25. Leaning Tower of Pisa

The world-famous leaning tower is known around the globe for its incredible four-degree tilt that makes it seem as if the tower is about to topple over. The amazing slanted belltower sits behind Pisa Cathedral and was built in the Romanesque style.

Dating back to the 12th century, the tower took a whopping 199 years to complete, but began to slant during its construction due to soft ground on one side. Today, the tower – which stands at a wonky 55.86 meters tall – attracts tourists from far and wide who want to catch sight of the tower and snap pictures of themselves in front of it.

The arteries of the old town, the canals of Bruges have long been the roadways that connect the city. Though a few valuables were taken through the centuries, the site was rediscovered and has been excavated since 1764. Nowadays, visitors can walk around the ancient city and marvel at preserved colorful murals and see the plaster casts of people and animals in their final moments.

21. Meteora

Meaning “elevated” in Greek, Meteora is a jutting rock formation in Thessaly, Greece – a wild landscape made up of hill-like boulders that dominate the skyline. Part of what makes that magnificent landscape so amazing, however, are the monasteries that precariously cling to the rocks.

Set on cliffs with staircases cut into the very stone itself, this religious site dates back to the 15th century, and some still welcome visitors to this day. The most famous of all, the Holy Trinity Monastery, perches an amazing 400 meters atop a natural rock tower and is a breathtaking sight to set eyes on.

20. Sagrada Familia

Officially the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, this famously opulent church in Barcelona is the brainchild of the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. With work starting on the church back in 1882, 137 years later, the Sagrada still remains unfinished. It is expected that the building will be completed in 2026.

Built in the art nouveau and gothic styles, the fantastical church has an impressive eight spires and ten that are yet to be constructed. This decidedly Gaudi-esque building draws crowds of tourists with twisting turrets, and surreal curves, while intriguing gargoyles make for something from another world and time entirely.

19. Tallinn Old City

Once part of the trading alliance the Hanseatic League, Tallinn was formerly an extremely prosperous city. The riches of Tallin’s past can be seen be in the Old City, which still retains its 13th-century city plan. One of the major sites in this cultural and historical heart of the Estonian capital is the Town Hall Square, home to the gothic Town Hall. 18. Tower Bridge

Often mistakenly thought to be London Bridge, Tower Bridge is a late Victorian masterpiece showcasing the height of London’s standing on the world stage. Opened in 1894, the bridge crosses the Thames close to the Tower of London, another London landmark.

The bridge itself is a drawbridge powered by engine rooms which are located in the neo-gothic north and south towers, making this a feat of 19th-century engineering. The bridge is still in use to this day and has even been modernized with lights that glimmer in the evening.

17. Neuschwanstein Castle

One of the architectural projects of “Mad” King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Neuschwanstein Castle is the quintessential fairytale castle. In fact, it was the castle’s soaring spires and romanesque revival style that inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Construction of the castle began in 1869, but sadly, Ludwig never got to live in his castle; he died in 1886, the same year of the castle’s completion. Set in South Bavaria among forested mountains and mirror-like lakes, the picturesque setting of the castle is as impressive as the building itself.

16. Mont Saint-Michel

This famous fortified island is located around a kilometer off the northwestern shores of Normandy , France. Walking around Mont-St-Michel might feel as if you have been transported back to another time; the monastery here dates back to the 8th century and is still in use today. The old walls and chapels are intriguing places to explore.

At high tide, waters make the island seem as if it is a floating fortress in the sea. Previously only reachable by foot or car during low tide, the island can be reached at any time on foot along a bridge built in 2014.

The island is home to the Church of the Assumption of Mary – a 17th-century building with some 15th-century gothic frescoes still intact.

13. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Arguably the most iconic sight in Russia, this twisting Cathedral with its multi-colored onion domes is set in Moscow’s equally iconic Red Square. St Basil’s Cathedral was also built by a very iconic man – Ivan the Terrible – in 1555.

The structure is a madly bright lollypop of strange styles that seem more like a funfair and look unlike anything else in Russia. Because of its unique architectural style and its historic links to a victorious battle in Tatarstan, the cathedral is a symbol of Russia.

Dating back to the 16th century, the stone walls boast baroque churches and crumbling buildings. 10. Eiffel Tower

Named after Gustave Eiffel, the unmistakable symbol of Paris is a sight that must be witnessed when visiting the French capital. Constructed between 1887 and 1889, the tower was originally built to be the impressive entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair. The tower stands at 324 meters tall and was amazingly the world’s tallest man-made structure until the Empire State Building took the title in 1930.

Take the lift all the way to the observation deck of the tower and marvel at the views of the Parisian boulevard and pattern of parks below. Or simply sit on the Champ de Mars and marvel at the lattice structure itself.

9. Prague Old Town

The medieval Old Town of the Czech Republic capital is bristling with historical sights, which is what makes it such a popular destination. At its heart is the Old Town Square, where you’ll find the Old Town Hall, boasting the Orloj – or Astronomical Clock – which dates back to 1410, making it the oldest clock still in operation in the world.

Connecting the Old Town with the Lesser Town of Prague across the Vltava River is the Charles Bridge. Construction on the bridge started in 1357 but wasn’t completed until the early 15th century. Around the Old Town, plenty of bars and a buzzing nightlife scene make for an enjoyable place to stick around after dark.

8. St. Peter’s Basilica

Located in Vatican City, St Peter’s Basilica is the biggest church in the world, and one of the most famous examples of Italian Renaissance architecture. Construction began on this monument in 1506, with one of the architects being none other than Michelangelo.

This is where the Pope himself addresses the tens of thousands of worshippers who crowd the adjacent St Peter’s Square. The current Basilica replaced the old St Peter’s Basilica, which stood in the same place from around 360 AD. The church itself is thought to be built over the tomb of St Peter.

Venice is the original canal city; every other canal city in the world is compared to Venice . The enigmatic waterlogged city is the site of more than 150 waterways and 400 bridges, including the famous Bridge of Sighs.

Versailles is a monument like no other; when it comes to palaces, Versailles definitely takes first place. This grandiose building was the main residence for French royalty from 1682 until the 1789 French Revolution.

Norway boasts over 1000 fjords, only a portion of which are visited en masse (like the Hardangerfjord and Geirangerfjord), meaning it’s still possible to find a slice of solitude. Taking a cruise ship is a great way to see the soaring walls of the fjords as the boat glides on the waters. Alternatively, hiking atop the fjords offers a birds-eye-view of the incredible landscape.

4. Alhambra

Built on the ruins of Roman fortifications in 889 AD, Alhambra is a combination palace and fortress situated in Granada , Spain. For almost 1,000 years, much of the Iberian peninsula was ruled by the Islamic Moors, with Andalusia (the area where Alhambra is located) being their longest-held territory.

Today, you can explore its citadel, the oldest part of the fortress, climb up its watchtower, explore the amazing Moorish gardens and courtyards, and be amazed at the delicate geometric patterns throughout the complex. The setting on the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada makes Alhambra that much more mystical.

3. Hagia Sophia

For almost 1,000 years, Hagia Sophia was the biggest cathedral in the world and is still a fantastic structure to set eyes on. Originally built as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral in 537 AD when Istanbul was named Constantinople, Hagia Sophia became an Ottoman mosque from 1453 and is today a museum for all faiths to enjoy.

The dome of the Hagia Sophia is a marvel in itself, and the building as a whole perfectly reflective of Byzantine architecture – as well as Istanbul’s patchwork heritage. Walking around the building today, you can piece together the history of the city with its intriguing murals and interesting artifacts.

2. Acropolis

The Acropolis in Athens is a simply stunning sight. This monumental hill is the location of a number of ancient sites that date back to the 5th century BC. Some of the attractions that crown the Acropolis include the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, and, of course, the Parthenon.

The Colosseum is the perfect symbol of the power of the Roman Empire at its height. The Eiffel Tower is one of France's most famous sights . Sitting in the heart of the Champ de Mars in Paris, the wrought-iron tower was originally built to serve as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair.

Engineer Gustave Eiffel received much criticism for his design, with people calling it a monstrosity and "an impossible task" - at the time of construction, the 324-meter-tall tower (equivalent to an 81-story building) was the tallest structure in the world.

The tower's three levels house restaurants and cafés, gift shops, exhibits about the history of the tower, the original restored office of Gustav Eiffel, and several observation decks. The first two levels of the Eiffel Tower can be accessed via a staircase or a lift, but the third level is only accessible to visitors via an elevator.

At night, the entire tower is illuminated with golden lights.

Rome's Flavian Amphitheater, better known as the Colosseum, remains one of the most iconic symbols of Imperial Rome and is one of the most visited tourist sites in Italy . It was built in AD 70-80 using travertine limestone and volcanic rock. At the time of its construction, and for a long time after, it was the world's largest amphitheater and held up to 80,000 spectators.

With an outer wall height of 48 meters and a base area of 24,000 square meters, the Colosseum is an imposing structure. At the peak of its glory, it contained a velarium (a retractable awning to protect spectators during bad weather) and a thick wooden floor covered by sand. Under this floor, an underground labyrinth of tunnels held animals and gladiators before the fights.

Although most famous as the site for gladiator fights, the Colosseum was also home to many other shows and spectacles, including re-enactments of famous battles and executions. More impressively, it was also the home of mock sea battles, when the arena was filled and drained rapidly with water so vessels could float during the shows.

Over the following centuries, the amphitheater served as a fortress, a shrine, and makeshift housing. It was also heavily looted by stone robbers.

The Acropolis of Athens with the Parthenon Temple on top of the hill at sunset

Watching over Athens from atop a rocky outcrop, the ancient citadel is one of Greece's most famous tourist destinations .

The Acropolis' most famous buildings were all constructed in the fifth century BC under the watchful eye of statesman and general Pericles.

The heart of the Acropolis is the Parthenon, a temple built to thank the gods for the victory over Persian invaders (though it also served as the city treasury for a time). Other prominent buildings include the gateway Propylaea (which serves as the entrance to Acropolis), the Erechtheion Temple (dedicated to Athena and Poseidon), and the tiny but beautiful Temple of Athena Nike.

Many of the buildings in the Acropolis were damaged during the Morean War in 1687. Most of the ancient artifacts found within the temples that survived the damage have been since moved to the Acropolis Museum nearby.

The prehistoric monument of Stonehenge is one of the most famous landmarks in the UK . Built between 3000 BC and 2000 BC, Stonehenge sits in an area of England known for its many burial mounds.

A massive ring of four-meter-tall sandstones with an inner horseshoe-shaped stone circle, the breathtaking Stonehenge and its surroundings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The purpose of Stonehenge remains a mystery. Archeologists believe it could have been a burial ground dating back to 3000 BC. It could have also served as a Neolithic calendar (as the layout of the stones is set to mark sun movements), a religious place, or a scientific observatory. The stones, which weigh an estimated 25 tons each, were transported at least 19 kilometers to their current location.

View over the Seine River to the Louvre Museum

The world's largest art museum, and the most visited, sits right on the bank of the Seine River. The original 13th-century Louvre Palace that once stood here was expanded and rebuilt over the centuries, resulting in the massive almost 73,000-square-meter building you see today.

Outside, the museum's glass and metal pyramid has become a modern symbol of the Louvre. It measures 34 meters on each side and 21.6 meters tall and is now used as the main entrance to the museum.

Of the Louvre's stunning collection of 380,000 objects, about 35,000 are on permanent display. These include not only paintings but also drawings, sculptures, and archaeological items. In addition to Leonardo da Vinci's La Mona Lisa and the Venus of Milo , the museum is also home to the eight-foot-tall Winged Victory of Samothrace sculpture and the magnificent six- by nine-meter Coronation of Napoleon painting.

Almost two million people visit Prague Castle every year, making it one of the most popular attractions in the Czech Republic . Recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest castle complex in the world, Prague Castle is a stunning combination of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles.

While the castle itself dates back to the 9th century, some of the other structures inside the 70,000 square meters of the complex were built centuries later. Some of the most stunning buildings within the Prague Castle complex include St. Vitus Cathedral, St. George's Basilica, and the 16th-century Golden Lane. This lane of small medieval houses once housed the palace guards and goldsmiths, and centuries later, writer Franz Kafka and Nobel prizewinner Jaroslav Seifert.

The Castle grounds are also home to the office of the President of the Czech Republic and to a secret room that holds the Bohemian Crown Jewels. The National Gallery has a small museum branch within the castle, and there's also a toy museum focused on wooden toys.

Built by orders of Prussian king Frederick William II in the 18th century, the Brandenburg Gate has become the symbol of Berlin. A massive 26 meters high and over 65 meters long, the gate is crowned by a quadriga or chariot drawn by four horses.

The gate owes its name to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel as it sits where the road connecting Berlin and Brandenburg town starts. Over the past two centuries, the gate has had center stage in many of the historical events that shaped Germany. It was used as a Nazi symbol and survived WWII despite heavy damage from explosions and shootings.

Years later, the gate became the unofficial border between East and West Berlin until the construction of the Berlin Wall. And when the Wall fell in 1989, 100,000 people gathered at the Gate to celebrate.

Italy's magical "floating city" has a wealth of beauty, romance, and history to please every visitor. Over 150 canals run through Venice, connecting 118 tiny islands via some 400 bridges and a number of walkways. A romantic gondola ride is one of the top things to do in Italy .

At 4,478 meters high, the Matterhorn is one of the highest summits in Europe. The stunning mountain sits right over the Swiss town of Zermatt , on the border between Switzerland and Italy. A popular hiking destination in the Alps, the Matterhorn is unique because it's a pyramid-shaped mountain that can be climbed on all four sides.

For the non-climbers out there, it's also possible to complete a 10-day trek around the mountain. This is considered one of the most beautiful hikes in the Alps, crossing glacial lakes, Alpine forests, and flowering meadows.

The area around the Matterhorn and Zermatt attracts skiers and snowboarders during winter, with the Zermatt and Breuil-Cervinia resort offering ski lifts high up the Theodul Pass. There's also the Matterhorn Museum , chronicling the fascinating history of Alpinism, and a chance for an up-close-and-personal view of the snow-covered peaks via a helicopter tour.

Aptly known as "the Venice of the North," Amsterdam is fueled by the many hundreds of kilometers of grachten (canals) that cut through the city. The city has three main canals - Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht - and over 1,500 bridges connecting the islands.

The Prinsengracht canal is probably the most famous canal in the Netherlands, as a number of notable buildings are situated along its shores. These include Anne Frank's house; Amsterdam's tallest church, Westerkerk; the 17th-century Deutzen Hofje house, and a number of other impressive historical constructions.

The Singelgracht canal, though not one of the largest, is well known for bordering the very upscale Jordaan neighborhood, where Rembrandt spent the last few years of his life.

Another famous canal, the Brouwersgrach, was once used by ships returning with spices from Asia. Today, it's a favorite canal to park houseboats, and it's flanked by warehouses that have been converted into chic, expensive apartments and lofts.

The House of Habsburg originally had the palace built in the 13th century to house one of the most influential royal families in Europe. Once an imperial palace, home to kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, the Hofburg is now the official residence of Austria's president.

The palace was expanded over the centuries with the addition of royal residences, a chapel, the Hofreitschule (Spanish Riding School), the Court Library, and the imperial court theater (which is the National Theater of Austria in Vienna today).

The Vienna Hofburg is massive at 240,000 square meters divided into 18 wings - and much of it is open to the public. The sprawling complex also houses 19 courtyards and over 2,500 rooms, many of which are still occupied by the people who work and live here.

The palace and fortress complex Alhambra - which literally translates to "the red one" - was originally built in 889 CE, though it didn't achieve its current look and massive 142,000-square-meter size until the mid-13th century.

The fortress was neglected and vandalized over the centuries, and though it was also partially restored, it wasn't always done with great care. Still, the Alhambra stands as one of the most magnificent displays of Muslim art and architecture in Spain.

Built using a mix of red clay, layered brick, and stone, the natural earth red color of the Alhambra is its most stunning feature. Inside, intricate stucco work covers the many Moorish palaces, royal baths, and fortified towers.

The adjoining Palacio de Generalife, with its terraced Persian gardens is also worth a visit - not only for its magnificent views of the Alhambra but also because the summer palace, with its many colonnades and pavilions, is a beauty in itself.

Top Attractions & Things to Do in Granada

The Jerónimos Monastery is one of Portugal's most recognizable constructions. Built in Lisbon near the Tagus river, the UNESCO World Heritage Site monastery is a beautiful example of Manueline or Portuguese late Gothic style.

Manueline architecture is notable for its ornate details, with lots of semicircular arches in doors and windows, and for incorporating maritime elements, such as shells and pearls, into the design.

Construction on the monastery began in 1501 and took just over 100 years. The original structure is built of gold-colored limestone, but different kings and architects over the years added their touch via imposing murals, gold-tiled ceilings, and lots of detailed woodwork.

The main entrances to the monastery are through the gates of the Church of Santa Maria, including a 32-meter, two-story-high side entrance and the smaller southern doorway, which opens directly to the main altar. The monastery itself has large grounds and gardens, where fountains, 16th-century buildings, and pavilions offer plenty to explore and discover.

Construction of the tower of Pisa – which is part of the cathedral complex that includes three other buildings – started in 1172, thanks to the generosity of widowed nobleman Donna Berta di Bernardo. Unfortunately, the architect overseeing the construction failed to properly survey the ground before starting, and the tower started to sink by the time the second floor had been built.

Battles with neighboring Florence then halted construction for over a century. By the time the work resumed, the soil had settled enough that the tower didn't fall – it did end up being 55.86 meters tall on the lower side and 56.67 meters on the higher side. It took almost two hundred years for the construction to be finally finished.

Today, tourists can again climb one of two staircases (the north-facing one has two extra steps because of the incline) to the tower bell chamber to see its seven bells, one for each note of the musical scale.

Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Vatican City

There's no better reason to visit Vatican City than walking through the stunning beauty of the Sistine Chapel. Built starting in 1473 and decorated with frescoes by Botticelli, Domenico, Michelangelo, and other Renaissance painters, the chapel is still used today for the papal conclave, during which a new people is chosen.

Michelangelo himself is responsible for the jaw-dropping paintings that adorn the 40-meter-long and 13-meter-wide ceiling – this is over 460 square meters of images inspired by both the Old and New Testament.

The chapel can only be accessed through the Vatican Museums, a vast complex of galleries that stretches for over 14 kilometers and houses one of the world's largest collections of ancient art –too big to be fully explored in one day, so good planning is needed if your ultimate goal is to make it through to the Sistine Chapel, too.

The church of the Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882 and today is one of Barcelona's most famous sights . Part of the reason for the delay was that once the first architect resigned, the second one who came on board, Antoni Gaudi, completely changed the original plans to build a stunning Art Nouveau and Gothic architectural marvel. His original design included eighteen spires and three grand façades (the south-facing one has yet to be completed).

Gaudi worked on the church from 1883 until his death in 1926 – but by then only a quarter of the project had been finished. He is buried in a crypt inside the church. The hope was that the Sagrada Familia would be finished in 2026 to commemorate 100 years of Gaudi's death, but this has been delayed again.

The castle that inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty's castle was built high up in the Bavarian Alps by order of 19th-century King Louis II – better known historically as "Mad King Ludwig." If the castle looks like something out of a fairy tale it's because that was Louis II's vision all along. He wanted a castle that looked somewhat medieval, somewhat out of legends, and very much over-the-top romanticized.

Despite its medieval design aspirations, the king also wanted comfort, and had the castle outfitted with running water, flush toilets, an elevator and a telephone line – even though phones were so rare at the time, he was probably unable to call anybody. Louis II only used the castle for about six months before dying, and the place was almost immediately converted into a museum.

The ancient city of Pompeii is one of Italy's most visited attractions and perhaps one of the most fascinating. The tragedy of Mount Vesuvius erupting in 79 CE caused the death of about 10 percent of Pompeii's population and resulted in an incredibly well-preserved town, as the city was buried under tons of volcanic ash.

Today, visitors to Pompeii can again walk its streets and venture into the town's most popular buildings: the Lupanare (brothel), the Villa of the Mysteries (home to a massive fresco that covers three walls), and thermopolium (the Roman version of a fast food joint).

Pompeii ruins cover a massive 440,000 square meters, and it would take visitors three to four days to truly explore them completely.

If you road trip (or travel by horse ) around the Ring Road that circles Iceland’s perimeter, you can also branch off to lesser travelled lava rock fields, fjords, and potential Northern Lights viewing spots. For an extra dose of Icelandic magic scenery, keep an eye out for elf walks .

Always make time to enjoy fika , a daily social hour with friends over coffee and pastries like kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon buns).

Known for its breweries , meat-heavy meals, exclusive nightclubs and festivals , and eclectic art scene, Germany is often seen as a hipster’s paradise or the perfect backdrop to a rowdy night out. While it is both of those things—especially Cologne with its university life and Berlin with its extensive street food, street art, and prevalence of eerie abandoned spaces—it’s also a country with impressive architecture, meandering scenic drives , an appreciation for literature , kid-friendly attractions, some of the best Christmas markets in Europe, and a strong commitment to remembering its darker history .

The Netherlands

Most people associate the Netherlands with three Ws: windmills, waterways, and weed. While it’s difficult to go anywhere without encountering at least one of those—and you should wander canals and frolic in tulip-covered fields—it’s home to more than just natural and “herbal” beauty. The first country to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption, the Netherlands is a welcoming place for LGBTQIA+ visitors and hosts queer-celebratory festivals, performances, and events throughout the year. It’s also edam gouda destination for cheese aficionados, with dedicated cheese museums in Amsterdam and traditional medieval cheese markets easily accessible from the capital city.

If dramatic scenery and its culturally-ingrained love of alcohol attract you to the U.K., Ireland has both—plus even greener landscapes and even kinder locals. You’ll pay steeply in Dublin, especially for attractions like the Guinness Storehouse , but its unique architecture , literary heritage, and theater scene are worth the coin. The best way to see the country, though, is to drive along the western coastline via the Wild Atlantic Way . Accommodation ranges from homestays to full-on castles , and you can traipse woodland waterfalls , befriend Connemara horses, hike the Cliffs of Moher , and hear live music in Galway along the way.

Take everything great about Spain while subtracting the heftier crowds and costs, and you'll get Portugal . In addition to wine and sangria, you can sip on local drinks like port, ginjinha (sour cherry liquor), and vinho verde (green wine) for a few euros a glass, plus intercity train travel and rideshare apps are often cheaper than the bus. Approachability is a big plus, but the highlights are river tours around Porto and the Douro Valley , sampling pastel de nata (egg custard tarts) and pão de deus (coconut bread) in Lisbon , exploring fairytale castles of Sintra , and hopping beaches and coves along the Algarve .

As with France, people often associate Switzerland with elaborate indulgences, like fancy ski resorts , the wealthy city of Geneva , and internationally acclaimed dining . While no trip to Switzerland would be complete without a surplus of fondue and chocolate, some of the best experiences in the country are found outside its cities. Hiking and skiing around its lakes , mountains, and parks will give you the chance to get up close and personal with its natural charm, but you don’t even have to be an active traveler to partake: there are also many ways to catch the views by train .

This central European country shares more than just a border with Italy: it also shares a passion for local wines, truffle-laden pastas, mountaintop skiing, and lakeside castles and hiking—and all at a fraction of the price. Capital city, vegetarian-friendly Ljubljana, is completely walkable, with lots of meandering canals and small farmers’ and flea markets even on the coldest of days. If you head to Slovenia’s most popular lake—Lake Bled—during the off season, you can avoid touristy beach parties and instead enjoy a virtually uninterrupted view of crisp, turquoise water shimmering beneath the mountains.

Faroe Islands

It’s hard to find unspoiled nature, but the Faroe Islands get pretty close. Located between Iceland and Norway, this remote sovereign nation offers the same rugged, otherworldly landscapes as its neighbors, but with significantly less foot, car, and boat traffic. If you’re more of an indoor cat, you may want to give this trip a skip, but otherwise suit up with layers and waterproof gear and get ready to fall in love with puffins. Stay with a local if you can—it’s more traditional, more affordable, and you’ll learn more about respecting the ecosystems around you.

Much like Greece, Croatia can impress steadfast city-breakers as much as die-hard nature-chasers. From summer festivals in Split and Dubrovnik to dedicated booze-cruise boats that take you to islands like Hvar and Brač, it has plenty of opportunities to indulge hedonistic tendencies. Equally prominent, though, are chances to rejuvenate on more remote islands , plan a leisurely food crawl , or hike through forest, mountains, and waterfalls at national parks like Krka or Plitvice Lakes .

Czech Republic

If Germany’s castles, scenic road trips, and literary appreciation are as appealing as its vast quantities of alcohol, the Czech Republic offers all of the above but with smaller crowds and, especially outside its capital, significantly lower costs. With its Franz Kafka museum, striking Jewish quarter, and black light theater performances as well as its thriving restaurant , nightlife , and absinthe scenes, Prague is definitely worth a visit, but make sure to take advantage of the extensive domestic train system to take day trips or spend time elsewhere to see some of its best architecture, World War II history, and wine and beer producers.

If you can’t decide whether to go to France, Germany, or the Netherlands, Belgium has elements of all three. It has the excellent chocolate of France, the impressive range of architecture like Germany, and the walkable, canal-filled cities like the Netherlands. Plus, the Belgians are the inventor of frites . The bilingual capital of Brussels is an ideal gateway to other cities and neighboring countries, and with its diplomatic ties, it also offers a great cultural melting pot. Eat at least one meal in Matongé, its African quarter, before traveling out to other cities like Antwerp or Bruges .

This European travel destination is the ultimate bucket-list topper for couples seeking a romantic getaway. While you’re undoubtedly aware of the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and the Louvre Museum, there are plenty more exciting things to do in Paris .

Sacred buildings like the Sacre Coeur and the Sainte-Chapelle are some of the most striking examples of this city’s beauty. While spaces like the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Jardin Tuileries near the Louvre are great spots to enjoy the city’s natural splendour.

As a Londoner (born and bred), I might be a little biased, but the city I call home should be at the very top of your European bucket list.

England’s capital boasts some obvious attractions like Big Ben, London Eye , and Buckingham Palace . But you’ll truly fall in love with London once you explore beyond the tourist offerings.

Make your way to Little Venice, between Paddington and Camden Town, for afternoon tea on a canal boat. Or visit the Sky Garden for free and enjoy impeccable views of the city among beautiful greenery.

London is also a foodie’s paradise. Head to the historic Borough Market for fresh produce and mouth-watering street food. Or explore smaller food markets like Maltby Street Market and Boxpark Shoreditch.

But, one of my favourite things to do in the city is vintage shopping on Brick Lane. Be sure to stop at the iconic Beigel Bake on Brick Lane while hunting thrifty finds. There are also tons of excellent curry houses on this street.

Golden Circle

Visiting Iceland’s Golden Circle is a bucket-list-worthy activity you won’t forget.

What is the Golden Circle, you may ask? Well, it’s got nothing to do with gold. But, it is a loop road that runs past some of the top attractions in Iceland . These include the Gullfoss Waterfall , Þingvellir National Park, and the Geyser Geothermal Area.

The convenient route attracts adventurers who take on the 190-mile loop on a road trip, often camping along the way . The road leads past many of Iceland’s thunderous waterfalls , verdant landscapes, and explosive geysers, making it one of the most scenic roads you’ll ever take.

Rovaniemi

If you’re looking for one of the best places in Europe to visit with kids, head to Rovaniemi . The “hometown of Santa Claus” is a dreamy destination in Finland where you can fully immerse yourself in the Christmas fantasy.

Enjoy the snow with a scenic ride on a husky sled or deer-drawn sleigh (unfortunately, these don’t fly). Or get the adrenaline pumping on a Rovaniemi snowmobile safari or some skis.

You’ll also love visiting Santa Claus Village , where it’s Christmas every day of the year. The underground Santa Park should be your first stop for an entertaining lesson in becoming an elf and enjoying a few amusement rides.

Kick off your visit with a stroll through the Dubrovnik Old Town — a Unesco World Heritage Site packed with restaurants, intriguing shops, and a vibrant market. You’ll also find the Dubrovnik Cathedral here, which is pretty impressive inside and out.

The glistening waters are also open to exploration, so you can hit the waves on a kayak tour or soak up the sun rays on one of the stunning Dubrovnik beaches . Alternatively, you can keep active with a walk along the city walls or a hike up Mount Srd for breathtaking sunset views.

There’s so much more to Dubrovnik that you’ll have to explore for yourself. I’m talking about excellent restaurants and hidden gems in Dubrovnik , like Buza bar , which sits perched on a cliff.

Brilliant Places to Visit in Europe

Let’s kick off with a hugely underrated spot in Europe. The autonomous province of Trentino is one of the best destinations for visiting Italy in winter .

With towering mountain ranges dusted in snow and over 290 lakes, this region offers some of the best skiing in Europe . And, as we’ve all come to expect from Italian cuisine, Trentino boasts hearty food that’ll defrost your insides and warm your heart after an icy ski sesh.

Of course, you don’t have to visit Trentino in winter , but its northern Italian landscape is practically made for a snowy cloak. So pack your comfiest clothes and prepare for magical horse rides through the powder – and perhaps even a cooking class or two.

Venice : a city on water in northeast Italy is one of the more unique places to visit in Europe. With shimmering canals winding through tiny alleys, charming architecture, and deep historical roots, Venice is a dream to explore.

When you’re not taking a calming Venice gondola ride on the Grand Canal, you can head to St. Mark’s Square to view St Mark’s Basilica. The square is also home to the Venetian Gothic Doge’s Palace , connected to the infamous Bridge of Sighs .

Beyond the city’s main square, you can explore Venice’s must-see bridges , like the Rialto Bridge.

Once you’ve exhausted all the incredible activities in Venice , you can take a day trip to Burano to admire the colourful houses and exquisite lace this village produces. Or take a short trip to Murano to learn about the unique glass-making techniques that have been carried forth for over 1000 years.

Another excellent winter destination in Europe , Hallstatt is a postcard-perfect lakeside village in Austria. This little spot was once a salt-mine village but, today, it’s a stunning destination for those looking for a crowd-free vacation.

Visit in winter for skiing and picturesque horse-drawn carriage rides. Or, head there during the warmer months to see the surrounding mountains lush with greenery and swans swimming in Lake Hallstatt.

Bring a camera along, and take a guided photography tour to find the best photo spots.

Seville , the capital city of Andalusia has all the beauty, history, and good food to make you want to return again and again. The architecture showcases a spectacular mixture of Christian and Moorish influence, as seen in top tourist attractions like the Real Alcázar of Seville .

Other architectural highlights include the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, the Seville Cathedral with its tall bell tower, La Giralda, standing 97.5 metres high. Visiting the modern “mushrooms” — formally known as the Metropol Parasol — is another great activity in Seville .

Of course, when in southern Spain, you simply must attend an authentic Flamenco show . Head to Calle Betis in the Triana neighbourhood to find plenty of river-facing bars where you’re sure to come across a live Flamenco performance or two.

Douro Valley

You know me – I love a wine excursion. No wonder then that I’m recommending one of the world’s most beautiful valleys . The Douro Valley boasts cascading vineyards overlooking the winding Douro River.

The river valley stretches from central Spain to the northern part of Portugal. Its mouth is in the city of Porto (one of the best cheap places to visit in Europe).

Naturally, the Douro Valley is a wine-lover’s paradise. It’s also home to many excellent Douro Valley hotels , making it the perfect place for a laid-back getaway. When you’re not on a wine-tasting tour or snapping landscape shots, take a boat trip on the river or see the river on a scenic train ride through the countryside.

Simply put, Naxos, Greece , is one of the best places to travel in Europe if you want to avoid the hectic tourist crowds that flock to Santorini and Mykonos .

The largest of the Cycladic islands, Naxos boasts splendid beaches , intriguing architectural finds, and tons of exciting activities. Pack your comfiest hiking shoes (I adore these Tropicfeel ones), because the best way to explore Naxos’ rugged beauty is on foot.

Although people have attempted to recreate many of this city’s architectural masterpieces elsewhere, there is no place like Rome . With Roman landmarks like the Colosseum , the Pantheon, and the (very random) pyramid of Cestius beautifying this city, there’s something exciting to see around every corner.

The iconic Trevi Fountain may be beautiful from the outside, but there’s more than meets the eye. Underneath this fountain, you’ll find the Vicus Caprarius — an ancient underground complex home to the aqueduct that feeds the fountain and many other curiosities.

For more underground discovery, you can explore Rome’s many catacombs and learn about their extensive history.

Other intriguing stops to add to your Rome itinerary include, The Mouth of Truth, the ancient Appian Way, and the Aventine Keyhole. Trust me, all these sights are just the tip of the Roman iceberg.

This southern Italian region that forms part of Italy’s “boot” is nothing short of stunning, and you’re bound to fall in love.

I’m not being dramatic, I promise – with whitewashed villages perched on hilltops, quaint seaside towns, and unique heritage and architecture, this region is simply dreamy.

There are plenty of things to do in Puglia . There’s the White City, Ostuni , with its signature whitewashed houses, and charming little Monopoli , with its crystal clear beaches.

Then there’s beautiful Lecce , with its baroque churches and ancient Roman sites dating back over 2,000 years.

And, for those seeking a laid-back coastal getaway, head to stunning Gallipoli or Polignano a Mare — where you’ll find a restaurant tucked into a cave!

Whether you’re visiting Copenhagen in winter or summer, the capital city of Denmark has plenty to keep you busy. No really, expect stunning Copenhagen castles , canal rides, and picture-perfect, colourful facades. Oh, and let’s not overlook Copenhagen’s street food markets .

Other cool things to do in Copenhagen include visiting places like the Amalienborg Palace and the opulent Christiansborg Palace. You won’t want to miss the Tivoli Gardens either, although the crowds can be overwhelming.

If you’re the artsy type, you’ll probably adore the thoughtfully curated exhibitions in the NY Carlsberg Glyptotek as much as I did.

If you want to see the Northern Lights, Tromsø might be one of your best bets. In fact, I was lucky enough to see them four times in a row on my visit – it may have been a fluke but still, Tromsø is an epic destination. Not to mention, it’s also a great place to go whale watching .

Besides viewing this bucket-list phenomenon, though, there are plenty of other things to do in Tromso . And, if you visit in winter, you’ll experience the Polar night, a phenomenon where the night lasts longer than 24 hours.

Unmissable attractions include the stunningly unique Arctic Cathedral, visible from various points in the city, and the Fjellheisen Cable Car. This cable car offers stunning city views and snow-capped mountains in the background.

Although often overlooked in favour of the tranquil Greek Islands , Athens is any history buff’s dream destination. With structures and ruins dating back to the 5th century BC still dominating the landscape, the city is an open-air museum of historic landmarks.

There’s the Acropolis , the Parthenon, and the Ancient Agora of Athens — to name just a few impressive sights. Make your way through the “Museum Mile” on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue for the ultimate crash course in Hellenic history.

Or enjoy the Athenian weather at one of the open-air cinemas scattered across the city.

If you’re looking for cool places in Europe, look no further than Bruges. Known as the “Venice of the North,” Bruges is a fairytale-esque city in Belgium with winding canals and Mediaeval architecture.

This city was once the economic centre of Flanders, and its prosperous history is visible in the opulent architecture on Burg Square. You’ll also love the unique facades of the buildings in Markt — the Market Square — and the countless museums in the city.

Of course, some of the top things to do in Bruges include sampling Belgian treats at the best food spots in Bruges . The city offers some excellent bars and breweries too.

Home to some of Italy’s most important museums and art pieces, Florence is an art lover’s Mecca.

Head to the Uffizi Gallery to see works from the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Boticelli, and Raphael. There’s also the Accademia Gallery , home to Michelangelo’s famous David sculpture.

If you’re short on time or money, you can see a replica of Michelangelo’s David on Piazza della Signoria, opposite Palazzo Vecchio. If you look close enough, you’ll also spot a small graffiti carving on the front of Palazzo Vecchio, believed to be done by Michelangelo.

Other marvellous sites include Brunelleschi’s dome on the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Ponte Vecchio, the only Florentine bridge not bombed during WW2.

You may know Barcelona for the ornate and quirky architectural works of Antoni Gaudí — like the Gothic Sagrada Familia . Now pair that with 30 Michelin-star restaurants and plenty of spacious beaches, and you have an obvious list-topper for any Spain itinerary .

Highlights of the city include the stunning Park Güell , Casa Batlló , and the Mercado de La Boqueria — a bustling market offering all sorts of fresh produce. You can get a bird’s eye view of it on the Montjuïc Cable Car .

Not into heights? Visit the Picasso Museum instead to admire over 4,000 pieces of his art.

Lofoten Islands

Norway’s Lofoten Islands are nothing short of stunning. With grey mountains rising from the ocean under a blanket of snow, this destination makes for the perfect photographer’s playground.

You may think this icy region in the Arctic Circle isn’t worth the trek, but there’s a surprising amount of things to do here — besides gaping in awe. The fishing villages also deliver some of the best fish you’ll ever taste… So you can trust that the Lofoten Islands’ cuisine won’t disappoint.

Amsterdam is another no-brainer when it comes to the best places to go in Europe. With its elaborate canal system and beautiful facades, the Netherlands’ pretty capital city deserves all the buzz it gets.

One of the absolute must-sees in this city is the Van Gogh Museum , which contains the largest collection of artworks by the iconic artist. You also don’t want to miss a visit to Anne Frank’s House and the Rijksmuseum .

It’s not exactly a hidden gem, I know, but the capital city of Germany is home to many contemporary and historical landmarks that make it a European bucket-list destination . The sandstone Brandenburg Gate has served as the symbol of unity and division, but today serves as the former.

Another sight worth visiting is the remaining one mile of the Berlin Wall, which fell in 1989. If you’re an art fanatic, you’ll love the open-air East Side Gallery, a collection of street art adorning the remaining wall.

Among the historically significant attractions, you’ll also find modern structures like the Reichstag Building and the Berliner Fernsehturm — which provides spectacular 360° views after a 40-second launch to the top.

It’s no secret that Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, which is why it’s understandably packed with tourists during summer. I visited Prague in winter and found it dreamy under a layer of snow.

Besides its Baroque palaces, Gothic cathedrals, and impressive Prague Castle , this city also offers plenty to do. A somewhat quirky activity to try in this city is to visit a Prague beer spa — sounds strange, I know! You also won’t want to miss the mesmerising (and somewhat controversial) art of David Cerny throughout Prague.

Known as the “City of Music”, Vienna has been home to countless musical icons, including Mozart, Franz Schubert, and Beethoven. So, if you’re a music fanatic, Vienna is one of the top places to visit in Europe.

This city is also one of the most picturesque in the world, with sights like the Schönbrunn Palace , the Vienna Opera House, and the Hofburg with its intricately-detailed white facade.

For an excellent view of the city, head up the Jubiläumswarte, an old weather station that serves as an excellent free lookout point over western Vienna.

Budapest

In need of a cosy, romantic getaway? I’ve got you – Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, looks like something straight out of a fairytale.

On top of that, it’s the thermal bath capital of the world. So if you were wondering where to go in Europe to relax, Budapest is the place.

Be sure to visit the 13th-century Buda Castle and vast palace complex to wonder at the architectural beauty and learn about the city’s history. Of course, a dip in the Széchenyi Baths is a must-do. Or you can head to the Art Nouveau-style Gellért Thermal Baths , built in 1918.

Budapest is also home to some interesting underground locations, including the Cave Church, the Hospital in the Rock, and a Labyrinth running under the Buda Castle.

Okay, zillions might be an exaggeration but it’s safe to say that a fleeting visit just isn’t enough. One of the best things about travelling in

The center of cultural life in ancient Athens is still an incredible sight to behold today, and visiting is part of any Athens itinerary !

Visit Stonehenge in England.

Mysterious, beautiful Stonehenge is the most intricately built prehistoric stone circle on Earth–and its mysteries have been captivating visitors for thousands of years.

As far as experiences in England go, it may be touristy–but that doesn’t mean you should skip it.

Marvel at the Colosseum in Rome.

I’ll never forget the first time that I saw the Colosseum in person: the sheer size of it is incredible, and stepping inside is even more magnificent.

If you book a tour, you can even tour the Colosseum’s underground area beneath the arena.

Yep, it’s incredibly cheesy… but if you make it out to this town about 30 minutes west of Florence, don’t pass up the chance to have fun being silly!

Visit the ruins of Pompeii.

… and don’t forget to visit the city of Herculaneum, too, which was buried in the same eruption of Mount Vesuvius that Pompeii was.

Stand in awe of Skogafoss waterfall in Iceland.

There is no shortage of truly epic landscapes to add to your Iceland bucket list , but perhaps none is as popular or iconic as the incredible Skogafoss.

You can find Skogafoss just off of Iceland’s iconic Ring Road –no hike required.

Be sure to bring a raincoat with you, as that mist is even more powerful than it looks!

Admire views of Florence from above.

Whether you climb Brunelleschi’s dome at the Duomo or admire the stunning cathedral from afar at the Palazzo Vecchio, Piazzale Michelangelo, or one of the other best viewpoints in Florence , admiring the Cradle of the Renaissance from above is one of the best things to do in Europe.

Stroll across the Charles Bridge in Prague.

Built starting in 1357, the ornate Charles Bridge is the oldest bridge in Prague, and for centuries was the only bridge in the city to cross the Vltava River.

The bridge links, among many other things, Prague’s central Old Town with its massive castle complex, both among the best things to see in the city.

Hike the Path of the Gods along the Amalfi Coast.

Between the villages of Bomerano and Nocelle along the Amalfi Coast runs one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Europe.

The main portion is only about 4 miles, but you’ll be in for quite the workout if you decide to finish by descending from Nocelle to Positano by foot. The views, however, are worth the effort.

Meander through Amsterdam’s historic center.

Riding a bike in Amsterdam can be a bit intimidating, true–but whether you choose to walk or ride, getting lost among the city’s canals is definitely one of the best things to do in Europe!

We highly recommend stopping into a cheese shop or six along the way.

Experience the thermal baths in Budapest.

There are dozens of incredible things to do in Budapest , but few are as unique to the city as the enormous number of thermal baths located right in the city center!

The Szechenyi Thermal Baths in City Park and Gellert Thermal Baths in Hotel Gellert are among the most popular with visitors, and both are worth a visit.

Enjoy a gondola ride in Venice.

Touristy? Absolutely. Expensive? Without a doubt.

There’s no doubt, though, that’s there something magical–not to mention downright iconic, about a gondola ride in Venice !

Walk along the Cliffs of Moher.

These beautiful cliffs on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way are unforgettable.

While you can hike all the way from Doolin to the cliffs, most travelers start at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor’s Center.

From there, consider walking to Hag’s Head (which should take a bit over an hour each way) to ditch the crowds and enjoy more peaceful views of the Cliffs of Moher .

Order coffee or a meal in the local language.

Sure, you’ll probably mispronounce something the first time, and in popular European tourist destinations you won’t necessarily “need” to speak anything other than English to get by… but there is something incredibly gratifying about learning to speak even a tiny bit of the local language on your trip, and restaurants and cafes are the perfect places to start!

Go dog sledding in Lapland.

For a winter paradise in Europe, you can’t beat dog sledding in Lapland.

Jump into the Blue Lagoon in Malta.

The tiny country of Malta has no shortage of rocky swimming locations, but none are quite as spectacular as the Blue Lagoon of Comino, one of the most popular day trips from the main island and one of the best things to do in Malta .

Walk the walls of Dubrovnik.

It’s hard to decide which view from the defensive city walls surrounding Dubrovnik’s Old Town is more incredible: the view looking into the city or the view looking out at the sparkling Adriatic Sea.

The cities have some lovely options, but for us, nothing beats a night spent with an Irish beer, some pub food, and live music in a tiny village that is tucked away in a quiet corner of the Emerald Isle.

Intricately organized rows of brightly colored tulips that seem neverending, maybe even interrupted by a picturesque windmill in the background: views like these are worth traveling to the Netherlands for!

Vienna is the classic travel destination for checking an opera off your bucket list for Europe, but most major European cities boast a stunning opera house that’s worth seeing a show in–even if you’re not the biggest fan of opera.

Visit the fairytale village of Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland.

Overlooked by the towering Staubbach Waterfall, Lauterbrunnen looks like one of those towns that are simply too magical to be real (though, to be entirely fair, quite a bit of Switzerland looks like that!).

Whether it’s one of the most famous churches in London , Paris, or Rome, or a quiet community church in a small town, the art, architecture, and history you can experience throughout the churches of Europe is not to be missed.

Take a European road trip.

Deciding which of the best road trips in Europe is right for you is a near-impossible challenge… but no matter which destination (or destinations!) you choose, it’s sure to be unforgettable.

Some of our favorite bucket list European road trips so far have been in Tuscany , Provence , Sicily , Ireland , Southern Spain , and Croatia –but there are many more to come in the future.

Whether it’s in Iceland , Sweden, Norway, Finland, or even Scotland, the northern lights are a magnificent spectacle that belongs on your European bucket list.

Enjoy the beaches of Sardinia.

This isolated island off the coast of Italy is one of the most distinct regions in the country–and, despite the fact that it is rarely visited by tourists from outside of Europe, it’s home to some of the most stunning beaches on the continent!

Take public transportation.

Not only is it often the easiest way to get around, but it’s also a fantastic way to learn about the place you’re visiting!

… and an overnight train.

Sure, it may not be the most comfortable sleep you’ve ever had, but there’s something exhilarating about overnight travel via train.

If you’ve never tried it, consider crossing it off your European bucket list on your next trip (plus, it’s better for the environment than flying, anyway).

Take a canal cruise in Bruges.

The city of Bruges, Belgium looks exactly like what a non-European tourist expects Europe to look like before arriving–in other words, like an ancient city worthy of being the setting of a fairytale.

With a description like that, it’s no surprise that Bruges is one of the most romantic cities in Europe .

And, there’s no better place to appreciate the city’s beauty than from the water!

Explore the villas of Lake Como.

From Bellagio to Lecco and beyond, the towns and cities dotting the edges of Lake Como are known for their stunning views and opulent villas.

Road trip the Scottish Highlands.

Whether you’re inspired by Outlander, Harry Potter, the temptation of a good glass of scotch whisky, or simply the sweeping landscapes of northern Scotland, road tripping the NC 500 will take you to some of the most beautiful–and in the case of the sparkling turquoise beaches, unexpected–corners of Europe.

Experience a sauna in Finland.

The Finnish take their cultural tradition of sauna extremely seriously, and taking part in the sauna experience is one of the many fun things to do in Europe (just make sure to check your modesty at the door).

Take a sunrise stroll through your favorite city.

Whether it’s Paris or Rome, Budapest or Istanbul, there’s some magical about a European city at dawn–consider walking to some of the city’s best tourist attractions to see them both bathed in beautiful early morning light and without crowds!

Explore the castles of Transylvania.

The gorgeous Romanian region of Transylvania lends itself to legend–helped, along, of course, by its association with Dracula.

While the Dracula story is based on Vlad the Impaler, the majority of the legend is of course firmly in the realm of fiction.

However, that doesn’t take away from the magic of visiting Bran Castle, as well as other stunning Transylvanian castles like Peles Castle and Corvin Castle.

Take a tour of one of the world’s best museums.

Even if art history isn’t exactly your subject of choice, taking an organized tour of one of Europe’s great museums absolutely belongs on your Europe bucket list!

Visiting museums like the Uffizi, the Louvre, the Vatican Museums, and the Prado independently can be lots of fun, but there’s something incredibly special about having the history and context of various works brought to life with a live guide.

You don’t necessarily need to book a tour for every museum you visit–but once in a while, it’s definitely worth the splurge.

Take a day trip to Asia.

Absolutely delicious, with a delightfully chewy crust and a focus on very fresh, but minimal, ingredients, tucking into a true Napoli-style pizza in Naples is an experience that can’t quite be recreated anywhere else.

Get off the beaten path with a visit to the Faroe Islands.

Stunningly beautiful, the isolated Faroe Islands are one of the least-visited corners of Europe… but their dramatic landscapes make it well worth the effort.

Tour a church decorated with bones.

From the mummies of Sicily to the Capuchin Crypt of Rome, and from the Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic to the Capela dos Ossos in Portugal, there is a startling amount of artwork in Europe constructed with human remains–most of it in or underneath churches or monasteries.

Though quite unsettling on the face of it, these places are also incredibly interesting.

Eat tapas (and churros) in Madrid.

Madrid is well-known for its late-night culture, where bars and clubs often stay open until dawn.

They’re amazing year-round, of course, but churros con chocolate are a particular highlight of visiting Madrid in winter !

Of all the storybook-worthy towns in Europe, it’s arguable that the villages of Alsace, France are among the most picturesque.

Tucked in a corner of northeastern France and home to a distinct culture that blends French and German influences, Alsace is known for its wine, its food, and its Christmas markets.

Spend the night in a castle.

From Ireland to France and beyond, there are plenty of opportunities to sleep in beautiful, historic locations–but none are quite as worthy of a Europe bucket list as the idea of sleeping in a castle!

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sun’s magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, Solar Eyeglasses suggests wearing green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

No Power Outages: When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice a sudden loss of energy.

The day has almost arrived: On Monday (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface.

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

If you want to see totality but don’t live within the path, driving or taking public transit to a city within the path may be possible. The map above shows how far the drive is to the path of totality, based on where you’re coming from. Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.
