Eminem and Kendrick Lamar – review

I t’s been 13 years since The Marshall Mathers LP offended practically everyone with its cartoonish violence, questionable misogyny, homophobic slurs, and dick jokes. And while Eminem is no longer the stuff of newspaper headlines, he’s lost none of the potency that made him such a revelation to teenagers coming of age in the early-2000s – and such an impediment to those coming out .

Headlining his very own five-act Rapture tour – which was less a festival, and more a half-day showcase of top-notch hip-hop talent – the 41-year- old rapper showed all of his sides in a scatterbrain 90-minute show at Melbourne’s 50,000-capacity Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

He was “on” from the moment he first stalked the stage – and he really had to be following Kendrick Lamar . Having made one of the all-time great rap debut albums in 2012’s good kid, m.A.A.d city , last year 26-year-old from Compton laid down the gauntlet to the entire hip-hop world on Big Sean’s 2013 track Control , and he lived up to every diss, put-down and all the braggadocio in that controversial verse.

Live, Lamar made virtuosity look easy, spitting out those rapidfire syllables on Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe , while retaining a smooth, purposeful flow. In concert, the rich imagery and confrontational vignettes from good kid, m.A.A.d city were elevated to another level. The superbass literally pumped through the crowd’s chest, and when he dropped Swimming Pools (Drank) early in the set, the audience went nuts.

good kid, m.A.A.d city, he said, isn’t just a reflection of himself, but “everybody out there who goes through shit”. And with that, thousands of smartphone “lighters” were raised in the air as Sing About Me brought the set to a poignant close.

Poignancy isn’t what sold Eminem all those records, but that’s the difference between his hyper-real Slim Shady persona and the middle-aged rapper we see now. He still cuts a mean figure, with his ripped body and sleeve tattoos, and was ably flanked by his man mountain of a hype-man, ex-D12 member Mr Porter (who had his name, in case we forgot, tattooed on his arm). The pair’s “comedic” interludes were the only part of the show that came off as unnatural and over-rehearsed. Mr Porter would set them up with something like, “How many of you have been with us since [2010’s] Recovery ?” And the rapper would respond with: “That’s a lot of people I’ve fucked up.”

Eminem kept the chainsaw at home for the cheery ode Kill You, but the jarring gunshot at the end of the track meant he still meant business. The spitfire verses on Rap God were delivered with AK-47 intensity, and he powered through a couple verses of Stan, before a medley of early hits like My Name Is and The Real Slim Shady (with a self-deprecating backdrop of his high school yearbook photos).

But for all his grimacing and those thousand-yard stares, Eminem may be a softie at heart. Love the Way You Lie , his 2010 duet with Rihanna (whose voice was mimicked/mimed by one of his back-up singers), was even prefaced by a dedication to all the women in the crowd, suggesting that even rappers notorious for their misogyny can’t keep it up all the time.

He closed the set with two of his most rousing anthems: Not Afraid , which he offered to “anybody who lost someone to addiction”, and Lose Yourself , which really is the Eye of the Tiger of our time. Eminem may have built his myth on exaggerated violence and faux thuggery, but this is where the real Slim Shady’s at right now.

Eminem's Rapture tour has so far been nothing short of a full-blown spectacle, and the US rap superstar's Wellington show was no exception.

More than 46,000 fans packed Westpac stadium, breaking all the venue's previous attendance records, to experience the sheer power and energy of the rapper's live show in his only New Zealand gig and first visit to the capital.

The event eclipsed all previous audience sizes at the stadium and was the fastest sellout concert for the venue as well the biggest single-day event in its history.

The notoriously elusive Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, who broke onto the music scene 20 years ago with albums "The Slim Shady LP" and "The Marshall Mathers LP" was older than many of his Kiwi fans, although it didn't show in the way he bounded athletically around the stage, and there were plenty there who would have remembered the impact his music had when it first came out.

Following opening acts Boogie, Royce Da 5'9 and Aussie hip hop chart toppers The Hilltop Hoods, Mathers delivered a powerhouse performance that charted the course of his varied career and showcased the dynamic and distinctive rapping style that propelled him to worldwide acclaim two decades ago.

If there was any doubt as to whether Mathers still deserves his place on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest artists of all time, it was dispelled by the self-styled Rap God's delivery of the complex rhymes, word-play, wit and sheer audacity that characterise his music.

The performance saw a collaboration between the rapper and his "hype" partner, known only as Mr Porter, who wove rhymes around Mathers and took every opportunity to pump up the crowd and name drop Wellington in between tracks. They didn't really need the help though, with half the city probably able to hear their roars of appreciation carrying on the uncharacteristically still night air.

Working through the different phases of his music, Mathers kicked off the show with "Greatest", followed by "Won't Back Down", before "Kill You" prompted the first major crowd singalong on first mention of Mathers' Slim Shady former alter ego.

"Rap God" proved beyond any doubt the rapper can put his money where his mouth is, as he executed a perfect live rendition of the track that holds the record for the most words ever used in a rap. The speed and verbal dexterity with which Mathers shot words across the stadium had anyone left sitting down, up on their feet.

Tracks from his most recent album "Kamikaze", such as "Lucky You", also prompted big crowd responses but the energy ramped up in the stadium for "Stan" and "Love The Way You Lie", with the ethereal Skylar Grey delivering spine-tingling vocals in place of Dido and Rihanna, and a live orchestra adding to the sound resonating around the stadium.

Moving back into more humorous territory, a medley of hits from Mathers' Slim Shady phase, which he described as when he was "still f**ked up on cocaine and meth," got the enormous crowd pumping. After finishing with "Not Afraid", the encore track "Lose Yourself" saw plenty do just that, and the reason the tour was named Rapture, if it wasn't already obvious, was clearly revealed.

SLIM Shady is back again.

Australian promoter TEG Dainty has confirmed global rap star Eminem will bring his Rapture tour Down Under for a second time, announcing a five-show stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand in February.

Confidential revealed last week that the promoter had approached venues in Brisbane to host the February 20 concert, which will be held at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC).

Suncorp Stadium was forced to decline the offer due to a busy event schedule.

The Rapture tour will begin in Brisbane and then head to Sydney and Melbourne and first ever shows in Perth and Wellington, New Zealand.

Eminem’s Australian fanbase has been lobbying for tour dates to be added in the region.

Special guests will be announced shortly for this second instalment of the Rapture 2019 stadium tour.

In August, the 15-time Grammy award winner and biggest-selling rapper of all time surprised fans with an unannounced 10th studio album Kamikaze , which spent four straight weeks on top of the ARIA albums charts.

Eminem last visited Australia for 2014’s Rapture tour which sold-out at stadiums around the country, including Suncorp Stadium.

TEG Dainty president and CEO Paul Dainty said Eminem is a global superstar and his live shows were phenomenal.

“We’re proud to once again present his Australian tour,” he said.

Tickets for Eminem’s Rapture tour go on sale at 2pm next Monday, October 22, at Ticketek.

A VISA cardholder pre-sale will begin at 10am from this Wednesday to Friday.

Eminem, Kendrick Lamar Team for "Rapture" Tour

Once he wraps up the Yeezus tour , Kendrick Lamar will have another big opening role. Billboard reports that he'll join Eminem in New Zealand and Australia in February for a tour called "Rapture" . J. Cole is also on the bill, as are Australian artist 360 and New Zealand rapper David Dallas.

Eminem's new album, The Marshall Mathers LP2 , is out on November 5 via  Aftermath / Interscope . Kendrick Lamar guests on a track on the album called "Love Game". Read Craig Jenkins' recent piece on Eminem's return in a post-Kendrick era.

Eminem Announces Tour Dates With Kendrick Lamar And J. Cole

Looks like Kendrick Lamar is staying busy. After serving as the opener for Kanye West's ongoing Yeezus tour , the current XXL cover-star will hit the road for a string of dates opening for the "Rap God" himself: Eminem. Following the release of the Marshall Mathers LP 2 toward the end of the year, Eminem will head to Australia and New Zealand for four dates in February.

As Billboard explains, the dates are being marketed as "Rapture" shows with multiple openers. In addition to Lamar, Eminem will be joined by J. Cole, Action Bronson, Australian rapper 360, New Zealand artist David Dallas and, according to Fake Shore Drive , Chicago's Chance The Rapper. The tour will kick off with Eminem's first ever show in New Zealand, before hitting up three stadiums in Australia.

There were only seven Eminem shows in 2019 but it was enough to bring him on top of the list of hip-hop successful touring acts.

These shows grossed 42,8 million dollars and this is the highest touring earnings in hip–hop industry last year.

In terms of the number of tickets sold, Travis Scott holds an advantage on Eminem with 50,000 tickets. However, if you remember that he did 28 shows during the second leg of the Astroworld Tour in 2019 it doesn’t look as if Eminem lost to him anymore.

Eminem announces first tour dates of 2019

He is planning a stadium tour down under

Eminem has announced his first tour dates for 2019.

The Detroit rapper will bring his ‘Rapture’ tour to Australian stadiums in February, performing his latest album ‘Kamikaze’. Eminem last toured Australia in 2014. Tickets are available here .
