‘The Simpsons’ Does ‘Star Trek’ During Last Night’s Closing Credits

star trek references in the simpsons

| January 5, 2015 | By: Kayla Iacovino 80 comments so far

After an interplanetary episode of The Simpsons last night, the show ended with some rather familiar closing credits played to the Star Trek: The Original Series closing theme.

The Simpsons do Trek

In last night’s episode of The Simpsons , “The Man Who Came To Be Dinner”, we got our first ever glimpse of Rigel 7, home to big green aliens Kang and Kodos. When the Simpson family mistakes something called “Rocket to Your Doom” for an amusement park ride, they end up on an alien world where the inhabitants try to eat them in a giant fondue. Over the closing credits, we’re treated to the a Simpsonified version of the Star Trek end credits, which includes Marge as a blue Orion slave girl, Homer fighting something resembling the Gorn, Lisa as the Borg Queen, Bart nervously crawling through a Jeffrey’s tube, and more. See how many references you can get. And, feel free to nitpick away… what did they get wrong? Honestly, Bart is clearly supposed to represent Scotty (he’s even holding his hands the way James Doohan would to try and cover up his missing finger), but he is wearing a blue shirt!

Star Trek Book Reviews: “The Way to the Stars” & “The Captain’s Oath”

I LOL’d when they showed Lenny & Carl as the half white/half black duo from Cheron. :)

I like it! But if you noticed, it’s MOSTLY Simpson’s / Original Series styled Star Trek. With the exception of Maggie. ; (

I mean, Lisa.

I liked the Crazy Cat Lady with the “Tribbles” and Millhouse as a Ferengi. I don’t think this episode was our first ever glimpse of Rigel VII though. I think it was in the Avatar parody in one of the Halloween episodes (looking completely different from in this episode).

Anybody knows what was the sign made by the viewer at the cinema at the end?

And don’t take advantage of the question to get funny.

Cuz, everybody here will say I walked into that…and I will laugh no matter what anybody comes up with!; Even if it’s an insult…

Love to see the love. It’s funny that this comes from a Fox show… for a property belonging to a mountain-logo’d company that couldn’t give a tribble’s butt about Trek. (Wherever that is…)

> Anybody knows what was the sign made by the viewer at the cinema at the end?

I believe she was doing a “shush” finger to the lips. In fact when the ending is quiet you can hear it.

Anytime Milhouse appears, I basically see JJ Abrams.

On a completely unrelated note (I’m sure) last night BBC Three screened that episode of American Dad involving the Fast and Furious script with all the hardcore gay sex.

I remember one time at the end of the end credits, someone in the Gracie Films crowd yelled out “SHUT UP!”.

Wouldn’t Database be J.J Abrams?

http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Database

Ah, loved it!

I think Milhouse is supposed to be Quark?

Chris – Fox ran a Family Guy on OJ as he was awaiting sentencing for the robbery/strong arm nonsense that got his butt imprisoned. Stay classy, Fox.

#11. Hee-he.

I love how the Ferengi and Borg Queen crashed the party. They’ll have been some nerd rage that night.

LOL. Cue Dom and Jonboc to decry the “Berman-Trek” elements. And in all honesty, I might have wished they’d kept it pure, myself. But I loved it anyway. :-)

I caught this episode last night and the closing credits, complete with classic Trek theme song, were just great. My favorite pic: Mr. Burns as Balok (now that is scary).

…did I hear ” Berman” and ” Trek” in the same sentence?? I knew there was some reason my ears were burning! ;)

A nice tribute. I’m going to watch this Simpsons episode now because of it.

15. Michael Hall – January 5, 2015

When I saw Lisa as the Borg Queen, I realized that she became, at some point, an iconic character. I’m not short on criticism for the TNG movies, but that scene where the Queen is lowered into her mecha suit is classic.

“My favorite pic: Mr. Burns as Balok (now that is scary).”

Agreed. Montgomery “Let them have their tar-tar sauce” Burns is a natural as Scary Balok. (And who would be Friendly Balok? Maggie Simpson, of course!)

I’ll probably never watch “The Corbomite Maneuver” in quite the same way, ever again.

That was great… but, even as a fan of TNG and DS9, I thought the inclusion of the Borg queen and a Ferengi were out of place…

#5 CZ – It almost looks like the woman is either shushing the crowd in the theater as in, “ssshhhh, be quiet!” or she is flippingthe bird, quickly and subtly, to us of the theater crowd

Not just the closing credits. The epilogue (when the Simpsons are on their way back home) is a huge Star Trek reference. The bridge, the sounds and the appearance of Grandpa Simpson accompanied with the Klingon fanfare.

The best one had to be Homer with the Gamesters of Triskelion. Oh man … can’t you just hear Homer pleading his case with those brains (one of which is voiced by Harry Shearer)? I’d watch an entire parody episode of that with a big stupid smile pasted to my face (when I wasn’t busting a gut).

The Burns-Balok was great too.

Scott B. out.

So great !! Thanks the Simpsons !

All in fun. Comic Book Guy should have been Keenser…

The only funny part of the whole episode was the Star Trek spoof at the end with Grandpa and the closing credits.

What I find interesting is that nuTrek hasn’t left a cultural footprint. There is a series of movies in production, and Simpsons are referencing TOS… That was the reason I felt Avatar failed, despite being a visually exciting and solid epic adventure…. Movies that are great leave footprints. We are seeing right here, another example of how nuTrek isn’t mattering, I think. I hope that changes with the Star Trek 2016 :D

WONDERFUL!! That’s just too good!! I hope the people at Paramount/CBS got a kick out of that — in a good way. Happy New Year, Star Trek!

@29 (ironhyde): Silly, silly comment. By your standard, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT didn’t make much of an impact, and doesn’t matter either. In fact, the reason why NuTrek exists is because of TOS’ impact on pop culture, which is why the Simpsons did their thing here,

Did you notice how nice fits FOX’s TV anthem at the end? ;)

@29. The current franchise has created about four hours of content. While Star Wars is entertaining, I don’t think anyone considers them ‘great’ movies. Avatar sold almost 3 BILLION in tickets, is considered groundbreaking in the craft of moviemaking, and has several sequels in the planning stages – a failure, according to you. Most movies don’t matter, I’m afraid, for every Casablanca, Shawshank Redemption, or 2001 – A Space Odyssey that comes along there are hundreds of movies made that are quite successful….that don’t leave a footprint.

Nutrek’s part of TOS’s cultural footprint. And so far it’s been so busy referencing TOS and the movies that it hasn’t really had a chance to make it’s own impression.

Plus TOS has been around for nearly 50 years and has been oft-parodied since nearly the beginning.

Best…Trek…Parody…Ever….

It’s easier to parody TOS because that show has elements of fun and light-hearted cheesiness. Whether it be the Day-Glo effects, Scotty’s witty lines, Shatner’s method of acting, or the bright, pastel colours of the sets — TOS is very much ripe for parodies and references in comedies.

No different from the old James Bond movies or the sixties “Batman” series being spoofed and referenced.

#6 In actuality the “Star Trek” brand is currently owned by CBS Television Studios. Paramount Pictures holds rights for the “Star Trek” motion picture series under license fromm CBS Television Studios. http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Star_Trek_corporate_history

*from. Darn typo!

#29 “Movies that are great leave footprints. We are seeing right here, another example of how nuTrek isn’t mattering, I think. I hope that changes with the Star Trek 2016 :D”

I hate to break the news to you, but for lots and lots and LOTS of young people, as far as they are concerned, the Star Trek characters from the Simpsons WERE from NuTrek. Many kids who know the new movies have never laid eyes on TOS and quite simply don’t differentiate between the two.

CBS, just put Star Trek TOS on at 8 pm again for crying out loud.

@39. Jonboc

“I hate to break the news to you, but for lots and lots and LOTS of young people, as far as they are concerned, the Star Trek characters from the Simpsons WERE from NuTrek.”

You do have a habit of making vast assumptions without any shred of evidence!

Great, really great! Good to hear the original Alexander Courage theme played with full orchestra as well. There were some TNG characters in there as well.

Perhaps Bart was wearing a blue shirt because he got wind of what happened to anyone wearing a red shirt.

This reminds me of a funny animated spoof that was around after ST09’s release which showed Scotty wearing his normal red shirt, then when everything starts to go wrong, the next time we see him, he is wearing a gold shirt… A case of anything but red?…:)

Really this debacle or whatever it is between Paramount and CBS is disgusting and is hindering genuine fun and creativity for Trek producers/writers and others. It has got to stop.

#39 “CBS, just put Star Trek TOS on at 8 pm again for crying out loud.”

I’ll drink to that!

I think jonboc is probably right, I remember when JJ bailed due to all the licensing fuss, somebody reported something about focus groups showing customers couldn’t tell the difference between the two, thats why JJ wanted CBS to stop selling original Trek stuff. Which of course they werent about to do, it makes them too much $$!

45. star trackie – January 7, 2015

Sadly, I tend to agree. After all, we are talking about a generation who has no idea who Paul McCartney is….

@45. star trackie

“somebody reported something about focus groups showing customers couldn’t tell the difference between the two”

I find this hilarious & sad as well if it is true.

It is surely our generation’s (the ones old enough to have children and even grandchildren) responsibility and enjoyment to have the later generations be aware of people like Sir Paul McCartney and his wonderful melodies et al…My kids have heard the names of the Beatles and music. They have even heard the names and music of Mozart and others.

My kids clearly know the difference between the various Star Trek series and movies, but then again, they grew up around trekkies, ie me, my husband, their grandfather…My two sons now watch more of every Star Trek than we do and it has been more my older son’s push/desire to get every Star Trek series on DVD. This has been achieved. We share them between two households.

Je suis CHARLIE.

Agreed keachick. My son knows TOS from the rest. He knows 2001 and the original Planet of the Apes. He knows exactly who makes up the Beatles, he knows the Three Stooges and Abbott and Costello and Monty Python. The sad commentary is, most of his friends don’t. Trying to spread the love but in this day and age of internet and 500 channels of nothing on TV, and video games so much is competing for their attention. If you don’t bring the classics to their attention they’re gonna get lost. It is the times we live in.

Episodes [ ]

Kang and kodos [ ].

Perhaps the most common Star Trek reference on the show is the naming of the two recurring alien villains. Typically appearing in "Treehouse of Horror" episodes, Kang and Kodos also claim to be native to the planet Rigel VII .

"Bart of Darkness" [ ]

Bart of Darkness

Itchy as Talosians

The Itchy and Scratchy cartoon in this episode is a parody of TOS : " The Cage ", " The Menagerie, Part I ", and " The Menagerie, Part II ", with Itchy resembling the aliens from Talos IV and possessing strong telepathic and telekenetic abilities.

"Itchy and Scratchy: The Movie" [ ]

Itchy and Scratchy The Movie

Scene from Star Trek XII

The family sees a trailer and clips from the latest Original Series film, Star Trek XII: So Very Tired , which depicts an elderly and senile cast. Captain Kirk complains about poor sleeping habits and everyone else's indifference to his complaining, while Scotty has grown so fat he cannot fire the phasers because his gargantuan stomach is in the way of the control panel.

"Marge vs. the Monorail" [ ]

Leonard Nimoy guest-stars as himself where he makes a celebrity appearance at the christening of the Springfield monorail, where he says it could do at least Warp 5. At the end of the episode, he makes his exit by transporting. He also mentions that the doors in Star Trek: The Original Series were not automated, but operated by stagehands, which is, in fact, true. At the end of the episode, Nimoy states "My work is done here." and beams out of the scene.

"Deep Space Homer" [ ]

Deep Space Homer 1

A fight like on Triskelion

The episode's title is a reference to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . As part of his NASA training, Homer Simpson fights Barney Gumble in the Triskelion arena with the classic " Star Trek fight music" in the background while one of the NASA administrators bets " quatloos on the newcomer." Later, Homer, Bart, and Lisa watch an episode of Itchy and Scratchy entitled "Scar Trek: The Next Laceration", which has otherwise no relation to Star Trek except for its taking place in space.

Deep Space Homer 2

Scar Trek: The Next Laceration

"Lisa's Wedding" [ ]

In this episode, Hugh's watch makes identical noises as a TOS communicator, Troy McClure's uniform is identical to the TOS uniforms, and the nuclear power plant resembles and makes the same noises as the Enterprise .

"The Springfield Files" [ ]

Leonard Nimoy makes another guest appearance. One scene has a hot dog vendor asking him, " Hey, Spock , what do you want on your hot dog? " To which Nimoy answers, " Surprise me. "

At one point, Dr. Hibbert asks Homer if the alien he saw is carbon-based or silicon-based, a reference to the Horta .

"Two Dozen and One Greyhounds" [ ]

A clerk at a pet store performs a "Human-dog mind meld " on Santa's Little Helper. He recommends that the Simpsons buy a lot of his merchandise to help calm the dog – apparently it worked as the next scene depicts the family driving home with a car full of dog related goods.

"Mayored to the Mob" [ ]

The Simpsons go to a sci-fi convention, featuring Star Trek references, including uniforms, etc. Also, the convention's welcome motto is "Set your phasers on fun." Vina's theme from "The Cage" is also heard when Comic Book Guy is entranced by a nerdy young Comic Book Gal.

"Homerazzi" [ ]

The Simpsons Voyager Party

Bon voyage, Voyager

When Marge must replace all of the family's photos that were lost in a photo album fire, she recreates the family's " Star Trek: Voyager Series Finale Party" with Lenny dressed as Seven of Nine and Dr. Hibbert dressed as Tuvok . Carl begins to cry as he thought he could make it through Voyager 's final episode again, but realizes he can't, while Homer wails, " Oh, Captain Janeway ! Your mission ended too soon! Too soon! "

"Tis the Fifteenth Season" [ ]

Bart shows Homer different TV versions of A Christmas Carol . One of them is a TOS version where the Ghost of Christmas Future appears to the crew as a light being. Kirk orders Scotty to fire the torpedoes, but he cannot because the ghost has shown him a vision of how fat he is in the future.

"My Big Fat Geek Wedding" [ ]

Comic Book Guy and Edna Krabappel participate in a Klingon wedding ceremony at the "bi-monthly science fiction convention" (Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con). Later Homer and Marge are remarried by the Klingon priest.

"Stealing First Base" [ ]

The Simpsons kiss

The scene from Star Trek

Bart accidentally falls off the school roof and a girl that he had a crush on gives him CPR. As she starts, a montage of different kisses from movies are shown. One of the kisses featured was from J.J. Abrams ' Star Trek where Uhura kissed Spock .

"The Squirt and the Whale" [ ]

After Lisa tries to save a beached whale from dying, but failed, the citizens of Springfield make use of its remains. One use was for corsets, which Comic Book Guy wears along with Kirk's TOS-uniform. He then proclaims that he is Captain Kirk from Star Trek I , but then the corset gives way little by little and he corrects himself from I to II to V to Generations , until the corset finally gives out and Comic Book Guy says " Boston Legal ".

"The Day the Earth Stood Cool" [ ]

The back page of the issue of The Onion that Marge reads has an article headlined " Borg Decides Earth Not Worth Assimilating" and features a picture of a Borg cube .

Also, when Bart is fighting T-Rex, the band in the factory starts playing the Star Trek fight music.

Homer vs the Gorn

Homer and his pen pal, Eduardo, reenacting "Arena"

Homer aims to live out his unfulfilled dreams with the help of his childhood penpal, including staging a recreation of " Arena ". They rent costumes from Comic Book Guy for only $10, though he requests they not stink up the Gorn head as he needs it for a Bar Mitzvah later. The Gorn costume is miscolored purple for the first of the two shots it appears in.

"The Man Who Came to Be Dinner" [ ]

This episode concludes with a series of Star Trek homages including end credits spoofing that of the original series. The Simpsons fly a starship in a bridge based on the Enterprise 's, complete with original sound effects. (Homer is the Captain; Marge is the communications officer; Bart is Chief engineer; Lisa is Science officer and Maggie is the navigator/helmsman) On the viewscreen, they mistake Grandpa for a Klingon, with a leitmotif based on the one composed by Jerry Goldsmith . The end credits proceed to depict various Simpsons characters in classic Star Trek episodes. [1] (In no particular order: Lenny Leonard/Carl Carlson as Bele and Lou/Eddie as Lokai in " Let That Be Your Last Battlefield "; Barney Gumble as Harry Mudd and Patti and Selma Bouvier as two Alice-series robots in " I, Mudd ": Homer re-enacting Kirk's fighting the Gorn in " Arena "; Crazy Cat Lady as Kirk, Principal Skinner as Spock and cats as Tribbles in " The Trouble with Tribbles "; Bart Simpson as Scott in a Jefferies Tube " The Doomsday Machine "; Akira the Japanese waiter as Sulu, shirtless and fencing in " The Naked Time "; Marge Simpson as Vina in her Orion slave girl guise in " The Cage "; Lisa as the Borg Queen from either First Contact or a Voyager appearance; Milhouse as Quark ; Mr Burns as the Balok Puppet in " The Corbomite Maneuver "; Homer as shirtless Kirk summoned to the Providers in " The Gamesters of Triskelion ".)

"Lisa with an 'S'" [ ]

The opening couch gag features several couches surrounding a vessel similar to the USS Enterprise , consisting of donuts. The music is the Klingon theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture .

Other references and minor parodies [ ]

  • In "Homer vs. Patty and Selma" and "Itchy and Scratchy Land", the couch gag shows the family transporting onto the couch using transporters seen in TNG.
  • In "Blood Feud", Mr. Burns uses the phrase "Revenge is a dish best served cold." from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan .
  • In "A Star is Burns", William Shatner is one of the actors auditioning for the role of Montgomery Burns dressed in a Starfleet uniform and speaking in his "Kirk voice" ("Ex-cell-ENT!").
  • In "The Homer They Fall", the Comic Book Guy tries to sell an utility belt he won in a bingo game at a Star Trek convention to a pawn shop. He explains that the organizers have severely miscalculated, as a medium-sized belt is obviously too small for most Star Trek fans. The shopkeeper refuses to buy the belt, and eventually Bart buys it for four dollars.
  • In "Das Bus", Comic Book Guy attempts to download a nude photo of Captain Janeway only to be interrupted by an ad for Homer's internet company; Comic Book Guy speculates if the service could provide "faster nudity."
  • In "Treehouse of Horror IX", After Lisa puts a radioactive battery in the remote control, she presses the button of the remote to the TV, the remote fires at the TV with the same sound as the Federation hand phasers used in Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Voyager , Star Trek Generations , and Star Trek: First Contact .
  • In "Treehouse of Horror X", one of Comic Book Guy's (as arch-nemesis "The Collector") plastic-wrapped acquisitions in his lair is Jeri Ryan in her costume and prosthetic appliances as Seven of Nine and holds Bart and Lisa at bay with " the only working phaser ever built " which was " fired once to keep William Shatner from releasing another album ".
  • In "Bart's Girlfriend", Grandpa Simpson admits that he was "the one that canceled Star Trek ".
  • In "Old Yeller Belly", the Comic Book Guy can be seen taking back a Spider-Man and a Batman outfit, and an Original Series blue sciences uniform to a costume store.
  • In "Simpson Tide", Homer ends up as captain of a military submarine and refers to helmsman Moe Szyslak as "Mr. Moe". A "Mr. Sulu" is also part of the crew and mentions Rigel VII while setting a course.
  • In "I'm Goin' to Praiseland", the Comic Book Guy hallucinates he is Spock, and saves Kirk from a haywire chair. Uhura declares she wants to make out with him, as do Catwoman and Agent 99.
  • In "Homer vs. Dignity", Homer tells Comic Book Guy he'd like to buy a mint-condition Spider-Man issue #1, who retorts "and I'd like an hour on the holodeck with Seven of Nine!"
  • In "Sweets and Sour Marge", the Comic Book Guy is seen buying Leonard Nimoy 's three books, I Am Not Spock , I Am Spock and I Am Also Scotty (of course, the third being only a fictional book).
  • In "The Father, the Son and the Holy Guest Star", Finnegan's theme from TOS : " Shore Leave " (composed by Gerald Fried ) can be heard during an Irish brawl in "Catholic Heaven".
  • In "Mypods and Broomsticks", the Mapple headquarters door makes the same sound of the door sliding open in TOS.
  • The story "Fan-Tasty Island" (From Simpsons Comics #10) starts off with Homer dreaming that he is a captain in Starfleet , with his crew consisting of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Lenny Leonard and Groundskeeper Wille/ chief engineering officer (all of whom are wearing the Starfleet uniform from late 2270s-2350s ). Before waking up, Homer takes an interest in a giant donut surrounding an unnamed planet.
  • In addition to Leonard Nimoy, other actors/actresses have provided voice work for the show. Those voices include Wren T. Brown , Kim Cattrall , Christopher Collins , Jim Cummings , Andy Dick , Miriam Flynn , Kelsey Grammer , Jess Harnell , John Kassir , Maurice LaMarche , Tress MacNeille , Colm Meaney , Charles Napier , Winona Ryder , Jack Sheldon , Sarah Silverman , Patrick Stewart , George Takei , Ron Taylor , Scott Thompson , Karl Wiedergott , Paul Willson , Paul Winfield , Brent Spiner and Seth MacFarlane .

Arduously! Each image had three or four screens of credits over it, so by layering them up and masking out the text I was able to get a mostly clear image, and just had to clone in the appropriate colours to fill in the remaining areas.

History [ edit ]

When the Simpsons photo album was destroyed, they recreated the pictures, including a party for the finale of the series. Carl said that he thought he would be able to see watch the final again, but he wasn't and started to cry. Homer said then that Captain Janeway 's mission ended too soon. [1]

When Homer was working as Mr. Burns ' "prank monkey", the two of them pulled a prank on Comic Book Guy . At the beginning of the prank, Homer said that he wanted to buy a mint condition Spider-Man #1 comic. Comic Book Guy sarcastically replied, "And I'd like an hour on the holodeck with Seven of Nine ." Every Star Trek Reference, Easter Eggs & Jokes In The Simpsons

9. set phasers on fun.

The Simpsons Homer Gorn

Mayored To The Mob, the ninth episode in season ten, features a whole host of both Star Trek and non-Star Trek references, thanks to a small portion of the episode being set at the aforementioned bi-mon-sci-fi-con, although this is a separate con to the one previously mentioned in the article.

First off, the convention's motto shown as punters enter the venue is "set phasers on fun". Furthermore, Seymour Skinner, as well as numerous other attendees at the convention, is dressed as Spock.

Most notable for eagle-eared listeners, however, occurs when The Comic Book Guy becomes entranced with a nerdy young lady, The Comic Book Gal. Upon meeting her and realising they share similar interests, the background music played comes by way of Alexander Courage. His song, Under The Spell, was featured in the original Star Trek pilot, The Cage.

Not much more ever came of The Comic Book Gal, but we'll always have this Star Trek-related memory of her etched into Simpsons history, and most likely the disturbing mind of The Comic Book Guy.

Can be found raving about the latest IMPACT Wrestling signing, the Saints Row franchise, and King Shark in The Suicide Squad.

Star trek: discovery season 5 reveals fate of mirror universe saru.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 contained some big reveals and connections to the Mirror Universe, including the fate of Mirror Saru.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 provided closure to the show's Mirror Universe storyline, including the fate of Mirror Saru
  • Mirror Universe Saru played a crucial role in the Terran resistance and helped commandeer the ISS Enterprise to safety in the Prime Universe.
  • Mirror Saru's positive actions contrast with the usual evil versions of Star Trek's other Mirror Universe counterparts.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 revealed the fate of Mirror Universe Saru (Doug Jones). Written by Johanna Lee and Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, Discovery season 5, episode 5 , "Mirrors" saw Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) confront Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) when all four became stranded on the Terran ISS Enterprise while searching for the next clue to the Progenitor's technology. Discovery didn't actually return to the Mirror Universe in "Mirrors," but setting the episode on the Terran Enterprise in a pocket of interdimensional space was the next best thing.

Given how closely Discovery season 1 was tied to the Mirror Universe, it seems only fitting that the show's final season should reference it in some way. "Mirrors" provided that reference in spades, with the appearance of the Enterprise and the story of how it crossed over into the Prime timeline. Along the way, Discovery revealed what happened to some major players in the Terran Empire, including the fate of Mirror Saru , who was surprisingly instrumental in the episode despite not appearing.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Mirror universe saru in star trek: discovery explained, saru played some interesting roles in the mirror universe.

Although Mirror Saru's role was minimal in Discovery seasons 1 and 3, "Mirrors" revealed that he went on to play an integral role in the Terran resistance and was instrumental in getting the ISS Enterprise and its complement of Terran refugees to safety . Mirror Saru first appeared on Discovery in season 1, episode 11, "The Wolf Inside" where the Prime Universe Michael Burnham met him as her Imperial Slave. Although Saru had no name when they met, Michael decided to call him after his Prime counterpart, and he later saved her life when she was attacked by Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif) after his Voq personality manifested.

Unlike many Mirror and Prime Universe counterparts, Mirror Saru was a good person and not simply an evil version of his Prime self.

Mirror Saru played a larger role in the Discovery season 3 two-parter "Terra Firma," where he became the servant of Emperor Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) who had crossed back to the Mirror Universe via the Guardian of Forever (Paul Guilfoyle). Georgiou took Saru into her confidence, saving his life by telling him the truth about Vahar'ai, which demonstrated how much she had changed thanks to her time in the Prime Universe. It wasn't made clear if Georgiou's experiences due to the Guardian had altered the timeline , but Discovery season 5's reveals about Mirror Saru seem to suggest that they did.

What Happened To Mirror Universe Saru In Star Trek: Discovery

"mirrors" revealed that saru survived after his early season appearances.

Thanks to Michael and Book's adventure on the ISS Enterprise, Discovery revealed that Mirror Saru became a rebel leader in the Terran Empire after the High Chancellor, Spock, was executed for trying to enact reforms. A plaque on the Enterprise found by Book during "Mirrors" discussed how a Kelpian former slave-turned-rebel helped the Enterprise crew and a group of refugees commandeer the ship and get to safety in the Prime Universe while he stayed behind to continue his work as a rebellion leader. Although the Kelpian wasn't named on the plaque, Michael and Book inferred that it was Mirror Saru.

Given where Discovery left Mirror Saru's storyline, it isn't surprising to learn that he became a prominent rebellion member . This ties in with what the Guardian of Forever told Georgiou after her experiences in "Terra Firma;" that her saving Saru would allow him to go on to save others, having a positive effect on the timeline. "Mirrors" finally showed that effect, and helped Star Trek: Discovery close some other chapters on Star Trek 's Mirror Universe . Including a reference to Mirror Saru was a smart move for the episode as well, given Prime Saru's reduced role in season 5.
