Dooars in monsoon...... A gem yet to explore

We visited Dooars in monsoon, when all the jungles are closed except Medla. One will be astonished to see the various shades of greeneries. As it is off season, and nearly zero crowded, we saw the wild animals very easily from Medla watch tower. It was a nice experience to see Dooars in this season.

dooars tour in monsoon

this is my first review of dooars in tripadvisor, although I have visited this place couple of times. I will share a few real life experience which I feel will help you when you travel. 1) avoid going dooars in monsoon. If you go then avoid leeches, leep salt and knifes. Wear high ankle water proof shoes. 2) try the elephant safari at a very early morning which will take you to the river side. You may find several animals came to the river bank to have salt and water.

Bengal, the land of plentiful. One of the most unexplored stays in the country. It's one of the few states which can boast of having mountains as well as the sea. Just rising before the mountains lies the region of dooars. The first thought one gets off the region is that of forest. Yes dooars do have plentiful of forest land but the area is totally not about forest only. For example sunthalikola. Forested area with a stream flowing by or Murti. Bungalow then Murti river then dense forest. Then the second aspect. Dooars boasts of large tea gardens as well. Coming back to forest the main attractions. The forest of dooars have loads to offer in terms of flora and fauna. Jungle safaries takes you deep inside the first where we encountered a herd elephants crossing of path. Bison can be spotted in close proximity but be safe and don't use flash in taking pictures. High point is the elephant safari which would take you deep and right beside the rhino and Bison. Cheetah are inhabitants but we could spot none. Best time to visit October to March. Come explore Beautiful Bengal.

Swarnab Dutta

  • June 23, 2023

Apart from the several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, Dooars is also home to several quiet hamlets and scenic attractions that are worth visiting.

While staying at the Banani Tourist Lodge in Murti, we planned the seven points Dooars tour that cover most of the Dooars region of West Bengal. It is a 1-day tour that covers 7 beautiful attractions and provides you with mesmerizing views of the region along the way.

In this article, you will get to know about the Dooars’ seven points sightseeing trip from Murti. It will include places like,

  • Samsing (Shyamsing)
  • Suntalekhola
  • Rocky island

Let’s see each of these places in detail.

We started our trip from Murti WBFDC Banani Resort in the morning, around 9 AM. Our first stop was Samsing.

1. Samsing (Shyamsing)

Samsing is a quaint village known as the “Queen of Dooars”, located in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.

Elevated at 3000 feet, this place is endowed with beautiful orange orchards, rich rolling tea gardens, forests, and different vegetation, all enveloped by wild hills.

It’s a place that seems like a photograph with rivers and mountains ruling the sites. A lot is there to be seen and felt!

You can visit the Samsing viewpoint, which gives you mesmerizing views of nature. You can also have a picnic on the bank of the Murti River, flowing through the village.

After spending some time here, we went to our next stop, Suntalekhola.

2. Suntalekhola

Also called Suntaley Khola, the enchanting village lies in the district of Kalimpong , West Bengal. The serenity and scenic nature wrap around the whole place. The name Suntalekhola means “orange stream” in the local language, as the area is known for its orange and cardamom plantations.

Here you can get to experience adventures through trekking, hiking through the trails, and go splashing in the cool flowing river. You can also choose to stay in cozy homestays, forest bungalows, or jungle camps.

When you reach there, you will have to leave your car and take a local jeep to explore the local attraction. These attractions include the hanging bridge, a small dam, and a few other spots. We choose to only visit the Hanging Bridge. It was a scenic spot to spend some time amidst nature. You can also walk to the Hanging Bridge but is not recommended.

We then returned to the location where we left our car, had some tea at the local shop, and then started to our next destination, Rocky Island.

3. Rocky Island

This is a relatively new spot for tourists and nature lovers. Here, you can enjoy the serene beauty of the Murti River and the lush greenery of the surrounding forests, with the melodious sounds of various birds. The sound of the flowing river is very soothing along with the gushing cool breeze.

You can also indulge in some adventurous activities like rock climbing, trekking, and rappelling on the rocky slopes. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can camp in the wilderness and explore the rich biodiversity of the Neora Valley National Sanctuary, which is home to many rare and endangered species.

You can learn more about Rocky Island in the article: Rocky Island (Kalimpong) .

From Rocky Island, we started our journey toward Bindu. We also had our lunch at a restaurant on the way.

This is a picturesque village that houses the second oldest dam in India, which is part of a hydroelectric plant on the Jaldhaka River.

Located at the border of India and Bhutan, the place is famous for its enchanting natural beauty. It is a realm of nature where the misty clouds descend to meet the earth covered with verdant forests. Laden with captivating sights, the village greets you with sincere hospitality.

You can also shop for Bhutanese chocolates, curios, shawls, and apricot wine from the small market set up by the locals.

After some shopping and spending time near the Bhutan border, we started out journey back towards Dooars. While returning we stopped at Jhalong.

Nestled in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, the secluded village is famous for its cardamom plantation and hydroelectric project.

The hill station showcases some amazing places along with some good adventurous experiences amidst nature. Witness some of the incredible landscapes and breathe in all the wild environments. Staying in a tent under the starry night sky is a spectacular view to look at. You can also enjoy bird watching, angling, and trekking in Jhalong.

It is also a hub of cultural diversity as it hosts the largest marketplace in the area, where villagers from different communities and even from Bhutan come to sell their products.

Jhalong is a lesser-known hill station of the Dooars region making it an ideal place to spend some lone time within nature.

We then returned back to Murti. Let me tell you a few points about Murti, the place where we were staying.

Murti is a scenic hamlet situated beside the Murti River that flows through Dooars. Placed perfectly in the woodlands, the extremely beautiful place attracts nature enthusiasts from all around.

Murti offers many activities for the visitors, such as bathing in the river, birdwatching, angling, and exploring the nearby wildlife sanctuaries of Gorumara and Chapramari. Camping along the river stream under the starry night sky is a spectacular view to look at. You can also just sit beside the river and experience the serenity of the place.

In this place, you can find a range of accommodation options, from government resorts to private lodges, where you can relax and admire the views of nature.

There is another spot in Dooars that we missed as we didn’t have enough time. Its Lalliguras.

7. Laliguras

Laliguras is a picturesque picnic spot situated near Samsing that is furnished with landscapes of tea gardens, forests, flowing rivers, and hills. It is located along the Murti River valley, offering a stunning view of the blue water and the green hills. The stretching meadows and the surrounding topography are worth looking into.

You can also enjoy the view of the Murti River flowing through the valley and spot some rare migratory birds in winter. Laliguras is a popular viewpoint of Dooars, where you can admire the beauty of nature and relax in the serene ambiance. Laliguras looks gorgeous during the monsoon when the river flows at its full strength.

These are some places you can visit as part of the Dooars 7-point sightseeing tour in one day.

It can cost you Rs. 2200 – 3000 per car for this tour, depending on the season and the type of car you choose. You can also have a decent lunch within Rs. 200 per person at any restaurant on the way to Bindu.

So if you are visiting Dooars, make sure to go on sightseeing and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Dooars Tour

The Himalayan Foothills of North Bengal are known as Dooars. The forests, tea gardens, undulating plains, and people of different cultures and ethnicity; all create a heady brew that has made Dooars one of the most fascinating tourist destinations in Eastern India.

The name Dooars is said to have been derived from the word Door in English or ‘Dwar’ in local languages. There are 18 entry points or Doors to Bhutan from the Dooars area. The most famous is the main connecting road of Bhutan with India through Phuentsholing – Jaigaon border.

Best Time to Visit

October to march, june to september, april and may of  dooars, getting there.

Bagdogra is the nearest Airport and NJP is the major railhead. Both are on the outskirts of Siliguri town which is the transit hub for the entire region. However, there are several train stations within Dooars including Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Hasimara and Malbazar. All trains travelling to North East of India have to pass through Dooars and stop at one or the other of these stations.

People and Culture

Tribal culture with its folk dance, drama, songs and folklore is an integral part of the culture of the region. The tribal communities of Raj Bangshi, Mech, Rava, Toto, Limboo, Lepcha and the Bengali and Nepali communities populate the region and provide a rich flavour to the rich cultural diversity of Dooars. Dooars were covered with thick forests and the tribal people lived an isolated existence until the British invaded their space, followed by the Bangladeshis; the British cleared the land for tea estates while the Bengali people after the partition of Bangladesh came here and were actively involved in agriculture. The British were also responsible for bringing another set of tribes called the Madeshia, Uraons, Munda and Nageshia from Chotanagpur to work in the plantations; these tribes since have lived in harmony with the other communities of North Bengal. The majority of people in Dooars belong to the Bengali community followed by the Rajbangshi tribe. Many festivals among the Bengali community and Rajbangshi are similar like the Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Manosha Puja etc. On the occasion of Manosha Puja – worship of the serpent Goddess – village fairs, dramas and festivals are held and villagers pray for good crops. The folk drama of Dooars includes the ‘chor chunni’ and ‘Dham gaan’ is a popular folk song. Rajbangshi’s most popular songs are the ‘Bhawaiya Gaan’ – devotional and love songs – which are very famous in Bengal.

The Dooars or Duars are the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in North-East India around Bhutan. Duar means 'door' and the region forms the gateway to Bhutan from India. There are 18 passages or gateways through which the Bhutanese people can communicate with the people living in the plains. Dooars is synonymous with the term Terai used in Nepal and northern India and form the only nitrate rich plain in India. The Dooars region politically constitutes the plains of Darjeeling Himalayas, the whole of Jalpaiguri district and Alipurduar district. The altitude of Dooars area ranges from 90 to 1,750 m. Innumerable streams and rivers flow through these fertile plains from the mountains of Bhutan. The major river is the Teesta besides many others like the Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa, Sankosh, Dyna, Karatoya, Raidak, and Kaljani rivers, among others. Monsoon generally starts from the middle of May and continues till the end of September. Winters are cold with foggy mornings and nights. Summer is mild and constitutes a very short period of the year. Dooars is the ideal place in Bengal for monsoon travelling. The economy of Dooars is based on three "T"s - Tea, Tourism and Timber. Several people are also engaged in the cultivation of betel nuts which contributes to the economy. Cultivation of other crops is done mainly for local consumption. The area is dotted by several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries which attract a lot of tourists from all over India and abroad, making it an important contributor to the economy and also employer of a number of people. The timber industry, flourishes in this region. A number of saw mills, plywood industries and other allied business also act as an important contributor to the economy. Dooars act as a doorway to Bhutan; thus, export-import industry also flourishes in the area. The towns of Jaigaon, Siliguri and Phuntsholing are important hubs of the export-import industry.

Dooars: All Info, Suggested Tour Itineraries and Best Places to Stay

Dooars as a tourism destination.

The Dooars is situated at the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya mountain range. It is a magnificent region full of green hills and valley, jungle, rivers and tea plantations. The origin of the name comes from the Bengali word “Duar” which means door or gateway.

This vast region acts as a doorway to major Himalayan Wildlife habitats. It also functions as the gateway to the hills in India and Bhutan. It is the home of many exotic species and rich in the exquisite natural beauty. Major rivers like Teesta, Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa etc. flow through this nitrate-rich valley.

The three “T”- Tourism, Tea and Timber plays the role of most important economic factors in this area. The winter is chilly and the summer weather is pleasing. When the weather is clear, blue sky and green jungle welcome you to this piece of paradise in North Bengal.

Different Parts and Places of Dooars:

Dooars is a region full of diversity. With its huge area, the landscape, weather and beauty changes frequently from one place to the other. Tourists flock to this region to enjoy the beauty of the hills, rivers and forests. Winter temperature falls rapidly here, and the summer is soothing.

The rain is abundant; the trees grow to their full potential and length, forming a canopy. The good condition of the roads makes it one of the best monsoon destination in the state too. The ecstatic beauty of the eye-soothing verdure forest and the sweet song of the birds will provide you with the inner peace and calmness you seek after a tiring urban life.

Dooars tourism highlights and takes pride in the majestic mountains, various flora and fauna, tea gardens, perennial and lively springs, sandy river shores and the wide patches of grassland. There are several colonial-era heritage buildings in this area, especially near the tea-gardens.

Located in the prime spots, they provide an enchanting view over the surrounding area of gardens, hills and river bed. If you are driven by wanderlust, Dooars is a must-visit place for you.

After a day of visiting the major sightseeing points, relax under the starry sky in front of a bonfire, or watch the sunrise from the balcony of your room with a cup of tea in your hand- Dooars offers you numerous choices.

You can go to the tourist-favourite places, or explore the less-crowded options, which are unspoilt and nature is in their full glory.

Dooars Wildlife

If your passion is to explore wildlife and take the pictures in their natural habitat, Dooars forests are the perfect place for you. There are many places of interest in Dooars to visit for enjoying the wild beauty. The major forest areas in this region are Jaldapara and Gorumara National Park, and Buxa tiger reserve.

These places are rich in wildlife.

You can easily find the mighty rhino and elephants in here when you take part in the salaries. The jeep safaris are faster, and the elephant safari can take you close to the wild animals. The other common animal and birds include deer, python, turtle, peacocks, Drongo, Indian pied hornbill, etc.

There are several watch-towers placed inside the forest core area. You can watch wildlife without disturbing them from there. You would need prior permission from the forest department for this experience though. Coupled with the salt pits, these places offer a great chance to see the herds of the majestic animals.

If you prefer seclusion and beauty, tourism in Jayanti forest and hill area will be the perfect choice for you. Part of Buxa tiger reserve, the place with the view of Bhutan hills and the beautiful stream, is famous as the “Queen of the Dooars.”

Dooars Weather and Temperature

Weather and temperature across the year in dooars:.

The weather in Dooars is pleasant throughout the year. In summer the temperature does not go above 26°C, which is relatively less than the surrounding areas. In winter, it goes down to 2-3°C but does not touch the freezing point in general.

As the place is at the mountain foothills, it experiences longer monsoon though.  For these favourable weather condition, the forest canopy grows very fast and the hills often stay green.

In the table below, we can get a basic idea of the temperature throughout the year

Dooars-weather-and-temperature

From the month of October to February, it is winter in the Dooars. The temperature goes down gradually and when the sun comes out- the weather becomes pleasant.

Chapramari-Wildlife-Sanctuary-Dooars-in-Foggy-Winter-Morning

With the progress of winter, the mercury may drop near the freezing point, but snow is very uncommon in this area. Generally, the temperature hovers around 5 – 20°C. This pleasant weather is the perfect time for local festivals like the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival between November and December.

The season begins in June with sporadic rains, but July is the true beginning of the monsoon season in here. It lasts till September, sometimes early October.

Samsing-Dooars-in-Monsoon

The average rainfall here varies between 35 – 50 cm. Between July and August, it rains cats and dogs in this region. The rivers run beyond capacity and the barrages often overload. This time of the year is the breeding season of the animals, so most of the sanctuaries remain closed between mid-June and mid-September.

The season begins in March and continues until early June. The temperature ranges from 20 to 35°C. The morning and evening are very pleasant, but the noon and early afternoon hours face scorching heat, especially near the sandy riverbeds.

Tea-Garden-in-Dooars-in-Summer-Morning

The grassland withers, the rise in the heat and humidity level become uncomfortable for the tourists. This season has a relatively better chance of wildlife sighting owing to a less amount of greenery.

Best Time to Visit Dooars

The best time to visit Dooars is in the winter seasons. This time the weather is pleasant and perfect for enjoying the jungle safaris. As monsoon just ends, the rain transforms the forest into a green paradise and the rivers run full to the brim. The weather remains pleasantly cool during the day and cold in the night. Therefore travellers consider winter to be the best time to explore the sanctuaries and enjoy the jungle safaris.

How to Reach Dooars

The monsoon is not the most favourite time for general tourists. However, for the romantic, off-beat travellers and the adrenaline-freaks, it is a great time to come and experience the rain-soaked forest life. The roads are in comparatively good condition which makes it a major monsoon travel destination in West Bengal.

Except for the peak season, summer is a good time to visit and enjoy the beauty too, if you are ready to brave the heat and humidity in the noon.

"India's gateway to Bhutan."

Dooars tourism.

Starting from river Teesta in the East to river Sankoshi in the west, Dooars is a local name given to the floodplains of North-East India around Bhutan. The name 'Dooars' has emerged from 'door' as Dooars is the gateway to Bhutan.

Dooars comprises of several towns and districts in this region including Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Siliguri , etc. Geographically, Dooars is blessed with such brilliance in its relief, imagine, the mighty range of mountains of the Eastern Himalayas in the backdrop, a band of thick forests, rich in species of Flora and Fauna, continued with tea gardens, and cut here and there by water body. Somewhere in the middle of all this is Dooars. The gateway you wouldn't want to cross heartlessly.

Monsoon & Jaldapara : Jungle Safari in the month of May-June

safari-vehicle-jaldapara-national-park

Is it really worthwhile to visit Jaldapara in the month of May-June?

I will narrate my experience about Jungle Safaris in the month of May-June when the rainy season is knocking at the door. The blog focus on Jaldapara National Park but I have jotted down my thoughts below based on my experiences during jungle safaris in the forests of Dooars in month May-June.

Route map of Jaldapara Safari :

At Jaldapara National Park Jeep Safari is operated from two gates-

  • Madarihat Gate.
  • Salkumar Gate.

The safari vehicle goes through the forests and grasslands and there are three stopovers-

  • Harindanga Watchtower.
  • Jaldapara Watchtower.

Tourists can get down of the vehicle at the above spots and enjoy wildlife sightings from the watchtower. Otherwise, it is not allowed to get down in foot in the park during the safari.

Jaldapara Safari Begins :

I reserved Jeep Safari for the last slot. Safari is for 1 and ½ hr (from 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm). At 4.00 pm, it was already very dark and the light was dying out. (From 1st May 2019 Jungle Safari duration has been reduced from 2hr to 1 and 1/2 hr).

Our first stopover was at Hollong Bungalow, a female gaur was busy licking at the salt-leak. The jungle in the backdrop was lush green.

We headed for Harindanga Watchtower. The habitat around Harindanga primarily consists of grassland. “Harin” in Bengali means “Deer”. As the name suggests, this watchtower is known for deer sightings. We were not disappointed. There were two Hog Deer’s resting at about 100 meters from the tower. It gets its name from the hog-like manner in which it runs through the forests with its head hung low so that it can duck under obstacles instead of leaping over them like most other deer. The species is Endangered as per IUCN.

After Harindanga we drove towards Jaldapara Watchtower. As we were about to reach Jaldapara Tower, a female Sambar Deer was peeping out its head from the bushes. There is a salt leak at the watchtower. This watchtower is frequented by Wild Boars.

Recently 15 Sambar Deer’s were relocated to Buxa Tiger Reserve from Jaldapara National Park, to provide enough ample food for the Tigers to be released at Buxa.

As we left from Jaldapara Watchtower it started to drizzle. We put on the soft hood of the gypsy to escape from the rain. All gypsy vehicles are provided with soft hoods.

Pros of Monsoon Safari :

  • The popular belief is that during monsoons sightings are less but guides and naturalists at Jaldapara have a different version. Contrary to the popular belief, they believe that leopards and other wild animals walk more on the roads (due to long grass) during monsoon and also since the scent gets washed away, they roam around scent marking more often during monsoon.
  • Jungle lives during monsoon. The beauty of the jungle during monsoon is indescribable in words. And if you are one of those who doesn’t mind getting a bit wet in order to witness nature at its best time to visit Jaldapara National Park.
  • Lush green background gives a soothing tonality to the photographs.
  • Monsoon time it the mating/breeding time of most of the wild animals/birds and provides the opportunity to capture love-making moments of wild animals.

Cons of Monsoon Safari :

  • As the grass becomes long and the forest is absolutely green, it becomes difficult to spot wildlife, if they are deep inside the jungle.
