How to get from Bergen to Flam (and the fjords)

Norway, also known as the Land of Midnight Sun, is famous for its stunning fjords, magnificent mountains, and alluring skies. As such, you can find Norwegian fjords all over the country from the southern coast to the northern Arctic belt, but a handful of them truly stand out above the rest. The western parts of Norway boast the most beautiful fjords in the world, which is why you might be eager to get from Bergen to Flam for your trip!

Flåm is where you can find one of the best fjords in Norway (in my opinion), and also where I grew up!

A lot of tourists visit Norway for 3 reasons: to ride the world’s most beautiful train ride, witness the magic of Northern lights (Aurora Borealis), and sail/ cruise through the remarkable fjords. Did you know that 2 of these can be covered just by visiting Flam ? The Flåmsbana train journey and the UNESCO recognised Nærøyfjord! Flåm is the getaway to the most beautiful areas in Norway and a great starting point to explore the fjords.

Side note : it *is* possible to see the Northern Lights in Flåm as well, but this is quite rare.

One of the most frequent questions that I get asked about Norway relates to ‘how to get from Bergen to Flam’. I grew up in Aurland (just 10 minutes from Flam) and currently live in Bergen. Hence, I think I am quite well suited to answer this question! As I have myself travelled from Bergen to Flam more times than I can count and by using different modes of transport, I think I will be able to do justice to this query.

To be honest, the best mode of transport between Bergen and Flåm is highly subjective . It depends on what kind of scenery you are looking for and what amount of time you have in hand. Below, I have listed down all the ways to get from Bergen to Flam (and Flam to Bergen). Each has its own pros and cons; thus, you will have to weigh in everything before deciding how you want to get to Flam.

How to get from Bergen to Flam

Looking for the simple answer? There are 5 different ways to get from Bergen to Flam. Yes, you read that right! After telling you that the distance between Bergen and Flam is only 170 kilometres, I can understand that this is a little surprising.

Since Flam is a highly frequented place, more and more travel options have popped up, with an increasing number of tourists year after year. Though I have highlighted all the ways to get from Bergen to Flam below, the same options apply if you want to travel in reverse as well (except the tours). For your convenience, I have also mentioned all the official websites where you can make your bookings to travel from Bergen to Flam!

Bergen to Flam by train

Total journey time : 3.5 hours Where to book : Vy website

If you are looking for the most scenic way to get from Bergen to Flam, I recommend travelling via train without a blink of an eye. The train is not only the easiest mode of transport to book but is also equipped with comfortable seating, clean restrooms, and large passenger windows. The only catch is, you have to switch trains at Myrdal, before continuing on to Flåm down the Flåm valley.

The first leg of the journey is from Bergen to Myrdal, the mountain station. This train ride is around 2 hours long. It is from Myrdal that you catch the famed Flamsbana Railway all the way to Flam. The Flam Railway ride time is about 1 hour.

The train tickets from Bergen to Flam sell out really fast, especially during the peak travel season (summer, mainly from mid-June to early August). So, it will be best if you make your bookings 2-3 months before your arrival (the website linked above usually release tickets around 3 months in advance). You can book your tickets from Norway’s largest (and main) train company, Vy.

A note on Vy : Formerly known as Norges Statsbaner (NSB), NSB and Nettbuss have now joined hands to become one company, named Vy. This means you can book both train and bus tickets on the same website.

As mentioned above, part of the train journey from Bergen to Flam is on the Flam Railway, where you will see the changing landscapes, cascading waterfalls, green pastures, and colourful wooden houses along the Flåm Valley, all from the comfort of your train window. Flamsbana is the world’s steepest train ride and takes you from high mountains down to the fjords. It is Norway’s #1 tourist attraction with good reason, and one of the top things to do in Flåm .

Believe me, after having experienced this marvellous journey; you will forget the hassle of switching trains at Myrdal (Myrdal is a very small station, so to be honest, it isn’t much hassle at all).

Bergen to Flam by bus

Total journey time : 3 hours Where to book : Vybuss (train, then bus) or Nor-way (direct)

Getting from Bergen to Flam (or Flåm to Bergen) by bus is the second most scenic mode of transport after the train ride. The bus has comfortable seats, excellent wi-fi, charging points, and (of course) seatbelts – note that these are mandatory to wear, and will keep you nice and safely in your seat.

You don’t even have to make any bus switches between Bergen and Flåm, which might make this a better option over the train. Especially if you have already booked return tickets with the Flåm Railway during your stay in Flåm.

All you have to do is sit back, relax, and admire the scenery passing by. The buses have big glass windows from where you can watch the changing landscapes.

The bus route from Bergen to Flam is via several tunnels (over 30 of them, actually!), and you will see charming villages, mountain ranges, and incredible lakes while on the drive. You can book your bus tickets from Bergen to Flam with Nor-Way Bussekspress. They have one departure a day, and their booking interface is quite easy to understand.

You can also make the bus bookings with Nettbuss, which is now called Vy, as mentioned above. However, when you book your bus tickets with Vy, you actually travel from Bergen to Voss via a train (which is so weird and a little annoying), and then switch buses to travel onwards to Flam. So, make sure to book in advance with Nor-Way Bussekspress to avoid all the switching hassle.

Bergen to Flam by car

Total journey time : 2.5 to 3 hours Where to book : Europcar or Rentcars

If you fancy driving from Bergen to Flam all by yourself, you can rent a car from the center or airport of Bergen, as there are several car rentals available at Bergen airport and the city centre. The car route is equally scenic as that of the bus (for obvious reasons), but in addition, you get the flexibility to stop anywhere in between, take your time along the windy roads, and even make detours to nearby areas.

Please note , however, that stopping along the road to take photos is not okay. Please make sure you are safely pulled over before you start snapping away. And only use your emergency lights in actual emergencies.

From Bergen airport or the city centre, start by following directions for Åsane or Arna and then get onto the E16 highway that will take you all the way to Flam (follow signs to Voss along E16). Voss is located about an hour before you reach Flåm, and this is also the last place before Flåm where you can visit the Norwegian Vinmonopolet. You know, the only place to buy bottles of wine.. So if you want to enjoy a glass of red from your hotel balcony in Flåm , make sure to stop in Voss along the way.

If you are self-driving anywhere in Norway, you need to stay up-to-date on the information about road conditions or road blocks due to landslides, tunnel closures, or other incidents. You can find all this information on the Norwegian Road Directory website . Bookmark this website before your trip and check the road conditions daily.

Fun fact : Checking the Vegvesen website is very common when driving in western Norway, as there are landslides, accidents and tunnel closures more often than you’d think. However, when I told my friend who lives in Kristiansand that we should check the website before our drive to Oslo, he laughed in my face. The roads in eastern Norway are much more straight-forward.

Also, it might be worth noting that we drive on the right side of the road in Norway, that wearing seat belts are mandatory, we give the right of the way to pedestrians, and that you should never exceed the speed limits on windy roads (or anywhere, really).

Bergen to Flam by boat

Total journey time : 5.5 to 6 hours Where to book : Norled

What better way to see the fjords than travel on the fjords? The express boats from Bergen to Flam operate only in the summers, so if you are travelling in the high season, you can do just that.

This beautiful journey will take you out of the Bergen city center towards the coast, before heading back into the fjords. The journey takes you into the Sognefjord and then all the way up and across its smaller branch, the Aurlandsfjord. At the end of the Aurlandsfjord, you will find Flåm.

The journey from Bergen to Flam by boat is certainly longer than travelling by train, bus or car, but it is worthwhile if you have the time – it is quite a beautiful experience, and you get to see the entire Sognefjord along the way.

Currently, just one express boat service operates the boats from Bergen to Flam, named Norled (linked above). They have one departure daily from April to September, and then just one return. The boat starts from Bergen in the morning and returns from Flam in the afternoon. As always, book the tickets in advance to get a confirmed reservation – I’m sure you know by now, but the fjords can get busy.

Join a tour from Bergen

The final way to get from Norway’s second largest city to the fjords is to join one of the great tours available to travellers.

Many tour operators have packages from Bergen to see the fjords in Flam. Companies like GoFjords and FjordTours have tour packages that start from Bergen and take you to Flam, along with lots of sightseeing and activities on the route. If you feel that booking and planning the journey entirely by yourself is time-consuming and involves a lot of hassle, you can book one such tour with them. Although being a bit expensive, these tours are certainly a great way to see the fjords!

FjordTours’ Norway in a Nutshell is one such tour that takes you from Bergen to Myrdal by train, Myrdal to Flåm on the Flamsbana train, along the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord on the cruise from Flam to Gudvangen, and then back to Bergen in a bus. I strongly feel that booking this journey separately by yourself will save you a lot of money. To answer your questions, the best way to go from Oslo to Bergen is by plane (fastest) or train (most scenic). However, if you want to see Flåm, I would do this on the way! My suggestion would be to take the train from Oslo to Flåm, and continue by bus from there to Bergen (3 hours). Getting to Flåm

There are several excellent and exciting ways of getting to Flåm on one of our Nutshell tours . This area is said to be one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world. The Sognefjord is called the King of the fjords for a good reason: it is the longest ice-free fjord in the world. Tour Highlights

The Nærøyfjord

The Nærøyfjord is the narrowest and best-known of the many arms of the Sognefjord. Surrounded by towering mountains up to 1,700 meters high, this arm of the Sognefjord is amazingly beautiful. With its steep mountainsides, hanging valleys, towering peaks, waterfalls, and small hamlets, this fjord is perhaps the most outstanding natural attraction in Norway. The Nærøyfjord is 20 km long, only 250 meters across at its narrowest and a mere 12 meters at its shallowest. The surrounding mountains reach heights of 1,660 meters, and the fjord is one of the multiple highlights on several of our tours.

The Aurlandsfjord

The Aurlandsfjord is a 17-kilometer arm of the world’s second-longest fjord, the Sognefjord, and starts in Flåm and ends at the mountain Beitelen, which separates the Aurlandsfjord from the Nærøyfjord. Together with the Nærøyfjord, the Aurlandsfjord is one of the most picturesque fjords in the world. This stunning fjord is a part of the World Heritage area and is surrounded by high mountains that reach heights of over 1,400 meters.

The Flåmsbana Railway

Flåmsbana or Flåm Railway  is a spectacular train journey that offers a panoramic view of some of the wildest and most magnificent nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape. The 20 km-long train ride took 20 years to build and is one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world. On the train ride that operates between Myrdal and Flåm, you can see rivers cutting through deep ravines, waterfalls cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains, and mountain farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes. 

The Bergen Railway

The Bergen Railway is the 500-kilometer-long railway line between Bergen and Oslo. It has several times been named one of the world's best railway experiences.

The best ways to get from Bergen to Flam, Norway

Are you visiting Norway and trying to figure out how to travel from Bergen to Flåm and the fjords ? Then I wrote this guide for you.

Most people who visit Norway dream of seeing it all. They want to spend some time in the Norwegian cities, such as Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger. They also want to see the Northern lights, and dream of trips up north learning about the Sami culture and meeting reindeer. But most of all, they want to see the fjords.

As a result, one question I am often asked by people planning their trips to Norway is how they can get from Oslo or Bergen to Flam. And who can blame them?

Side note : if you want to see all the things I mentioned above on your trip to Norway, please read this before you go .

Flam (or Flåm, if you have a fancy Norwegian keyboard like me) is the gateway to one of the most beautiful areas in the world, and a great starting point if you want to see the UNESCO World Heritage Nærøyfjord ( one of the best fjords in Norway ).

So, since I live in Bergen, but was born and raised near Flåm, I’m about to share with you all the ways you can get from Bergen to Flam.

Spending a short amount of time in Bergen, but want to make the most of it? Here are some of my favourite tours of Bergen!

One thing you should know is that there are several ways to get from Bergen to Flam, each with their own pros and cons.

Whether you prefer booking your own trips or travelling with a scheduled tour, and depending on how scenic you want the trip to be, you’ll find your perfect mode of transportation in this post!

How to get from Bergen to Flam (and from Flam to Bergen)

You’ll be surprised when I tell you that there are actually 5 different ways to get from Bergen to Flam .

Considering that the two destinations are only around 170 kilometers apart (105 mi), you may not have guessed this. But, with so many travellers wanting to see the fjords during their trip to Bergen, more options have appeared over the years. Which is great, as you’ll be able to find the best mode of transportation for you!

Before you leave Bergen, though, make sure to visit some of my favourite restaurants in town!

Regardless of how you decide to travel, please take note of the websites I share with you in this post. They are the official websites for whatever mode of transport I mention , and they are the ones you should check before you set off on your trip.

In western Norway, not only are the roads tricky, but we also have rather frequent land slides that can lead to road closures and train cancellations. Therefore, staying up to date on news and road conditions is vital when traveling in Norway.

Also, please take careful note of which website and tour operator you have booked through (if booking a tour). They will be the ones responsible for you if anything goes wrong.

Not that you should expect things to go wrong all the time, but if you have booked a Norway in a Nutshell tour through FjordTours, for example, and the train (which is operated by Vy) isn’t running for some reason, it is FjordTours (and not Vy) you should be focusing your efforts on contacting. But more on this in each section below.

One more thing to mention. These options are also helpful for travelling from Flam to Bergen, with the exception of the tours (unless they are round trip). However, each tour company offers returns as well, but please double check this when you book.

Another great route from Bergen takes you to Hardanger and the beautiful Hardangerfjord . Along the way, I recommend stopping and seeing Ulvik , which is absolutely stunning.

Getting from Bergen to Flam by train

Traveling between Bergen and Flam by train is by far the most scenic way to get there. It is also quite easy to book, as there is only one company in Norway that operates the trains; Vy ( formerly NSB/Norges Statsbaner, which roughly translates to Norway’s National Railroads ).

There is an exception to this rule, however, and that goes for rail road that are considered ‘tourist trains’. These can be privately owned, all though the Vy usually owns a share of them.

Now, with there only being one company in Norway operating the trains, there is only one website you need to know about, and it’s this one right here . That’s the Vy website, and it is the only official website for booking train tickets in Norway.

Now, remember how I said that train is the most scenic way to travel from Bergen to Flam? That’s because a part of this journey is on the Flam Railway . You know, the world famous, “most scenic train ride in the world” Flam Railway.

In most cases, having to switch trains for a trip that only takes around 3 hours in total is a hassle, but in this case, you should be ecstatic.

The train from Bergen will take you a few stops (Voss included) to Myrdal, a mountain station which doesn’t seem too impressive. But, this is where you switch trains and get on the famous Flam Railway in order to travel all the way down the mountain to the fjords.

Basically, the Flam Railway is one of the major reasons people visit Flam , and it is one of Norway’s #1 tourist attractions . By taking the train from Bergen to Flam, you get to cross it off your list by the time you have arrived in the little village (usually the Flam Railway tickets are only sold as return tickets to visitors already in Flam).

Travel Hack: Getting Flam Railway Tickets

So, as mentioned, the Flam Railway tickets are usually sold as return tickets, starting in Flam and returning from Myrdal (the end station) with the same train.

These return tickets are sold on the Norway’s Best website , and sell out quite quickly. That’s why I always advise anyone hoping to buy tickets for the Flam Railway to get them in advance (as early as possible) and to include the cancellation protection so that you can change or cancel the tickets free of charge.

But, there is another way to get the Flam Railway tickets, and to experience this scenic journey.

You have probably guessed it by now, and that is to travel by train from Flam to Bergen (or vice versa). What many people don’t know is that the Flam Railway (one way) ticket is automatically included as part of your trip between Bergen and Flam, as it is the only train operating between the Myrdal and Flam stations!

Vy has a certain amount of one-way tickets on the Flam Railway available on their website for those traveling with them, and so this is a surefire way to ensure that you get your hands on those Flam Railway tickets before they sell out. Simply head to the Vy website and book your tickets all the way from Bergen to the fjords!

Getting from Bergen to Flam by bus

I’ve got a confession to make. I prefer travelling by bus over trains in Norway.

I know, I know, it’s quite surprising, as most people would always rather travel by train. But the buses in Norway are amazing, trust me. There are outlets to charge your phone and laptop, comfortable seats and seatbelts ( they are mandatory in Norway, so please wear them ), and wifi that actually works ( which is more than you can say about Vy, so please don’t expect to get any work done on the Bergen to Flam train ).

Travelling by bus between Bergen and Flam is also a rather scenic way to see Norway, in addition to it being quite comfortable. Bus drivers in Norway are also notoriously friendly, so please give them a great smile when you board.

The journey takes around 3 hours , and there are no bus switches involved. So you can just sit back, relax and make sure to get off at the right stop. You’ll be going through over 30 tunnels along the way, so if you’re one of those people that are fascinated by them, you’re in for a treat.

There used to be two companies (that I know of) that operate buses between Flam and Bergen. One of them (Nor-Way Bussekspress) has two to three departures a day, which can be booked here .

The other one, which used to be my favourite, was formerly known as NettBuss. However, in 2019 they merged with NSB to become Vy, and in a genius move they have stopped operating buses between Bergen and Voss.

This means that when you book your “bus” ticket with Vy, you’ll actually be travelling by train from Bergen to Voss, and then changing to a bus there to travel onwards to Flåm.

I am not very happy about his, as I travel between Bergen and Flåm quite often. So, if you can, I recommend that you book with Nor-Way if you want to travel by bus.

Hopefully, if they have enough travellers they’ll be able to put in more routes.

Travelling between Bergen and Flam by car

Accessing the fjords from Bergen is also completely doable if you decide to rent a car . There are car rentals available at Bergen airport, as well as in the city centre.

By renting a car in Norway, you have the freedom to stop along the way as needed, take your time along the windy roads, and arrive in Flåm when you decide to.

Please note that using the emergency lights in Norway is not considered appropriate if you are only stopping to take a photo. Also, stopping along the road is not okay, and can cause serious accidents. Make sure to read up on driving in Norway before your trip, to avoid pissing off the locals.

Driving from Bergen to Flåm is quite simple, and takes about 2,5-3 hours.

How to drive from Bergen to Flåm

From Flesland (Bergen airport) or the city itself, follow the signs towards Åsane or Arna. Your goal is to get on the E16 main road, and follow it all the way to the fjords! Once you start seeing signs to Voss, you can follow these too. Flåm is about an hour past Voss.

If you are travelling Norway by car, please make sure to stay up to date with any road works or accidents along the way.

As mentioned, western Norway and the fjords are prone to land slides that could block the way, and we have also had some tunnel fires that have closed the roads for weeks.

Luckily, there is one single website where you can find all this information, and you should bookmark it before your trip, and check it daily on the days when you are driving. It is the Norwegian Road Directory website, and you can find it here .

Please note that the link to the map view of any incidents and closures is in Norwegian only. It is still quite helpful, though, as you can use the map to see what kind of incidents are along the road, and then use Google Translate to get an idea of what happened.

Additionally, you can call 175 (from Norway) or +47 815 48 991 (from abroad) to get updated traffic information in English. These are the numbers for the road directory.

That’s also where you’ll find information about any tunnel works resulting in closed roads (often they will let convoys of cars through at specific times, so do check in advance), and also if there is a risk of the mountain crossings closing (not that there are any mountains to cross between Flåm and Bergen, but it’s good to know).

Getting from Bergen to Flåm by boat

I’m sure you were excited about this one. What better way to travel to the fjords than by travelling ON the fjords?

In the summer, it is possible to travel between Bergen and Flåm by boat. It takes a lot longer than travelling by car, train or bus, as you have to head out to the coast of Norway in order to get back into the Sognefjord (the world’s longest fjord). But, it is definitely worth it if you have the time!

The Express Boat travels between Bergen and Flåm (starting in Bergen in the morning and returning from Flåm in the afternoon) once a day from April 1st to the 30th of September.

Finally; joining a tour from Bergen

I’ll keep this one short, as there are several options to see the fjords from Bergen by joining a tour from the city. Companies such as GoFjords and FjordTours will take you safely from the Norwegian city to Flåm, and make sure you see everything you can along the way.

These tours are a great way to see the fjords if you are feeling overwhelmed by the thought of booking and planning everything yourself. Find the famous Norway in a Nutshell tour here , and some other (newer) tours here .

If you ask me (and I am assuming you are), I would strongly recommend booking your journey to the fjords yourself . The tours above are often a little more expensive than booking separately, and Norway in a Nutshell isn’t actually running with their own transportation (not many people know this). They use the Vy train to Myrdal, the Flåm Railway down to Flåm, the fjord cruise run Norway’s Best/The Fjords, and then the bus back to Bergen.

Here’s how to book the Norway in a Nutshell tour on your own!

Additionally, there are private tours available to join from Bergen, that will take you to Flåm at your own pace. These usually include a private guide for the day, and some fun activity in Flåm (such as the RIB FjordSafari or cycling the Flåm Valley).

Find and book these tours (in advance) below. Note that these must be booked as far in advance as possible. Not just to save your spot, but also to ensure they are running. These small companies don’t have many guides, and if their guide is booked for something else on a given day, the tour won’t be available.

Great info! Question about a place to stay between Flam and Bergen… We are taking the high speed ferry but would like spend an overnight on the way, and catch the same ferry the next day. Any recommendations? An obvious choice is Balestrand. Any others? Thank you!

Hi Rob! I personally think Balestrand is the best place to stay 🙂 Another alternative is Høyanger, but Balestrand is definitely more quaint (and beautiful, imo). The Kviknes Hotel ( https://www.booking.com/hotel/no/kviknes.en.html?aid=859729 ) there is a beautiful, historic hotel, and Balestrand is a nice, quiet village compared to Flåm (which is busier in the summer).
