12 Best Dachau Tours

Of all the concentration camps established by the Nazis during World War II, Dachau was the first, and it opened nearly 7 years before the official declaration of war by Germany.

The camp is located just a few kilometers from Munich in the German state of Bavaria, and due to its proximity, most tours of Dachau begin in Munich, so if you’d like to see the camp and spend more than a few days in the area, that’s probably where you’ll stay.

Dachau was liberated by the Allied Forces in April 1945, and according to documents there were more than 30,000 deaths that had taken place in the camp over the years.

Below is a list of 12 of the best tours of Dachau.

1. Munich and Nazi History Combo Day-Tour

Munich, Germany

This Munich – Dachau combo tour kicks off at the famous Marienplatz central square in downtown Munich.

From there, tour guests, along with their guide, will utilize the public transportation system to get to Dachau, where they’ll get a thorough historic narration as they visit every corner of the camp that was the macabre home to hundreds of thousands of Jews during its 12 year existence.

You’ll have time to strike out on your own too and take extra time at specific areas or exhibits that you find particularly poignant or interesting.

Upon return to Marienplatz at 3:00 PM you and your companions will set off on a walking tour through Munich, where you’ll visit historically significant areas.

2. Dachau Full-Day Tour in English

Dachau Memorial

Though Dachau is just one of many similar camps that were spread over Europe during World War II, it’s one of the most well-known, and was the first of its kind when it opened in early 1933.

This tour includes the services of a local, official guide who’ll be able to answer your questions and add a lot of value to this already amazing site.

You’ll learn why the camp was opened, what the official plans were for those who were forced to live and work here, and what life was like for the soldiers and guards that were stationed here as well.

You’ll get access to the amazing first-hand stories of people who lived and died here, and some from those who were lucky enough to make it out with their lives as well.

3. Private Tour of Dachau Concentration Camp

Dachau Concentration Camp

Curt’s tours are considered some of the most enlightening and heart-wrenching of all the tours that are available at Dachau.

Though the site itself is a real eye-opener, for those interested in knowing everything there is to know, the service of a professional guide is invaluable.

The tour includes all the areas inside the camp, including admittance and orientation, living, eating, and working areas, and of course the facilities built specifically to extinguish the most amount of lives in as an efficient and inexpensive manner as possible.

Your tour guide Curt is an American, who is licensed as a guide and has been giving tours of the site to visitors for more than 10 years.

4. Dachau Memorial Site and Shooting Range Tour

Dachau

This Munich-based tour of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial site also includes a visit to the nearby SS shooting range.

The tour, which lasts approximately 6 ½ hours, includes entry into the museum and a short documentary film that’s a great introduction for first-time visitors.

Visitors will hear the horrific stories of the sadistic experiments that were carried out here, and after seeing all the area’s highlights, guests will have a little free time to process all the things they’ve just seen.

It’s really a once in a life time opportunity, and this tour gives guests plenty of time to take it all in.

Everything is included except food, drink, and gratuities.

5. Dachau Concentration Camp Tour by Train

Dachau Concentration Camp

This 5-hour tour of the Holocaust Memorial Site at Dachau begins in Munich and includes transportation to and from the city to the memorial site.

The tour includes stops at all the important areas of the camp like the prisoner and guard barracks, as well as the medical facilities and the extermination chambers.

Though not all of the site’s structures are original, they’ve been restored to return them to near-original shape, so that guests can get a true feeling of how it must have felt to be an unwilling occupant here.

Many visitors are surprised to learn that in addition to Jews, Poles, homosexuals, and clergy members were also sent here.

6. Dachau Small Group Tour from Munich via Train

Dachau Gate

For those who’ve got the time to dedicate a full-day to visiting this unique historical site, this tour from Munich would be a great choice.

Your guide will not only explain the sights you’re seeing at the memorial, but you’ll also learn about the conditions that existed in Germany that led to the rise of Adolf Hitler and The Third Reich.

It’s a fascinating tale and is really world history, as opposed to just German history.

The global war that ensued as a direct result killed millions and changed the world as we know it.

You’ll have time for a bit of self-guided exploration as well.

7. Walking Tour of Dachau from Munich via Train

Dachau Crematorium Ovens

Taking the train from Munich is a great way to see the outskirts of the city before entering the concentration camp.

For much of the Nazi’s rise to power, Munich was a city that was central to the aims of The Third Reich, and as such is one of the most historically-relevant cities of the Second World War.

Visitors will get up close and personal with the camp’s barracks, transportation system, cells, and where the inmates were taken for extermination.

The gas chambers are probably the most lurid of all the camp’s areas, and it’s almost unfathomable to put yourself in the shoes of an inmate marching to their certain death.

This tour requires a fair amount of walking and lasts about 5 hours.

Transportation via train to and from the site are included in the tour’s cost.

8. Dachau Concentration Camp Private Tour from Munich

Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany

For many visitors to Dachau, a half-day tour is the right amount of time to see all the camp has to offer without overdoing it.

Not surprisingly, Dachau can be an emotionally overwhelming place, so before booking a tour carefully consider how much time you’d like to spend onsite.

Guests will walk through the camp’s eerie gate which claims that, ‘work will set you free.’

Obviously, freedom wasn’t an option for the majority of the inmates sent here, though some lucky souls did make it out alive.

This tour hits all the camps most important areas and give guests a well-rounded overview of the camp’s history in a relatively short amount of time.

9. Frankfurt to Munich City, Dachau Concentration Camp Day Trip

Crematorium Dachau

This full-day tour begins in Frankfurt and includes stops at Munich and Dachau as well.

All portions of the tour are guided, and the tour’s first stop is the Dachau Memorial, and includes the barracks, work areas, and gas chambers to name a few highlights.

Following the tour of Dachau, you’ll proceed to historic Munich for another guided tour.

Sights to be seen in Munich include the Old Town Hall, Marienplatz, the Cathedral of our Blessed Lady, and a few of the beer halls made famous as meeting places for Nazi organizers and sympathizers leading up to them taking control of the German government.

Though this tour makes for a long day, it’s perhaps the most well-rounded and value packed of all Dachau tours.

10. Private Round Trip to Dachau Camp from Munich Hotels

Crematorium Dachau

If you’d prefer to have someone else worry about the tedious details when traveling, this hassle-free tour of Dachau is a great choice.

Transportation to and from your Munich hotel is included, and once at the camp site you’ll have ample time to give yourself a self-guided tour.

The grounds and museum are laid out well to facilitate guests in seeing all the site has to offer in an efficient way.

Once you’ve had your fill of this unique spot, you’ll meet your driver who’ll zip you and your travel companions back to your Munich hotel.

It’s just a short drive, but it will give you a little time to reflect on the magnitude of what you’ve just seen.

11. Munich World War II Sites: Dachau and Third Reich Walking Tour

Dachau Monument

This walking tour of Dachau and other sites related to The Third Reich will give guests plenty of access to camp grounds while stretching their legs and getting plenty of fresh air as well.

Guests will enjoy a guided tour of the camp that’ll hit all its most important areas and includes plenty of history leading up to the war as well.

The second portion of the tour includes a walk to some of Munich’s most historic sites, and you’ll learn about their significance and the parts they played in the historical saga that played out in Germany in the ‘30s and ‘40s.

This tour includes transportation from Munich to the site and back but doesn’t include hotel pickup and drop-off.

12. Munich to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, Private Tour

Dachau

For World War II history buffs, there may be no better place to visit than the concentration camp grounds at Dachau.

It’s been turned into a permanent memorial to remember those who walked through its gates, in the hope that education will prevent such a catastrophe from ever happening again.

On this private guided-tour, guests will get a poignant overview of the camp’s layout, and how it was used in the wholesale extermination of Jews, and anybody else who attempted to stand up to the Nazi State.

Multiple start times are available, and hotel pickup and drop-off is included if they’re requested at the time of booking.

The tour brochure provides information for visitors to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. It guides readers through the grounds and exhibitions in twenty stations, with a further six stations devoted to important locations near the Memorial Site. Based on the latest research and written in a clear and succinct style, the brochure follows the history of the Dachau concentration camp up until 1945 and the subsequent uses of the grounds from 1945 through to the present day. Numerous photographs, some of them historical, as well as drawings and accounts by survivors complement the text. Overview layouts enable visitors to locate different relicts of the concentration camp and places of remembrance. Aerial photographs allow connections to be made between the historical grounds of the concentration camp and today’s Memorial Site. PEOPLE'S 24 Hour Food Tour: Chicago

It may be known as the Second City, but Chicago is second to none when it comes to a memorable and diverse food scene. We pick the best places to eat in one delicious day

Writer Ari Bendersky has covered Chicago’s dining scene for nearly 20 years. From serving as founding editor of Eater Chicago to writing for many local and national publications (including WSJ magazine, New York Times, and Food & Wine) to launching his own Substack newsletter, Something Glorious , he continues to deliver the goods on where to eat, what wine and spirits to drink, and what’s happening in the lives of some of the world’s top chefs.

Chicago is inarguably one of the top culinary destinations in the U.S. From its legendary humbler fare (Chicago-style pizza and the requisite Chicago hot dog "dragged through the garden") to on-the-rise young chefs cooking the food of their cultures to some of the most lauded high-end cuisine in the country (there’s a reason the annual James Beard Foundation Awards are held here each year), there's something for everyone within the city limits.

That, of course, makes it almost impossible to put together an itinerary for a visitor looking to try the best of the city's eats in just one day. In fact, narrowing down your options might be some of the toughest decisions you ever make, up there with "Do I go to a top college to study engineering or go straight to work in a hot tech company?" and "Is a ticket to see Taylor Swift more important than covering my rent this month?"

Like we said, these aren't easy decisions, but you have to make the choice and just go with it. From breakfast to dinner to a late-night indulgence, Chicago has more options than you have time, so choose wisely — ideally with some guidance from those of us who take this "research" seriously. Here are our picks for where to dine during one day in one of the country’s best food cities.

Breakfast: Tiztal Cafe

Tiztal Cafe

No matter where you’re staying, grab a rideshare or hop on the “L” train and head to Uptown to this super cute Latin women-owned gem. Yes, you can get pancakes, scrambled eggs or an omelet, but Tiztal’s Mexican breakfast, especially the chilaquiles, is why you come here. Made with fresh crisp tortillas and green salsa, the dish gets topped with warm baked chihuahua cheese and cilantro (go extra and top it with steak and eggs, their specialty). Or opt for the huevos rancheros or chorizo scramble. But if you want simple eggs, be sure to ask for some pico de gallo and tortillas on the side. Pro tip: if it’s warm out, ask to sit on their recently renovated hidden backyard patio filled with Mexican art.

Lunch: Lula Cafe

Kyle Kissel

A mainstay in Chicago’s culinary world, Lula Cafe has been serving some of the best lunch (and let’s not forget dinner) for 25 years. The restaurant is led by chef/owner Jason Hammel, a multiple James Beard Award nominee and champion of the farm to table movement. Lula elevates brunch — you can order off the full brunch and lunch menu between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. — while remaining utterly cozy.

Keep it simple with buttermilk pancakes, or opt for a perfectly cooked French omelet filled with butternut squash, ricotta, and pear mostarda that’s served with a petit salad of local greens. Or go for baked French feta with marinated olives and a punchy jalapeño basil oil; the classic Lula ‘99 turkey sandwich layered with avocado, lettuce, and chili oil; or this writer’s favorite warming chickpea and fennel tagine with spiced green harissa and sweet golden raisins. Your table might be about to buckle after ordering everything that sounds delicious, but you should also treat yourself to one of their brunch cocktails — you’re on vacation, right?

Sweet Treat: Mindy’s Bakery

Aliza J Sokolow

After winning a James Beard Award for outstanding pastry chef, running a successful restaurant, and launching a massively successful edible cannabis brand, what’s left for Mindy Segal to do? Open her namesake bakery. Set in Wicker Park, Mindy’s Bakery sees people lining up early for an array of baked goods pulling from European and Middle Eastern traditions. Her housemade bagels and bialys are a huge draw, but if you're indulging an afternoon sweet tooth, you can’t pass up a twice-baked almond croissant, hot fudge glazed donuts, marbled sour cream coffee cake with cocoa nib streusel, and the smattering of hot-out-the-oven cookies, bars, brioche tarts, and cakes.

(Bonus pick: If you're here on a hot day and need to chill out, check out Pretty Cool Ice Cream , with locations in Logan Square and Lincoln Park, for inventive ice cream pops from award-winning pastry chef Dana Cree.)

Dinner: Shaw’s Crab House

Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants

There are any number of newer hotspots we could send you to (some recent favorites include Maxwells Trading , Obelix , Brasero , or Daisies — and frankly, if you have more time, definitely go to any one of these). But for a true "classic Chicago" dinner out, the city's 40-year mainstay Shaw’s Crab House is a fun stop with something for everyone.

It's two restaurants in one – the more formal dining room that throws back to the Rat Pack era and a casual and boisterous oyster bar. You can get steak or chicken, but it is a "crab house," after all, so definitely indulge in some of its popular seafood. Start with a dozen oysters flown in fresh from around North America. Move on to jumbo lump crab cakes or a cup of creamy New England clam chowder. Then settle in for seared Alaskan halibut, a lobster roll, or chilled stone crab claws (when in season).

Late Night Snack: The Wiener's Circle

Gabriella Zammuto

When you want a side of sass with your Chicago dog, head to the infamous Wiener's Circle . With a counter team known for dishing out fiery insults to an often drunk late-night (and even daytime) crowd, Wiener’s Circle has all the classic Chicago hot dog stand staples: Chicago dogs, char cheddar burgers, char Polish, cheddar fries, and more.

You might also get a side of a celeb sighting with your ketchup-free dog: Ed Sheeran has served food from behind the counter; Eagles center Jason Kelce arrived to find the restaurant’s sign reading “Welcome Taylor's Boyfriends Brother” (and gave back as good as he got), and global DJ Marshmello recently performed from the rooftop. This spot is definitely a vibe.

Spot a Celeb At: RPM Steak

Lindsay Eberly / Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants

This Chicago steakhouse, located in the heart of busy River North, has long been a beacon for the rich and famous. That should come as no surprise, since RPM Steak is owned in part by Bill and Giuliana Rancic.

Recent visitors include Chris Rock, Sophia Bush, Mariah Carey, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and they’re not just coming for its welcoming hospitality. It’s all about the food and drinks here.

The draw is the nearly 20 steak options like the 28-day dry-aged, 16-ounce New York Strip and four cuts of Japanese wagyu (priced per ounce) you can pair with decadent sauces and butters like black truffle bearnaise or king crab Oscar. But the giant seafood towers, warm Parker House rolls, spicy miso lobster, and whole roasted Dover sole add to the appeal. The extensive and impressive wine list? The cherry on top of it all.

Layton and Taylorsville will join 17 other temples currently functioning in Utah. They are Bountiful, Brigham City, Cedar City, Draper, Jordan River (South Jordan), Logan, Monticello, Mount Timpanogos (American Fork), Ogden, Oquirrh Mountain (South Jordan), Orem , Payson, Provo City Center (converted from the former Provo Tabernacle ), Red Cliffs (St. George — dedicated in March ); Saratoga Springs, St. George and Vernal.

The iconic Salt Lake Temple is undergoing extensive renovation and is expected to reopen in 2026. The space-age Provo Temple closed in February , and — despite the efforts of some community members and preservationists — is being overhauled. (It will be renamed the Provo Rock Canyon Temple.) Renovations were recently completed for the Manti Temple, another pioneer-era architectural gem, which is set to be rededicated Sunday by apostle Ronald A. Rasband.

Eight more — Deseret Peak (Tooele), Ephraim, Heber Valley, Lehi , Lindon, Smithfield, Syracuse and West Jordan — are either under construction or in planning stages. When all are completed, that will bring the number of temples in Utah to a whopping 30.

Nelson has announced 168, or 48%, of the global faith’s 350 planned or existing temples around the world.

Scottie Scheffler wins 2024 Masters Tournament for 2nd win in 3 years

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: April 14, 2024 / 10:00 PM EDT / CBS News

Scottie Scheffler secured his second Masters Tournament  victory in three years on Sunday, finishing 11 under and four strokes up on his closest competitors.

The 27-year-old American was tied with Ludvig Aberg, Max Homa and Collin Morikawa coming into the eighth hole before the world no. 1 hit three straight birdies to take the lead for good. Aberg ended up placing second in his debut at the Masters.

Scheffler has been ranked No. 1 in the world for more than two years now and also won the 2022 Masters tournament, which was his first major championship win.

The Masters - Final Round

The tournament was marked by unruly weather and at least one history-making moment. Golf icon and returning Masters champion Tiger Woods opened the tournament's last leg with his 100th round at the major.

The Masters Tournament is an invitational event held yearly at the Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf course in Augusta, Georgia. Since its establishment in 1934, the tournament has grown to become one of the four most important championships in men's professional golf. The tournament typically takes place during the first week of April, so they are the first major event of every season, followed by the PGA Championships, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship, which are usually held in May, June and July, respectively.

Scheffler and Morikawa held first and second on the 2024 Masters leaderboard , in that order, heading into the fourth round, on Sunday. They teed off in the afternoon as the last pairing of the day. Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau also began their play in a featured afternoon slot, with DeChambeau in fifth place on the leaderboard and Schauffele in sixth at the start of the round.

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm , the 29-year-old who won the Masters tournament last year, returned to the course Sunday to defend his title, although his performances during the preceding rounds this weekend meant he was no longer competing to win. Woods had fallen out of contention, too, by the tournament's last day. After making his 24th consecutive cut on Friday, which was a new record at the championship, the star golfer went on to shoot a personal worst during the next and third round. At 48, Woods is a decorated golfing champion with five previous wins at the Masters. He teed off Sunday morning with the 23-year-old amateur Neal Shipley, commencing his 100th Masters round.

Masters Golf

Scheffler will receive a huge cash prize in addition to the traditional green jacket, which is given to the Masters winner each year. The overall purse for the 2024 Masters is $20 million, setting a new record-high and jumping $2 million from last year's prize fund.

The champion this year will receive $3.6 million from the purse, which is also a new record and up from the $3.2 million payout that Rahm received for his Masters win in 2023. What remained of the total $18 million purse in that case was divided among 50 golfers who participated in the tournament, with their individual scores determining how much prize money they were eventually awarded.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The second day of the 88th Masters was never going to be kind to Tiger Woods. It was an intersection of worst-case scenarios, with Woods having to play early and often in cold temperatures. It takes him hours to get his battered body ready to play golf, which meant an early wake-up call Friday morning to resume his first round at 7:50 a.m.

He had to play the final five holes of his opening round before arriving at the first tee to start his second. For a man who said earlier this week that “every shot that’s not on a tee box is a challenge,” 18 holes is more than enough. Especially on the hilliest course players face all year. Add in the cold and windy conditions that make it difficult to loosen up a body pieced together by screws and rods and fused joints, and it seemed that the factors had conspired against him this week.

But Friday also was an opportunity to make more history at a course he admires more than any other. Woods said earlier this week that he is here to win. That he teed it up because he believes another victory is still possible “if everything comes together.” Victories are what drive him, but they do not cause him to downplay the seemingly mundane act of just making the cut.

On Friday, he had the opportunity to establish another record cuts streak. He was seeking his 24th consecutive made cut in this tournament, a streak that would surpass the mark he shared with Gary Player and Fred Couples. Despite the unfavorable conditions and his physical limitations, Woods did so with relative ease, shooting 73-72 to finish well inside the line . He was T25 when he walked off the 18th green Friday afternoon. He promised that a needling text message would soon be sent to Couples to mark the occasion.

“It's consistency, it's longevity, and it's an understanding of how to play this golf course,” Woods said Tuesday of the record. "Now, you still have to go out and execute it, but there's a lot of knowledge that goes into understanding how to play (Augusta National). …That's the neat thing about this. I can still go through the mental Rolodex and bring out a few putts from the '90s that still move generally in that direction and the effect that Rae's Creek has on certain shots and putts. And it means a lot.”

Woods’ affection for Augusta National comes not just from the genius of Alister MacKenzie’s design, which allows him to fully utilize his creativity and shot-making skills, but also because of the course’s annual accumulation of history. This is the same place where he played his first major championship, competing in 1995 as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion. He watched from the Crow’s Nest as Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead hit the ceremonial tee shots. Three years later, he marveled at the fact that those three were drinking the milkshakes he had on his Champion’s Dinner menu.

“There's such an aura and mystique about playing this golf course,” he said.

He played practice rounds with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in his first Masters, and has been playing here long enough to see the likes of Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler put on the green jacket. Augusta National spans generations. Woods missed the cut in his second Masters, so this record-setting streak started with his 12-shot victory here in 1997. He has won here five times but also played through swing changes and injury and personal scandal. No matter what, he has always found a way to make the cut. For two dozen years in a row.

Tiger Woods’ 1997 victory at the Masters | 25 years later

Woods tied the record last year by slogging through torrential rains and temperatures in the 40s as he completed his suspended second round early on a Saturday morning. Woods, who would need ankle surgery weeks later, was seen limping up the hill on the par-4 17th as he finished his round.

This year, he arrived at Augusta National with just 24 holes of competitive golf under his belt.

Though he said late last year that he hoped to compete once a month in 2024, Woods only appeared at The Genesis Invitational before this week. Six holes into his second round at Riviera, he had to withdraw with the flu . His body didn’t allow him to make another start before Augusta, he said.

“Some days I just feel really good,” he said, “and other days, not so much.”

Athletes reflect on Tiger Woods’ 2019 Masters victory

His mind, and his hands, are still world class. The question each time he tees it off is whether his body will allow him to use them to their full capabilities. Woods plays the role of wily veteran these days. No longer overpowering courses with his length, he hits a sliding fade off the tee to keep his ball in play and uses a crafty short game to stay around par. He made the cut easily despite hitting less than half his greens (17 of 36).

"His short game was so good. I don't think I can explain how good some of the chip shots he hit today were," said Max Homa, who played alongside Woods. "He's special.

"We had a really quick turnaround, and if I was feeling tired and awful. I imagine he was feeling even worse," Homa added. "All the cliches you hear about him and all the old stories about how he will grind it out, it was fun to see that in person."

Woods was 1-under par when play was suspended Thursday evening . He made two bogeys on the five holes he played Friday morning, signing for a 1-over 73. He started the second round with pars on his first two holes before playing a six-hole stretch without a single par. He made birdie on the third hole, hitting a 91-yard wedge shot to 9 feet before bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5, two of the course’s most difficult holes. Then he chipped in on the par-3 sixth. He made another bogey after finding a greenside bunker on the par-4 seventh and rebounded with birdie at the par-5 eighth. Five consecutive pars followed before a bogey at the 14th hole. But he reached the green in two to birdie the par-5 15th before closing with three consecutive pars.

“I'm here,” he said. “I have a chance to win the golf tournament.”

That wouldn’t be possible without making the cut. Add another record to Woods’ remarkable Masters career.

Out of the 13 LIV players who started the 88th edition of The Masters on Thursday, only nine made the cut on Friday. Those players proceeded to the final round at Augusta National in pursuit of the championship, but alas, no such victory for LIV golf emerged.

Jon Rahm , the defending Masters champion and LIV golfer, had a rough start to his campaign for consecutive green jackets, scoring 1-over-73 on Thursday, 2-over-74 on Friday, and even-72 on Saturday. He remained unable to recapture his magic from 2023 in the final round on Sunday, shooting a 4-over-76.

At one point during the tournament, it appeared possible that Bryson DeChambeau , another LIV golfer, could compete for the top spot with favorite Scottie Scheffler . DeChambeau scored a 7-under-65 on Day 1. But unfortunately, he was never able to reach 8-under. He spent the next three days slowly falling out of the top-five at Augusta, and was not even the sole top-finishing LIV golfer, with Cameron Smith tying him for sixth place in the tournament at 2-under-par.

Here is the final leaderboard for the LIV golfers after Round 4 of the 2024 Masters Tournament:
