TOUR OVERVIEW

Visit one of the most awe-inspiring remnants of ancient civilization – Egypt. Cruise the Nile and be transported back to the time of the great Pharaohs, visit the Valley of the Kings and Queen, the 2000-year old Temple of Horus and the Temple of Philae. Gaze upon the Pyramids and Sphinx and tour the Egyptian Museum, with one of the largest collection of antiquities. Combine this with a few days in the cradle of democracy – Athens – with its famous Acropolis and Panathenaikon stadium. Explore the Greek islands and classical sites and spend the day in Rhodes where you can ascend to the Acropolis of Lindos, stroll the Street of the Knights or relax on the beautiful picture-perfect Tsampika beach. Rekindle your romance or start a new one watching the sunset on the caldera in Santorini.

TRAVEL TIPS – EGYPT & GREECE

PASSPORT/VISA: (It is recommended that your passport has at least six (6) months of validity whenever you travel abroad to avoid unintended travel disruptions. Because rules and regulations frequently change, please inquire about passports validity and visas from the consulate of the foreign country you will visit. Participants with a valid U.S. passport must also obtain a visa from the Egyptian Consulate or upon arrival in Egypt. If you hold a passport of a foreign country, please contact the Egyptian Consulate in your area for information on whether or not you need a visa. Important: Passengers requiring a Schengen Visa must have a multi-entry Schengen Visa if visiting more than one country.)  CURRENCY: (The local currency is the Egyptian Pound (L.E.) Exchange your money at banks or at the exchange counter at your hotel.)  BANKING HOURS: (Banks are open 8:30am to 1:00pm every day except Sunday, when hours are 10:00am to 12 noon. Banks close on Friday and Saturday.)  WHAT TO PACK: (Summer months: Lightweight clothing. A sweater for cool Cairo evenings. At all times: Modesty in clothing should be observed; wear bathing suits and shorts at the beach or swimming pools only. A good rule is to cover your back and shoulders outside of the hotel area. Women should cover their arms when visiting mosques. Bring comfortable shoes for sightseeing.)  HEALTH PRECAUTIONS: (Drink only bottled water with no ice. Eat in the hotel restaurants or in well-known leading restaurants.)  ELECTRICITY: (The current is 200 volts, 50 cycles in Cairo and most areas. Wall plugs are the round, two-pronged European type.)  TELECOMMUNICATIONS: (Make long distance calls from the hotel. Collect calls cannot be made from Egypt.)  SHOPPING: (Cairo is a shopping adventure! Buy brass, copper, inlaid wooden articles, silver and gold jewelry, leather shoes, bags and belt, cotton goods or perfumes. You should be able to bargain up to two thirds off the price originally quoted to you.)  SHOPS: (Shops are open from 9am to 1pm and from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. Shops close on Sundays)

PASSPORT/VISA: (It is recommended that your passport have at least six months of validity whenever you travel abroad to avoid unintended travel disruptions. Because rules and regulations frequently change, please inquire about passports validity and visas from the consulate of the foreign country you will visit. Participants with valid U.S. and Canadian passports do not require visas. If you hold a passport of a foreign country, please contact the Greek Consulate in your area for information on whether or not you need a visa.  Important: Passengers requiring a Schengen Visa must have a multi-entry Schengen Visa if visiting more than one country.)  CLIMATE: (The temperature in Athens ranges from 55F in January to 92F in July and August. Seasonal breezes called meltemia moderate the summer heat. The country averages more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year.)  CLOTHING: (Dress tends to be casual, but there are limits. Sleeveless dresses and shorts may not be worn in monasteries and churches, and women should be sure that arms and shoulders are covered. Jackets for men and cocktail dresses for women are required in the posher of restaurants and in the casinos.)  EXCURSIONS: (Visiting the Greek ruins often means traversing over irregular stony terrain that can present a double hazard. Thus, shoes worn on such excursions should be sturdy and absolutely comfortable. Do not wear high heel shoes on these excursions.)  CURRENCY: (The unit of currency is the Euro. Coinage is available in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents with 1 and 2 Euros. Bank notes come in units of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Euros. It is not necessary to exchange your money prior to your arrival in Athens. There are two banks open where you can exchange your money at the baggage claim area in Athens airport. There are also banks at the hotels.)  TIPPING: (The Greek restaurants automatically include a 15% service charge. If that is the case, the custom is to leave small change on the plate for the waiter and an equivalent amount on the table for the bus boy. In restaurants without a service charge or in the case of room service, 15% is the norm.)  SHOPPING: (The favorite buys in Athens are furs, leather goods (especially shoes), hand-woven and hand-embroidered clothing and linen, ceramics, handbags, jewelry and flokati rugs. The most elegant shopping area is the Kolonaki district where you will find the latest European styles.)  ELECTRICITY: (The standard electrical current throughout Greece is 220AC and the outlets are made for 2 round poles.)  BANKS & CREDIT CARDS: (All major credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and cosmopolitan boutiques. However, they are not used as extensively as they are in the U.S. Traveler's checks are widely accepted throughout Greece. They can be exchanged easily at almost all banks and post offices.)  TIME: (There is a seven-hour (+7) difference when New York is on the Eastern Standard Time. Greece, along with the rest of the European Community, observes daylight savings time from April to October.)

Greece - Turkey - Egypt : In Search for Ancient Civilizations

Tour was good, however guides were not as good everywhere. We had a guide in Egypt that did not give us any time to buy souvenirs, he was pretty much rushing the whole time and his English was very limited so when we had a question, he ignored us most of the time. Its like he memorized his speech since he was talking non stop.

Alexandria shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in alexandria.

Alexandria's museums house many priceless artifacts from ancient times.

Cultural Collections

Alexandria's museums house many priceless artifacts from ancient times.

Alexandria, Egypt, has a rich and complex history. To get a sense of it, make sure you visit at least one of the city's many museums. The Alexandria National Museum and the Antiquities Museum are heavy hitters, but there's also the Royal Jewelry Museum, a stately manor that harbors a vast collection of awe-inspiring jewels — from priceless diamonds and rubies to rarely seen stones from far-flung places.

The catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa are a showcase of ancient culture

Adventure Underground

The catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa are a showcase of ancient culture

Archaeologists will tell you that an entire world can be buried just beneath your feet. This is true in Alexandria, where impressive tombs and temples have been discovered underground. The catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa are a great example. They form a maze of subterranean burial chambers dating to the Roman era, and taking a tour of these catacombs is one of the best things to do in Alexandria, Egypt. They contain all kinds of spectacular relics that showcase a combination of Egyptian, Roman and Greek cultures.

Alexandria, Egypt, is also home to stunning shorelines sure to please beach lovers.

Shore Up on Beach Vibes

Alexandria sits along the northern coast of Egypt. The city has beautiful golden-sand beaches kissed by the sapphire-blue waters of the Mediterranean fit for sunseekers. One of the prettiest and cleanest beaches is Mamoura Beach, beloved by locals looking to take a break from the bustle of the city. Ice cream and food stands line the quaint cobblestone boardwalk that runs along the beach, and you'll find ample options to rent loungers and umbrellas.

Don't miss Alexandria's fusion cuisine.

LOCAL CUISINE

You'll find delicious food throughout Egypt, but cities along the northern coast — like Alexandria — offer a unique and flavorful fusion of Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean flavors. Snack on some crispy falafel, foul fava bean dip, and warm Baladi bread. You'll find this fare at cafes throughout the city. Or head to Alexandria's seafood market for some amazing catches — shop owners will cook them for you on-site for a small fee. And if you're craving something hearty, try some of Alexandria's famous fondue, typically made from seven kinds of cheese and paired with different meats.

Alexandria's souk district is a treasure trove of unique finds

The best places to shop during cruises to Alexandria, Egypt, are traditional souks — labyrinthine bazaars where artisans, spice traders, jewelers and more display and sell their wares. Alexandria's souk district is located at the westernmost point of Midan Tahrir. This area is always bustling. Its cafes, bakeries and stalls buzz with energy around the clock, especially at night. You'll find everything here including beautifully woven cloth, bangles, souvenirs and sundries.

JUST A PSA for anyone wanting to cruise to Israel.

We are booked on the 11 day Israel/Egypt cruise in March of 2025 and just got notified that it was changed to a Greek Isle Cruise.

https://www.celebritycruises.com/cruises?search=departurePort:ATH|startDate:2025-03-01~2025-03-31

Looks like this might end up being the way for all of 2025 at this point.

No surprise!

Canal transit not safe..

The original cruise had no Canal transit.  It was Athens > Haifa > Jerusalem (Overnight)> Alexandria (Overnight)> Ephesus>Athens

But I totally understand the changes considering what is going on. I am a little surprised the decision is being made over a year out but it's probably easier to make port arrangements now than waiting until 6 months out.  I'm assuming at this point all 2025 Israel cruises will be changed.

I'm really just wondering if the pricing for this cruise will drop now that its a Greek Isle cruise.

Pushka

It will certainly change whether people decide to cancel as this is a completely different cruise and likely one people have already completed. We were very lucky to have cruised through the Red Sea and Suez Canal transit, Israel, Egypt and Jordan just over six months ago. Hard to believe it's changed so much. There's no comparison.

Like

too bad.. no canal transit a big plus but it's just not  safe.. the alt itin is very nice but  just not the same!

They did this year when the itineraries were changed, but that was at a far later date to fill the ship. Perhaps that’s why X has decided to do it earlier this year: keep the prices higher rather than having to discount so heavily at a later date? We shall see. From a personal point of view, it would be nice for the prices to be comparable with the Caribbean pricing as it is Greece in closed season.

Were you offered any compensation or the option to cancel and get a refund? We're booked on the same cruise in 2026. It's a long way off so probably not affected but I'm curious.

lexmiller

The only "for sure" way to see Egypt is by booking a land tour or booking a Nile River cruise.  Ocean cruise ships are not going there for the foreseeable future due to the activity in that part of the Med.  And to see Israel as a tourist would seem impossible period for who knows how long due to the unfortunate strife in the region.  So if you really want to go to Egypt, booking an ocean voyage is extremely iffy - be ready to be disappointed.  We were booked on the Oct 16, 2023 cruise out of Athens which was supposed to have gone to Egypt and Israel, but became a Greek Isles cruise due to the Hamas attacks - substitute ports were Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Crete, Cyprus, and Bodrum in Turkey.  Someone above mentioned a reduction in price for the complete change of plan but there was no reduction, no credit, no recompense whatsoever.

Our September 2024 cruise on this same itinerary was changed in December (2023). We were offered the opportunity to keep the cruise and get a $200 credit ($400 for retreat), move deposit to another cruise, or cancel for a full refund.

We booked the same basic itinerary for 2025. If they change it again we will just cancel.

The prices were reduced over here for the current winter season redeployment of Infinty. I’m not referring to those already booked on the Egypt & Israel cruises, I think on my sailing they were offered OBC, but the prices for the new itineraries were heavily discounted. The insides started at approx £440pp and balconies were £699 for the 10 night sailings.

Many months ago, we booked the April 15 sailing out of Athens for the Israel/Egypt cruise and then came the tragedy of the war. No surprise the itinerary was changed to Greek Isles. Celebrity offered us a free cancellation with all deposits returned in cash or $200 OBC if we stuck with the April 15 sailing. Unfortunately, we had non-refundable air tickets to/from Athens on dates coinciding with the ship schedule so we decided what the heck, stay with the cruise and, hey, maybe it'll be OK. So that's what we're doing.

I'm curious what airline and fare you booked that doesn't allow cancellations. Almost all major airlines now allow one to cancel a flight and receive future flight credit usually good for 1 year.

Could be a Canadian airline 😉

You have pay extra to get a fair with a change ,

100$ of OBC per room.  We were almost 10 months out from final payment.  We ended up canceling, not because the itinerary but life stuff had changed and it would have been challenging to make it work.  Plus we figured the prices of these cruises will drop as all the Israel/Egypt cruises are now Greek isles.  So if we want to jump on at a later date we might get a better deal.

We will do a b2b in just over a week to the Greek islands which was originally the holy land and Alexandria.Price went down on the cruises a lot but couldn’t get a price drop even before final payment I booked with a Uk company as a package. I’m not sure if I made the right decision to keep the alternative cruises, in March and closed season, but we have been lucky to have sailed both itineraries before.Be nice to escape this cold weather.

Not so much in the UK, I’ve been caught out a couple of times with cancelled cruises and airlines would not allow change without a considerable fee.

You’ll have to let us know what it’s like when you board as we’re on your second leg 👍 . We’re still not received our flight details from X yet; apparently, 10 days prior to sailing, they inform us of the locator number etc. 🤞🏻 .

@di T  What have your first impressions been of Infinity? Have you noticed any of the recent upgrades to the ship?

Rick&Jeannie

Rick&Jeannie

We were due to have sailed on the Infinity last month on an Israel/Egypt cruise.  We canceled before final payment after all of the fighting started.  Thank goodness for refundable deposit/insurance.  We have now shifted over to a Japan itinerary on the Millennium later this year.

Well it’s our first time on this ship so can’t say much about upgrades, still got the shower curtain lol! But we have sailed many time on the same class so easy to navigate, staff are great as always, old menus are back so better than Reflection in September 2023.  Having a good time though the weather would of been warmer with the original itinerary, have booked two cruises while onboard for next year so that speaks for itself.I am sure you will enjoy the next cruise we are sailing 2/3rds full so nice! Dianne

Thanks

Glad you are having a super time. I do hope it’s only 2/3rds full when we join you next week 🤞🏻 . We’re definitely looking forward to some R&R.

We are also on this cruise next week….we too are hoping it will just be two thirds full!   🤞 Just pondering what to take clothes wise…..decisions, decisions on whether it’s going to be sunny! 😎

Greek Judge Refers Nine Egyptians to Trial Over Deadly Migrant Shipwreck

ATHENS (Reuters) - Nine Egyptian men who were on board a migrant boat that sank off Greece last year, killing hundreds of people, are to face trial next month, accused of people smuggling, Greek judicial sources said on Friday.

The circumstances of the sinking of the Adriana in June remain a source of dispute between the Greek authorities and groups supporting the rights of survivors and migrants - meaning the trial could be the first opportunity to officially hear the accounts of some of those present at the time.

War in Israel and Gaza

Survivors have accused the Greek coastguard of capsizing the boat. The authorities, which monitored Adriana for hours, say it overturned when a coastguard vessel was about 70 metres away. The coastguard service has denied any wrongdoing.

It remains unclear what happened in the time between the coastguard being alerted to the presence of the vessel and when it capsized.

In a report in December, EU border agency Frontex - which had spotted the boat from the air before the coastguard - said that Greek authorities failed to reply to its follow-up calls and its offers for assistance. It said it could not conclude what caused the Adriana to capsize.

The overcrowded fishing trawler was carrying hundreds of migrants from Pakistan, Syria and Egypt when it sank off the southern town of Pylos, in international waters, on its way from Libya to Italy. Some 104 men survived and only 82 bodies have been recovered.

It was the worst disaster in years and again highlighted the dangers for migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

The nine Egyptian men, in pre-trial detention since June, have been charged with causing the incident, participating in a criminal organisation, migrant smuggling and other charges, one of the sources told Reuters. They have denied any wrongdoing. The trial is set to begin on May 21 in Kalamata.

Rights groups have opposed their detention.

"These survivors deserve support, not persecution. It's time to drop the charges," said NGO Legal Centre Lesvos.

Last year survivors recounted how a doomed attempt by the Greek coastguard to tow the trawler capsized the vessel. Their statements contradict the accounts of the Greek government and the coastguard, which said the boat had refused assistance.

In September, 40 survivors filed a lawsuit against Greek authorities accusing them of failing to intervene to rescue those on board and causing the vessel to capsize.
