To support faculty research and scholarship and overall professional development, the Offices of the President, Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President for Administration and Finance, and the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Economic Development have allocated $200,000.00 in travel funding for full time faculty.

Beginning with the 2023-24 academic year, faculty will have two opportunities to apply for travel grant funding. The two initiatives include the  Faculty Research Travel Grant  and the  Faculty Professional Development Travel Grant . Faculty may receive  one  travel grant in  each  category within one yearly cycle if eligibility criteria are met.

Faculty Research Travel Grant

Faculty research travel to national and international peer-reviewed conferences for presentations of original scholarship, as well as travel for the purpose of collaborating with program managers of funding agencies.  Eligible faculty members must hold full-time positions; visiting/emergency temporary faculty, and adjuncts are not eligible to apply.

Faculty  must  be  conducting a conference presentation and submission of a  notice of acceptance  of a conference proposal is  required  in the application.

Individual grant award funds have been increased this year with funding allocated in the amount of $1,000 or $1,500 (a reduced amount may be provided to align with anticipated total travel expenditures).

While all full-time faculty applications will be considered for funding, awarding of funds will be prioritized based on the following criteria:

  • Graduate faculty with Full Membership (formerly Level II) status,
  • Graduate faculty who teach or research in a doctoral program,
  • Tenured or tenure-track status (Professor and Associate Professor rankings prioritized),
  • Faculty who  do not  hold an Endowed Professorship or Endowed Chair,
  • Non-STEM faculty and/or non-STEM presentations,
  • Availability of other funding sources (such as, professorship stipends, grant funding),
  • Purpose of proposed travel,
  • Contribution of travel to the faculty member, department, college, and/or University, and
  • Overall quality of the application.

Faculty Research Travel Grant Guidelines can be found at  Faculty Travel Grant Guidelines

Faculty Professional Development Travel Grant

Faculty travel to professional conferences relative to the faculty’s discipline or professional development interests. Funds are available for attendance at various conference levels including national and international, regional, state, and online conferences. Eligible faculty members must hold full-time positions, including visiting/emergency temporary faculty; however, adjunct faculty are not eligible for these funds.

A conference presentation is  not  required for eligibility for the Faculty Professional Development Travel Grant. Faculty presenting at multiple conferences may apply for both a Faculty Research Travel Grant  and  a Faculty Professional Development Travel Grant. However, only one travel grant may be received in each grant category.

Grant award funds for Faculty Professional Development Travel will be allocated in the amount of $750 or $1,000 (a reduced amount may be provided to align with anticipated total travel expenditures).

  • Undergraduate and graduate faculty,
  • Non-tenured and tenured-track faculty (priority given to Assistant Professor and Instructor rankings),
  • Contribution of travel to professional development and growth of the faculty member to impact at a personal, departmental, college, and/or University level, and

Faculty Professional Development Travel Grant Guidelines can be found at  Faculty Travel Grant Guidelines

Travel Grant Application Process

One application process will be used for submission of either an application for the Faculty Research Travel Grant or the Faculty Professional Development Travel Grant.

In the online application, the faculty member will indicate which grant is being requested – only one grant request per application. All applications will be submitted using the same application rounds ( timelines and deadlines ). In submitting the online application, all requested information must be completed.

Faculty are eligible for one travel award within each of the two grant categories , assuming eligibility criteria are met.

Refer to the Faculty Travel Grant Guidelines for information regarding purpose, eligibility, priority criteria, application process, and award procedures.

Faculty Travel Grants

The Faculty Travel Grants Program is designed to support the costs of faculty travel to conferences and professional meetings to make formal presentations, exhibits, or performances, involving their research, scholarship, or creative activities. The program is supported by The Geneseo Foundation and funded by private contributions. The Geneseo Foundation and the College Senate recognize that support for travel is an important concern for faculty, and this program is designed to encourage and help support participation in professional meetings.

Application deadlines are September 4, 2023 and January 29, 2024. The first deadline for the 2024-25 travel year is April 22, 2024

  • Grants will be made to formal participants at professional meetings, conferences, showings, or performances. Participation is defined as presenting a paper or poster, organizing a session, serving as a discussant, or giving an invited performance or gallery showing.
  • The maximum total annual award (for the summer-fall-spring fiscal year cycle) is $1,000 for presentations within the U.S./Canada (excluding Hawaii); or $1,200 for travel to Hawaii or outside the U.S./Canada.
  • Requests for funds to conduct research (e.g. field work, trips to libraries or archives) will NOT be considered.
  • The funding year will be divided into three funding periods in the following order: summer, fall, and spring. Each period will have its own deadline for applications. The first deadline of each year falls in April, which is considered the "Summer" deadline.  Generally this deadline is for travel that occurs during mid-June or later, and you will receive an award from which you can seek reimbursement after July 1st, which is the start of the new fiscal year {see note below regarding late spring applications }. The 2022-23 Summer deadline is 04/24/23, the deadline for the Fall semester is 09/4/2023 and the deadline for the Spring semester is 01/29/2024 . The first (Summer) deadline for the 2024-25 year is 04/22/23. Note on late spring applications :  If you have not already used your award funds for the year and wish to apply at the April deadline for conference travel that will be completed by approximately mid-June, you can, but you will be given an award that must be used before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th).  If your travel will be completed after mid-June, you will be given an award to be used in the new fiscal year (after July 1st). Please check with Anne Baldwin, [email protected] , if you are unsure about when to apply. Deadlines will be enforced to enable prompt review of applications after the closing date. If you have not yet received notification that your presentation has been accepted, you should still apply at the appropriate deadline and confirmation of your acceptance can be provided later.
  • In the event that the Research Council has insufficient funds to award all eligible requests in an application round, funds will be awarded at a percentage rate equal to the total available funds divided by the total amount of approved requests.
  • All funds will be maintained and dispersed by the Geneseo Foundation. Appropriate receipts must be submitted to the Geneseo Foundation before reimbursement.
  • You cannot use your State-issued travel card (JP Morgan Chase) for expenses that will be reimbursed by this grant.
  • Travel plans and reimbursement requests should reasonably reflect the formal conference dates and start/end times, inclusive of conference-related activities that occur pre- and post-conference.

Message from Secretary

"SERB supports research in frontier areas of Science and Engineering. A regular faculty / researcher in an academic / research institution can seek research support to carry out his/her research. Board also gives special attention to young scientists below the age of 35 years (relaxable by 5 years in the case of SC/ST/OBC, woman and physically handicapped category) to undertake independent research in newly emerging and frontier areas of science and engineering."

dst travel grant for faculty

One of the most notable developments in the S&T sector in the XI Plan has been the setting up of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) through an Act of Parliament, viz. the Science and Engineering Research Board Act, 2008. Promoting basic research in Science and Engineering and to provide financial assistance to persons engaged in such research, academic institutions, research and development laboratories, industrial concerns and other agencies for such research and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto are the primary and distinctive mandate of the Board.

SERB aims to build up best management systems which would match the best global practices in the area of promotion and funding of basic research.

I have often pondered over the roles of knowledge or experience, on the one hand, and imagination or intuition, on the other, in the process of discovery. I believe that there is a certain fundamental conflict between the two, and knowledge, by advocating caution, tends to inhibit the flight of imagination.
