsapp as other tour companies do to inform the tour group what the next day's itinerary would be, what to bring, what to wear (as some in the group couldn't enter a famous mosque because they were wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts), lunch is included or not, approximately at what time we would return back to the hotel, etc., it would be very helpful. Some tour group members get nauseated on long bus rides and so including information on how long the ride before a stop would be very helpful. Also, a brief overview of the country on the first day will help the group orient itself to the tour better. Third, if the lunch duration is shortened and the time is used for seeing more sites, it would be great as some of us may not return again to the same country to see one or two important places. I really wanted to see the mosaics in Paphos but we didn't as we spent nearly 2 hours at lunch. Fourth, we had a leisure day but there were no recommendations on what we could see on our own, how to get the transportation, etc. It would have been nice to be given a list of options not covered by the tour itinerary. Overall, the tour was good and Cyprus is a wonderful country to visit. It has a lot of history, interesting sites to visit, beautiful beaches to enjoy, and if the mentioned issues could be addressed, this tour would be excellent.

Aphrodite's Tour

Great hotel with half boarding, good guide, good itinerary, good transportation, the services related with the tour were well delivered. Over all we had good experiences, and we felt the tour was a good value. The only complain we had is the communication on line with the Cyprus destination tour company before the tour. It was not clear where to find the downloaded information, our repeated questions were often not answered, such as the name and the location of our first night hotel. Nobody ever informed us about the half boarding with our hotel that caused us missing two dinners at the hotel.

Hello, Tour guides were great. You need to communicate more with travellers especially around holidays. Due to Christmas, you changed the itinerary to have 3 days free time Dec 24-26 and I only found out because I asked on Dec 23. This should have been published on your website in advance. If I had known in advance, I would have made a different plan. I was the only person on the tour so contacting me would be easy. I also think 1 activity of wine tasting in Larnaca did not happen. Have a great day.

Kyreniam, known for its cobblestoned old town and horseshoe-shaped harbor at dusk, northern Cyprus

Welcome to the best-kept secret of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Not all that long ago, Cyprus was a place you’d think twice before travelling to. But although this island country remains divided after a military coup in 1974, the beauty of the land and the hospitality of the people stand unfettered as the country edges towards unification. The south is well-established in tourism, but the Turkish -controlled northern part combines adventure, local interaction, history and cultural immersion with an understated flair rarely found elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Join us, on our way to stunning mountains and beaches, as we strike up a conversation with the locals over a sip of fiery zivania .

Learn more about Cyprus

Local culture of cyprus.

Cypriots are generally known for their warmly hospitable quality, and the high value they place on family. There are really two kinds of Cypriots though: Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, since Cyprus is divided in two. Greek Cypriots are the Greek-speaking Greek Orthodox community; they occupy the south. Turkish Cypriots are the Turkish-speaking Muslim community, who occupy the northern part of the country (roughly a third of it).

Before the 1974 military coup and the subsequent split of the island, the two groups were largely mixed. Their cultures were more intertwined. Nowadays, however, with the island formally divided, there is more of a cultural divide. There are still many signs of cultural harmony, though. One need only look at the Home for Cooperation, a community centre and NGO hub located in the Green Line (the UN Buffer Zone between north and south) to see signs of hope for unification. Indeed the reopening of border points in 2003, allowing domestic travel between north and south, was a step forward.

While southern Cyprus has seen rapid tourism growth and environmental degradation, tourism in the north is growing at a much slower rate. The Republic of Northern Cyprus (formally recognised only by Turkey) is characterised by a Turkish–Cypriot dialect, warm hospitality and friendliness, and Islam (though its practice is not as overt as in many other Muslim countries). The culture of northern Cyprus is strongly influenced by Turkey, but Turkish Cypriots consider themselves Cypriot first and foremost.

Geography & environment

Located in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus is an island that lies west off the coast of Lebanon and Syria, north of Israel and Egypt, and south of Turkey. At 9,250 square kilometres in size, it’s relatively small. Cyprus is essentially split in two: the northern part of the country (roughly one-third of the land mass) is controlled by Turkey, and has been ever since the coup of 1974. The lower two-thirds of the country is occupied by Greek Cypriots.

Northern Cyprus boasts a diverse and scenic land mass of beaches, mountains and sweeping plains. The Kyrenia Range is a major geographic feature of the north, and its highest peak is Mt Selvili (1,023 m). East of this mountain range, there is a peninsula called Karpas, where the quiet town of Rizokarpaso and various beaches are found. The holiday towns of Kyrenia and Famagusta lie in the north and east of the main land mass, respectively.

Shopping guide to Cyprus

Cyprus is a fantastic place to shop for locally produced items, from handcrafted textiles to fresh fruit and vegetables. Perhaps the most tempting souvenir in Cyprus is a kilim – an Ottoman style rug woven by hand. There’s also some wonderful Turkish pottery, silk, scarves and tiles to be found.

Lefkara embroidery is a uniquely Cypriot item, originating in the village of the same name in the south; northern versions of Lefkara embroidery have a slightly different aesthetic. North Nicosia is a great place to shop for handmade lace like this, as well as baskets which are handmade in island’s more remote villages. Often rugs and baskets are not cheap, and it pays to shop around a little before you buy.

Thanks to the strength of Cypriot farming communities, market-fresh local produce is never too far away in Cyprus. Start with Nicosia’s markets – both the ‘open’ and ‘closed’ markets are worth a good stroll around, and great for local interaction.

Cyprus festival calendar

The Cypriots are a festive bunch, which shows in their jam-packed calendar. The Limassol Carnival is a major event in the south – it’s one of the best-known carnivals in Europe. In the north of Cyprus, food is a major theme of the festival calendar, with an event to celebrate just about any Cypriot food imaginable: the orange, grape, lemon, date, tulip and walnut, just to name a few. Famagusta, meanwhile, has a reputation for regular music festivals.

North Cyprus Olive Festival, Kyrenia (October)

It started in 2001 and before too long grew to attract visiting artists from many neighbouring countries. Olives are certainly not the only focus; dance performances, market stalls and seminars have all been known to feature in this multi-day affair.

International Famagusta Art & Culture Festival (June/July)

Spanning hip hop, reggae, pop and classical, this 20+ year-old event has steadily grown into one of the most significant music festivals of the Mediterranean. With a strong world music bent, it’s a great place to experience just how much more there is to the region than sun, surf and sand.

Eco Festival, Buyyokonuk (October)

For many years the village of Buyokkonuk has been a bastion of sustainable tourism and all things local, and this late-summer festival is a place to taste Cypriot food done the slow, proper way. While the cuisine is the main focus, music and market stalls feature among the festivities.

Food and drink in Cyprus

The cuisine of Turkish Cypriots comes from Mediterranean, Southern European and Middle Eastern influences. The beauty of eating in Northern Cyprus is that ingredients tend to be local, as food production is more agrarian in the north than in the south.

Must-try food and drink in Cyprus

Meze is a major pillar of Cypriot food culture, in the same way tapas is to the Spaniards. It’s the share-plate style of eating, the perfect accompaniment to a few drinks with friends. Meze dishes might include hummus, beetroot, yoghurt, grilled halloumi, spicy pastourma (cured sausage), koupepia or dolma (stuffed vine leaves) … the list goes on.

2. Halloumi

Is it Greek, or is it Turkish? No matter where you stand on the debate on its origins, this rich brined cheese is one of the must-eat foods in Cyprus. If it’s grilled (it usually is) it’s best consumed within minutes of it being served, preferably with copious lemon juice.

3. Molihiya

A spinach-like dish often seen in Northern Cyprus, Molihiya is perhaps of Arabic origin. It uses sun-dried Molihiya leaves which have distinct and potent flavour. Garlic, lemon, tomato and chilli are incorporated, and often chicken is too.

4. Cicek dolmasi

Another beloved Turkish-Cypriot dish, these zesty and spicy parcels are squash blossoms (or zucchini flowers) stuffed with a mixture of rice, onions, tomatoes and herbs.

To call it the local ‘firewater’ may be a little harsh – the Cypriot drink of choice certainly has a character of its own, though colourless and sugarless. It’s distilled from grapes but has a subtle raisin aroma, and is as refreshing in the summer (served cold) as it is heart-warming in the winter.

Ayran is a savoury yogurt-based beverage that is mixed with salt and served cold. Though filling, it’s quite refreshing and a great option for those who don’t drink alcohol. To get the full authentic dose, go for one with some dried mint in it.

7. şeftali kebabı

Pronounced Sheftalia Kebab is a traditional Cypriot food. It is a type of sausage without skin, that uses caul fat, or omentum, the membrane that surrounds the stomach of lamb, to wrap the ingredients rather than sausage casing, thus ensuring a very juicy kebab

Is tipping customary in Cyprus?

Tipping is not expected in most situations in Cyprus, but it’s often appreciated. In restaurants, however, tipping is quite common. Servers will often add a 10% service charge to a bill; if they don’t, a similar amount is often expected as a tip.

What is the internet access like in Cyprus?

Reliable internet access is increasingly common in Cyprus, especially in the major towns. Internet cafes tend to be more prevalent in the north. Wi-Fi is free in many hotels and cafes in both the north and south. Internet access will be more scarce in remote and rural areas.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Cyprus?

International roaming is possible in Cyprus in the South.  For European travellers, as of 2017 this will no longer incur a fee. Travelling in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus roaming may not be available and if so it may be expensive, better to check with your provider before travelling. If you’re staying for longer than a few days, inexpensive SIM cards with data are easy to purchase.

What are the toilets like in Cyprus?

Toilets in Cyprus block easily when paper goes into them, hence the separate wastebaskets you’ll see for paper disposal. This is the norm throughout Cyprus.

What will it cost for a…?

The below prices refer to Southern Cyprus. For the cost of items in the north where Turkish currency is used, you can deduct 30%:

  • Snack (souvlaki or felafel wrap) = €3–4
  • Glass of beer = €3–4 (north and south)
  • Lunch in a cafe = €8–12
  • Dinner of meze dishes to share = €15–20

Can I drink the water in Cyprus?

The tap water in the south of Cyprus is fine to drink, but in the north it’s best to stick to filtered (or, when it’s the only option, bottled) water. The high mineral content can upset your stomach if you’re not used to it.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Cyprus?

Most major credit cards are widely accepted in Cyprus. Dinners and Amex may not be accepted.

What is ATM access like in Cyprus?

ATMs are widely available in Cyprus. However, it’s best to carry ample cash with you if you’re travelling to more remote areas in the north.

Is Cyprus a safe destination for LGBTQI-travellers?

Homosexuality is legal in Cyprus, and the country is quite a popular destination among gay travellers. In the north, however, homosexuality was only decriminalised as recently as 2010. LGBTQI travellers should exercise caution when travelling, and be aware that conservative attitudes may still prevail in many areas.

Best things to do in Nicosia Cyprus

Cyprus , Europe , History

Free self-guided walking tour in nicosia cyprus.

Nicosia Cyprus (also known as Lefkosia) is a fascinating walled city with a unique star shape. It is the capital and the largest city on the island of Cyprus and the only divided capital in the world. One of the best ways to get around the walled city and experience it like a local is to explore it on foot. That’s why I have created this fun free self-guided walking tour in Nicosia Cyprus.

5 of the 11 bastions that are a part of the Venetian walls surround the old town area in the southern part of Nicosia Cyprus . The others being in the north on the Turkish side. The walls are still largely intact and are among the best preserved Renaissance fortifications in the Mediterranean and have become a major tourist attraction.

What to do on your Self-guided tour Nicosia

Nicosia Cyprus is a place you should add to your European list especially if you appreciate history, culture, and good food. With interesting things to do, see, and places to eat, it should not be overlooked by its beach resorts as a destination to visit.

Free Self-Guided Nicosia Walking Tour

This free self-guided walking tour of Nicosia Cyprus walled city should take around 5-6 hours to walk. It includes stopping for a break, taking photos, but without going inside any of the paid attractions. The best bit is that you can do this at your own pace and can deviate if something catches your eye.

cyprus tours from nicosia

  • Start – D’Avilla Bastion
  • Finish – Laiki Geitonia
  • Walking Time = Around 5hrs
  • Walking Distance = 4-5 kms depending on which streets you walk

Map of your Self-Guided Nicosia Walking Tour

Walk part of the medieval wall- free.

Start your day walking a section of the Venetian wall (Medieval Wall) between bastions in the southern part of Nicosia. It’s best to walk from D’Avilla Bastion to Podocatoro Bastion roughly 850meters, along Konstantinou Palaiologou street passing Bayraktar Mosque before stopping at the Liberty Monument.

If you are arriving via bus for the day, add on an additional  300meters  (3 mins) walk to  D’Avilla Bastion . It is a nice walk from the central bus station along Konstantinou Palaiologou street, passing the newly built park and garden. It is an easy walk too as it is all on the same road.

Are you heading to Larnaca, while in Cyprus? –   What to do in Larnaca Cyprus

  • There is a great little local place called Constaza Kiosk (oxi), between D’Avilla Bastion and Podocatoro Bastion. If you are wanting local a coffee/bottled water or a quick snack before your walk.

The Liberty Monument (Memorial Park)

When you arrive at Podocatoro Bastion make your way to The Liberty Monument (Memorial Park), located near the Venetian walls 100 meters walk towards Nicosia old aqueduct . You will pass Liberty Monument Garden from above as well as see parts of the Venetian walls (defensive walls) that still exist around the city.

The Liberty Monumen t symbolises the successful Cypriot struggle for independence from Britain 1955-1959. It is a really interesting monument to see and worth a visit on the self-guided walking tour.

The large monument contains several statues representing various things. There is one atop of the structure, watching over another two statues who are pulling chains to open a prison gate, allowing prisoners to escape British rule.

walking Self-guided tour Nicosia Cyprus

Nicosia Old Aqueduct

Only 50-100 meters walk away from The Liberty Monument and on your way to Famagusta Gate is Nicosia old aqueduc t. Built in the 18th century, the ancient Aqueduct is part of the old water supply system of Nicosia and is considered to be the oldest aqueduct in Cyprus.

You don’t need very long here and stop for a few photos before moving on to Famagusta Gate .

Staying in Paphos, how about Fifteen fabulous things to do in Paphos Cyprus

Famagusta Gate – Free

Still, along Konstantinou palaiologou 300meters walk (or a couple of minutes) from Nicosia old aqueduct is the famous Famagusta Gate considered to be the most splendid of all the 3 gates along the Venetian walls Nicosia.

Famagusta Gate is a 16th century Gate that has been restored and was originally a gate in the Nicosia walls. Now it houses the city’s Municipal cultural centre and exhibitions. Unless you are going to an exhibition, you only really 10-15minutes here to take your photos.

  • Right next to the Famagusta Gate is an information point, which is great if you wanting to find your bearings along with the walled city.

Famagusta Gate - Self-guided tour Nicosia

The Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) (Optional)

If you like art and history then the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) , should be next on your self-guided walking tour. You can either walk up Ammochostour St directly opposite the Famagusta Gate or go up Ektoros which is a little further up. Either way, both streets will lead to Ermou Street and are about 260-300 meters walk.

T he Centre of Visual Arts and Research o pened in 2014 and its exhibits trace the modern story of Cyprus. The Centre also houses a unique collection of paintings and artifacts that highlight the island’s multicultural past over the past three centuries.

Stop for a coffee and have a break

There is a small fee to go inside the centre, however, if you don’t want to go in, then it is worth taking a walk around the area and maybe having a short break at one of the cafes. We didn’t go into the centre, instead, we had a coffee and a nice break at the cafe/restaurant apart from T he Centre of Visual Arts and Research

Additional Information

  • Entry Fee – €5- per person (Students & children are free)
  • Located – on Ermou Street
  • Opening Hours – Mon-Sat: 9:30-17:00 Fri: 17:00-20:00 (only by appointment)
  • Closed –  Sunday
  • You have the option to skip this and head straight to Archbishops Palace, which is the next stop (Refer below for walking directions). It might save you between 30mins to 1hr of your time.
  • If you walk to the end of Ermou Street, you will reach the closed border area between Greeks and Turkish.

What to do in Nicosia on a Self-guided tour

Archbishop’s Palace

Next stop on the walking tour is Archbishops Palace, which is  the official residence and office of the archbishop of Cyprus. Even though you will not be able to go into the palace, you can visit the Cyprus Folk Art Museum   Byzantine Museum, and National Struggle Museum. As well as   St John’s Cathedral (I heard it’s really nice inside), which are within the grounds.

To get to Archbishops Place from Ermou, turn right down Pnytagorou to the end of the street for 100meters and then turn right onto Thiseos. From here take your first left 5o meters down Ayiouloannou for another 150meters , where you will reach an intersection and the grounds of the Archbishop’s Place.

Ledra Observatory

After the Archbishop’s palace, head over to Lera Observatory (or also known as Shacolas Tower Museum and Observatory) around 900meters away. Where you will have panoramic views of the whole of Nicosia (Lefkosia) on both the north and south side. This is the best spot to get pictures of the Selimiye Mosque and the Turkish flag across the border. I use Sony mirrorless from their collection to capture the views.

The Lera Observatory is on the 11th floor of the Sharcolas Tower located just off the famous Ledras St. There are interactive maps to identify areas and buildings, a short video/pictures about the history, and a mini souvenir shop. It is only a small fee to go up but it is worth it.

cyprus tours from nicosia

  • Entry Fee – €2.50 per person
  • Located – Right off Lidras Street
  • Opening Hours – Everyday 10:00-17:00

I recommend Καφενείο Αρσινόης (I think the English version is Arsinoe Café) right near Lera Observatory, as there was not a bar/restaurant at the top.

Top things to do in Nicosia Cyprus

Pafos Gate (Holy Cross Catholic Church)

Next up on your self-guided walking tour is Pafos Gate and the Holy Cross Catholic Church. Roughly 600meters walk from Lera Observatory. The gate is only 10m(30ft) from the Turkish Zone and it is here, you can also see the old UN building and get right up close to the Turkish side.

What makes The Holy Cross Catholic Church special is its position on the dividing line of the north /south. The entrance is opened on the south side but the rear door on the north side is sealed.

Top things to do in Nicosia Cyprus

  • Cyprus Museum

200meters walk away from Pafos Gate, just passed Performing arts theatre is The Cyprus Museum. It is the last historical site on the self-guided walking tour. Considered to be one of the best museums in Cyprus and is the oldest and largest archaeological museum in the country.

If there is only one museum that you have time to visit while in Nicosia then I highly recommend the Cyprus Museum. It is one of the most popular things to do in Nicosia. Looking for other museums to visit while in the capital. Here is a great guide of cultural and authentic things to see.

  • Entry fee – €4.50 per person
  • Located – on Museum street
  • Opening Hours – Tue-Fri: 8.00-18:00 Sat: 9.00-17.00 Sun: 10.00-13.00
  • Closed – Mondays
  • If you love architecture then have a quick stop off at the front of the Performing arts theatre, it’s a stunning building.

End your self-guided tour of Nicosia at Laiki Getoria

After The Cyprus Museum walk the 650meters to  L aiki Getoria pedestrian area. Where you can enjoy an abundance of shops cafes and restaurants. It is the last stop on the self-guided walking tour through Nicosia and a great way to finish up. As you can relax and enjoy some of the local food or coffee.

The pedestrian streets have giant coloured sails about them that not only look pretty but protect you from the elements of the weather, especially the hot sun.

There are plenty of great options in regards to food and the best bit is the prices are reasonable. Two places I recommend are Aladdin Lahmajoun   that sold 1.50 souvlaki and Christakis Kebab House

Add on a cultural food tour of Nicosia to your self-guided walk

How about adding on a cultural food tour of Nicosia to your self-guided walk around the old town? This would be a great option especially if you are a big fan of trying local foods. You can try things like shaftalia (grilled sausage), fried halloumi cheese, and souvlaki (grilled meat kebabs).

Stay in the old town of Nicosia to do your Self-guided tour

We stayed at Hostel Xanthis for two nights and had just one full day in Nicosia before, we moved on to Paphos. We don’t usually tend to stay in hostels but it had everything we needed. Plus we could not argue with the price or the position of the hostel.

Hostel Xanthis was situated within the walled city and walking distance to the sites in Nicosia old town and only 10 minutes walk to the central bus station. We had a big room with a comfy bed for the two of us, the room also had USB ports and strong WiFi . The bathroom and kitchen were shared but they were clean and someone waited for us to let us into our room when we arrived late.
