Connect and travel with people your age.
While we have a slight different style than when we'd travel in our 20s , we're still looking for affordable trips so we can make travel a priority in our lives. Most of our travelers in their 30s and 40s come solo, but others come with friends, as a couple, but always leave the kids at home. Meet like-hearted folks, who want to be active, and know life doesn't end when you turn 30!
In 2008, Co-founders Jared O'Toole & Matt Wilson started the popular media site Under30CEO.com. In 2012, they founded Under30Experiences which was named the Fastest Growing Travel Company by Inc. Magazine. For years, people asked "what happens when we turn 30?" Over30Experiences is the answer.

Testimonials
“Head and Shoulders Above the Rest”
Having been on numerous group holidays with more than 5 different companies, my standards are high and I can honestly say that Other Way Round is head and shoulders above all of them.
“Not Mass Produced or Touristy”
What I loved about this trip was that it didn’t feel mass produced and touristy. There was a sense of originality to it and uniqueness about the trip and the itinerary .
“Completely Hassle Free”
I usually travel DIY, where I arrange and book everything myself, and it was such a welcome change to have all that time and stress of booking the different elements of the trip taken away from me.
“Trip of a Lifetime”
I will never forget this trip. Not only because of the country itself, but because of the experience that Other Way Round gave me and the other group members. It was a trip of a lifetime and you will be missing out if you don’t just book it!

MEET STEVE DILLON , FOUNDER OF OTHER WAY ROUND
“ I was in my 30s and didn’t really have anyone to go on holiday with. My friends were all off buying houses, getting married or having kids. I liked the idea of travelling with others but didn’t quite see myself as the tour group type. It all felt a bit, well, “touristy”. I came to realise that many people of my generation face a similar issue. They’re looking to meet and travel with people their age, but don’t want to sacrifice on authenticity. So that’s what we do. Adventurous trips. Exotic locations. Groups aged 30s & 40s. All with an immersive style of travel that allows for an authentic experience of the places you visit. I hope to see you soon. “

Peru for Insiders
I had a fantastic time in Peru! Breathtakingly beautiful scenery, delicious food, great people, amazing activities and visits to some amazing Inca sites! What more could one ask for? My personal favourite moments of the trip where visiting colca canyon to view the condors soaring over spectacular views, the mini hike to get back and to top it off a afternoon of relax in thermal baths! And the icing on the cake of the whole trip....The Inca trail! Seeing Machu Picchu appear infront of us as the sun sets on the view point after a day hike! Truly unforgettable!! Thank you Indico
Peru is a big country packed with things to do, and this was a really thoughtful and well-crafted itinerary. I would never be able to organise this trip alone. Here you will eat lots of delicious food, get lots of fresh air, and make lots of incredible memories. I really appreciated the way we climbed elevation, and then dropped down in altitude from Lake Titicaca into Cusco thus ensuring we were well acclimatised for the Inca trail. This was quite an active holiday with some early mornings, but there were opportunities to take it easy. E.g. the thermal springs after our visit to Colca Canyon was just perfect. The Inca trail day-hike was incredible, and whilst you don't need to be an experienced hiker I'd recommend if you can doing a couple of hikes around 10km before your trip. Our guide had spare walking poles, which I'd never used before but I found very useful when climbing the steps. Staying with Gregorio and his family by Lake Titicaca was also extremely special - I loved having the opportunity to get to know them. If possible, I'd also recommend learning as much Spanish as you're able to. If like me you're also into knitting and/or crochet you will get a lot of excitement and inspiration as well :) Our guide was from Cusco, and so being shown this area by him was a great experience and we got some excellent recommendations. I loved learning about the history of the country throughout our trip. Overall I absolutely loved this Indico adventure, & I highly recommend it!
Best of Lisbon & Sintra
For me it was the first vacation of this kind, and I thought a lot beforehand whether this was really exactly what I wanted... I can only say so much: Because of the magnificent organization in advance, the individual program during the trip and the super lovely tour guide Lina you made the trip to one of my highlights of this year.

Jordan: From Desert to Sea
Jordan positively surprised me with its diversity and cultural wealth. The trip brought us closer to the country and its people. Every day had its own highlight. From the city, to the desert and to the sea, we were delighted every day and well informed by our guide about cultural aspects and backgrounds. I highly recommend the country and this trip!!!
Enjoyed the trip to Jordon very much, got to experience the culture, history and see the different landscape of desert and sea during the 8 days trip. Highly recommended

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.
However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?
We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.
Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels
With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.
Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

- Find people in their 30s and 40s to travel with on a group adventure
Radha Vyas 24th Jan 2022 4 min read
For single professionals in their 30s and 40s, the quest to find a travel buddy can be a bit of a deal breaker when it comes to making a dream travel experience happen. This is why Flash Pack was created , to unite soloists to join together for adventures of a lifetime. But these are no ordinary group tours. Expect adventure-packed itineraries with luxury hotels and unforgettable experiences.
The best bit? You get to share the adventure with like-minded solo travelers in their 30s and 40s: the same life stage, the same age group and the same desire to travel the world.
For solo people at this point in their lives, we believe it’s the perfect time to meet new people and quench that thirst for wanderlust. Just choose your destination and we’ll set you up with fellow travelers ready to explore life off-the-beaten path. We’ll also put you in a position to make new friends and form unbreakable bonds.
Meet solo travelers in their 30s and 40s
The majority of group tours out there can be a bit of a (not so) lucky dip when it comes to who you’re traveling with. So, it may sound ruthless, but we’re really strict about keeping our adventures solely for single travelers aged in their 30s and 40s. In this age range, we find people want awesome adventures, balanced with luxury and comfort.
A large portion of our customers – 68%, in fact – have never been on a group tour before, often because they’ve had their career hat on and been busy carving out a successful life. Now, with a little more money under their belt, the nagging feeling of missing out on seeing the world is too strong to resist.
But as their friends settle down, have kids and head off on family holidays, trying to find people to travel with becomes increasingly difficult. That’s why we specifically target our marketing to get the right kind of Flashpacker on our trips. So, you won’t find 18 year olds looking for late nights or retirees in search of gentle coach tours.
Share meaningful experiences together
We’ve learned along the way one very simple equation: like-minded travelers + epic experiences = the best kind of friendships.
It seems that when a group of similarly aged people find themselves doing something new and exciting, this is the ultimate situation to meet new travel buddies and form beautiful bonds.
There’s something about pushing yourself beyond comfort zones together that ignites connection. Whether this is trekking to the colorful summit of Rainbow Mountain or bathing in geothermal pools in Iceland , these experiences create memories and friendships that last a lifetime.
Swerve the single supplement
On our adventures, you get to swerve the single supplement normally incurred when solo traveling, because instead we match you up with like-minded roommates.
This may seem a bold move at first, but we believe this is a really great way to get to know your fellow travelers. The rooms are all same gender, but we’re not talking bunk beds and lights out at 9pm.
Our accommodation is unique and consciously chosen – think converted safari trucks in the Serengeti and hideaway hotels on private islands in Finland . Whether you’re staying in the desert or glamping in the jungle , as a solo traveler, it’s so much more fun this way.
Get together for reunions
After all the memories you co-created with your fellow Flashpackers, we bet you’ll be planning a reunion as soon as you land.
We get that making new friends in your 30s and 40s alongside a hectic career can be rare, so we love bringing together like-minded adventure travelers that often remain friends for life.
Flashpacker Amanda who traveled to Vietnam with us, summed up the experience: “I truly believe that no one will understand the essence of a Flash Pack adventure until you have been through it yourself. I wouldn’t hesitate to do another Flash Pack trip, not just because of the amazing itineraries and destinations, but because what’s not to like about potentially making great friends for life?”.
Inspired? Join Flash Pack today to celebrate your 30s and 40s with other like-minded travelers.

Why travel with intrepid.
Bucket list itineraries
Sure, you can travel to India to see the Taj Mahal, but we like to share a laugh with a local chai wallah in the market while we’re at it. Our trips include loads of big-ticket attractions as well as plenty of unique and unexpected experiences you can only have with a local guide.
Legendary leaders
The best folks to show you around are the ones who live there. Our local leaders know these destinations like an old friend, so get ready to eat at the best street food joints, get to know the culture in depth and experience things you wouldn’t be able to on your own.
Creating positive change
We're on a mission to create positive change through the joy of travel. That’s why all our trips are carbon offset, and we give back to the communities we visit with the help of The Intrepid Foundation. When you travel with us, you travel with purpose.
Small groups
With an average group size of 10 people, our groups are big enough to create a good vibe but small enough to blend in with the locals. Whether you’re travelling solo or with mates, you’ll really get to know your group and will never be stuck for someone to grab a drink with.
Great value
Want big-time experiences without the big-time price tag? Our 18 to 35s travel style means staying in simple, well-located accommodation, taking local transport and enjoying tasty local food. This way, you choose where your spending money goes.
We’re committed to ensuring our trips are safe for everyone, including our travellers, our leaders, our crew and the people we visit along the way. That’s why we’re always up to date with world events and changes. Rest easy – you’ll be well taken care of.
Highlights of our 18 to 35s trips
Venture through Vietnam
From the old-world streets of Hanoi to the bustling Ho Chi Minh City – and all the temples, motorbikes and banh mi in between – adventures await in Vietnam. On this epic 11-day adventure from north to south, we’ll get you chomping and slurping pho-nomenal food, kayaking around Cat Ba island (away from the tourists), cycling through ride paddies and crossing hectic Vietnamese roads like a local in no time.
Munch your way through Mexico
Discover the real Mexico on an overland adventure from the sprawling metropolis of Mexico City to the white sand beaches and underground caverns of Playa del Carmen. Fill your belly with regional specialties in the foodie capital of Oaxaca (think everything from spicy mole to lime grasshoppers), uncover Mayan mysteries at Chichen Itza and swim in the dreamy Agua Azul waterfall.
Dive into India
Tick off the highlights of two iconic South Asian countries as you travel from lively Delhi to the patchouli-scented Kathmandu. Fall in love with the Taj Mahal, sail along the Ganges in the holy city of Varanasi, search for rhinos on a Chitwan Jungle safari and explore the remarkable Amber Fort in Jaipur – all that (and then some) in just 13 days.
See the best bits of Bali
There’s more to Bali than beaches and Bintang – though there'll be plenty of time to kick back with a cold one. Experience the highlights and hidden gems of Bali as you visit holy water temples, hike up the iconic Mt Batur volcano for sunrise, snorkel with sea turtles and dance in the golden hour glow of Seminyak's snazzy beach clubs.
Journey into Morocco
Get an authentic taste of Morocco as you travel through the High Atlas Mountains, the cultural capital of Fes and the chaotic medinas of Marrakesh. Sleep under the stars in a desert camp in the Sahara, meet nomadic shepherds at a traditional Berber village and learn the ancient art of mint tea making at a community-run teahouse that supports local women.
Discover the heart of Europe
Ticking off European favorites including Berlin, Krakow, Prague and Budapest, this is the Central Europe trip you’ve dreamed about. Enjoy dinners in busy medieval squares, explore stunning hilltop castles and sleep in ridiculously Instagrammable towns that look like they belong in a fairy tale.
18 to 35s trip reviews
Is every trip guaranteed to run.
Our trips are guaranteed to depart once they have one fully paid customer, unless the minimum group size listed in the Essential Trip Information and/or Special Conditions state otherwise.
Do you cater for food allergies/dietary requirements?
We’ll try our very hardest to accommodate all dietary requirements, but it can be difficult to guarantee in some out-of-the-way places. We'll let you know if there are places on your itinerary where this is the case. Please let us know your dietary requirements at the time of booking and we’ll pass the information on to your leader.
What’s the standard of accommodation on an 18 to35s trip?
You’ll be staying in simple, well-located accommodation with shared amenities, though it's common for rooms to be ensuite. Rooming is organized on a twin-share basis. We pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports.
If your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you. If you'd like your own space, most of our trips also have the option to pay a fee for an individual room.
Will the accommodation have wi-fi?
Most hotels, cafes and bars have wi-fi, especially in big cities and towns. In remote places (like the Sahara and the Amazon Rainforest) or on treks or homestays, you won’t be able to access Wi-Fi or mobile data as easily. Your leader will give you a heads-up beforehand so you can call home or send a quick WhatsApp.
Your leader can also help you buy a local SIM card if you'd like to stay connected.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance?
You sure do. Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Your leader will take down your insurance details on the first day in case they are needed during the trip, so make sure to bring your policy documents.
Learn more about travel insurance .
Do I need any travel vaccinations?
Vaccination requirements differ depending on the destination, and as we’re not medical practitioners, unfortunately we can't advise on this issue. Please see your local GP or travel doctor for details and advice about current vaccination requirements.
Learn more about entry and health requirements for the destination(s) you’ll be visiting .
Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to join an 18 to 35s trip?
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Meet our local leaders
"When you travel with me we'll be hanging out with the locals, tucking into the best street food and trying to master Vietnamese pronunciation (FYI, it's hard!). Whatever we do, we'll laugh a lot and make amazing memories together. Pack your best smile and count on me for the rest – I'll be your local buddy."
- Nhi Pham, Vietnam
“It will be a pleasure to share our traditions and beliefs, take you to the most amazing sites and, most importantly, interact with the locals! Get ready for a behind-the-scenes tour where we’ll visit hole-in-the-wall restaurants and find the best picarones (Andean doughnuts) *chef’s kiss. I’ll be waiting for you here, in my beloved Peru.
- Paul Garrido, Peru
"You might come to Vietnam for the beautiful scenery, but you'll stay for the friendly people! I love introducing travellers to locals and having a chit-chat, going on spontaneous walks to explore the hidden spots and sharing stories to keep our beautiful culture alive."
- Huyen Nguyen, Vietnam
Travel for good
We strive to use travel as a force for good. That's why every Intrepid trip is aligned with a relevant partner through The Intrepid Foundation and a donation is given for every trip booked. You can see which partner is aligned with a trip in the Essential Trip Information under ‘The Intrepid Foundation’.
Learn more about The Intrepid Foundation
We've got trips to suit every adventurer – no matter your budget, interests or travel style. If you can't travel on an 18 to 35s trip, you can always book a seat on one of our other trips, which are open to all ages!

Best Experience : Exodus Travels
Courtesy of Exodus Travels
Traveling solo on an Exodus Travels group trip means access to self-guided and guided excursions around the world for every type of traveler. Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.
There is no single supplement fee when you room with a fellow traveler, and chances are you may end up with your own room anyway. Booking a travel itinerary with UK-based Exodus Travels includes a full refund should the company need to cancel your trip and a complimentary trip transfer to another tour or different person up to 21 days before the scheduled trip. Plus, travelers who book their third or more trips with Exodus receive a 5 percent discount on their next booking.
What’s more, the company works to curate trips that align with a number of United Nations sustainable development goals including goals for responsible consumption and production, empowering local communities, and climate action considerations. Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.
Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel
Courtesy of Encounter Travel
According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.
All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.
Best Sustainable : G Adventures
Courtesy of Intrepid Travel
G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.
Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.
A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.
G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.
Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato
Courtesy of G Adventures
Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.
Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.
In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.
Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel
Courtesy of Contiki
With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.
According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”
In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.
FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.
Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates
Courtesy Flash Pack
Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.
Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.
The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.
Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.
Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions
Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel
It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).
The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.
Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.
Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel
Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions
Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.
For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.
Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

Know before you go
Never traveled solo or gone as part of a group before? We can get you sorted. Check out some of our most frequently asked questions or get in touch with us any time.
We offer the “My Own Room” option on most of our tours, which guarantees you a room of your own for a modest additional fee. Cost and details of “My Own Room” vary according to the specific trip, so be sure to consult our trip summary pages for full details. On some tours, a single room may not be available at certain overnight stops, depending on the style of accommodation.
Wherever your heart takes you! Just about any place worth exploring is a good spot to venture out on your own.
Our groups often experience a good mix of ages, everything from travellers in their early-20s to those aged 60 and over. We sort all of our trips into Travel Styles, which guarantee that you’ll be travelling with people who share the same interests you do. Over the years, we’ve found that a good range of ages within a group often adds to the experience
On most evenings, your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) will organize a group meal. It’s pretty flexible; you can choose to dine with the group or head off and do your own thing. Other nights, your CEO may recommend a few nearby restaurants you can try. Again, you determine whether you want to stick with the group or go it alone.
Most of our trips split pretty evenly down gender lines. We average roughly 60:40 female-to-male, so you’ll never feel outnumbered.
On most G Adventures tours, the ratio of solo travellers to others (couples, friends travelling together, etc) is roughly 40:60. For privacy reasons, we can’t share information about your soon-to-be travelling companions ahead of time. Our tours appeal to a wide cross-section of adventurous people from all over the world united by a desire to experience our planet from a grassroots level. Our tours are conducted in English and tend to attract travellers from North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

An introvert's guide to surviving group travel
By monica pitrelli,cnbc • published april 14, 2024 • updated on april 17, 2024 at 9:08 pm.
The thought of round-the-clock "togetherness" — with friends, family or strangers bound together in a tour group — can be overwhelming to the estimated 57% of people who lean toward introversion .
Solo travel can suit introverts, who tend to re-energize by time spent alone. But even as its popularity increases, most trips are taken with other people.
But most uncomfortable moments can be avoided by following some of these ground rules, offered by fellow introverts.
Rule 1: The 'golden rule' of group travel
We're making it easier for you to find stories that matter with our new newsletter — The 4Front. Sign up here and get news that is important for you to your inbox.
The most popular recommendation by far: Book your own room.
"This allows for morning and evening downtime to defuse, regroup and refresh," said Jenny Olsen, a Los Angeles-based public relations consultant who describes herself as a "total introverted traveler."
Bitcoin just completed its fourth-ever ‘halving,' here's what investors need to watch now
The Bitcoin network completes the fourth-ever ‘halving' of rewards to miners
If you have to share a room, she said, try to sleep in. "Then order room service to have breakfast alone in bed."
In fact, Olsen advises ordering room service once a day, whether "breakfast, dinner or a late night dessert."
Dori Nix, a marketing and communications director for the Colorado-based women-led tour company Adventures in Good Company , also recommends staying alone, even if means paying a single supplement.
"Having a space to decompress at the end of each day is often the only way I can function in social environments throughout the day," she said. "It's a safe place to escape."
Rule No. 2: Don't get trapped by talkers
In Psychology Today , author Sophia Dembling cautions introverts to research group trips well.
"A tour bus full of first-timers to Europe might include a lot of mighty friendly folks who love making friends," she wrote. "And I don't mean that in a good way."
Headphones are a good way to ward off unwanted conversations, especially on flights, said John Hackston, head of thought leadership at the The Myers-Briggs Company .
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment is a popular test to determine introversion and extroversion tendencies, terms popularized by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung more than a century ago.
Conversing with strangers can be uncomfortable for some introverts, Hackston said. He suggests having a exit strategy.
"Be ready to 'go to the restroom' or 'leave to make a phone call' if you need to get away," he said.
What type of trips should introverts avoid?
- Large travel groups (30+ travelers)
- Packed schedules
- Crowded locations and party destinations
- Constant social interaction
- Where double occupancy is the only option
- A lot of driving time
Source: Kelly Kimple and Dori Nix, Adventures in Good Company
Travel writer Patty Civalleri also said introverts shouldn't be passive in these situations. Her advice: Don't allow yourself to be trapped by an endless talker.
"When you feel the need to break out of a conversation, simply look over the shoulder of the person talking and say something like 'Wow, look over there. That looks interesting. Excuse me while I go check it out,'" she emailed CNBC Travel while on a group trip to Mazatlán, Mexico, "Or 'I see a great photo, or selfie, opp. I'm going to grab it before it gets away."
Rule No. 3: Own the need for 'alone time'
Talk to your travel companions before the trip, said Jonathan Feniak, general counsel at legal firm LLC Attorney.
"When I was younger, I didn't realize I needed a little bit of alone time to keep my social batteries charged," he said. "After 7+ days spent traveling with people 24/7, it becomes harder to maintain that energy without an hour here or there, so I now tell any companions about those needs ahead of time."
That lets people know they're not "the problem," he said.
"If they don't know about your introverted personality until you're mid-vacation, they may misinterpret your energy or take it personally," he said.
Though Western societies have long rewarded extroverted "more is merrier" types, there is nothing wrong with wanting space from the group, said Civalleri.
"Never feel shy about asking for alone time. We all need some time off from others, from activities and from the world," she told CNBC Travel. "Time to simply relax by the pool alone with a book can be very therapeutic."
The Myers-Briggs Company's Hackston said introverts should set boundaries on vacation, which may mean doing their own thing at times.
"You don't have to attend every minute of every activity your group has planned," he said. "Spending hours in a library or a museum can be boring for some, but if this is your cup of tea, make time to explore it at your own pace."
Rule 4: Keep groups small, but not too small
Adventures in Good Company CEO Kelly Kimple has a rule: no big tour buses.
"As an introvert, I definitely need small groups," she said. "I also need to minimize time in vehicles. Long drives in a small space where can be caught up in hours of conversations can be exhausting for introverts!"
Kimple, a field biologist from rural New Hampshire, said she prefers trips with ample quiet time. Her company organizes outdoor trips for small groups of women that include activties like hiking and even sketching in the Rocky Mountains.
Some introverts prefer solo travel, but Brooke Webber, a Los Angeles-based marketing professional, said she advises traveling with a small group.
"More people might sound like a nightmare for a true introvert, but for me it made it easier to have 'me-time' as necessary," she said. "If you travel in a group of 3+ people, you aren't leaving a companion alone if you want to take a few hours or a day to explore solo or rest."
Having the option to break away at a moment's notice keeps Webber energized, she said, and "less likely to need to take it because I feel my social time is an option, not an obligation."
David Ciccarelli, CEO of the vacation rental website Lake, said he's also a fan of traveling with a small group of friends, occasionally choosing to dip out to later "come back into the fold."
He advises packing a few items to help tune out the world.
"My earplugs and eye mask are a necessity," he said. "They help me wind down at night and get some privacy on long train rides, flights, or an afternoon nap in the hotel room."

Delta is changing how it boards passengers starting May 1
By Megan Cerullo
Edited By Aimee Picchi
Updated on: April 12, 2024 / 12:35 PM EDT / CBS News
Delta Air Lines is changing its boarding process beginning May 1 in an effort to speed up loading passengers onto planes.
If you're flying on the airline, you'll have to know what zone number you're in to board in the correct sequence. The move is hardly innovative, experts say, and instead reflects a return to the traditional way of boarding passengers followed by most airlines.
That's because Delta is introducing numbered boarding zones for all flights, meaning that customers will have a zone number assigned to them instead of boarding groups labelled by airline status or fare class, such as "Sky Priority." The airline stressed that boarding orders will not change, but the group names will.
When Delta introduced its branded fare boarding process in 2018, it called zone boarding "a thing of the past." But the airline is now reverting to the traditional way of boarding people, in what some experts call an unusual move for an innovative airline.
Customers who need more assistance will still pre-board as usual before passengers in Zone 1, which will comprise Delta One and First Class customers. Zone 2 will include Diamond Medallion Members and Delta Premium Select ticket holders.
Delta Comfort+ customers will board in Zone 3, followed by Sky Priority in Zone 4, according to a chart on the airline's website. Zone numbers will go up to 8, when basic economy passengers will board.
Delta said the change is small, but could make the process easier for infrequent fliers and non-English speakers who only have to listen for a number to know when it's their turn to board. The change will also make the process less stressful for gate agents, Delta added.
Still, some travel experts questioned whether the change would meaningfully speed up the boarding process.
"They're not changing who boards when or the sequence," Clarkson University professor John Milne, an expert on airline boarding, told CBS MoneyWatch. "All they are changing is the names of what passenger group boards next."
In a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, Delta said the "simple change" will "provide customers more clarity into the boarding sequence and make the boarding process more intuitive—especially for infrequent travelers and/or customers who might face a language barrier at the gate."
Delta added, "Numbered zones will also align more closely with our joint venture and international partners, providing international customers a more simplified, consistent experience when traveling on mixed-metal itineraries. "
CEO Ed Bastian addressed the change on the company's first quarter earnings call Wednesday. "When you have a number and you're standing in line, we are all trained to know when it's our turn," Bastian said.
Superficial changes?
The change is fairly superficial, Milne said, noting there are other changes Delta and its competitors could make to boarding processes that would make them more efficient.
The airline still prioritizes passengers with airline status or who paid for a higher class fare on a particular flight. Instead, it would be more efficient to board passengers based on where on the aircraft they are seated, Milne said.
For example, boarding window seat customers in the back half of the plane first would speed up the process. "That way you would minimize some of the congestion," he said.
Delta instead assigns passengers to boarding groups based on their loyalty to the airline and ticket prices.
Travel expert Scott Keyes also emphasized that the change does little to meaningfully improve or expedite the boarding process. All Delta is doing is reverting to the traditional way of boarding passengers and scrapping its branded boarding process that began in 2018, he noted.
"The fact that they've reverted to numbered zones, like those employed by virtually all other airlines, speaks volumes," Keyes said. "Traditionally, Delta has been seen as the innovative airline and others have followed suit. In this case, Delta's innovation didn't pan out, and they've been forced to once again mimic American and United's boarding processes."
To be sure, any move that would actually speed up passenger boarding could give an airline a leg up on competitors.
"Speeding up the boarding process by even 10 minutes can prevent delays, and if sustained, allow airlines to add an additional daily flight to the schedule," Keyes said.
The airline posted a $37 million first-quarter profit on Wednesday and said demand for air travel is strong heading into the busy summer travel season. Travelers are flocking to book trips despite a string of recent air safety incidents, including a panel blowing off a Boeing 737 Max aircraft during an Alaska Airlines flight.

Royal Mail owner received takeover offer from Czech billionaire
IDS shares rise after reports that it rejected bid from Daniel Křetínský’s EP Group
- Comment: Royal Mail bid should be treated with deep scepticism
The owner of Royal Mail received a £3bn takeover offer from a Czech billionaire who has stakes in Sainsbury’s and West Ham United football club. Daniel Křetínský approached International Distributions Services (IDS), the owner of the struggling British postal company, this month.
In a statement , Křetínský’s EP Group said the proposal, made on 9 April, was rejected by IDS but that it “looks forward to continuing to engage constructively with the board”.
IDS said its board had “unanimously” rejected the proposal on 11 April and that Křetínský had offered 320p a share, valuing the group at £3.1bn – a significant premium on the group’s share price before his interest emerged.
Shares in IDS increased by 29% to 276p on news of Křetínský’s interest, valuing the company at £2.6bn.
Křetínský has built up a 27.5% stake in Royal Mail through his investment vehicle, Vesa. The tycoon, known as the “Czech Sphinx” for his inscrutable approach, has a string of business interests, from energy to media assets to football clubs.
EP Group said it recognised that “Royal Mail is in a challenging situation”.
“Weak financial performance, poor service delivery and a slow transformation, in the face of a market going through structural change, have put the business under unsustainable pressure,” it said. “With the increasing competition from multinational companies in the UK postal market, private investment in Royal Mail becomes crucial.
“EP Group also recognises that Royal Mail is an important national asset that would benefit from being able to take a longer-term view and is prepared to support this iconic business as it transforms and rebuilds into a modern postal operator.”
IDS said: “The board believes the timing of the proposal is opportunistic. It does not reflect the growth potential and prospects of the company under a new management team, a significant modernisation programme under way at Royal Mail, and the ongoing review by Ofcom.”
The IDS group comprises Royal Mail, which has a mandate to deliver nationwide in the UK at a fixed price six days a week under the universal service obligation, and General Logistics Group, an international parcels group based in Amsterdam.
EP has until 15 May either to announce a firm intention to make an offer for IDS or to walk away.
The takeover approach comes as Royal Mail, under group chief executive Martin Seidenberg, who joined last year , reaches a crossroads in its corporate future. The industry regulator, Ofcom, has opened the door for the postal firm to scale back its universal service obligations in the face of mounting losses.
Earlier this year, Ofcom laid out a series of options for the future of the postal service, including cutting it from six days a week to five or even three, with a more expensive option retained to allow for next-day deliveries.
Rishi Sunak said the government would oppose any reduction in the six-day service. In response, Royal Mail has asked the industry regulator to let it reduce deliveries of second-class letters to just two or three days a week , cutting nearly 1,000 jobs and saving £300m a year in the process.
after newsletter promotion
Any takeover bid would be studied by the government under national security laws. In 2022, the government told Royal Mail it would study an increase in Křetínský’s stake under the National Security and Investment Act. However, that investigation was called off later in the year.
Jeremy Hunt refused to comment on the possible takeover of Royal Mail but said it was important to put in place the right regulation for former private sector monopolies.
“We need to make sure companies are regulated in a way that what happens to the balance sheet doesn’t do damage to public services,” the chancellor told reporters in Washington on Wednesday night.
Labour has yet to clarify its position on the future of Royal Mail, although Kate Osborne, the Labour MP for Jarrow, who worked at the company for 25 years, has said she would like to see it renationalised .
Dave Ward, the general secretary of the Communication Workers Union, said: “The truth is, handing over the ownership of one of the UK’s most prestigious institutions to a foreign equity investor cannot be right. But neither is the current model or direction of the company.
“Royal Mail needs a new ownership and governance model that builds a postal service for the workers and customers, and not one solely focused on shareholder payouts and driving down the service and the terms and conditions of the workers.”
Křetínský was born in communist Czechoslovakia in 1975, the son of a judge and a computer science professor. He built an empire of European energy companies, snapping up fossil fuel assets.
Last year a company owned by Křetínský was ordered to pay £23m after the energy watchdog found that it had unfairly demanded excessive payments for one of the UK’s biggest power stations.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Two Kansas women who vanished as they tried to pick up children for a birthday party two weeks ago were killed over a custody dispute involving a group of anti-government Oklahomans calling themselves “God’s Misfits,” authorities said Monday.
Their vehicle was found March 30 along a rural Oklahoma highway with ample evidence of a bloody confrontation, setting off a multi-agency effort to secure the children’s safety while searching for the women and avoiding more violence.
Veronica Butler, 27, and Jilian Kelley, 39, of Hugoton, Kansas, had arranged with the grandmother of Butler’s two children to meet at a highway intersection on the morning of March 30 and pick up the 6- and 8-year-old.
“This case did not end the way we had hoped. It’s certainly been a tragedy for everyone involved,” Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Director Aungela Spurlock said.
The four people arrested Saturday on charges of kidnapping and first-degree murder are the grandmother, Tifany Adams, 54; her boyfriend Tad Cullum, 43; Cora Twombly, 44; and her husband Cole Twombly, 50. All meet regularly with several others in a group they call “God’s Misfits,” their arrest affidavits said. Relatives of Tad Cullum and the Twomblys did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment. Tifany Adams’ stepmother, Elise Adams, said she had no information on the case.
Butler’s family found the vehicle just a few miles from the meet-up spot after the women missed the party in Kansas. It was a gruesome scene.
“Blood was found on the roadway and the edge of the roadway. Butler’s glasses were also found in the roadway south of the vehicle, near a broken hammer. A pistol magazine was found inside Kelley’s purse at the scene, but no pistol was found,” the affidavits said.
Investigators gathered evidence that the killings were planned, with Adams buying pre-paid “burner” cellphones to communicate and five stun guns at a nearby store. Her internet searches included asking about pain levels using the weapons, the affidavits said.
A teenage witness told authorities that Cora Twombly said that at one point, “the plan was to throw an anvil through Butler’s windshield while driving, making it look like an accident because anvils regularly fall off of work vehicles.”
The affidavits said Butler and Adams were in a “problematic custody battle.” Adams’ son was in a rehabilitation facility hours away in Oklahoma City, and Butler was allowed only supervised visits each Saturday. Kelley, the wife of a pastor in Hugoton, was Butler’s court-authorized choice to supervise visitations.
The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals had directed a trial judge in 2022 to give the children’s parents shared custody. The ruling described them as “very young and immature parents” who accused each other of “inappropriate behavior and choices,” but said “the children are nurtured and comforted by Mother” and ”happy and excited to be with Father.”
Butler’s request for more time with her children and unsupervised visitation was likely to be granted at a hearing in April, Butler’s attorney told investigators.
On March 23, with a court date looming, Adams bought the stun guns. On March 29, Cullum used heavy equipment to dig a hole in a pasture he rented, not far from the meet-up site, the affidavits said.
Authorities wouldn’t say at Monday’s news conference where the bodies were found, but the affidavits said some of the “burner phones” stopped transmitting that morning in the vicinity of the pasture, where “a hole had been dug and filled back in and then covered with hay.”
It wasn’t entirely clear where the children were during the search. Adams told investigators that she had left them in the care of another couple on March 29 and 30; the affidavits said that couple regularly hosted the “God’s Misfits” meetings.
Authorities said the affidavits weren’t unsealed until after the children’s safety was assured. “We were successful. No shots were fired and the children were kept out of harm’s way,” said District Attorney George Leach III.
The four people charged are being held without bond in the Texas County Jail pending court appearances Wednesday, said Texas County Court Clerk Renee Ellis. Court records don’t indicate whether any have an attorney speak on their behalf.
“I don’t know a thing about her business,” Elise Adams said when asked about Tifany Adams. “All I can tell you about her is she was a wonderful step-daughter to me.”
OSBI spokesman Hunter McKee said the bodies’ identities and causes of death are pending a medical examiner’s report.
“This case is tragic,” McKee said. “You have two people who are dead and four people who committed an absolutely brutal crime.”

35 Vintage Las Vegas Photos: A Retro Time Travel To Sin City
Posted: April 19, 2024 | Last updated: April 19, 2024
Las Vegas has developed quite a reputation over the years. With its wealth of casinos and wedding chapels, you’re never short of venues to make questionable decisions.
From showgirls dazzling onstage to celebrities dining together, these pictures give you a glimpse of what life was like back in the day. If you weren’t fortunate enough to be around when Vegas was born, now’s the time to educate yourself on the city’s golden era.
Bright Lights, Big City
At night, Vegas truly comes to life thanks to the neon signs adorning all the casinos, and it’s on Fremont Street that they shine brightest. With icons like the Golden Nugget, it was impossible to miss this street back in the ‘50s.
Gambling For Peanuts
Back in the ‘60s, it wasn’t out of the question for an elephant to be in attendance at a casino. This gambling animal, who went by the name of Tanya, was involved in a performance at the venue.
Best Of Both Worlds
The Sands Hotel was so determined to give their customers the best possible experience. Anyone who wanted to try their luck at gambling, got to enjoy the best of both worlds.
Taking A Break
In the early days, the Rat Pack dominated the scene, with men like Sammy Davis Jr. responsible for entertaining thousands of visitors on a daily basis. Of course, they weren’t always on the clock.
We Sisters Three
Female celebrities spent a lot of time in Sin City too, including the famous Gabor sisters. The women attracted a lot of attention with the three sisters collectively getting married twenty times.
Dinner And A Show
You were in for a real treat if you caught a performance of the Rat Pack while you were in Vegas. Luckily, the suave entertainers were such regulars at the clubs in Sin City that it was hard to miss them.
Traveling From All Over
A group known as the Bluebell Girls came all the way from Paris to enchant the Vegas audiences and put on a performance the people would never forget. They proved to be a massive hit during the ‘50s.
Dining With The Stars
Once it developed a reputation for being one of America’s most cultural party spots, celebrities flocked to the city. There were so many of them that it was hard not to spot at least one famous face while you were out and about.
The King Of Vegas
There was one person who commanded a stage better than anyone else, though. Elvis Presley knew what his fans wanted, and he gave it to them in bucketfuls.
An Iconic Performer
Nothing says Sin City more than one of America’s greatest musical icons surrounded by a collection of stunning showgirls. The singer in question is, of course, Frank Sinatra.
Life Of The Party
Sinatra wasn’t the only man who built a reputation for himself at the Sands Hotel. His fellow Rat Pack members Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin, all of whom propelled Las Vegas into the spotlight.
The Original Daredevil
Evel Knievel wanted to prove his worth by jumping the fountains outside Caesars Palace but he didn’t quite make it. Instead, he ended up in a coma for almost a month, though he thankfully lived to tell the tale.
Putting On A Show
You can’t talk about Las Vegas without mentioning the showgirls. Their extravagant outfits and love for performing are part of what makes Sin City such a popular party venue.
Signing Autographs
Among some of Vegas’ biggest guests was the King of Rock n’ Roll himself. Elvis Presley was a firm favorite in Las Vegas, regularly performing for the masses at hotels all along the famous strip.
A Musical Shift
It wasn’t just the King of Rock n’ Roll that made a big impact in Vegas. Lillian Briggs, AKA the Queen of Rock n’ Roll, made a huge impact in Vegas during the ‘50s.
Taking A Dip
The Stardust sits up there with some of the very best in the city. After opening in the late ‘50s, it soon became a hub of activity thanks to its regular performances and extravagant casino.
Behind The Scenes
While audiences only ever got to see what the showgirls got up to on stage, plenty went on behind the scenes. Things were often frantic backstage as the girls hurried around trying to get ready.
Breakfast In Las Vegas
Las Vegas really did attract some of the biggest names in the business. When you think of iconic actresses from the ‘50s and ‘60s, Audrey Hepburn probably comes to mind.
Cooling Off
Although things have only gotten warmer over the years, they were still pretty hot during the early days of Vegas. It’s no wonder then that these guests felt the need to cool off while staying at the El Rancho Hotel.
From A Distance
This is how Sin City used to be in the mid-‘60s before Vegas truly became the party capital of North America. As you can see, it was bustling with activity, but it had yet to reach the level of development that we’re now accustomed to.
Breakfast In The Pool
We’re used to asking for breakfast in bed, but what about breakfast in the pool? Even though it sounds like a bizarre request, remember that this is Las Vegas we’re dealing with here.
Symbol Of The City
The neon lights of Las Vegas are an iconic symbol of the city, but there’s one that catches people’s attention more than most. Vegas Vic, the mascot of the Pioneer Club.
Keeping Things Clean
A bit of mess was to be expected in the casinos, especially with them being so busy, but someone would always have to clean them up afterward. That’s where people like this man came in.
From The Ground Up
As hotels and casinos became successful, more of them began to appear. Signs like this one were erected by existing businesses to try and attract more interest in the area (and put more money in their bank accounts).
One More Pull
It feels like there’s no image more representative of classic Vegas than this one. The slot machines were (and still are) such an essential part of the casinos.
Best Of The Best
Tourists had their pick of dozens of renowned venues to spend their money, but all of these places wanted to be every person’s first choice.
The City Of Love
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward weren’t the only famous faces who thought Vegas was the perfect place to tie the knot. Brigitte Bardot and Gunther Sachs Von Opel also married there.
Riding In Style
These shuttle buses probably aren’t something that you’d drive around in now, but they were top of the line automobiles for the Sands Hotel in the ‘50s and ‘60s.
A Man In His Element
One man who was very much involved with bringing Las Vegas to people’s attention was Noel Coward. Billed as an Oscar Wilde type, his cabaret shows were a huge attraction for tourists in the ‘50s.
An Astounding Transformation
This photo was taken back in 1905, and it’s hard to believe that it’s the same Las Vegas that we’re familiar with today. This is how Fremont Street looked at the turn of the 20th century, and there wasn’t a neon sign in sight.
Seedy History
When the Flamingo arrived on the strip back in the ‘40s, it was the first luxury hotel in the area. The man who paid for the establishment was none other than Bugsy Siegel, a famous mobster.
A Marriage For The Ages
Vegas marriages never used to be quite so spontaneous. Back in the ‘50s, many couples tied the knot in the city because they wanted to do it somewhere with class and sophistication.
Need Any Help?
Imagine if it was your job to go around giving people money so they could continue to gamble. Well, that’s basically what the “Change Girls” were responsible for in Vegas’ early days.
A Different Point Of View
When the neon lights of Vegas aren’t illuminating the night sky, the city looks quite a bit different, doesn’t it? This is how Fremont Street was during the day all the way back in the early ‘50s.

What we know about unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S.
The unauthorized immigrant population in the United States reached 10.5 million in 2021, according to new Pew Research Center estimates. That was a modest increase over 2019 but nearly identical to 2017.
The number of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2021 remained below its peak of 12.2 million in 2007. It was about the same size as in 2004 and lower than every year from 2005 to 2015.
The new estimates do not reflect changes that have occurred since apprehensions and expulsions of migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border started increasing in March 2021 . Migrant encounters at the border have since reached historic highs .
Pew Research Center undertook this research to understand ongoing changes in the size and characteristics of the unauthorized immigrant population in the United States. The Center has published estimates of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population for more than two decades. The estimates presented in this research are the Center’s latest, adding new and updated annual estimates for 2017 through 2021.
Center estimates of the unauthorized immigrant population use a “residual method.” It is similar to methods used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics and nongovernmental organizations, including the Center for Migration Studies and the Migration Policy Institute . Those organizations’ estimates are generally consistent with ours. Our estimates also align with official U.S. data sources, including birth records, school enrollment figures and tax data, as well as Mexican censuses and surveys.
Our “residual” method for estimating the nation’s unauthorized immigrant population includes these steps:
- Estimate the total number of immigrants living in the country in a particular year using data from U.S. censuses and government surveys such as the American Community Survey and the Current Population Survey.
- Estimate the number of immigrants living in the U.S. legally using official counts of immigrant and refugee admissions together with other demographic data (for example, death and out-migration rates).
- Subtract our estimate of lawful immigrants from our estimate of the total immigrant population . This provides an initial estimate of the unauthorized immigrant population .
Our final estimate of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population, as well as estimates for lawful immigrants, includes an upward adjustment. We do this because censuses and surveys tend to miss some people . Undercounts for immigrants, especially unauthorized immigrants, tend to be higher than for other groups. (Our 1990 estimate comes from work by Robert Warren and John Robert Warren; details can be found here .)
The term “unauthorized immigrant” reflects standard and customary usage by many academic researchers and policy analysts. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics also generally uses it. The term means the same thing as undocumented immigrants, illegal immigrants and illegal aliens.
For more details on how we produced our estimates, read the Methodology section of our November 2018 report on unauthorized immigrants.
The unauthorized immigrant population includes any immigrants not in the following groups:
- Immigrants admitted for lawful residence (i.e., green card admissions)
- People admitted formally as refugees
- People granted asylum
- Former unauthorized immigrants granted legal residence under the 1985 Immigration Reform and Control Act
- Immigrants admitted under any of categories 1-4 who have become naturalized U.S. citizens
- Individuals admitted as lawful temporary residents under specific visa categories
Read the Methodology section of our November 2018 report on unauthorized immigrants for more details.
Pew Research Center’s estimate of unauthorized immigrants includes more than 2 million immigrants who have temporary permission to be in the United States. (Some also have permission to work in the country.) These immigrants account for about 20% of our national estimate of 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants for 2021.
Although these immigrants have permission to be in the country, they could be subject to deportation if government policy changes. Other organizations and the federal government also include these immigrants in their estimates of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population.
Immigrants can receive temporary permission to be in the U.S. through the following ways:
Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
In 2021, there were about 500,000 unauthorized immigrants with Temporary Protected Status . This status provides protection from removal or deportation to individuals who cannot safely return to their country because of civil unrest, violence or natural disaster.
Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) is a similar program that grants protection from removal. The number of immigrants with DED is much smaller than the number with TPS.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is a program that offers protection from deportation to individuals who were brought to the U.S. as children before June 15, 2007. As of the end of 2021, there were slightly more than 600,000 DACA beneficiaries , largely immigrants from Mexico.
Asylum applicants
Individuals who have applied for asylum but are awaiting a ruling are not legal residents yet but cannot be deported. There are two types of asylum claims, defensive and affirmative .
Defensive asylum applications are generally filed by individuals facing deportation or removal from the U.S. These are processed by the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review. At the end of 2021, there were almost 600,000 applications pending.
Affirmative asylum claims are made by individuals already in the U.S. who are not in the process of being deported or removed. These claims are handled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). At the end of 2021, more than 400,000 applications for affirmative asylum were pending, some covering more than one applicant.
Here are key findings about how the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population changed from 2017 to 2021:
- The most common country of birth for unauthorized immigrants is Mexico. However, the population of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico dropped by 900,000 from 2017 to 2021 , to 4.1 million.
- There were increases in unauthorized immigrants from nearly every other region of the world – Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Asia, Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.
- Among U.S. states, only Florida and Washington saw increases to their unauthorized immigrant populations , while California and Nevada saw decreases. In all other states, unauthorized immigrant populations were unchanged.
- 4.6% of U.S. workers in 2021 were unauthorized immigrants , virtually identical to the share in 2017.
Trends in the U.S. immigrant population
The U.S. foreign-born population was 14.1% of the nation’s population in 2021. That was very slightly higher than in the last five years but below the record high of 14.8% in 1890.
As of 2021, the nation’s 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants represented about 3% of the total U.S. population and 22% of the foreign-born population. These shares were among the lowest since the 1990s.
Between 2007 and 2021, the unauthorized immigrant population decreased by 1.75 million, or 14%.
Meanwhile, the lawful immigrant population grew by more than 8 million, a 29% increase, and the number of naturalized U.S. citizens grew by 49%. In 2021, naturalized citizens accounted for about half (49%) of all immigrants in the country.
Where unauthorized immigrants come from
Unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. come from many parts of the world, with Mexico being the most common origin country.
The origin countries for unauthorized immigrants have changed since the population peaked in 2007, before the Great Recession slowed immigration. Here are some highlights of those changes:
The number of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico living in the U.S. (4.1 million in 2021) was the lowest since the 1990s. Mexico accounted for 39% of the nation’s unauthorized immigrants in 2021, by far the smallest share on record .
The decrease in unauthorized immigrants from Mexico reflects several factors:
- A broader decline in migration from Mexico to the U.S.
- Mexican immigrants to the U.S. continuing to return to Mexico
- Expanded opportunities for lawful immigration from Mexico and other countries, especially for temporary agricultural workers.
The rest of the world
The total number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. from countries other than Mexico has grown rapidly. In 2021, this population was 6.4 million, up by 900,000 from 2017.
Almost every region in the world had a notable increase in the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. from 2007 to 2021. The largest increases were from Central America (240,000) and South and East Asia (180,000).
After Mexico, the countries of origin with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations in the U.S. in 2021 were:
- El Salvador (800,000)
- India (725,000)
- Guatemala (700,000)
- Honduras (525,000)
India, Guatemala and Honduras all saw increases from 2017.
The Northern Triangle
Three Central American countries – El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala – together represented 2.0 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2021, or almost 20% of the total. The unauthorized immigrant population from the Northern Triangle grew by about 250,000 from 2017 and about 700,000 from 2007.
Other origin countries
Venezuela was the country of birth for 190,000 U.S. unauthorized immigrants in 2021. This population saw particularly fast growth, from 130,000 in 2017 and 55,000 in 2007.
Among countries with the largest numbers of U.S. unauthorized immigrants, India, Brazil, Canada and former Soviet Union countries all experienced growth from 2017 to 2021.
Some origin countries with significant unauthorized immigrant populations showed no change, notably China (375,000) and the Dominican Republic (230,000).

U.S. states of residence of unauthorized immigrants
The unauthorized immigrant population in most U.S. states stayed steady from 2017 to 2021. However, four states saw significant changes:
- Florida (+80,000)
- Washington (+60,000)
- California (-150,000)
- Nevada (-25,000)
States with the most unauthorized immigrants
The six states with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations in 2021 were:
- California (1.9 million)
- Texas (1.6 million)
- Florida (900,000)
- New York (600,000)
- New Jersey (450,000)
- Illinois (400,000)
These states have consistently had the most unauthorized immigrants since 1990 and earlier .
At the same time, the unauthorized immigrant population has become less geographically concentrated. In 2021, these six states were home to 56% of the nation’s unauthorized immigrants, down from 80% in 1990.

Unauthorized immigrants in the labor force
The share of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. workforce was slightly less than 5% in 2021, compared with 3% of the total U.S. population.
Demographics help explain the difference: The unauthorized immigrant population includes relatively few children or elderly adults, groups that tend not to be in the labor force.
Overall, about 7.8 million unauthorized immigrants were in the U.S. labor force in 2021. That was up slightly from 2019 but smaller than every year from 2007 through 2015.
Detailed table: Unauthorized immigrants in the labor force for states, 2021 (Excel)
Here are some additional findings about unauthorized immigrants as a share of the workforce nationwide and in certain states:
- Since 2003, unauthorized immigrants have made up 4.4% to 5.4% of all U.S. workers, a relatively narrow range.
- Fewer than 1% of workers in Maine, Montana, Vermont and West Virginia in 2021 were unauthorized immigrants.
- Nevada (9%) and Texas (8%) had the highest shares of unauthorized immigrants in the workforce.
