Upstate New York

42 unique things to do in upstate new york + hidden gems.

things to do in upstate new york

Ahh, Upstate New York. One of America’s most hidden gems. Most people, when they think of New York, they immediately assume New York City. But did you know that NYC is less than 1% of the landmass of New York State? There are endless things to do in Upstate New York, too! From cute small towns to breathtaking waterfalls to fun young cities. Here are our favorite Upstate New York hidden gems!

Fun Fact: The dictionary defines “Upstate” as whatever is north of you. Since most of New York State’s population lives in the NYC region, we’ll define Upstate New York relative to NYC. AKA: Everything north of NYC. From the Adirondacks to Buffalo to the Catskills. Don’t fight us on this one. In addition to the dictionary, even Wikipedia agrees with this definition !

Hiking & Farm Experience with Llamas/Alpacas

fun day trips in new york state

If you love a hands-on experience with animals, this is the perfect activity! Llamas and alpacas are soft and cuddly creatures with an exciting history. From homestead owner and educator Andrea , you can learn all about camelids (the biological family containing alpaca and llama members) while getting up close and personal.

Walk through magnificent pastures and fields, strolling alongside llamas and alpacas with a large or private group. Don’t forget to take a llama selfie with the countryside backdrop!

Farm Animal Cuddles

A piglet being cuddled by a woman

There are a ton of farm animal sanctuaries and small farms in Upstate New York. I would recommend avoiding sanctuaries that house wild and exotic animals without researching beforehand; look into how they procured the animals, the history of the establishment, whether they breed these animals, etc.

On the other hand, farm animal sanctuaries are generally small farms that have saved or purchased animals to keep them away from slaughterhouses or similar fates. These farms may breed and raise animals themselves, but their goal is to keep these creatures happy and safe. Animals housed here are generally comfortable interacting with humans, especially children, individuals with autism, or people who suffer from anxiety. Cuddling up with a pig or goat can really brighten your day–except when a goat is in a mood and turns mean!

Cool Off in a Swimming Hole

People swimming at Peekamoose Blue Hole

Lakes scattered across the Catskill Mountains are perfect places to rent a cabin for the weekend. There are tons of swimming holes and hikes in the region, perfect for cooling off in on a hot summer day. With swimming holes growing in popularity, keep in mind that they may get crowded. Peekamoose Blue Hole is the most well-known, making it one of the most sought-after spots for many travelers.

You can visit a few lesser-known swimming holes if you want to avoid crowds. Diamond Notch Falls lies at the end of several different hiking trails. Kaaterskill Falls is another great swimming spot requiring a steep hike, with a swimming hole below the waterfall; avoid this spot on the weekends to miss the crowds.

Otter Falls is another great swimming hole located at the basin of 30-foot cascading falls. In the wet months, the pool is 6 to 8 feet deep. The dry months leave a shallow pool that is still perfect for cooling off in after a hike.

Visit the Town of Woodstock

fun day trips in new york state

It may surprise you to know that Woodstock, NY was not the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. This famous spectacle actually occurred in Bethel, NY, 60 miles southwest. If you’re looking to attend a show on these infamous grounds, performances at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts are still running strong!

Aside from this misconception, Woodstock is still an amazing town worth visiting. The local shops, eateries, and cafes exude the same ideology and allure behind the draw of the Woodstock Music Festival. There are amazing boutiques on Main Street where you can support local artisans and artists of the Catskills.

Tour Option: There is a Woodstock Rock n’ Roll Tour if you’re into music history!

Rail Explorers Railroad Tours

rail explorers phoenicia ny

See the natural sights of Phoenicia, NY, with this unique railroad tour! Rail Explorers set you up on the tracks with an electric pedal-powered rail bike. Tours are offered at all hours (day or night), but I recommend a daytime tour to catch the views–unless it’s Halloween!

This experience is accessible to all and requires light exercise, which is perfect for doing with friends or family. While you may not get tired, paying attention on the tracks so as not to bump into the person in front or back of you is important.

I recommend booking the Golden Hour tour in the fall. Before your ride, hit the iconic Phoenicia Diner in town. Staying overnight? Hotel Mountain Brook in Kingston is a cute and cozy place to stay.

The Finger Lakes, NY

If you couldn’t tell by now, we LOVE the Finger Lakes region. This region has so many cute places to stay and even more things to keep you busy.

Explore Harriet Tubman’s Home

Harriet Tubman’s Home in Upstate New York

Step into the prior home of Harriet Tubman in Auburn, New York. This residence is where she spent the latter part of her life, and it’s now a United States National Park . Tours of the home are offered twice a day, and you must reserve a spot in advance. Harriet Tubman was one of American history’s most inspirational abolitionists, political activists, and female military leaders. Learning about her in her former home is quite the experience.

As of March 2022, tours inside the property were prohibited, and only outdoor tours were available. Call to check before making your tour reservation to confirm.

Join a Finger Lakes Wine Tasting Tour

A glass of wine being held with a vineyard in the Finger Lakes, Upstate New York in the background

The Finger Lakes tasting is fantastic, with three popular trails to choose from: Cayuga Wine Trail, Seneca Lake Wine Trail, and Keuka Wine Trail. There are over a hundred wineries across the region between these three trails, with endless samples of local creations. You can visit each location on your own (with a safe ride, of course, or by booking private transportation) or book a Finger Lakes wine tour.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is one of our favorite wineries in the Finger Lakes, especially if you love sipping Rieslings. Rieslings rule the Finger Lakes region, so if you are a white wine drinker, this is where you want to be.

Go Kayaking or Boating on a Finger Lake

A boat on a lake in the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes is a kayaking paradise. You can kayak and boat most everywhere, with the most popular spots being Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, and Canandaigua Lake. Boating is so popular in the region that most vacation homes will actually store kayaks for their guests to use on their trips. If that’s not the case, you can easily rent one at several local agencies .

If you own your kayak, you just have to get it out on the water! Ten launch sites are available across several lakes for visitors to use. For a full boat launch list , check with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation for details.

You can also book a boat tour with local operators who can often combine boat tours with winery visits and other fun activities. Ending your kayak or boat trip with a bottle of local Finger Lakes wine is the cherry on top of a fantastic day.

Dine at FLX Table in Geneva

New York City is not the only stellar food scene in the state. Foodies love the Finger Lakes for it’s amazing dining opportunities and unique cuisine. F.L.X. Table in Geneva is a small eatery with only 14 seats offering a 4-course, pre-set meal for dinner from Thursday to Monday. You get to share the space with the chefs crafting your meal in an intimate and charming atmosphere that connects everyone in the room. It feels like a personal dinner party!

I love that the prix fixe menu constantly changes, bringing fresh meal options to fit the season. Past favorites include dishes like Chicken Royal served with quinoa and burgundy truffle. Reservations can be tough at F.L.X., but there are other options to taste this cuisine through F.L.X. Bird for delicious fried chicken.

Horseback Riding Tours in Burdett

fun day trips in new york state

We love Watkins Glen State Park –its natural beauty is unparallel to any park you’ll find in most of the state.  Horseback riding allows you to explore the park from a unique vantage point, with tours available through Painted Bar Stables . Stroll by on horseback some of the best waterfalls in New York State! It won’t take long to see why this region is known for its natural wonders and great wine.

Horseback riding may be intimidating for some, but not to worry. Guided tours include expert riders who will help you along on your journey. Listen up because they’ll also share some pretty cool facts about the Finger Lakes area.

Hike to Amazing Finger Lakes Waterfalls

A woman at Buttermilk Falls State Park

Hiking in the Finger Lakes is epic, with so many state parks, outdoor areas, and a national forest to explore.  To find hiking options near you, check with the closest state park to where you’re staying for assistance. Hikes across this region will range in difficulty, so you want to ensure you find one to suit your ability.

Buttermilk Falls State Park is one of our favorites, with stunning waterfalls and gorges. We also recommend checking out Finger Lakes National Forest . This gem has 30 miles of trails scattered through lush woods and serene pastures that sometimes have cattle grazing depending on the season.

Shop at the Ithaca Farmers Market

A woman shopping at Ithaca Farmers Market in Upstate New York things to do

Tucked away on the shores of Lake Cayuga is the friendly young college town of Ithaca. We love this area, especially the Ithaca Farmers Market , which has been operating since 1973! You can peruse more than 130 vendors at the market selling produce and handmade goodies. If you’re looking to hike or horseback ride in the Finger Lakes, this is a great place to stop and grab some snacks for your trip. This is one of my favorite towns in the Finger Lakes !

During the summer months, the market is spread across a park on the Cayuga Lake waterfront with spectacular views to pair with your local finds. The market is set up in the winter months at the Triphammer Marketplace to allow growers a full year to sell. Check the website for changes.

Explore Corning’s Museum of Glass

Glasses at Corning's Museum of Glass

Corning may be a small city, but it has one of the world’s largest spaces dedicated to the art of contemporary glass making and design! The more museums I’ve visited in my travels, the more they feel the same–a little dark, full of paintings in ornate frames, room after room of an older grand old building once some famous or rich’s person’s home.  But the Museum of Glass in Corning truly blew me away.

This attraction allows you to get up close to the glass-blowing process, watching artists create before your eyes. You can even learn to make glass yourself by signing up for a short class ! Everyone in your group will enjoy the interactive galleries and exhibits teaching you about the history of glassmaking and the secrets behind this stunning art technique.

Ride on a Hot Air Balloon Over Letchworth State Park

A waterfall at Letchworth State Park with a hot air balloon flying over it

Letchworth State Park has some of the most gorgeous waterfalls in the entire country–there’s a reason it’s nicknamed “the Grand Canyon of the East!” One of the most amazing ways to experience the full beauty of this park is on a hot air balloon ride, soaring above the breathtaking views. Don’t like heights? You can hike and walk instead!

THE Adirondacks REGION

We ADORE the Adirondack Park. Between all the cute towns in the Adirondacks to visit year-round and the host of hidden gems in Upstate New York, you’ll quickly fall in love with this region too.

Lake Gorge Ice Castles and Caves

ice castles lake george

The Ice Castles and Caves in Lake George are an award-winning attraction every ice and snow lover has to experience. Kids and adults alike love to explore the ice mazes, slides, tunnels, fountains, and more. As the season continues, more is added to the Ice Castles, so you’re never visiting the same place twice.

It’s going to be cold in this frozen world, so dress warmly. You can purchase tickets online for the Ice Castles from the end of January to the end of February. The attraction could extend beyond these months if the weather permits.

Hike the Mountains of the Adirondacks

A woman sitting on rocks at the summit of Whiteface Mountain

  • Indian Head Hike : You can still catch killer views of the Adirondacks without scaling the high peaks. Indian Head has a rocky overlook with stellar views of the Lower Ausable Lake without putting too much effort into getting there. It’s not an easy breezy hike, but it’s certainly not the most difficult around.
  • Cobble Lookout : If you want more of a walk than a hike, the trail to Cobble Head is only 2 ½ miles and great for leisurely stroll. It only takes about an hour, and you’re still rewarded with picturesque views.
  • Whiteface Mountain : For hiking enthusiasts looking for a challenge, Whiteface Mountain is a popular area to challenge your skill. Hiking on Whiteface is open all year round, rain or shine, ice or snow. Make sure you’re prepared for this hike and start early to get the most out of your day.

Tour the Ausable Chasm

fun day trips in new york state

Ausable Chasm is an exciting canyon in the Adirondacks with a ton of activities to keep you busy. You must pay a fee to enter; even the hiking trails cost a fee, but they’re worth it. Paying for a tour will get you a package of tube rides, a guided tour of the canyon and caves, and more.

We recommend taking the day to explore the Ausable Chasm. It’s the perfect attraction for New Yorkers who want to experience the natural beauty in their own backyard.

Snowshoeing in the Adirondacks

A woman snowshoeing in the Adirondacks things to do in Upstate New York

The Adirondacks are one of the best places for an Upstate New York winter getaway if you love to ski. If you’re staying in or near Lake Placid, you have to check out Cascade X-C Ski Center. This place has everything you need, from rentals to apparel to equipment, and 12+ miles of trails! They also have a restaurant and lodging accommodations at the bunkhouse.

Renting an iconic cabin in the mountains is a dream, but it’s not always affordable. Staying at the bunkhouse is a great way to pay discounted rates at the ski center while getting that traditional Upstate New York lodging experience.

Winter Wonderland Lodging Experience

Mirror Lake Inn in the winter

Some of our favorite cute cabin and lodge rentals in Upstate New York are right in the Adirondacks. They range from grand to cozy, but all give you that Great Camp vibe.

  • Whiteface Lodge : Staying at the Whiteface Lodge is experiencing Lake Placid at its finest. This luxury hotel and spa are in the heart of the mountains. It’s surrounded by hiking trails to keep you busy all day, allowing you to end with a massage or a 3-course meal. (Nightcaps are available too!)
  • Other favorite amenities include a two-lane bowling alley and a small movie theatre. This is a wonderful accommodation for those who want to relax for a few days, with tons of onsite entertainment available.
  • Lake Placid Lodge : For a luxury experience that is on the quieter side, try booking a room at the Lake Placid Lodge . There is a gorgeous outdoor space here extending right up to the shores of Lake Placid.
  • Mirror Lake: If you love Mirror Lake as much as we do, you must try staying a night or two at Mirror Lake Inn. Their restaurant + bar is hands down one of our favorite places to eat in Lake Placid!

Swimming/Kayaking in the Adirondack Lakes (Like Lake George)

Lake George with an island and mountains in the background in Upstate New York

Visiting Lake George is the perfect long weekend getaway from New York City and the ultimate Upstate New York experience. Try renting a cabin by the beach for the ultimate lake vacation in the summer. There are a ton of boat tours in the area and places to rent kayaks and water skis, with lessons available to book.

When it gets hot, try grabbing a cool treat from Lake George Ice Cream in town. This is especially perfect for those spending the day at Million Dollar Beach. If you’re looking for a hiking trail to pass the time, Lake George is the gateway to the Adirondacks and has plenty.

Bonus : In the winter, Lake George offers several outdoor opportunities as well. And even hosts a Winter Festival , which includes an ice castle.

The Hudson Valley

Grab a drink at the cider house.

In the fall, the Hudson Valley turns into apple country. And every apple has the capability to turn into a tart, crisp, delicious cider. While not everyone has tried apple cider, this was certainly a popular drink back in the day. Hudson Valley cider mills are bringing back the hype around cider, and there are dozens of places you can go to sample the goods.

Kettleborough Cider House is one of our favorites and has a spectacular view of Shawangunk Ridge. Twin Star Orchards is another premier spot, often providing live music and food to buy. Some cider houses also double as an orchard or farms where you can pick apples!

Take a Private Helicopter Tour in the Hudson Valley

The fall foliage in the Hudson Valley is breathtaking, especially from a bird’s eye view. You can book a Private Fall Foliage Helicopter Tour of the Hudson Valley that will take you high above the tree tops to soak in all the natural fall colors. This trip leaves right from Manhattan and takes about 30 minutes total, perfect for a quick trip out of New York City.

Persue Art at Dia Beacon Museum

A woman visiting Dia Beacon Museum, one of the best things to do in Upstate New York

Love contemporary art? Dia Beacon is a hub for contemporary artists set on the shore of the Hudson River.  The museum itself is in an old Nabisco box-printing favorite, with ethereal nature lighting you must see to believe. Art displays range from the 1960s to the present day and feature a number of rotating exhibits.

If you want to ditch your car (or don’t have one), you can take the Metro-North Hudson Line train from Grand Central Station all the way to Beacon. The museum is within walking distance from there and close to tons of cafés, shops, and restaurants on Main Street. Our favorite places here are All You Knead Artisan Bakers and Reserva Wine Bar .

Visit Hudson Valley Wineries

There’s another way to explore the natural beauties of the Hudson Valley without having to hike around–visiting wineries. Wineries in the Hudson Valley are sprawled across acres of stunning fields, with mountain backgrounds, sometimes with views of lakes and rivers Not to mention, wineries in this area of the state know how to craft a delicious glass of wine!

Robibero Winery near New Paltz has stunning views of the Shawangunk Mountain range–the drive here from New York City is simply gorgeous. Robibero was voted one of the best wineries in the Hudson Valley for handcrafted batches. Other popular spots include Benmarl Winery in the rolling hill of Marlboro with views of the Hudson River and Magnanini Winery, Restaurant & Distillery in Walkill.

Hike Through the Hudson Valley

A girl sitting on a rock, on a hike in Upstate New York, with the trees below as the background

  • Anthony’s Nose : This is a perfect route if you want an easy out-and-back hike you can complete in under 4 hours. Anthony’s Nose boasts fantastic views of the Hudson River, Bear Mountain, and Bear Mountain Bridge. You can take one of two paths up the mountain; my favorite part is the way back!
  • Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze : Set on the Mohonk Preserve, this unique hike and rock scramble is challenging. You have to put in a lot of effort to get the reward of the view, but it’s worth every second. The viewpoint overlooks Shawangunk Ridge and its beautiful surroundings.
  • Mount Beacon : Mount Beacon checks all the boxes for me when it comes to a perfect hike. This is not an easy breezy hike by any means, but it’s not a grueling struggle either. The views from the top are breathtaking, and it only takes a half day to finish, so you can enjoy some food in downtown Beacon when you’re done.
  • Taconic Mountain : Hiking the Taconic Mountains is challenging, but the reward is worth the effort. This trail is nestled in Dutchess County, where New York meets Connecticut and Massachusetts. When you get to the top, you can see views of the Berkshires, Catskills, and the Hudson River. The trail is rugged and steep. Spikes are recommended if you have them, and bring lots of water.

See Outdoor Sculptures at Storm King Arts Center

Art installations at Storm King Arts Center outdoor area in Upstate New York

Exploring the open-air museum at Storm King Arts Center is out of this world. It beats an old stuffy, dark museum by far and offers visitors access to the country’s largest collection of contemporary outdoor sculptures!

Take your time here wandering around the grounds and really taking in works of art like Suspended or the Three-Legged Buddha . These sculptures are so large you’re barely going to notice any of the other visitors while you are transfixed on all the beautiful pieces.

The Capital Area

The New York State Capital building in Albany, Upstate New York

While it’s always been important to stay involved in government policies on all levels, it’s become even more crucial in the past few years. Life-altering legislation is being fought out at the state level that could significantly affect how we live our lives. So, in return, let’s get to know New York State government a little better!

You can tour the New York State Capital building in Albany and learn all about its history and the government officials who created our state’s legislation. This has to be one of the coolest things to do in New York’s capital city, not to mention meaningful.

Learn About the Underground Railroad Education Center

In New York State, two of the most well-known and influential Black abolitionists were Harriet and Stephen Myers. These two were central figures of the Underground Railroad in the state, and their residence is now home to the Underground Railroad Education Center . Take a tour of the home or attend events to learn all about the role everyday citizens played in ensuring a more democratic future for everyone equally.

Born a slave, Stephen Myers became a leading anti-slavery activist in the northeast region after slavery was abolished in 1827. Together, Harriet and Stephen Myers helped people escape slavery for decades out of their homes and worked on a newspaper that espoused abolitionist ideas.

Central New York Region

Hiking in chittenango falls state park.

The waterfall at Chittenango Falls State Park with a starry sky in the background

Central New York has just as many opportunities to splash in the water as the Finger Lakes and Great Lakes regions.  Just southeast of Syracuse, visitors can stop at Chittenango Falls State Park, where they can have a picnic lunch, take a stroll, or hike to a dazzling waterfall.

We love this small park because it’s easy to walk around and access the waterfalls. It doesn’t take a lot of time or preparation to visit Chittenango Falls State Park, and they’re even a little footbridge for a casual stop.

Shop Around at Syracuse Antiques Exchange

If you love antiques, you have to spend some time at Syracuse Antiques Exchange , featuring four floors full of treasures. This is the largest and longest-running antique store in the state, outside of New York City. You’ll find a huge collection of Victorian and Midcentury furniture, unique lighting fixtures, and tons more to explore.

Antique shopping may be a fun hobby, but it can quickly become costly if you’re not careful. Syracuse Antiques Exchange offers is a great place to buy your first antique, with various price ranges that would set you too far back.

fun day trips in new york state

Commonly known as ‘The Bluffs’ in communities across Central New York, Chimney Bluffs State Park is a picturesque scene on the shores of Lake Ontario with dramatic spikey “bluffs” along the waterfront. Visiting this park on a summer day was one of our favorite things to do in Oswego when we were students there! The bluffs are so dramatic and look stunning on the shore.

There is a myriad of trails along The Bluffs you can walk along. It’s not uncommon to find students from SUNY Oswego or other local colleges soaking up a little bit of warmth on the sand before the cold hits Central New York.

20 Best Places to Visit in Upstate New York

There's plenty to see in New York beyond the Big Apple.

Wendy O'Dea has worked as a travel journalist and content strategist for two decades. Her work has appeared in USA Today, Travel + Leisure, 10best.com, Robb Report , and many other outlets.

Occasionally, when I tell people I'm from New York, their reaction is something along the lines of, "But you don't sound like you're from New York." I wonder, have they forgotten there's a whole state beyond the Big Apple?

But upstate New York, with its majestic mountains, abundance of lakes, and charming small towns, is anything but forgettable as anyone who has been to the region knows. For those who haven't yet visited, or want to see more of it, here are 20 of the best places to visit in upstate New York.

Conesus Lake

Conesus Lake is the westernmost Finger Lake, drawing crowds every year for its July 3rd Ring of Fire, when 10,000 flares are lit along its periphery as fireworks explode overhead. Nearby, the tiny hamlet of Lakeville is home to the Little Lake Brewing brewery, one of the stops along the new Livingston Libation Loop that maps out wineries, cideries, and craft microbreweries around the county. While there, don't miss the recently installed street murals and art along the 90-mile self-guided Inspirations Trail.

Cooperstown

The National Baseball Hall of Fame is just one of the notable attractions worth visiting in this quaint New York village. The Fenimore Art Museum , built on land once owned by novelist James Fenimore Cooper, features an impressive collection of American art, and the Glimmerglass Festival , held each summer, lures opera lovers from far and wide. Visitors to nearby Howe Caverns (about 38 miles east), can go caving or spelunking at New York state's second-most visited natural attraction.

Letchworth State Park

Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park features an impressive gorge carved out over centuries by the Genesee River. You'll find dozens of camera-ready waterfalls where the river dramatically crashes down along shale, limestone, and sandstone cliffs that rise 550 feet at their highest point. A recently built Autism Nature Trail , the first in the country designed for people on the autism spectrum, includes eight marked sensory stations spread across a one-mile loop.

Niagara Falls

In addition to the iconic Niagara Falls, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center is worth a stop to learn more about the history of the Underground Railroad, which often culminated at the Canadian border. Learn about Harriet Tubman and local heroes like John Morrison. The museum's permanent exhibit, " One More River to Cross ," received the 2019 Award of Excellence from the American Association for State and Local History.

Located at the southwestern end of Chautauqua Lake, Jamestown is best known as the hometown of comedienne Lucille Ball. Visitors with an appreciation of comedy should pop by the National Comedy Center — the first museum dedicated to the art of comedy. For something more intellectual, the renowned Chautauqua Institution is a short drive up the lake, and each summer features speakers, performers, and programs focused on the "exploration of the best in human values and the enrichment of life."

Ellicottville

About an hour south of Buffalo, in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, this quaint village exudes charm as witnessed by the well-preserved and restored homes and buildings dating back to the 19th century. It's also where western New York sports enthusiasts and skiers go to mountain bike, hike, or slalom down the 60 slopes and trails at neighboring Holiday Valley Resort .

Seneca Falls

Situated at the north end of Cayuga Lake, this historic spot is believed to be the inspiration for the town of Bedford Falls in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life." Most notably, though, is the important role it played in the women's rights movement, having hosted the first Women's Rights Convention in 1848. The town's Convention Days (each July) attract crowds, and the Women's Rights National Historical Park is worth visiting, too. You can also toast to the suffragettes while wine tasting along one of the many nearby Finger Lakes wine trails.

Skaneateles

This affluent town whose name means "long lake" in native Iroquois is another central New York destination known for its wine tasting and fall foliage. It's also a favorite among avid cyclists who come to pedal the 32-mile trail around the lake. Each year, starting Thanksgiving weekend, the town hosts its annual Dickens Christmas celebration with live entertainment, horse and wagon rides, and a cast of Dickensian characters.

Lake George

Few lakes around New York state are known for scuba diving, so visitors are often surprised to discover that certified divers can explore 18th-century shipwrecks at the bottom of Lake George, including the oldest intact warship in North America. Vacationers flock to this town in the Adirondack region each summer, and the crowds can get thick, but there's also plenty of winter fun to be had, including snowshoeing and a family-focused carnival every February.

Saranac Lake

The Adirondack Mountains have beckoned city dwellers for centuries, including tycoons like the Guggenheims and Vanderbilts, who owned rustic yet luxurious compounds known as the Great Camps. The Point , once a Rockefeller Great Camp, still welcomes guests with all-inclusive stays that harken back to that time, complete with black-tie dinners. The resort is near the village of Saranac Lake, nestled between the mountains and lakes and filled with inviting boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.

Not only is Ithaca a top-notch college town, but it's also a natural wonderland with breathtaking gorges, parks, and waterfalls, like Taughannock Falls, with a height three times that of Niagara Falls. There's an abundance of activities around the city, too, including a botanical garden, boat tours, wine trails, and a self-guided Discovery Trail that highlights local history, astronomy, and earth science. Rumor has it that it was also the birthplace of the ice cream sundae .

Watkins Glen and Montour Falls

In upstate New York, many destinations are defined by their proximity to one of the state's lakes — and so it is, with Watkins Glen, found on the southern end of Seneca Lake. Best known for its legendary auto-racing history, the Watkins Glen International racetrack has played host to countless races, from the Grand Prix to Nascar to Formula One. It's also a good jumping-off point to hit the Seneca Lake Wine Trail , which stretches along the length of the lake and is the largest wine trail in the Finger Lakes.

Saratoga Springs

Just because Saratoga Springs is already known as a popular vacation destination doesn't mean you shouldn't go. There's something classically old-school about spending a day at the races at the famous Saratoga Race Course or at Saratoga Spa State Park , which is a National Historic Landmark. The art scene is solid, too, with impressive productions at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center , the Spa Little Theatre , and other venues.

Thousand Islands

The U.S.-Canadian border snakes through the St. Lawrence River, zigzagging through the spectacular Thousand Islands archipelago where the river meets Lake Ontario. The archipelago consists of about 1,800 islands, from small and craggy to large and lush. Visitors converge here each summer and fall to soak up views of picture-perfect lighthouses and dramatic castles, including the never-inhabited Boldt Castle. On the nearby mainland, towns include Clayton, Cape Vincent, and Sackets Harbor, the latter of which has been designated a New York State Heritage Area.

An affluent upstate New York community, Pittsford is a charmer set on the banks of the Erie Canal. This year, the town — and many others along the path of this historic waterway that connects the Atlantic with the Great Lakes — celebrates its bicentennial with special programming. That includes a twilight boat tour on the Sam Patch, a replica 1800s packet boat. Come summer, visitors and locals dine at Schoen Place overlooking the canal, then line up for homemade ice cream at Pittsford Farms Dairy & Bakery . Other attractions include neighboring Mendon Ponds Park and The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester.

Ausable Chasm

In the eastern Adirondacks, not far from Lake Champlain and the Vermont border, Ausable Chasm is a two-mile-long sandstone gorge carved out 500 million years ago. It's another ideal destination for chasing waterfalls (particularly the cascading Rainbow Falls) and exploring the Adirondacks on its many hiking and adventure trails. It's also a stone's throw from the North Star Underground Railroad Museum , which tells the stories of slaves seeking freedom at the Canadian border, located about an hour north by car.

Dia Beacon , a celebrated collection of contemporary art, brought a lot of attention — and visitors — to this city on the banks of the Hudson River. And with that attention came more appreciation for the many other galleries, shops, cafés, breweries, and antique stores that have taken up residence on its magnetic Main Street. Trek to the top of Mount Beacon or book a boat tour to Pollepel Island (known locally as Bannerman Island), which Native Americans believed was inhabited by haunted, hostile spirits.

About a three-hour drive from New York City, this mountain town welcomes adventurers with its multitude of endorphin-producing activities, including the fastest and longest zip-line canopy tour in North America. There's a charming Main Street in this "gem of the Catskills," with inviting boutiques, bistros, and galleries. In August 2022, the Wylder Windham hotel reopened with a pickleball court, heated pool, and wine tastings every weekend.

Don't write off Buffalo just because of its infamous winter weather. The city continues to evolve as a tourism destination, with the recent restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House , a restored historic carousel on the Buffalo Waterfront, and a big expansion of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (previously known as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery).

Sylvan Beach

Since we're highlighting towns around New York's Finger Lakes, Oneida Lake and the village of Sylvan Beach deserve a shout-out, too. It's a great option for a classic upstate summer vacation, where visitors can spend the day at the town's old-timey amusement park, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, or simply relaxing lakeside with a bottle of local vino. Another way to while away the day is on the water: Rent a cottage at the new Cove at Sylvan Beach, where each rental includes a private pontoon boat.

19 Top-Rated Weekend Getaways in New York State

Written by Shandley McMurray Updated Mar 22, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

New York state is so much more than the famed Big Apple at its core (sorry, we had to). Whether you're a fan of whooshing down a mountain on skis, splashing in a calm lake, or wandering the quiet streets of charming towns, you'll find a slew of wonderful weekend getaways in New York state.

The Empire State is chock-full of fantastic places to recharge and while away a couple of days, no matter what type of break you're looking for. From the magnificent Adirondack and Catskill Mountains to the serene Finger Lakes and beautiful Long Island beaches , you'll be amiss if you don't explore every inch of this spectacular region.

Looking for a destination boasting vibrant nightlife, endless shopping destinations, and entertainment on virtually every corner? New York City won't disappoint. It overflows with excitement, culture, and fine dining. This is the most well-known and highly visited city in the state for a reason!

Not sure where to visit first? Check out our list of the best getaways in New York.

1. New York City

2. niagara falls, 3. hudson valley, 4. lake placid, 5. long island, 6. saratoga springs, 7. catskills, 8. fire island, 9. lake george, 10. finger lakes, 12. syracuse, 13. sag harbor, 14. shelter island, 15. buffalo, 16. kingston, 17. woodstock, 19. greek peak mountain resort, map of weekend getaways in new york state.

Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan

There's no city like New York. This trend-setting utopia has it all – daring design, stunning architecture, an unbeatable arts scene, the world's best musical theater, phenomenal restaurants, and shops selling everything you didn't know you needed but must have!

It's impossible to see everything in a day, despite the fact that this city doesn't officially sleep. Even a long weekend won't be enough to get a real grasp of New York's awesomeness.

If this is your fist trip to the Big Apple, focus your visit on New York's major tourist hot spots : Times Square , the Empire State Building , the Statue of Liberty , Central Park , and Rockefeller Center shouldn't be missed. As for museums, add the Metropolitan Museum of Art , MOMA , Guggenheim , and American Museum of Natural History to the top of your must-see list.

Insider's tip: While a stay at the Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park will provide the most luxurious midtown stay, the Hilton Garden Inn New York/West 35 th Street offers a great location with a more affordable price tag.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is one of the most romantic getaways in New York, making it a must-visit for lovebirds. While you may feel foolish donning the blue plastic poncho given out on the Maid of the Mist , this is the most popular (and longest running) boat tour in the region. You'll be happy for the unfashionable protection as this tour gets you up close and personal with the falls.

Goat Island's Cave of the Winds is one of the most beautiful places to cuddle up. Again, you'll be given a poncho (a yellow one this time), as well as sandals to protect your feet from the water that sprays along the boardwalk from the magnificent falls above.

When you've seen enough water, head to Old Fort Niagara to soak up some history. Then check out these other fun attractions in Niagara Falls before heading to the luxurious, late 1920s English Tudor-style Red Coach Inn Historic Bed and Breakfast Hotel .

Hudson Valley in autumn

It's hard to top a visit to the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. Supercharged with immense natural beauty, this incredible region will heal your soul and help ease any worries. No wonder it's one of the top places to visit on a weekend getaway from New York City.

Breathtaking views await travelers to Hudson Highlands State Park . Award-winning farm-to-table restaurants (like Terrapin Restaurant in Rhinebeck ) beg visitors to tempt their palates with the most delicious organic food.

When it comes time to rest, a stay at the glorious Mohonk Mountain House will help you appreciate much of what the area has to offer – from horseback riding to hiking to swimming to winding down at the spa. It's a bit pricey, but well worth the hefty bill.

Paradox Bay, Lake Placid, with Snowy Whiteface Mountain in the distance

Two-time host of the Winter Olympics (in 1932 and 1980), Lake Placid is the perfect destination for a fun and relaxing long weekend trip. Most visit this area to enjoy its outstanding natural beauty. From the massive, sparkling lake to the magnificent mountains, this lovely village is a magnet for those craving outdoor adventure.

During the summer, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and biking top the list of family-friendly activities. During winter weekend getaways in New York state, visitors can partake in a bevy of well-loved outdoor activities, including skiing, skating, and bobsledding.

The town itself beckons those who crave a small-town feel with a big city amount of services. You'll find spas, art galleries, boutique shops, and eateries ranging from casual cafés to upscale farm-to-table options.

Montauk lighthouse

A famous playground for New York's elite, The Hamptons , Long Island has a lot to offer those whose pockets aren't quite as deep. Looking for a romantic getaway near New York City? You'll find it on one of the South Shore 's vast and pristine golden beaches . Hoping to soak up a bit of history? You can do just that while visiting the iconic Gold Coast mansions.

The fun doesn't stop there. The beautiful hamlet of Montauk presents a perfect weekend trip for big city folks. While here, they can admire the picturesque lighthouse (dating back to 1797) and hike miles of trails or relax seaside on the sandy strand.

Saratoga Spa State Park

There's one big problem with Saratoga Springs : it's so beautiful you won't want to leave. Set serenely in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains , this is one of the loveliest spots for a weekend getaway in upstate New York.

Named after a tranquil, bubbling spring, the town is fairy-tale-like in its setting (we're talking porch swings, colorful gardens, and Victorian homes).

You'll want to get lost in Saratoga Spa State Park . There are plenty of outdoor adventures here – from biking to fishing to golfing to hiking in the summer to skating, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing during winter months.

When it's time to relax, head to the town's Saratoga Mineral Baths for a healing soak in the natural spring.

Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills Mountains

If a trip to the Catskills doesn't inspire your inner artist, we don't know what will. One of the most beautiful mountain regions on the East Coast, the Catskills are renowned for their rugged natural beauty.

In the fall, the foliage bursts onto the scene, caressing the landscape with its vibrant hues of orange, red, and yellow. This breathtaking sight attracts tourists from all over the world to snap photos of their remarkable glow.

Some of the closest mountains to New York City (they're nearly 100 miles away), the Catskill Mountains are the range of choice for weekend warriors hoping for a quick ski fix.

Esopus Creek is a splendid tributary located in the region's northeast. It's a popular spot for fly fishing due to its large population of trout. The Creek is stocked with more than 20,000 brown trout each year.

Not sure where to stay? You'll find plenty of wonderful resorts in the Catskills.

Fire Island lighthouse

This beautiful barrier island lies off the south coast of Long Island. At 9.6 square miles, it's long, skinny, and packed with unbeatable views. What Fire Island lacks is cars. Only emergency and service vehicles are allowed on the isle, which lends even more charm to this already adorable weekend getaway in New York state.

To get to Fire Island, you'll have to board a ferry (or private boat) and leave your car on the mainland. To get around this quiet, traffic- and pollution-free wonderland, you'll have to use your own two legs. Otherwise, you can hop on a bike or a golf cart.

Part of New York's Suffolk County , Fire Island is home to the towns of Islip , Brookhaven , and Babylon , as well as multiple smaller communities – from the popular and vibrant Ocean Beach to the quiet and secluded Lonelyville .

View over Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains

Nestled serenely within the Adirondack Mountains lies glorious Lake George. This monster of a lake is over 32 miles long and three miles wide. At certain points, it reaches 200 feet deep. And each inch of it is magnificent in every season.

Outdoor adventure is the main reason people book a weekend trip to Lake George. They're hoping to swim, SUP, whitewater raft, bike, boat, hike, and fish during the warmer months. During the winter, their goals are to ski, ice skate, sled, or snowshoe.

Lake George is home to indoor adventure as well – from water parks to museums to theaters to spas, there are plenty of options to choose from if you're trying to avoid bad weather or have had enough of being outside.

Finger Lakes, New York

Mother Nature worked hard on the spectacular Finger Lakes . All 9,000 square miles of this natural wonderland are phenomenal. That's likely why it's such a popular place to visit for a romantic getaway in New York.

Dramatic waterfalls will light up your lens and take your breath away. Watkins Glen State Park is not to be missed, especially if you're a fan of watery cascades – it's home to 19 of the best waterfalls in New York state . You'll be so awed by their magical beauty that you'll want to stay longer.

Sign up for a guided tour of the park during summer to be sure you see all the magical nooks and crannies you might miss if exploring on your own.

Kids will love the area, too. Book one of the campsites for a true backwoods adventure.

New York State Capitol, Albany, New York

Four hundred years of history come alive in Albany , the entrancing capital of New York state. Lucky for visitors, many of the old, grand buildings still dominate the skyline, providing an architectural treat to all who wander the city's streets.

Empire State Plaza (a.k.a. Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza) maintains the city's coveted center. A stunning plaza, it's here you'll find the exceptionally beautiful New York State Capitol , which is flanked by perfectly manicured parks (known as the East and West Central Parks ).

The New York State Museum Library & Archives is also here, as is an impressive water feature, which is turned into an ice rink in the winter.

Empire State Plaza is also home to The Egg , an iconic building that looks like a slightly tilted bowl. This unique structure is used as the city's performing arts center, which boasts a commendable lineup of local artists.

Clinton Square, Downtown Syracuse

It's as if Syracuse was created to be a weekend trip destination. Built upon the lovely shores of Onondaga Lake , this pretty town is renowned for its parks, vibrant arts scene, and great food – from pancakes to pizza, you can't go wrong while spending a weekend here.

Historic Armory Square is where you'll find the city's best restaurants and a slew of stores selling everything from jewelry to clothes to chocolate. They're sure to tickle your shopping fancy.

Two museums to add to your list are the Erie Canal Museum (it's more exciting than it sounds, we promise) and the super family-friendly Museum of Science and Technology (MOST).

  • Read More: Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Syracuse, NY

Sag Harbor

A popular destination for long weekend trips, especially during the summer, Sag Harbor is one of the more low-key Hampton villages. Situated in both East Hampton and Southampton , this old whaling village is bordered by the immense displays of wealth (we're talking insanely massive mansions) the Hamptons are known for.

What sweet Sag Harbor lacks, however, is the overt snobbery found in its neighboring towns. Instead, you'll find historic homes peppered throughout town, an adorable Main street with a variety of restaurants, and stores you can (sometimes) afford to shop in.

Set on the lovely Peconic Bay , this is a wonderful place to visit to kick back, relax, and soak up the small-town atmosphere. Weather not cooperating? Visit the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum .

Shelter Island

Sitting at the east end of Long Island, the 8,000-acre Shelter Island is a much quieter, more laid-back version of the Hamptons. It's nestled between the North and South Forks , offering visitors a more rugged, back-to-nature weekend escape.

The fact that Shelter Island is a mere 90 miles east of New York City makes it popular with Manhattanites bent on destressing, so you won't be alone when you visit, especially during the summer.

Hit the beach, grab a bite at one of the local eateries, or visit the Mashomack Nature Preserve , which boasts over 2,000 acres of nature at its best. With tidal creeks, lush woodlands, and freshwater marshes on display, this area has been dubbed the "Jewel of the Peconic Bay."

Downtown Buffalo

A cheap getaway from New York City (at least when compared with the more upscale Hamptons and Long Island), Buffalo is a city with heart and a great vibe. It's also a popular place to stop on the way to (or from) Niagara Falls. A mere 15 miles from the Falls, Buffalo offers great places to stay, a slew of fine restaurants, and a wide selection of shops.

In addition to its lush parks (a series of which were developed by Central Park's lead designer, Frederick Law Olmstead), Buffalo also boasts the famed Darwin Martin House (of Frank Lloyd Wright fame) and the wonderful Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens .

The downtown core is where you'll find most of the shops and restaurants. This is also where you'll find Canalside , Buffalo's beautiful waterfront, which offers public ice-skating, curling, ice bumper cars, and ice bicycles throughout the winter months.

During summer, this is the place to admire the water views from an Adirondack chair, catch live music at an outdoor concert, or take a long, romantic stroll along the boardwalk.

Colorful buildings in Uptown Kingston

Kingston is a charming waterfront city with deep historic roots. Set just outside the Catskills, this unassuming town is literally as pretty as a postcard and offers a slew of fun things to do on a weekend away. Save your visit for summer if you're hoping to enjoy the best the city has to offer. We're talking live music, festivals, and other fun events.

Uptown is where you'll find the most action. This vibrant area offers boutique stores, colorful murals, historic buildings, adorable cafés, museums, and restaurants galore. Don't miss the Stockade Historic District and its blue stone sidewalks.

Downtown is the place to be if you're drawn to the water. Also known as the Rondout National Historic District , you can board boat tours, eat alfresco on an outdoor restaurant patio, visit the Hudson River Maritime Museum , or wander the path along the pretty waterfront.

Ashokan Reservoir in Upstate New York

While most associate Woodstock with the famous music festival that promoted peace, love, and all things hippie, the world-renowned concert took place in Bethel , just a short drive away. Quaint Woodstock lies quietly in the heart of the Catskills, art and music making up much of its allure, and a stunning natural backdrop begging visitors to get outside and explore.

It's so pretty that taking in the scenery is one of the top things to do in Woodstock . Explore the 700,000 acres of the wild and wonderful Catskill Park , bike around the Ashokan Reservoir , or head out fishing on Esopus Creek .

If the weather's less than stellar, you can spend your time inside, enjoying the shops and cafés of Tinker Street , admiring the colorful works in Woodstock Artists Association and Museum , or catching a performance in the Woodstock Playhouse .

Beacon, New York

Beacon is a small but vibrant gem set in the south of the Hudson Valley, just seven miles north of Cold Spring. Easily reached by train from New York City, this is a popular place to spend a weekend getaway in New York State, especially for art lovers.

While here, visitors can enjoy the riverside views, hike the area's long and winding nature trails, or practice a little retail therapy in the eclectic shops.

Those who gravitate towards creative endeavors will find Hudson Beach Glass particularly endearing. This fun store also contains a glassblowing demonstration studio, so visitors can watch the artists craft their creations while they shop.

One of the most popular things to do in Beacon is visit the impressive Dia:Beacon , which features a variety of works from the 1960s to the present day. It's impossible to leave here without being inspired to craft something of your own.

Those who prefer to spend their time in the fresh air will want to hit the small six-acre Pollepel Island , which lies near the train station. This plays host to the dramatic ruins of Bannerman Castle , as well as being a perfect spot to enjoy captivating views of the river and surrounding countryside.

Greek Peak Mountain Resort

Greek Peak Mountain Resort is big enough to entertain the whole family but small enough to check all the fun activities off your to-do list in a weekend. Depending on the weather, guests have a variety of fun things to choose from at this four-season Finger Lakes resort.

In the winter, guests can enjoy the ski resort's six chair lifts and 56 trails, as well as the terrain parks. The Outdoor Adventure Center is where non-winter visitors will spend most of their time. This is home to the Mountain Coaster , a high ropes Aerial Challenge Course , a zipline tour , and a Eurobungy attraction, as well as an outdoor cinema.

Across the street lies Hope Lake Lodge , a fantastic spot to spend the night in a cozy, cabin-like room. This is also where you'll find the Cascades Water Park , which features waterslides, a wave pool, an indoor-outdoor hot tub, multiple pools, and a splash playground for kids. We promise, you won't hear the words "I'm bored" escape your kids' mouths at this non-stop fun spot.

Everyone knows that once you live in NYC, you love it, but you’re also looking for your next escape to leave the city for some breathing room. And if you’re traveling in NYC, maybe you heard that there are SO many places to visit for a day trip, not too far away!

My definition of a day trip is “under 2 hours of travel,” so this list features places that aren’t too far from NYC or anywhere in the area.

This list features some of my favorite easy and doable day trips, including small towns, beaches, hiking areas, cultural points of interest and historic sites. These day trip ideas are in Upstate NY, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

I hope you enjoy this list, which features day trips I’ve taken through the years and some hidden gems for getaways from the city.

NYC day trips to Upstate NY

When New Yorkers or visitors think of “day trip ideas from NYC,” most think of “Upstate New York. It’s an obvious choice for any of the northbound train lines, bus routes or highways.

Upstate New York is a vast region that stretches all the way to Canada. As for my “day trip” ideas, we’ll be sticking to any locations at less than a two-hour drive from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

If you find a flight to Upstate NY for your trip and you plan on sticking around the region, consider the upstate Stewart Airport, which we detail in our guide to how to pick the best NYC airport to fly into .

It doesn’t matter which time of year you’re visiting NYC because Upstate NY offers special experiences throughout every season.

Beacon! Beacon surged in popularity in the 2000s and has become a destination of its own for day trippers, weekenders and road trippers. Best of all, Beacon is a town in the Hudson Valley that is conveniently located on Metro North, and it’s also a 1.5-hour easy drive from NYC.

What’s there to do in Beacon, NY, for a day trip? We outline this in our Beacon weekend travel guide . You can see art at dia:Beacon, a fun and vibrant food and bar scene, views of the sunset on the Hudson River and nearby hikes at the Beacon Fire Tower trail.

Poughkeepsie is a Hudson Valley town that would be a stretch for a day trip, but once you get there, there are lots of attractions that can fill up a day if you leave NYC early and come back late. You’ll also feel like you really got away! It’s about 1 hour and 40 min by driving, to NYC.

The main attraction in Poughkeepsie is the Walkway Over the Hudson, an elevated pedestrian-only bridge that is actually a New York State Park. This long bridge has panoramic views of the Hudson River, and when you finish your walk, stop by any of Poughkeepsie’s Mexican restaurants for a bite.

A hilltop building in NYC overlooking a body of water.

New Paltz is a ‘crunchy’ and sort of hippie-dippie town in the Hudson Valley on the west side of the Hudson River, known for the NY State University of New Paltz (SUNY New Paltz) and a small-town vibe.

The town is very walkable, with food offerings like breweries, a smattering of cafes and Vietnamese food. There are also some historic locations from 18th century Huguenot settlers. To drive from NYC, it’s about 90 minutes flat.

Cold Spring

Cold Spring is a charming pastel Hudson Valley town with a walkable downtown, Hudson River views at a riverside park and a slew of antique shops for some proper antiquing. If you walk down the side streets, you’ll see charming restored historic homes.

Cold Spring is indeed quite small, and so you can explore the entire town and nearby hikes, if you have a car. If you wish to come by train, simply take MetroNorth from Grand Central Station or from Harlem, to the Cold Spring station. The drive is less than 1 hour and 20 min from NYC.

Storm King Art Center

Storm King has for many years been a big bucket list item for New Yorkers, and for good reasons! Storm King is located not too far outside the city, with the closest actual town being New Windsor, NY. Check out the Storm King webste to plan your trip.

Storm King is a 500-acre open-air sculpture and art park, where visitors can roam around, take photos, enjoy the greenery or foliage (in fall) and enjoy on-site bike rentals and the cafe. It’s a great spot for a photo op with friends and family. Storm King will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes driving from NYC.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Clocking in at just under two hours via driving from Brooklyn and Manhattan, the Minnewaska State Park Preserve is a lovely natural destination in the very lower tip of the Catskill Mountains . It’s a favorite day trip destination for New Yorkers due to being easily driveable and back, in a single day.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve has 25 miles of hiking trails alone, and is best known for waterfalls, cliff views and wildlife and birding. You’ll surely get your fill of nature here, and you can go back to the urban jungle to sleep at night. Keep in mind that it’s a 1 hour 50 minute drive from NYC.

When visiting nature preserves remember to be a sustainable traveler by following our favorite eco-friendly travel tips like bringing your own reusable snack containers and leaving no trace of your waste.

Clarence Fahnestock State Park

We found ourselves in Clarence Fahnestock State Park during a trip up to Fishkill, Garrison and Cold Spring one summer, and it was a pleasant state park stop on a trip when we otherwise saw lots of river views and small towns. The drive should be about 1 hour and 15 min from NYC!

If you mention this long-winded park name to anyone, they probably will never have heard of it, and that’s the nice part about it. Clarence Fahnestock State Park is by no means a bucket list item, but you will find yourself in acres and acres of green forest, where there’s also lakes with small beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and fishing areas.

Bear Mountain State Park

Bear Mountain State Park is one of the most famous hiking destination day trips from NYC, and it’s a spectacular place to visit for a day from spring to autumn (in fact, my parents just went to Bear Mountain as a day trip from Northern NJ).

Bear Mountain is located on the west side of the Hudson, not too far up in Rockland County, NY, which is across the river from Westchester County. Driving to Bear Mountain from Brooklyn or Manhattan would take you a dab over an hour with no traffic!

If you do visit in winter, you can do activities like cross-country skiing, sledding and ice skating, all within the Bear Mountain State Park areas. For the drive, budget about 1 hour and 20 min from NYC (with no traffic).

Harriman State Park

Harriman State Park, if driven with no traffic, could potentially take you even less than one hour if coming from within NYC. It’s a state park located in Rockland County, and it is known for beautiful wildlife, with 22 miles of hiking trails, along with horseback trails and biking trails.

A map of NYC is displayed on a wooden door.

Here’s a secret: it’s the second-largest state park in all of New York State, and that’s your factoid of the day. The only larger state park is the Adirondack Park up north, near Canada.

Our best tip for day trippers to Harriman State Park is to bring your own food and lots of water, as there aren’t many accessible stores, even as you exit, for at least a few miles. Also, bring sunscreen and hats, as the starts of some hikes are full of sun without shade.

Dater Mountain Nature Park

We bet you’ve never heard of Dater Mountain Nature Park, unless you’re from Rockland County or northern NJ. Dater Mountain Nature Park is located near Ramapo, and Sloatsburg, NY, and believe it or not, this natural area is home to 31 lakes and beaches, with hiking for all skill levels.

At just a dab over an hour’s drive from NYC, it is a great idea for a day trip if you wish to get into nature and get your hiking boots worn in.

Day trip ideas for New Jersey

Don’t roll your eyes at the mention of New Jersey, because there’s more to the Garden State than I-95 and Newark Airport. If you’d like to be pleasantly surprised by all the day trips from NYC to New Jersey, read this list and then you’ll believe we told ya so.

At a little over an hour’s drive from NYC, Princeton, NJ, is a destination in central New Jersey where you can visit the famed Princeton University, the campus of which is a striking place to walk around, take photos and admire architecture.

Princeton itself is a charming town with a walkable downtown, including bars, restaurants, shopping and historic sites. Princeton also has a train station on New Jersey Transit (NJT) train lines, and Amtrak.

Maplewood is a cool northern NJ town easily accessible both on NJ Transit trains and via car from NYC. It has a small city vibe with an array of restaurants, places to eat and small shops, and easily-accessible natural surroundings you can visit with a car, such as South Mountain Reservation (for hiking) and the South Mountain Fairy Trail.

Maplewood is known for being a town where families from NYC move to raise children. Here, you’ll find a ton of familiy-friendly restaurants, as everyone dines out with their babies, toddlers and kids. The downtown area and the pretty Memorial Park are right next to the train station.

I recommend Maplewood as an easy day trip to see an NJ suburb if you are looking for how to plan a trip to NYC with a baby , especially.

Montclair is a trendy and happenin’ northern NJ town also easily accessible most directly via its several stations on the NJ Transit train lines, which will connect you directly from NY Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan with this small New Jersey City.

Montclair has a state university (Montclair State) and has long been known for cool cafes, several bars, a nice food scene, shopping and the Montclair Art Museum.

You can see more about Jersey City, especially if you’re a runner looking for scenic views, in our NYC best running routes guide .

Fort Lee, NJ, is a more urban-style NJ small city right over the George Washington Bridge from Washington Heights in Manhattan. This being said, you could walk there from Manhattan, if you wanted to. Otherwise, it’s easy to take a bus to Fort Lee, or you can take a quick drive.

In terms of what to do in Fort Lee, NJ on a day trip, the first idea is “eat Asian food.” Fort Lee has one of the larger East Asian populations in all of NJ, making it a destination for Korean food. In fact, there’s so much Korean food in Fort Lee it’s actually overwhelming. We’ll let you choose your favorite place for Korean BBQ and gamjantang .

Hoboken is NJ’s square-mile city, and it’s famous for being the home of Frank Sinatra. This being said, Hoboken is a stone’s throw from Manhattan, and you can get there super quickly on the PATH train. No car is needed!

Once you get to Hoboken for your day trip, it’s nice to walk around the cute downtown and see the restaurants and bars.

Once you’ve eaten and had something to drink, head to the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, the can’t-miss piers and waterfront park where you’ll see clear shots of Manhattan and the NYC skyline. If you’re lucky, you may catch some live music, too.

A scenic view of the NYC skyline from the water.

Jersey City

Jersey City is actually quite big, and that is what makes it a good day trip from NYC. In Jersey City alone, there are three PATH stations, with the one we’d suggest getting off at being Grove Street.

Jersey City has its own food scene (try all the Latino food!), bar scene and shopping, along with some very pretty streets with historic brick row houses. Among attractions are Liberty State Park, the Empty Sky Memorial and the Waterfront 9/11 Memorial.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Ellis Island is closer to Jersey City, NJ, than it is to New York?

A view of the NYC skyline at night.

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

Maybe you have heard of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and maybe you haven’t, but did you know it was the first federal wildlife area in the US? Wild!

It is now part of the United States National Wildlife Refuge System, and it is located about an hour and a quarter from NYC (probably less, if coming from Manhattan near the tunnels). The Great Swamp is located near Berkeley Heights, NJ, which makes it only 26 miles from Times Square, and perfect for a day trip or half-day trip from NYC.

Did you know that you can walk on boardwalks on the 7,768 acres of this New Jersey oasis? It’ll keep your boots dry if it’s muddy.

Our day trip to the Great Swamp during peak foliage season was quiet and peaceful. For some reason, the main Observation Center was closed for parking, so we found parking at the north end of Long Hill Road and basically had the trails to ourselves on an autumn weekend afternoon. Here’s the website , where you can learn more.

A woman using binoculars in the woods near New York City.

Watchung Reservation

Our favorite hiking trail at Watchung Reservation is the Surprise Lake trail , which takes you around a relaxing lake. The trail itself is rather flat, after a downhill from the parking area (which has pleasantly clean bathrooms!).

We recommend going in the fall for peak foliage season, as the colors of the trees were a real treat.

A woman is holding up a leaf in the woods of New York.

Watchung Reservation is located in Mountainside, NJ, 25 miles from the center of Manhattan, so it would be a 35-40 minute drive with no traffic. We wouldn’t really recommend taking the train and then Ubering because it would be difficulty to get picked up on your return trip, but if you knew someone nearby, the nearest train would be Westfield station or Summit station.

South Mountain Reservation

South Mountain , as we lovingly refer to it, is one of our favorite “right in our backyard” hiking areas. You even don’t need a car to access the southern “Fairy Trail” and “Locust Grove” start points, as they’re a stone’s throw of walking distance from the Millburn Train station on NJ Transit.

New York City (NYC) South Mountain Recreation Trail Map.

Truly, this may be the best hiking option for NYC day trippers who don’t have a car, as the Locust Grove parking lot, which has four trailheads, is a three-minute stroll from when you get off your train.

Local expert tip: If you choose to spend some time walking around Millburn, eat at the locally-famous Millburn Deli (328 Millburn Ave, Millburn, NJ 07041).

The Fairy Trail is a kid-friendly mostly-flat local favorite that features small handmade birdhouse-sizes “fairy houses” with tiny figurines. Children love this hike, as it’s peaceful and easy, and also pretty short.

South Mountain Reservation is also accessible from other entrances in South Orange, NJ. If you’re looking for a stroller-friendly hike, check out Crest Drive, a mile-long paved pedestrian-only road originating from the Dog Park. It leads to Washington’s Point, which has some lookouts to the surrounding area. Here is more info, like directions and a visual, on All Trails .

Asbury Park

Asbury Park, NJ, has SO much to do for a day trip from NYC, and can be fun at any time of year!

This coastal New Jersey town will take you an hour and 20 minutes or less if coming from Brooklyn, and if you time your trip right from Penn Station in Manhattan, your NJ Transit ride direct to Asbury Park’s NJT train station would be one hour and 51 minutes, thereby putting it at the under-two-hours mark for mass transit transport.

Asbury Park has a heap of things to do for day trippers and families. In the summer, there’s the beach and the beachfront boardwalk on the Atlantic Ocean, and if the weather is inclement or if you’re coming in spring or fall, check out the vintage shops, restaurants, arcades, casinos and live music venues, which often host concerts and festivals.

For history buffs or gamers, make sure to stop at the Silverball Museum Arcade, which has pinball machines from the 1950s.

Getting to Red Bank, NJ, takes only an hour and 19 minutes from Penn Station, so there are really no excuses to not try a day trip there this year from NYC. If driving from Brooklyn or other parts of Manhattan, you’re looking at a trip not to exceed an hour and 10 minutes (without traffic).

What is Red Bank like for a visit and a day trip? Well, it’s not exactly a beach town, so really, what can you do there? The draw of Red Bank is its great performing arts scene, along with it’s “visual art scene,” which is great for art lovers and fans of gallery culture. Check out fine art galleries, theaters, street art and murals, all in Red Bank’s downtown, before you hit a bistro for sushi and a beer garden for a drink.

Wawayanda State Park

Turning gears to shift to the north, try saying Wawayanda State Park three times fast. It may be quicker to just get in your car or rented vehicle to drive only between an hour and 15 min or an hour and 40 minutes, depending if you are driving from Manhattan or Brooklyn, to get to this state forest at the NJ-NY northern border.

What’s the draw of Wawayanda State Park, besides that its name is super amusing to say? Well, among its whopping 34,350 acres of land and abundance of hiking trails through forest, it hosts 20 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and the top of Wawayanda Mountain has some fantastic views for those who summit.

Try boating, kayaking, fishing, sailing and swimming in warm spring and summer months, along with early fall, in Lake Wawayanda and see the website here .

Day trip ideas for Long Island

Long Island may seem like an obvious choice for day trippers from Queens and Brooklyn, along with anyone coming from Manhattan who has access to the LIRR train lines at Penn Station, or a car of their own.

What’s there to love about Long Island? Probably the fact that the water is never far away, and despite the essential beaches in Long Island that are close enough to the city for day trips, there are some hidden gems, too.

Long Beach is a long-favorited beach day trip for New York City dwellers.

To get to Long Beach from Manhattan, you’re much better off taking the LIRR train from Penn Station, as it will run you about an hour and 35 minutes in total, while taking LIRR from points in Brooklyn such as the Atlantic Ave. terminal or Nostrand Ave. terminal will only take an hour and 22 minutes at best.

Driving would be shorter, between one hour and one hour and 15 minutes, sans traffic.

Long Beach has quite literally, a rather long beach, along with a beach town that’ll slow down your pace of walking and get you a drink in hand at any of the bars, restaurants and pubs in the “State Streets” neighborhood (the streets that have states as names).

This part of town looks like the set of a movie about a beach town, with close-together houses that are home to locals and able to be rented out for a weekend. Head out to Long Beach Boardwalk for stopping at RIPTIDES 11561 and Marvel Frozen Dairy for ice cream.

A beach in NYC with grass and clouds under a blue sky.

Jones Beach

Jones Beach is where my parents took me as a kid, for day trips when we lived in Queens.

Jones Beach is a NY State Park, located on an island in the outer barrier islands of Long Island. That’s a lot of islands.

To get to Jones Beach for a day trip, drive from central Brooklyn for only one hour and 6 minutes, or consider that it will be about an hour and 15 minutes by car, from Midtown Manhattan. There is no public transport that would get you to Jones Beach effectively, so I won’t recommend any.

Once at Jones Beach, take photos of the beach and boardwalk, get your suntan on and go for a swim, and definitely check into the music concert schedule because there are some big bands and famous names that do concerts at Jones Beach Theater.

Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve

This NY State Park in Lloyd Harbor, NY, is a bit of a different day trip and one you may not expect. Located only an hour and a half from Times Square and midtown Manhattan, this Long Island English-style estate has nature trails and opportunities to learn about the history of this park on a scenic peninsula.

You can learn about the park preserve here at the website , and more about the Henry Lloyd Manor House, here .

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site

Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt on Long Island, and now it is protected by the National Park Service, thereby making it a US National Park! You can verify that on the website, here . It is located near Oyster Bay, NY, and could be a trip of only 45 minutes (at minimum) with no traffic, coming from various central points in New York City.

The park is 83 acres and includes natural areas and historic buildings. The historic site encompasses the life and story of this famous US president, and his family, until his death in 1919. Plan your visit with this helpful information at NPS.gov .

Day trip ideas to Philly or PA

You might not consider that the state of Pennsylvania is day-trippable from NYC, but it’s true: if you take the Amtrak to Philly (and cut traffic out of your disturbances), you could be in Philadelphia’s downtown in 1.5 hours if you leave from NY Penn Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan.

Philadelphia: where do we start? Philly is ironically so close yet so far, making it a funny little idea of a day trip from NYC. When you go to Philly, make sure to visit Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and Rittenhouse Square, and then do some favors for yourself by avoiding the tourists and going local, to check out neighborhoods like Fishtown, Northern Liberties and South Street.

A row of houses with shutters on the front door.

For a visit to New Hope, you will need a car, but that should not stop you from going. New Hope is a charming Delaware River village with funky shopping, a restaurant and dining scene of its own, a theater and cultural landmarks, all in a 1.5-hour drive from NYC (even from Brooklyn), if you do not hit traffic.

Among the best things to do in New Hope, PA, for a day trip from NYC are checking out the orchards, the Delaware Canal, Parry Mansion and the New Hope Railroad.

Day trip ideas to Connecticut

Don’t forget about Connecticut as a state you can travel to on a day trip from NYC this year. Parts of Southern Connecticut are closer to NYC proper than many parts of Upstate NY and New Jersey, without question. Where can you go for a day trip from NYC, in Connecticut?

Do you have slightly more time on your hands than a single day? Consider a trip up to Litchfield County in northwestern Connecticut, for staying a night and experiencing the region!

Norwalk is a nice small city located off the Metro North train line, which you can hop on from Grand Central Station in Manhattan. Why go to Norwalk for a day? You can go to sights like the Sheffield Island Lighthouse, Lockwood-Matthews Mansion House, and Calf Pasture Beach, ending your day with any of the restaurants and bars like Match, Herb’s Place, Pontos Taverna and Pasquale’s Osteria.

Driving to Norwalk, CT, from a central point like Times Square will only take a few minutes over an hour without traffic, and on the train, travel just one hour and 16 minutes with a Metro North train trip.

Stamford is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after small cities in the US, so let’s see why. With a day trip to Stamford, you can see “small city” life in this NY Metro Area suburb that is actually a city of its own in Connecticut. With sights to see like the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, Cove Island Park, and the Bartlett Arboretum, you can do so much with a day trip to Stamford.

When you’re ready to wind down and see the food and drink scene in Stamford, check out Half Full Brewery, Lock City Brewing Company, Taj and Olio.

Getting to Stamford will take an hour and 30 minutes on the New Haven line of Metro North, or, less than an hour by car (if coming from most points in Manhattan).

Greenwich, CT, is one of the most beautiful towns in America, in my opinion, and it is great for a day trip to a quaint upscale town with a location on the Long Island Sound and a pristine downtown area.

It’s easy to spend a day trip in the immediate area of Greenwich’s town, doing some shopping and restaurant-visiting, and its nearby attractions, such as the Greenwich Point Park, Greenwich Audubon Center, and Great Captain’s Island & Little Captain’s Island.

To get to Greenwich, take the New Haven Metro North Line for only an hour and 10 minutes or so, and you can also drive from Manhattan or Brooklyn, which would be between 55 and 70 minutes without traffic.

Mianus River Park

Mianus River Park is a natural park area in Fairfield County, CT, and to drive there, it’ll take around an hour from Manhattan and less than 1h20m from Brooklyn, depending where. It’s located only 40 miles from Midtown Manhattan, so it’s the perfect distance for a single-day getaway.

Mianus River Park is described as a deciduous forest of hardwood trees and varied flora and fauna, and is a nice stop on a day trip to one of the small southern Connecticut towns above, or a trip of its own, as you can see the 4.9-mile trail to hike on the popular hiking website AllTrails . It is open from sunrise to sunset, and did you know that the wetlands breed salamanders and frogs? Also, watch out for snakes! (not a joke)

Did you make it through this list? Now you’re armed with places to go for day trips and side trips, which are some crucial parts of what to know before traveling to NYC .

We hope you enjoyed this list of the best unique and fun day trips to take from NYC this year, whether by car, train, bus, bike or rental car. Never stop day tripping!

Top day trips from NYC

Woodstock, NY

1.  Woodstock, NY

Good for hippies at heart 2 hrs, 11mins by car

Though the name conjures a crowd splashed in tie-dye and the faint scent of marijuana, Woodstock isn’t actually where the 1969 festival was held. (That was in Bethel, about two hours away.) Even so, the town is a mix of retired hippies—a street there is named after the late great Band member Levon Helm—artists and city dwellers who feel the need to flee the metropolis on weekends. Woodstock the chance to connect with nature thanks to Overlook Mountain and its various trails as well as a healthy shopping scene with quaint local shops like Candlestock and the Golden Notebook and its weekend flea market, delicious food that can be found at places like Silvia and The Mud Cub and drinks at Station Bar & Curio .

Beacon, NY

2.  Beacon, NY

Good for small town fans 1hr 20mins by Metro-North

This quaint city in Dutchess County boasts an exceptionally good eating, drinking and art scene for its size. Walk five minutes from the train station to Dia:Beacon , a modern art museum housed in a former Nabisco box factory. If you’d rather spend the day sampling some booze,  Dennings Point Distillery on Main Street also offers tours and tastings of their bourbon, whiskey, gin and vodka every Friday and Saturday. Before you board the train back to the city, spend a few quiet minutes watching the sun set over the Hudson at Long Dock Park.

Kingston, NY

3.  Kingston, NY

Good for townies, thrifters and history buffs. 1 hr 50 mins by car

Once a sleepy town, the city of Kingston is experiencing a reawakening with more residents moving in these days. Dating back to the arrival of the Dutch in 1652, Kingston has a rich history as the state's first capital. During the Revolutionary War, it was burned by the British and in the 19th century, it became a transportation hub, situated right on the Hudson. Despite the fire, you can still see the gorgeous First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston, which was organized in 1659, and many 17th century stone buildings, including the Senate House, which was built in the 1670s. The city is divided into different sections: Uptown, which includes the historic Stockade area; midtown, which is bisected by Broadway, the city’s main drag; and Rondout, near the creek and river, to the south, according to the New York Times . A handful of trendy stores and unique hangouts like Rough Draft , a bookstore and taproom, have opened recently as well as a number of restaurants slinging delicious food like Ship to Shore and Lola . The Ulster Performing Arts Center , inside a restored 1926 theater, regularly has events and the city is also home to a number of festivals, including the Kingston Jazz Festival and the Artists Soapbox Derby. The Trolley Museum of New York even offers 1.5-mile ride on weekends and holidays along the Rondout Creek waterfront to Kingston Point Park.

4.  Mohonk Preserve, NY

Good for hikers and nature enthusiasts 2 hrs by car

Make sure to start your day early to make a full day of it.

New Paltz, NY

5.  New Paltz, NY

Good for those who want a mix of town and country 3hrs by LIRR or car

Beyond all the worth-the-trip views of riverside bluffs and verdant trees, New Paltz is the most historic on this list, with preserved houses that were around 100 years before we even became the U.S. of A. So, yeah. Pretty old. Learn about the lives of the 17th-century   Huguenot settlers , as performers (dolled up in duds from the period) take you through 30 buildings over 10 acres, including seven historic homes and a reconstructed 1717 church. (Want to retain the back-to-basics spirit as you take in the National Historic Landmark District? Leave the selfie stick at home.)

Phoenicia, NY

6.  Phoenicia, NY

Good for everyone 2 hrs 50mins by car

Tucked into the Catskills, this Ulster County hamlet is a real melting pot, the kind of place where you can expect to see a conservative old-timer and a Brooklyn lumbersexual sipping Buds along the bar in perfect harmony. For every no-nonsense staple ( Phoenicia Diner ), there’s a hipster newbie ( the Graham & Co. ). Try Peekamoose if you want to be trendy—the restaurant is known as the “Gramercy of the Catskills.” If you’re looking to do something unique, float down the creek’s rapids—one of the most popular things to do in Phoenicia—or  hike at  Giant Ledge . The mellow, no-frills, hippie-dippie local culture makes it easy for anyone to relax here.

Visitors can even climb inside a select number of the works. The artistic flair extends to the riverfront village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, where you can dine at the eclectic restaurant–art gallery combo Painter’s .

Kerhonkson, NY

8.  Kerhonkson, NY

Good for hikers 2hrs by car

Between its rugged landscape and forested pine-barrens area, upstate has some stellar natural spots, and Minnewaska State Park Preserve is one of the best. The more than 22,000-acre spread has been converted into an egalitarian playground with 50 miles of trails, a new rock-climbing spot at the Dickie Barre cliffs, as well as old carriage roads well suited for mountain biking. Cool off with a swim in Lake Minnewaska or Lake Awosting, nestled between towering white bluffs and known for their translucent aquamarine color. Afterward, head to New Paltz for a break at the Water Street Market , where you can eat, shop, and take in art, outdoor movies on Monday nights (June–Aug) and free music on Tuesdays. Historic Huguenot Street is also worth a gander; the road features seven 300-year-old stone houses from the original settlement and provides a tangible glimpse at the history of the town.

Cold Spring, NY

9.  Cold Spring, NY

The Hudson Highlands have lush landscapes, peaks and breathtaking hikes for all levels. Explore old ruins, including a crumbled mansion and defunct dairy farm, on the gradually sloping, partially unpaved Cornish Estate Trail, which starts opposite Little Stony Point Loop, marked by blue blazes. While there’s plenty of shopping and dining to be done in town, the adventurous should tackle the steep climbs and rock scrambles that lead to the summit of Breakneck Ridge for an impressive 360-degree vista of Storm King Mountain, Bannerman Castle and, on clear days, the Catskills. For detailed guidebooks and maps, check out New York–New Jersey Trail Conference , Open Space Institute and Appalachian Mountain Club , and bring water and appropriate footwear, even for the simpler treks.

Take a five-minute cab ride from the station to Philipsburg Manor Upper Mills living-history museum —a farm and mill dating back to 1750—to try hands-on activities. Staffers in period costume demonstrate grinding grain in the gristmill, threshing wheat and preparing goods for shipping with traditional instruments. The visit also provides a sobering reminder that slavery was not confined to the South, which guided tours highlight. Explore the dairy, kitchens and bed chambers in the main house, then bask in the rustic scenery from the bridge overlooking the pond. Take the 15-minute walk to the Bridge View Tavern for craft brews, pub grub, and views of the bridge and stretch of the Hudson River known as the Tappan Zee.

Warwick, NY

11.  Warwick, NY

It's a great getaway for those who want to go leaf-peeping and pumpkin picking but also want to check out the local town nightlife and its plethora of restaurants. The best part? It's near to some of New York's most incredible gorges and waterfalls. They don't say "Ithaca is gorges" for nothin'!

Fire Island, L.I.

13.  Fire Island, L.I.

Good for sunseekers 1hr 30mins by LIRR and ferry

Once a haven for nude sunbathers, Fire Island’s federally managed beaches have made clothing very much mandatory since 2013. There’s still plenty of fun to be had on the 31-mile barrier island, including lifeguard-supervised, all-ages swimming on Sailors Haven, Watch Hill, Davis Park and Atlantique. Nature lovers might want to walk along the elevated boardwalk at Sunken Forest Preserve , a rare maritime ecosystem growing in the low spot between two sand dunes. Holly trees, sassafras, black cherry and prickly cat-briar all grow together in a tangle of vegetation. Staying through the evening? The bar scenes in Ocean Beach and Kismet draw crowds of attractive young professionals, while Cherry Grove and the Pines thrive with vibrant LGBTQ communities.

Good for the townies at heart 3hrs by LIRR or car

While you're there, you'll want to stop at Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market  for some beer and oysters, peruse vintage finds at The Times Vintage , and stop for ice cream at Sandpiper Coffee and Ice Cream Shop . Rent a board—fiberglass, foam or epoxy—and a wet suit from the family-owned Air and Speed Surf Shop . Drive your gear to Ditch Plains Beach for a lesson with local fixture and professional instructor Corey Senese . Towel off and refuel at Ditch Witch, a beloved food truck slinging breakfast burritos, addictive Asian sesame noodles and Zen Blend iced green tea. A few steps off South Street (but still not far from a cheesesteak) is Heres2CoolStuff , acclaimed for its colorful and inexpensive collection of men's and women’s apparel. For dapper gentlemen, Briar boasts a meticulously edited collection of classic Americana style, including tailored sport coats, varsity jackets and military boots alongside sartorial accessories (bowties, cufflinks, hats) and oddities for the curious collector. Don’t leave without hitting up what just might be every Macklemore fan’s fantasy come true: Bulk Vintage , a warehouse for hunters who don’t mind digging—literally—for retro duds sold at wholesale prices that rival any thrift shop north of Jersey. If you can’t make the public opening hours, make an appointment to rummage.

Short Hills, NJ

18.  Short Hills, NJ

Good for escape artists 45mins by car

Nudged up against the South Mountain Reservation, Greenwood Gardens  (which opens May 1, 2021) presents a tranquil, isolated escape. The grounds have been around since the early 1900s, but not until April 2013, following several years of renovation, did they open to the public. Begin at the orientation center, a redbrick revival Georgian manor, and proceed to a formal Italianate garden marked by stone terraces and wooden pergolas. Follow stone paths to the rustic Arts and Crafts–style cottages, then wind your way to the three-foot-tall limestone chess pieces lining the steps to the teahouse. Seek out the summerhouse on your own and admire the resident swans, chickens and goats, or join a guide on a 45-minute walking tour.

The park’s indoor gallery at Seward Johnson has four exhibits, including two site-specific glass installations by sculptor Daniel Clayman. End your day with upscale local cuisine at on-site restaurant Rat’s . Nibble on the mussels mouclade and the charcuterie platter, or sip a cocktail during happy hour. New Canaan, CT

21.  New Canaan, CT

Curious visitors can explore the property by buying a timed ticket to for the one-hour, two-hour or three-hour tour. The Silvermine River runs through the heart of the village. If you want more architecture, visit the modern and aptly named Philip Johnson Glass House.

The Palisades, NJ

23.  The Palisades, NJ

Throw on your best Lululemon gear and head to the next state over for a cycling jaunt. If you don’t have your own set of wheels, stop by Tread Bike Shop ; rentals include helmets, and the friendly staff supplies sage advice for newbies. Set off and make your way through the hilly, neighborhood streets of Inwood and follow signs for the George Washington Bridge. Take in panoramic views of Manhattan while gliding over the Hudson via the bridge’s cyclist-and-pedestrian-only path. Veer left to stay on Henry Hudson Drive, the Palisades’ main bike path, which will take you along mountain roads past rustling trees and views of the water. Once you get your back on dry land, feast on seafood at Lucky Bones Backwater Grille , a local restaurant named for the hooklike claw found on male horseshoe crabs that superstitious sailors used to wear for a safe return. Continue your day with a friendly game of putt-putt at Cape May Miniature Golf . The annual Atlantic City Airshow provides an opportunity to sprawl on the beach while watching vintage planes take stomach-dropping nosedives over the ocean. After an afternoon of sunning yourself on the sand, sample the old-fashioned saltwater taffy at Fralinger’s on the boardwalk. The historic family-run business has been making the candy since 1884. How to Get Around

Really the only good way to get around New York is by car. If you are flying into New York, without your own car, you will need to rent a car at the airport. I suggest flying in and out of New York City’s airports because there are more connections.

But if you’re not coming from far, you might choose to skip New York City and start somewhere like Buffalo or Albany.

Be Prepared For Travel Planning is the most important part of any successful trip. Do it the easy way:

Seven Days in New York Itinerary

When preparing a perfect New York itinerary, you’ll want to consider the types of things you most want to see and do. Since there are so many different activities – from big city to rural backwoods – you’ll probably need to narrow it down a bit.

I think that 9 days is the ideal amount of time to see and explore the best bits of this glorious state. So our one week in New York itinerary will take you through the state’s lake, river, and mountain regions in what will likely feel like a whirlwind trip.

You can always remove any bits and pieces you aren’t keen on and add any that you feel are missing, to make it your own.

Map of the Trip

Day 1 & 2: New York City

Manhattan brown buildings and cityspace

Known as the “Big Apple”, New York City is perhaps one of the most famous cities in the world. It’s a melting pot for business, the arts, and luxury shopping. That’s why we recommend starting your itinerary in the city.

Not only will you likely be flying into one of New York City’s airports to start your trip, it’s a great place to rent a car , and it’s the most active part of the trip, which is always best done first.

Here are a few spots you should consider exploring while in New York City.

  • Manhattan – Manhattan serves as the city’s primary central business district. There are many touristy things to do in Manhattan , including going to the eclectic Times Square, watching a show on Broadway, Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center, and seeing the towering Empire State Building.
  • Central Park – This gorgeous green space is the largest urban park in New York with lots of things to do. The park has plenty of artificial lakes, meadows, and waterfalls, making it the perfect place for an afternoon picnic.
  • Statue of Liberty – This massive neoclassical sculpture is one of the most famous landmarks in the world—a lasting symbol of freedom. Catch a ferry to Liberty Island and marvel at the 305 feet tall copper and steel monument.
  • Brooklyn – This New York borough is a great place to wind down the first day of your 7 days in New York state itinerary. Apart from eating wholesome bagels and attending comedy and music events, you can visit the Brooklyn Museum to see their expansive collection of Egyptian and African art.
  • Long Island – Enjoy some fun in the sun at Long Island’s famed beaches along the North Shore. This densely populated island is also where you’ll find North Fork wineries and get a chance to taste some of the best wines in the US.

Tip: See the best of New York City by going on a one-day guided sightseeing tour .

Day 3: Hudson Valley

Hudson Valley Bridge

On day three of your New York itinerary, you’ll leave the hustle and bustle of New York City and head up to Hudson Valley. This forested region of the state boasts incredible vineyards, orchards, and farms.

It’s about a 2-hour drive, depending on traffic, from New York City to Hudson Valley.

Hudson Valley is every foodie’s dream. This region attracts many chefs who open and run farm-to-table eateries, thanks to the abundance of farmlands. You’ll also find the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, a non-profit farm and research facility.

Some things to add to your Hudson Valley to-do list include:

  • Hudson Valley Farmers’ Market – Get the freshest, healthiest, and tastiest foods and local produce from over 30 vendors. You’ll also enjoy a great atmosphere filled with live music and outgoing locals.
  • Hudson State Historic Park Walkway – A popular attraction among locals, this 1.28-mile walkway is the perfect spot to see the great Hudson River and the surrounding landscape. You’ll see people walking, cycling, or running here, and the best part – it’s absolutely free to enter all year round.
  • Benmarl Winery – Go wine tasting at the oldest vineyard in America. This lush green estate in Marlboro overlooks the Hudson Valley. You can enjoy a fresh cheese platter while you sip your Marlboro Village Blush wine and gaze at the panoramic views.
  • Minnewaska State Park Preserve – If you’re a nature lover, look no further than this 22,275-acre preserve. Here you can hike, bike, or simply stroll around and get in touch with nature.

Tip : If you want to experience the Hudson Valley from the water, join a Hudson River sightseeing cruise .

Day 4-5: The Catskill Mountains

Kaaterskill Waterfall

Usher in the fourth day of your one week in New York state itinerary with a drive to the breathtaking Catskill Mountains. It’s about a 1-hour drive in good conditions to get there.

Simply known as the Catskills, this mountain range offers excellent hiking, walking, and biking trails. It also has an abundance of wildlife and ski resorts that you’ll fall in love with.

Some fun things you could add to your Catskills itinerary include:

  • Take a Craft Beer Tour – The Catskills locals love to have a good time. Plan a craft beer tour and enjoy the best brews from top Catskills breweries. The Shrewd Fox Brewery uses all-natural and non-GMO ingredients sourced locally.
  • Hike to Kaaterskill Falls – This adventure is ideal for all the camera-happy hikers. These falls are one of New York’s tallest cascades at 229 feet and the most famous. The trek is about a 1.6-mile round trip and varies in difficulty from easy to hard.

Day 5-6: The Adirondack Mountains

Adirondack Mountain range and lake during fall

A week in New York may not be enough to explore all that the state has to offer. But one place you should definitely have on your list is the lush Adirondack Mountains. It’s about 3 hours 50 minutes to drive to Lake Placid from the Catskills.

Simply known as the Adirondacks, this chain of mountains has over 2,000 miles of hiking trails, more than 3,000 lakes and ponds, and about 1,200 miles of rivers.

Some things you could enjoy in the Adirondacks include:

  • Lake Placid – This upstate New York destination is an alpine village and a lake. The quaint village boasts plenty of hiking trails and green rolling hills. This town is a famous Winter Olympics venue and a hub for snow sports like skiing and snowshoeing.
  • Fort Ticonderoga – Learn some history at this 18th-century fort that serves as a strategic point during the American Revolutionary War .
  • Whitewater Rafting – With so many rivers in the Adirondacks, going whitewater rafting is a can’t-miss. You can also opt for kayaking or river tubing.

Day 6-7: Thousand Islands

Boldt Castle on Thousand Islands, New York

Tucked between the United States and Canadian border, the Thousand Islands archipelago boasts more than 1,800 islands dotted across the St. Lawrence River. This region is a water wonderland offering plenty of outdoor activities and waterparks.

The drive to Thousand Islands is about 2 hours 50 minutes.

You’ll also find plenty of mansions and castles like Singer Castle, featuring Gothic windows and secret passageways. Another beauty is the German-inspired Boldt Castle on Heart Island. There is no shortage of outdoor activities in the Thousand Islands. You can also go fishing, boating, and hiking.

Here are some more activities to consider when visiting Thousand Islands:

  • Antique Boat Museum – See America’s leading nautical collection on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. The museum has a collection of more than 320 unique boats and thousands of artifacts and archives. It hosts the annual Antique Boat Show and the biennial Antique Raceboat Regatta, which take place in August and September, respectively. The museum is also closed for winter.
  • Wellesley Island – This island has several state parks with sandy beaches, hiking trails, and all-season cottages for the perfect upstate New York vacation. You can enjoy outdoor activities like kayaking, cross-country skiing, and trophy fishing.

Day 8: Rochester

Lake in Rochester, New York

Located on Lake Ontario, Rochester is a city full of history and creativity. You’ll find plenty of museums, art galleries, and historical stops. The city’s proximity to the Finger Lakes makes it a popular New York state vacation destination. It’s about a 3-hour drive from the Thousand Islands area.

Thanks to the Genesee River, which runs straight through Rochester’s center, you’ll have access to waterfront parks and restaurants. Outdoor activities you may enjoy include hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming. In winter, tourists love skiing and snowboarding.

Thrill seekers will appreciate visiting the Seabreeze Amusement Park, a historic fun park.

Other Rochester activities you can do include:

  • The Strong National Museum of Play – You’ll have access to the museum’s vast collection of toys and dolls. The museum’s highly interactive collection of toys teaches you about the history of play.
  • Finger Lakes – Enjoy the region’s vast array of wineries dotted along its eleven long and narrow lakes. Popular wine varieties in the area include reds like Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. And white wines, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.

Day 9: Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls in New York

The final stop on your itinerary needs no introduction. Niagara Falls attracts over 30 million visitors a year, and for good reason. This 16.83 sqm natural wonder is part of the Niagara Falls State Park, which straddles Canada and the United States.

You’ll want to get views of the falls from numerous different vantage points . Everyone’s favorite is from the Maid of the Mist boat tour , where you’ll come upon the falls from below. You can also see the falls from the Observation Tower or Prospect Point Viewing Area at Niagara Falls State Park, or the viewing ledge at Terrapin Point on Goat Island.

Another thing we love to do in Niagara Falls is go wine tasting in Niagara on the Lake . The wineries are quite unique, with their own personality, making everything from fruit wine to Ice wine.

If you want to stay longer in Niagara Falls, see our guide on how to plan the perfect Niagara Falls vacation .

Here are some tours you can take to admire Niagara Falls:

Top Tips for Visiting New York State

1. Pack for all seasons – The weather in New York State can be unpredictable, so it’s best to pack for all types of weather just in case. From late spring through early autumn, temperatures can range from mild during the day to cold at night, so layering is key.

In winter, make sure to bring warm clothing such as hats, gloves and snow boots as well as a heavy coat or parka.

2. Prepare for high prices – While visiting New York State, prepare yourself for high prices on food and lodging. Additionally, restaurants where locals eat generally have lower prices than touristy spots near popular attractions.

Buffalo New York

3. Take time to explore smaller cities – New York City is a must-see city, but don’t miss out on small cities where you can experience authentic local life away from the hustle and bustle of the larger metropolitan area.

Cities such as Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse are filled with historic buildings where you can learn about NY’s rich history while enjoying delicious local cuisine.

4. Enjoy outdoor activities – With its diverse landscape (think mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes), New York State is perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Be sure to see the views of Niagara Falls from all angles, explore the hiking trails around Lake Placid, go rock climbing at Shawangunk Ridge or white water rafting on the Hudson River.

5. Visit nationally significant sites – There are numerous important sites throughout New such as Saratoga National Historic Park where visitors can learn about the Revolutionary War battles, or the Women’s Rights National Historical Park where the fight for women’s suffrage began in 1848.

Getting Around New York and Beyond

Half-day trips in new york, full-day trips in new york, final thoughts.

New York is well designed for pedestrians, with wide sidewalks and designated street crossings. Walking and cycling are some of the best ways to explore New York , with the best walking and cycling paths being the Central Park routes, Hudson River path, the High Line, and the Brooklyn Bridge walking path.

It’s no secret that traffic and parking is intense. Renting a car would be pretty inconvenient for your trip. Cabs can help get you from point A to B when you need. New York’s famous yellow taxi cabs are a recognizable icon of the city, and are widely available.

Take note : some taxis only accept cash, and most expect tips between 15% and 20%.

The most common form of transportation is the Metro or Subway, and you’ll understand why after a pricey taxi during rush hour. It operates 24 hours a day, and also runs bus and ferry services across the city.

The Subway has 24 lines that serve Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. While the bus system operates over 250 routes, and bus stops are clearly demarcated with round bus stop signs and route numbers. Basically, it is easy to get pretty much anywhere you wanna go!

An MTA MetroCard costs $1 to activate and must have a minimum value of $5.50. A single route subway or bus journey costs $2.75. If you’re in the city for a while, you might want to invest in an unlimited MetroCard which allows you to ride for seven days for $33.

Even though New York isn’t huge in geographical terms, it can take a while to get in and out of the center of the city. If you’re strapped for time, a half-day trip in New York will give you a taste of the surrounding area without taking too much of your day.

Ellis Island

Day Trip to Ellis Island New York

Ellis Island is located at the mouth of the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey. It is famous for its rich history as an immigration station, welcoming more than 12 million immigrants into the country from 1890-1920. Today, it’s an iconic landmark and powerful symbol of the American Dream.

The island houses a National Immigration Museum and Family History Center. You can search through a collection of records to trace back your family history (if you are American), and find out when your family first arrived in the US.

Even if you don’t have family ancestry to browse through, the island is a historical marvel that boasts some impressive architecture and fun interactive activities.

Ellis Island also has some of the best views of The Statue of Liberty, which is another must do thing in New York !

Suggested trips: Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty Tour

Day Trip to Hoboken New York

Pad out your weekend in New York with a trip across the river. Hoboken is a small city in New Jersey that lies just across the Hudson River from Manhattan. As it’s only a 30-minute drive from lower Manhattan, it’s a great spot to spend some time outside of New York.

Even though it’s labeled a city, I like to think of Hoboken as a small walkable town, with a charming and unique vibe. While it’s hard to leave the razzle dazzle of the Big Apple, once you get to Hoboken everything runs at a slower pace. You’ll be treated to boutique eateries, bars, and local shops.

One of my favorite things about this small city is that it’s relatively tourist-free. You can experience a completely different atmosphere only a few miles away from New York.

The main draw to this riverside town is its views from River Street along the Hudson River. When you imagine the New York skyline, it’s this postcard-perfect view that comes to mind. Take a stroll down the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway for the best views, before heading to the original Cake Boss pastry shop for a sweet treat.

Suggested trips: Half-Day Tour to Hoboken with Skyline Views

Woodbury Commons

Day Trip to Woodbury Commons New York

If Fifth Avenue is a bit out of your price range, Woodbury Commons is the next best shopping spot in New York. It’s only an hour drive from Manhattan, and has a wealth of brands and deals.

The best days to visit are Monday through Thursday, before the weekend crowds take over. You’ll find everything from luxury Prada and Gucci retailers, to Lindt Chocolate Shops and Applebee’s. You are guaranteed your favorite store is hidden away in this sprawling mall.

The best thing, is that it’s entirely outdoors. You’ll be getting some fresh air while you shop around for the best deals. Winter wanderers, wrap up warm!

Suggested trips: Woodbury Commons Outlet Shopping Trip

When you have a bit more time on your hands, New York is positioned between the mountains, oceans, forests, and a bunch of other cities. These are some day trips from New York that will give you a chance to explore something other than the busy streets of the city.

The Hamptons

Day Trip to The Hamptons New York

The Hamptons is a classic for locals. Located at the east end of Long Island, it is just about two hours drive from Manhattan (given you don’t get stuck in heavy traffic).

There is East Hampton and Southampton, both known for their rural vibe and small-town charm. You’ll find pristine sidewalks, local wineries, manicured parks, and perfectly organized shop and restaurant displays throughout the towns. They look like a picture-perfect movie set most of the time.

Sag Harbor sits between East and Southampton, and is a historic landmark in itself. Back in its early days, it was the first port of entry to the new Unites States, and is home to the first US Customs house.

Besides the charming towns and villages, the Hamptons are lined with exquisite beaches that draw beachgoers to their shores every summer. But note, many beaches are private and require residents’ permits, while some public beaches require day pass permits.

On weekends, the Main Beach in East Hampton and Two Mile Hollow Beach only release forty day-passes each day. Be sure to have this organized in your New York itinerary if you want a sandy day!

If you continue along the coast, you’ll find Montauk right at the end. Also an epic getaway spot and home to some gorgeous, cosy Montauk Bed and Breakfasts to rest your head at.

Suggested trips: The Hamptons and Sag Harbor and The Hamptons and Long Island Wineries

Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May Beach

Cape May is a small beach town located at the southern horn of New Jersey, and is only a two and a half hour drive from New York.

Cape May is known for its beautiful beaches and boardwalks, but there is more to explore than the surf and sand. The town has a rich history and boasts 19th-century architectural diversity. In fact, the picturesque town holds the title of the ‘First Seaside Holiday Town in America’.

A hotspot for outdoor activities, there is biking, boating, bird watching, and fishing, if you’re feeling adventurous. If relaxing is more your speed, there are many fine dining restaurants and antique shops to browse. Why not extend your trip and spend a night in this cozy condo .

Long Island

Day Trip to Long Island

Long Island is the biggest island in the USA and extends from New York to Montauk Point, just past the Hamptons. Fun fact – the well-known New York neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens are actually located on this island!

Long Island is packed with fun things to do for the whole family. It’s hard to fit all its offerings into a single-day tour, consider staying in Long Island and make a full itinerary! From stunning hikes, beaches, and vineyards to manicured gardens, extravagant mansions, and seaside villages, there’s an abundance of things to explore.

It is an easy trip to do alone, without the guidance of a tour guide.

Suggested trips: Long Island Wine Tour and Long Island Brewery Tour

The Delaware River

Day Trip to The Delaware River

The Delaware River is a huge river that passes through five states, and provides drinking water for millions of Americans. It starts through Philadelphia, before splitting off into different tributaries in the northern part of the state. Depending on what point of the river you visit, it’s only about an hour and a half drive out of New York.

The river isn’t only used as a water source, it’s also a great place to enjoy some outdoor activities! When you’re itching to escape the dynamic city of New York, visit the river for a kayaking trip and some outdoor fun.

There are also tons of walking, hiking, and mountain biking trails along the river’s edge.

Suggested trips: Delaware River Kayak and Wine Tour

The Catskills

The Catskills

No matter how much of a city person you are, it’s always great to get out of the hustle and bustle and explore the great outdoors. The Catskills are a mountain range in Upstate New York, located two hours north of Manhattan.

During the summer months, it is a great hiking location with a bunch of waterfalls, river streams, and tall peaks to explore. My favorite time to visit is during winter, when a thick layer of snow covers the mountains. The Catskills are home to two of New York’s top ski resorts – Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain. Both are great for every level of skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, or just enjoying a hot cocoa.

There are a few small villages to explore too. Two of the best towns worth checking out are Tannersville and Andes, both of which have a bunch of cafes, eateries, day spas, and shops to keep you busy.

Airbnb experience: Horseback Guided Mountain Trail in the Catskills

Philadelphia and Amish Country

Day Trip to Philadelphia and The Amish Country

One of the most unique day trips from New York is a trip to Amish Country in Pennsylvania for a taste of the simple life. In a world overcome with modern technology, life can get pretty fast-paced and stressful, and I’m sure we’ve all been intrigued by the low-key lifestyle of the Amish Mennonite people.

Lancaster County is located just west of Philadelphia, and is home to America’s largest Amish community. You can hop on the train at Penn Station in Manhatten and be in Philidelphia within an hour and a half. From there, rent a car or join one of the local Amish country guided tours.

When you visit this region, you’ll be able to explore markets and experience local cooking and cuisine. You can even have an authentic Amish buggy ride through the countryside, and learn what it’s like to live without modern technology. Try leaving your phone off during the tour to get the full experience!

Suggested trips: The Amish Country with Amish Mennonite Guides

Hartford, Connecticut

Elizabeth Park Hartford Connecticut

Hartford is the capital city of Connecticut, and is only a two and a half hour drive, or train ride, from Manhattan. Founded in 1635, it is one of the oldest cities in America, and houses the country’s oldest public art museum as well as the famous Mark Twain House.

I recommend making a trip to the Connecticut Science Center, especially for those with young kids. The museum has a bunch of DIY activities that explore the science of sound, sight, and space.

If the weather cooperates, stop off at the Elizabeth Park Rose Garden for some fresh air and beautiful views. It’s one of the most extensive rose gardens in the country, with over 800 varieties of roses. Bushnell Park is another great outdoor space to enjoy the sunshine.

If a day isn’t enough time to explore all that Hartford has to offer, book a night at this cozy suite .

New Haven and Yale University

Yale University Connecticut

From uncrowded beaches to tasty cuisine and exciting art, New Haven is a beautiful place to visit from Manhattan, especially during the summer. This Connecticut town is only an hour and forty minutes from New York by car, and is most well known for being the home of Yale University.

With the Ivy League school bringing academics and students to the city, you’ll be able to watch collegiate sports matches, see world-class events, festivals, shops, museums, and of course, some top restaurants and bars too.

Besides the exquisite university campuses, New Haven is dotted with spectacular churches and buildings, and a culturally exciting downtown. Some of the best restaurants in the city can be found in Little Italy, which is a great spot to grab some grub after a day exploring.

For those who really want to immerse in the city, this full loft condo in the heart of the action is perfect.

The Poconos Mountains

Day Trip to The Poconos Mountains

The Poconos is another beautiful mountain region in Pennsylvania that is just a couple of hours’ drive from New York City.

During summer, it is most well known for bird watching, zip-lining, fishing, and whitewater rafting. Depending on how much time you have to spend, you can embark on an overnight hike or spend the day exploring the botanical wonders.

Those visiting with young kids can enjoy the local adventure and water parks. With stunning lakes in the valley mountains, there are also loads of lake beaches to relax on, if that’s more your vibe.

When winter hits, the mountains become a wonderland covered with snow attracting all sorts of winter sports fanatics. There are five main ski resorts in these mountains, including Big Boulder Ski Area, Blue Mountain Resort, and Camelback Mountain.

The resort villages and towns appropriately self-define themselves as ‘small-town charm meets big mountains.’

New York is one of those cities that never stops giving. However, a visit isn’t complete without seeing more of what New York state, and surrounding states, have to offer.

As the city is conveniently located between New Jersey and Connecticut, and only a quick drive from Philadelphia and Maryland, you can take some of the most exciting day trips from New York City.

My personal favorite trip would have to be a trip to the Poconos or Catskills. After spending a week or so in the big city, there’s nothing better than escaping to the mountains, whether it be to ski in winter or hike in the summer.

Broome County has one very distinct feature that sets it apart from the rest of the state: It is home to a mass of carousels generously gifted to the people of the county by George F. Johnson, president of the Endicott Johnson Corporation. Six carousels — most are on the National Register of Historic Places — are dotted throughout the county at West Endicott Park, George W. Johnson Park, Highland Park, Ross Park, George F. Johnson Recreation Park, and C. Fred Johnson Recreation Park. Create a passport for your family and indulge in a special dinner after you've ridden every carousel on this list .

Lockport Caves and Boat Tours

For this next day trip, go deep. Deep underground that is. The Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride, on the Erie Canal, is a half-hour drive from Niagara Falls and takes you to the underground caves and locks created by the canal system. The tour lasts just over an hour and features both man-made and geological wonders that are sure to astound. Bonus challenge: See how many words you can remember to the  Erie Canal song  on your drive there.

A day in Lake George

Lake George  is a four-season destination for the family, but summer is the best time to get out and really explore. Start on Canada Street, where a few arcades invite families to try their hand at old-school Skee ball or more modern computer-generated games. From there, work your way to one of the many mini golf courses (we're partial to  Around The World  for its kitschy vibe) where you can come up with fun rewards for the winner (whoever wins gets out of dishwashing duty that week, for example). Zip across the street to  Million Dollar Beach , so-named for its astounding views and white sandy beach, and wind down the day there.

Nestled into the rolling Hudson Valley  farmland in the town of Ghent, Art Omi is a 60-acre sculpture park that features fixed and rotating exhibits. Like crops springing up from garden soil, some of the sculptures (which kids are welcome to climb and play on, in most instances) seem as though they grew right out of the ground. There is plenty of space for kids to run and play while parents get to take in a bit of culture. A cafe serves cold drinks and locally-sourced sandwiches, soups, and baked goods, or stop at  Golden Harvest farmstand  on your way by and grab doughnuts, cider, and maybe a bottle of  Harvest Spirits brand liquor , made on-site, to enjoy after the kids are in bed. Olana State Historic Site , Thoman Cole National Historic Site (both part of the  Hudson River School of Art ) and the  Martin Van Buren House  are all nearby to extend your day.

Old-Time Baseball

Baseball is America's game, and it really isn't summer unless you've taken in a few innings. Why not go back to the beginnings and see baseball as it was once played? Known then as base ball (two words!), players at Genesee Country Village and Museum don vintage wool uniforms and wooden bats, minus gloves and protective equipment. The National Silver Ball Tournament is played here, scheduled for August 12-14 this year. Access to games is permitted with purchase of a museum pass .

Enchanted Forest Water Safari

A day in Old Forge

Old Forge  feels like a distant relic of what New York State used to be: Everything moves a little slower in Old Forge, and the best parts of the town are untouched to maintain their vintage charms. Start the day with a big breakfast at  Keyes Pancake House  before heading to  Enchanted Forest Water Safari . Here, you can relive your own childhood memories while making new ones with your children, especially on the historic rides, electric train, and storybook village. Once breakfast has settled, don your swimsuits and embrace the summer-smell of chlorine with the many water slides and amusements. Dry off, then cap your day in Old Forge at the famous hardware store . Pick up a memento to remember your trip by (the bear bumper stickers are a hit) and a box of legendary fudge to enjoy on your way home.
