ELTON JOHN AND BILLY JOEL: TWO LEGENDARY PIANO MEN TEAM UP FOR A CONCERT TOUR DE FORCE. `NOW IS THIS A COOL IDEA OR WHAT?'

By deseret news , jim rayburn, staff writer.

WITH "YANKEE DOODLE DANDY" playing in the background, Billy Joel, wearing a black suit and shirt, wanders with long, slow strides onto the MGM Grand Garden Theater stage in Las Vegas. After a few waves to a cheering audience, the Long Island native turns and gestures across the stage.

Out of the darkness, to a tune only the British would recognize, waggles the round-nosed and bespectacled Elton John. Dressed in a bright yellow leather suit and red cowboy boots, the 48-year-old piano master is displaying a touch of his flamboyant past.Standing in front of two 9-foot black grand pianos, Joel and John acknowledge the crowd's greeting. John turns to the gray-bearded piano man across the stage and bows. Joel responds with a salute. With signs of mutual respect now given for almost three decades of cranking out one piano hit after another, it's time for the two musical legends to get down to business.

Without a word the two sit at their respective stools, look over the ivory keys, face-to-face, and tickle out "Your Song" - John's signature tune. The two singers alternate verses and give a double-dose of piano. Before doing the same with his hit "Honesty," Joel turns to the screaming audience and sums up what every John/Joel fan feels.

"Now is this a cool idea or what?"

The cool idea popped into Joel's head two years ago. He wanted to put together the dream team of piano, kind of like Michael, Larry and Magic hitting the hardwood together. After all, the media has compared the two for years as the kings of keyboard.

"I've wanted to work with Elton for a long time and now it has finally come together for us," Joel says in the concert program.

John was receptive to the idea, but because of busy and conflicting schedules the tour took more than a year to put together. Joel was busy with his "River of Dreams" tour and John was working on "The Lion King" soundtrack.

"You don't turn down the opportunity to tour with another great piano player," John said.

THE TOUR HAS been worth it, both to the two performers and their fans. While tours by the Eagles and Rolling Stones have garnered the attention from morning talk shows, news telecasts, television shopping networks, MTV and VH-1, the John/Joel tour is quietly and slowly becoming one of the most prolific in music history.

The two piano pounders began the tour last summer on the East Coast, playing to 21 sold-out stadium crowds. Performance magazine awarded the tour its Tour Package of the Year. Concert Pulse ranked it as the top 1994 summer tour, grossing nearly $2.9 million per stop and averaging nearly 63,000 fans at each show. The John/Joel "Face to Face" tour resumed March 22 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego and will end 11 shows later with concerts April 13 and April 14 at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami.

Compared with other superstar tours, the John/Joel tour is reasonably priced. With the exception of the two Las Vegas shows, the only indoor stops on the tour, tickets are normally priced below $50. Fans basically get two concerts for the price of one.

The tour's success is not surprising - just look at the duo's credentials. Billy Joel's 15 albums have sold more than 50 million copies over 25 years. Most of his albums and singles have ended up atop the charts. He's won dozens of music awards, including six Grammys.

Since debuting at the Troubadour Club in Los Angeles in 1970, Elton John has been the most productive pop artist in music history. He's the only artist ever to have a top 40 hit for 25 consecutive years, surpassing Elvis Presley, who did it for 23 consecutive years. His 30 albums have sold more than 100 million copies. In 1971 he had four albums in the top 10 at one time. A member of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, John recently won an Oscar and a Grammy Award for the "Lion King" hit "Can You Feel the Love Tonight."

On the footsteps of Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, John and Joel are the ones who finished bringing the piano-playing vocalist to the forefront of rock 'n' roll. With the exception of Bruce Hornsby's one-year dethroning attempt, the two have ruled piano rock 'n' roll since the early '70s.

But while the media have painted a picture of rivalry between the two artists, John and Joel say it doesn't exist. They've even talked and joked about the comparisons. The two have a close camaraderie and mutual respect for each other's work. And both got most of their inspiration from the same source - the Beatles.

"We had a mutual admiration society," Joel told the Boston Globe prior to a concert at Foxboro Stadium. "Every time we'd see each other I'd say, `Oh, I loved it when you did this.' And he'd say, `Oh, I loved it when you did that.' "

THEIR SHOW BEGINS with three duets, after which Joel departs to "see ya later." John and his band play alone for about 90 minutes, broken up by a 5-minute solo performance by Ray Cooper, the peculiar mad scientist-looking percussionist who can play every instrument, including the coconuts off "Gilligan's Island." Joel returns once during the show's first half to join John in a rendition of "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues."

After a short intermission, Joel returns with his band to perform 11 songs. John, now wearing a bright green leather suit, returns once to join Joel for a duet performance of "My Life." Each performs a tribute to the other by playing one of the other's songs. John performs "New York State of Mind" and Joel does "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

"It's natural to have two piano players trade riffs and sort of see how each other's style melds," Joel said. "Our styles are different, but we can play similar to each other as well."

Joel is more "The Entertainer" and more personal with the audience, straying from the piano during several songs to dance and twirl the microphone stand like a baton. John stays at home, devoting his performance to piano-playing mastery by adding key-pounding solos to most songs.

The encore is what everyone paid good money to see, the two performing eight songs together. They even honor their predecessors with renditions of "Great Balls of Fire," "Lucille" and "A Hard Day's Night." Almost four hours and 37 songs later, the concert ends with the most fitting song, a duet performance of "Piano Man."

The two performers' moods are evident in the show. Joel, who's been on the road since his world tour began in September 1993 and has faced public scrutiny in his divorce from supermodel Christie Brinkley, is obviously exhausted. But fans can tell the tour with John is rejuvenating. Still, Joel says his world touring days are over when the concerts with John are finished. He plans to devote most of his future to writing and composing.

On the other hand, John's new life is written all over his face. Having overcome drug and alcohol addiction and fresh off his success with "The Lion King" soundtrack, John performs with the same enthusiasm he displayed in the '70s. He leaves little doubt that his music is the thread that's held his life together the past three decades, and he's having fun.

When the John/Joel tour is over, John will embark on a world tour of his own to promote his new album "Made in England." The tour will start in Europe and return to the United States in late summer. A spokesman at United Concerts said the company is trying to lure John for a fall concert date in Salt Lake City.

Now the bad news for those who didn't travel to Las Vegas to catch the duo perform: Joel's spokeswoman in New York says no albums, singles or videos are planned from the concert tour.

Flashback: Elton John and Billy Joel Perform ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’

  • By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Elton John and Billy Joel first hit the road together in 1995, and concert promoters around the planet instantly realized the combination was ridiculously lucrative. They appealed to the same fanbase, and people were willing to scale the nosebleeds in stadiums (or drop a small fortune for gold circle seats) to see the two piano icons share a stage. Most shows began with a series of duets, followed by solo sets by both artists before concluding with even more duets. They always wrapped it up, of course, with “Piano Man.”

The duo toured off and on for years but, in the summer of 2010, Billy Joel pulled out of a planned summer tour. Tickets had yet to go on sale, but venues had been put on hold and the change of plans left Elton scrambling to book other gigs. He wasn’t happy and, in 2011, he vented his frustration to Rolling Stone . “ Billy’s a conundrum,” he said.  “We’ve had so many canceled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism. . . He’s going to hate me for this, but every time he’s gone to rehab, they’ve been rehab light. When I went to rehab, I had to clean the floors. He goes to rehab where they have TVs.”

Billy Joel was not happy being publicly blasted and they haven’t shared a stage since. Here’s a video of them singing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” at Madison Square Garden in 2000.

This Is Why Elton John And Billy Joel Stopped Touring Together

Elton John and Billy Joel

Elton John and Billy Joel , two of rock's greatest piano men, spent 16 years touring together. This dynamic duo proved to be a winning combination for the fans, and these joint concerts were pretty lucrative for them. According to Touring Data, the pair brought in more than $21 million in ticket sales for only 12 concerts on their 2010 "Face to Face" tour. So what led to the end of this creative collaboration?

All the drama seems to have started in 2010 when Joel reportedly canceled a summer tour. And John's comment to the press that "Billy just wants to take a year off" only added fuel to the cancellation rumor (via Rolling Stone ). This led to speculation that the pair were on the outs. But according to Joel, there was no backstage conflict, nor was there ever any tour planned. "The truth is, there's nothing going on. I had made up my mind a long time ago that I wasn't going to work this year," he said.

Elton John started a war of words

Things between Billy Joel and Elton John may have been fine after the summer tour issues, but their relationship must have taken a hit the following year. John gave an interview to Rolling Stone magazine in 2011, in which he called out Joel for his drinking and criticized his music career. He said that Joel was "coasting" by not writing new music and complained that "we've had so many canceled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism." John believed that he was dishing out some "tough love" and rebuked Joel for the types of treatment facilities he went to, calling them "rehab light." He encouraged Joel "to do something better than what you're doing now."

While the press made a big deal of the Elton John interview and his comments about Joel, Joel himself seemed to take these comments in stride. He said that "I've worked with Elton for such a long time, and I've enjoyed our relationship too much to let something as random as these comments change my affection for him" (via Rolling Stone ). As Joel later explained to Entertainment Weekly , John "runs off at the mouth and regrets it later."

Elton John and Billy Joel still friends

Behind the scenes, Billy Joel was wrestling with some health issues that were more pressing than Elton John's off-the-cuff comments. He told the Daily Mail , "The last few gigs I did with Elton I could barely walk. ... canes on stage is not good." Joel ended up having his hips replaced to improve his mobility. But even when he got better, Joel wasn't interested in reuniting with John. After 16 years of performing together, Joel explained, "I got tired of doing the same show over and over again." So, at least according to Joel, boredom caused the breakup of this musical team. Elton, however, squarely attributed their parting of ways to Joel's personal issues, especially his battle with alcoholism. In his memoir, "Me," John wrote, "I just couldn't stand to watch a nice guy doing that to himself any longer" (via Variety ).

Apparently, there's no lingering animosity between the two musical legends. Joel told Entertainment Weekly that he and John had mended their friendship years ago. "We sat down, and I was like, 'Don't throw your friends under the bus.'" John launched his Farewell Yellow Brick Road in 2018, and Joel hasn't ruled out making a guest appearance on stage with him. He told Rolling Stone that he would sing with John "if he asked me to." Joel, who has a residency at New York's Madison Square Garden, has no intentions of following in John's footsteps to retirement.

Billy Joel And Elton John Have A Long And Tangled History, But Are They Friends Today?

Elton John and Billy Joel were rock's biggest package tour until they seemingly parted under disputed circumstances.

  • Elton John and Billy Joel were rumored to have had a falling out in 2011, with John criticizing Joel's live set and choice of rehab facilities.
  • Despite the rumors, Joel accepted John's critical remarks as tough love and noted that John tends to shoot from the hip in interviews.
  • The two piano men had a successful concert partnership called Face to Face, with eight world tours between 1994 and 2010, grossing millions of dollars.

Elton John and Billy Joel are rock's two most famous piano men of the last half-century. Elton has nine US No. 1 hits to his name. Joel has three. Combined, they've placed 113 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Between 1994 and 2010, the two stars joined forces on eight world tours dubbed Face to Face. By 2011, however, it was all over. Billy Joel and Elton John were rumored to have had a falling out, though they later patched things up.

For a time, rumors circulated that Billy Joel and Elton John had a falling out.

In 2011, a year after reported concert cancelations between the two icons, Elton made some critical remarks about the "Allentown" singer, who struggled with alcohol and hadn't made a studio album since 1993's River of Dreams .

John criticized Joel's stagnant live set and choice of rehab facilities, which the "Tiny Dancer" singer deemed "rehab light."

Despite talk of a rift between the two legends, Joel (who's rolled with many punches in his five-decade-plus-year career) accepted John's comments as tough love . He notes that John (whose public rows with Madonna and George Michael were tabloid fodder) has a history of shooting from the hip in interviews.

Billy Joel Doesn't Like The Sound Of His Own Voice, But What Does He Actually Think About His Best Songs?

Though the two piano men ended their Face to Face concert series after the 2010 tour, they never ruled out a future joint live appearance.

In 2014, Joel began a monthly residency at New York's Madison Square Garden. He earned $150 million during the first five years of the residency, which ends in July 2024.

In 2018, John began his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which spanned 80 countries and five years. By the time Elton wrapped the tour on July 8, 2023, it had grossed $939.1 million.

Rocket Man Vs Piano Man

Elton John in the "Sad Songs" video

Elton John (born March 25, 1947, London) and Billy Joel (born May 9, 1949, New York) both got their starts in the mid-1960s.

John (then known as Reginald Dwight) first performed as a pianist in the R&B/beat group Bluesology. Joel (at 14) played un-credited piano behind rock's first bad girls, the Shangri-Las, on their two big hits "Leader of the Pack" and "Remember (Walkin' In the Sand)."

Both emerged as piano-playing singers at the dawn of the 1970s, just as a new breed of solo acoustic singer/songwriters (James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot) challenged the prevailing standard of the electrified rock band.

Elton John had his first transatlantic hit with "Your Song," a tender love-letter ballad. His subsequent singles ("Tiny Dancer," "Levon") remain anthems of FM radio. A flood of hits followed his fifth studio album, Honky Château , starting with the 1972 singles "Rocket Man" and "Crocodile Rock" (hit first No. 1).

John ruled the charts with his 1973–75 albums Goodbye Yellow Brick Road , Caribou , and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy . His biggest hits from the period include "Daniel," "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." At one point, Elton was tired of his saturation of American radio .

In 1975, Elton starred in the movie adaptation of the Who's rock opera Tommy .

After a late-'70s commercial slump, John recovered with a run of '80s hits, including "Blue Eyes," "I'm Still Standing," "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," "Sad Songs," and "Sacrifice." In 1982, Elton paid tribute to his late friend John Lennon in the emotional ballad "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)."

Billy Joel burned through some low-profile psychedelic rock bands (The Hassles, Attila) before he launched his solo career in 1971 with Cold Spring Harbor . His next three albums contained songs that later became popular, including "New York State of Mind," "Say Goodbye to Hollywood," and his signature "Piano Man."

Joel shot to fame with his 1977 album The Stranger and the hits "Anthony's Song (Moving Out)," "Just the Way You Are," and "She's Always a Woman." His subsequent albums 52nd Street and Glass Houses sprayed radio playlists with "Big Shot," "My Life," "You May Be Right," and "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me."

After his experimental art-pop album The Nylon Curtain (best known for the working class anthem "Allentown" and the Vietnam War lament "Goodnight Saigon"), Joel hit his commercial peak with 1983's An Innocent Man , a collection of pre-Beatles-style retro pop, including doo-wop ("The Longest Time"), Motown ("Tell Her About It"), '50s boogie ("Keeping the Faith"), and the Four Seasons tribute "Uptown Girl."

Joel made three more pop-rock albums, including 1989's mega-seller Storm Front , but focused on classical music after 1993.

While proud of his legacy, Billy Joel has certain songs that he'd scrub from memory .

Elton John and Billy Joel joined forced in 1994 with their Face to Face tour, a series of joint concerts. Each show began with three duet numbers, followed by separate sets by John and Joel and a joint encore.

They traded select numbers in their solo sets. On most nights, Elton performed "New York State of Mind" and Billy performed "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." The 1994 tour grossed $48.4 million.

Christie Brinkley Blushes as Ex Billy Joel Serenades Her With 'Uptown Girl'

This old flame still burns.

elton john & billy joel tour 1995

Decades after their divorce, Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel's relationship is still the thing of romance novels.

The old flames, who have been separated for 30 years, shared a sweet, nostalgic moment on Friday during Joel's concert at his "office," Madison Square Garden.

In a video posted to TikTok, the Sports Illustrated model grins ear to ear while dancing to her ex-husband belting out his catchy 1983 hit song "Uptown Girl." To complement her radiant smile, Brinkley wore a dazzling metallic blue button-down shirt.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen , Joel's ex-girlfriend Elle Macpherson shared the singer started writing "Uptown Girl" while they were an item and living together. However, midway through the process, they broke up, and Joel started dating Brinkley instead. From there, Brinkley became the subject of the bop and even starred in the official music video .

In another special moment from the night, which Brinkley shared on Instagram, the couple's daughter Alexa Ray joined her father on stage to sing "Say Goodbye to Hollywood."

"Thanks for singing us a song @billyjoel and @alexarayjoel You’ve got us feeling alright! Just a few snippets from a magical evening at the garden!" Brinkley wrote in the caption.

Joel and Brinkley tied the knot on March 23, 1985, and welcomed Alexa Ray on December 29, 1985. After nine years of marriage, they called it quits in 1994. Brinkley later married Richard Taubman in 1994 before splitting in 1995, and then Peter Cook in 1996 before splitting in 2008. Joel, meanwhile, was married to Katie Lee from 2004 to 2009 before marrying Alexis Roderick, who he is still with today.
