In fact, these valleys have been inhabited since Paleolithic times and the cave paintings at Lascaux are among the world’s most celebrated. Along with the region’s scenic countryside, reputation for fine French gastronomy and relaxed pace of life, it makes the Dordogne worthy of your time. Our specialists have explored the main sights and the lesser-known ones, and they’ll carefully plan your trip to the Dordogne as an individual tailor-made experience to match your preferences.

Whether you’re on the trail of fine wines and local produce, interested in the prehistoric art of Rouffignac and Pech-Merle, intrigued by troglodyte villages or Renaissance-era chateaux, our specialists can help you plan your trip, using their first-hand knowledge to guide you on the best places to see in the Dordogne. "Jean brought history alive, yes, even history dating back 35,000 years" - Dolores M, Pennsylvania

"We could not have had a better guide" - GGNZ12, New Zealand

Very knowledgeable guide brings history to life "Our four days with Jean were the highlight of our trip to France. Jean guided us to the most fascinating places in the Sarlat region and breathed life into the Middle Ages. Not only is she an excellent guide, but also she is a simply delightful travel companion. I wish we could do the whole trip again!" lizzie88Colorado

Fantastic Guide and Teacher "She was incredibly helpful in narrowing down what we should see and adding some sights that we had not thought of. As a result of her deep knowledge and obvious love of the area and its history, she was able to explain everything we saw and put it into the broader perspective of history. So she was not just a great guide but a thoughtful teacher." Dobson W, Minnesota

Unforgettable Perigord Noir "Perfect. She set up an itinerary for us which turned out to be the highlight of our trip. She is a kindred soul, easy going personality and an excellent history teller. We highly recommend Jean, she made our short stay an unforgettable one. We would not have seen so much of the Perigord Noir area if it wasn’t for Jean’s love for the place." Angela G.

My name is Jean Laroche and I come from New Zealand. I have lived in this part of France with my French husband and family for more than 20 years. When I first arrived I was blown away by the beauty of the region. I loved the delicate red poppies which pushed their way out of the cracks in the stone walls at springtime and the stark silhouettes cut out by the medieval fortresses strategically placed high above the river valleys so many centuries ago. The luscious green countryside reminded me of my home in rural New Zealand but with the added marks of centuries of civilization. I learnt French and, being naturally curious learnt about the people and explored the place they call the “Périgord Noir” (the south eastern part of the Dordogne). I discovered that prehistoric man had been equally attracted here, well before me, but probably more by the generous nature and safe shelter provided by the ledges and caves in the limestone valley walls than by poppies coming out of cracks. Come and let me share my knowledge and the insight I have acquired into the regional culture with you. I'll help you discover the historic sites, the natural beauty and the hidden treasures off the beaten path. I'll pick you up at your hotel, your bed and breakfast or holiday home and guide you to do either one of my preplanned circuits or through a circuit which we have tailor-made together according to your wishes.

Our tours are all for a full day (9am-6pm) with pick up and drop off at your accommodation in the region. Contact us for a quote.

Dordogne & Périgord

..castles, gastronomy and prehistoric sites, the medieval beauty and iconic food.

Périgord is not as renowned as some French regions, yet it has much to offer travellers looking for both culture and luxury. Our bespoke Perigord and Dordogne holidays are quite tempting for those looking for a mix of culture , history, castles and rich gastronomy . This charming French region, rich with countryside and green spaces, also affords opportunities for great walks and bicycles rides as well as some easy kayak explorations.

Boasting the world-famous Lascaux Caves , Dordogne is one of the world’s most important spots for discovering prehistoric art and culture ; it is also renowned for its flavourful and authentic local French cuisine: think goat’s cheese , duck and foie gras . It is the true touristic and cultural hub of the southwest.

From Sarlat, you can stroll along secondary roads lined with charming villages, prehistoric sites (including the impressive Grotte de Lascaux that no one should miss), and medieval fortresses .

Next, a complete tour of the region will have you wind through a hilly and undulating landscape : a perfect mirror of quintessential France, with its soft green meadows and vineyards hugging romantic chateaux , farms and bastides (fortified hilltop villages). To the East, ancient caves and rock shelters conceal Europe’s best treasure trove of prehistoric art.

You're dreaming of …

Tasting typical french cuisine & fine wines....

Périgord just as Dordogne is a real paradise for foodies. You can find a wide range of local specialities to taste all of which are certain to regale you: from the well-known duck or goose foie gras to black truffles omelette, confit d’oie and traditional walnut pie.

With extensive oak woodlands covering the region, Périgord truffles grow abundantly in the area and bring a unique flavour to any meal. Also make sure to try the chestnuts and walnuts , which have been awarded their own AOC label, and Périgord strawberries.

Vineyard wise, the region counts numerous high-quality wines , from solid and respected “appellations” such as Bergerac , Pécharmant and Montbazillac. Less well-known than its neighbours in nearby Bordeaux , these fine wines won’t be disappointing to taste and enjoy.

Following the tracks of cavemen...

With the largest number of Prehistoric remains in Europe, Périgord is a region full of caves , shelters, cave paintings , engravings and sculptures. The incredible Palaeolithic-era caves at Lascaux will not fail to take your breath away – and will take you back to humanity’s origins , tens of thousands of years ago . Mostly depicting large animals that were native to the region during the Ice Age, the paintings are an experience every traveler to France should see at least once.

The region offers a plethora of magical sights teeming with history, notably the prehistoric caves in the Vézère valley, which prove that man has been present in the Dordogne for the past 450,000 years . Our distant ancestors indeed settled in the natural shelters the Dordogne and Vézère rivers hollowed in the limestone cliffs over the millennia.

They lived , worked , worshiped , painted, died and were buried in the many caves in the area. They left the marks of their extraordinary and surprising culture on the walls of their caves, so unsurprisingly, the beautiful and untamed Vézere Valley is listed a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the wonders of Lascaux, les Eyzies, and many more.

Exploring scenic rivers and nature...

Abounding in gorgeous rivers, any traveler looking for a water-centric adventure will not be disappointed by a trip to the Dordogne and Perigord. You can easily rent a canoe-kayak , take a barge downstream for a day of relaxed exploration, fish in the river or simply swim .

The Dordogne River that meanders through the region is the only river in France to be part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, a prestigious recognition for an environment of exceptional quality. Overall, the region is recognized for its outstanding natural beauty and will be a dream for anybody seeking peace and inspiring scenery. From the Vézère and the l’Isle to the Dronne and the l’Auvézère, there are so many rivers to enjoy– so go find your favourite.

The Dordogne is one of France’s main region for  canoeing and kayaking , offering umpteen first-class sights within a stone’s throw of the water. Set off in kayaks to discover in Périgord Noir, the stunning landscapes between Montignac-Lascaux and Les Eyzies de Tayac. Travel along the ancestral route down the river, between towering cliffs , castles, cave villages , and prehistoric sites in the heart of the valley that was so prominent in prehistoric times. An unforgettable experience to unwind and appreciate the wonderful surroundings at your own pace.

Wandering around open-air markets...

Saturday morning markets in the deliciously small and provincial old Roman town of Périgueux will make you realize how serious a business food is in this tiny capital. In Périgord, the cuisine is glorious : from seasonal local produce to duck , goose and and one of the most luxuriant foods known to mankind, black truffles , the is truly a gourmet’s paradise. For a food-centric traveler, what could be dreamier than having a local producer hand-pick the best f oie gras , Bergerac wine or Cabécou goat’s cheese for you? There’s also the possibility of having a local expert take you on a bespoke food tour of the region: a surefire way to home in on the best products and meet local artisans.

Read On: How To Include Picturesque Markets in Our Private Tours

Inspecting the four Périgords...

Périgord is divided into four areas : black, white, green and purple. Each of them has historical and natural reasons behind its name.

In the south-east, there is Black Périgord. It is known for its stunning medieval castles and architecture with dark colors and is much loved by locals and tourists. The oak forests are so numerous they make the whole area seem mystical and obscure.

Green Périgord is situated in the northern area and is known for its countless rivers , lakes, ponds and forests . Because it is so humid- there greenery is everywhere, thus the name.

White Périgord, the central part, is known as the administrative and economical centre of the region. The buildings and the flooring is often of light tones , as well as the rocky cliffs with limestone that give it the overall impression of white.

Purple Périgord is situated in the south-west and is known for the famous Bergerac vineyard , the color in autumn of which gave the name to the area. It is also famous for the English and French fortresses that remind us of The Hundred Years’ War .

A vast complex of caves near Montignac, Lascaux features over 600 wall paintings said to date back 17,000 years and was rightfully inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979 as part of the ‘Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley’. This extraordinarily well-preserved cave and its paintings are now protected however an impressive visitor center and replica caves have been developed to educate tourists and scientists from around the world. This unique discovery, a true look back in time, is one of the most fascinating experiences in the region so we’d definitely recommend including it in your itinerary if you’re touring in Dordogne. To start planning your tailor-made tour simply click ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

Get up close and personal with some medieval weaponry with a visit to the Chateau de Castelnaud. Initially erected as opposition to the Chateau de Beynac, Chateau de Castelnaud is a medieval fortress overlooking to Dordogne River.

The castle has had a ferocious history, from the 100 years War where it faced numerous hard-fought battles to its eventual abandonment before the French Revolution, which still enthralls visitors today with stories, tales, and weaponry from its height.

Include Chateau de Castelnaud in your itinerary today by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

Les Jardins de Marqueyssac is one of the most beautiful romantic gardens in all of France, perched above the Dordogne River and with stunning panoramic views across the valley. Flowing paths and winding hidden maze entertain you as you peacefully glide through the grand gardens and up to the 17th-century château.

For those with mobility issues, don’t worry: the provision of a buggy to navigate through the gardens and to the top of the property means no one needs to miss out on its spectacular views. Include Les Jardins de Marqueyssac in your itinerary by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

Visit the hightop commune of Rocamadour is an incredible day trip for any curious traveler looking for a journey back in time; with a lineage dating back to the Bronze Age.

The town has attracted many a visitor with its beautiful setting, historical monuments, and sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary which attracts many pilgrims from across the world.

Explore the impressive history of this stunning town with your own private guide by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

A stunning manor house in the commune of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle close to the Chateau de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, the Chateau des Milandes served as a home for the lords of Caumont who preferred the elegant house and gardens to the cold, war-torn fortress.

Built in 1489, the manor house became home to the American singer and dancer after her rise to the pinnacle of the Parisian cabaret scene in the 1920s. Baker also played a covert role in the French Resistance and is beloved in the area, and France generally; the castle now stands as a dedication to her life. Include a tour of Chateau des Milandes in your itinerary by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

One of the best known and best-preserved medieval castles in the region, Chateau de Beynac is situated almost precariously in the commune of Beynac-et-Cazenac, in Dordogne.

The castle was initially built in the 12th-century atop sheer cliffs to provide a natural defense; a decision which seems ingenious with the hindsight of the many battles the structure has borne witness since.

While it’s a steep hike to the top, the views of the surrounding towns and valley are certainly worth the effort; include Chateau de Beynac in your private tour itinerary by clicking below.

Collonges-la-Rouge

Proclaimed as ‘The Most Beautiful Village of France’ Collonges-la-Rouge is a must-see for anyone on tour in the area. The village is built almost entirely with distinctive red sandstone – dating back to the 8th century – most of which are still standing today, and attract visitors from across the world.

One of our favorite parts of the village would have to be its traditional fresh marketplaces, offering visitors a glimpse back to a simpler (and in this case prettier) time. Get in touch today to start planning your tour of France by clicking ‘Create My Custom Tour’ below.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

I fell in love with the Dordogne on my week-long visit last year to France. It’s a region that took me by surprise and enchanted me with historic villages and charming chateau. This guide to visiting The Dordogne is all of my favorites from my trip.

The Dordogne is a region often overlooked by American tourists, perhaps because many consider visiting other regions of France first like Provence or Normandy. But the Dordogne should not be skipped, it’s an incredible place of history, grand landscape, and lots to do. It makes for a wonderful destination after Bordeaux as this is the closest major city.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

For me, this region is quintessential France. It has it all and you can easily spend a proper week or so road-tripping the region. With its rich history, natural beauty, and gastronomic treasures, the Dordogne continues to be a celebrated destination that offers a truly immersive French experience.

Why is the Dordogne Famous?

dordogne france tours

The Dordogne region in France is famous for its captivating blend of prehistoric heritage, medieval charm, and culinary excellence. I know travelers come to explore the renowned Lascaux Caves, stroll through picturesque villages like Sarlat-la-Canéda , and savor the region’s iconic cuisine.

If you’re considering your time in the Dordogne, read on for how to spend your time, where to stay, and more in the Dordogne.

Short on Time? Here Are My Top Picks for the Best Hotels in the Dordogne:

  • Le Petit Manoir , for best historic, luxury stay in Sarlat
  • Hotel Montaigne , for the best modern stay in Sarlat
  • Domaine de Rochebois , for the best luxury countryside retreat

For more on how to make the most of your time, don’t miss my in-depth guide to Sarlat-la-Canéda !

A Guide to the Best Things to Do in the Dordogne

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

Helpful Travel Tips for Visiting Dordogne France

Getting there.

To reach the Dordogne Valley, you can fly into Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport, which is the closest major airport to the region. From there, you can rent a car and drive east to the picturesque Dordogne Valley. Bordeaux to the Dordogne Valley is approximately a 2 to 2.5-hour drive, depending on your specific destination within the Dordogne region. Having a car is an absolute must for visiting, I always use Discover Cars for the best rates.

Length of Time

I think 5-7 days is the right amount of time for exploring the Dordogne. You can’t do it all in a week but you would get a good sense of the area. It’s quite vast, the third largest area in France, so keep this in mind.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

Time of Year

The best time to visit the Dordogne region in France is during the spring and early autumn. April to June and September to October offer pleasant weather with mild temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities. These months also tend to be less crowded with tourists compared to the peak summer season. However, if you enjoy warmer weather and don’t mind larger crowds, July and August are also popular months for visiting the Dordogne.

Where to Stay in The Dordogne to Visit

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

One of the most challenging parts of planning a trip to The Dordogne is finding the right area to stay. When I did all of my research, I landed on the most central location of Sarlat-la-Canéda . The town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is in the heart of the valley and has everything you need. You’re minutes from the river, other picturesque towns, and sights. I’ve also included other incredible accommodations that would be worth considering.

Sarlat-la-Canéda Hotels

  • Le Petit Manoir for best historic, luxury stay in the center
  • Hotel Plaza Madeleine À Sarlat for a historic stay in the center
  • Les Cordeliers for best luxury hotel just outside the city center
  • Hotel Montaigne for the best modern stay in Sarlat
  • Domaine de Rochebois for the best luxury countryside retreat

Other Notable Hotels to Stay At

  • La Vieux Logis , a Relais & Chateux property in Trémolat
  • Château de la Treyne along the river (unreal hotel for the pricepoint)
  • Hôtel de Bouilhac in Montignac for a design stay
  • Chateau de Maraval for a design maison d’hôte in Cénac-et-Saint-Julien
  • Châteaux dans Les Arbres for most unique stay
  • Le Moulin du Roc   for luxury with Michelin restaurant in Champagnec-de-Belair
  • Le Moulin de l’Abbaye for luxury stay with Michelin restaurant in Brantôme

The Best Villages To Visit in The Dordogne

There are dozens of villages to choose from in the Dordogne when it comes to exploring. I’ve pulled together my top three favorites from this list of the best villages in the Dordogne . Many of the villages in this region are designated Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (which translates to “the most beautiful villages of France”).

dordogne france tours

Domme is a picturesque village nestled atop a hill overlooking the Dordogne River, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and charming shops, Domme is a must-visit destination for some of the best views over the Dordogne Valley. There are some great restaurants in town and lots of shops on the main street.

Beynac-et-Cazennac

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

Nestled along the Dordogne River, the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac is just under the Château de Beynac, a medieval fortress that looms above the village. This village is one of my favorites as it’s so petite but offers wonderful views and a step back in time. Do note that there aren’t many services here in terms of restaurants, more of a historic village to stroll.

La Roque-Gageac

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

This may be one of the most iconic villages on the Dordogne River, as it is built into the side of the cliffs. It’s dramatic, and right near lots of things to do. On the river’s edge, you’ll find several restaurants and shops lining the street. But don’t forget to make the climb up to the quiet village area.

Incredible Things to Do in Dordogne, France

Taste the local cuisine.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

One of my favorite parts of time in the Dordogne is the chance to experience cuisine, often referred to as Périgord cuisine. Duck and goose play a central role in many traditional dishes, with specialties like duck confit, foie gras, and magret de canard (duck breast). Truffles, both black and white, are highly prized and used seasonally — keep an eye out for black truffle dishes.

The region is also known for its walnut-based products, you’ll see shops everywhere selling these seasonally. Chestnuts, wild mushrooms, and game meats such as venison and wild boar feature prominently in seasonal dishes. It’s such a foodie paradise and there are many Michelin-starred restaurants and cozy local cafes to stop into.

Visit Historic Castles

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

Dordogne is most known for its impressive medieval castles like Château de Castelnaud , Château de Beynac , and Château de Hautefort . All of these are wonderful castles to visit while there, and one other picturesque castle to visit is Château des Milandes . This historic château is renowned for its association with Josephine Baker, the famous American-born French dancer, who once owned the property and spent part of her life here. You can explore the château’s elegant interiors and lush gardens. Be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds.

Get Outdoors in the Dordogne

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

Paddle along the picturesque Dordogne River, taking in the scenic views and passing by charming villages and dramatic cliffs. It’s one of the best things to do and several places offer kayaks for rent along the river. There are many hikes and other places to go cycling as well if you’re looking to get active. This tour starts in Vitr ac and offers guided canoe tours down the river, whereas this kayak rental tour is self-guided.

Explore the Underground Caves and Prehistoric Sites

Lascaux caves in Montignac

The Dordogne region is famous for its network of underground caves and grottoes, many of which are home to prehistoric art and stunning geological formations. The UNESCO Heritage Site of Lascaux caves in Montignac is renowned for its Paleolithic cave paintings, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of Prehistory.” Located in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, Font-de-Gaume is one of the last caves in France with original prehistoric paintings that are still open to the public. The cave features intricate drawings dating back over 17,000 years. There are many UNESCO World Heritage Sites across Périgord Noir, so be sure to carve out some time for this.

See the Candlelight Tour of Les Jardins de Marqueyssac

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

This might be the best thing to do in the Dordogne. While Les Jardins de Marqueyssac is worth a visit any time of the year to see the exquisite gardens, they do have a special experience. In the summer months, the gardens are open late through night and are filled with two thousand little candles to light the paths. It’s so special and well worth booking tickets in advance.

Visit the Famous Sarlat-la-Caneda Farmer’s Market

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Dordogne

There is not a better market in France than Sarlat’s farmers market. It draws in so many visitors that the town shuts down for market days — do arrive early! The big market is on Saturday morning though there is a seasonal one on Wednesday as well. You’ll find all of the fresh produce and seasonal cuisine here, a great spot to stock up on souvenirs.

See a Few Museums

Visit museums like the Musée National de Préhistoire in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil and the Château de Losse to appreciate the region’s cultural heritage. The Musée National de Préhistoire in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in prehistoric history. Located in the “Capital of Prehistory,” this museum showcases a remarkable collection of artifacts, tools, and artworks from the region’s prehistoric periods.

Take a Day Trip to Rocamadour

dordogne france tours

If you’re looking for another iconic village in France to visit and doable within a day’s trip, consider Rocamadour in the Lot. It’s one of my favorite villages, somewhere I grew up going. It’s built into the side of the mountain, and so picturesque.

There are so many day trips that can be done for this region. I know people who even go as far as the volcanic mountains of Puy de Sancy and Puy de Dôme, icons of Massif Central.

Use Booking.com for hotels and guest houses. They have the biggest inventory and consistently offer the best rates.

3. Book Your Tours & Experiences

Use Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours and experiences. They are my favorite tour search engines. I always check both as their inventory varies depending on the destination.

4. Book Your Car

Use Discover Cars or Rentalcars.com to find the best car rental deals. I recommend comparing rental agency reviews on Google to ensure you are booking with the best company in that destination, as the reviews are often more accurate than the car rental search engines.

5. Don’t Forget Airport Lounge Access

Get a Priority Pass membership to gain access to 1,400+ VIP lounges and airport experiences worldwide. The Priority Pass app is the first thing I check when I have a layover. I’ve been a member for over a decade, and having a comfortable place to relax before and between flights makes air travel so much more enjoyable.

6. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.

My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:

  • World Nomads (best for all-around)
  • Safety Wing (best for frequent travelers)

Xx, Jessica

8 Day Bordeaux & Dordogne Tour Breathtaking, Magical, Authentic

This tour combines two of the greatest regions to visit in France. Bordeaux is the most famous wine region in the world, where many of the best wines come from, and is also the name of one of the best cities in France. It is a must visit for anyone passionate about wine and French culture. Dordogne is a region you may have heard of but maybe know less about. For foodies, it is known as the duck, truffle, and foie gras capital of France. (Vegetarian, vegans and less adventurous souls do not worry we have meals that suits everyone's needs) For history lovers it has a cave filled with 15,000 year old prehistoric paintings and some of the best medieval towns and castles to explore. Some highlights are a truffle farm visit, an art and light show in an old German U-boat base, castle visits, wine tastings, market shopping, and exploring the prehistoric caves, all with your new friends and local French guides.

Reserve your spot today, and get ready for a tour full of memories!

Testimonials

John C. (October 2023 - Google Review)

Bordeaux and Dordogne. This was our second tour with TripUSAFrance and we were not disappointed. The tour included a variety of activities and experiences from castles, wineries and prehistoric cave art, modern art and local culture. The tours were all professionally conducted and the guides were engaging and friendly. I particularly liked the balance between program and free time to explore. The accommodations were wonderful. If you are looking for a small group experience, this is the company for you.

David B. (Sept 2023 - Google Review)

My wife & I recently returned from this truly amazing guided journey from Bordeaux through the historic French wine countryside of Dordogne/Perigord. The guides were fun, knowledgeable & passionate - the food & wines were excellent - the accommodations simply divine. A terrific experience.

Joan B. (Sept 2022 - WeTravel Review)

An unforgettable trip—perfect in every way: fabulous sites, activities and meals. The wine-tasting and education was terrific! Bordeaux is a gem—not to be missed. As a guide, Julia is a meticulous planner and a whirlwind. She is attentive to the needs and preferences of the participants and creates a fun atmosphere, as well.

Wherever possible we prefer to travel on our own as opposed to going on a tour package. With France - Just For You, they arranged for a vehicle and booked us into a couple of lovely B&B’s and a great Boutique Hotel in Paris and booked a couple of activities that we were interested in. Besides that, they put together a book for us with everything we would need for a safe and hassle free trip. This included general information about France, common French phrases, suggested daily itineraries, recommended restaurants, etc, etc. It was a wonderful holiday with the flexibility to see and do what you wanted at your own pace. I would not hesitate to recommend France - Just For You. Truly amazing!

Southern France from Bordeaux to Avignon

When the South of France is mentionned, many travelers think of Provence. But there is so much more to discover between the South-West and the South-East of France. This 26 day itinerary is designed to give you a very complete tour of the southern part of France, enjoying the gastronomy, heritage, wine, villages, and scenic roads . . . the best that France has to offer.

H ow to Get to the Dordogne region

Dordogne is more than 300 miles away from Paris in the South West of France. While it is possible to get a train from Paris to Dordogne, this is a less convenient option. There are no direct TGV trains to Périgueux, so journeys from Paris often take between 4.5 and 5.5 hours. We recommend taking the TGV high-speed train down to Bordeaux and pick up your hire car from there. Alternatively, if you don't want to spend time in Paris , fly directly in to Bordeaux or Toulouse. From there you will only have a 2-3 hour drive to Dordogne, with plenty to see along the way.

If you decide to drive from Paris to Dordogne, it takes over 5 hours, so we'll plan rest-stops in the Loire Valley .  You will stop for lunch in one of the Loire Valley's beautiful villages before continuing your journey feeling refreshed and ready to begin your Dordogne self-drive tour. We usually plan for our travelers to stay for a few nights in the Loire valley on the way: it's a more relaxed pace.

Where to Stay in Dordogne

Dordogne is a rural area of France and we warmly recommend staying in the gorgeous mansions or farms in the countryside. This will give you a real feel for the region.

Be careful as "Dordogne" is vast and you can easily be in a fringe location which makes the touring complicated on the small roads.

We have selected premium B&Bs, in very charming houses , where you are centrally located to explore the Black Perigord jewels and enjoy everything the region has to offer as part of your Dordogne self-drive itinerary.

Places to visit in Dordogne

The first thing you'll notice as you drive through Dordogne is the truly awesome scenery. The Dordogne boasts valleys and gorges, craggy mountain-tops and carefully sculpted botanical gardens. Our tours of Dordogne take you to the most beautiful viewpoints, so you'll experience French nature at its best.

Dordogne is also famous for its extensive heritage spanning across the ages. This takes the form of prehistoric caves, medieval architecture, medieval towns and castles and many a medieval village which seems like it's been suspended in time. It also has a strong food tradition that forms part of its heritage. We will make sure your Dordogne itinerary includes the best places to go for extraordinary culinary experiences.

Here are some more things to do and places to visit on your Dordogne tour. We would be happy to include any or all of these in your Dordogne driving itinerary:

The Prehistoric  Caves of Dordogne

The Dordogne has an abundance of gorgeous architecture and natural beauty. But arguably its most spectacular feature is its prehistoric caves filled with original prehistoric art. The prehistoric cave paintings in this region date back to between 12,000 and 20,000 years ago. The caves have become one of the most fascinating attractions in the country.

Many caves - such as the original cave at Lascaux, a UNESCO world heritage site - have been closed for conservation purposes. Furthermore, those that remain open - such as the Font de Gaume cave (about 1km east of Les Eyzies) - will only accept a limited number of visitors each day . These are also likely to close within the next 5-10 years to preserve the prehistoric art. We warmly recommend trying to see these wonderful prehistoric cave paintings before they are cordoned off from the public forever. Normally, we have to make bookings about 8 months in advance to have the best chance of getting tickets.

We are well acquainted with the caves of the Dordogne. Based on our experience, we will plan a self drive itinerary with recommendations for popular caves and chasms such as Lascaux  or  Padirac. But we will also guide you to some of our favorites that few tourists know about. This way you will get a taste of this incredible part of French history as part of your self guided trip to the Dordogne.

Paintings of bison dating back 12,000 to 15,000 years

Th e Dordogne’s Medieval Fortresses

Above ground, Dordogne boasts an astonishing number of castles and fortresses, dating as far back as the medieval era. Dordogne has a lot of the most charming medieval towns in France . It may not be an exaggeration when they say that Dordogne is the region of a thousand castles. We haven't counted them all, but there are a LOT and we would love to guide you to our favorites during your self-drive tour in Dordogne. Unfortunately, not all are open to the public but those that are, are well worth seeing. We love Castelnaud la Chapelle, Château de Beynac and les Milandes, which was once owned by Josephine Baker. Visitors may tour these on foot or view them from unique vantage points of the Dordogne River. We are happy to organise canoe trips or excursions on a comfortable gabarre boat, depending on your preferences.

Exploring the majestic halls and magnificent staircases of these chateaux transports you back hundreds of years to when the feudal system reigned supreme.

This is on our list for wedding anniversary celebration trips , you may check it out.

Dordogne valley in France from Castelnaud

Beautiful Gardens in Dordogne

Although the medieval castles are a wondrous sight, the grounds outside often steal their thunder. The hanging gardens of Marqueyssac are quite magnificent and you may enjoy wandering through its leafy avenues for many hours. If you visit in the summer, stay till nightfall and experience the magic of candlelit Thursday nights.

Not only are the gardens themselves spectacular, but some have outstanding views of the Dordogne region and its chalky cliffs.

Beyond Marqueyssac, the Eyrignac Gardens are another example of the great outdoors, sculpted and manicured to perfection. The entire complex consists of seven different gardens, each with its own charm and delights. You can admire the hedge sculptures, visit the Chinese pagoda and discover the herbs and spices in the Kitchen Garden. On a fine day, there is no better place to be than one of the beautiful gardens in Dordogne...without a doubt some of the most magnificent gardens in France .

Mouth- Watering Local Products

When it comes to cuisine, the Dordogne has much to be proud of. We'll help you discover the wide range of local produce at one of the many farmers’ markets in Dordogne. These take place every day of the week in different towns. As you wander through the market, stop to try a sample of what they have on offer at different stalls. We guarantee you will leave laden down with delicious treats.

Typical food you'll try on your Dordogne tour includes cabécou goat’s cheese , foie gras , duck confit and walnut cake . There is also a special dish known as pomme de terres sarladaises. This consists of three ingredients: potatoes, garlic and goose fat - simple yet satisfying. You can also find  truffles and related products such as truffle oil in this region. If you have a taste for gourmet, let us know - we're sure you'll enjoy a fantastic day out truffle-hunting !

Beautiful Villages in the Dordogne: Aut henticity without equal

It is well known that this region has  the highest concentration of  beautiful villages in France . These include the medieval town of  Sarlat La Canéda,  the beautiful village of Saint Amand de Coly, as well as  Rocamadour ,  Martel  and  La Roque Gageac . Your Dordogne driving itinerary will include opportunities to stroll along cobbled streets and enjoy the slow, provincial pace of life. Enjoy a pastry in one of the quaint village cafés and sit outside watching the world go by.

While we know the wonder and enchantment of the Dordogne, this marvellous region has managed to stay under the radar. This is a blessing in disguise for visitors. The region has maintained an authentic, local atmosphere, having so far avoided the influx of tourists. This means you will have space to explore the Dordogne valley away from the tourist crowds.

The Dordogne looks like a landscape from the pages of a fairytale. Thick swathes of green fringe the glistening river that runs through this region of stunning chateaux and hidden caves.

A favorite getaway for both tourists and French holidaymakers, the Dordogne holds enough beauty and charm to enthrall even the most weary of travelers. So what are you waiting for?

FAQs about the Dordogne

It's very difficult to choose one thing, because it will depend on your preferences. We love the beautiful medieval town of Sarlat, with its cathedral and stunning views of the rooftops from the tower.

We also highly recommend a trip along the Dordogne river, where you'll be surrounded by the rocky cliffs of the valley and encounter impressive castles and fortresses. If you enjoy sports, you can go canoeing along the river. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, we'll recommend a trip on a traditional gabare boat.

On a self-drive tour in Dordogne, our favorite photo-stop is in Rocamadour. And if you enjoy history, visiting one (or several) of the regions prehistoric caves to admire the cave art is an absolute must.

Again, this will depend on your itinerary and your preferences. For our Dordogne tours, we have selected comfortable, premium B&Bs in Dordogne that we have tested ourselves and where we know you'll receive a very warm welcome from the hosts. We'll arrange for you to stay at accommodation that is quite central and an easy drive from the main places we recommend you visit during your stay in Dordogne. It will be a beautiful and quiet location. There are many benefits to staying in a French B&B, including fewer guests, a warmer welcome, the opportunity to get to know your French hosts, and the chance to stay in an old home that is hundreds of years old.

One would think driving in a different country where cars are on the wrong side of the road and you don’t speak the language for 11 day trip would not be a smart decision. France Just for You is definitely the travel consultant you go to. Emilie’s very quick replies to queries, personal knowledge of having been to places recommended and organisation skills for minute details, makes them truly reliable.

From getting us a French smartphone complete with the necessary apps to help us navigate and keep us connected , and also providing us with a personalised guidebook that dictates step-by step advice on what to look out for, GPS guide on where to go , where to park, how to use the parking machines/toll machines/even pumping gas (complete with images of where to slot in your cards) , made our travelling around and navigation practically stress-free!

Emilie crafted itineraries which allows my family of four , each with different interests ( from WWII millitary historical sites to a whole new world of Chateaus ,medieval villages ,flower gardens , immersive artworks, sunset and fantastic night sky , to cooking French cuisines) experiences to treasure and remember.

We had a half day guide in Paris, Raphaelle, who is truly knowledgeable about art , history and architecture. We visited Picasso Museum and because the artwork there were not laid out chronologically, Raphaelle made it easily understandable by showing us through her own folder of personal compilations of the Master’s progress of life encounters and artworks (which should be made into a book) that ties in to the art pieces on display, it provided us with so many aha moments.

I was very nervous to visit a country that I have never learned the language spoken so that is the reason I wanted someone to help me plan this trip with my children. Emilie was wonderful. The B&Bs that she booked were some of the very best places I have ever stayed and I have traveled quite a bit. The cell phone that we were given was priceless for getting around, the language barrier and checking in with others back home. I would recommended using Emilie to everyone. It was fantastic. A trip of a lifetime with my children who are 18 and 25.

Thank you so much Emilie for all your hard work on our anniversary trip to St. Emilion and the Loire Valley! We had such a great time and everything you planned for us was just perfect. Having traveled to Paris and Nice many times, this was our first time exploring the countryside and we had a blast. We cannot thank you enough for everything! Kris …

Highly recommend Avalon Waterways to deliver a fabulous cruise experience. We travelled on two boats due to water levels on the Rhine. The transfer and replacement bus trip between boats was arranged seamlessly. Avalon very generously refunded a days’ cruising $ amount as well as provided us with “lunch money” - they were proactive, organised and professional. My dietary needs were met beyond any level I had previously experienced. My meals were delicious and resembled what the general population received. Thank you Tibor and your team for being absolutely fabulous.

Walk from village to village within the picturesque landscapes of the Dordogne region, or as the French call it, the "Perigord". All our tours take you on tranquil trails and through rich rolling hills and charming medieval villages, many on hill tops overlooking the river. Delight in the hand-picked accommodations, the mouth-watering cuisine and local wines. Why not try the  Walking in the Dordogne Short Break  tour, a short itinerary where you stay in Domme, a stunning hilltop town and in Sarlat-le-Canada, which has one of the best local markets in all of France.

Macs Adventure are experts in providing tours with the best this area of France has to offer since we know this area intimately and have been offering tours here for the past 10 years. We work closely with our local partners to ensure that you will have the best possible experience, which one of our customers described as, "heart-renderingly beautiful". We could not agree more.

Our Hilltop Villages of the Dordogne tour is located in Upper Dordogne and is perhaps a little less visited than the Perigord Noir region, however, whichever tour you choose, the countryside walks are always quiet and provide time for contemplation. During the harvest season you can even pick a ripe fig or apple off a tree as part of your packed lunch. The views surrounding you as you walk will always capture your attention and provide great opportunities for enthusiastic photographers. Enjoy the delicious local wine and food as you sit in a local restaurant to enjoy the ambience and indulge in some people-watching.

Discover the dordogne.

The Dordogne region of France is well-known for its gastronomic heritage and exquisite culinary delicacies.

Fois Gras and Truffles

There are several types of fois gras and it will be served in every restaurant you eat in. Not great if you are a vegetarian, but don't worry there are plenty of alternatives. However, if you are a meat-eater it is a not-to-be-missed delicacy of the region.

The Dordogne has one of the most significant truffle trade centres in France. The "black diamond" truffle is expensive, rare and in high demand.

Strawberries

There are 7 varieties of strawberries in the Perigord IGP group (Guarantee of Control and Certification). These delicious varieites of strawberries grow so well here due to the mild climate. You may even happen upon a strawberry festival in one of the villages or towns. Its also a very versatile fruit and can be used to make tarts, icecream and salad with goat's cheese.

The walnuts of the Perigord come in 4 varieties, and are interestingly named as, "Corne" the rustic, "Marbot" the traditional, "Grandjean" the classic, and "Franquette" the desired. Growing walnuts in this region dates back to the Cro-Magnon period and they were even used as a form of currency in the Middle Ages. You will find them in salads, on pizza and in the ingredients for soaps and oil.

Most famous is the Cabécou of Périgord which is a traditional soft goats milk cheese, delicious in salads and even on pizza! The oldest cheese is the Trappe d'Echourgnac, which monks starting to make in the region in 1868.

Dordogne Gastronomy

The local markets in the Dordogne are an absolute delight and listed below are their opening times, which is worth noting, so that you can perhaps time the starting date of your tour to be there when at least a few of the markets are on.

From walnuts to cheese to truffles and wine you will find all the local specialities at these amazing markets. These are places where the locals meet and exchange gossip. This is a chance to lose yourself for an hour or so, sit in a terrace cafe and enjoy people watching, whilst the town or village comes to life. A recommendation is to buy some local produce at these markets and perhaps some artisan bread, cheese and wine for your picnic lunch.

Dordogne Local Markets

The Dordogne Valley has 10 of the Plus Beaux Villages de France! Many of them are on hilltops, from which there are great views of the sparkling and tranquil river below.

This remarkable village has steep cobbled lanes and at the top a medieval castle to explore, which has sweeping views across the river plain.

This bastide village, also on a hill top, is endearingly beautiful. It was founded in 1283. Order a coffee, beer or local glass of wine as you sit on a terrace overlooking the view. You can also wander through its tiny streets and admire its medieval fortifications.

La Roque-Gageac

This village occupies a dramatic setting tucked under ochre-coloured cliffs and it's main street parallel to the river. It has a micro-climate due to its south-facing position and you will find palm and banana trees growing here!

Sarlat-Le-Canada

Ok, so this village is technically a town! One of the busier places in the area, but nonetheless a wonderful place to stay or visit, with its honey-coloured architecture, secret squares and incredible market.

Welcome to Dordogne

An area of natural beauty, rolling hills, old villages, castles and small country towns that are ripe to be explored and enjoyed by all who pass through or visit. The heart of the Dordogne is centred around the city and prefecture of Perogueux. The area is perhaps most famous for, amongst other things, its gourmet delights, notably paté de foie gras, walnuts and truffles.

The Perigord Noir is in the centre of the Dordogne region. Named for its dark woodlands, predominantly oak and walnut trees. The walnuts are used to make regional specialities, including oil. The Vézère valley cuts through its centre, creating impressive cliffs with many limestone caves. In terms of sights and attractions, these caves contain works of prehistoric interest and the region has many pretty villages with dark slate roofs. Its main town is Sarlet-la-Canéda, a medieval centre full of houses from the 15th and 16th centuries.

West of this is the Perigord Pourpre. Named purple because of its importance as a wine-growing region, this area covers the city of Bergerac and the south-west area of the Dordogne. It's pretty gentle hills, which are also covered in sunflowers, make this one of the most attractive areas to visit. It is also well served by the international airport at Bergerac.

History & Culture in Bergerac

Today there is a marked difference between the rural and city areas of the Dordogne. Migration to the cities has been an overall theme, though this has been countered somewhat by immigrants taking up residence in the countryside.

The economy is mainly focused on agriculture (wine being the major income generator) with some industrial base in the cities, but the wealth of visitors means tourism is becoming more important. Many Europeans have taken advantage of the property crashes over the last 30 years and bought houses in the region. They have been, in the most part, welcomed because of the money they bring to the region. For the English, this has been in part due to their positive historical heritage.

Sights & Attractions in Bergerac

The medieval towns, hilltop villages and cities built on the banks of the famous river are all amongst the attractions of the region. Within each town you will find historic buildings, informative museums and some of the most exciting prehistoric finds in Europe. A wealth of caves and underground caverns litter the region, allowing you to explore the Dordogne in the darker and cooler climes beneath. The perfect respite from the hot summer rays.

Another major draw of the region are the numerous chateaux. Some fortified, some privately owned and most with an intriguing history and a certain beauty that attracts us to them. From fairytale style chateaux to wine estates and fortresses you will have your pick.

Things to do in Bergerac

Going for a paddle in the Dordogne is possibly one of the most popular activities in the region. Whether you choose to take your own kayak or canoe, or to take an organised boat trip on a tradition Gabare. On a hot summer day, taking a dip is certainly appealing. The Ministry of Health in France provides up-to-date information regarding the cleanliness of rivers and swimming areas. The  interactive map  (which is available in English) allows you to zoom in on the beaches of interest and to review recent test results. The beaches and rivers are ranked from excellent (blue) to prohibited (pink), meaning that entering the water is strictly prohibited. The monthly testing and monitoring makes it possible to assess the effects of wastewater sanitation and dirty rainwater runoff into swimming sites.
