START PLANNING YOUR FAMILY SAFARI TO KENYA
Kenya is a very established and superb family holiday destination, offering a fantastic balance of incredible game viewing, varied and exciting activities , rewarding cultural experiences and warm personal hosting. Whatever the age of your children, we can design your Kenya family holiday to suit your individual requirements, though we would advise that a truly great time for a family safari holiday in Kenya is when your kids are over the age of around seven to eight years old.
If you wish to include some time on the beach, the Kenya coast offers everything from affordable resort hotels to private beach villas and exclusive beach retreats, or you can consider travelling further afield to the beaches of Zanzibar, Mauritius or Seychelles.
WHY CHOOSE KENYA AS YOUR FAMILY HOLIDAY DESTINATION
Beyond offering some of the best game viewing in Africa, Kenya is a very practical family holiday destination, for several key reasons:
- Kenya can generally offer very good value for money, especially ‘safari and beach’ combinations
- It is easy to move around Kenya which has a good tourist infrastructure, especially on short internal flights which cut out the need for long drives
- There are many family-friendly safari camps and lodges in Kenya , often with specific family accommodation options
- There are convenient beach options for combination holidays, both within Kenya and further afield
- Children of all ages will nearly always be able to undertake game drives (though other activities may be age restricted)
- Most safari vehicles in Kenya accommodate 4 to 6 guests so a key part of a Kenya family safari could be having your own exclusive vehicle for game drives, without paying extra
Kenya also offers incredibly warm hospitality and friendly service from managers, guides and camp staff. One of the genuine benefits of travelling with children is the exposure they have to different cultures and ways of life. African people are natural lovers of children, and in addition to your children forming bonds with and learning from your local guide, it is not uncommon to find camp staff entertaining your kids with local games, cooking or enquiring conversation. Kenyan safari hospitality is as family-friendly as it comes, whilst genuine cultural opportunities visiting local schools or villages can easily be included in most safari itineraries.
BEST TIME FOR VIEWING WILDLIFE
WHERE TO GO IN KENYA WITH KIDS
Whilst Kenya offers a number of different wildlife regions to consider, the Masai Mara is Kenya’s most amazing safari area. If you are looking for a shorter ‘wow’ safari before heading to the beach, a Masai Mara family safari is likely to be your best option. The beautiful open plains offer incredible game viewing and are home to the annual wildebeest migration from July to October. Even within a quick four day family safari, you are likely to see everything you hoped for.
For slightly longer safaris (six or seven nights), we highly recommend the Laikipia region in central Kenya in combination with the Masai Mara. The extensive Laikipia region includes a number of private big game conservancies as well as some exclusive wilderness and community areas which offer a multitude of different activities and experiences – from walking and horse-riding adventures to fly-camping, river ‘tubing’ and cultural experiences. Many properties in Laikipia have swimming pools and the landscape is very different to the Masai Mara.
Please click on the links below to explore Kenya’s superb safari regions, and do not hesitate to Contact Us to discuss the different areas and what may suit your family best.

OTHER REGIONS IN KENYA
Kenya family friendly lodges.
From traditional tented camps to ranch-style safari houses and luxury safari lodges, Kenya is able to offer a huge variety of family-friendly camps and lodges. To create the best possible Kenya family vacation for you, we will ask you to consider how much luxury you would prefer, how adventurous and active you wish to be, whether you require specific family accommodation (larger rooms with extra beds or multi-roomed units), whether you have any specific interests to take into account, and whether your kids will benefit from access to a swimming pool in between activities.
As mentioned, there are so many family-friendly safari camps and lodges in Kenya, but here is a selection that we find work incredibly well for families. Please do not hesitate to Contact Us to discuss individual properties and what they could offer your family.

We have a wealth of experience designing child-friendly safaris in Kenya, and can tailor-make your itinerary to suit the ages of your children and your personal requirements. The initial considerations for any family visiting Kenya would be how long to spend on safari, which regions to prioritise and whether to spend some time on the beach. Naturally the budget side of things is a crucial factor as well, especially if you are aiming for a luxury family holiday.
Although all our holidays are individually tailored to suit personal requirements, please see a selection of example itineraries below, which can all be very family-friendly. Please note all our example itineraries are designed just to show what is possible and can all be amended to suit personal requirements. We would always expect to talk to you in detail before recommending an exact itinerary.

BEST AFRICA FAMILY SAFARI HOLIDAYS IN KENYA & TANZANIA A Bond With the Wildlife and Each Other
Why are families a natural fit for wildlife safaris? And why do our children have such a natural appreciation for animals? Could it be that we see something of ourselves at the sight of a mother cheetah and her cubs? Does that family of elephants, protecting their small youngsters as they march to a watering hole remind us of our own caring instincts?
Whatever it is about animal families that stirs within us something deep and comforting, these feelings are only enhanced when we share the wonders found on a safari adventure with our own families.
No matter if family means very young children, school-aged kids, teens, or three generations traveling to Africa, family safari holidays are a wonderful time of discovery and appreciation not just of the wildlife but of each other.
Just call , WhatsApp , email us or fill online enquiry form and one of our friendly travel advisors will have you on the road to adventure – your own personalized African family safari.
And not far from Nairobi , a trip to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage will delight everyone – from toddlers to grandparents – with the wonderful sight of dozens of baby elephants, drinking from giant baby bottles, playing in the mud, and even kicking soccer balls!
Your Family Will Thrive
Suddenly coming upon a herd of gazelle in a clearing, even the littlest members of your family will be astonished by nature’s gifts, starting a lifelong curiosity about wildlife and our place in the natural world.
With our experienced guides, school-age children can become “Junior Rangers”, going on nature walks and discovering animal tracks, small game, and the closeup sights and sounds of the savannah. Plus, many of our lodges offer kids’ clubs with storytelling sessions and babysitting services.
Your teens will have perhaps the most radical experience as a safari has the special power to separate them from their devices. There’s nothing quite like being mere feet from a lion to make a teen look up from their screen and discover there’s an awesome world beyond TikTok .
We can also arrange for conservation programs for your teen, opportunities to meet local people, and even participate in community wildlife projects.
Family Beaches
You know the names of the great parks like Masai Mara and Serengeti but do you know about Diani , Mombasa , and Zanzibar ? These last are the stunning beach resorts of Kenya and Tanzania .
Completing your wildlife journey, your African family safari can also include beach time at these world-class coasts. Clean, uncrowded, and pristine with excellent snorkeling and diving, your youngsters will delight in the company of turtles, dolphins, and vast schools of technicolor tropical fish.
So How Safe Is Africa for Families?
Kenya and Tanzania are very safe countries. The people are warm and welcoming and happy to share their cultures, their beautiful landscapes, and their world of wildlife with you. We are certain that you and your family will be comfortable and happily received in our cities, towns, villages, and of course, our exciting parks.
By booking with an expert local outfitter like Africa Kenya Safaris , you are assured that your safety is our top priority. Besides your very knowledgeable and experienced guide, our Home Office is on call for you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. From the moment you touch down in Kenya or Tanzania to our goodbye hugs, we are available to address any concerns you might have.
It's Your Family Safari
When you contact us and speak with one of our friendly travel experts, they will have lots of questions about your family, their likes, expectations, and hopes for this very special journey.
You too will have lots of questions and here are some of our suggestions for topics to discuss with your AKS travel expert:
FAMILY-FRIENDLY SAFARI ACCOMMODATIONS
Of course, you’ll want family-friendly lodgings that are roomy and comfortable. And provide activities for the youngsters and the entire family, like dances around the boma.
FAMILY SAFARI GUIDES
Ask about our guides, their training, and their experience. The secret to a great safari is a great guide!
FAMILY ACTIVITIES
You’ll want to know which activities are offered for the different ages of your children, ensuring that everyone will be happy and engaged.
SAFETY FOR FAMILY SAFARIS
What sorts of safety practices does the company have in place during the safari, on the road, and at accommodations?
Tips For A Successful Family Safari
Here are some obvious and not-so-obvious practical ideas to ensure a safe and stress-free family safari.
VACCINATIONS
Check with your doctor about vaccinations well before your departure. Don’t forget your usual medications plus sunscreen and bug repellent.
PACKING FOR FAMILY SAFARIS
Pack light – you and your kids should wear neutral-colored clothing for the cool mornings and warm days, and that doesn’t show safari dust.
Everyone, especially the children will enjoy taking photos of “their” wildlife. Africa Kenya Safaris also provides binoculars for close-up views of the animals.
EXPECTATIONS
The whole family should talk about what they expect to see, do, and feel while on safari. Parents can share thoughts about respect for animals in the wild and our place in this great ecosystem we all share.

- Beach and Bush Safari Holidays in Kenya
Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris
By Matthys van Aswegen
Safari Travel Planner
Kenya is ideally suited to a beach and bush holiday. Indeed, you could say that it is tailor-made for this combination of activities. Kenya Safari tour options are covered in detail elsewhere on this website.
Still, we would broadly recommend 7-10 days on safari, ideally split between two or three major reserves, broken up with overnight stays at Lake Nakuru and/or one of the Tree Hotels of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. This could be followed with 4-7 days at a beach resort such as Diani, Malindi, or Watamu.

Family safari holidays in Kenya have it all: wildlife-watching, outdoor adventure, tropical beaches, and action sports to suit everyone. A Kenyan family safari offers you the chance to fly in a hot-air balloon, enjoy a guided walk in the wilderness, meet a baby elephant, and kiss a giraffe. Children adore Kenya. Kids can learn bushcraft from a Maasai warrior, zip-line through a forest, and ride a camel along the shores of the Indian Ocean.
As the original and still the best safari destination, our hotels, lodges, and tented camps promise spacious family rooms, luxury swimming pools, extensive grounds, nature walks, baby-sitting, and children’s menus. Dedicated ‘edutainment’ teams offer a wide range of family-friendly pursuits from cookery to bead-making, and from guiding a baby turtle down to the sea to paddle boarding with dolphins.

Nairobi National Park
Legend has it that Nairobi National Park was founded because the colonial settlers grew increasingly exasperated by lions. It wasn’t just that they wandered the streets by night or that the graveyard with filled with headstones reading ‘killed by lions’. It was that they trampled the flowerbeds. The lions, the settlers said, would have to…

Kenya’s conservancies, the new safari experience
Ask any motorcyclist why they prefer a bike to a car and they’ll probably tell you that they prefer to be IN the moment rather than looking at life through a window. A favourite with visitors to Mombasa and the coast, the Tamarind Dhow experience promises a five-course dinner on the deck of an authentic ocean-going dhow. Diani day trips: snorkelling from a traditional dhow
Diani is one of the world’s most popular spots for a snorkelling safari. Here the traditional dhows, known as ngalawa, fish the clear blue waters of the lagoons. Home of the tailor-made safari holiday you've been dreaming about
Your bespoke Kenya safari holiday is all about abundant game viewing, jaw-dropping scenery and long sandy beaches.
A Kenya safari holiday really captures the spirit of East Africa, as well as the imaginations of all who venture to its vast savannahs, tropical shores and dramatic peaks. Widely regarded as being the home of the safari, Kenya boasts over fifty National Parks and Reserves, offering some of the most unique game viewing experiences on the planet. Combined with the seemingly never-ending Indian Ocean coastline, it’s easy to see why Kenya is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Africa.
Safari Wildlife
Kenya’s Parks and Reserves are ranked amongst the best in the world, playing host to iconic and endangered species including the Big Five. Kenya unquestionably offers unrivalled wildlife viewing.
The Masai Mara is of course the most famous park in Kenya thanks to the vast amount of wildlife it supports. If you're looking for the chance to see Big Cats, or the Great Migration, then this is the place to be. The Great Migration happens between July and October, when torrents of wildebeest and zebra flood the savannahs of the Masai Mara, because the grass is always greener! These herbivores are of course followed by plenty of predators looking for an easy meal so it is also a brilliant time of year to see big cats and perhaps even a chase.
If it’s elephants you’re after, head to Amboseli or Tsavo, for rhino Lewa and for unusual endemic wildlife, Samburu is the place to be. Meanwhile bird-watchers should check out the Great Rift Valley, with its shimmering pink flamingo-filled lagoons and over 450 other bird species to look out for.
For the ultimate Kenya safari experience, we would recommend coming two or more safari areas so that you can experience the countrys diverse landscape and a spot a true variety of safari animals.
Safari activities
As well as classic game drives and bush walks which are a real treat for the sense, Kenya safaris are all about doing something a little different such as hot air ballooning over the Masai Mara , camel trekking across the Laikipia Plateau,horse-riding in Lewa or spending the night fly camping beneath the twinkling stars.
Kenya culture
Kenya is also known for its tribal diversity, and it’s likely your safari guide will a warrior or tribe member from the community. Visits to villages can be arranged which gives a fascinating insight into the local culture and children can take part in 'warrior academies' where they learn to identity different animal tracks and poop, as well as warrior techniques to light as fire.
National Parks and Private Conservancies
Many of our guests choose to stay in a private conservancy for their Kenyan safari.as these offer a more private experience with fewer vehicles, as well as the chance to go off-road and try alterative safari activities such as walking or riding. Private conservancies border the national parks with no barriers to the animals so they can wander freely between the two, but the public cannot. For example the Masai Mara National Park borders the Mara North and Mara Naboisho.
Kenyan beaches
A Kenya safari and beach holiday is one of our most popular trip options and with good reason! Relax by Kenya's striking blue waters lapping gently against pristine white sand beaches, Kenya’s coast offers an idyllic getaway for honeymooners, families, and everyone in between.
Boasting hundreds of miles of coral reefs, world-class diving, deep-sea fishing and enough watersports activities to keep you entertained for weeks, a stay in Watamu, Mombasa or Lamu is the perfect way to end your safari holiday.
Best time to visit
A Kenya safari offers fantastic wildlife viewing throughout the year, but there are two times of year that are particularly special.
The first is July to September which is the country's dry season, and is also when the Great Migration happens. The short grasses of the dry season make spotting wildlife easy and temperatures tend to be warm in the day and cool at night. The dry season is also a brilliant time to visit the Kenyan coast where you can enjoy sunny days without the risk of rain.
December to February is also a wonderful time for a Kenyan holiday. A safari Christmas and some winter sun is a very special holiday you will be sure to remember, and the rains are short during December. January and February is typically the calving season giving you a wonderful chance to see new born animals and migratory birds. There are fewer visitors at this time of year to July to September making it a brilliant time of year for those wanting to avoid the crowd and see some fantastic wildlife amongst the long, green grasses.
The peak rainy season is between March and May where it can get very wet and rain for much of the day - this is best avoided is possible.

When to go to Kenya
Find out the best time to visit Kenya with our month by month guide.
January is a great time for wildlife viewing. The landscapes are lush and green after the 'short rains' and newborn animals can been seen. It is hot, but brief afternoon or evening showers cool things down, without compromising your safari. Over on the coast the sea is clear, making it ideal for diving and snorkelling, and the days are warm and bright.
February is an ideal time to visit Kenya, and great for game viewing. The landscapes are green and thriving thanks to the short rains, and newborn animals will be hopping around the plains. There maybe a few afternoon showers which are welcome in the heat, and don't impact on wildlife viewing. Water clarify is excellent at the moment, which is good news for watersports enthusiasts. And if you want to spot a whale shark, now is the time to try.
Still a good option for wildlife viewing and diving, although with the 'long rains' just around the corner, expect wetter and hotter weather.
April brings the start of the 'long rains' which means game reserves and national parks become muddy and harder to drive around. Over on the coast it's hot and wet, so it isn't the best time of year to travel. Some camps and lodges close during this period.
The 'long rains' continue into May, making park tracks difficult to navigate in the mud, and the coast very warm and wet. There will be less accommodation choice at this time as several lodges and camps during this period.
June is a beautiful time of year to visit Kenya, with the rains receding to just light showers, and the long dry season not far ahead. The high grasses can sometimes make it more of a challenge to spot game, but the landscapes are lush and some animals may begin arriving early for the migration. At altitude nights can be cool, but elsewhere the temperature is pleasant.
July marks the beginning of the great migration into the Masai Mara , and with warm and generally dry weather, this is a great time of year to visit. Days are sunny, skies are blue and there isn't too much dust around, so it's a great time for photography.
The migration is now in full swing in the Masai Mara, with lots of river crossing action, so if you want to see those massive herds of wildebeest and zebra, now is the time to come. Game viewing in general is excellent and it's one of the most popular times of year to visit, so some of the main parks do become crowded. Temperatures are warm and dry.
Game viewing continues to be excellent, and the weather is generally dry so this is another ideal month to visit Kenya's parks. The bush is less dense and as animals gather around waterholes and rivers it makes wildlife spotting much easier.
October is a great time if you want to avoid the crowds and don't mind the temperature slowly starting to rise. There may be a few short showers, but game viewing remains excellent with the end of the migration, and it's a good time to holiday anywhere in Kenya.
November heralds the start of the 'short rains' and with hotter temperatures some camps are closed. The Mara however is still open, and despite sometimes stormy skies, game viewing is still good. Fewer crowds and lower prices make this an attractive month to visit. Over on the coast water clarify is good for snorkelling and diving.
The 'short rains' are bringing the landscapes back to life, and as the plains start to become green again, wildlife viewing remains good, and it's a great time for birding. Some camps are closed (mainly in the north of Kenya) but many others remain open. The showers tend to fall in the afternoons and don't impact greatly on a safari. Take advantage of reduced visitor numbers and lower prices.

Kenya Family Safaris – Perfect For Families
For what reasons do wildlife safaris work so well with families? What gives our kids such a soft spot for furry friends? Is it possible that when we observe a mother cheetah with her cubs, we recognize a part of ourselves? Does the sight of that herd of elephants guarding their young as they make their way to a watering hole make us think of our own maternal tendencies?
Whatever it is about animal families that makes us feel safe and secure is amplified when we bring our own families along on safari to experience the beauties together.
A family safari is an incredible opportunity for everyone involved, from the youngest travelers to the oldest, to learn about and appreciate the African landscape and its inhabitants.
In order to tailor your Kenya Safaris experience to your family’s needs, your personal travel agent will inquire about your children’s ages, hobbies, and the types of animals and activities you hope to see during your trip. A safari tailored to your family’s interests and requirements is what we offer.
The Massai Mara Reserve is a great example; not only can large cats captivate children and even the most jaded teenagers, but the park also provides many options for exploration. If you want your kids to experience a culture that’s completely different from their own, take them on a hot air balloon safari over the park or take them to a Maasai community. They might even be invited to participate in a classic jumping dance!
Near Nairobi, at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage , visitors of all ages may marvel at the dozens of infant elephants as they play in the mud, drink from enormous bottles, and even kick soccer balls!
Even the youngest members of your family will be amazed by the natural wonders they encounter when they unexpectedly come across a gazelle herd in a clearing. This experience is sure to spark a lifetime fascination with wildlife and our role in the environment.
Children as young as elementary school can join our seasoned guides on nature walks as “Junior Rangers,” learning about the savannah’s unique wildlife, plants, and noises up close and personal. Additionally, a number of our lodges provide babysitting and children’s clubs that include storytelling sessions.
A safari has the unique ability to disconnect your kids from their gadgets, so they will have an experience that is truly out of this world. Being in close proximity to a lion is sure to inspire any adolescent to take a break from their phone and see the amazing world outside of TikTok.
We can also help your teen find conservation programs, local events, and volunteer opportunities to help out with wildlife.

Tips For A Successful Kenya Family Safari
Vaccinations: Inquire about necessary immunizations with your doctor plenty of time before you leave. In addition to your regular prescriptions, make sure to bring along sunscreen and bug repellant.
Family Safari Guides: Take the time to inquire about our guides’ backgrounds, education, and expertise. A fantastic safari is incomplete without an excellent guide.
Family Activities: To make sure that all of your children have fun and stay involved, you should find out what kinds of activities are available for each age group.
Safety for Family Safaris: How does the organization ensure the safety of its clients on the safari, in transportation, and at lodgings
Family-friendly Safari Accommodations: Of course, you should look for spacious and pleasant accommodations that are suitable for families. Plus, organize fun things to do, like dancing around the boma, that the whole family may enjoy.
Packing For Family Safaris: Travel light; for both hot and chilly mornings and afternoons, wear neutral-colored clothing that will not show safari dust. Bring along light clothing for the kids.
Cameras: The kids, in particular, will have a blast capturing images of “their” native animals. In order to have a better look at the animals up close, Africa Kenya Safaris also provides binoculars.
Expectations: Before going on safari, the whole family should have a conversation about their expectations for the trip. As a family, we can reflect about our role in the natural world and the need of protecting wild animals.
How special is Kenya?
Kenya is one of the two countries in East Africa where unaltered Annual Migration of mammal grazers occurs. Annual Migration is an all-year event where mammal grazers with over a million wildebeest, thousands of zebra and gazelles move in pursue fresh water and pastures to graze on. In Kenya, the Great Migration occurs in the Masai Mara National Reserve, located in the southern part of the country at the southernmost boundary that doubles as an international boundary between Kenya and Tanzania .
The long journey of the Annual Wildebeest Migration with other mammal grazers is usually concluded in the Masai Mara National Reserve, and they congregate here in large numbers before they migrate back to the Serengeti in Tanzania. The great migration can be seen all year round however, the Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara reaches the climax between the months of June to November, and many visitors visit the Reserve during these periods of the year.

Where to go on your Kenya safari holiday?
Kenya’s most famous national park is the Masai Mara , and with good reason. The volume of wildlife found here is unrivalled anywhere in Africa, with the exception of the Serengeti , in neighbouring Tanzania . The main reserve is complemented by adjoining private conservancies, which allow for the same epic experience, but in a more private setting.
Kenya is also home to many equally magnificent, but less well-known safari destinations. Your tailor-made tour highlights could include Lewa and Laikipia in the north, famed for industry-leading conservation successes. We’re also big fans of the scenic Rift Valley Lakes , and the remote wilds of Samburu .
Following an adventure in the wild, stunning stretches of coastline and a world of aquatic exploration await. It’s all here, encompassed in one country. Truly, a one-stop shop for one of the greatest safari tours imaginable.
What to see on a Kenya Family Safari?
Welcome to world-class game viewing. Kenya is home to the Great Migration : over two million wildebeest and zebra make their way from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara, and back, each year. A Kenya safari holiday will also include the chance to spy the Big Five , as well as countless other animals and birds.
With such topographic diversity, each region has its own unique ecosystem and creatures. For wildlife fans, we recommend including two different safari areas, where possible, to experience the unique diversity of Kenya.
Kenya has something for everyone, which is why it’s amongst the best destinations for a luxury family safari .
Where to stay on Kenya safari tours?
Kenya has a bounty of accommodation options, designed to suit every taste. Creative camps and lodges draw on the elements around them, offering a diversity not found anywhere else. Breakfast with giraffes in an old Manor House , stay ‘ on top of the world ‘ overlooking the Masai Mara, or travel back in time to the birth of safari, with some 1920s hospitality .
What to do?
Immersive experiences will be amongst your tour highlights, and connect your safari to the pulse of the place. Take in quality time with indigenous tribespeople or give yourself over to experiences of the wild in ways you never imagined. Explore on foot , on horseback, aboard a camel, a helicopter, or a hot-air balloon . Then, complete the adventure by snorkelling and SCUBA diving along the coastline’s colourful reefs.

Family Safari and Beach Holidays in Kenya
Kenya is a brilliant place for a family holiday. Between the incredible wildlife safaris and the stunning tropical beaches, your children will really feel like they've hit the jackpot!
Watching your kids gasp in amazement at roaming herds of elephant and playful cheetah cubs will be an experience that you'll never forget and something that they'll carry with them forever. Travelling as a family will actually double the magic of your safari as you'll get to see it all through the eyes of a very excited child! Not only this, but Kenya is home to vibrant tribal cultures that will fascinate your children and help them learn about the world we live in.
Having a private driver-guide for the safari also means that you can generally please yourselves when out on safari. You dictate the pace of the safari and as it just your family and the driver-guide in the vehicle, what you do when out on the plains is totally up to you. If your child has a fascination with giraffe and you want to spend all day looking for them - then you can! You have nobody to please but yourselves.
After a few excitable days searching out Africa's incredible wildlife, you head to the Kenyan Coast for some family beach bliss. While the kids build sandcastles and clown around in the surf of the Indian Ocean or join other children in daily activities hosted by the hotel's Kids Club, you can sit back, soak up the tropical sunshine and get a well-earned rest. There's a whole host of water activities available for the family to enjoy together, including reef snorkelling, kayaking and even diving.
With something for everyone, Kenya is a family holiday winner and something that your kids will be talking about for years to come!
We have put together a selection of some of our favourite family holidays below.
