Recent tour reviews

The concert was really great.

The show was a long journey through the band's discography except themes from their most recent album: Gore.

The set was really powerful, even though the stage sound experienced some technical issues on the first two songs.

What a night! The band opened with "Headup" from their sophomore album, Around the Fur, then dove straight into "My Own Summer". These two tracks made me super happy because they were some of my absolute favorites when I was an angry teenager. LOL. (I guess I still kind of am today.)

Just after those two older songs, they floored the crowd with the opening track from Koi No Yokan - "Swerve City," followed by two more from White Pony - "Digital Bath," and "Elite." The former being a sonic landscape of pure magic and the latter being an absolute bone-crushing performance. (Although I will say the vocoder part on that track got on my nerves a bit since it sounded like it was overpowering the rest of the instruments.)

To my surprise, they only played one track from the new album, Gore, which was "The Phantom Bride," though it was hauntingly beautiful. (I was really hoping for Prayers/Triangles - but it was still great!)

This was followed by another slower song, "You've Seen the Butcher" - which is just a brutally heavy (almost jazzy) tune from the album Diamond Eyes.

Another Diamond Eyes track was next - "Rocket Skates" - which was arguably the most fun and energetic of the entire set in my opinion. The chorus, "GUNS! RAZORS! KNIVES! FUCK WITH ME!" showed on little LED panels behind the band - it was so cool to watch and sing along.

Another slow burner from Koi No Yokan, "Rosemary," followed. I love this song with its plodding intensity, soaring chorus, and absolutely devastating breakdown at the end.

A crowd favorite from White Pony (probably their most popular album) followed, which was extremely intense with the screams in the middle of the track. Man, HOW DOES CHINO DO THAT?!?! I know it was a woman on the album, but I swear I we witnessed him throw an absolutely blood-curdling shriek right toward the end of the song. WOW.

The band did something sneaky next. The played the first verse of "Rivière" from Saturday Night Wrist before stomping through the heavier part of the end of that song. Again, I was a little disappointed (Why not "Hole in the Earth"? Darn. Next time.) Still, very cool.

Two more Deftones classics followed from White Pony - "Change (In the House of Flies)" and "Back to School (Mini Maggit)". These aren't my favorites - I got really tired of "Change" when the band blew up in the early 2000s, but the still jammed hard, so nothing to complain about their performance.

The last two songs were "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" - which is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS - and "Minerva," - from the self-titled album - which is my best friend's favorite song. Both were absolutely wonderful; the crowd was absolutely insane during the last song.

Then Chino dropped his guitar. The stage went dark and they walked off stage... the air was so thick and you could just feel something very special was about to happen.

Then we saw the bassist sneak back to his spot... it was an encore! The evening closed with "Teething" from the Crow 2 Soundtrack. Folks, let me tell you THEY. KILLED. THIS. SONG. It was amazing. I have long loved this track and it was the absolute perfect way to end the night.

Overall, I wish we'd heard more stuff from the new album, Gore, and my wife REAAAAALLLLY wanted them to play the title track "Diamond Eyes" from their sixth album.

But all-in-all I'm a huge fan and that will never change! I absolutely loved the concert. Chino, Abe, Stef and the rest of the band were all incredible and I can't wait to see them again!

Amazing performance by Deftones. Three trapped tigers and thrice sounded great as well. Rise Against had their hands full closing out the show after deftones just killed it. I am suprised they didnt just let deftones close every night. No offense to rise against but coming after a band thats been around as long as deftones would be tough for anybody. They sounded okay, Mid Florida Ampitheatre is a tough one because its built almost in a dome atmosphere essentially making it a big as subwoofer. So bass and drums kinda carry abit over guitars and vocals. Set wise Deftones felt a little short, almost rushed mainly due to Tampa curfew. But I am a Deftones fan since the beginning so ofcourse I want to here 30 songs from their catalog everytime. Thrice really blew me away. They really havent lost any steps since being away for abit. Every song was crisp and clear. You could tell they were really enjoying themselves and trying like hell to take in all the time they were given. Three trapped tigers were also a nice treat. It makes me wonder what these guys could do if they were to add a vocalist in the mix. Being strictly instrumental is tough to do especially opening for bands like Rise Against and Deftones. But that being said those guys were juggernauts on their respective instruments so that has to be acknowledged and appreciated by fans of any genre. Overall solid show and interesting tour pairing. Both deftones and rise against probably gained some new ears for their music so it was a win win for both bands.

System of a Down + Deftones Announce First of Its Kind Show at Historic Venue

System of a Down and Deftones have announced a first of its kind show at a historic venue in California set to take place this summer.

The standalone concert, headlined by the two bands, will take place on Aug. 17 at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, making it the first-ever ticketed concert to take place there, according to Pollstar . The Mars Volta , Viagra Boys and VOWWS are set to perform during the show as well.

Golden Gate Park has been home to the annual Outside Lands festival several times in the past, and is where the event will take place this year from Aug. 9 through the 11. Most of the stages will be taken down at the end of the weekend, but one of the main stages will remain, which is the one System and Deftones will play on the following weekend.

"For the first time ever, a stand-alone, once in a lifetime event at the historic Golden Gate Park, System of a Down and Deftones," a video graphic posted by both bands reads.

Fans can sign up for the bands' mailing lists for early access to tickets, and then the general sale starts this Friday, April 12 at 1PM ET.

System of a Down Will Only Play Two Shows in 2024

This Golden Gate Park concert with Deftones marks System of a Down's second performance of 2024, with the first taking place later this month (April 27) at Las Vegas' Sick New World Festival .

Previously, frontman Serj Tankian told Revolver that Sick New World would "likely" be System's only performance in 2024, as touring isn't his main priority anymore.

"After years of doing it and the travel that's involved, it's one of those things where it's not the top priority on my list in life," the vocalist said.

Golden Gate Park Plans to Host Annual Concerts in the Future

While SOAD and Deftones will play the first ticketed concert at Golden Gate Park, Allen Scott of Another Planet Entertainment , the promoter that hosts Outside Lands, said that they already have next year's post-festival concert in the works.

“We wanted to host something that is unique and rare... Not just an artist that’s on tour and it’s another stop for them,” he told Pollstar.

"System of a Down is very particular in what concerts they do and how many they do. Deftones, who are from Northern California, are bigger than they’ve ever been in the history of the band. It felt like really good timing to put those two together, and then add a few bands to play prior to them... We wanted to put together a lineup that was not only unique but culturally relevant.”

By Althea Legaspi

UPDATE (7/9/21): Deftones have decided to reschedule their 2021 tour with Gojira for 2022, citing ongoing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Tickets for all 2021 shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates and refunds will be available for those who can’t attend. Deftones and Gojira have also added new shows in Las Vegas, Cincinnati and Nashville; tickets for those gigs will go on sale July 16th at 10 a.m. local time via Deftones’ website. An updated tour itinerary is below.

Deftones have announced the new dates for their rescheduled North American tour. The trek, which was initially planned to launch this month, was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 26-date run will now commence in August 2021.

It will be the group’s first full U.S. summer tour since 2017. Both original guests, Gojira and Poppy, remain on the rescheduled tour. It kicks off on August 12th at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota and continues through the Midwest and Canada before heading to the East Coast and south. It culminates with a string of dates on the West Coast, ending in Portland, Oregon at Theatre of the Clouds at Moda Center on September 22nd.

“If you bought tickets for one of the 2020 shows and cannot make the rescheduled show, you will receive an email directly allowing you to request a refund,” the band posted on Facebook , along with announcing their newly rescheduled dates. “For more details, please visit  livenation.com/refund . Please hold on to your tickets, as they will be honored for the 2021 dates. Thank you for your patience and understanding.” Additional tickets are available .

In June, the band marked the 20th anniversary of third album White Pony , which will be reissued sometime this year. They are planning to release a remix LP called Black Stallion , which will feature all-new remixes of White Pony tracks, each rendered by a different producer. Deftones have also completed their ninth studio album, the follow-up to 2016’s Gore , which is expected to arrive later this year.

Deftones Announce Summer 2021 Tour, Share New “Ceremony” Video: Watch

By Matthew Strauss

Chino Moreno

Deftones have announced a tour that’s scheduled to begin this summer. Gojira will support Deftones at various stops on the U.S. trek. Check out the band’s itinerary, which includes a number of festival dates, below.

Along with the tour announcement, Deftones have shared the music video for their Ohms song “Ceremony.” The clip is helmed by Leigh Whannell, who directed last year’s The Invisible Man . The new visual stars Cleopatra Coleman. Watch “Ceremony” below.

Deftones frontmann Chino Moreno said in a press release:

When Leigh tweeted that he was a fan, we immediately thought it would be cool to collaborate with him given the chance. We’re fans of his as well, so it made sense that we should reach out. One moment we’re DM’ing each other on Twitter, and the next we’re on set making “Ceremony.’ This has always been the best way for us to collaborate: organically, collaboratively and in this case, expeditiously. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we had making it.

Leigh Whannelll added:

I’ve been a huge Deftones fan for over 20 years and have always admired the devotion they have dedicated to every aspect of their art—from music videos to album covers to their cryptic and intriguing lyrics. To get a chance to be a part of that art was a dream come true.

Breaking News

Music | layoffs jolt bay area: golden gate fields, genentech, intel ax hundreds, music | outside lands promoters to hold another huge concert in golden gate park, system of a down, deftones headline event.

Chino Moreno and the Sacramento band Deftones will perform at Golden Gate Park the weekend after Outside Lands.

The producers of Outside Lands are giving music fans a really good reason to spend another full day in August in Golden Gate Park.

Actually, they are giving them two good reasons:

System of a Down and Deftones.

Those two popular hard rock acts are set to headline a one-night-only concert at the historic park in San Francisco on Aug. 17.

The show — which runs 3 to 10 p.m. that day — also features a solid list of opening acts including The Mars Volta, Viagra Boys and VOWWS.

Tickets cost $169-$399 and go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. April 12 via GoldenGateParkConcerts.com and Ticketmaster.com . Artist presales begin at 10 a.m. April 10, while there is a presale from Outside Lands promotor Another Planet Presents ( apeconcerts.com ) kicking off at 10 a.m. April 11.

“We are excited to be bringing such an iconic lineup to the city and what better venue than Golden Gate Park,” says Allen Scott, president of concerts and festivals at Another Planet Entertainment, which also books shows at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco and many other venues.

The concert takes place the weekend following the three-day Outside Lands music festival, which will host dozens of acts on multiple stages Aug. 9-11. System of a Down, Deftones and the other acts will perform in Golden Gate Park’s Polo Field, which is where the biggest of Outside Lands’ stages — the Lands End Stage — is located. (The Outside Lands lineup will be announced April 23.)

The Aug. 17 show will use much of the infrastructure erected for Outside Lands — such as the staging, production elements, bathrooms, etc. Yet, it will be a one-stage event and be contained to a smaller area than what one gets with the overall Outside Lands footprint.

This is the first year that Another Planet will be hosting a post-OSL concert in the park. The intention is for this to be an annual event, with the Berkeley-based promoters having gained approval to host one-to-three concerts in Golden Gate Park on the weekend following Outside Lands each year for the next three years.

Tacking on a second music event to a pre-existing festival is a cost-saving/synergy strategy that is employed by a number of music promoters. The best-known and most-successful example would be Southern California’s massive Coachella, which went from one to two weekends in 2012. Prior to that, it added the country music festival Stagecoach in 2007, taking advantage of the infrastructure that was already in place for Coachella at the festival site at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

More recently, BottleRock Napa Valley announced that it would follow up its regular Memorial Day weekend festival with a two-day Latin music offering June 1-2 at the same site in 2024.

For this inaugural post-OSL Golden Gate Park concert, Another Planet is offering fans the rare chance to see System of a Down. The Grammy-winning SoCal rock band fronted by Serj Tankian has sold more than 40 million albums during a career that stretches back to the ’90s. The band is currently to make only one other performance in 2024, during their own sold-out Sick New World Festival in Las Vegas.

Deftones are also a sizable draw — and a local one at that. Formed in Sacramento in 1988, the Grammy-winning alt-rock act has released nine studio albums, the most recent of which is “Ohms” in 2020.

“We are expecting fans from not just the Bay Area but from across the US and internationally to travel to the city injecting money into the local economy,” Scott says. “From hotels to local restaurants and everything in between, this will be a great night of music and a great economic boost for the city.”

System of a Down, Deftones to Headline San Francisco Concert After Outside Lands

Please try again

A man screams into a microphone, while perched, hunched over, at the edge of a stage. Stage lights shine behind him.

Deftones, System of a Down and The Mars Volta will play in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this August, inaugurating a new annual event on the same site as the Outside Lands music festival.

The one-day concert will take place in Golden Gate Park’s Polo Fields on Aug. 17, 2024 for an audience of up to 65,000 people. The lineup also includes Swedish punks Viagra Boys and Australian industrial rockers VOWWS . The concert is expected to be the only West Coast date for System of a Down in 2024 outside of this month’s Sick New World festival in Las Vegas.

Presented by Another Planet Entertainment, which also produces Outside Lands, the single-stage concert will take place on the weekend following Outside Lands. The concert’s proximity to Outside Lands means it will utilize much of the infrastructure from the weekend before, not unlike the country music-oriented Stagecoach festival, which takes place in Indio on the weekend following Coachella, or Napa’s Latin-music themed Festival La Onda, which this year follows the BottleRock music festival.

Tickets for the festival are priced at $169 for general admission and $399 for VIP tickets plus fees. VIP guests will get expedited entry and have access to a closer views of the stage, lounges and upgraded bathrooms. Tickets officially go on sale on April 12, but Another Planet’s presale starts on April 11 at 10 a.m. using the presale code golden .

Deftones and VOWWS last appeared in San Francisco together at a sold-out show at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in April 2022 — a concert that was twice delayed by the COVID pandemic. Though Sacramento heroes Deftones are well-versed in playing for huge crowds at European festivals like Rock Am Ring and Reading/Leeds, this will be their biggest Bay Area concert to date.

The concert is the first to be produced under Another Planet’s newly formed Golden Gate Park Concerts banner. In September of 2023, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors approved additional concerts in Golden Gate Park , with the stipulation that Another Planet produce three free concerts at the Civic Center, Union Square and the Embarcadero. The city also granted Another Planet exclusive rights to producing ticketed concerts in Golden Gate Park.

“We are excited to be bringing such an iconic lineup to the city,” Allen Scott, Another Planet’s president of concerts and festivals, said in a statement. “We are expecting fans from not just the Bay Area but from across the US and internationally.”

How To Buy Tickets For System Of A Down And Deftones’ San Francisco Concert

Lexi Lane

Yesterday, System Of A Down announced that they’d be doing a one-day-only show in San Francisco alongside Deftones — making it a rocking lineup not to miss. Other bands like The Mars Volta, Viagra Boys, and Vowws will be joining them in Golden Gate Park on August 17.

Specifically, it will be held on the Polo Field and is going to run from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. as the first-ever “after dark” show to take place there, according to Consequence . It’s also a special occurrence, since System Of A Down’s only other show so far for 2024 is at Vegas’ Sick New World festival . Furthermore, Deftones are only playing at Coachella and Lollapalooza.

For those looking to go this summer, here’s what to know about securing tickets.

Tickets for System Of A Down and Deftones’ Golden Gate show will first be available in the artist pre-sales that open today (April 10) at 10 a.m. PT. Additional pre-sales — including for Live Nation, Another Planet Entertainment, and Ticketmaster — will open up on Thursday, April 11.

From there, the concert’s tickets will open to the general public on Friday, April 12 at the same time.

Additional information about the one-day-only concert can be found here .

System Of A Down and Deftones announce stacked one-night-only co-headline show

The two leading nu-metal-but-not-really bands will be joined by The Mars Volta, Viagra Boys and Vowws

System Of A Down and Deftones performing live in 2022

System Of A Down and Deftones have announced a standalone co-headline show.

The two beloved nu metal -era bands will perform at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California, on August 17.

It will be the first-ever night-time concert to take place at the outdoor park and garden.

Support will come from prog rockers The Mars Volta, Swedish punks Viagra Boys and US industrial rockers Vowws.

Tickets to the concert will go on sale on Friday (April 12) at 10am Pacific Time.

Deftones have confirmed that the System Of A Down co-headline concert will be a one-off, describing it on social media as “a standalone, once-in-a-lifetime event”.

System Of A Down and Deftones came to prominence during the ascent of nu metal in the late 1990s. However, both bands have rejected the genre tag.

In a 2017 interview with Metal Hammer , Deftones singer Chino Moreno revealed the band went as far as to refuse tours with Limp Bizkit and Korn to avoid being pigeonholed as a nu metal act.

“We did make a very conscious choice of who we were going to play shows with,” he said.

“It was hard to be this young band and having to turn down tours. I can’t remember how many times I turned down Korn! And they got pissed at us. Jonathan [Davis] would say, ‘Why do you hate us?’ and I didn’t know what to say.

“I’d tell him, ‘Dude, I don’t hate you. I love you guys, you’re my friends. But I don’t want to tour with you. I don’t want to be on the Family Values with you and Limp Bizkit.’

“The name of the genre was nu metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old. And I didn’t to be old with it.”

Similarly, System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian told Metal Hammer ’s Jon Weiderhorn in 1998: “When we write music, we try to do something different than even what we do.

“I’m serious. We want every new song to be done in a way we haven’t done before. We try to not sound like System Of A Down, let alone anyone else. That keeps us not only a step ahead, but a step ahead of ourselves.”

The Golden Gate Park concert is one of only two concerts System Of A Down have announced for 2024. The other is a headline slot at the Sick New World festival in Las Vegas on April 27.

Meanwhile, Deftones have several shows announced for the year. The full list is below and tickets are available via the band’s website .

Deftones Finally Share New Album Release Date in 2024

Deftones Finally Shares New Album Release Date in 2024

Deftones finally shares a new album release date in the Spring or Summer of 2024. This article collected the latest interviews and details about Deftones ‘ upcoming tenth studio album.

After, the Deftones ‘ latest studio album, Ohms , was released in 2020. But it appears the band is already working on their next album. On the Gnostic Academy podcast YouTube channel , guitarist Stephen Carpenter said that the band is working on a new album with producer Nick Raskulinecz, with a release date 2024.

“ Ohms ” is the ninth album released by American alternative metal band Deftones via Reprise Records on September 20, 2020. Terry Date wrote the album, marking their first collaboration since the release of Eros and their final album with bassist Sergio Vega, who left the band at the beginning of 2021.

Deftones also announced they will return to their Dia De Los Deftones event this year. Turnstile, Phantogram, Freddie Gibbs, Audrey, Destroy Boys, Provoker, and Cold Gawd will perform at the event on November 5 in San Diego, CA.

Deftones album covers

During this interview, Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter talked about the specific time for the new Deftones album :

When is the release date of Deftones’ new album?

“Just in the last couple of months, really – two or three months; well, maybe a little longer now, really; February is when we started … to work on new material for a new record. It’s going good now. It was a little slow at first, but it always is; dragging our feet ain’t nothing new. But we’ve got stuff up and going now, and we’re on a good little momentum at the moment. And we hope to have it all done and out by next spring or summer [ 2024 ]. There’s nothing official – no official date yet – but that’s our goal.

Stephen Carpenter also talked about how Deftones produce their song:

It’s a combination of things. Most often, everything stems from us just jamming out some ideas, messing around, and someone comes up with something that maybe someone else or everyone else likes. And then we kind of just focus in on that for a little bit.

Who is the new person and it’s going to affect good on Deftones?

That’s what Nick’s great at doing, too. Where we could just sit and jam aimlessly and plow through idea after idea without even stopping to recognize them, he’s great at saying, ‘Hey, that idea is really cool. Let’s try to work on that for a minute. And then that other idea might be really cool with that one. Let’s try putting them together,’ and stuff like that. So that’s what’s awesome about him. He’s like an unofficial band member at that point and good at giving us direction where we don’t normally do that well on our own. I mean, we do it, but it’s a much slower process on our own.”

Deftones ‘ new album will be the band’s first without bassist Sergio Vega, who performed on the previous four albums until leaving the band in 2021. Deftones live fill-in Fred Sablan, although the band has never confirmed a formal successor for Vega.

In addition, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno working on another project ††† (Crosses) . Also, the new album called God Bless, I Love U, Delete will be released on October 13th, 2023.

Steven Tyler, Aerosmith announce rescheduled farewell concert tour: New dates and ticket info

Aerosmith will be back in the saddle again this fall.

The veteran rockers, who postponed their Peace Out farewell tour after only a few shows in September, will return for a 40-date run starting Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh. The tour wraps Feb. 26, 2025 in Buffalo, NY.

The bulk of the dates are rescheduled, but the band added three cities: Pittsburgh, Orlando and Philadelphia, where their goodbye run kicked off last September.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates, while tickets for the new shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time April 12 via ticketmaster.com . For those who previously purchased tickets and cannot attend the rescheduled concerts, refunds will be available at point of purchase. A series of VIP packages are also available at aerosmith.com/VIP.

As with the original dates, The Black Crowes will open for Aerosmith.

More: Aerosmith Peace Out: See the setlist for the iconic band's farewell tour

Why did Aerosmith postpone their farewell tour?

After playing only a handful of concerts in September, the “Walk This Way” heroes had to hit pause after singer Steven Tyler damaged his vocal cords. He also fractured his larynx and was given doctor’s orders not to sing for 30 days.

But Aerosmith opted to give Tyler ample time to recuperate and scuttle all of their shows until 2024.

The wiry frontman known for his searing rock yowls, said at the time that the injury occurred at a Sept. 10 show in New York and that the vocal cord damage “led to subsequent bleeding.”

What songs can fans expect to hear at Aerosmith’s farewell shows?

USA TODAY was there for opening night of the Peace Out tour Sept. 3 in Philadelphia. As the tour is also a celebration of the band’s 50 years in the music industry, the setlist reflected their vast catalog.

The band – Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry, bassist Tom Hamilton and guitarist Brad Whitford, along with drummer John Douglas filling in for Joey Kramer – sounded in peak form for their deserved victory lap.

Songs ranged from singalong rock smashes “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Rag Doll” to the rarely played album track “Adam’s Apple” and a dip into Aerosmith’s blues roots with “Hangman Jury.”
