Table of Contents

Where is South West Rocks?

Never heard of South West Rocks? It’s located just over an hour’s drive South of Coffs Harbour, and the same distance North of Port Macquarie. Between these two regions, there is a lot to see and do, especially the beautifully stunning and deserted beaches. The mid-north coast is a hugely underrated area, and South West Rocks is a reason for this. It is beautiful here, and definitely worth a visit on your East Coast road trip!

20 things to do in South West Rocks

1. trial bay gaol.

trial-bay-gaol-south-west-rocks

The historic Trial Bay Gaol is one of the top attractions in South West Rocks which brings in visitors from all over Australia. Built in 1886, the heritage listed building housed prisoners who were brought to the area to build the breakwater to make a safe harbour between Brisbane and Sydney.

The jail then became a World War 1 prison for people of German descent. You can jump on a guided tour to learn all about the jail in Arakoon National Park.

2. Smoky Cape Lighthouse

smokey-cape-lighthouse-south-west-rocks

Smoky Cape Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in Australia and is definitely one of the best things to do in South West Rocks!

The 10 minute drive up to Smoky Cape Lighthouse is gorgeous and when you get there, you’ll have a steep hill to climb. Don’t worry it’s not too far and will take about five minutes, with a few stops to catch your breath.

We saw people of all ages climbing up it. When you get to the top, you’ll get incredible views looking out to Hat Head National Park! We also really wanted to check out two awesome beaches on the other side of the lookout but we ran out of time.

South West Rocks beaches

South West Rocks is home to some beautiful beaches which you need to check out. Here’s our favourites!

3. Trial Bay Gaol Beach

trial-bay-beach-south-west-rocks

Trial Bay Gaol Beach is absolutely gorgeous and is one of the best beaches for kids as it’s got shallow water and is really flat, and a perfect place to bring your SUP and go paddle boarding.

AND you can actually watch the sunset over the ocean from Trial Gaol Beach. That’s always one thing I miss living on the East Coast of Australia, it’s so rare to be able to watch the sunset over the water. But you can at Trial Gaol Beach purely because of the angle of the beach.

4. Horseshoe Bay

Horseshoe-beach-south-west-rocks

There’s three beaches to choose from right in the middle of South West Rocks. If you’re staying at Horseshoe Bay Holiday Park, you’ll get to the pick of the bunch. Horseshoe Bay is a lovely little beach, while to the right you have a long stretch of Trial Bay Beach and Back Beach to the left.

5. Little Bay Beach

little-bay-beach-south-west-rocks

Just outside of town lies Little Bay, a gorgeous little beach which is home to loads of kangaroos, picnic benches and rock pools. Make sure you make the effort to check out this beach as it’s beautiful!

6. Gap beach

gap-beach-south-west-rocks

You can only access Gap beach via a walking track but we love secluded beaches so make sure you go check it out!

8. North Smokey Beach

north-smokey-beach-south-west-rocks

There’s also two secluded beaches just below the Smoky Cape Lighthouse which look incredible. You’ll need to access them via the John Perkins track but for us, these are there beaches we’d be making a beeline for on our next trip to South West Rocks.

8. South Smoky Beach

south-smoky-beach-south-west-rocks

You can see South Smoky Beach from the lighthouse and from what we saw, you can drive your 4×4 on it too!

South West Rocks Hikes

One of the best things about South West Rocks is the amount of hiking on offer. To me, this is the biggest draw card to staying here at this slice of paradise.

If you’re wondering what the hiking looks like, here are some of the most popular:

9. Rainforest Walking Tack

Rainforest-walking-track-south-west-rocks

The rainforest walking track in Hat Head is a short walk from one end of the Gap Beach to the other. It’s easy to find and suitable for all ages and takes around 30 minutes to complete.

10. Jack Perkins Walking Track

jack-perkins-walking-track-south-west-rocks

The Jack Perkins walking track starts at Smoky Cape Lighthouse and takes you to the stunning North Smoky Beach. It’s just a 2km walk and takes around 30 minutes return. Just be prepared to walk back up the hill on the way back to the car.

11. Bridle Trail

bridle-trail-south-west-rocks

Bridle Trail is a lovely 15 minute walk which leads to Little Bay. Here you can catch a glimpse of the heritage of the Trail Bay Gaol. You’ll walk through the beautiful rainforest and on your way you should look out for the remains of the old iron pipe which used to supply water to the gaol.

12. Little Bay to Smoky Cape Lighthouse

little-bay-to-smoky-cape-walk

Looking for a longer South West Rocks walk? Make sure you check out Little Bay to Smoky Cape walk.

The 10KM (one way) coastal track takes you from Little Bay to Smoky Cape Lighthouse, with a detour to The Gap Beach. As it passes along the cliffs, you might be able to spot some whales if you visit during the migration season from June – November. Be aware there’s no public transport to pick you up at the end, so you’ll need to walk the 10KM back!

13. Gap Beach walking Track

South-west-rocks-gap-beach-walking-track

If you’re looking to do a shorter walk, then you can do the 6KM (2-3 hours return) Gap Beach walking track which takes you from Little Bay and finishes at Gap Beach, rather than Smoky Cape Lighthouse.

14. Dive at the incredible Fish Rock Cave

Fish-Rock-Cave-Sharks-south-west-rocks-diving

Fish Rock Cave is an awesome scuba diving cave where grey nurse sharks can be found year round.

But it’s no surprise Fish Rock Cave is not only one of the best dive sites in Australia with South West Rocks Dive , it’s home to the largest ocean cavern in the southern hemisphere. At 120m long, Fish Cave Rock brings in divers from around the world.

Nothing will actually prepare you for the sight where you’ll see thousands of wobbegong sharks and a large bull ray just resting on the bottom, it’s something you need to see in person.

15. Snorkel at Back Creek

back-creek-south-west-rocks

If you’re new to snorkelling then you should snorkel along Back Creek on the incoming tide to view all of the fish around. It’s really shallow so it’s a perfect activity for families.

15. Play golf or tennis at the South West Rocks Country Club

If you’re looking for things to do in South West Rocks, check out the South West Rocks Country Club. It’s home to a beautiful 18 hole golf course and tennis club complete with a restaurant as well. If you’re bored of the beach, this is a fun activity which is located on the edge of town.

17. Learn to surf with a pro

trent-munro-surf-academy-south-west-rocks

If you’re wanting to learn to surf then there’s no better place to do it than in South West Rocks. Former pro surfer, Trent Munro has his own Surf Academy and runs lessons for all levels and ages.

18. Go shopping in South West Rocks

south-west-rocks-shops

There’s some fantastic shops in South West Rocks. You could easily buy a new wardrobe at Raw Spice Boutique, buy homewares at Good Vibes.

19. Where to eat in South West Rocks

malt-&-honey-south-west-rocks-cafes

While it’s obvious that South West Rocks isn’t as modern as other beach towns in New South Wales, there are a couple of decent places to eat here. Don’t expect posh restaurants yet, although I’m sure in time, they will start popping up.

Seabreeze Beach Hotel is the main pub in town, serving up Aussie pub classics. Trial Bay Kiosk is home to the best views, and the only place which is a hop skip and a jump from the Trial Bay Gaol campsite.

Sixty Degrees as well as Malt & Honey serve up healthy, hipster food such as acai bowls and avo on toast. If you’re visiting Malt & Honey, order the famous mushrooms dish. They had sold out of it when we visited.

20. South West Rocks Accommodation

salt-south-west-rocks

10 incredible things to do in South West Rocks

Taylah Darnell

Editorial Assistant

03 February 2023

Time

Here are 10   of the best things to do in South West Rocks that you ‘ve probably never heard of but definitely should know about.

Hidden away smack bang between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour on Australia’s Mid-North Coast is the sleepy town of South West Rocks. It may not seem like it on the drive in to town,  with its quiet streets and quaint shops , but this coastal locality is bursting with things to do.

1. Backflip off Back Creek Bridge

Back Creek is known among locals for its crystal-clear water, boisterous high-tide flow and of course, its unique bridge that is part boardwalk part plunge platform. Pick a spot on the grass, whether it be by a barbecue or near the water’s edge, to enjoy a day at one of the best swimming spots in South West Rocks.

If you dare, climb the bridge to its highest point and bomb into the blue waters below. Put your brave face on, as local kids are known to hover about and watch, waiting eagerly for their turn. For those who’d rather a slower entrance, opt for the boardwalk, which has a spot with steps.

If you head down at high tide, bring an inflatable. It’s a rite of passage to jump in at the mouth of the creek and let the strong current pull you back towards the bridge.   There’s also plenty of space to swim along the shore, plus areas to deploy kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. All that swimming got you hungry? Head across the road to Back Creek Cafe, one of the best cafes in town .

2. Grab grub at The Kiosk in Horseshoe Bay

The best place in town for fish and chips might just be the most unlikely. Perched on the top of the hill between Horseshoe Bay and Main Beach is The Kiosk at Horseshoe Bay , renowned for serving up all the best post-swim snacks.

From delicious burgers, freshly cooked hot chips and seafood galore to creamy milkshakes, ice creams and lollies to go, you’ll be spoilt for choice.   We recommend grabbing take-away and sitting under the Norfolk pines overlooking Horseshoe Bay; it’s a classic holiday experience sprinkled with some South West Rocks magic.

3. Picnic at Monument Point

Just behind The Kiosk at Horseshoe Bay, you’ll find a view that rivals most, so pack yourself a picnic and head to Monument Point for sprawling ocean views. It’s also a great spot to watch whales head to their summer feeding grounds in the Antarctic after breeding in the north if you’re visiting between September and October.

Set up on the grass either in the sun or under the shade of a Norfolk to watch the waves crash on the jagged rocks below, which at low tide form beautiful, small rock pools that you can swim in.

This is also a great snorkelling spot at low tide. Make your way down to the rocks to witness the marine life up close; locals have even spotted dolphins frolicking in the waves here. If you’re keen to snorkel but don’t have much experience, head around the corner to Trial Bay Beach to snorkel in the shallows near the Surf Club for a calmer introduction.

4. Pick up souvenirs at The Shell Shop

The Shell Shop on Gregory Street is a perfect example of what makes South West Rocks so special. Showcasing a mind-boggling range of shells displayed inside glass cabinets, The Shell Shop sells the perfect souvenir; something truly local and rare to find elsewhere. Think conch shells of every size and colour, spiral shells, pearly scallop shells and even coral and crystals. The owner uses these finds to create homemade gifts, such as jewellery boxes, necklaces and outdoor hanging decorations.

Next door yet still connected to The Shell Shop, you’ll find a small but well-stocked nursery that you can buy from as well. You’ll be surprised at the low-cost total of your purchases.

5. Play golf alongside wild kangaroos

The town is nestled between two national parks and surrounded by lush bushland, so it’s no surprise that the kangaroo population in South West Rocks is numerous. In fact, they can be seen bounding across residential streets and grazing near beaches.

South West Rocks Country Club

The 18-hole course is just a short walk from the beach.

The South West Rocks Country Club is no exception, expect to spot kangaroos munching away on the well-trimmed grass. Thankfully they’re skilled at staying out of the way when it comes time to tee off. The Country Club allows non-members to play the 18-hole course for a $30 social green fee ($25 for nine holes). Barefoot bowls and tennis courts are also available to book (kangaroo sightings are thrown in for free).

6. Explore the old Trial Bay Gaol

Step back in time as you enter the ancient ruins of Trial Bay Gaol , which opened in 1886 after its construction 13 years earlier. A unique example of a public works prison, it was also used as an internment camp in World War I.

There are plenty of tours available, from twilight and sunset tours to a life behind bars kids tour. A museum and memorial nearby also offer visitors deeper insight into how life was for prisoners when the gaol was still operational.

Trial Bay Gaol is located within the Arakoon National Park, so there’s plenty to explore once you finish your tour. Hike the Powder Magazine walking track or spend the night and pitch a tent at the nearby Trial Bay Gaol campground.

7. 4WD along South Smoky Beach

Navigate your way down the dirt roads through Arakoon National Park to South Smoky Beach, where the flat, hard sand makes the perfect place to 4WD safely. You’ll need to pre-book a beach driving permit online or in person with Kempsey Council and be aware that the last 500 metres of the north end of the beach is closed to all vehicles.

The 15-kilometre stretch of beach boasts some of the most stunning scenery along the coast. There’s dense bushland behind you, a tumbling ocean in front and two cliff faces on either side, one adorned with the historic Smoky Cape Lighthouse.

Renowned among locals as a surfing hotspot, this stretch of beach offers some of the best breaks in town. For those looking to swim, be aware that South Smoky Beach is not patrolled. If you’ve got little ones, don’t fret; there are plenty of other gorgeous beaches to choose from .

8. Discover treasures at Opals Gems & Things

Enter a world of all things shimmery and shiny at Opals Gems & Things in the main drag of South West Rocks.  It’s a great place to pick up a gift for yourself or someone special, with everything from raw crystals and shaped gems to handmade jewellery and decorative pieces. Every shelf is neatly organised by the type of crystal or gem, with small notes that detail the meaning behind each.

9. Experience a slice of history at Smoky Cape Lighthouse

The stunning yet historic Smoky Cape Lighthouse sits atop a narrow headline between North Smoky and South Smoky beaches. Built in 1891, the lighthouse was designed by architect James Barnet. It was named after the headland, which Captain Cook dubbed Smoky Cape after he saw fires burning there in 1770. The walk from the car park is steep but you’ll be rewarded with grand coastal views and plenty of wildlife-spotting opportunities along the way.

10. Wander the Beachside Markets

On the second Saturday of every month, South West Rocks transforms into a hub for local produce, custom crafts and decor, live music, clothes, food trucks and plants. Held at the picturesque Horseshoe Bay, visitors can wander through the stalls of the Beachside Markets , then sit in the shade of the Norfolks for lunch or jump into the sea for a dip.

The markets start bright and early at 8am and wrap up around 1pm. Additional markets are held each Saturday during the school holidays, making it the perfect family-friendly activity to add to your itinerary.

About South West Rocks

Nestled on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales (NSW), South West Rocks emerges as a quaint coastal haven at the mouth of the Macleay River. Intriguingly, the town’s nomenclature is shrouded in maritime history.

According to local lore, South West Rocks acquired its name from astute ship captains navigating the waters. They attested to the safety of mooring vessels near the rocks, specifically southwest of Laggers Point, where Trial Bay Gaol stands today. This trivia tidbit weaves a historical narrative, connecting the town’s nautical past to its distinctive geographic features, underscoring South West Rocks as a destination where tales of the sea echo through time.

How do you get to South West Rocks from Sydney?

Covering a distance of approximately 450 kilometres, the journey from Sydney to South West Rocks unfolds along a scenic coastal route, offering a picturesque drive that spans nearly 5 hours.

Traversing through charming small coastal towns and cities, the route provides a visually delightful experience, showcasing the region’s coastal beauty. It’s worth noting that this route involves toll roads, adding convenience to the trip. Embark on this road adventure to South West Rocks, immersing yourself in the coastal allure and discovering the captivating landscapes that unfold along the way.

By Public Transport

Regrettably, no direct train or bus service connects Sydney to South West Rocks. To embark on this journey using public transportation, one must first board a North West train bound for Kempsey train station. From Kempsey, a bus route is available, with the destination being Belgrave Street after Stuart Street. Finally, the last leg of the trip involves taking another bus from Belgrave Street to reach South West Rocks.

For the most current and accurate information regarding public transportation options and the optimal route, it is advisable to refer to the Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) website. Stay informed and plan your journey seamlessly with the latest updates provided by TfNSW.

Places to See from Sydney to South West Rocks

Traversing the coastal route unveils charming small towns and cities, each possessing unique and captivating character. Embarking on this road trip to South West Rocks allowed me to explore three additional towns/cities, each contributing its distinct charm to the scenic journey.

Newcastle , located north of Sydney, is one of my preferred destinations. Having frequented the city numerous times, I consistently find it enchanting. As the second-largest city in New South Wales (NSW), Newcastle serves as an excellent stopover during road trips to the north.

Spanning approximately 170 kilometres, the drive from Sydney to Newcastle takes about 2 hours. The city boasts vibrant cafes and restaurants, offering a diverse culinary experience that caters to all tastes. Newcastle’s lively atmosphere and culinary delights make it a perennial favourite on my journeys northward.

Nestled in the Mid-North Coast region, Forster emerges as a charming coastal town that became a noteworthy stopover during my road trip. Boasting a plethora of cafes and restaurants, Forster offers delightful options for a lunch break. The city has beautiful beaches, adding a scenic backdrop to its allure.

Notably, Forster is home to the “Big Turtle,” a prominent addition to the collection of iconic “ Big Things ” in New South Wales (NSW). This quaint town seamlessly blends culinary delights, coastal beauty, and quirky attractions, making it a captivating destination for travellers exploring the Mid-North Coast.

Taree served as another noteworthy stopover on my journey. Nestled in the scenic Manning Valley on the north coast of New South Wales (NSW), this town is adorned with beautiful buildings and has rich historical charm.

Exploring Taree unveils iconic landmarks, including the renowned Big Oyster and the historic Martin Bridge. The town’s blend of architectural beauty and historical significance adds a unique flavour to the road trip, making Taree a compelling destination for those seeking a glimpse into the past while appreciating distinctive local attractions.

Where to Stay in South West Rocks?

When looking for accommodations in South West Rocks, consider the following options that cater to different preferences and budgets:

  • Rockpool Motor Inn : Located near the town centre, Rockpool Motor Inn offers comfortable rooms with modern amenities. Its proximity to popular attractions and beaches makes it a convenient choice.
  • Costa Rica Motel : A recommended choice for a cozy and friendly atmosphere. It’s known for clean, comfortable rooms, and there’s a special discount if you book scuba diving with Fish Rock Dive Centre.
  • Heritage Guesthouse : If you appreciate historical charm, consider Heritage Guesthouse . This heritage-listed building offers a unique and nostalgic stay in the heart of South West Rocks.

My accommodation at Costa Rica Motel was delightful, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The rooms were impeccably clean and provided a comfortable retreat. The motel owners were amiable, adding a warm and welcoming touch to the overall experience. I highly recommend considering this motel for your stay.

An additional perk worth noting is that if you book scuba diving with Fish Rock Dive Centre, you’ll receive an exclusive 10% discount code. This code can be applied when booking your stay directly on the Costa Rica Motel website. It is a fantastic deal for those looking to combine their underwater adventures with a cozy and hospitable accommodation experience.

Things To Do in South West Rocks

Scuba diving in south west rocks.

Renowned for its exceptional dive sites, the town is a haven for underwater enthusiasts. One standout location is the Shark Gutter, which is celebrated for providing an extraordinary opportunity to dive with numerous Grey Nurse Sharks. Divers have reported encounters with as many as 50 sharks simultaneously, creating an exhilarating experience. Additionally, there’s a captivating cave dive, accessible by boat, offering a unique underwater exploration.

Regrettably, my scuba diving plans were thwarted due to a substantial swell, posing significant risks for boats venturing into the ocean that morning. Safety concerns led to the cancellation of my dive.

For diving enthusiasts, two prominent dive centres, Fish Rock Dive Centre and South West Rocks Dive Centre , facilitate trips to the caves and Shark Gutter. I found Fish Rock Dive Centre a more economical choice than South West Rocks Dive Centre for my scuba diving adventure.

Trial Bay Gaol

Among the most stunning prisons I’ve encountered is the Trial Bay Gaol, a heritage-listed former prison in South West Rocks. Established in 1886, this site offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of South West Rocks.

  • Open every day from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, the Trial Bay Gaol welcomes visitors with an entrance fee of AUD 11 per adult.
  • Beyond its historical significance, the gaol’s grounds are inhabited by kangaroos, adding a unique and unexpected touch to the visitor experience.

Explore the rich history and natural surroundings at this captivating site in South West Rocks.

Smoky Cape Lighthouse

Every weekend is an adventure

Three-day road trip circuit from brisbane to south west rocks.

  • Post published: 4 October 2017
  • Post category: Australia / New South Wales / Oceania/South Pacific

South West Rocks had been on my Australia’ bucket list for a long time. It’s one of the best scuba diving sites between Brisbane and Sydney with a cave surrounded by grey nurse sharks. We used a long weekend (three days) to drive down there from Brisbane .

It’s a fantastic weekend destination for scuba diving from Brisbane . But this three-day road trip from Brisbane will give you an opportunity to discover new places to enjoy even if you don’t dive !

A three-day trip was short but worth it. We had a very good time, but I wish we did it this road trip a four-day long weekend . I am looking forward to going again though, as there is a lot more to see. If you’re planning a longer road trip, click here to download my Brisbane to Sydney free guide.

Road Trip Circuit Brisbane South West Rocks - 3 days

You’ll find below details about our itinerary and a few things we learnt along the way.

Brisbane –> Byron Bay –> Yamba

We left Brisbane and Queensland on Friday after work and stopped for a long  dinner break in Byron Bay . It was very late when we reached Yamba , so we found a quiet spot near the road for the night. It is legal to sleep in your car in New South Wales (at least when I’m writing this article), as long as you are parked legally, but many places have signs indicating “No overnight stay”. Be ready for it, as it was the case in Byron Bay and Yamba. We use the free app CamperMate to find free rest areas with toilets; there are a few near the M1.

You may want to plan to arrive earlier than we did to push a bit further and sleep in a nicer spot in Yuraygir National Park .

There are scenic coastal walks there if you have more time than us – or if you get up early the next day!

Responsible travel tip : Always respect the places you visit. Don’t disturb the neighbours (humans or wildlife) and leave the site how you found it – or better! – by picking up all rubbish!

Yamba is a reputed surfing spot. We had a morning stroll on  the beach near Angourie Blue Pool , where we spotted dolphins and enjoyed the beautiful rock formations and dramatic sky. The view from the lighthouse in Yamba is worth the short detour too.

Yamba - lighthouse

South West Rocks

We decided to go straight to South West Rocks and skip Urunga Boardwalk and Nambucca Heads to have more time to explore Hat Head National Park .

We camped at Smokey Cape , where big kangaroos welcomed us on arrival and in the morning. Not far from the campsite, a short walk to the lighthouse offers fantastic views of the coast on both sides of the cape, including views of the rocks where we were diving the next day.

From the lighthouse carpark, we went down to the beach and scrambled from one secluded bay to another, while watching whales migrating along the coast . They come up along the East Coast of Australia during Winter and go down during Spring.

For our next South West Rocks visit, we may have a look at  Little Bay Beach in Arakoon National Park , via Monument Hill walking track (3-kilometre walk).

South West Rocks - panoramique

Diving Fish Rock Cave in South West Rock was the reason why we did this road trip in the first place.

It’s one of the longest underwater cave you can explore with a simple open water certification. Click here to read the article about diving Fish Rock Cave in South West Rock .

The Waterfall Way: Ebor Falls –> Wollomombi Falls (Oxley Wild Rivers NP)

Going back to Brisbane along the Pacific Motorway – the same way we came down – wasn’t very appealing. We still had 1.5 days, so we wanted to make the most of it! So we took an inland scenic route from Coffs Harbour.

We stopped at many waterfalls on the way and hiked amazing gorges. We loved it so much that we decided to go there again on our way back from Sydney. Click here to read the full article about the Waterfall Way in Dorrigo and Oxley Wild Rivers National Parks.

Dangar Falls - Waterfall Way - Dorrigo NP

Way back to Brisbane

The Pacific Motorway along the coast is quite boring. Although it’s longer, we found it a lot nicer to take the inland roads as we had all day to go back up. There are great options to break the drive if you don’t mind arriving late in Brisbane.

The Australian Standing Stones are on the way.

To be honest, I didn’t find it interesting, but it’s a better toilet stop than the petrol station. I am from Brittany – where the Celtic culture is very strong. I found it weird to stumble upon fake modern looking stones and a small Excalibur sword. The atmosphere is probably very different when the Celtic festival is on. But like this by itself, it didn’t really make sense to me.

Australian Standing Stones

If you haven’t explored it yet, check out the Granite Belt with a walk in Girraween National Park or Bald Rock National Park .

Both will give you a different experience than the parks closer to Brisbane. If it’s raining, you may want to revise that plan as granite gets very slippery. Although it’s not the most recommended stop during a road trip, there are wineries in that region too.

Girraween National Park - Pyramid

We wanted to explore somewhere new, so we made a detour to Gibraltar National Park.  Unfortunately, the Raspberry Lookout was completely in the clouds. The short walks to waterfalls ended up being very similar to the scenery we’re used to in the National Parks around Brisbane . I’m not convinced it’s worth the extra kilometres, although the combo forest and waterfalls felt like a good choice during a rainy day and it was nice to see pretty-faced wallabies that are common in this region.

Gibraltar National Park - Pretty Face Wallaby

The second time we drove this road, we stopped at Boonoo Boonoo National Park for a short stroll to the falls and around the rock pools. If you’re patient, you may even wait for the sunset at the Platypus Hole to try to spot a platypus . But platypuses are shy creatures and, although we met a couple who said they spotted one, we weren’t as lucky as them. It’s one of the hardest iconic Australian animals to encounter in the wild .

Boonoo Boonoo NP - Platypus hole 02

If you’re travelling at the start of the year, you may want to check out if the sunflowers are blooming in the Darling Downs  for a photogenic stop. There are some fields close to Warwick.
