HAILEE STEINFELD IN CONCERT:

Academy Award-nominated actress-turned-pop sensation Hailee Steinfeld is a natural-born performer who effortlessly captivates both on screen and in concert. At her shows Steinfeld exudes major presence as she commands the stage and wows the crowd with empowering anthems like "Rock Bottom" and "Love Myself." Her upbeat songs promote acceptance and self-love, and ticket buyers are more than happy to  join in on the positive fun, singing along while they get down to the soaring synths and pulse-pounding beats. Steinfeld's star continued to rise in 2016 when she joined pop princess Meghan Trainor on The Untouchable Tour, and her powerful performances on the road left fans eager to see what she gets up to next.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Los Angeles-born Hailee Steinfeld began acting in short films as a child and got her big break at age 13 when she was chosen out of 15,000 girls for a role in the Coen Brothers' 2010 film True Grit. Her impressive performance was the talk of Hollywood, garnering glowing praise from critics like Roger Ebert and earning her an Oscar Nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Major roles followed in films like Ender's Game and Pitch Perfect 2, and in 2015 Steinfeld launched her music career with the single "Love Myself." The song was a worldwide hit, making it to the Top 40 on the Billboard 200, charting across Europe, and cracking the Top 20 in New Zealand. She followed up a few months later with her debut EP Haiz, a collection of catchy pop jams that reached the Top 40 in Canada. With several film roles and extensive touring keeping her busy in 2016, Steinfeld has fans crossing their fingers in hopes for a full-length debut album.

Hailee Steinfeld I would like to request that you return

Awesome Performance

Saw her during Charlie Puth’s Voicenotes Tour. The experience was better than expected and I hope she releases an album soon so I may see her in concert again.

Meet & Greet was deceptive

I was under the impression that we would at least get 1 or 2 minutes with Hailee for the Meet & Greet, but it was not even 5 seconds LITERALLY. At least a hi would have sufficed, but she didn't even say hi or look at me or other fans there. We basically paid to walk by the screen and have a photo taken by a crummy digital camera and the photos came out pretty bad and unflattering. For myself, I don't care so much, I just never been to a meet & greet and wanted to experience it, but wow that was a big mistake. I mostly feel bad for her other die-hard fans. They were really looking forward to it and spent all this money and time just to see her. In the photos though, Hailee was smiling as if she was having a good time with her fans. How fake is that?

Rising star!

Hailee has some room for improvement, this is mostly due to inexperience. I look forward to seeing her again in a few years when she knows what she's doing. Great with the crowd. I love that she last minute censored her lyrics because there were so many kids in the audience. She has real promise.

Hailee Steinfeld on Her Anderson .Paak Collaboration “Coast” and How She’s “Building Out a World” with New Music

"I'm so excited to share more where this came from," Steinfeld teases

Hailee Steinfeld on Her Anderson .Paak Collaboration “Coast” and How She’s “Building Out a World” with New Music

From the first notes of “Coast,” Hailee Steinfeld ‘s latest single, we are beachside, beer in hand, with waves crashing distantly ahead, the golden sun slowly inching toward the horizon. It could be Malibu, or it could be any other location that this feeling calls to mind. Though for Steinfeld, who was born and raised in Southern California, it almost certainly is Los Angeles, the song a conduit for the nostalgic, delightfully chill energy of the west coast.

It wasn’t enough for Steinfeld to take “Coast” solo; she brought along fellow SoCal extraordinaire Anderson .Paak to give the song yet another dopamine boost, and Paak, as always, delivers. But “Coast” definitely marks a new era for the singer, songwriter, and A-list actress. After her second EP,  Half Written Story , came out in May 2020 — her first release since her 2015 debut — Steinfeld knew it was time to change things up from the EP’s vulnerable, heart-on-her-sleeve approach.

“I didn’t want to live in that space anymore of feeling confused, sad, frustrated and, you know, maybe a little angry,” she tells Consequence . “I wanted to feel good, I did feel good. And I wanted to make music that felt good.”

In between releasing  Half Written Story in 2020 and “Coast” back in July, Steinfeld kept busy with her various TV and film projects — perhaps most notably her role in Disney+’s  Hawkeye series, where she plays the smart, athletic, and hilarious archer Kate Bishop. But in all the various cinematic worlds that Steinfeld finds herself in, she’s the most eager to explore her own. “Coast” is set to be the lead single for what Steinfeld calls a new “body of work,” a new collection of music that she constructed throughout the pandemic with esteemed producer Koz, known for his work on Dua Lipa’s  Future Nostalgia.

Though “Coast” was initially recorded in Steinfeld’s makeshift studio in her Los Angeles home, she took the song to EastWest Studios to re-record it, and ended up working in the same room that The Beach Boys recorded  Pet Sounds  in. “I would just sit there and think ‘what the hell was Brian Wilson saying to everybody in this moment, right now? What were they talking about? What were they fighting about?’,” says Steinfeld. The Beach Boys and their California jams certainly loom large in Steinfeld’s new project, and their signature idyllic energy is exactly what she’s looking to recreate.

Consequence recently sat down with Hailee Steinfeld to discuss “Coast,” writing and recording new music during the pandemic, her sonic inspirations, and what this new direction means for her music. Check out the full Q&A below.

Inside Hailee Steinfeld’s International (and Fashion-Filled) Bumblebee Promo Tour

By Janelle Okwodu

Image may contain Human Person Finger Female and Face

If you think you’ve got a busy schedule, take a look at Hailee Steinfeld’s. The 22-year old star hit the road this month to promoting her latest film, Bumblebee , and the international experience has been non-stop. Jet lag isn’t an option when you have to head to Berlin, Hong Kong, and New York for multiple premieres and press appearances (all in under two weeks). But like a seasoned actress, Steinfeld handled things like a pro—and with serious style, too. As both the film’s leading lady and the musician who performs its anthemic track, “Back to Life,” she needed a tour wardrobe that reflected her dual roles, so stylist duo Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn provided her with plenty of fabulous options. And we’ve got a closer look.

For the hectic tour, Zangardi and Haenn ensured each event Steinfeld attended had its own distinctive look; a sculptural Saint Laurent mini provided the right vibe on the red carpet in Beijing, while a flirty Elie Saab number worked for a trip to the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ’s stage. Even off-duty in track pants and combat boots, where Steinfeld was seen heading onto the next private jet, she still brought the fashion goods. But don’t take our word for it—in this exclusive behind-the- scenes diary, Steinfeld shares every moment of her global, fashion-filled journey.

Who Is Hailee Steinfeld?

Hollywood by birth, Hailee Steinfeld grew up in Los Angeles, California, where she began her acting career at age eight. She earned a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination for her breakout role as tough-as-nails teen Mattie Ross in 2010’s True Grit when she was just 14 years old. A string of movie roles, including the 2013 hits Begin Again and Enders Game , precluded her from joining the Pitch Perfect musical franchise in 2015. After singing a cappella in Pitch Perfect 2 , Steinfeld landed a record deal, released an EP, Haiz , and saw two of her singles (2015’s “Love Myself” and 2016’s “Starving”) go platinum. Steinfeld, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role as angsty teen Nadine Byrd in 2016’s The Edge of Seventeen , went on to star in the 2018 Transformers movie Bumblebee .

'True Grit'

Other movie roles, 'romeo and juliet,' 'ender's game'.

On the heels of True Grit ’s success, Steinfeld was chosen to be the face of Italian fashion brand Miu Miu and was cast in 2011 to play Juliet Capulet in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet . Being that she was only 14 at the time, there was controversy over onscreen nudity in the script, which director Carlo Carlei said had to be revised to become more age-appropriate for the actress.

The film wasn’t released until 2013, the same year she appeared as Violet in the romance-drama Begin Again and as Petra Arkanian in the sci-fi action film Ender's Game . In 2014, she continued to show off her acting chops in films such as 3 Days to Kill , The Homesman and The Keeping Room .

'Pitch Perfect' Sequels

Steinfeld joined the Pitch Perfect franchise as Emily Junk, in the musical comedy’s 2015 sequel, Pitch Perfect 2 , which opened with the biggest box office tally ever recorded for a musical. Starring alongside Anna Kendrick , Rebel Wilson , and Elizabeth Banks , Steinfeld sang in the film and ended up scoring a recording contract with Republic Records less than a week after the film’s release. (She also appeared in the 2017 follow-up, Pitch Perfect 3 .)

'The Edge of Seventeen,' 'Bumblebee'

Steinfeld, who made a cameo in Taylor Swift ’s 2015 “Bad Blood” music video, found herself on the awards once circuit again in 2016, earning a Golden Globe nomination for her role of angsty teen Nadine Byrd in the coming-of-age comedy The Edge of Seventeen . The actress followed with voice work for the animated hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and a starring role in the Transformers movie Bumblebee , which both hit theaters in late 2018.

Music Career

'love myself,' 'haiz'.

After signing with Republic Records, Steinfeld premiered her now-platinum debut single, "Love Myself" in August 2015, followed by an EP, Haiz , three months later. She went on to drop a series of standalone singles, including 2016’s “Rock Bottom” (with DNCE), ”Starving" (featuring Grey and Zedd) — which reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 2016 — as well as 2017’s “Most Girls” and "Let Me Go,” a track on which she collaborated with Alesso, Florida Georgia Line and Andrew Watt. She was also featured on Machine Gun Kelly’s “At My Best” in 2017 and appeared on the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack with her song “Capital Letters” in 2018.

Describing her anxieties with transitioning from film to music, she told Marie Claire in 2018, “As an actor, I’m masked by characters, protected by them. But as a musician, it’s my story, my voice, my face. It’s such a different kind of vulnerable.”

After opening for Katy Perry during the U.K. leg of her Witness: The Tour in June 2018, Steinfeld hit the road with Charlie Puth on his Voicenotes Tour . With a full-length album said to be on the way, she was featured on rapper Logic's song "Ordinary Day," from his 2018 album, YSIV , and a remix of Drax Project's "Woke Up Late," which was released as a single in early 2019.

Dating History

A self-described “very private person,” Steinfeld rarely discusses her romantic life. In the past she was linked to Justin Bieber and Puth but denied the rumors, saying she was just friends with both men.

After months of posting photos together on social media, she and Instagram star Cameron Smoller made their public debut as a couple, posing together on the red carpet for a pre-Golden Globes event in January 2017. (She was nominated that year for her role in The Edge of Seventeen .) They reportedly broke up that November.

Rumors that the actress/singer was dating former One Direction band member Niall Horan began in January 2018 after the duo attended a performance of Hamilton in London and continued to spend time together. By the end of the year it was confirmed that she and Horan — who once called her the “loveliest person on the planet” — had split.

In a February 2018 Marie Claire cover story, Steinfeld said of her dating life, “I’m trying to protect myself and have a bit of a guard up, but I also want to fall in love and know why love hurts.”

Early Life and Education

Born in Los Angeles, California, to parents Cheri, an interior designer, and fitness trainer Pete Steinfeld on December 11, 1996, she began acting when she was eight years old. Steinfeld has said she caught the acting bug from watching her cousin (Emmy winner True O’Brien) star in TV commercials, but her mom insisted she take acting lessons for a year before she was allowed to begin auditioning. After studying at Cynthia Bain’s Young Actor Studio, she landed her first agent when she was nine and began appearing in TV commercials, including a Kmart clothing ad.

Steinfeld attended Ascension Lutheran, Conejo Elementary and Colina Middle schools (all in Thousand Oaks, California) before beginning a home-schooling program. (She celebrated her high school graduation in June 2015.) Her mom has credited a fourth-grade teacher, who recommended Steinfeld for a gifted arts program, with helping the family see her potential as an actress.

During this time, she gained acting experience, starring in several student films directed by aspiring directors at colleges such as USC, UCLA and Chapman University, and had guest roles on the Fox sitcoms Back to You in 2007 and Sons of Tucson in 2010.

She has one older brother, race car driver Griffin Steinfeld, and is also the niece of fitness trainer Jake Steinfeld of “Body by Jake” fame.

Hailee Steinfeld

For the first time in a while, Hailee Steinfeld has some time on her hands.

“I’m just trying to keep busy, to stay sane, stay creative,” says the 23-year-old singer/actress, who’s been quarantining with her family in Los Angeles for the past several weeks. With her schedule freed up as the country remains on lockdown, Steinfeld has tried a few different ways to occupy herself: she ordered a bunch of recording equipment to create a makeshift home studio, for instance, which she had been meaning to do for a while. She tried to pick up painting, but only stuck with it for a few days. She’s learning to play the piano — or at least learning to master the fundamentals, “because that shit can get complicated very quickly,” Steinfeld asserts.

She’s also spent the weeks at home listening to music — full albums, specifically, absorbing recent LPs from The Weeknd and Tyler, The Creator, as well as family-favorite classics from the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. During a video chat with Billboard , Steinfeld proudly shows off the gray Stevie Nicks t-shirt she’s wearing.

“I… take it for granted, the ability to sit and listen to an album from start to finish,” says Steinfeld, who speaks with a mix of poise and excitement. “I think that that’s what artists hope for when they put an album out, that you take the time to sit and listen like that. … It’s so special. I don’t know. The last time I think I listened to an album start-to-finish [before quarantine] was, like, on an airplane. And I probably fell asleep.”

Trending on Billboard

Nearly five years removed from her debut single — which brought her to instant top 40 prominence — Steinfeld still has yet to release an album of her own; she loves the idea of making one, of committing herself to an extended project. Part of the reason it hasn’t happened yet, though, is because her professional life has been unrelenting by design for the past half-decade.

The Los Angeles native has been staunchly dedicated to balancing a singing career and acting career since 2015, interspersing leading roles across genres with disarming pop singles aimed at mainstream radio. The coronavirus pandemic has forced countless artists to take an unforeseen break from their busy schedules, but for Steinfeld, the shutdown feels particularly startling.

Her breakthrough performance in 2010’s True Grit netted Steinfeld an Academy Award nomination at the age of 14; at 18, she scored a hit on her first try with her debut single, “Love Myself.” Since then, Steinfeld has toggled between mediums, with new opportunities each year and few breaks in between them. “There’s no denying it’s a challenge,” she says of managing her schedule, punctuating the last word with a dry laugh.

Being positioned as a dual threat is nothing new in modern Hollywood, especially for young women; for instance, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon stars often try their hand at both singing and acting as they enter adulthood, with varying levels of crossover success. But whereas contemporaries have toed the line for a while before eventually committing to a general focus — music over acting for Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez, vice versa for Zendaya and Victoria Justice — Steinfeld has made the polymath life work for her, starring in both popcorn flicks and critically acclaimed film and TV projects, while collecting chart hits and squeezing in occasional tour dates. The list of artists who were nominated for acting Oscars in the 2010s, and have also scored multiple top 40 Hot 100 hits in that decade, includes two names: Lady Gaga, and Steinfeld.

“Sometimes you have actors who score a hit and then disappear from the music world,” says Phil Guerini, vp of music strategy at DCWW and GM of Radio Disney Network, which has consistently played Steinfeld’s singles. “There’s a difference between those who have a passion for music, and those who see it as another thing to accomplish to differentiate themselves. With Hailee, her music may have been preceded by her acting, but she has a work ethic and charisma like few others. You root for her.”

Steinfeld’s singles have been primarily composed of airy, anthemic synth-pop, and consistently garnered hundreds of millions of streams — her five biggest tracks to date have garnered a combined 1.79 billion on-demand streams in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Yet those singles have yet to coalesce into a solo project since her 2015 debut EP, Haiz.  That introduction is at long last receiving a follow-up this Friday (May 8) with another EP, Half Written Story , that is being billed as the first half of a two-part project. The five new songs are the most experimental, and personal, of Steinfeld’s career; they include interpolations of songbook classics, a heartbroken ballad, and a foray into pop-rap. None of the songs sound like surefire radio staples, but that seems to be the point of Half Written Story .

“It’s not about just top 40 hits, but about adding depth and [Hailee] expressing herself,” says manager Ed Millett. “We then are banking some ideas for her eventual debut album.”

For Steinfeld, the significance of Half Written Story has less to do with maintaining commercial momentum than trying on a few different sounds in order to establish one of her own. Her past five years’ worth of musical output consists of one-offs that were catchy enough to cross over and more thematically universal than personally revealing. Her two biggest hits following “Love Myself” were collaborations, and neither featured co-writing credits for Steinfeld.

Now, she is writing more, exploring more mature subject matter, and going through a self-described “trial-and-error process” in order to figure out what type of pop artist she wants to become. “I haven’t had that chance to really create what [my] sound is, consistently,” Steinfeld says. “I still think I’m very much in that process of finding what it is. And I feel like, with every song I do, I get closer and closer.”

Wendy Goldstein, president of west coast creative at Republic Records, remembers Steinfeld signing to the label when she was already a movie star, having been featured not only in the acclaimed True Grit but in Pitch Perfect , Begin Again and Ender’s Game by 2015. “She was 18, or just about to turn 18, and she wanted to sing,” Goldstein recalls. “And she had a lot of fans from the acting side, so it was really nice that she was able to engage them.”

It helped that debut single “Love Myself,” co-written by the then-rising duo of Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, was an unexpected barnburner, with winking lyrics about literal self-love and a crater-sized shout-along chorus. The song peaked at No. 30 on the Hot 100 and No. 15 on the Pop Songs tally; when the late 2015 release of the Haiz EP was followed by an even bigger hit, the 2016 Zedd-Grey collaboration “Starving” (No. 12 on the Hot 100), it appeared as if Steinfeld was about to become a mainstream force.

But then the acting world came calling again: Steinfeld spent the second half of 2016 promoting the coming-of-age dramedy The Edge of Seventeen , for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy, and the first half of 2017 filming the third installment of the Pitch Perfect franchise. The past few years have played out in similar fashion, with hit singles like “Let Me Go” — a stadium country-dance jam made with Florida Georgia Line, Alesso and Watt — and the empowerment anthem “Most Girls” squeezed in between starring roles in the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee and the Apple TV+ series Dickinson , on which Steinfeld plays a young Emily Dickinson.

Last fall, Steinfeld finalized a deal with TaP management, and says that she now feels like her team is working more lock-step with her vision of balancing film and music. “Especially at first, I think both sides of the team were very interested to see how this was going to be seamlessly pulled off,” Steinfeld says when asked if she’s experienced any jostling between the different factions of her inner circle. Now, “Everybody knows how important both of these careers are to me, and that I’m not gonna do one and not the other.”

For as fruitful as her acting career has proven, it has resulted in setbacks her musical growth. Steinfeld has yet to embark on a proper headlining tour, for instance, instead allotting blocks of time to open for artists like Katy Perry, Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor. Steinfeld also doesn’t have the volume of recording-studio reps that her years of experience would suggest, thanks to the months of filming she signs up for when taking on a new acting project. This has made committing to a full-length, as well as honing in on the stylistic direction of that project, a difficult task.

Goldstein says that Republic has tried to be as strategic as possible while working with Steinfeld’s schedule over the years, finding pockets of time for recording sessions and promotion. “She’s been great with blocking off weeks or months to focus on music,” says Goldstein. “And I try to be more prepared, to take care of us and avoid having a huge gap in the marketplace in between records — because in the streaming world, it’s about consistency.”

Yet Millett points out that, on a fundamental level, Steinfeld still needs to go through a deeper artistic process to unlock her full potential as a singer-songwriter. The road she’s taken, having spent the majority of her 23 years in the spotlight, is not an ordinary one. “Normally you start with an artist, going from a teenager to an adult, you’re working [with] writers and producers and defining who you are. That journey is not something that she’s done,” he notes. “Self-expression, gaining confidence to say how you really feel — that’s a scary process when you’re already a famous person.”

When Steinfeld is making a movie or a television show, she says, she’s still writing songs, although not as consistently as when she’s off set. And that’s okay with her — Steinfeld is learning not to overload herself, even as she wants to take on new challenges.

“I used to think that I could do it all,” she says, “and that it was all great and fine and it was like, ‘I can definitely record that and do this and this and this.’ And then I started losing sleep over it. I’m like, I am too young to be this stressed out.”

Although Steinfeld has propped up a home studio during the pandemic and is teaching herself to play piano, Half Written Story is not the product of quarantine. The five songs resulted from a burst of creativity amidst what Steinfeld describes as a particularly low personal period, after Steinfeld finished filming the first season of Dickinson in New York in spring 2019 and headed home to Los Angeles.

“These songs represent a time in my life where I think, for the first time, I was really just knocked off my feet in a not-so-great way,” says Steinfeld. Half Written Story was preceded by “Wrong Direction,” a mournful ballad in which Steinfeld expresses regret over her time with a partner who “burned me down,” while “Your Name Hurts” expands upon that feeling of betrayal.

Steinfeld declines to specify further about its subject, but “Wrong Direction” has provoked fan speculation over which of her exes she’s writing about since its January release. “We hear this all the time: There are people who come into our lives to teach us something, and sometimes there is someone who comes in that just completely derails you from your path,” she says.

Yet Half Written Story balances its heartache with moments of resilience. “Man Up” finds Steinfeld operating in a half-rapped cadence and lobbing insults at an ex (“All of these tantrums, they won’t win me back, love / Just be a man, love”), while “I Love You’s,” which updates Annie Lennox’s version of “No More I Love You’s,” is built around a dismissal of empty sentiment (“Now there’s no fear, no more running / I don’t want words that mean nothing”).

Steinfeld worked on the project with Koz, the Canadian producer-songwriter best known for his work with Dua Lipa, and says that the “constant riffing on sounds and ideas” resulted in slower tempos, different vocal approaches and a more adventurous sonic palette. [Neither of the songs released ahead of the EP have reached the Hot 100 chart, yet Steinfeld says that Half Written Story has given her a much-needed sense of release. And as her first project since 2015, it also updates her worldview.]

“This is her first statement as a girl who is now an adult, who has lived life a little bit,” Goldstein notes. “She’s really hunkered down in the studio, and has something to say.”

The second part of Half Written Story will be released later this year, although beyond that, Steinfeld doesn’t really know what the second half of her 2020 looks like. Production on the second season of Dickinson wrapped just before the pandemic brought the U.S. to a standstill, and all of her other acting and promotional plans have been put on hold, so Steinfeld will presumably have even more time to focus on songwriting, improving her piano skills and pinpointing a sound while stuck at home.

One thing she has appreciated about the lead-up to Half Written Story is the act of discussing her music, in interviews and elsewhere, after years of fielding questions about her acting career. “It’s one thing to talk about a character I play, and someone else’s writing, versus my own,” Steinfeld says. “As far as acting, I’m always going to be protected by the character that I’m playing — that’s like a safety net. And the more and more I talk about my recent music, I don’t feel that, because I don’t have that. It’s very me.”

Hailee Steinfeld Shares Her Tricks for Staying Fit and Healthy While On Tour

The singer/actress is no stranger to a demanding schedule, but she always makes time for a good sweat sesh—and self-care.

Like so many celebs, Hailee Steinfeld appears to be constantly chipper and glowing, despite a pretty grueling lifestyle. But as it turns out, traveling the world (hello Pitch Perfect franchise and world tour!), hitting up press events, and hanging with her (maybe) boyfriend *do* take a toll on the 21-year-old. "There are days when I'm low on energy because of my night's sleep or just everything catching up to me," Steinfeld said to Shape . When that happens, she says she tries to focus on everyone else who's part of her shows (including the audience) to muster motivation, she says. And when she's off stage, the singer-actress makes a point to take care of her mind and body to avoid feeling "meh" as much as possible (starting with intense pre-tour workouts with her dad/trainer).

We checked in with Steinfeld between stops on her tour to find out exactly how she stays on her A-game.

How She Stays Cool In the Summer Heat

" Mission's cooling towels are amazing," she says of the apparel and accessories brand that she recently partnered up with. "It's one of those things that you don't know how great they are until you try them. I came across them through dancing in rehearsals and now take them on the road with me-they're the first thing that me and my dancers go to when we get off stage. I also love swimming and staying in the water when it's hot out."

Her Workout Routine

"Touring is great because when I'm performing and sound-checking, I'm putting in more work than I realize. I'll still set aside extra time to work out, even if it's just 15 minutes of taking a walk or getting in a little bit of cardio after a day's work. If I'm in the gym I'll switch it up between the elliptical, bike, treadmill, or swimming. Even when I'm not busy, I always stick to my favorites: circuit training and kickboxing. Running isn't my favorite but I'll still do it."

"I always feel like spending time in the gym is a relief. I go in and put my headphones in and kind of just separate myself from everything for a while. It's kind of like a safe zone in a way. I definitely walk away feeling more relaxed."

Her On-the-Go Self-Care Practices

"I always feel like a candle does wonders. If you can take the scent of home on the road with you it's very comforting. That and a couple of pictures of family and friends. I also try to take time for myself, even if it's just a couple of hours. I will try my best to get a massage if I can. Or I'll take a walk in a park and relax and just shut down for a little bit. There's a part of me that enjoys the traveling aspect of touring and I always think 'I might never be in this city again, so I need to get out and explore,' but I make sure to use my free time to unwind too."

What She Eats On Tour

"I don't really stick to anything too specific. There are different options wherever I go depending on which U.S. city or part of the world I'm in. But I eat pretty simple and clean for the most part, and when I'm on tour it's really a matter of making sure to have small meals throughout the day to keep my energy up."

How She Deals with Haters

"It's easy to get knocked down by comments. People share all kinds of opinions on you or who you are or what you wear or what kind of music you make-whatever. It's not easy to take that. I try to focus on the fact that I work hard to feel good and look good for me. It's about living for yourself and doing things that make you feel happy."

Hailee Steinfeld On Touring With Meghan Trainor, ‘Edge Of Seventeen,’ And Her Constantly Evolving Style

“I’m making it happen”

Most of us, when watching a movie, have had the sensation of witnessing a star being born. In 2010, that's how I felt about Hailee Steinfeld when I first saw her in the Coen Brothers' Western flick True Grit . The then-13-year-old actress more than held her own alongside seasoned pros Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin, playing a young farm girl determined to avenge her father, a role that rightfully earned the newcomer a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Her star factor was only further solidified when I spotted her next in Begin Again as the rebellious daughter to Mark Ruffalo's deadbeat dad. When in 2015, it was announced that she would star in Pitch Perfect 2 , I have to admit I was more than a little perplexed by this choice. Despite the success of the first musical comedy installment, why would Steinfeld step away from playing more complex roles in favor of playing a happy-go-lucky college girl dying to join an a cappella club? Soon after she flawlessly belted out the lyrics to "Flashlight" in the film's final scene, the answer to came in the form of the launch of Steinfeld's music career: The now-19-year-old's debut EP, Haiz , dropped that November.

Her first single, “Love Myself," proved to be an effortlessly catchy self-empowerment anthem, with not-so-subtle innuendos alluding to masturbation . The second single off of the EP found her collaborating with Joe Jonas' band, DNCE, on an explosive electro-pop banger, “ Rock Bottom. " With sounds this infectious, it's no wonder that Steinfeld already scored a tour opening up for Meghan Trainor.

On the heels of her most recent single, a collaboration with Zedd titled “Starving," we caught up with multihyphenate at the Swarovski Crystaldust collection celebration in the midst of New York Fashion Week—a day after her performance at NYLON's very own Rebel Fashion Party and ahead of the Toronto Film Festival which sees the premiere of her new coming-of-age film, The Edge of Seventeen . Dazzling in a crystal-embellished jumpsuit and rocking the shimmery Crystaldust bangles, she gave us the scoop on her tour with Trainor, the meaning behind "Starving," and what it was like to work with Woody Harrelson .

hailee steinfeld world tour

How did you like performing at our party last night?

Oh, my god, that was so fun! It was so cool. I've never performed during New York Fashion Week, so it was like two different worlds of mine colliding—it was a great time.

And this morning, you are here, celebrating Swarovski's Crystaldust collection.

It's amazing to think that my affiliation with Swarovski goes back a couple of years. They worked on my film Romeo & Juliet —it was my second film I ever did—and I was 14 when I met the Swarovski team. They are one massive family, and to be a part of that, and to be here today, feels amazing. The Crystaldust bracelets look so gorgeous on display, and I'm very excited I get to wear them.

You are currently on tour with Meghan Trainor, what has that been like?

It's been amazing. It's really crazy, again, to be here on tour during New York Fashion Week because coming for New York Fashion is like enough craziness, but now it's like double the madness. The tour has been awesome, so it's very bittersweet that it's almost over.

Can you tell me how it came about? It happened kind of quickly. I met Meghan Trainor a little while back. We ran in the same circles, and we talked about collaborating and getting together and hanging out. And we kind of got to the point where we were like, "Okay, we need to stop talking about it and actually do it." And, she sent me a message like, "Hey, what are you doing this summer?" I was like, "I mean, it depends, I could be free." She asked me to go on the road with her, and I was like, "Absolutely," and it really has been the best summer, it has been amazing.

What is your latest song, “Starving," about?

“Starving" is a song about sort of knowing someone, or getting to know that certain someone, to [the point] where even though you were somebody before that person came along, they have given you this whole new outlook on yourself and on life. It's this idea that since you came into my life everything is different, and I didn't know that it could be this different since you came into my life.

You also have a new movie coming out that's going to show at the Toronto Film Festival, could you tell me about the movie and what drew you to it? I can't believe I'm going back to Toronto, that's one of my favorite festivals. So The Edge of Seventeen is an incredibly honest telling of growing up as a teenager, and being in high school and feeling like every little thing is the end of the world. So many things drew me to the project: they people that were involved obviously, the story itself, and sort of knowing that I'd be able to express so many feelings and things that I had gone through even though I wasn't in a brick and mortar school during high school.

A lot of people would come up to me and tell me how I would totally bypass all of the school drama and all of the this and the that, and I really didn't. I have experienced it and I still go through it, and I think everybody does regardless of where they are from or what they do or who they are. So being able to express so many things that I have gone through, like those experiences that were similar to her, was very liberating.

What was it like working with Woody Harrelson on the film? He's great and so much fun. I mean, he's a legend. He's so funny—he has got the best sense of humor—and he's so generous as an actor and is just a great person.

How do you find the balance between making music and acting? You know, it's—knock on wood somewhere—been pretty seamless so far. I really do believe that it's doable. It's obviously crazy and sometimes when the two conflict, it's hard to work things out. But I don't know, it's working, I'm making it happen.

What do you find is more challenging? Singing live for an audience or acting in a movie with a difficult or vulnerable part? I think there's a huge level of vulnerability within both. I do think, though, there is more pressure with a [part] that calls for a certain emotionally demanding [performance], and you have your director who is counting on you and the other actors that are relying on you. When I'm in it, it doesn't feel like that, but thinking about it, it feels like there is a lot of pressure to deliver in that circumstance as opposed to going out on stage and having fun and connecting with people and being yourself. It feels a little bit more light-hearted than like a dark set where people are, like, trying to be emotional.

Since you started performing on stage, I feel like your fashion has changed too—I loved what you wore at the VMAs and yesterday at the party. How would you describe your style today? I feel like it's just constantly evolving. I think that learning the music side of things and finding what I want to look like on stage and what I feel comfortable in and what I can move in. Then walking a carpet and feeling… I don't know, I'm learning so much about myself and what I feel good in. I think that it's evolving.

Since you got into the music industry, the public really embraced you. What has it been like getting this positive feedback, especially give how hard it's for some actors to go into music after films? It's been overwhelming. I mean, it's amazing how positive it's been. And I have so many incredible supporters. I have learned so much along the way from artists that I admire and I have been very influenced by in music for so long. Especially as an actor, it's been a huge part of my process. So, to be able to create music is really amazing, I feel very lucky.

No surprise here, but a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been in the works since the highly successful and unique superhero movie was released back in late 2018, when it was revealed the follow-up would continue to focus on the budding romance between Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). And while it has yet been revealed if any of the other versions of Spider-Man will return for a second tour of the friendly neighborhood in the animated feature from Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, Issa Rae has joined the sequel to take on the role of Jessica Drew , aka Spider-Woman. Likewise, the big baddie has yet to be revealed at this time, but there is speculation Dr. Jonathan Ohn , aka The Spot, will be giving the various Spider-Men (and Spider-Women) a tough time.

After months of planning and character designs, production on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 (working title) finally got underway in June 2020, when one of animators tweeted out that it was the “first day on the job.” Christopher Miller, of Lord Miller Productions, tweeted in July 2020 that the new visuals for the upcoming Spider-Verse sequel made the first movie “look quaint.”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is currently scheduled to open in theaters October 7, 2022 . The film will eventually find its way to Netflix following its theatrical and home releases, as part of the massive multi-year licensing deal the streamer made with Sony Pictures in April 2021.

Dickinson Season 3 (TV Series) - TBD (In Production)

Since its arrival in late 2019, the Apple TV+ original historical comedy Dickinson has been led by Hailee Steinfeld’s portrayal of the 19th Century poet Emily Dickinson. Told through the point of view of the budding writer, the series offers a feminist take on the era in which the reclusive writer lived, and shows the struggles she faced in order to find a place for herself both in society and the literary world.

After becoming one of the more popular shows on the Apple TV+, Dickinson was picked up for a second season (which premiered in January 2021), with a third season currently in production. During a February 2021 conversation with THR , showrunner Alena Smith revealed Dickinson Season 3 will be set during the Civil War and will explore how the conflict impacted the poet’s writing and her outlook on life. A release date has not yet been revealed.

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.

Hawkeye wrapped up its six-episode debut season on Wednesday, with a finale that featured big fights, even bigger revelations, and plenty of implications for the future of the Marvel universe.

For Hailee Steinfeld , who made her Marvel live-action debut in the series as Kate Bishop, aka Hawkeye ( not Lady Hawk), the season was a true roller-coaster ride, as her character went from idolizing Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton -- also aka Hawkeye -- to working alongside him to shake off the dangerous Tracksuit Mafia, their boss, and  a Black Widow, all while protecting some very important secret identities.

"There's a lot of depth here, and the stakes are incredibly high," Steinfeld told ET of the season in a recent phone interview.

When asked to name her favorite moment from Hawkeye's first season, Steinfeld narrowed it down to two that perfectly crystallized her first adventures in the MCU.

"The car chase in episode 3... with Jeremy and myself, we had the absolute time of our lives," the actress raved. "I had a moment where we shot the first take and I literally just was like, 'Yeah, this is absolutely why I did this. This is being part of the MCU.'"

"It was just so amazing, because this show is so beautifully balanced with these grounded characters and these very human emotional conversations, and of course, in the perfect MCU fashion, the car chases and the wild stunts and fight sequences," she added. "That was one of the first moments I had where I felt like, I had been in this very character-driven world, and then we were thrown in the middle of this car chase, and it was just the most epic thing."

Steinfeld's other favorite scene was a highly anticipated face-off that became instantly beloved by fans -- when Florence Pugh made her return as Yelena Belova, appearing in Kate's apartment to warn her off of trying to stop the Red Room-trained assassin from killing Clint. Or, as Steinfeld remembered it , "their little girls' night in over some mac and cheese and hot sauce."

"That was some of the most fun I've had working and Florence is incredible in that scene," she marveled. "That was really special, and fun to play through."

After her uneasy sit-down with Yelena , however, Kate received the news that shook up her world in the finale: proof that her mother, Eleanor ( Vera Farmiga ), had been working with one of the biggest big bads in Marvel history, Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, whom Vincent D'Onofrio returns to play after portraying the menacing mobster in Netflix's Daredevil series.

"I remember reading that and feeling very scared for Kate, but having this confidence that even though it's been a very short period of time, Kate has grown a lot," Steinfeld recalled of her reaction to the reveal. "And I felt like she, in this moment, is at least more capable now than maybe she was a few days prior, in terms of protecting herself. And she does still have an Avenger by her side to help protect her."

"But I think before jumping to any conclusions of feeling sorry for her, I was scared for her in that moment," she continued. "She's been doing anything and everything she can to protect her mom, and comes to find out she might be somebody that she needs to be protected against."

So, after her holiday heroics and a trial-by-fire look at Avenger life, does Steinfeld think Kate Bishop is ready for more superhero adventures in the future?

"She, I think, is forced into the reality of what it means to be a superhero. It's not all jumping from buildings and making people smile," the actress noted. "There's, as she says, collateral damage that that can go along with it."

"But that doesn't stop her," she added. "I think it throws her and it alters her outlook, but it doesn't stop this burning fire within her to ultimately help people and protect people. She knows she's capable of that. And I think that that alone can take us anywhere."

Hawkeye season 1 is streaming now on Disney+.

The year is 2011 — The Steelers won the Super Bowl. Billions tuned in for a Royal Wedding. The last episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show aired. And of course, the 83rd Academy Awards.

Amid the glitter and glamour of the red carpet, 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld donned a one-of-a-kind Marchesa teacup gown. The pale pink fabric was fastened with the most delicate of details. Although Hailee was already a Hollywood maestro, this is the moment she truly arrived — nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her breakout role in True Grit . Legend says she beat over 15,000 girls to play Mattie Ross, dressed in a homemade burlap outfit for her audition. There was no question that her performance, barely a teenager at the time, showed a state of remarkable emotional intelligence. However, this was more than a decade ago, and Hailee Steinfeld is formidable in this new world. But she holds herself with a certain type of soft power.

hailee steinfeld world tour

Since then, Hailee has crafted a catalog of work that continues to redefine her artistry. Some of her accolades include Ender’s Game , Pitch Perfect , The Edge of Seventeen , and Dickinson . You can see how she spends time with these characters, allowing them to become more complex and nuanced. She takes on their mannerisms — like a merger between herself and the other. In a world where we don’t always care to understand other points of view, Hailee brings empathy while straddling the dubious line between right and wrong. It’s no wonder she continues to be recognized for her fantastic work across film, television, and music.

This summer, Hailee swings into the spotlight as Gwen Stacy in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse . With her cool confidence, she is the only Spider-Woman (at least in her own dimension) and has no problem displaying her web-slinging expertise. This coming-of-age story brings parallels to both Hailee and Gwen: discovering their place in the world while staying true to who they are. We believe Hailee is soon to be one of the industry’s stealthiest superstars, simply by insisting on doing things her own way. She’s sticking to her script — and we believe that’s super.

Who has Hailee Steinfeld dated? Boyfriends List, Dating History

• Hailee Steinfeld was born in Tarzana, California in 1996. • Her cousin True O’Brien inspired her to become an actress. • She dated Instagram personality Cameron Smoller from 2016-2017. • She was also romantically linked to Justin Bieber and Douglas Booth. • From 2017-2018, she dated One Direction singer Niall Horan.

The popular American actress, singer and model still looks too young to have a stormy personal life, however, Hailee Steinfeld has already been noticed through some affairs which hit the headlines of tabloids all over the world. Let’s find out if her previous or current relationships have led to something serious.

Hailee Steinfeld was born on 11 December 1996, in the neighborhood of Los Angeles called Tarzana. She is the younger child of interior designer Cheri Damosin Steinfeld and personal fitness trainer Peter Steinfeld; her older brother’s name is Griffin. Even the first look at Hailee’s family will let one understand that it’s pure inspiration, and a bunch of success stories in all fields of the entertainment sphere.

Her paternal uncle is Jake Steinfeld, a fitness icon and the author of the fitness program and brand “Body by Jake”. Her cousin is actress True O’Brien, and it was her who inspired Hailee to become an actress too, as she was deeply impressed to see her cousin in a commercial on TV; Hailee was only eight years old then, but she firmly decided to join O’Brien on her successful acting path. Hailee’s great-uncle was a child actor named Larry Domasin, so a lot of critics saw an innate gift in Steinfeld, and she hasn’t turned out to be a disappointment.

Hailee debuted on TV when only 10 years old, in an episode of the series “Back to You”. She then appeared in several short films, including “Without Wings”, “Summer Camp” and “She’s a Fox”.

Her breakout happened after she landed the role of Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers’ movie “True Grit”, starring alongside Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Barry Pepper and Josh Brolin. Her performance gained very positive reviews from critics, so she went on landing more interesting roles, including Juliet Capulet in “Romeo and Juliet” (2013), Louise in “The Keeping Room” (2014) and Eliza in “10,000 Saints” (2015). However, her biggest success was her portrayal of Emily in “Pitch Perfect 2”, as it triggered her singing career.

In October 2016, the “Barely Lethal” actress was spotted with now-Instagram personality Cameron Smoller, when they attended the Just Jared Halloween party, holding hands and wearing matching black-and-white skull make-up.

They willingly posed for photographers, still holding hands as if emphasizing their being a couple. By the time the two started dating, Hailee had released several singles, and such music videos as “Love Myself”, “Stitches” (featuring Shawn Mendes) and “Rock Bottom” (featuring DNCE). She also finished filming “The Edge of Seventeen”, and was busy promoting the movie. As to Cameron, he struggled to find his career path, while settling things with Hailee. The fact of their relationship made Smoller quite popular, so he gained an impressive following on his social media profiles.

In January 2017 the couple attended a Golden Globes party together, but Hailee was still rumored to have flings with other personalities.

Allegedly there was something between her and Canadian singer Justin Bieber, and was also rumored to have chemistry with her on-screen match-up Douglas Booth, whom she co-starred with in “Romeo and Juliet”. Either these rumors caused troubles in Cameron and Hailee’s relationship, or their romance simply came to a logical end – it is hard to say. The fact is Hailee and Cameron called it quits in November 2017.

As of 2020, Cameron has around 40,000 followers on his Instagram account, and is dating Sonia Ammar, a fashion model, singer and actress, known for her modeling of Dolce & Gabbana, Nina Ricci, Miu Miu, and Chanel.

Hailee then met Niall Horan, one of the members of the super successful boy band One Direction, with the help of mutual friends in the music industry. They two were spotted together for the first time when they attended the live show of the Backstreet Boys in Las Vegas in November 2017, and were officially romantically linked. In December  Hailee took a photo of herself wearing a promo T-shirt of Niall’s world tour, and posted it on her Instagram account. The couple was then seen kissing and hugging at BBC Music’s Biggest Weekend, held in Swansea, Wales.

In April 2018 Niall took his girlfriend with him to attend the Masters golf tournament in Georgia, and a week later they left for the Bahamas to spend a vacation there.

All in all, the couple didn’t try to keep their relationship low-key, and they were later spotted enjoying their shopping trip in Los Angeles; Hailee and Niall simply couldn’t take their hands out of each other, hugging, holding hands and kissing right in the middle of the street.

During that period of time, Niall Horan, born 13 September 1993, was fully submerged into his upcoming solo tour “The Flicker World Tour”. Hailee’s career also took a major twist, as she landed the voice role of Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018).

However, in October 2018 Hailee refused to talk about her boyfriend during her interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, also stating that she didn’t want to use the word “love” too often.

‘When you fall in love, you pick up on the tiniest things about yourself. I am one to spread out on the mattress and take up every inch of space. Now I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to make as much room for you as possible’, referring to Niall Horan, yet not mentioning his name. Hailee, who hasn’t been the subject of any negative stories throughout her entire career, seemed to hide something by skipping details of her relationship with then-boyfriend. Was it the first bell for the couple to chill with each other?

Her new single “Used To This” hinted the opposite. The lyrics of the song praised the romantic moments of sharing breakfast and enjoying a lazy day in bed with someone special.

However, while talking to a Cosmopolitan reporter, Hailee mentioned that she was slightly afraid to discover what true love can bring into her life, as if she was still feeling the pain of her earlier high school heartbreak.

Nevertheless, on 13 December 2018 Entertainment Tonight reported that Niall and Hailee had separated – fans considered that they broke-up even earlier, as Niall didn’t congratulate Steinfeld on her birthday as he did the previous year on his Instagram account, writing warm words to Hailee: ‘Happy birthday to the loveliest person on the planet and one of my best friends’. Hailee was also spotted hanging out with Cameron Smoller, her ex-boyfriend, in November 2018, which also generated rumors of her break-up from Horan.

After the couple split, Niall was rumored to have an encounter with Amelia Wooley in April 2020. Amelia is a designer shoe buyer, raised in Birmingham, West Midlands, England. She is three years younger than her One Direction beau. According to Capital FM , they are still dating. MailOnline also reported that Niall was very serious about Amelia, and that ‘lockdown has definitely intensified his feelings for her’.

As to Hailee, she is reported to be single since her split from Horan, as she hasn’t been noticed with any other potential suiter.

— Hailee Steinfeld (@HaileeSteinfeld) November 17, 2020

It’s quite understandable, as she is determined to develop her acting and singing career, as she has recently finished filming as Emily Dickinson in the TV series “Dickinson”, and it is still not clear if the second season of the show is coming in the near future. She is also rumored to land the role of Kate Bishop in “Hawkeye”, starring Jeremy Renner.

In 2020 Hailee released a music video for her single “ Wrong Direction ”, and some of her fans think it was her own way to reflect on her relationship with Niall Horan. So those same fans are being kept waiting to discover who Hailee will be linked to next, hopefully happily and even perhaps permanently.

Loki star Wunmi Mosaku has also been added to the cast, which also includes Delroy Lindo, Jack O'Connell and Michael B Jordan.

Little is known about the production, with insiders (per The Hollywood Reporter ) claiming it will be set in Jim Crow-era South America and its narrative will include both supernatural elements and vampires.

There's also been some speculation that Jordan is playing a dual role as twin brothers.

Coogler wrote the script for the movie, which was subject to a fierce bidding war in January. His production company Proximity Media will be producing alongside Zinzi Coogle and Sev Ohanian.

It has a release date set for March 7, 2025 , though it's unclear whether this also applies to the UK and could be subject to change.

Steinfeld brought her fan-favourite Hawkeye character Kate Bishop back for The Marvels last year, starring alongside Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Samuel L Jackson and Zawe Ashton.

She is also due to reprise her voice role as Gwen Stacey in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse .

hailee steinfeld as kate bishop, hawkeye

Steinfeld's experience in Marvel may be evident in Coogler's new movie, with the actor previously talking to Digital Spy about how her previous roles inspire subsequent projects .

"I always feel like every experience I have ultimately, in one way or another, influences the future work that I do," she told us.

"I think that there are parts of each experience that I have that I take with me into everything that I do.

"I do feel, though, so grateful to have the opportunity to step back into this character (Gwen Stacy) because you get that feeling of picking up where you left off and fall back into this world and it's all right there."
