Applying for a Germany Schengen Visa from India

Indian nationals and nationals of other countries legally residing in India can apply for a visa to go to Germany in India.

Applications will be submitted to VFS Global who has offices located across India. The Indian Embassy makes the decision as to whether to approve visa applications. Your application will be sent to the embassy in whose jurisdiction your place of residence lies:

Visa applications should be handed in at least 15 days ahead of your desired travel time. It is possible to apply for your Schengen visa up to 6 months in advance of your journey.

The processing time for short-term visa applications will usually take about 15 days. It is your responsibility to apply well in advance of your trip, so you have time to get the visa.

Types of Schengen visas offered at the Embassy Of Germany in India

The type of visa you will apply for will depend on why you wish to go to Germany. There are 3 types of visas available:

• Schengen “C” visa (short-stay) – for a holiday or business trip etc for up to 90 days
• National “D” visa (long-stay) – to attend university, work or join a family in Germany etc for over 90 days. Please visit VFS Global’s website for more information about this type of visa
• Airport Transit “A” visa   –  if you are transiting through a German airport on the way to another country

How Can I Apply for a Schengen Visa from VFS Global in India

Embassies in India have outsourced the receipt of visa applications to VFS Global. There are 7 steps to follow if you want to apply for a visa for Germany:

• Step 1 – Identify your visa type
• Step 2 – Begin your application
• Step 3 – Book an appointment
• Step 4 – Pay your fees
• Step 5 – Visit a Visa Application Center
• Step 6 – Track your application
• Step 7 – Collect your passport

You will be directed to the step-by-step guide. Find your location and click on the relevant link:

You will then be able to find out all the information you need to apply for your visa. For example, visa fees, documents required etc:

Return to the step-by-step guide and under “step 2” click on the link for the visa application form:

You will be directed to the VIDEX system where you can complete your application form:

Once completed, print off the following documents:

• Visa application form
• Barcode page
• Additional information form

Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application centre is generally free and can be done yourself. However, if you are running short of time or not sure which consulate to apply to or have no idea on how to get this done yourself then not to worry, we will make the appointment for you for a small service fee!

Booking a visa appointment using our services is pretty simple! All you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

• Submit the appointment details, the visa you are applying for, consulate you need the appointment for, the country you need the appointment IN and make the payment

Fees are paid in Indian Rupees and can change due to currency fluctuations.

Along with the visa fees, there is a service charge per visa application. You should check with VFS Global which fees apply at which office:

• VFS Logistics INR 1602/- (short-term visas)
• VFS Logistics INR 848/- (long-term visas – Bangalore)
• VFS Logistics INR 1224/- (If fingerprints have been given within the last 59 months)
• Service charge of INR 997/- (D-Visa Stamping – Bangalore)
• Optional Service Courier INR 502/-
• Optional Service SMS INR 107/-
• Optional Service Premium Lounge INR 2374/- (New Delhi) / INR 2261/-(Kolkata)

(All VFS’s service charges are inclusive of Goods & Service Tax –SGST @ 9% and CGST@ 9%)

Method of payment:

• Demand Draft (in favor of VFS Global Services Pvt. Ltd)
• Visa, Master Card and Rupay

You should check the acceptable methods of payment with the VFS office you are dealing with.

On the day of your appointment:

• Arrive early
• Dress smartly
• Take your ID, visa application form and supporting documents

The visa officer will check your application and documents and take your fingerprints and photograph (biometrics).

They may ask you questions about your application. All you have to do is answer the questions honestly.

Typical questions include:

• What do you know about Germany?
• Do you have a planned itinerary?
• Who are you going with?
• What do you do in India?

Once your application has been submitted to VFS Global, you can track its progress. Go to “step 6 – track your application” under VFS Global’s step-by-step guide:

Key in your reference number and last name:

After a visa application decision has been made, you can pick up your passport from VFS Global or have your documents returned to you by courier for an additional fee.

If you choose to collect your passport in person, you need to take the following documents:

• Photocopy of  Govt. ID card
• Application receipt

The decision will be either:

• Approved – your visa will be inside your passport
• Rejected – this would have been for a specific reason. You can submit a new application or appeal the decision within 1 month. See the embassy website for more information

Common rejection reasons include:

• Passport not valid for 3 months after trip – your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your trip. If not, you need to get a new one before applying for your visa
• You do not have a legal right to live in India – to apply for a visa for Germany, you must be either a citizen or have the legal right to live in India
• Travel insurance insufficient – your travel insurance must cover at least 30,000 Euros (see below for full details)
• Pay slips not submitted – if you are employed, you need to prove this by providing your pay slips

Supporting documents

You can find what supporting documents are required on the embassy’s website. There are checklists for you to refer to. Make sure you know what the requirements are for the visa you are applying for because they are different for each type of visa.

You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!

Documents include:

• Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years and with at least 3 months validity after the scheduled return; passports with observations regarding the front data page cannot be accepted) with at least two empty pages
• Application form & declarations duly signed
• Personal covering letter with entire travel plan (itinerary)
• Minors: – If travelling unaccompanied by parent(s), consent letter signed by both parents & applicant; f orm signed by both parents; Copy of the parent(s)’ passports data page
• Leave letter of your company (if employed); No-objection certificate of school or university (if student);
• Round trip flight reservation , rail tickets, etc.
• Proof of accommodation such as a confirmed hotel reservation  for your entire stay in the Schengen area
• Travel health insurance  – to cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death. T he insurance shall be valid throughout the territory of the Schengen States and cover the entire period of the person’s intended stay or transit. The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30,000
• 1 copy of your passport’s data page (A4 size copy)
• Proof of financial status: If employed : Payslips of the past three months / employment contract; If self-employed : Certificate of Proprietorship or other proof of ownership (proof of land title, proof of income from agriculture (sales form) etc.)
• P ersonal original bank statement of the past three months as proof of sufficient funds ; Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Form 16 (Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary)
• Proof of civil status: Marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, ration card ( if applicable)
• 2  passport photographs according to biometric specifications, not older than 6 months
• Invitation letter from the business partner in Germany in English or German

If you’re planning to obtain your flight reservation for visa without paying for the ticket, all you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

• Visit the Visa Reservation website to choose the right package
•  Submit the travel details and make the payment online
• Receive flight itinerary in email

COVID REGULATIONS

As of Saturday, June 11, 2022, all COVID-19 entry restrictions to Germany will be provisionally lifted. From this date, entries to Germany will again be permitted for all travel purposes (including tourism and visiting trips). For entry into Germany, proof of vaccination, proof of convalescence or proof of testing is no longer required.

Always check for up-to-date entry requirements before you travel on the embassy’s website.

How to apply for a Schengen tourist visa from India (with sample letters)

Before moving to Germany for work, I visited on a tourist visa (Schengen visa - Type C) twice from India. In guide, I'll write about how to apply for a German tourist visa and what you need to do to visit your friends or family, or go on a joy trip across Germany.

Applying for the visa

What is the difference between tourist visa and a visit to friends or family visa.

They are essentially the same. The documents you require for these visa's can differ. If you are visiting your friends or family, you should submit a document for sponsorship ( Verpflichtungserklärung ). See below for information on what it is and how to get it.

Where to apply for your Schengen tourist visa

You must send in the application to German Consulate or Embassy which is responsible for your area of residence. For tourist visa,  VFS  handles the application process. See which consulates are more likely to reject your schengen visa application.

You must apply at  New Delhi  if you live in Haryana Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Union Territories of Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, NCT of Delhi, Lakshadweep including Minicoy and Amini.

You must apply at  Chennai  if you live in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & Pondicherry

You must apply at  Mumbai  if you live in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Daman and Diu

You must apply at  Bangalore  if you live in Karnataka and Kerala

You must apply at  Kolkata  if you live in West Bengal,  Jharkhand, Orissa, Assam, Bihar, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh

For example, if you are from Andhra Pradesh, you must apply at the VFS center in Chennai.

Note: If you are staying in multiple Schengen countries, you must apply at the country's VFS / Consulate / Embassy where you will stay for the longer period.

What are the required documents for a Schengen Visa?

Here is the list of documents that you should submit. You can see the up to date information  here .

Valid passport

Must be issued within last 10 years

With at least 3 months validity after the scheduled return

With at least 2 empty pages

Must not have observations on the front page

Must provide  1 copy  of your passport’s data page (A4 size copy)

2 passport pictures according to  biometric specifications , not older than 6 months

Application form & declarations duly signed  (see section below on how to fill the form)

Personal covering letter explaining the purpose of your visit

Leave letter of your company (if you are employed)

No-objection certificate of school or university (if you are a student)

Financial proof:

Proof of financial status:

If  employed : Payslips of the last three months / employment contract/Appointment letter

If  self-employed :

Certificate of Proprietorship or other proof of ownership (proof of land title, proof of income from agriculture (sales form) etc.)

(or) Personal bank statement of the last three months with sufficient funds

(or) Last three years Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Form 16 (Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary)

Accomodation proof:

Proof of accommodation for your entire stay in the Schengen area - this is where you will stay during your trip. Hotel bookings, Airbnb, etc., are valid. You can reserve bookings with cancellations, if you prefer.

Flight reservation, (rail tickets, others for travel within Schengen)

Travel health insurance (refer  here  to find out about the travel health insurances accepted)

Proof of civil status: Marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, ration card if applicable

If you are invited by someone (your children, partner, friend, etc), they should provide additional proof.

Proof of sufficient funds for the visit:

If sponsored:  Verpflichtungserklärung  (original formal obligation letter) of your sponsor (read below)

Invitation Letter form the inviting person  (you don't need this if you do not have anyone inviting you)

Inviting Person: Passport copy and Resident Permit Copy (daughter and son in law or son and daughter in law)

If self-sponsored: Personal bank statements of the last 3 months with sufficient funds

If you are a minor or accompanying a minor:

For Minors:

Application form and declarations signed by both parents

Consent letter signed by both parents.

Clear Copy of the parent(s)’ passports data page

Birth certificate of the Minor

Filling out the Application Form

Once you have chosen which Consulate or Embassy to apply, you must fill in the  application form . Most of the application form requires your personal information and purpose of travel. When filling the form, use the information from your passport as reference.

I'll write down explanations of a few things that might be confusing.

Is your residence in a country other than that of your current nationality? If you're an Indian citizen living in India, choose  yes .

Identification papers and travel documents is  your passport . Issued by is your passport office, you can find this on the first few pages of your passport. My passport says Regional Passport Office, Chennai.

Under travel data, you will see questions about your purpose of visit.

Main purpose(s) of the journey: Choose Tourism, or Visit of family or friends

Member state of first entry: Germany Unless your first entry - where you enter EU and exit - is different. Your connecting flight does not matter. This is where you first leave the airport of a country. If your flight is from Chennai to Dubai to Germany, choose  Germany . If your flight is from Chennai to Paris to Germany, choose  Germany . If your flight is from Chennai to Paris, you exit the airport and take the train / car / bus to Germany, choose France.

Main travel destination(s): Choose the country where you will stay the maximum number of days.

Number of entries requested: Single entry or multiple entry. Single entry means you can enter the Schengen states only once until you leave. Multiple entries allow you to leave Schengen states and come back within the validity of your tourist visa.

Intended date of arrival in the Schengen area: When your flight will reach a Schengen state

Intended date of departure from the Schengen area: When you plan to leave the Schengen states

Duration of the intended stay or transit (number of days): Use a  days calculator .  This is important.  Your visa is most likely granted only for the duration you specify. Include both the start & end date in your calculation.

Have you been issued with a Schengen visa within the last three years? Specify when if you have already gotten a Schengen visa.

Entry permit for the final country of destination, where applicable: fill this if you plan to enter your destination through a different Schengen state

Finding an appointment at VFS

Booking an appointment at VFS can be tricky. Most of the times that I have looked at it, there are no appointments. What helped me was constantly refreshing at different times during the day and eventually finding one.

Click on "Start new booking"

Book schengen visa appointment at VFS

Choose "Visa application center" at your city or the city where you are supposed to apply.

Choose "Schengen visa" as the appointment category.

Choose "tourist" or "visit (family & friends)" depending on your purpose of visit

Enter your details as it is in your application form & passport.

Choose a date & time

Date & time for the VFS appointment

You  don't  need premium services. Continue with the form and you will receive a confirmation letter. You need to take a  print out  of this to your appointment.

VFS Appointment Day

Go to your appointment 15 minutes early

Show your appointment confirmation printout at the entrance, there is a security check

Once you are done, get a  token number  for your appointment

Wait till your number is called or is on your screen

Go to the case worker at the counter, provide documents including the passport from the checklist

Once all documents are submitted and are ok, you will need to submit your biometrics

Pay the fees by cash or card, get confirmation of your application

Optional service is delivery of your passports. The delivery address can be different from the passport address.

Tracking your application

Once it is submitted, you will receive a tracking number for your application by SMS / Email. You can track it  here .

You will see a blue line text under the submit button that shows the status of your application.

Receiving the passport back

If you chose the courier service, your passport will be delivered to the address you provided. If not, you have to go back to the VFS center. Take your confirmation of the application and an ID card.

Approved Visa

Once you get the passport back, check the pages. You should see a visa printed with your details. Congratulations!  Ensure that the details are correct!

My Schengen Tourist Visa from India

Rejected Visa

If your visa has been rejected, you will receive a letter with your passport that has the reasons for your rejection. Most likely cause is the lack of proper documentation. You will have 30 days to appeal back to the consulate / embassy.

How long is the tourist visa valid for? With a tourist (short-stay) visa, you can stay in Germany for up to 90 days within a period of 180 days. It is also called a "Schengen visa".

What is the cost of a Schengen visa?

This is per person.

Can I visit other countries in Schengen area?

Yes, you are allowed to visit other Schengen countries like Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

If you visit other Schengen countries, you do not need a separate visa. The number of days you spend in any of these countries count towards your total allowance of days you are allowed to stay in Schengen area (see duration of stay below).

What is an Verpflichtungserklärung?

If someone invites you to Germany for a short time, they can submit a declaration of commitment for you. This is especially useful if you cannot pay for the cost of your stay in Germany by yourself. The declaration of commitment is generally recognised by German missions abroad for up to 6 months after it has been issued.

Where to get the Verpflichtungserklärung?

You can request this sponsorship letter at your Ausländerbehörde . For Berlin, you will find appointments and information  here .

Can I get a single Verpflichtungserklärung for multiple people?

Yes, you can invite partners / children of the same family in the same application.

What does a Verpflichtungserklärung cost?

It costs 29€ and you can pay by cash / card at the Ausländerbehörde.

How early can I apply for the visa?

The earliest you can apply is 6 months before your trip starts.

Can I leave the Schengen area and come back?

This depends on your visa. Check your visa on your passport to see if multiple entries are allowed. Next to "Number of entries", it should say " MULT ".

What does the duration of stay mean?

It indicates how long you are allowed to stay in the schengen area within 180 days. If it says 50, then you are allowed to stay 50 days in Schengen area in the 180 day period.

What does the valid from and to mean?

It indicates when you can enter and when you must leave the Schengen area.

What does "Erwerbstätigkeit nicht gestattet" mean?

• Company Cover Letter

For stays exceeding 30 days, provide a detailed business meeting schedule. If you have additional appointments in the Schengen area, submit a signed invitation letter from your business partner. The letter should be on the company letterhead, stating the purpose of travel, itinerary, and your personal details.

2. National Visa(Long Stay)

For stays in Germany beyond 90 days, opt for a German National visa, often called "long-term" or "D visa." It is tailored for extended stays, exceeding the typical 90-day limit, catering to specific, legally-defined purposes.

A. Student Visa

Upon admission to a German university or preparatory college (Studienkolleg), you can apply for a study visa. It's recommended to secure university admission promptly. During your studies, you have the option to take part-time student jobs, enabling you to work up to 20 hours per week to cover expenses.

Processing Time for a Germany Student Visa: 1 to 3 Months

Stay Duration: Up to 1 Year

Documents Required for Germany Student Visa:

• Completed and signed application with declaration as per Section 54 Residence Act.
• One recent biometric passport photo.
• Valid passport with at least 3 months beyond the intended stay, 2 blank pages, and issued in the last 10 years.
• U.S. residence permit (Visa, Green Card, or U.S. passport).
• Proof of address (driver’s license, utility bill, or lease).
• Admission confirmation to the study course or preparatory college with language information.
• For preparatory language course or internship: acceptance confirmation.
• Qualification certificates and transcripts for academic qualifications.
• Curriculum vitae.
• Letter of motivation.
• Proof of language skills (at least B2 if no preparatory language course).
• Proof of financial means (934.00 EUR per month for one year or a blocked account).
• Adequate health insurance coverage meeting EU standards for the entire Schengen area (min. 30,000 EUR).

B. Work Visa

This visa allows skilled individuals with vocational training or a recognized university degree to stay in Germany for up to six months. They can search for a job that aligns with their qualifications. If they find a job within six months, they can apply for a residence permit at the Immigration Office without leaving. While looking for employment, they can only engage in trial work for up to 10 hours per week and are not allowed regular employment.

Processing Time for a Germany Work Visa: 1 to 3 Months

Documents Required for Germany Work Visa:

• Completed and signed application with a declaration according to Section 54 Residence Act.
• Valid passport with a minimum validity of 3 months beyond the intended stay, at least 2 blank pages, and issued within the last 10 years.
• U.S. residence permit (e.g., Visa, Green Card, U.S. passport).
• Proof of address (e.g., valid driver’s license, utility bill, lease).
• Qualification proof: i. Vocational training certificate or German university degree or foreign university degree with recognition. ii. Transcript required if the degree doesn't detail the courses studied.
• Proof of recognition of the qualification
• German language skills proof at B1 level for recognized vocational training.
• Tabular CV indicating professional experience.
• Letter of motivation for seeking employment.
• Proof of adequate financial means (at least 1,027.00 EUR per month for 6 months).
• Proof of adequate health insurance coverage meeting EU standards for the Schengen area.

C. Research Visa

You can apply for a Germany research visa if you have a doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from a German or foreign university that allows entry into doctoral programs. This category also covers doctoral students from foreign universities wanting to visit Germany for research.

Processing Time for a Germany Research Visa: 1 to 3 Months

Documents Required for Germany Research Visa:

• Completed and signed application with a declaration under Section 54 Residence Act.
• Signed passport meeting validity requirements and containing at least 2 blank pages, issued within the past 10 years.
• Proof of address (e.g., driver’s license, utility bill, lease).
• Hosting agreement or contract with a German research institute, signed by both parties.
• Proof of qualification: either a doctoral degree or a university degree allowing access to doctorate programs (include transcript if degree does not specify courses).
• If the research institution is not publicly funded: declaration of assumption of costs related to the researcher's stay.
• Proof of adequate financial means (minimum 1,027.00 EUR per month), can be shown through the admission agreement or relevant contract.
• Proof of housing in Germany, including full address (rental agreement, hotel reservation, or invitation letter for private accommodation with inviting person's details).
• Proof of adequate health insurance coverage, either through statutory health insurance or additional private (travel) health insurance meeting EU standards (minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR) until statutory health insurance takes effect. Ensure coverage for a long-term or permanent stay.

D. Family Reunion Visa

You need a Family reunion visa if you're marrying or planning to marry a German citizen and/or you're a parent of a German minor child seeking permanent residency in Germany. After document submission, processing takes up to 12 weeks. Upon approval, you get a 90-day national visa and a final residence permit for an extended stay. 

Processing Time for a Germany Family Reunion Visa: 1 to 3 Months

Documents Required for Germany Family Reunion Visa:

• Completed and signed application with Section 54 Residence Act declaration.
• Signed passport with at least 3 months validity beyond the intended stay, 2 blank pages, and issued within the past 10 years.
• For family reunion with a spouse: Marriage certificate or notice of intended marriage in Germany.
• For family reunion with a German minor child: Birth certificate of the child.
• Proof of German language skills (at least level A1) when joining a spouse or fiancé(e).
• Supporting letter from the spouse or child's parent for joint residence in Germany.
• Additional documents may be needed for a fiancé(e) visa.
• Passport's data page of the spouse/fiancé(e)/minor child.
• Registration in Germany ("Meldebescheinigung") of the spouse/fiancé(e)/minor child.
• Proof of adequate health insurance coverage for entry into the Schengen area.

3. Airport Transit Visa

Indian nationals typically need an airport transit visa for the Schengen area, which permits a brief stopover at an international airport without exiting the transit area or staying overnight in a hotel. If you plan to leave the international transit area, such as for connecting flights at another airport to exit the Schengen area, it is advisable to apply for a regular Schengen visa.

Processing Time for a Germany Transit Visa: 15 to 21 Days

Stay Duration: Up to 24 hours

Documents Required for Germany Transit Visa:

• Fully completed and signed Schengen visa application form, using the VIDEX website for online submission. Print and submit all pages, including barcodes.
• Valid passport issued within the last 10 years, with a minimum of 3 months' validity beyond the scheduled return, and at least two empty pages.
• Copy of the biometric & address page of the passport (DIN A4).
• Minimum 1 biometric passport picture (35x45mm white background, 70%-80% face coverage), not older than six months.
• Personal covering letter.
• Flight reservation to the final destination (if one way) or return ticket if residing in India.
• Copy of the valid visa/residence permit for the final destination if applicable.
• Additional documents for minor applicants, including signed forms by both parents, passport copies of both parents, and specific requirements if only one parent submits the application.
• Additional documents desired by the applicant (not mentioned on the checklist) can be submitted.
• If someone other than the applicant is submitting the application, a signed authorization letter and a copy of the passport of the person submitting the application are required.

European Union adopts more favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians

On 18 April 2024, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the Visa Code that applied to date. This new visa ‘cascade’ regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history, if the passport validity allows. 

According to the newly adopted visa “cascade” regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with facilitation of people-to-people contacts being of key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU. 

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

• How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

• What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

• Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

• Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

• How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

• Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”

New Schengen visa rules for Indians: This is how you can get multi entry two-year visa for 29 European countries

Under the cascade regime, you can stay in switzerland, amsterdam, and/ or any other european countries such as austria, hungary, poland, belgium, germany, france, among others, on a 2 year visa with multiple entry option..

With the European Union (EU) adopting favourable  Schengen visa rules for Indians, the strength of Indian passports is arguably set to grow with travel to 29 European countries getting seamless and hassle-free.

Incidentally, Indian passports are  currently ranked at 85 , as per Henley Passport Index for 2024 that ranks 199 nations based on the strength of their passports. Our neighbouring country Pakistan is ranked at 106, while Bangladesh at 102.

Under the  new Schengen visa regime , Indians will now be able to enter any of these European countries multiple times for two years, which is further extendable by 5 years, and stay there like visa-free nationals.

This is a stark departure from the current practice. Until now, when Indians intend to travel to one or more European countries, they are meant to apply for the much sought-after Schengen visa, which is given for a maximum of three months.

But now, under the cascade regime -- guess what? You can stay in Switzerland, Amsterdam, and/ or any other European countries such as Austria, Hungary, Poland, Belgium, Germany, France, among others, for as long as two years, which is extendable, without any hiccups.

According to a  report in Aug 2023, Scandinavian regions in Europe saw a substantial growth of 140 percent as of August 2023 in comparison to pre-COVID levels in 2020, according to insights from MakeMyTrip.

Let us understand how this will work:

How will this work?

This is primarily beneficial for those Indians who frequently travel to one or more European countries. And if you have travelled to Europe on a Schengen visa for two times in the past three years, then you are eligible for this new visa category ‘cascade regime’ under which you will be given two-year multi entry visa and you can travel and stay in any of these countries just like an individual who does not require a visa to be there.

But the only catch is that you won’t be allowed to work and earn there like a local citizen.

This two-year visa will then be followed by a five-year visa so long as the passport has sufficient validity. For example, if the passport is set to expire three years later, then the visa seeker won’t be able to get the Schengen visa extended by five years. Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work.

5-year post-study visa in France

This Schengen move is testimony to the growing partnership between Europe and India. Last year, France also eased its visa rules for inbound Indian students.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited France in July 2023, the European nation extended a five-year post-study visa to Indian students who had completed their master's degree there.

Earlier, Indians were given two-year work visas after completing their master's degree.

Your application documents should be in German or English. In case the document is in any other language, kindly provide a translation as well.

The documents submitted and all information given in your application form must be genuine and accurate. Falsified or untrue documents will result in the rejection of the visa application. Deception about the purpose of stay will also lead to the rejection of the visa application.

The submission of the documents does not establish a right to the issuance of a visa. In individual cases, the submission of further documents may be required.

Please do not send any documents to the visa office without being requested to do so - especially not before submitting your application. These documents cannot be kept and/or assigned here. Please bring all required documents to the visa interview. In case of subsequent submissions of requested documents, please indicate the transaction number (will be assigned at the time of application), surname, first name and passport number of the applicant.

Health insurance

The German Missions accept Indian travel medical insurances only from Indian travel insurance companies listed here (in alphabetical order).

Biometric photo

Kindly submit photos which meet the biometric photo requirements .

Step 2 – Schedule an appointment

Appointments are booked at the foreign mission responsible for your place of residence or habitual abode. The German missions abroad in India are geographically divided into official districts. Responsibility is based exclusively on the applicant's current main place of residence. Place of birth or nationality are not relevant. You can get an overview of the official districts and the responsible consulate in the consulate finder .

Please make sure you arrive on time for your appointment and have your documents prepared and in order as per the checklist (step 3).

NOTE: Appointments can ONLY be booked via VFS or at the Embassy/Consulate, depending on the visa category; please beware of fraudulent offers of third parties!

Please pay the required amount - always in rupees - upon submission of your visa application.

*Might change without prior notice. Therefore, check the current visa fees the day before your appointment. The visa section might not be able to accept your application with a wrong demand draft!

- The visa fee is to be paid at the end of the visa appointment. - The visa fee is not refundable, even if the visa is rejected. - In some cases, the visa fee might be waived .

Admission to the Visa Sections

Visitors to the Visa Section are not allowed to carry the following devices:

•any form of electronic device (e.g. notebook, mobile phone, camera)

•dangerous objects (in particular knives and weapons)

•bags and luggage, umbrellas

•any other dangerous items

All visitors are allowed to carry only the documents that have been asked for and required by the German Embassy.

Please note that the German Embassy is not in a position to keep in deposit the above-mentioned objects that are not allowed inside the Embassy premises.

Safeguarding personal belongings outside the Embassy premises is the sole responsibility of each applicant!

Step 3 - Processing by the German Mission

The German Mission will examine and decide on your application. The legal requirements are always checked on a case-by-case basis using the available application documents. Depending on the purpose of stay, this review can take from a few working days to several months.

Please keep in mind that this period starts once the application reaches the mission, not VFS. If you were asked for a pending document, the processing time does not start until your application is complete.

Kindly understand that, in the interest of all applicants, we cannot give individual status updates within the below mentioned time. As soon as a decision on the application has been made, you will be contacted by the German Mission.

Standard processing times

- Family reunion (including dependents and intended marriage): 12 weeks - Students (including preparatory (language) courses : 12 weeks - Employment with pre-approval of the Federal Employment Agency, Employment with Hosting Agreement according to Section 18d German Residence Act and Blue Card: 4 weeks - Employment as chef/speciality cook (even with pre-approval): 12 weeks - Employment with pre-approval according to §81a AufenthG: 2 weeks - Recognition of foreign professional qualification/approbation: 12 weeks - Self-Employment (incl. freelancers): 12 weeks - Schengen (short term stays under 90 days): 15 working days

The following applies to queries: For data protection reasons, detailed information can only be provided to the applicant, his/her legal representative or authorized representative in writing. Other inquiries from third parties can unfortunately not be answered.

Verification of Documents

In certain cases, the visa section might initiate a verification of your documents. This concerns all public documents issued by the Indian authorities and work proof documents.

The Attestation or Apostille of Indian documents is not recognized by German authorities and is therefore not required for visa purposes.

The visa section will inform you about the verification either during the procedure via e-mail OR the necessity of verification will be mentioned on the checklist.

Step 4 – Returning the passports

Please check your visa as soon as you receive your passport, and report any errors to us immediately via e-mail. Always mention your passport number, full name and reason for correction!!

Your visa will show your full name, passport number and photo. You can see the approved period of validity of the visa, i.e. the period of time during which you are allowed to enter Germany and may have to apply for a domestic residence permit at the Immigration Office (See 'have a nice trip' section below).

Please be aware that the visa section cannot issue the visa earlier than the starting date of your travel health insurance.
