Emerald Isle

Emerald Isle features a small-town atmosphere fitting for a leisurely family beach vacation. Its 12 miles of pristine coastline offers travelers a variety of options for sinking their toes in the sand, including uncrowded beaches with superb conditions for surfing and kiteboarding. Plus, Emerald Isle is home to Bogue Inlet Pier (a prime spot for fishing), multiple championship golf courses and the Salty Pirate Water Park (seasonal), giving travelers plenty of ways to pass the time on and off the sand.

If you're looking for an outdoor escape, head to North Carolina's section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park, which straddles the North Carolina-Tennessee border, is the most visited national park in the country – and for good reason. Here, you'll find stunning waterfalls like 120-foot-tall Mingo Falls and multiple hiking trails, including the Mingus Creek Trail, which takes you past a slave cemetery and other historical sites. What's more, the park features winding roads ideal for scenic drives and photo ops, such as Lakeview Drive and Newfound Gap.

This dynamic North Carolina city has gained acclaim for its vibrant arts scene and microbrew culture, but there's plenty for every type of traveler to explore. Its proximity to the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway makes it a top pick for hikers and nature enthusiasts. History buffs are sure to appreciate taking a self-guided walking tour of downtown's Asheville Urban Trail, which includes stops at 30 sculptures of noteworthy Asheville figures. And the massive, 250-room Biltmore Estate, built by George Vanderbilt in the late 19th century, is a must-see for architecture aficionados and romance lovers .

The barrier islands that form the Outer Banks retain their laid-back feel with locally owned shops and a family-friendly atmosphere. Here, visitors will find inexpensive vacation rentals and sprawling public beaches that are rarely crowded. Those trying to get away from it all can spend their days lounging on the shore or exploring the numerous lighthouses that dot the islands. Meanwhile, travelers looking for more activity can venture to Jockey's Ridge State Park to try sandboarding or hang gliding. Save time for a visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, where the world's first successful airplane flight took place.

Pisgah National Forest features more than 500,000 acres of Blue Ridge Mountains terrain that is perfect for outdoor activities. In its three ranger districts, visitors will find waterfalls, whitewater rivers, lakes and hundreds of miles of hiking, bike and equestrian trails. The Pisgah Ranger District is the section to visit to see the park's waterfalls, while the Appalachian Ranger District offers some of the forest's best mountain vistas and horseback riding. Experienced hikers and rock climbers will want to head to the Grandfather Ranger District to explore the Linville Gorge Wilderness.

For a relaxing getaway, take a ferry from Southport to Bald Head Island. On this slow-paced island, you'll discover 12,000 acres of unspoiled land, including nature preserves and 14 miles of beaches. Popular pastimes here include surfing and boogie boarding at East Beach, climbing up Old Baldy (North Carolina's oldest standing lighthouse) and looking for sea turtles, alligators and birds at Bald Head Island Conservancy. You can also hike, bike and kayak your way around this car-free island.

Visit Carolina Beach to enjoy some old-fashioned fun with every member of the family. One of this easygoing town's highlights is its vintage boardwalk, which features an arcade, an amusement park and ample places to purchase sweets. Plus, the boardwalk hosts seasonal events every summer, such as a music festival on the beach and weekly fireworks shows. For some fun in the sun in a quieter setting, head to Carolina Beach State Park. The park offers top-notch fishing, as well as opportunities to hike past unique flora like Venus' flytrap, a must-do activity.

Sitting just 30 miles north of Winson-Salem, Hanging Rock State Park is one of North Carolina's must-visit travel destinations. Jaw-dropping mountain panoramas, rushing waterfalls and abundant wildlife are just a few of the reasons to schedule a visit. The park also offers a variety of hiking and biking trails ranging from easy to strenuous, along with dedicated pathways for horseback riding. Other top activities in Hanging Rock State Park include fishing, rock climbing, camping, swimming (available seasonally for a fee) and boating.

Hundreds of TV shows and movies have been filmed in Wilmington (think: One Tree Hill and Dawson's Creek), earning this riverfront city its nicknames of "Hollywood East" and "Wilmywood." However, Wilmington is equally well known for its historical attractions and proximity to beautiful beaches. Explore Wilmington's historic district to see historical homes and museums like the Bellamy Mansion Museum, or take a tour of the Battleship North Carolina to get an up-close look at one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. Also save time for a stroll along Wilmington's Riverwalk, a 2-mile-long scenic walkway lined with open-air cafes, art galleries and boutiques.

Sports fans will feel right at home in Charlotte. This buzzing city features the NASCAR Hall of Fame and is where professional sports teams like the NFL's Carolina Panthers and the NBA's Charlotte Hornets play. But Charlotte appeals to travelers with other interests, too. Art and history enthusiasts can spend hours perusing the exhibits at Mint Museum Uptown and the Levine Museum of the New South. Meanwhile, outdoorsy types can take advantage of Freedom Park's trails and sports courts or try more adventurous pursuits like whitewater rafting and zip lining at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

North Carolina's capital city may be known as a center for research and higher education, but it's also an excellent option for an affordable vacation. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the North Carolina Museum of Art offer a variety of complimentary exhibits worth checking out. Additionally, Raleigh features several can't-miss outdoor attractions, including William B. Umstead State Park (with multiple lakes for fishing and canoeing, plus trails for hiking, biking and riding horses) and Pullen Park (a green space that houses one of America's oldest amusement parks). After working up an appetite, refuel at one of the city's top restaurants .

Here’s everything you need to know about exploring the Tar Heel State—when to go, where to stay, what to do, and how to get around.

Why you should visit North Carolina

Vinegary whole-hog barbecue and the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains . Indigenous Cherokee culture and colonial history, plus some of the East Coast’s best beaches along the Outer Banks .

Best time to visit North Carolina  

Spring:   Spring is colorful in North Carolina. Buttercups paint the Blue Ridge yellow by late March, and in May, the peaks are blanketed in ethereal pink mountain laurels. Find other seasonal blooms at the waterside Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island. At Biltmore estate near Asheville, roses and azaleas brighten extensive grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted .

Summer:   On North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the summer months of June through August draw families and groups of friends to rental houses and waterfront hotels. The surf and sand offer swimming, kayaking, fishing, and shoreline walks.  

Autumn:   Explore the mountains from late September to early November when fiery foliage displays and cool temperatures attract hikers and campers. Canopy tours and ziplines are plentiful, offering a thrilling way to see the colors.

Winter: Elevation differences in NC mean weather ranges from mild (average high temperatures on the Outer Banks hover in the 50s) to chilly and, occasionally, snowy in the western peaks, where Beech Mountain and Blowing Rock have ski resorts. Come December, holiday lights sparkle inside the Biltmore and at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Asheville. At NASCAR’s Charlotte Motor Speedway, the car-racing oval hosts a glittering drive-thru display.

Lay of the land  

Cities : Appealing to speed lovers of all sorts, Charlotte offers prime rafting and kayaking at the National Whitewater Center, plus the NASCAR Hall of Fame , with exhibits on car racing. Raleigh , the state capital, is home to storied universities ( Duke , the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ) as well as the North Carolina Museum of Art ,   which has a large collection of work by August Rodin and a jumbo outdoor sculpture garden.  

Mountains:   The Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (which extends into Tennessee) offer up scenic drives and great hiking trails. The Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests also contain hundreds of miles of trails, and the New River —one of the world’s oldest rivers—appeals to kayakers, campers, and anglers.

Coastal plai n:   Bliss out along North Carolina’s 301-mile-long Atlantic coastline, which includes Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks with its unspoiled barrier island beaches. Come summer, beaches like Kitty Hawk and Corolla draw legions of swimmers, surfers, and sunbathers.

Getting in and around North Carolina

By plane : The state’s two largest airports are Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) and Raleigh-Durham International (RDU);   both have connections to major cities across the United States and internationally. The Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) gives easy access to this artsy mountain city.

By car : North Carolina is easily accessible via several major interstates including I-40, I-85, and I-95. Two of the best road trips are the 252-mile section of the Blue Ridge Parkway , with breathtaking views of the Appalachian Mountain s,   and the Outer Banks National Scenic Bywa y . The latter begins in Nags Hea d, then winds along the barrier islands past charming beach towns, storied lighthouses and even on two ferries before ending near Beaufor t .  

By train : Service to North Carolina is available aboard Amtrak’s Crescent (from New York to New Orleans) and Silver Meteor (New York to Miami) among other routes.

By bus:   Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation provides express bus and shuttle service to major cities such as Greensboro , High Poin t , and Winston-Sale m .

In town : Winston-Salem and Asheville both have bus systems, and Raleigh has a bike-share program . Charlotte’s LYNX light rail has 26 stations, a few of which stop near tourist attractions such as Discovery Place Science .  

Know before you go

Cultural history:   This is the ancestral homeland of the Cherokee people, a number of whom still live in the town of Cherokee, where you can visit a traditional crafts center and the Oconaluftee Indian Village .   Here, reenactors recreate a 1760s settlement.  

English settlers arrived in 1587, and North Carolina became one of the first 13 American colonies in 1729. Learn about colonial life at Tyron Palace ,   a circa-1767 brick manse where George Washington once attended a ball. In Winston-Salem, Old Salem is a 18th- to 19th-century Moravian settlement that uses historic interpreters to share narratives from the past.

On the Outer Banks, the Wright Brothers National Monument in Kill Devil Hills pays tribute to the sibling inventors who launched the world’s first flight here in 1903.

Festivals : North Carolina is a southern state, meaning it loves a party. A few of the biggest? The North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, with its down-home blend of agricultural displays, carnival rides, and live music. The Wilmington Azalea Festival , held in April, fetes the blooming bushes with garden tours, a colorful parade, and outdoor concerts. In May, Asheville Beer Week showcases the mountain city’s brewing scene with tastings and other events. One of the state’s biggest annual happenings is May’s Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race that sees revved-up stock cars racing around the Charlotte Motor Speedway.  

Cuisine :   North Carolina wins raves for its pork barbecue, which stars a whole hog that’s been pit-roasted, pulled off the bone, and mixed with a tangy vinegar sauce—it’s best eaten on a sandwich with coleslaw. Other homegrown fare includes Krispy Kreme Donuts and Cheerwine , a cherry-flavored soda made in Salisbury since 1917.

LGBTQ+ : North Carolina ranked 33rd in a 2020 24/7 Wall St. report of the most LGBTQ+-friendly states in the U.S. Despite NC’s relatively conservative politics, cities such as Carrboro , Chapel Hill , and Winston-Salem get high marks on the Human Rights Campaign 2022 Municipal Equality Index scorecard.  

How to visit North Carolina sustainably

Outdoors : Help preserve habitat by keeping on designated trails, roads, or marked spurs. Search out and support sustainable tourism businesses like eco-tours, farm stays, and wildlife refuges. The 113-page NC Guide to Sustainability Resources lists many travel-related businesses that go easy on the environment.

Dining : Look for restaurants that source food from local farmers, which helps to support the nearby economy and reduce waste. Good options? Asheville’s Farmhouse Burger , where you can get a grass-fed-beef patty topped with pimento cheese, a spicy North Carolina spread, and the Lantern Restaurant in Chapel Hill, which puts Southeast Asian spins on homegrown ingredients such as pork and oysters.  

Foraging tours with Asheville’s No Taste Like Home venture into the surrounding countryside in search of edible greens, berries, mushrooms, and flowers.

Lodging:   The state-sponsored NCGreenTravel lists sustainable hotels and ranks them via a clever one-to-three dogwood blossom rating system. Some to investigate include the Solar Farmhouse in Boone County and the Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary with its locavore restaurant and extensive recycling program.

The Last Castle: The Epic Story of Love, Loss, and American Royalty in the Nation’s Largest Home ,   by Denise Kiernan. A juicy historic romp through the construction of Asheville’s Biltmore mansion gives details on the wealthy Vanderbilt clan that built it, as well as the celebs and servants that frequented its grand, Gilded Age halls.

North Carolina is one of the most geographically diverse states in the country. With three main regions – the Appalachian Mountains, the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain – the Tar Heel state offers a range of activities for anyone planning a visit. 

Whether you’re a foodie, a nature lover or simply looking for a new beach for the annual family vacation, here are the top things to do and see across North Carolina.

Best things to do in the Coastal Plain

Make your way out of the sand mazes at the brunswick islands.

North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands are often overlooked for more popular beach destinations like Carolina Beach. But if you're looking for a unique experience, check out this coastal destination to see the creations of local resident Hunter Gibbes, who goes by the name of the Sunset Beach Maze Man . Follow him on social media to find the exact location of the day's maze – which he carves into the sand – and see how long it takes you to get to the finish line.

Beyond the mazes, check out the Oak Island Lighthouse, said to be the last lighthouse built in the state.

Bring along your furry friends – there's even a hashtag, #dogsofncbi, dedicated to your pups and their beach experience. 

Best beaches in North Carolina 

Take an island cruise from Carolina Beach

Carolina Beach’s sunsets are unmatched. That's why booking a sunset cruise tour with a local operator like Island Cruises is a must. Take in the sunset from the water while you sip on your favorite cocktail.

If you're visiting during holiday season, check out the annual Holiday Floatilla, a floating light parade on the water. Dinner is included with your ticket, and there’s also a full cash bar on board. 

Watch baby sea turtles hatch at the Outer Banks

Around mid- to early-summer, sea turtles come to the shores of the Outer Banks to lay their eggs. A month and a half later, the eggs begin to hatch, and the beaches are full of baby turtles preparing to make their way into the waters. 

An important note: never disturb the eggs or the babies. Give them the space they need and avoid handling them. 

Indulge in local oysters with a Wrightsville Beach bites tour

What's a trip to the beach without getting in on some of the local grub? A good place to start is Wrightsville Beach, located about 15 minutes east of Wilmington.

Fan favorites include the bagel sandwiches from The Workshop , oysters from Shark Bar and Kitchen and the blue panda shake from The Original Ice Cream Stand . 

Best things to do in the Piedmont

Get wild at the north carolina zoo.

Head to Asheboro, the heart of Carolina, to check out the state zoo’ s more than 1800 animals. You'll also find hiking trails, a carousel and even a safari on the grounds.

There are food stands and plenty of places to stop and take a break when needed. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes; there will be a lot of walking during your visit. 

Step into your own version of Bridgerton at Tryon Palace

Step back into time at the  Tryon Palace . Located in New Bern (about two hours from Raleigh), the palace was the first permanent capitol building in the state. Built in 1770, the structure was renovated in 1959 and now is a historic American site highlighting the life and times of the people who lived there. 

Explore the grounds' stunning gardens, stately historic homes, museum and more, and you'll feel like you're on the set of a period tv show.

Rock out with one of the state’s most famous musicians at the Dreamville Festival

Rapper J. Cole – a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina – launched his wildly successful Dreamville Festival in Raleigh's Dorothea Dix Park less than five years ago. 

Although postponed during the pandemic, the multi-day music event returned in April of 2022. People from all across the country visited Raleigh to see performances from Cole and other artists from his Dreamville label, along with other popular R&B and rap artists.

Enjoy a meal at a James Beard-nominated restaurant in Charlotte

Most of the state’s mountain towns are within driving distance of a major airport — either Asheville Regional Airport, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, or Piedmont Triad International Airport outside Greensboro.

If you’re in town in the summer, try to time your visit with an open-air show at Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium at Brevard Music Center ; otherwise, a stroll through the downtown art galleries and artisan boutiques is a must in any season.

Named T+L’s Best Small Mountain Town in 2023 , Highlands has all of the necessary characteristics and features for a picture-perfect getaway. It has “the charm of a small mountain town with all the luxury needed for a great vacation,” says Tillung; plus, she adds, there are “some of the best trails in the world,” and “the food and culture are the best you can find in the South.” Start your trip by checking into any one of the top-rated hotels in town: Old Edwards Inn & Spa , Half-Mile Farm, Highlander Mountain House , Skyline Lodge , or the recently opened Outpost Inn . Then, spend a couple of hours along Main Street, making sure to stop in Mountain Fresh Grocery for a quick breakfast or lunch. Other can’t-miss points of interest include the area’s many waterfalls and The Bascom , which hosts art exhibitions, lectures, and various classes and workshops.

Just 10 minutes down the road from Highlands sits Cashiers, a mountain town best known for stunning scenery; golfing, fly fishing, hiking, and antique shopping opportunities; and High Hampton , a much-loved luxury resort that underwent a modern redesign in 2021. Those staying at the resort may be tempted to stay on property the entire time — the Adirondack chairs and lawn beds are rather comfortable — but they’d be remiss to not explore other aspects of the tiny town. Family-owned and operated Cashiers Farmers Market , for instance, is an excellent choice for a barbecue lunch, and you’re bound to purchase something special at Vivianne Metzger Antiques , The Village Hound , or Zoller Hardware Gift & Gadget Mercantile .

Waynesville

According to Reinhold, Waynesville is the “crown jewel of mountain towns,” thanks, in part, to the destination’s prime location by Great Smoky Mountains National Park . To get your heart racing, he recommends “an unforgettable adventure” (think forest bathing or overnight backpacking) with The Appalachian Adventure Company . If you prefer to stay closer to town, browse the art galleries and antique stores along Main Street, and follow that up with a beer at Boojum Brewing Company or a coffee from Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters . Come nightfall, there’s nowhere more luxurious to get some shuteye than The Swag , one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the South .

There’s a lot more to Boone than Appalachian State University, although cheering on the Mountaineers at Kidd Brewer Stadium is certainly a must-do activity in this college town. Families with younger travelers will embark on hours of entertainment at the famous Tweetsie Railroad , with its themed train rides and live shows, and Daniel Boone Park , where the Hickory Ridge History Museum showcases what mountain life was like in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Hot Springs

“I believe Hot Springs might just be the hippest town in Appalachia,” says Reinhold. “The Appalachian Trail passes right through the town — utilizing one of the sidewalks on Main Street — and its throngs of thru-hikers have left their mark on this tiny town.” To prepare for hiking, mountain biking, rafting, or llama trekking in the area, or to pick up any gear you may have forgotten, pop into Bluff Mountain Outfitters . After a long day outside, refuel with pizza at Vinyl Pies , baked goods from Artisun , or a taco and beer from Grey Eagle Taqueria and Big Pillow Brewery . As the name suggests, Hot Springs is also known for its geothermal waters; visitors can head to either Broadwing Farm or Hot Springs Resort & Spa for a rejuvenating soak during their travels.

Bryson City

Biden travels to North Carolina with message that he has ‘delivered for the South’

P resident Biden is set to travel to North Carolina on Tuesday to argue that he has delivered for the South on issues from jobs, lowering costs, and reproductive rights.

The president’s campaign has focused on North Carolina as a battleground state former President Trump won in 2020 that the incumbent is  eyeing to flip in 2024 . Biden plans to communicate how Trump failed the South during his presidency, according to a memo from campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez.

“Our campaign will engage voters across these states, from urban centers to the suburbs and rural areas, where there are more Democratic voters than any other region in the country,” Chavez Rodriguez said. “President Biden and Vice President Harris have delivered for the South after four years of failure under Trump, and our campaign will continue to highlight the stark contrast between their agenda and the MAGA extremism taking hold of the GOP in these states under Trump.”

He will be in Raleigh to deliver remarks and participate in a campaign reception alongside Vice President Harris.

Chavez Rodriguez said North Carolina and Georgia are Southern battleground states critical for the pathways to 270 in November. The trip Tuesday is the last of Biden’s March visits to every battleground state following his State of the Union address; a visit to Georgia kicked off that tour.

“In 2020, Georgia was the closest state in the country won by President Biden, and North Carolina was the closest state in the country won by Donald Trump, making them both extremely competitive states where early investment makes a difference,” she said.

Trump barely beat Biden in North Carolina, taking the Tar Heel State by less than 1 point. An aggregation of polls shows that Trump has a 6.2-point lead over Biden in the state. North Carolina hasn’t gone to a Democrat since 2008.

Chavez Rodriguez, in the memo, also argued that Republicans in states such as North Carolina and Georgia are too extreme. She said “MAGA Republicans” want to limit voting rights in both North Carolina and Georgia, but that Democrats are fighting back.

The Biden campaign said it is investing in Black and Spanish-language media and working with surrogates on the ground, including North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D). Meanwhile, Chavez Rodriguez noted, Trump allies on the ground include gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) in North Carolina and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) in Georgia. 

North Carolina was targeted in the Biden campaign’s six-week $30 million spring ad buy that kicked off in March. One of the ads from the buy included a local voice, Patrick Brown, a North Carolina farmer who touted Biden’s support for rural communities in the South.

Projecting the Panthers Day Two Picks Following Round 1

What will Carolina do in the second and third rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft?

In this story:

The Carolia Panthers were scheduled to be on the clock to kick off the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. That was until GM Dan Morgan struck a deal with the Buffalo Bills to move into the first to select South Carolina WR Xavier Legette. 

This trade now leaves the Panthers with just two picks on Friday (as of now), No. 39 and No. 65. What will Carolina do with those selections? Here’s how I see it.

RD 2, Pick 39: CB Cooper DeJean, Iowa

I never saw a scenario in which DeJean would make it to the second round, but here we are. I imagine Buffalo, New England, and L.A. will have their eyes fixated on receivers while Arizona and Washington look to bolster the trenches. Arizona could be in play for a corner, but they’ll have several to pick from. If DeJean makes it to Carolina at 39, it’s an easy decision, in my opinion.

RD 3, Pick 65: C Zach Frazier, West Virginia

With the way things have gone to this point, I could see both Jackson Powers-Johnson and Frazier lasting awhile. I’ve been mocking the former Mountaineer to Carolina for quite some time, albeit in the second round. He’s a tough, hard-nosed, gritty kid that can start early in his career, but can also learn and develop behind Austin Corbett. Dave Canales constantly talked about challenging the roster, and even mentioned center. I can’t help but think Frazier is their guy here, assuming he makes it to the top of the third round.

Amtrak completes upgrades at durham station.

Customers will experience more accessible path to travel

WASHINGTON – Amtrak is excited to announce renovations at the Durham Station are now complete. The $1.5 million project to improve the station is part of the ongoing and companywide commitment at Amtrak to ensure a safe, efficient, and comfortable travel experience for customers.

The Amtrak Carolinian and Piedmont provide daily service to the station at 601 W. Main Street. The services are sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation and operated by Amtrak and paid for through state funding and passenger fares. The trains operate between Raleigh and Charlotte, with the Carolinian continuing service to New York.

“Providing an accessible travel experience is a priority and we’re actively advancing construction, renovation, repair, and upgrade projects at stations across our national network,” Amtrak Vice President of Accessibility Dr. David Handera said. “We are pleased we delivered these improvements to the Durham station and for our customers and community.”

The renovation project included the installation of new doors and an automatic system for customers to enter and exit the station, and upgrades to the men’s and women’s restrooms. A new fire alarm system and signs were installed. A cane detection rail, a horizontal bar, was installed at the bottom of the ticket counter. The bar is detectable by a person who uses a cane, and it will alert them the counter is within their path.

Customers will access new accessible pathways extending from the parking lot to the station and platform, and accessible parking spaces. The station features new signs along the platform, parking lot and customer drop off area.

“The Federal Railroad Administration is excited about the upgrades completed at Durham Station, and we are proud of our work with Amtrak to ensure more Americans have access to the passenger rail service they need and deserve, which very much includes Americans with disabilities, our aging population, and others who rely on and benefit from accessible and convenient passenger rail,” FRA Administrator Amit Bose said. “As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda and with funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the federal government is investing well over a billion dollars in rail projects and planning activities across North Carolina, and we will continue to invest even more across the country.”

Amtrak has invested more than $850 million since 2011 in accessibility upgrades and improvement projects at 120 stations across the national network to ensure a safe, efficient, and comfortable travel experience for customers with disabilities. The improvements include repairs and upgrades to platforms, ramps and sidewalks, and renovations to entranceways and restrooms, with 20 stations brought into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act last year. Another 35 stations are targeted for completion this fiscal year at a forecasted investment of $165 million.

Our program is advancing 140 station designs and 43 station construction projects as part of Amtrak’s ongoing commitment to providing accessibility by working toward 100% completion by 2029.

“Accessibility to everyone is an important part of the total passenger experience,” Jason Orthner, NCDOT Rail Division director said. “Working with Amtrak and local partners to ensure safe, accessible and convenient travel guarantee future growth and success of passenger rail in North Carolina and beyond.”

“The Durham Station provides many of our residents an alternative mode of transportation across the state and beyond. I am excited about these renovations, as these upgrades will increase accessibility and enhance rail travel for those in need here in Durham,” Mayor Leonardo Williams said.

Asheville Mayor Manheimer to lobby in DC for federal solutions for homelessness

ASHEVILLE - Mayor Esther Manheimer will travel to Washington, D.C. April 28 with a group of nearly 50 mayors to lobby for federal solutions to address homelessness.

The bipartisan group is led by the U.S. Conference of Mayors President Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Chair of USCM’s Task Force on Homelessness. Manheimer is one of two North Carolina mayors participating.

The group will meet with White House officials and members of Congress about the issue of homelessness, which mayors have identified as a top concern, according to an April 26 news release from the USCM.

The advocacy trip will take place April 28-30. In that time, per a draft schedule, mayors will meet with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development acting Secretary Adrianne Todman, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, among others.

The delegation will push to expand veteran eligibility for housing vouchers so that veterans don’t have to choose between their benefits and housing eligibility. They will also advocate for increased funding for housing choice vouchers and a cap for project-based vouchers, the release said.

"I was asked to attend and I think that's because we have gotten some national attention on this issue," Manheimer told the Citizen Times April 26. "But in the bigger context of things, there are 41 mayors on the list, and some of them ... when you think of those cities you don't think of this issue, but they are all struggling with it."

Asheville's 2024 point in time count numbers , released April 25, found 739 people experiencing homelessness — 520 in shelter and transitional housing, 219 unsheltered. This represents a steep increase from the year prior, which the city attributes to an expanded methodology and more intensive count process.

Across the country, numbers are up. HUD's 2023 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report, published in December, found that the 2023 count was the highest number of people found to be homeless on a single night since reporting began in 2007.

Experiences of homelessness increased nationwide across all household types. Between 2022 and 2023, it rose 12%, or by roughly 70,650 people.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Early voting begins for North Carolina primary runoff races

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Early in-person voting started on Thursday across North Carolina for next month’s runoff elections, including one congressional and two statewide primary contests.

Voters are choosing this fall’s Republican nominees for lieutenant governor, state auditor and the 13th Congressional District seat. These May 14 runoffs, also known as “second primaries,” occurred because the candidate with the most votes in the March 5 primaries for these races failed to receive more than 30% of the vote. The second-place candidate had to formally ask for a runoff.

The lieutenant governor’s GOP runoff is between Hal Weatherman and Jim O’Neill, while the nomination for state auditor is between Jack Clark and Dave Boliek. Kelly Daughtry and Brad Knott are seeking the 13th District nomination. The winners will face Democratic rivals — and in some cases Libertarian Party candidates — in the fall.

These GOP primary runoffs are open to all registered Republicans in the state, or in the case of the congressional race, registered Republicans within the 13th District. Unaffiliated voters who either didn’t vote or voted Republican in the March primaries also can participate, the State Board of Elections said in a news release.

Early voting in all 100 counties continues through May 11. Generally, most counties have just one early-vote site for the runoffs.

A GOP primary runoff is also being conducted for a Gaston County commissioner’s seat. And there’s a race to fill a seat on the nonpartisan Orange County Board of Education that had different runoff rules.

Same-day registration is unavailable during early voting because the registration of new voters is not permitted between the first and second primaries. But people who become eligible to vote during the two primaries can both register and vote on May 14, the state board said.

Traditional mail-in absentee voting for the runoffs began in late March when county boards started sending ballots to those who requested them.
