Imagine waking up to a view so stunning it rivals the Grand Canyon, right from your room. This is the experience you can expect at the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Oman!

Tucked away in the Jabal Akhdar mountain range, this luxury resort offers a peaceful and secluded retreat for travelers seeking a unique experience in Oman. But don’t let its remote location fool you – Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar has all the amenities and activities to keep you entertained during your stay.

Our 2-night stay was nothing short of spectacular and in this detailed review, I want to show you why this hotel deserves a spot on your bucket list.

Arriving at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar

Perched as one of the world’s highest luxury resorts, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar not only offers awe-inspiring views but also a welcoming break from the heat you typically find in more urban areas like Muscat.

The area has a different climate and while you can enjoy a comfortable 25-28°C (77-83°F) during the day, nights can get quite chilly with temperatures dropping as low as 10°C (50°F). So be sure to pack accordingly!

Getting to Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is as unique as the hotel itself. Since it’s located high in the Jabal Akhdar mountains, the resort is accessible only by a 4×4 due to the steep mountain roads.

Although the road is well-paved and maintained and technically could be driven in a regular car, the checkpoint at Birkat Al Mouz enforces the use of 4×4 vehicles for safety reasons.

However, if you don’t want to rent a 4×4 car, the resort offers convenient transfer services, which can be arranged from Muscat International Airport or the checkpoint if you’re driving a standard car.

We decided to rent a car and drive ourselves, which turned out to be part of the adventure. The drive from Muscat took us around 2 hours and offered stunning views along the way.

As soon as we pulled up in the resort’s parking area, we were greeted by friendly staff who parked our car and escorted us to the reception area.

The check-in process was smooth and efficient, and we were soon on our way to our villa with a buggy ride.

Rooms & Villas

Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar has 82 canyon-view rooms and 33 private pool villas, each offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

All the rooms have private balconies overlooking the canyon, while the villas have their own infinity pools – perfect for a romantic getaway or a family vacation.

One Bedroom Cliff Pool Villa

We were lucky enough to stay in one of the cliff pool villas and it was truly an unforgettable experience. I think this is one of the best room types at the resort and I’m sure you will agree with me when you see the view!

The villa spans over 188 square meters (2,023 sqft) so it’s absolutely massive. Right after you enter, you will find yourself in the spacious living area, which has a comfortable sofa and a TV. This is where you’ll find the minibar and the safe, and also the complimentary coffee and tea set.

The bedroom is also quite spacious with a comfortable king-size bed, TV, and a small seating area by the window. There are two walk-in wardrobes and a stylish bathroom with double vanities, a separate tub, and a rain shower.

But the best part of the villa is undoubtedly the private heated infinity pool and terrace with sun loungers. The views from the pool and the terrace are just unreal, and we spent many hours just relaxing and taking in the beauty of the canyon.

Infinity pool

Even if you don’t have a private pool in your villa, the resort has a stunning infinity pool for all guests to enjoy. It overlooks the canyon and is surrounded by comfortable sun loungers, making it the perfect spot to relax and soak up the breathtaking views.

The pool is also heated so you can take a dip even on cooler days and there’s also a hot tub for a truly relaxing experience.

I recommend staying out until sunset as it’s a beautiful experience to witness the colors changing over the canyon.

The spa at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar offers a variety of treatments and wellness experiences, including massages, facials, and body scrubs.

There are also separate male and female thermal suites, each with a sauna, steam room, indoor relaxation chambers, and an outdoor garden. These suites are complimentary for all guests to use, but you have to reserve your time slot in advance.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any available slots that would fit our schedule, but that’s just one more reason to come back!

If you have your heart set on visiting the spa, I would recommend booking your timeslot as soon as you arrive at the resort to avoid disappointment.

Fitness Center

If you’re looking to stay active during your vacation, the resort has a well-equipped fitness center with cardio and strength training machines. There’s also an outdoor tennis court and basketball hoops so you can get your workout while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

This center also serves as the meeting point for outdoor activities, but I’ll talk more about that in a separate section.

Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar offers a variety of dining options to suit any taste. Here is a quick overview of each dining option:

• Al Maisan: This is the main restaurant at the resort, offering buffet breakfast and dinner with a mix of international and local cuisines.
• Bella Vista: A charming Italian restaurant set on the cliff overlooking the canyon. Perfect for a quick lunch or a romantic dinner.
• Al Qalaa: Located in the fort tower, this dining option serves traditional Omani cuisine with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
• Al Baha: This cafe and deli is located in the beautiful courtyard of the resort, offering light meals, snacks, and drinks throughout the day.
• Al Burj: This rooftop lounge is the perfect spot for a sunset cocktail or shisha while enjoying panoramic views.

We had breakfast and dinner at Al Maisan during our stay, and both meals were excellent. The buffet spread is quite extensive with a mix of Western and Middle Eastern dishes, including traditional Omani specialties.

I especially loved the fresh coconuts and tropical fruits for breakfast, while the grilled meats and shawarma station were highlights of dinner.

For both meals, we opted to sit outside on the terrace overlooking the gardens. It’s such a peaceful and beautiful setting but it gets a bit chilly in the evenings, so remember to bring a jacket.

Bella Vista

This restaurant was our go-to spot for lunch and it never disappointed. The dishes were absolutely delicious and the views from the terrace were simply unbeatable.

This is where you’ll find Diana’s Point as well – a long glass walk leads to the viewing platform where Princess Diana once stood during her visit to Oman. You can also choose to have your lunch at the viewing platform, which is definitely a unique experience.

Dining by Design

If you’re looking for a truly special dining experience, the resort offers a Dining by Design option where you can have a private dinner set up on the glass viewing platform overlooking the canyon.

This is perfect for a romantic celebration or just a special evening with your loved one. Watching the sunset and stargazing while enjoying a delicious meal was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us.

You can choose from four different menus: Mediterranean, Arabian Classics, Omani Inspired, and Well-Being. We went with the Omani Inspired and the Arabian Classics menu and each dish was expertly prepared and presented.

It was definitely a highlight of our stay at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique dining experience.

In-Villa Dining

If you know me, you know I love to order room service breakfast whenever I stay at a hotel or resort. Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar did not disappoint with their delicious breakfast spread and the option to have it delivered straight to our villa.

What’s even more special is that if you stay in one of the pool villas, you can have your breakfast served on a floating tray in your private pool. Talk about luxury!

We did this on our last morning and it was the perfect way to end our stay at the resort. The peaceful setting, surrounded by stunning views and delicious food was a truly memorable experience.

One of the most unique things about Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is its location – nestled high up in the mountains, surrounded by stunning scenery and rugged landscape.

The resort offers a variety of experiences for guests to explore this beautiful setting. This includes various hikes, via ferrata, cooking classes, and even a cinema under the stars.

The Jabal Activity Wall is hands down the most thrilling activity at the resort. It’s basically a via ferrata route across the cliff edge that takes you through multiple levels and also includes a zipline.

Although the activity sounds amazing, to be honest, it would have been a bit too much adrenaline for us so we decided to opt for a more relaxing hike instead. The resort offers a variety of guided hikes, from easy strolls to more challenging treks.

We went on the Three Village Culture Walk which took us through three traditional Omani villages and gave us a glimpse into the local way of life. The view and scenery were absolutely breathtaking, and our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.

We also happened to be visiting during the rose season in mid-April, which made the whole experience even more magical. The scent of the roses was heavenly and we were also able to see how rose water is traditionally made at one of the village homes.

The walk was very leisurely and it took us around 2 hours to complete the hike. However, it does have some narrow paths so it may not be suitable for those with a fear of heights or mobility issues.

Final Thoughts

Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar truly exceeded our expectations in every way. From the breathtaking location to the luxurious villas and top-notch service, it was an unforgettable experience.

The stunning Anantara Al Jabal Al Ahkdar is located in the Saiq Plateau, about 2000m above sea level. You will stay right in the heart of the Jabal Akhdar , one of the most picturesque corners of Oman. The rooms are contained within low-rise buildings that are connected by stone walkways through the verdant gardens. These are crisscrossed by waterways that resemble traditional Omani irrigation falajs. The 82 Canyon View Rooms all have breathtaking views. You can opt for the Premier Rooms on the ground floor and the Deluxe Rooms on the upper floor, with better views. The rooms are stylishly furnished.  You’ll find  balconies, gleaming wooden floors, and bathrooms with both bath and rain-shower. This is all complemented with indulgent Amouage toiletries. First impression The Middle Eastern mountain retreat we’ve all been waiting for. Staff Super-slick, dressed in traditional kuma caps and desert-chic dishdashas. Food & drink A greatest hits of Arabic mezze and Moroccan-inspired, crushed-ice cocktails. Bed & bath Polished mashrabiya wood, Aladdin brass treasures and marble tubs. The crowd Oil-rich Gulf jet-setters and well-travelled expats on a splurge. In a nutshell Anantara does Oman for grown-ups – as good as the Gulf gets.

Set the scene On the rim of Arabia’s most outrageously beautiful canyon, this is one of Oman’s most ambitious wilderness hotels . It’s storybook Arabia, with a crenelated fort tower and an evocative souq-like hub with corridors leading to interlinked courtyards, shaded gardens and villas. The sophisticated design is a reflection of Oman’s medieval heritage, encouraging travel into the country’s past, and the signature vibe is dirt-under-the-nails mountaintop escapism. Mornings are ushered in with dawn yoga and sunrise walks to land-that-time-forgot villages; evenings are spent smoking shisha or scanning the sky through the rooftop telescope.

What’s the story? The hotel is part of the Bangkok -based Anantara group, the globe-hopping hotel collection that focuses on luxury landmark retreats and clear-conscience sustainability . Here, it’s a sleight-of-hand trick that meshes compulsively fussy Asian service with finely tuned local cultural tropes. To stay here is to experience Oman’s lesser-known canyonlands firsthand.

What can we expect from our room? In keeping with the Gulf’s obsession for rooms so big you can get lost between the bed and bathroom, there’s plenty of space for romance or family hi-jnks. The canyon-view doubles are spread over two storeys (the higher ones have the more incredible panoramas, of course) and rooms are decorated with straight-from-the-souk treasure chests and coffee pots. You can soak up the canyon views for hours, but step through the doors of one of the gigantic pool villas and it’ll feel like entering a whole new story.

How about the food and drink? The line-up includes all-day Al Maisan, with its wide-frame bird’s-eye-view terrace, and Al Qalaa, for that only-in-Oman experience of dining inside a fort tower. Both serve up a zaatar-sprinkled menu loaded with mezze and Arabian Sea specialities – sumac-spiced Omani lobster is a must. At the poolside Italian restaurant , order the lighter-than-air beef carpaccio with ruffles of Parmesan or a fluffy risotto served with a side of sweeping views.

Anything to say about the service? Unlike the rest of the Gulf, you won’t find staff fast-tracked in from the Philippines . The effortlessly lovely team mostly come from surrounding mountain villages and desert towns, meaning they’re as likely to offer an insightful lesson in Omani history or a helpful phrase to pull out of your pocket as they are to carry your case. But for those seeking solitude, the hotel is so vast it’s easy to potter around in peace. The service is faultless, orchestrated by German expat and GM Dagmar Symes, who is well versed in the ways of the Middle East, having worked there for many years.

What sort of person comes here? An old-school Agatha Christie cast of Gulf princesses, Russian doctors, American businessmen and British TV stars. This is a hotel that likes big adventure, so prepare to eavesdrop on the odd expedition team or pro-climbing crew preparing for a daredevil mountain mission.

What’s the neighbourhood scene like? Tree-climbing goats as hiking buddies and the odd desert snake (but only if you going looking for them). The hotel is rooted in its sense of place; four-wheel-drive backcountry tours include journeys down swollen riverbed roads to damask-rose plantations and trapped-in-time towns riddled with tales.

Anything we missed? This being the glitzy, glamorous Gulf there has to be a hyperbolic superlative or two. In this case, the wow factors are the highest infinity pool in the region and the highest tennis court in the Middle East . There’ll soon be the highest stargazing observatory too.

A final note: is it worth it? It’s almost unbelievable that Jabal Akhdar has been kept secret for so long. You can embrace all sorts of adventures while clipped to a carabiner or delve into off-map Oman in a way that hasn’t been possible until now.

A Stay At Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Oman

Around 2 hours’ drive from Muscat , high up on Jebel Akhdar, which in Arabic means green mountain , there is a spot named after a princess.

Back in 1986, a princess and her prince husband arrived by helicopter at this spot overlooking the Saiq Plateau, 2,000m above sea level. The royal couple stayed in the area for around six hours.

During this time, while enjoying the mesmerising canyon views, she read a book, while the prince painted the landscape in watercolours. She was Princess Diana, he was Prince Charles. And after that visit, the spot was named Diana’s Point.

Today, Diana’s Point is located at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar , the luxury mountain resort that is a retreat for those in search of peace, tranquillity and more pleasant temperatures during the summer months.

Unlike Diana and Charles, I arrived at the resort by 4×4. The road that leads to Jebel Akhdar is so steep that there is a police station at the start of the road to ensure adventurous tourists don’t try to drive up in a regular car. As you zigzag up the mountain, you cross small villages and can enjoy the rugged mountain scenery.

Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Review: My Experience

Upon my arrival at the resort, I was greeted by the hotel team, mostly Omani men wearing a traditional dishdasha (sort of a tunic) and offered some refreshments. Those included dates, a glass of pomegranate juice, one of the symbols of hospitality, a cold towel and some macarons.

The hotel main building resembles a traditional Omani fort and was built using traditional techniques. Soon after check-in, I was escorted to my room.

Leaving the reception area, we crossed an impressive courtyard decorated in Arabian style, with several lounges and a central fire pit that turned out to be particularly popular in the evenings.

My Deluxe Canyon View Room at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar

I stayed in a Deluxe Canyon View room, which I found spacious and elegant. As the name suggests, these rooms are located on the rim of the canyon of the Saiq plateau, offering stunning views of the surrounding area with its rugged mountains.

It has predominantly earth tones and some intricate woodwork in the headboard and on the ceiling, inspired by the traditional woodworks found in old Omani houses and forts.

It has a large and very comfortable king-size bed, a sofa, widescreen TV and a dark wooden cupboard with the minibar, an espresso machine and 2 litres of bottled water (complimentary).

When you wake up, you can enjoy the view of the rugged landscape without even getting out of bed. The bathroom more like a spa, with a separate bath and shower room and toiletries by Elemis.

There is even a soap menu and guests can choose their favourite fragrance. It even explains the benefits each fragrance brings, based on the principles of aromatherapy.

The room also has a balcony with a comfortable seating area, from where I enjoyed two incredible sunsets.

The Facilities at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar

The hotel benefits enormously from its location and the views over the rugged mountain valley are the main feature. Having said that, the facilities at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar blend the stunning location with Omani tradition and international hospitality. That makes it one of the best resorts in the Middle East.

The resort courtyard is the perfect place to relax reading a book or to smoke shisha on a quiet evening. On regular evenings, there is a ceremony of lighting the fire pit – here and around the resort.

From there, there is a garden with native mountain plants and tree. Amid the plants and small trees, there are several narrow streams that not only decorate the area but help cool and water the garden.

There is also a beautiful infinity pool that has become the most popular place in the resort on warmer days. From the pool area you can still enjoy those breathtaking mountain views and some unforgettable sunsets. There are also two outdoor jacuzzis next to the pool and a small kids pool.

The resort also offers a number of activities that include yoga, archery, a three-village tour and a walk on the cliff face (via Ferrata). The walk on the side of the cliff is their Signature Activity and I highly recommend it.

Even though I am not that comfortable with heights, I went for it. My instructor Jeddah’s attitude gave me a lot of confidence and I must say, it was the most amazing feeling walking on steps, hanging on the cliffside and ziplining with that view that even more incredible than from the resort.

I will have to write a separate post just for it, because it was very a special moment not only on this trip, but in my life.

As if it weren’t enough, the resort also has a Balance Fitness Centre, a kids’ club and even a tennis court.

The Anantara Spa

As with any Anantara property, here you can unwind with a spa treatment in The Spa. When I arrived, it was impossible not to notice the small fountain in the reception area. It even had a small stream that ended in a larger decoration pool. I was greeted by the receptionist and introduced to the therapist who was going to look after me for the next hour.

In addition to five luxury treatment rooms, some of which can accommodate couples, the spa also has a hammam, a beauty salon, sauna and steam rooms, as well as a relaxation area with a jacuzzi. I chose the Anantara Signature Massage, which was so good and so relaxing that I even fell asleep and had to be wakened up.

Restaurants at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar

There are three restaurants, one bar and one cafe at the resort. Al Maisan is their all-day dining and serves Omani and international cuisine in a huge buffet. I especially liked their lamb curry and their selection of desserts.

The restaurant is decorated with two large arches and several that gives it a lot of character. I highly recommend choosing an outdoor table by the (decorative) pool at breakfast time, so you can enjoy the view of the whole resort below you.

I also had lunch at Bella Vista, the resort’s Italian restaurant located by the infinity pool and close to Diana’s Point.

Since I had had a late breakfast, I ordered fried calamari as a starter, followed by a delicious risotto and washed down with a refreshing fruit mocktail. Service in both restaurants was very attentive and efficient.

Unfortunately, the cafe, the lounge and Al Qalaa Restaurant, the Middle Eastern restaurant, were closed, as it was the beginning of Ramadan and very low season.

Private Villas

More than 50% of the resort’s clientele is comprised of A-list celebrities, royalty and top company executives who expect a higher level of privacy.

This is one of the top reasons to stay at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar: privacy, luxury and the location. To cater to these guests, the resort has 30 villas with private pool, offering one to three bedrooms.

I had a tour of some of these villas and I must say, the level of opulence is unparalleled. Some villas have a canyonside infinity pool, bathrooms larger than many London flats, private garage for up to three cars and come with a personal butler. There are some very impressive touches, such as a 24-carat gold deck of cards!

Final Thoughts on Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar

The resort delivers luxury, elegance, excellent service and delicious food. Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar was the last hotel I stayed in Oman on this specific trip and was the perfect way to wrap up my visit.

Offering a unique experience in one of the most beautiful and peaceful parts of the Middle East, it is perfect for many types of travellers. Couples will find it quiet and romantic, families will find enough activities to keep members of all ages happy and even solo travellers can have a great time, as I did.

Beautiful villas with outstanding view. Very nice resort and atmosphere

Obviously incredibly beautiful hotel - amazing views for sunset and the rooms were really breathtaking. The pool was lovely, despite the wind making it a bit chilly! And the gardens were also really beautiful to wander around and see all the different regional plants. The spa was also great, and my massage treatment was very relaxing. All the spaces at the Anantara were stunning and it was a lovely place to be. Whilst our 3.5 year old was also very well catered for - she especially enjoyed using the bikes around the hotel grounds - the hotel is better equipped for older children who can enjoy the rock climbing and other activities. We did manage part of the hike you can do from the hotel, but it gets hot quickly and although most of the way is manageable, it was quite demanding for a young child!
