Trek Remedy Wsd 8 (2016) First Ride

Trek Remedy WSD 8 first ride

  • by Cyclesgo

X_Roo4748

The Trek Remedy WSD 8 uses the exact same geometry as the unisex Remedy — so no messing around with a shape that works to make it ‘suitable’ for the female rider. Instead, the women-specific aspect of the design is in the contact points: the wider saddle and slimmer grips, both of which were instantly to my liking. The cockpit is well organised too. There’s a nice profile to the 750mm handlebar, and combined with the 65mm stem, it gives an immediate sense of control that makes the bike feel capable and pacey.

Just like the unisex version, the Remedy WSD has adjustable geometry, via the asymmetric Mino Link pivot hardware that connects the upper link to the seatstays. This means you can tighten up the head angle by 0.5°, while raising the bottom bracket slightly. But, just like the unisex bike, we preferred the extra stability and poise of the bike in the slacker position. Still, the adjustment means you have the option to get the handling dialled-in for an epic adventure where pedal clearance may be a priority.

Suspension-wise, the 2016 model has 140mm-travel front and rear, where the excellent RockShox Pike Solo Air fork proved a doddle to set up, with extra scope for fine-tuning the travel progression using volume reducers if needed. Inside the Fox Float rear shock is Trek’s proprietary RE:aktiv damping. It has three settings — locked out, pedal platform and fully open — where the open setting offers really good support and tracking.

Sram Gx Single-Ring Set-Up Brings Simplicity And Seamless Shifting

My biggest concern when the bulls copperhead evo arrived was that I might struggle on the steeper climbs with the single 32t chainring. But, with the 11-speed, 10-42t cassette out back my concerns proved unfounded. In fact, I loved the simplicity of the single-ring set-up, and after a couple of big rides I was converted. Shifting with SRAM GX was seamless and I really liked the Cage Lock technology — where you can pull the mech forward and lock it in that position to make removing the rear wheel considerably easier when you puncture — which I did, even with the Bontrager tyres set-up tubeless.

I still think the combination of the XR4 on the front (giving good cornering grip) and the faster rolling XR3 on the back makes complete sense though. In fact, it’s hard to find fault with any of the parts adorning the Remedy 8 WSD.

Trek went deep for 2017 and launched all new models of their Fuel EX, Remedy, and Slash platforms. At their launch event last year in Squamish we were introduced to and rode the first two, but only got a sneak peek of the Slash as its announcement followed about a month later. Go here for a full run down on spec, geo, pricing, and my early ride impressions of the Fuel EX and Remedy, and you can read Perry's Slash review here. The reason I'm starting this Remedy review with all of that info is because Trek didn't just release new versions of those bikes, they also changed the way the lineup looked:

Is it worth buying a women-specific bike?

trek remedy wsd

Product Overview

Overall rating:, trek remedy 8 27.5 women’s.

  • Well specced components meant no need for immediate upgrades.
  • Haven’t even noticed that it’s an alloy frame.
  • Standard Issue Bontrager Tyres have only let me down in the deepest of mud.
  • Matt finishing touches on the frame scuff too easily.
  • Women’s finishing kit was pointless and a token effort.
  • SRAM Guide R Brakes needed bleeding a couple of times.

Laura Bailey saddles up her new Trek Remedy 8 27.5 Women’s in a bid to ascertain whether or not women’s specific rigs are worth it.

>>> No such thing as Women Specific Geometry?

It was around two years ago that I borrowed a mountain bike and nervously set off for my first time on the trails. Twelve months on, one trip to A&E, several hairy moments, but lots of laughs and smiles later, it’s safe to say I’m hooked. So when I was given the opportunity to join MBR’s longterm test fleet on a 2018 Trek Remedy 8.0 Women’s bike I jumped at it.

It’s Trek’s All Mountain offering, a bike with 150mm travel and some serious heritage. It’s also the only 650b full suspension bike in the range, and is the filler in a pretty epic sandwich, nestled between the highly acclaimed Trek Slas h and Trek Fuel EX , our MBR’s Bike of the Year 2017.

trek remedy 8 27.5 women's

From the off I was wondering whether this was going to be too much of a bike for me. Trek’s description on the website is about getting gnarly, and spending more time with your tyres off the ground than on them. My A&E trip stemmed from poorly executed air time, and I’ve attempted to keep it rubber side down ever since! But I’m excited to ride something totally different to anything I’ve ridden before, and see whether this bike can help me take my riding up a notch.

With those thoughts flitting through my head, I switched to important issues.  What was she going to be called?  Yes, she’s a she, all my bikes are girls.  And yes, they have names.  I build a friendship (or sometimes hatred) of my bikes, and I spend a lot of time on them, so it seems only fair to christen them properly.  I have one Trek in my fleet already, Stacey, so it had to ring nicely with that, and I like to give a nod to something connected to the bike or the brand in someway.  So Ladies and Gents, please can I introduce, Tracey.

trek remedy 8 27.4 women's

Thinner grips were more hindrance than help

So a little more about Tracey – she carries a Women’s tag, however, the WSD geometry that Trek was once at the forefront of has gone. Instead it’s modified finishing kit that accounts for the differences between the sexes. Unsurprisingly, the Remedy is adorned with a full complement of Bontrager components, and it’s here you’ll see the Women’s touches: A narrower 750mm handlebar (even though Trek’s website still states 780mm), Bontrager Evoke 2 women’s saddle and thinner grips , for our oh so delicate dainty derrieres and hands. I find it a touch ironic that after my first few rides with Tracey these are two of the only things I want to change.

Sure, saddle choice is always so personal, and this one just isn’t for me, and I’m sporting a sore hands from the Bontrager grips, which are rock hard with a savage metal lock ring.

Trek Remedy 8 27.5 Women’s

Trek Remedy 8 27.5 Women’s final verdict

As a female rider I was keen to see what all the fuss is around women specific mountain bikes. Are brands still shrinking and pinking, or is there a genuine benefit to a women’s set up. Tracey was Trek’s WSD (women’s specific design) Remedy and stood out as the only bike in the Remedy range targeted directly at women.

Did you change anything straightaway?

A couple of quick changes straight up resulted in me removing the only features that actually identified the Remedy 8 as a women’s bike. Namely the narrow Bontrager saddle and skinny grips! Aside from that I left her as she was to see how she bedded in, and in the end there was nothing else I felt needed changing.

Was the bike easy to set up?

For someone who is not a fan of anything mechanical or technical, it was a delight to have a bike that was pretty much ready to go. Aside from a quick conversion to tubeless, and setting up the suspension, she was hot to trot. Like most Trek suspension bikes the Remedy has a Mino link, which offers two geometry settings. I left it in the high position from the off, as I love a cheeky mid-trail pedal to maintain my momentum.

How did it ride?

Better than me. In fact, it has probably taken most of the time we’ve been together for my riding to come up to the level that this bike was designed for. And, until recently, I’ve always felt like I’ve been reining in an ever-eager stead. Looking back over the past ten months though, my riding has progressed so much and that is definitely due to how solid and trusting the Trek Remedy feels. She’s been a confidence builder, an ever-capable pal on my riding journey.

Did anything break or wear out?

Despite the first four months of our time together being in atrocious weather Tracey proved ruggedly resilient. Over a year of plentiful riding and racing I wore out one bottom bracket and several sets of brake pads. Oh and the SRAM Guide brakes needed bleeding a couple of times.

Aside from that, any other damage was user induced. A bashed rear mech required a replacement cage, a crash led to a folded front wheel new. In fact, the only real downer on her durability was the paint. It looked cool to begin with but within weeks it was displaying gentle scratches on the top tube, and a year down the line she looks fairly tired, the matt black detailing faring the worst.

If you could change one thing about your longtermer what would it be?

I just remove the women’s specific tag – because aside from a hint of mint green and slight shifts in finishing kit, it’s the same bikes as the men’s version. And it seems Trek agrees, as there will be no WSD Remedy for 2019.

trek remedy 8 27.5 women's

Would I buy this bike? Yes. Trek has done a great job balancing the compromise between value and performance, and in the last couple of months my riding has reached a level that finally takes advantage of the very capable 150mm travel Remedy. It’s the confidence this bike has given me that really allowed me to up my game. And that’s worth the price of entry alone.

The 2017 Trek Remedy and Fuel EX Get Even More Trail-Ready

Geometry tweaks mean the bikes are longer, lower, and slacker for the new year

Headshot of mike yozell

Just a short year after launching updates to the Fuel EX, including a stiffer chassis, a reworked rear shock, and slight geometry tweaks, Trek is at it again. This time around, the big story for the Fuel EX is the move further from the XC sphere and firmly into the realm of trail bikes. The new chassis gets longer, lower, and slacker, as is the fashion among many manufacturers at the moment. Travel grows to 130 at both ends (up from 120mm previously), and the bike is able to fit both 29-inch and, with the swap to a longer 140mm fork, 27.5+ wheels on the same frame. It’s available from Trek dealers in either configuration.

Trek Fuel EX

Those aren’t the only tweaks Trek included; the design team got the directive to increase frame stiffness and, where possible, pare some weight. To do both these things, Trek examined tubing shapes and layout of the frame and came up with a few surprising tricks to get the numbers it was after. On today’s modern frames, one of the things designers need to contend with is how the fork will clear the frame when turned. This usually means frame shapes that cantilever the headtube out in such a way that the fork crown will pass under the downtube without contact. To get around this design (and at the same time save some weight and add stiffness to the front triangle), Trek came up with a unique design called Straightshot that uses a downtube that’s linear from the bottom bracket to the headtube. The new front triangle is claimed to be both lighter and stiffer than the previous version.

Trek Knock Block

To deal with the fact that the fork crown will now strike the downtube if turned far enough, Trek, with the help of component manufacturer FSA, came up with a novel solution: a headset with an integrated travel limiter. Called Knockblock, the system relies on keyed headset spacers that lock into the stem and headset bearing cap. The headset cap itself has a tab that rides in a groove in the top tube; that groove contains replaceable rubber bumpers that keep the headset from rotating too much and prevent the fork crown from hitting the downtube. The bottom of the downtube has a rubber protector near the fork, as added defense in the event of a huge crash that might knock the stem out of alignment.  The Knockblock system is designed for use with the new Bontrager Line X stem and matching 35mm handlebar. For customers who want to use other stems, a keyed spacer with a pinch-bolt clamp—think of a seat collar that clamps around the steerer tube under the stem—allows the use of any 1-1/8-inch model.

The top-end Fuel EX 9.9 is 1x only; models that are lower in the line are able to accept a front derailleur. Consumers will get their choice of a 27.5+/140mm fork with 2.8-inch tires or a 29er with 130mm. Frames are available in both OCLV carbon and Alpha aluminum, with both versions sharing identical geometry and details.

For women, Trek has replaced the Lush with the new Fuel EX in three models: the Carbon 9.8, and the Alpha Alloy EX 8, and EX 5. Backing off from the old women’s design that had separate geometry and frames, riders now get the same frame as the men with touch points and shock tunes adjusted for typically smaller, lighter riders. Smaller size frames (14” and 15.5”) are available in a 27.5-inch wheel size only, with 17” and larger available in both 29er and 27.5+ variants at all build levels.

For those who want truly custom rides, the Fuel EX 9.9, 9.8, and women’s 9.8 frames can be purchased through Project 1, Trek’s in-house paint and customization program. There is a three-week delivery time, and riders can choose paint and component choices through their dealer, or online through Trek.

Trek Remedy

The new Remedy is much of the same story: lower, longer, slacker, and more aggressive for 2017. Travel grows from 140mm to 150mm, and the head angle drops to 66/66.5 degrees, down from 67.5/68 degrees last year. The really big news is that the Remedy will be 27.5 only. Interestingly, however, if you run the new Fuel EX as a 29er bike with a 140mm fork, it comes really close to the old Remedy 29er in terms of geometry and layout. Similarly to the Fuel EX, the women’s models get revised touch points and shock tunes. Also available is a Race Shop Limited version of the Remedy. This model sees a 160mm fork up front; slight parts differences, and slacker geometry (66 high, 65.5 low).

I visited with Trek in Squamish, British Columbia for a few days in early June, where I was treated to typical Pacific Northwest weather, alternating between bright and sunny and overcast and rain—perfect for seeing what the new bikes were about.

First up was the Fuel EX—and it's pretty baller. Compared to last year’s model, a bike that won our Editors' Choice award , the new Fuel delivers on the promise of sharper, more aggressive handling that's in line with todays trail and all-mountain-oriented riding. The frame is noticeably stiffer in the front end with handling characteristics reminiscent of the old Remedy 29, but it’s also more precise—something I can only ascribe to the beefed-up front end, robust 34 fork, and the new Bontrager Line stem. The stem is a shorter length than I previously would have run, thanks to the top tube length that grew about 7mm when compared to the 2016 model. Mated to the Line stem is the Line OCLV handlebar with a 35mm center section. Worried that simply moving to the larger diameter interface would create an unduly stiff bar, Bontrager worked hard to keep the flex pattern of the smaller diameter while using the extra material to bump up strength and keep the weight in check. This gave the bike a comfortable feel while keeping the buzz that sometimes comes with oversized bars in control.

The new head angle and longer top tube also add to the bike’s wheelbase and give the new version a bit more grip on uneven terrain. None of this takes away from that exceptional ability to flick over obstacles that was such a great trait of the 2016 model. If anything, the bike is better poised to take on bigger hits and burlier riding. The Fuel still climbs great, too. I left the shock wide open almost the entire ride, moving to a bit more damping only while riding an access road. The RE:aktiv damper still delivers on the promise of quick actuation, no matter where it is in the stroke.

The Remedy also delivers on the same promises. It climbs well, and switches between different types of terrain with no loss of precision—there's little need to change the shock or fork settings when making the transition between climbing and descending. It’s superbly balanced, and handled both big rollers and fast swoopy singletrack littered with tree roots, stumps, and bridges well.

All the new models are available now from Trek dealers and online through Trek’s online Trek Direct sales tool.  Pricing is as follows:

Trek Remedy 8 review

Can 650b wheels and non-DRCV fork put the Remedy on top?

Russell Burton

Steve Williams

trek remedy wsd

Trek’s Remedy is big brother to its popular 120mm Fuel EX trail bike, and Trek is one of the biggest traditional brands around. The latest Remedy 8 rolls on 650b wheels and 140mm of travel, having begun life with 26in and 160mm.

  • Highs: The Trek blasts rough lines and the Shimano kit is strong
  • Lows: Its weight and uninspiring dampers slow it both up and down
  • Buy If: You ride tight, rough stuff and want a bike that will last

Frame and equipment: crunching the numbers

The Remedy’s numbers are totally current, if you take geometry upstarts like Bird and Mondraker out of the equation. Our Large (19.5in) offers a 618mm effective top tube, which in combination with the 70mm Bontrager stem, gives plenty of room for a six-foot rider to breathe. At 435mm the chainstays are identical to Bird’s Aeris , but the Trek’s 1166mm wheelbase reveals a front-centre a whopping 41mm shorter – meaning you’ll get faster steering and lesser stability when it’s steep.

That head angle is a conservative 67.5 degrees, and while the Mino Link geometry adjustment chip can alter that, it’s only by 0.5 degrees and in the wrong direction – steeper, to 68 degrees. It’s not a bike that feels particularly slack, though a 50mm stem helps you master the 750mm bars.

We found the steering more controlled with a 50mm stem in place of the 70mm standard one

We found the steering more controlled with a 50mm stem in place of the 70mm standard one

You could get a longer front triangle by sizing up, but as with many frames the seat tubes get unnecessarily tall, especially if you’re fitting a dropper – this has Stealth routing but a standard post, but as it’s already 13.9kg (30.7lb) that may be a blessing. Swap the twin steel rings and solid Shimano crank for a single ring and hollow arms and you could drop nearly 700g easily.

Ride and handling: good in a tight spot

Despite Trek’s DRCV Fox shock having only the basic Evolution damping, its Full Floater suspension chews smoothly through horrible terrain. We sent it through big, fast rock gardens with low tyre pressures expecting hideous pinch punctures, but came through unscathed and impressed.

A downside is the lack of pop if you want to pump through berms, dips and jumps rather than blast over rubble. It’s pretty linear, with little platform to push against.

DRCV has been dropped from the fork, which is now a standard Fox 34 Float CTD set to 140mm. Disappointingly, it only has the basic Evolution damping

DRCV has been dropped from the fork, which is now a standard Fox 34 Float CTD set to 140mm. Disappointingly, it only has the basic Evolution damping

Trek’s ditched the DRCV up front, as it says Fox’s standard forks now have the spring curve it wants. It’s a plush performer and good on smoother ground, but the spiky Evolution damper is unsubtle – use the extra compression damping of Trail on rough, fast ground and it can actually blur your vision.

It’s great in very tight corners, where it snaps through with alacrity, and Bontrager’s aggressive XR4 front/faster XR3 rear tyre combo is confident in anything bar deep mud. The saddle and lock-on grips are good too, so contact points are sorted.
