I thought we might meet a Gulliver rep at the event but didn't. Anyway hotel was good except one of their sponsors (tiqet) scammed me out of 300 Euro for a tour to Naples. They fudged the departure time so I'd miss the bus and then go silent. The bus driving back and forth was a bit scary but we always made it! The Ryder Cup itself was great entertainment.

Thank you for your review. We apologise if you did not see a Rep on your trip, but would like to point out that we give all our clients the phone number of our reps that are on tour, in case you need to contact them. We do not work with that sponsor and would not allow this type of behaviour from one of our partners. We are pleased you enjoyed the event overall though, and hope we do see you again on a future trip!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable break that we both enjoyed and nice to see Wales win . I enjoyed Rome so much I intend to return the next time Italy play wales.Your organisation was faultless and the hotel comfortable and close to the underground for site seeing.

Murray our tour guide was brilliant

Murray our tour guide was brilliant, he was always there to answer any questions, he loved his county, New Zealand and it showed. AS always Gullivers stepped up when sorting out the lost luggage. Any trip away I always use them. This was my 7th cricket tour with them.

Thank you for your review. That's great to hear you had a great tour and that we were able to help with any issues that arose with lost luggage. We look forward to hopefully seeing you again on a future tour!

Returned from weekend in Dublin for six nations Ireland Wales match with Gullivers. Fantastic, apart from the score. Weather was bad withstood Clara BUT Gullivers staff, particularly Emma, Kelly and Jordan were amazing. Cardiff flight diverted to Manchester and coached from there back to Cardiff. All Gullivers staff were great in arranging coaches with Jet2 airline staff, who were also amazing. Well done and thank you all for all you efforts.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear you found your hotel and tickets were not up to standards. We always strive to find the best quality for our clients and can only apologise that this did not happen on this occasion.

Great trip apart from the hotel.... and the delay!

Lots of help from your reps who're are really friendly. Started poorly though because of long delays in baggage reclaim. Despite the advertising placards boasting that Rome was a 'five star airport'. So we missed a Colosseum visit we'd booked, even though it was with a late time slot in case of delays. Then the hotel Palazzo Montemartini - also 5 Star - was poor. We did relay that to our rep. So a four star review rather than five star!

Thank you for the review. We're glad to hear you found our reps helpful and friendly. We apologise if the hotel was not up to expected standards and for the delay at baggage claim. We will pass on the feedback about the hotel.

Dutch GP 2022

We have just returned from an amazing weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix. The Hyatt Regency hotel in Amsterdam was lovely and felt more like a smart boutique hotel rather than a large chain hotel. The Gulliver's representatives (Adrian and Debbie) were professional, friendly and a pleasure to deal with. We felt for them having to deal with a change in itinerary due to extra long queues at Schipol Airport which was entirely out of their control. But, they managed to get us all to the airport in plenty of time with the minimum of fuss.....no mean feat! We will definitely recommend Gullivers to others and use them again ourselves.

Seamless booking for the trip to Milan…

Seamless booking for the trip to Milan for a lads and dad trip. Hotel superb, easy access to airport and metro, football match tickets with excellent seating arrangement. Customer service staff at Gullivers very knowledgable, patient with our many questions and very professional. Would 100% book through this company again and highly recommend them to arrange your football trip away.

Date of experience : 11 May 2023

Thank you for your review. We're pleased to hear you had a great trip to Milan and that the hotel and seats were excellent. Its also great to hear our staff were knowledgeable and professional. We look forward to hopefully seeing you on a future trip!

Regular Customer not looked after

We have been regular bookers with Gullivers for both Rugby and Cricket over a number of years. On the last Rugby trip to Wales we were given the smallest room I have ever experienced. It was the smallest double room in the hotel. We raised the issue with the on-site Gullivers reps who couldn’t do much as the hotel was full but they did leave some chocolates in the room. The point being as a regular returning customer we would have expected a better room. To make matters far worse we were then asked to fill in a post trip survey which we relayed our disappointment etc, and agreed to be contacted as part of the survey. Nobody ever contacted us! We have a trip to the Rugby World Cup final coming up and we are using that as a test to decide whether to ever book again

Date of experience : 25 February 2023

Thank you for your review. We apologise for the room not being up to expected standards. Hotels select rooms at check in on our behalf, we would usually try to find you a new room in these circumstances, but unfortunately as mentioned, the hotel was fully booked. We also apologise that we have not contacted you regarding your feedback, we have notified the relevant team. We will make sure to flag this with our Rugby World Cup team in preparation for your upcoming booking.

Cricket tour to the Caribean . Nov 2016

The admin was not great. Tour itself was disapointing. Accommodation in Barbedos was substandard. Only one match of the two was played. The local organiser was not aware that the ground was double booked until we informed him after prematch visit. The hastily arranged 2nd ground was water logged and unplayable. St Lucia accommodation was good. The local organiser was at hand all the time. Despite his efforts the match had to be cancelled. Poor ground preparation. We felt robbed that despite paying for three games only one was delivered.

Just bought tickets for Wimbledon. Only reason for four stars was I had to chase up whether payment was received and also advise on when tickets were arriving and by what format. Otherwise all good , thanks

Thank you for your review. We're glad to hear your experience was overall good, but we will make sure to pass on your feedback about the communication issues.

Very Poor Experience

Booked with Gullivers to attend 3 days at the Belgian Grand Prix. The Friday we had to leave the Hotel before breakfast was served as we had to make our own way to the Coach pick up point, we spent over six hours on the Coach in total, the Coach didn't have a working toilet, no food or drink, we had a maniac Coach driver who nearly caused two accidents with his speeding. After the Friday experience we decided to make our own way to and from the Grand Prix which was a much better experience. Gullivers had arranged a "meet and greet" for 7pm on the Friday evening, nobody got back to attend this as it was gone midnight before we got back to the hotel. Never booking another trip with Gullivers ever again!

Date of experience : 28 July 2023

Thank you for your review. We're sorry that you experienced a less than satisfactory experience with us, we take this very seriously. With regards to your concerns, we appreciate your comments about breakfast and apologise. We try to work with hotels to offer alternatives when possible. We contacted the coach company immediately about their driver, and he was taken off transfers the next day, which you were notified about. We also have spoken to the coach company about the lack of toilet facilities and can only apologise for this. We have been in contact with you to discuss your complaints already, thank you for agreeing a resolution with us privately. Again, we apologise for the experience you received, and your comments have been taken on board.

This was our first time at a Grand Prix and what an experience. The guide Ali was informative, helpful and made the trip enjoyable. The whole trip was very well organised and there were no hiccups, it was a very well oiled process. The hotel we stayed in was excellent and the food was awesome. Thanks Ali you made a dream trip really memorable for the right reasons. I hope when we book next year we get you as our guide.

Date of experience : 29 June 2023

Thank you for your review. That's great to hear you had an amazing experience and that the whole trip was well organised. We will also pass on the feedback to Ali. We hope to see you again on a future trip!

Excellent, from ease of booking to hassle free travel. Excellent support and very friendly staff both here and abroad. We will definitely use Gullivers again.

Thank you for your review. That's great to hear you had an excellent trip and staff were friendly. We hope to see you again on an upcoming trip.

Gullivers don't add value.

I could not see how Gullivers added any value to the trip. Indeed, at the moment the reps help was really needed with regard to transport issues he was unable to help, and we had to deal with the issue ourselves.

Date of experience : 21 September 2023

Thank you for your review. We apologise if our staff member was unable to help when needed, and will pass this feedback on to our Ops team.

Ryder Cup - Rome - 2023

This trip was arranged for my partner for his 60th birthday. After careful research (not being a golfer) I chose Gullivers because of their reputation. The level of organisation, information and detail for the trip was impressive, right down to a TEAMS call the day before travelling - with Lee - to cover off any last minute issues. The logistics worked brilliantly, all transport was bang on time, no issues with tickets, and there was on-site representation to cover off any queries. Obviously the event itself was amazing. In particular I must mention our rep the lovely Jade who was beyond amazing, nothing was too much trouble and she was all over the arrangements every day. It's always a little worrying to go to such a big event with lots of things that could go wrong, but this was as seamless as it gets. A thoroughly professional company and I'd definitely book again with Gullivers. Totally recommended.

Date of experience : 26 September 2023

Thank you for your review. That's great to hear you had an excellent trip with us, and we will pass the feedback on to our reps. We hope your partner had a wonderful birthday! We hope to see you again in the future.

Our Silverstone weekend will live long in the memory thanks to its superb organization by Gulliver’s. One small piece of feedback is that the hotel were caught unawares of our early departure and had to rush to put together a breakfast for us - which they did extremely well.

Date of experience : 08 July 2023

Thank you for your review. That's great to hear you had an amazing weekend at Silverstone. We will pass the feedback onto the team about the hotel breakfast. We hope to see you again on a future tour.

We went as a family to the Monaco Grand prix and Belgium Grand Prix using Gullivers. We will definately use them again, I dealt with Alistair who was brilliant, our hotel in Brussels was outstanding and the interconnecting rooms which I asked for, and got, were superb! Could not fault anything about them, friendly and helpful!

Grand Prix Racers

Inspired by the thrill of Formula 1 racing, Grand Prix Racers is Gulliver's Valley's largest rollercoaster and opened at the park in 2021.

The ride is the headline attraction in the park's Gears car themed area, and is a Race Coaster manufactured by SBF Visa Group: the first of its kind in the UK.

It features an F1 racing car themed train, seating up to twenty riders in five cars. After ascending the tyre driven lift hill, the train navigates through a circuit comprising a downward helix and airtime hill. Due to the shortness of the layout, the train makes two laps of the track before riders disembark.

It is nice to see Gulliver's selecting Grand Prix Racers to add to the theme park. An easier choice would have been a standard wacky worm, but this - even if it isn't the most comfortable rollercoaster in the world - is at least a more interesting addition.

It is a big thrill for children, and possibly one of the more intimidating rides at Gulliver's Valley. Grand Prix Racers is plenty of fun though and seems very popular, attracting a queue of eager families waiting to ride throughout the day.

gulliver's travel grand prix

Happy 350th birthday, Jonathan Swift. Widely recognised as the leading satirist in the history of the English language, Swift found his way into the world 350 years ago on November 30, 1667. Celebrations of his life and legacy have been underway across the globe – not only in his home city of Dublin but also Philadelphia , Münster , Yokosuka City , Dundee and beyond.

Gulliver’s Travels is Swift’s most famous work. Since it first appeared in 1726, it has captivated readers, authors and artists alike. But many people’s engagement with this astonishing book tends to get lost in fantastical images of scampish little people and baffled giants. So here is your cut-out-and-keep guide to all things Gulliver.

1. Not really a children’s book

Most readers will fondly remember Gulliver as a children’s book, but the unexpurgated version is full of brutality. The ruthlessly logical Houyhnhnms – highly intelligent horse-like creatures – plan to wipe out the bestial humanoid Yahoos by castrating them all. This plan is inadvertently inspired by Gulliver’s description of how horses are treated in England.

There is a particularly unsavoury scene in the Lilliput voyage where Gulliver urinates on the queen’s home to quench a devastating fire. This is routinely included in the children’s edition, albeit in sanitised form. And then there’s the scene in one of Gulliver’s final adventures where our hero has to fend off a highly libidinous female Yahoo who appears intent on raping him.

2. Coining new words

Gulliver’s Travels has given the English language a number of notable words, not least Houyhnhnm (move your lips like a horse when saying it). There’s also Yahoo, an uneducated ruffian; brobdingnagian, meaning huge, after the giants in the second voyage; and lilliputian, meaning small, after the miniature humans of the first voyage.

Swift also loved puns. Lindalino, a most unusual place, is another name for Dublin (double “lin”). The flying city of Laputa is a harsh allegory of England and its colonial dominion over Ireland – the name means “the whore” in Spanish (la puta). As for the kingdom of Tribnia, it is an anagram of Britain. Its residents call it Langden, an anagram of England.

3. Roman à clef

gulliver's travel grand prix

Like any successful satirist, Swift had many enemies. Britain’s first prime minister, Robert Walpole, is recreated as Flimnap, who as the pompous Lord High Treasurer of Lilliput has an equivalent role in their society. Either the Duke of Marlborough or Earl of Nottingham is the inspiration for his war-hungry governmental counterpart Skyresh Bolgolam, the Lord High Admiral of Lilliput.

Other authority figures are roundly mocked throughout the book. The pettiness of politicians – Whigs and Tories alike – is compellingly conveyed by rendering them small. That moment where Gulliver urinates on the palace is sometimes interpreted as a reference to the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, which ceded Gibraltar to the UK – and by which the Tories put out the fire of the War of Spanish Succession with some very ungentlemanly conduct.

4. Big in Japan

Konnonzaki in Japan, just south of Tokyo, is a tourist delight. In addition to stunning mountains and beautiful beaches, it is thought to be where Gulliver first set foot in Japan – represented as the port of Xamoschi.

Local tourist associations in neighbouring Yokosuka City hold a Gulliver-Kannonzaki Festival every November. American sailors from the Yokosuka Naval Base dress up as Gulliver and parade around the district. In the first Godzilla movie, the monster also lands at Kannonzaki, then heads toward Tokyo – just like Gulliver.

gulliver's travel grand prix

5. Gulliver goes Martian

The book jokingly mentions the presence of moons around Mars. After Phobos and Deimos were discovered by astronomers in 1872, Swift crater on Deimos was named in the Irishman’s honour.

6. Swifter things

Before the advent of film, Gulliver appeared in stage adaptations, musical rearrangements, visual caricatures – and on fans, pots and various other knick-knacks. Pioneering French illusionist Georges Méliès directed and starred in the first cinematic adaptation in 1902, the spectacular Le Voyage de Gulliver à Lilliput et Chez les Géants.

Yet it’s the live-action version from 1977 with its Disneyfied Lilliputians that tends to stick in our minds. That film features an ebullient Richard Harris as Gulliver, but many other actors have portrayed him – including Jack Black , Ted Danson and Vladimir Konstantinov . Gulliver even appeared in a 1968 Doctor Who serial ( The Mind Robber ) and in the first volume of Alan Moore’s comic The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (1999-2000).

7. Inspiring other writers

Writers expressly influenced by Gulliver’s Travels include HG Wells (most obviously in The Island of Dr Moreau and The First Men in the Moon) and George Orwell (Animal Farm). Margaret Atwood’s adventure romance Oryx and Crake takes a quotation from Swift for an epigraph. Atwood has also written an important essay on the mad scientists depicted in Gulliver’s third voyage.

In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, the main character, Guy Montag, alludes to the Big Endian-Little Endian controversy about the proper way to break a boiled egg (“It is computed that 11,000 persons have at several times suffered death rather than submit to break their eggs at the smaller end”).

8. Gulliver’s encores

gulliver's travel grand prix

Our notional hero’s life ends unhappily – by his own account – when he returns home to a wife and children he has come to loathe. Nevertheless, scores of secondary authors keep taking Gulliver on yet more journeys, typically beyond the world Swift created for him, but sometimes back to where it all began.

The earliest of these was the anonymously authored Memoirs of the Court of Lilliput , published less than a year after Gulliver took his first bow. More recently, a 1965 Japanese animated film (right) took an elderly Gulliver to the moon – along with a new crew comprising a boy, a crow, a dog and a talking toy soldier. New countries, new planets, new companions, new adventures: Gulliver has had a busy afterlife.

A collage of the Hard Rock Hotel, Diana Ross performing at Carbone, and an image of the JW Marriott Turnberry

In its third year, the outrageous glitz of the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix has only grown. For hardcore Formula fans, the sprint race run prior to the main event — a first for Miami and only one of six on this year’s F1 calendar — is a source of added excitement. But for those more interested in the revved up atmosphere than the standings of the Constructors Championship, Magic City is preparing for its best showing yet, on and off the track.

Here’s a look at the best new everything to see and do in the brightest and brashest town in America during race week, starting May 3.

Where to stay

Image of the JW Marriott Turnberry Cascata Pool

While big things are in the pipeline — an Aman, a Bulgari and a Rosewood to name a few — nothing new and worth recommending will be open by the time the lights turn green. If you were thinking of heading to your favorite 5-star inn on Miami Beach, be prepared to fork it over: it’s $2,150 for a night at the Setai , $2,563 a night at the W South Beach and don’t even try Faena — they’re out of rooms. But you didn’t want the commute up Collins Avenue anyway. Instead, target crash pads closer to the paddocks at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Aventura and Fort Lauderdale.

You can also book at the 685-room JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa , just 20 minutes from the track. It’s hosting an F1 pop-up, featuring a collection of race memorabilia, and some exclusive dining and spa options for race fans. It’ll set you back roughly $1,132 a night with a four-night minimum.

Where to eat

The Carbone Beach supper club exterior shows a marquis sign

Restaurants are shifting into top gear this week, so make your reservations yesterday. One of the flashiest dining experiences happening over the weekend will be Carbone Beach , a so-called “Supper Club on The Sand.” Over four nights, meals masterminded by Mario Carbone will be accompanied by surprise performances (in the years past Andrea Bocelli, Wyclef Jean and Nas have all shown up). You’ll also be in fast company; boldface names like Travis Kelce , David Beckham, LeBron James, Derek Jeter, James Cordon, Serena and Venus Williams have raised a glass here — not to mention billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Ken Griffin and Stephen Ross. It’s going down at a new waterfront venue at 22nd Street and Collins Avenue this year. Oh, did we mention that it’s $3,000 per ticket?

A painted image of the unopened Lafayette Steakhouse

You can also book a waterside table for brunch or dinner at Casadonna — a coastal Italian-inspired restaurant developed in partnership with Groot Hospitality and Tao Group Hospitality. Visualized by designer Ken Fulk, the restaurant is housed in the same Mediterranean revival building as Miami’s historic Women’s Club, within the city’s burgeoning Edgewater neighborhood. Better yet? Park your yacht for the venue’s Dock and Dine service. (Because it even F1 weekend in Miami if you’re not on a boat at some point?)

Short of that, let Michelin be your guide. New stars were just awarded, and while L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon remains the only 2-star spot in the city, three restaurants just received a star for the first time. They include: EntreNos , a contemporary hub by chefs Evan Burgess and Osmel Gonzalez in Miami Shores; Shingo , a Japanese restaurant by chef Shingo Akikuni in Coral Gables; and another Japanese nigiri favorite, Oga wa , by chef Masayuki Komatsu in the Little River area.

For something completely new, try Lafayette Steakhouse in Brickell. It’s soft opening during race week in the space formerly occupied by El Tucán (it’s now operated by Mr. Hospitality Miami, the group known for the sexy, theatrical dining rooms at Queen Miami Beach and Marion Miami). Lafayette promises prime cuts and the “glitz and glamor” “of a bygone era.”

Where to play

Image of a baseball cap from the Reserve and a woman drinking water from a bottle while taking a break from padel.

Off-track, the best place to find a F1 driver isn’t yachting Monaco or lounging at Amanpuri — it’s on the padel court. Lando Norris, George Russel, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz are just a few racers who are also active players. At last year’s race, the Williams Team took the opportunity to play at billionaire Wayne Boich’s Reverse Padel club at the Miami Seaplane Base. Now you can get in on the action at the brand new Reserve Miami Design District club. The club will be opening its courts for public bookings throughout F1 week. Score.

Where to buy

Image of a waterfront balcony at the Raleigh estate.

If you’re into cars and not into income taxes, you might consider settling down. The Miami curious should head to the sales office of the Raleigh , the city’s most anticipated real estate project. A complete overall of a 1940 Art Deco gem (formerly owned by Tommy Hilfiger) adds a new 17-story glass tower to the property. Designed by starchitect Peter Marino and developed by Michael Shvo, the tower has 40 residences serviced by that forthcoming Rosewood hotel. But it’s the penthouse that’s turning heads — and you’ll need a Max Verstappen-sized income to step inside. The roughly 13,000-square-foot, full-floor penthouse here is asking “over $150 million,” according to Shvo, who expects the project to be completed in 2026. If that’s a bit rich for you, three-bedroom residences start at $10 million. Oren and Tal Alexander’s Official brokerage will be handling sales.

Where to party

Image of the interior of the E11 club.

Singer Marc Anthony is crooning the National Anthem at the race, but that’s just the start. A-list performances are popping up everywhere. After a day at the track, head to Hard Rock Live , where Puerto Rican rapper Don Omar, and Ed Sheeren are performing. Meanwhile, DJ Kaskade is spinning at the Hard Rock’s Guitar Pool.

Poster of artist Black Coffee advertising his performance at LIV Miami

And of course no Magic City visit is complete without a VIP stop at LIV Miami at Fontainebleau Miami Beach . Formula 1 weekend guests can expect live performances from top DJs and renowned artists, including Black Coffee (May 2), John Summit (May 3), Bizarrap and DJ Khaled (May 4).

Downtown at E11even Miami , the “ultra-club” is expecting its second biggest weekend of the year (after Art Basel) — “this is when Europeans come and drop $50,000 on a table,” an insider tells us. On May 3, 50 Cent is kicking the late-night party, followed by Afrojack on May 5. The club is even offering a $111,000  “Winner’s Circle” package, which comes with four nights at the Gabriel Hotel, dinner for 11 guests at the Giselle rooftop restaurant and that $50,000 table. That’s one way to empty your tank.
