Falkland Islands

You are here > Home > Plan Your Trip > Getting Around > Local Tours

By far the best way to discover the Islands is with a local guide. Falkland Islanders are keen to share stories, describing life from their perspective whilst showing visitors the very best that their home has to offer.

Whether from the Islands’ capital, Stanley , or an accommodation establishment elsewhere, you will find plenty of suggestions to tempt you to travel around with a private guide, as part of small group or as a self-guided activity. Enjoy the excitement of an overland trip in a rugged but comfortable 4x4 vehicle or set your own pace on foot. Opportunities to view wildlife are plentiful and can be tailored to suit your interests. Trips can also be arranged to battlefield sites and memorials, farms, settlements and points of interest.

Cruise visitors to Stanley are able to choose from a variety of shore excursions including town and nature walks, bus tours, farm visits, trips to wildlife destinations and battlefields. Discover the social and natural history of the Islands, learn about life on a Falklands farm or travel to the memorials of the 1982 conflict. Visits to the smaller islands of the archipelago will include spectacular wildlife colonies and often the experience of a Falklands “smoko” with delicious cakes and cookies that just have to be tasted.

If you are here for a longer stay, you will find many opportunities to build a personalised itinerary to explore your surroundings. Accommodation hosts around the Islands offer a range of daytrips and short tours.

Familiarise yourself with what our local operator and guides are doing to keep their trips sustainable which will help preserve the Falklands' pristine environment for future generations.  The Green Seal Scheme is a Sustainability Certification Scheme aimed at supporting tourism businesses in the Falklands to adopt sustainable and responsible business practices.

Testimonials

What people say about us.

It was a long drive to Berthas beach, but it was well worth it. We could have spent the whole day just watching them move about. There are 100's of them and they just move around, in groups, by themselves, and when they head to the water. Some just hung out at the waters edge and some went into the water. If you like watching Penguins, you'll love Berthas beach. I would go back there.

- Artur Berry

We went to a private reserve area which took about 2 hours from the port. It was over an hour 4 x4 driving on an unpaved or unimproved road but nice ride in a landrover 4 runner. There were only about 4 of us visiting the elephant seals and then the penguins so no crowds and we could get close while still giving the animals appropriate space. Nice guides/drivers. We did this as a cruise stop and it was much cheaper than anything there ship offered. I recommend this tour to see both Seals and penguins we highly recommend booking with premium penguin tours

- Terry Man

A real adventure in 4x4 vehicles winding through the rugged Falklands landscape. Discovering the picturesque and secluded Kelp Point, home to a growing elephant Seal colony and a established Gentoo rookery.

We had booked Premium Penguin tours for the day and this was our first stop We had a fantastic time here. The Elephant seals are huge and they took us to see them in a number of different locations around the beach. The scenery was stunning. The off road driving to get us to some of these places was tremendous

We chose to do this tour whilst on a cruise stop in Stanley. We are so happy we made this choice. A small group overall, and then even more personal with only 4 people per 4x4 vehicle. An off-road trip that was so much fun, and allowed us to see some of the more remote scenery. Elephant seals and penguins were mentioned in the tour description and was it true - yes, yes, yes. Unbelievable to get so close to the elephant seals at one beach, and then get close to a gentoo penguin colony at another beach (we were given a briefing on safe distances to view the seals and the penguins) Both stops were long enough to just sit and take it all in, which was fantastic. Our guide/driver was super informative and had a great sense of humour which also really added to the tour. This is an exclusive tour run by Premium Penguin Tour's, and we recommend it to anyone wanting an adventure and a look at wildlife in a totally unspoilt and respectful way.

- Christie Wiggins

We stopped in Stanley on a cruise and chose an excursion to Kelp Point, as it sounded like it would be an adventure. It was. We left Stanley and drove through East Falkland for quite a while before taking a left up a hill and off road. We had a nice drive past streams and inlets and many MANY sheep! When we finally arrived at the beach area we saw many elephant seals sunning themselves and going in and out of the water. We even saw some young males sparring. It was incredibly beautiful and amazing to be so close to those amazing animals. After spending time with the seals, we got back in the 4x4 and our guide drove us to a white sandy beach with a large gentoo penguin colony. The penguins were walking back & forth to the beach, getting food for their babies. It was amazing. Hopefully as this spot gains popularity, the people respect the animals and the animals stay wild.

Beautiful beach that could quite possibly be in the Caribbean, sand is white and thecsea is a tropical view. Very lucky to go when the sea was calm and was, sky cloudless. Gentoo penguins were coming home, arriving in dribs and drabs from the sea, amazing to see in their own little habitat.

What a great day we had at Bertha’s Beach with Premium Penguin Tours. He is a lovely man and so knowledgeable about the Falkland Islands and it’s history, which helped to make the day so special. The penguins at Bertha’s Beach were just amazing and being able to walk amongst them was very special.

Welcome to the Falkland Islands, where penguins and sheep outnumber people by the hundred-thousands.

Standing on the gentle slopes or white sandy beaches of the Falkland Islands, it’s hard to believe that just a few decades ago this archipelago was the site of war. These days, the spotlight is on the islands' incredible wildlife. On a Falkland Islands cruise , you'll have front-row seats to Antarctic and South American seabirds soaring through the sky, penguins strutting their stuff along the beach, colonies of elephant seals soaking up the sun, and pods of dolphins and whales playing in the surf. The Falklands are a wildlife wonderland waiting for you to explore.

CALLING CODE

Electricity, learn more about falkland islands, local culture of falkland islands.

The Falkland Islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory, and while there has been some influence from Argentina, Spain and France throughout history, the culture of the Falklands is notably British. Daily life in the Falklands is very similar to life in remote Scottish, Welsh and English villages and you can see this influence in the architecture, cuisine and cultural customs. The vast majority of people in the Falklands live in the tiny capital of Stanley – everywhere outside of this is called "camp” – and there's a real sense of community wherever you go. Outside of Stanley you could walk for hours and not see another human soul – penguins are a different story, though! When visiting the Falklands, make sure you pick up a copy of the local newspaper, The Penguin News to see what's happening in the community.

Geography & environment

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago of almost 800 islands located southwest of Argentina in the South Pacific. The two main islands, West and East Falkland, are mostly mountainous and craggy terrain with some low-lying plains. There are hundreds of smaller islands that are privately owned or occupied by wildlife. Due to its remote location and proximity to the South Pole, the weather tends to be very windy and rainy, and covered in fine snow during the cooler months.

Shopping guide to Falkland Islands

The only place to shop in the Falklands is Stanley, and while it's limited compared to big cities, you can easily find the essentials (groceries, home supplies, etc) as well as a few shops selling luxury items. The supermarkets sell fresh fish, meat and produce from the islands, as well as branded goods that are imported from the UK. If you want to take a piece of the Falklands home with you, gift shops sell handmade items like felt clothing and woollies made from the local sheep, and leather items produced on the islands. Pebbles and semi-precious stones are made into jewelry, and the local art draws influence from the spectacular landscape.

Food & drink in Falkland Islands

As an island nation,  locally caught seafood is a big part of the Falklands' cuisine and features on many restaurant menus. Popular dishes include grilled calamari, Atlantic rock cod, scallops, mussels, and sea trout served with steamed vegetables and fritters. Classic British fish and chips is also a very popular dish, as are meals made with free-range lamb, beef and mutton raised on the islands. One of the favorite traditions for locals is the daily smoko (a local term for the mid-morning tea break), which typically includes a cup of tea or coffee served with cakes and biscuits.

Weather in the Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands have a cool maritime climate with windy and cloudy weather conditions throughout the year. The weather is never extreme due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, but there are four distinct seasons. Daytime temperatures in winter range between 1.5 - 4.5°C (35-40°F), while summer temperatures linger between 15-18°C (60-65°F). The islands are fairly dry with most rainfall occurring in winter, but strong, blustery winds are almost always a given so make sure you bring a windproof jacket.
