George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic at Kentish Town Forum.

George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic review – fabulous fusions on farewell tour

Kentish Town Forum, London At 81, Clinton occasionally needs to sit down, but his band more than carry him with musicianship that straddles acid-rock, jazz and more

K een-eyed observers will note that this is not George Clinton’s first farewell tour: he was supposed to quit the road in 2018, which, at the time, he said was “part of a plan” he had conceived several years previously. Said plan has clearly been redrawn. A few weeks shy of his 81st birthday, Clinton is on the stage again, clad in sequinned trousers, a sailor’s hat with a huge eye on it and something that looks like an ancient Egyptian collar made out of holographic material – an outfit that may well constitute George Clinton’s idea of dressing down in a manner befitting his advanced years.

His role in live shows has diminished over time, although it’s still more than you suspect your average octogenarian could muster: when he’s not adding vocal interjections, dancing or beckoning for more applause, he retreats to a seat at the rear of the stage.

Gleefully overstuffed … George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic.

You could never accuse the current incarnation of Parliament-Funkadelic of not compensating. The band is still as gleefully overstaffed as at their 1970s height – at points there are eight vocalists performing at once – and Clinton presides over a kind of barely-controlled chaos: musicians wander on and off stage, swapping instruments and roles. At one point, a singer reappears both wielding a guitar and stripped to his underpants. They sound fantastic, fusing together what are effectively Parliament-Funkadelic’s greatest hits – Up for the Down Stroke, One Nation Under a Groove, Flashlight – into sprawling medleys that devolve into lengthy jams.

These underline what a broad musical universe Clinton’s brand of funk was. Michael Hampton, who was a 17-year-old prodigy, Kidd Funkadelic, when he first joined Clinton in 1975, delivers stinging acid-rock guitar solos. Greg Thomas’s sax and Greg Boyer’s trombone are audibly informed by jazz – during one solo Boyer quotes from John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, and during a lengthy (Not Just) Knee Deep, Thomas leads the audience in a scat-singing call-and-response derived from Cab Calloway.

As always in the P-Funk universe, the sublime happily co-exists with the ridiculous, both on stage and in the audience, where a gentleman who looks like he could conceivably be a bank manager sports a homemade T-shirt bearing the title of Funkadelic’s 1975 song No Head, No Backstage Pass. From his back seat, Clinton wears a broad grin: a patriarch of misrule to the end.

George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic are on tour in the UK until 28 May.

George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic announce 2022 tour

It marks a return from retirement for 80-year-old Clinton

p-funk

George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic have revealed details of a new tour.

The legendary American funk music collective, which was originally formed in 1968, will tour the U.S. across June, July and August. The shows mark a return from retirement for 80-year-old Clinton, who went on a "farewell tour" with Parliament-Funkdadelic back in 2019.

Named after Funkadelic's seminal 1978 album of the same name, check out dates for The One Nation Under a Groove tour below.

Widely considered to be one of the most influential outfits in music, Parliament-Funkadelic (aka P-Funk) spearheaded both psychedelic funk and Afrofuturism on albums including Funkadelic's 'Maggot Brain' and Parlimanent's 'Mothership Connection'. In 1997, Clinton and 15 other members of P-Funk were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .

In January, Parliament-Funkadelic founding member Calvin Simon died aged 79 .

George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic Tease Final Tour, Drop Summer 2023 Dates

George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic Tease Final Tour, Drop Summer 2023 Dates

George Clinton and his Parliament-Funkadelic brethren have released an extensive list of tour dates that will take the crew from coast-to-coast this summer. The run has been dubbed Just For The Funk Of It! Final Tour?!? and arrives after Clinton’s most recent so-called farewell jaunt last summer.

The funk icons run will commence on July 27 in Reno, Nev., before following up the next evening with a show in Napa, Calif., where the ensemble is expected to participate in the Blue Note Jazz Festival. Next, they will pick up a pair of Pacific Northwest dates slated for Portland, Ore., and Seattle before moving on to the middle of the country.

In continuation of the impending summer tour, the bandleader and his team of collaborators will take stands in Oklahoma and Texas in addition to an August 8 performance in Atlanta. Ensuing gigs in North Carolina will set up the group’s arrival in Boston on August 17.

Next, the crew is scheduled to play a show in Port Chester, N.Y. Then, they’ll return to the road on August 19, trekking over to Montclair, N.J., up until the time arrives for their show in Mashantucket, Conn., a few short days later, on August 20.

The so-called, Just For The Funk Of It! Final Tour?!? will take the musicians through Pittsburgh and Cleveland and continues with stops in Indianapolis before the last August date, which will occur in Louisville, Ky. A lone Nov. 25 concert is set to take place in Oakland, Calif., and serves as the band’s last date of this tour.

On the road, Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic will welcome special guests Fishbone, Dumpstaphunk and George Porter Jr., who will join the headliners in select cities.

Despite the tour’s name, it has not been confirmed that this will be the final run of dates for Clinton and the ensemble. The bandleader has a history of taking breaks from the road and embarking on periods of retirement.

George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic have announced a 21-date 2023 tour featuring support from a number of their funkiest colleagues, Fishbone ,  Dumpstaphunk , and  George Porter Jr. of The Meters fame.

Clinton and his ever-evolving P-Funk circus have been saying “farewell” for years. When the aging bandleader first detailed his multi-band One Nation Under A Groove tour in 2019, he billed the nationwide run as his “final” outing. Four years later, he’s still at it—and yes, he’s aware of that loose interpretation of finality: This year, the summer trek is being billed with a self-aware lack of certainty as Just For The Funk of It! Final Tour?!?

On Just for the Funk of It tour, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic coming to NJ

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The upcoming George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic tour will have a little extra star power.

Clinton — whose just-announced Just for the Funk of It Tour hits the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair on Wednesday, May 22 — recently received a star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“It's an honor to receive a star alongside the many notables from the world of entertainment,” said Clinton at the Jan. 19 ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard. “The old fans and new fans who let the music move their souls, you all know who I’m talking about. I’ve always said it’s the people who make the funk.”

The Just for the Funk of It Tour begins May 5 at the Fillmore New Orleans and ends Aug. 31 at the big Fool in Love festival in Los Angeles. The Fool in Love lineup includes Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Kool and the Gang, Lionel Richie, Santana and more.

Tickets for the Wellmont show start at $137 and are on Live Nation presale. They go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23.

Dumpstaphunk is the supporting act in Montclair.

Clinton, 82, received a ceremonial key to the city of Tallahassee, Florida, on Wednesday, Feb. 21, during a city commission meeting there, according to the Tallahassee Democrat .

Clinton, who's lived in Tallahassee for the last 30 years, led the chamber in a “We want the funk” chant afterward.

More: George Clinton honored in Plainfield, Newark: P-Funk founder retraces his roots in big day

Clinton founded the Parliaments as a teenager in the '50s. The P-Funk legacy was developed in a barbershop Clinton owned in Plainfield through the '60s.

In 2022, five blocks of Plainfield Avenue in Plainfield were renamed “Parliament Funkadelic Way” by the city. The area is where Clinton's barbershop, the Silk Palace, stood. The Second Street Youth Center now stands at 2nd Street and Plainfield Avenue.

“(I Wanna) Testify” was the breakthrough hit for the Parliaments in 1967. After becoming Parliament Funkadelic, they eventually landed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic review, Los Angeles: A fabulous farewell from funk great

As his globe-hopping goodbye tour nears its climax, 81-year-old clinton is still causing chaos while enjoying his victory lap, article bookmarked.

Dr Funkenstein has no shoes. Onstage at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood , Los Angeles, 81-year-old funk trailblazer George Clinton looks so comfortable strolling around in bare feet that he could be in his living room at home. The rest of his outfit is considerably less understated: a sea captain’s hat covered in pearls and bedazzled robes give him the appearance of a human glitter ball, which isn’t entirely inaccurate.

It’s now 66 years since Clinton formed doo-wop group The Parliaments in the back room of a barber shop in Plainfield, New Jersey. After a spell as a staff songwriter for Motown in the Sixties, Clinton went on to give the sound of funk a revolutionary, acid-drenched makeover in the Seventies with his twin groups Parliament and Funkadelic. Incorporating psychedelic jazz, Detroit punk and Jimi Hendrix-style guitar pyrotechnics, Clinton’s brand of P-Funk produced a string of huge hits that continue to be heavily sampled by pop and hip-hop producers to this day. Meanwhile, his bands’ theatrical, science fiction-influenced live shows became the stuff of legend. The P-Funk Mothership, a UFO stage prop used in stadium concerts during the Seventies, is now preserved for posterity at Washington DC’s Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

There may not be a shiny metallic spaceship on stage with him on this farewell tour, but Clinton still takes evident delight in delivering the unexpected. He first appears onstage well before his bands do, sneaking out to surprise support act Blu Eye Extinction’s soprano and keyboardist Constance Hauman. When Clinton next appears, his eight-piece backing band are in full swing and he’s leading out an equal number of backing singers like a P-Funk Pied Piper. This vast, sprawling band produces a kind of chaos onstage: musicians switch instruments with casual insouciance, while at times there literally don’t seem to be enough working microphones to pass around all the vocalists.

The maelstrom of music that flows forth from this collective is thrilling, and the audience is soon up on its feet doing their best to raise the roof of the 6,000-seater venue. Clinton himself is sometimes overwhelmed by it all, taking moments to sit and spin on a short black office chair placed at centre stage, but his broad grin of pride and delight remains a constant.

Many of the band members are second or even third-generation Parliament-Funkadelic musicians. Guitarist Garrett Shider, wearing a pair of silver angel wings, takes centre stage during an early high point of the set to remind the audience: “We are still… one nation under a groove.” His father Garry Shider was the longtime diaper-wearing musical director of Parliament-Funkadelic who died of cancer in 2010.

Other musicians have been with Clinton even longer. The band leader still refers to guitarist Michael Hampton as “Kidd Funkadelic” even now he’s reached the venerable age of 65. Hampton first joined up in 1974, replacing the legendary Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel after he was arrested for drug possession and assaulting an airline stewardess. Hampton first impressed Clinton by reproducing Hazel’s mind-altering “Maggot Brain” solo note-for-note, and he has a similar impact tonight by providing several face-melting solos of his own.

  • John Fogerty review, Los Angeles: Proof Creedence Clearwater Revival have as many hits as The Beatles
  • The Rolling Stones review, Los Angeles: How is it possible that they’re still in their prime?

With just three more dates left on Clinton’s farewell tour, this may well be his last ever stand in Los Angeles. He says so long in style: an utterly triumphant version of 1975’s “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)” bleeds into a brief reprise of “Get Off Your Ass and Jam” and a delirious rendition of 1982’s “Atomic Dog”. The crowd exalts. We wanted the funk, we needed the funk, and just as he’s been doing for a lifetime, George Clinton gave up the funk.

George Clinton Details Final Tour With Parliament-Funkadelic

By Kory Grow

After five decades of life on tour buses and Motherships, George Clinton is ready to retire from the road. The U.S. dates of his long goodbye, which he’s dubbed the One Nation Under a Groove Tour, will kick off this spring and run through August.

“It’s coming right on time,” Clinton tells Rolling Stone , saying the announcement is part of a plan he conceived a few years ago. It’s the next step after releasing his 2014 memoir, Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You? as well as Funkadelic ‘s 2014 album, First Ya Gotta Shake the Gate and Parliament ‘s 2018 album, Medicaid Fraud Dogg .

“I would love to keep on doing this but I’ll be 78 in a few more months,” he says. “Even though I feel like I’m just getting started, the reality is the group needs to go ahead and keep it going. We’ve got a new vibe in the band, and they’ve been carrying it for the last three years. I’ve been up there representing for people, but they’ve actually been turning the place out. And we’ve been selling out for the last five years, every night.”

The tour, which officially kicks off after Memorial Day weekend (though Clinton is playing some farewell tour dates beforehand), will variously feature openers Galactic, Dumpstaphunk, Fishbone and Miss Velvet and the Blue Wolf. Tickets for most shows go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time. Pre-sales will start on February 7th; more information is available at Clinton’s website .

The Parliament-Funkadelic band features several musicians who have been in the lineup for the last decade, as well as a handful — trumpeter Bennie Cowan, saxophonist Greg Thomas, bassist Lige Curry and guitarist Blackbird McKnight — who have been with the group for 30 years or longer. It also features many of Clinton’s descendants.

The tour’s title recalls both the 1978 album, One Nation Under a Groove , and blockbuster single of the same name. Clinton says the song’s message of unity is just as important today as it was when he wrote it. “Funk to me was just that groove that united everything,” he says. “So you could be funky no matter what kind of music you played. There’s a funk element somewhere that can be put into it. And the idea of one nation with everybody together [applies to] not only one nation, but one planet.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

The tour, created by Universal Attractions Agency, coincides with Clinton receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys at a special ceremony on May 11th. It’s an honor that means a lot to him, since it’s a chance for him to recognize the dozens of P-Funk musicians who’ve played with him over the years. “It’s never been about me or no particular thing,” Clinton says. “The whole truth has always been what it’s about. As I’m getting ready to get a lifetime achievement award and all of that, there’s so many people that’s been in the band, it’s hard to even pick who all the people are. So people won’t get to see a lot of people, but still that award will belong to everybody that’s participated in making the P-Funk what it is. It will be for all the people that’s ever been through the P-Funk army.”

Good show. Me, wifey and friend had a pretty good time. I did have an issue with the flow of the show. No opening act that "opened" the show. No introduction for Clinton and the rapper and r&b singer in the middle of the show really threw the vibe off and people started to leave. It took a little time to get back on vibe but it ended up well. Clinton should have had them as opening acts, and let the band play during intermission. But all and all I finally had a (watered down) Clinton experience and I was overall satisfied.

A college is hosting a sold-out Taylor Swift masterclass for parents ahead of the star's UK tour

  • A UK college is running a crash course on all things Taylor Swift ahead of her UK tour.
  • The one-day course is aimed at parents and plus ones of Swifties.
  • The college says the course will provide "the full Love Story on all things Eras Tour."

Insider Today

A college in Scotland is running a crash course on all things Taylor Swift ahead of the pop star's UK leg of her Eras Tour .

The one-day course held by Glasgow Clyde College is aimed at parents and plus-ones of Swifties set to attend the singer's three-night stopover in Edinburgh.

The college says the course will provide "the full Love Story on all things Eras Tour to help them have the best night of their lives."

"From set lists and crowd chants to need-to-know information on each Era, the course, which is being delivered by a Taylor Swift expert, will give members of the public a whistle-stop lesson that'll leave them ready for the gig," the college says on its website.

The Eras Tour, which has already become the highest-grossing tour of all time, pays tribute to Swift's first 10 studio albums and the unique styles and staging that accompanied them.

The release of the singer's 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department," in April could mean that the setlist will change from previous legs of the tour, however — but the college seems likely to have that covered.

Glasgow Clyde College assistant principal Robert Anderson told local media outlet The Scotsman : "Taylor mania doesn't seem to be slowing anytime soon, and we expect it'll reach its peak here in Scotland in June. We understand that not everyone will be up to speed on all things Taylor and might not get the full Eras experience," he said.

Related stories

"That's why we created this masterclass - to prepare those who'll be heading along to the gig with their superfan kids, friends or partners to ensure they have just as memorable a time," he continued. "Taylor's gigs are known for being so well crafted, and unless you're a fan yourself, you might miss some of the iconic moments."

The course is due to be held on May 7, one month before Swift kicks off her UK tour.

European cities could benefit from Swift's tour

Swift is taking her Eras Tour to 18 European cities this summer , and many are hoping Swifties will splash the cash as they arrive.

The tour has already boosted the US, Singaporean, and Australian economies, with eager fans spending big on things like travel, accommodation, and merchandise.

While the UK and the rest of Europe have yet to feel the full effect of Swift's presence, the price of hotels and short-term rental homes across Scotland have shot up as opportunistic hoteliers and rental hosts have sought to take advantage of increased demand for accommodation.

Around 200,000 people are expected to attend across the star's three performances at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.

Marc Crothall, chief executive of the Scottish Tourism Alliance, told Business Insider that there would be a "ripple effect" from the shows that will be felt across Scotland.

"We're a small country. It's important that those who are coming from further afield, don't just go straight back to where they came from," he said, adding that they would hopefully go and visit some other parts of Scotland.

Travis Scott announces ‘Utopia: Circus Maximus’ UK and European tour

The dates include a slot at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Travis Scott performs during the 66th GRAMMY Awards at Crypto.com Arena on February 04, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

Travis Scott has announced details of a new UK and European tour. Find ticket details below.

  • READ MORE: Travis Scott – ‘Utopia’ review: lofty concept, shaky execution

Titled the ‘Utopia: Circus Maximus tour’, the new run of tour dates see the rapper head across the pond to celebrate the release of his record-breaking album ‘Utopia’ , and arrives on the heels of his sold-out run of shows across North America.

Set to take place across this summer, the dates kick off with an opening night at the GelreDome venue in Arnhem on June 28, before continuing throughout July with stops in Krakow (2), Zurich (4), Nice (6) and Antwerk (9).

From there, two UK shows are lined-up – one of which is set at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and will mark his largest UK headline show to date. The London show is scheduled for July 11, and will be followed by a stop at the new Co-Op Live arena in Manchester two nights later (July 23).

The shows wrap up with five more shows across Europe, including stops in Prague, Cologne, Milan and Hamburg. The last show of the tour will take place at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on July 27.

Tickets will go on sale Friday (May 10) at 10am local time. Visit here to buy tickets and check out a full list of dates below.

Travis Scott performs at the Mercedes-Benz all new G-Class Los Angeles star-studded world premiere held at Franklin Canyon Park on April 23, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California.

Travis Scott’s ‘Utopia’ UK and European tour dates are:

Recommended.

JUNE 28 – Netherlands, Arnhem @ GelreDome

JULY 2 – Poland, Krakow @ TAURON Arena 4 – Switzerland, Zurich @ Hallenstadion 6 –France, Nice @ Allianz Riviera 9 – Belgium, Antwerp @ Sportpaleis 11 – UK, London @ Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 13 – UK, Manchester  @ Co-op Live 16 –Germany, Hamburg @ Barclays Arena 18 – Czech Republic, Prague @ O2 Arena 20 – Germany, Cologne @ RheinEnergieSTADION 23 – Italy, Milan @ Ippodromo SNAI La Maura 27 – Germany, Frankfurt @ Deutsche Bank Park

‘Utopia’ arrived last year and soon became the biggest-selling hip-hop release of 2022 – spending four weeks at the top of the Billboard Top 200 and gathering over 50 billion streams globally. It was also named as the most streamed album in its first week in 2023 by Spotify, and Apple Music confirmed the biggest first-day streams of an album in 2023.

It was given a three-star review by NME , who described it as having a “lofty concept”, but “shaky execution”.

“By going back to the sound of his early work, Scott steps back into the gargantuan shadow of his mentor, Kanye West,” it read. “Whereas ‘Astroworld’ was the perfect theme for Scott’s music – we’re going to a theme park! – in trying to navigate a lofty concept like finding utopia, his ambitions have led him back to someone who was far more formidable at it.”

In more recent news, at the start of the year the rapper joined forces with Playboi Carti at the 2024 Grammys, coming together to deliver a destructive performance of ‘Fein’ .
