Grimes (born March 17, 1988) is the stage name of the virtually indescribable electro-R&B and synthpop singer-songwriter and musician Claire Boucher, hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Named after the grime music genre she discovered during MySpace’s heyday, Boucher’s musical excursions began whilst she was studying neuroscience at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. The musician was ultimately expelled for not giving the school her full attention, however soon began organising performances alongside the arts collective Lab Synthèse in an abandoned textile factory. The label Arbutus Records was soon born as a promotional outlet for the collective’s acts, and released Grimes’ debut album cassette “Geidi Primes” in 2010.
The musician’s sophomore album “Halfaxa” followed in late 2010, after which Grimes released a split 12” with d’Eon entitled “Darkbloom”. The releases showcased Grimes’ alluring lo-fi dance style, with often un-categorisable influences, which resulted in the singer opening for Lykke Li on her North American tour in May 2011. She subsequently collaborated with fellow Lab Synthèse act Majical Cloudz on the single “Dream World” and rereleased her debut album “Geidi Primes” on No Pain in Pop Records.
Grimes signed with the revered UK independent label 4AD in January 2012, who issued her third full-length album “Visions” in February of that year. Recorded on Apple’s GarageBand in the singer’s apartment over the course of three weeks, the album earned critical acclaimed from the likes of Pitchfork Media, Rough Trade, and The Guardian. Aided by the singles “Genesis” and “Oblivion”, in 2013 Grimes won the Juno Award for best Electronic Album of the Year Award, followed by the Webby Award for Artist of the Year.
Live reviews
As a massive Grimes fan, the thing I like most is how she's evolved as an live artist, from the very basic shows at the start, where it was just Claire and her synthesiser, to slowly getting projections and live dancers, to two amazing shows in London where there was just about everything you could imagine on stage.
In the two-year absence from the UK, I've kept my eye on the few live shows she's performed elsewhere, the highlight being one in the house of blues in the USA, where she was absolutely on top form, as well as freed from being behind her equipment more thanks to a wireless microphone system.
Not that the live show is a cover up for any musical shortcomings, if anything it just added to the entire experience, I was curious as to how she'd pull off a album like visions in the live setting, however, she more than lived up to expectations, with some tracks reworked or given extended intros/segues.
So to conclude, I highly recommend seeing Grimes when she returns to these shores, or is playing in your area, as someone who's seen (whom I consider to be) some of the best artists currently around (Bat For Lashes, Marina & The Diamonds,Lykke Li etc), Grimes is equally and well deserving of her place amongst them.

Grimes is the stage name of Claire Boucher, an artist who I can honestly say is like no other. Indescribably unique, original and hauntingly beautiful, her sound has awoken a whole new age of music: she encompasses experimentation and has stretched the electro genre, one that is very much on the rise in recent years, even further than the likes of her contemporaries. There is something hypnotic about the singer, songwriter and musician’s sound. Her lyrics are understated and used as subtle accompaniment to her synthpop melodies and unique instrumentals. Her music is wonderful to watch live: Grimes accompanies her sound with dazzling light shows and even backing dancers, making the whole experience an incredible spectacle. With her soft pink hair, unusual style and inexplicably high voice, Grimes is a vision to watch on stage and it is almost impossible to take your eyes off her. She captivated the whole crowd and had everyone dancing and waving their arms in the air in time to such hits as ‘Genesis’ and ‘Oblivion’.
Claire Elise Boucher better known by her stage name of Grimes is considered to be one of the most exciting electro musicians to have emerged from Canada in recent years. She released her third album 'Visions' in 2012 and was met with huge acclaim by critics for its innovation and creativity regarding production and melody. After finding support from the likes of UK publications such as NME, Grimes found herself with a brand new following and suddenly she was propelled up festival lineups and had larger stages to perform upon.
However due to the style of Grimes' sound and the stage show that she had originally designed, she maintains a sense of intimacy and darkness which suits her twisted music well. The musicians onstage help her to craft the tones of 'Visions' and the likes of 'Oblivion' sound absolutely perfect when compared to the record. 'Genesis' is the real highlight as Grimes attacks this ethereal, anthemic piece of alt-electro with so much force the whole crowd cannot help but jump along in complete amazement.
A very authentic concert with a lot of dance. Guest appearances, her top hits and a cover of Ave Maria was mixed in well composed flavor.
I missed some songs from the latest album she never played, like world princess part 2. The show also felt all too short. Before she finished off with the banger kill V maim she said she doesn't like doing encore so she would just play it right now instead. She seemed very insecure during the whole concert and kept apologizing for not speaking japanese, interrupting her singing and so on. She probably need more stage experience to feel more comfortable or maybe it was all a bit of an act to play the role of a cute girl, in the lines of the japanese ideals. But as soon as she got caught up in the performance, the insecurity went away.
I guess I respect that she didn't do the encore but it is an element to me that makes the end of an concert more satisfying so I was a bit dissapointed.
Anyway, great show and good crowd!
I saw Grimes in concert in Lakewood when she or they were opening for Lana Del Rey and honestly it was terrifying. I nearly went deaf. The entire crowd was really scared. I don't know what it is but they sound horrible live. They sound so much better not live. I didn't enjoy their performance and I don't plan on seeing them live again because that was really scary and it was so loud and painful to have to hear that for an hour. I do not recommend seeing them in concert.
We saw Grimes in Nottingham on the 8th of March '16. I'll preface this by saying it is the best gig we've EVER been to! She was mesmerising, her enthusiasm infectious. The venue, Rock City, was perfect for seeing Grimes due to various levels surrounding the stage. We watched from the balcony and had a stunning view of this spectacular show. She is an absolute genius and a sweetheart to boot. I 100% recommend you buy tickets to her show. Do it!!
This was the last show of her tour and she didn't disappoint. Her voice was fantastic and she really confident on stage with her dance moves She did try to have a convo with the audience but seemed all over the place.
The crowd was very engaged and danced to every song, though a bit aggressive at times. The set list was more of old tracks from her 2012 album Visions. I was hoping for more tracks from art angels like butterfly.
What an intense show from Grimes at the Trianon! I was expecting her venue for a long time now, and wasn't disappointed a bit...
The Trianon is a rather small place and it was pretty fun to see the crowd going crazy on her hits.
I particularly enjoyed her live versions of Realiti, Be a body and of course Kill V Maim, which ended the show as everybody went wild.
I can't wait for her to come back, hopefully on a bigger stage :)
Saw Grimes on 11/25/15 in Chicago. Incredibly high energy set that had everyone in the crowd dancing and going crazy. Her live vocal performance was outstanding, especially for the last show on the tour.
Grimes also goes out of her way to meet her fans after most shows, which is absolutely amazing for an artist of her popularity. I recommend her show to anyone, especially if you enjoy dancing.
What a fusion of old school Sven Vath mind corrosive techno with an angelic vocal that's both punk and classically celestial.. kind of Bjork-like but much more. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her. Love her.

Grime Transformed British Music. A New Exhibition Traces How.
“Grime Stories: From the Corner to the Mainstream” at the Museum of London highlights the 20-year-old history and far-reaching impact of the British rap genre.
By Desiree Ibekwe
LONDON — On a wall-mounted screen at the Museum of London, a low-resolution video showed young people rapping quickly and hungrily over syncopated beats. Every so often, a decidedly 2000s graphic flashed on the screen, reading “Risky Roadz 2.”
The video is an early work from Roony “RiskyRoadz” Keefe, who documented the early days of grime, the muscular British rap genre. Keefe first picked up a camera to chronicle the nascent scene in 2004, and made DVDs of the freestyles he recorded.
“I’d hear an M.C. and think, ‘You’re good, put them on,’” Keefe said in a telephone interview. The DVD helped propel the rapper in the scene, like he was an A&R talent scout, he added.
Almost two decades later, Keefe, 37, is a co-curator of “ Grime Stories: From the Corner to the Mainstream ,” a small but heartfelt exhibition currently on view at the Museum of London until December that looks back at the early days of grime, and the context from which it emerged.
“It’s a big thing, you know,” Keefe said. “You never think you’re going to end up in a museum.”
Initially a tight-knit scene formed by young people in East London, grime now occupies a prized position in mainstream British music and culture. The genre’s selling power is so significant, Ikea featured D Double E, an East London M.C., in its 2019 Christmas advertisement . In politics, the 2017 campaign # Grime4Corbyn harnessed rappers’ clout, encouraging young people to back the then-leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn.
At the 2015 Brit Awards — Britain’s version of the Grammys — Kanye West performed with a host of grime artists . Drake has long embraced the genre , featuring the rappers Skepta and Giggs on his “ More Life ” mixtape in 2017, getting a tattoo of Skepta’s Boy Better Know crew, and helping to revive the cult TV show “ Top Boy ,” which stars the grime artist Kano and is set in East London.
“Grime Stories” was designed as a “venue to speak about the real lived experience of East Londoners,” said Dhelia Snoussi, a curator at the Museum of London. A way to “tell some of the important stories that are lesser heard.”
When it emerged in the early 2000s, grime was an urgent affirmation of identity. It developed as an evolution from and reaction to garage, a popular Black British dance genre that had moved in flashy, pop directions. Other British forms of rap had become overly Americanized, some felt, with slang borrowed from across the Atlantic. The creators of grime wanted instead to speak to life in their corner of London.
The exhibition was built around Keefe, who, as well as running a production company and directing, is a London black cabdriver. His knowledge of the city’s streets was a way to tell the story of the community surrounding the genre, but the curators “immediately realized that a lot of the places we wanted to take the cab to were no longer there,” Snoussi said, and gentrification became a focal point for the exhibition.
The show includes short documentaries and memorabilia like Keefe’s first camcorder and a bag from Rhythm Division record shop , a hub in grime’s early days. (It is now a coffee shop.)
Particularly for purists, grime is a genre with strict technical parameters, including a tempo of 140 beats per minute. But it’s also a way of thinking about community and identity. “ It’s not a BPM, it’s not a sound, it’s everything,” says a video in the exhibition.
The scene developed around public housing in East London, and its specificity of place is evident in the exhibition’s partial reconstruction of a basement belonging to the family of Jammer, one of the genre’s pioneering figures. Jammer’s basement hosted early collaborations, freestyles and recordings, memorialized by the layers of artists’ tags covering the walls.
DJ Target, who now hosts a show on the BBC’s Radio 1Xtra station, was part of those early days. Grime soon became a culture, which influenced “how people dressed, how they would speak, how they looked, the haircut they would get, the slang words they were using,” he said. “And all of it just felt like it was ours.”
That desire to see real experiences reflected in music was also a reaction to the young rappers’ environment. Despite growing up in London with parents who also may have grown up in Britain, early grime artists “were still trying to negotiate and find that sense of belonging,” said Joy White, an academic who has studied the genre since 2007.
Success was initially localized, but then came 2003, a year that Dan Hancox, a music journalist, described as a “critical, explosive moment” for grime — similar to what 1977 was for punk. In 2003, the 19-year-old rapper Dizzee Rascal released his debut album, “ Boy In Da Corner ,” which went on to win Britain’s top music accolade, the Mercury Prize.
“That was a seminal moment for everybody to look and see that this is actually possible to do on a much bigger scale,” Target said.
In the subsequent near-decade, more artists emerged from the grime scene to become influential figures in British music, despite record labels signing many rappers and then letting them languish.
In the 2010s, many grime rappers embraced a more mainstream-friendly sound. Wiley had chart success with dance-focused tracks like “ Wearing My Rolex ” in 2008 and “ Heatwave ” in 2012. Artists like Tinchy Stryder, Skepta and Tinie Tempah also started climbing the British charts.
The exhibition includes a gray Trinity Korg keyboard owned by Jammer and borrowed by Skepta to produce “ That’s Not Me ,” a 2014 track that announced a return to grime authenticity.
That same year, a young M.C. from south London called Stormzy released his debut EP. Today, Stormzy is grime’s most successful breakout. “Without a brand-new star with the extraordinary, unique charisma and talent that Stormzy has,” Hancox said, “you wouldn’t have grime landing itself in the popular consciousness in the way it has.”
Stormzy, now 28 and a household name in Britain, represents both grime’s far-reaching influence and how the genre has changed, with tracks on his albums swinging from more traditional grime to more recent genre innovations in Black British music.
The influence of grime is built into the D.N.A. of many of those genres, including Afroswing , U.K. drill and road rap. The inspiration has moved in the other direction, too, and grime has evolved to encompass more fluidity and diversity in the beats and styles M.C.s choose to rap over.
Jammer embraces these changes. “What people tend to say is, we want it to sound like the old days,” he said. “It’s not the old days.”
“I’m here for the new, I’m here for the exciting,” he added.

Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best
So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!
Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?
Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.
1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see
Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?
2. Meet new friends
It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!
3. The freedom
Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.
4 . It’s a cult
You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.
5. Confidence boost
Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.
6. Experience the music your way
Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.
So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.
Your next gig awaits
It all starts here.

UK Beatsmith JD. Reid Returns With First Solo Project In Three Years, ‘Sometimes I Wonder 001’
A tight four-tracker that built from over a decade’s experience as a producer.
Towards the end of last year, JD. Reid announced that having completed a stack of projects as producer and executive producer—including Mahalia’s IRL album—he’d be returning to club settings and putting more time into DJing. Thankfully, that hasn’t kept him out of the studio entirely because he’s just dropped a new project, sometimes i wonder 001 , his first since 2021’s North West’s Finest .
This new EP offer one of the most striking examples of JD. Reid’s evolution as a producer. Subtle and detailed electronics are the prevailing elements, but he’s also stitched in crunchy rap beats and there’s even a hint of grime before peaking with the more energetic, club-oriented “happy face” at the end.

On the subject of his intentions for the EP, Reid shares: “I love the feeling you get when you hear something for the first time that really resonates with you but it feels brand new. Above all, though, the drive behind this EP was that it was important to come back better and in a different space musically from the last time I released music because, as a person, I’m in a different space now too.”

The Yellowstone actor debut track, “ No Horse To Ride ,” debuted inside the Top 10 of the Country Songs sales chart at No. 7. In its second week of release, “No Horse To Ride” racked up 95K Shazams, placing it No. 2 on the Shazam Country chart, No. 2 on the Shazam Top 200 USA chart and No. 37 on the Shazam Global chart, a rarity for a country artist. Grimes grew up playing music in the church as the son of a Pentecostal pastor. The Ohio native is now finding his own voice and style as an artist, inspired by the likes of Colter Wall, Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, and the late Townes Van Zandt.
