What is the Weather in Hawaii During October Like? 

Compared to traditional fall weather, October in Hawaii is still considered summer and has amazingly warm temperatures.

The norm for temperature in October is 83 degrees during the daytime and around the 70s during the night, with nights getting the lower 70s, which is a lot warmer than other places!

While it may rain a little more in October in Hawaii, the rain mostly comes around the night, and rain during the day is usually pretty short for the most part. You will also be happy to know that you can expect rays of sunshine for eight hours throughout the season!

Places like the Big Island will have less rain while places like Kauai will have more rain, but no matter where you decide to check out, you can still expect warm weather and lovely sunshine!

What to Wear in Hawaii in October

Amazingly, you can wear clothes as you normally would during to hottest months in Hawaii, because the weather is still warm and sunny during the “fall season.”

Wearing lightweight clothes like shorts and sandals should be fine, and a hat and sunglasses will help keep the sun out of your eyes.

Since it might be a little chilly at night, having a sweatshirt or a light sweater should help to keep you toasty. Generally, a pair of long pants should be enough to keep you warm.

What to Pack for Hawaii in October 

Packing should be the same as clothing as they are the same as they would be in any other season. I’ll start you off with my Oahu packing list and my Maui packing list . And if you want to make sure you aren’t forgetting some of the essentials on your trip, you can check out some of those things HERE .

However, having some long pants and a sweatshirt can be helpful to stave off the cold. A rash guard swimsuit will also help to keep you warm if swimming is something on your itinerary.

Also, remember some other essentials, like hats, sunscreen, sandals, and sunglasses, which will help you deal with the sun.

However, if you do visit Hawaii in October and happen to forget something, it’s as simple as heading to a local Target or Walmart and getting the things you need at a cheaper price.

Despite what some may believe, there are many great reasons to check out Hawaii in October. Because there are no major holidays during this time, the beaches are a lot less crowded. Since travel is down during this time, it is also known as one of the cheapest times to fly to Hawaii and stay there.

October also has a much more temperate climate. So rather than being scalded by the heat, you can still get Hawaii’s traditional sunshine and warmth without being burnt to a crisp.

I know that many people get seasonal depression when fall comes around and the weather gets much colder. So October can be a great time to stay a little closer to the warmth and recharge before you head back into the colder season!

There are tons of awesome things to do during October in Hawaii! Here are a couple of my personal favorites:

Pumpkin Patches 

Some of the coolest pumpkin patches can be visited all of October. These offer cool activities like mazes, the typical pumpkin picking, and hayrides. You might be able to check out some cool sunflower fields while there as well!

Aloun Farms 

If you want to get an educational experience during your vacation, Aloun Farms has a really awesome tour and pumpkin festival.

You can check out all of the fresh food they have, the live entertainment, and of course, check out their pumpkin patch!

You can find the farm at Kapolei, Oahu. If you want to take advantage of the tour, you will need to make reservations in advance. 

Waimanalo Fall Harvest Festival

Another cool Oahu pumpkin patch to check out with a beautiful sunflower field and several photo opportunities is the Waimanalo pumpkin patch .

There are also animals on the farm you can visit and you can explore the pumpkin patch during their 2022 festival along with the sunflower field.

Be sure to make your reservations in advance. And while you are there, be sure to snag a pumpkin to take with you!

Kula County Farms Pumpkin Patch

Found in Maui, the Kula pumpkin patch is a great place to check out if you want to see farm animals and pick some pumpkins while taking some Instagram-worthy pictures. 

There is also tons of fresh produce like pumpkin and strawberries, making this a fun thing to do in Maui in October.

Waikiki Costume Parade 

Every Halloween, if you head to Kalakaua Avenue, in Waikiki, you will stumble upon tons of people wearing costumes of all different kinds!

Here is a great place to do fun Halloween activities and see all the amazing costumes people have made!

Haunted Plantation 

If you want to really experience some of the Halloween fear, Hawaii’s Plantation Village in Waipahu is home to a really scary plantation that you might want to check out.

It’s ranked as the scariest place in Hawaii and one of the top 10 scariest places in America. You should only be checking this out if you have some serious fear tolerance.

This has been going on for 14 years and is made up of 60 actors who will literally chase you down!

Don’t come here if you are pregnant or have a heart condition. But if you want to live the Halloween vibe, this is the place to check out.

Hallowbaloo

Held in Honolulu’s Chinatown, the Hallowbaloo is a fantastic festival featuring art and music from all over the island. 

You can see some local and national artists showcasing their best work. And it wouldn’t be a Halloween festival without costumes being there too!

Hawaii Food and Wine Festival 

For a very festive October in Hawaii, be sure to check out the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival . This is held on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island!

With over 17 events scattered throughout the festival, there is bound to be something to satisfy every traveler.

Many tourists to Hawaii enjoy the combination of warm oceans and cooler daytime highs as summer turns to winter. One notable thing is that Hawaii’s waters are the warmest in September and October. This is because the previous hot summer months have affected the water temperatures.

Winter? In October? 

Hawaii is considered to have only two seasons : summer and winter. Summer runs from May to October, while winter is from October until May. Usually, October offers warm, pleasant weather that is slightly cooler than the sweltering days of summer. 

How much cooler? In Honolulu, the average October high temperature is around 84 degrees, and the average low is 75 degrees. Still, these are ideal temperatures for beach days and evening walks to the local restaurants and bars.

 On Kauai, one of the cooler islands, you can expect daily temperatures averaging around 76 degrees and lows around 60. This weather is quite different from Honolulu, showing how other islands offer slightly diverging climates. 

You’ll see these climate differences between the islands come up a lot when discussing Hawaiian weather. They can be important points to consider when planning your October trip. 

Nobody wants their vacation to be rained out. Luckily, you’re unlikely to encounter this in October in Hawaii. The rainiest months don’t begin until November; rainfall usually occurs at night, so it’s easy to work around it. There’s also the matter of climate difference between the regions. Some islands experience more rainfall than others, but you can usually find sun right around the corner. 

All this sounds great, but what are the actual numbers? Let’s have a look at the four major islands and get an idea of what the average rainfall is like there in October. 

Big Island: The Big Island of Hawaii is the driest island in October, averaging only 0.88 inches of rain for the month. 

Maui: Coming in as the second driest island in October is Maui, with 1.2 inches of rain for the month. To put this into perspective, Salt Lake City, Utah, a reasonably dry western city, averages 1.3 inches of rain in October. 

Oahu: The rainy season starts relatively early on Oahu, with average rainfall accumulating 2.33 inches for October. 

Kauai: Kauai may not be the best island to visit in October if you’re betting on a warm sunny vacation. The island averages 3.82 inches for the month of October, similar to what you could expect in Chicago, Illinois. 

Because the rainy season begins in November, you can lessen your chances of dealing with a lot of rain by traveling earlier in the month of October rather than later. If you do encounter some rainy periods, don’t worry. As mention ever earlier, rain in Hawaii usually doesn’t last all day, and it tends to be very localized.

What To Do on Rainy Hawaii October Day

What About Hurricanes? 

October is part of Hawaii’s hurricane season, which may give some travelers pause. However, before you back out of your plans, you must know a few things. First off, Hawaii doesn’t get many hurricanes that make landfall. 

Unlike places on the U.S. East Coast- namely Florida – where hurricane season produces frequent intense storms, Hawaii has only had four storms hit the Islands directly in the last 60 years. Best Time to Visit Hawaii – Seasons, Cost, Weather, & More

Rightly called the Paradise of the Pacific, Hawaii is overflowing with natural beauty. From the dramatic volcanic cliffs to soft sand beaches , every corner of the archipelago is worth checking out. But when should you book your Hawaii trip – what’s the best time to explore the Hawaiian Islands?

The short answer: The months of April, May, September, and October are the most enjoyable when it comes to temperature and overall weather.

That being said, the best time to visit can be highly subjective. Some travelers are happy to visit among the holiday crowd, while some prefer traveling around in solace. Also, if you have a limited budget, you’d want to visit Hawaii when the price of airfare and accommodations are the cheapest. The perfect time to travel to Hawaii also depends on which island you wish to visit , as each one is different with its own unique charm and attractions.

It can be overwhelming to plan your trip with so many factors vying for your attention. This is where we come in. In this post, we have compiled everything you need to know to plan your ideal trip to the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii Travel Seasons

Like any travel destination, Hawaii has two distinct seasons: low and high. “Low” season is when – as you can guess – the cost of the trip is at its lowest because the place is least busy or crowded. In Hawaii, low season stretches from mid-April to early June, and then again from September to mid-December.

“High” season usually refers to regular holiday periods when most people travel. Anyone in school or with a child in school can only manage to travel during summer or key holiday periods (like Christmas or 4 th of July). Since this makes up for the majority of the population, traveling to Hawaii during these times is EXPENSIVE.

The low season or off-season in Hawaii runs from mid-April to early June (late spring) and September to mid-December (fall) – honestly, we think it’s a paradox considering these are the absolute best times to be in Hawaii.

If you want to avoid the crowds, are looking to save money, or if you just want reliably great weather, this is the time to visit. Airfares and hotel rates tend to be substantially lower, and with a little bit of online legwork, you can find several good deals.

The only exception you should be aware of is the Golden Week which occurs in the last week of April and stretches through early May. Due to its close proximity to Japan, Hawaii is the go-to destination for Japanese tourists during this period when their four major holidays take place one after the other. If you’re planning to visit between the last week in April and early May, make sure to book your inter-island flights, hotels, and car rentals in advance.

High Season

It’s peak season in Hawaii from mid-December to March. Resorts are booked to capacity and prices are up, especially in the last two weeks of December and the first week of January. As spring break also falls during this period, Hawaii is jam-packed with families that descend on the archipelago to take advantage of the school holiday.

If you want to visit during the high season, make your flight, hotel, and rental car reservations at least three months in advance, if not more. Hundreds of thousands of people travel to Hawaii for popular holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the 4 th of July, so expect to pay top dollar and rub shoulders with the crowds.

We understand how tempting it can be to decide to cool off on a stunning tropical beach in Oahu or Maui, but keep in mind that a large number of families have the same idea each year. From June to August, the summer-time crowds are everywhere in Hawaii, so don’t expect to find serious bargains until spring and fall. This is vital to keep in mind during these high gas and high inflation times.

Summer months are also the warmest here, with temperatures climbing into the 90s. In addition to heat, it can also get pretty humid on some of the islands, like Oahu. For those who want to, say, go hiking through the legendary black lava fields of the Big Island , the peak of summer in June, July, or August might not be the best time to do so. 

The good thing about this weather though is that the surf is at its lowest. If you have small children or you want to learn how to swim or surf, the 80-degree water is really pleasant.

In terms of weather, spring and fall are the best times to enjoy the Aloha State.

Spring marks the beginning of the “dry” season in Hawaii and you couldn’t ask for nicer weather. This is also usually when airfare, hotels, Airbnbs, and other rental prices start to drop. Flowers are blooming, locals are celebrating the fantastic produce, and the annual week-long Merrie Monarch Festival adds to the good time with music, dance, and arts. While it rains every day somewhere in Hawaii at any time of the year, it seldom rains here in spring. 

The year-round temperature doesn’t vary much. The daytime temperatures in summer near the beach average between 84°F and 86°F, and the nighttime lows are typically about 10 degrees cooler.

Most water activities – swimming, surfing, diving – are better in the spring and fall seasons as the ocean is calmer and thus, safer. In the winter, currents are much stronger, waves are bigger, and storms make the weather even more unpredictable. If you are a water lover, March, April, and May (i.e, late spring) would be the perfect time to visit Hawaii. Fall (September, October, and November) is equally impressive for that fabulous weather, calm waters, and fewer crowds.

Best Time to Visit Hawaii on a Budget

The cheapest time to buy flight tickets and book accommodations and car rentals in Hawaii is during the low season when it’s much quieter.

As mentioned above, September through early December is the low of the off-peak season, and reduced demand leads to lower prices. The only exception is the Thanksgiving weekend since the military personnel based on the islands make travel arrangements with their family. 

If you can’t get away in the fall, don’t worry, the months of April and May also offer a great opportunity to travel cheaply to Hawaii. Just avoid the last week of April and the first week of May (because of the Golden Week). The rest of these two months are always abound with great deals on everything.

Flight ticket prices will vary, but they mostly depend on when you’re flying and where you’re flying from. Tickets from the West Coast are the cheapest at $350 – $475 per person, but we have seen even lower than that in the low season. East Coast to Hawaii tickets can be doubly expensive no matter when you fly, but you can still find some good discounts. 

Here are a few tips to save money on flights:

Fly during the week: Weekday flights are not as in-demand as the weekend ones; you can save even more by taking a red-eye flight.

Book at least a month in advance: We highly recommend buying your tickets 30-40 days before the date of your departure.

Be flexible: Some Hawaiian airports are way cheaper than others; consider flying to Lihue (Kauai), Kahului (Maui), and Honolulu (Oahu) to save some more bucks.

Accommodations

The cost of your accommodations in Hawaii will vary depending on what kind of property it is – budget or luxury. You can stay in a $40/night hostel or a $300+/night hotel. Hotel prices usually don’t go below $160-$180 per night even during the least crowded times, but if you’re willing to make some sacrifices (like a room without an ocean view), you can save considerably.

Before the 2021 rental car shortage, it was easy to find a mid-sized or economy car to rent for $40. Now, with more people traveling again – and since rental car companies sold off most of their fleets in 2020 – the prices have increased to $75/day and more including taxes. You can probably find a cheaper deal by looking around and comparing prices. We mainly use Turo when looking for budget options for car rentals.

Best Time to Avoid Big Crowds

April, May, September (the last two weeks) and November are the best times to avoid hundreds of thousands of tourists who come to Hawaii each year. Personally, we absolutely love late September and early October to explore the hidden gems as well as popular “touristy” spots in peace. With children back in school, you won’t find many families here this time of year.

The Most Popular Time to Visit Hawaii

Summer ( June, July, and August ) is the peak season that attracts the largest crowds, other than Christmas and New Year in winter of course. It is understandable, that when the weather is hot and muggy in most of the US, people seek relief at Hawaii’s beaches. Plus, schools are out so both vacationing families and locals are looking to the waters for some much-needed fun.

This is why summer is one of the priciest and busiest times to fly to Hawaii.

But hey, don’t take this to mean we are hating on the Hawaiian summers – not at all! Despite how crowded and expensive summer gets, the waters are at their calmest, making it perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

June and July are considered dry months so they don’t receive a lot of rainfall, which can be a blessing for some adventurers. This is also when waterfalls are at their weakest so you can take a ton of Instagram-worthy pictures.

The Worst Time to Visit Hawaii

You may have heard that there is no bad time to visit Hawaii . Well, about that…If you talk to a local they will tell you that Hawaii should be avoided during certain months. These include the wet season (heavy-rainfall months) and the busy season. And both of these seasons coincide in December.

December , in our opinion, can be a not-so-good time to visit the islands. From mid-December to New Year, Christmas-cheery visitors come to Hawaii from all across the world, resulting in higher rates for flights, accommodations, and rental cars.

December is also the wettest and coldest month of the year. We know, we know, Hawaiian winters are not really winters but when temperatures only reach the high 70s, you won’t find it as easy to go frolicking in the waters. 

Best Time for a Honeymoon, Babymoon, or Destination Wedding

Looking for a picture-perfect destination for a major milestone in your life? Be it the wedding of your dreams or your long-awaited honeymoon or babymoon , Hawaii has got you covered.

Although these paradise-like islands are beautiful all year round, we recommend choosing April or May for the least amount of problematic and unpredictable weather. You probably also want to avoid crowds, so choosing low seasons from mid-April to May or even mid-June, and September to mid-December will be a good idea. If you want a winter-ish wedding, November is ideal as it’s the least busy and least expensive during this time.

Best Time to See Wildlife

One of the most exciting parts of a getaway in Hawaii is seeing all of the stunning wildlife around the archipelago. Humpback whales, dolphins, tropical fish, and more can be found in the waters throughout the year. However, there are certain times of the year when you’re more likely to encounter these creatures:

Whale Watching

The humpback whale-watching season in Hawaii starts in December and lasts through March . Maui is the best place for spotting whales, but other islands also offer several opportunities during the season. Make sure to book a guided whale-watching tour so an experienced guide can take you to the best viewing areas.

May is typically the birthing season for monk seals in Hawaii, so this is when you’ll likely spot them. But please keep in mind that monk seals are a critically endangered species here and less than 1,500 are alive today. If you’re hoping to see them, Kauai would be where you’d have the highest chance. In case you see one, give them at least 25 feet of space.

Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles

May to September is the best time to spot sea turtles; this is when they come out of the sea and head to the beaches to lay their eggs. Again, when you see a turtle, keep your distance. We get it, they are super cute, but if you are caught touching, feeding, holding, or mishandling them in any way, you can face hefty fines plus jail time.

Best Time for Swimming and Snorkeling

The year-round water temperatures in Hawaii average about 77°F – 79°F, so you can swim comfortably any time you want. That being said, when it comes to swimming and snorkeling, the warmer the water, the better.

For that, the summer months – June, July, and August – are best to get the most out of those warm tropical waters. While winters are not that cold, the water can get chilly so many people choose to wear a wetsuit to safely enjoy their time in the ocean. Summer is better for snorkeling because of the smaller waves and calmer waters. If you’re really into snorkeling, we recommend Maui or the Big Island, as both see less rain and wind compared to the other islands.

Best Time for Surfing

If you are a skilled and advanced surfer, the best time to surf in Hawaii is the winter season, i.e., from mid-November to early February . Waves are bigger and stronger during this time, which explains why some of the biggest surfing competitions are held in Hawaii in winter.

As for the best spots to surf, look up the “7 Mile Miracle” on Oahu’s North Shore. It’s widely considered the mecca of surfing and welcomes thousands of pro surfers every year who seek to ride the most massive waves of their life.

The only active volcano in Hawaii right now is Kilauea, located mostly within the Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. You can visit it any time you want to see the lava flowing out of the volcano. If you’re visiting in winter or watching something like this from a higher elevation, make sure to bring a jacket as it can get chilly.

Best Time For Stargazing

The best time to gaze at the stars in Hawaii is between March and September when there is the least amount of rain and storms. If you’re visiting during this time, head over to Mauna Kea on the Big Island; it’s home to the largest astronomical observatory in the world and the best spot for stargazing. After living in Hawaii for five years (and now making multiple trips back per year), we learned a thing or two about planning the perfect vacation.

Planning a Trip to Hawaii: What to know before your trip

The short answer is: Yes, you can visit Maui in 2024 and the island is welcoming visitors.

After the devastating Lahaina fire in August of 2023, many people cancelled their trips. Travel to the area was discouraged as the community, government, and nonprofits worked to stabilize the area.

While Lahaina is a culturally significant area and was a vibrant community, travel to the town is closed for the foreseeable future as it’s being rebuilt. However, the remainder of Maui is open and welcoming visitors. The other areas of the island were not damaged by the fire in Lahaina.

2. What island should you visit?

The first and most important step in planning a trip to Hawaii is to pick the island or islands you want to visit. While the islands do share similarities, there are enough differences that it’s important to spend time deciding which island is right for you.

3. What’s the best time of year to visit Hawaii?

There is truly no bad time to visit Hawaii, but there are some factors that make certain times of the year more optimal than others. When we think of the best time to visit Hawaii (or the worst ) we like to break down when to visit based on the best weather, the best cost, and the fewest crowds.

In general, we think that the best time to visit any Hawaiian island is during the shoulder season: September/October and April/May. 

Here’s how we came to that decision:

Hawaii is located in the tropics, which means that you will have warm weather year-round. But there are definitely months of higher rainfall. And if you want to have the best chance of avoiding rain on your trip, you shouldn’t visit during those months.

The chart below breaks down the average rainfall by month for each island. Note, rain varies on different sides of each island — we are showing average rainfall for one popular visitor destination on each island.

A trip to Hawaii is expensive. And coming during a peak time, like between Christmas and New Year, can make your trip even more expensive. If you want your travel dollars to go further and get better deals on accommodations and flights, the best time to visit is during May, September, October, and November. Avoiding the crowds can mean the difference between getting on the boat tour that you’re excited about or staying on shore. Or finding parking at the beach that you want to visit.

Just like most vacation destinations, Hawaii has very clear busy periods and slower periods. The  Hawaii Tourism Authority does a great job of tracking visitor  arrivals to Hawaii and it’s clear that if you want to avoid crowds, February, April, May, September, and October are the months to visit.

That said, if you’re coming to Hawaii for something very specific, like whale watching, you’re going to be a little less flexible with your timing. Whale season runs from mid-December through mid-April, so showing up outside of those months would be a disappointment.

4. How long should your trip to Hawaii be?

Getting away for a vacation can be difficult, but you want to stay long enough to make it worth your while. Hawaii is not a quick trip, even from the west coast. Plan on a 5-hour plane ride and a few hour time difference. So heading to Hawaii for just a few days will make your trip feel rushed and exhausting.

We think that the minimum amount of time you should plan for a trip to Hawaii is one week. During that week you’ll be able to stay on one island and explore a few different areas. You can make the most of your time by using one of our step-by-step itineraries.

If you can, stay longer and see more. And if you plan to island hop , your trip needs to be much longer than one week.

5. Where should you stay? Hotel or vacation rental?

Once you know what island you’re visiting, it’s time to book your accommodations. The first big decision comes down to booking a hotel or a vacation rental.

Stay in a hotel if you’re looking for a resort experience: big pools, great service, and daily housekeeping. Book a vacation rental if you are traveling with a group, want more space, and would prefer to have a kitchen instead of eating out every meal.

6. Do you need a rental car?

To fully enjoy your vacation, you probably need to rent a car. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to rent it for the entire duration of your stay, especially if you’re staying in Waikiki.

If you’re planning a trip to Oahu and you’re staying in Waikiki, there may be days where your rental car is never used. There’s a lot to do within that 2-mile strip! You can save on expensive hotel parking fees by just renting a car on days that you want to explore the rest of the island. Rental car companies have offices in Waikiki which makes it convenient to pick up a car and take it out for the day.

There is also a car share company, Drive Hui, that is available in Waikiki.

On the other islands, it’s a bit trickier to go without a car. To see and explore, you’ll probably want to book one. We love using  Discount Hawaii Car Rental  to help us get the best price for a rental car on each island.

7. How much does a trip to Hawaii cost?

Let’s be blunt: a trip to Hawaii is never cheap. There are definitely ways to save money, but it’s still an expensive destination to visit.

To help you get an idea of how much you should plan on spending (or how much you’ll need to save up), we calculated the cost for a family of 4. But remember this is an initial estimate. Your trip cost will vary based on when you go, what island you visit, and how you want to spend or save your money.

8. How far in advance should you book your trip to Hawaii?

The travel tip we give over and over is: for the best vacation experience, book early. Don’t get disappointed with the lack of availability of rental cars, completely sold-out tours and luaus, and no restaurant reservation availability.

To avoid disappointment, book these things early:

Rental Cars

We recommend booking a rental car when you book a flight. That way you know you have something reserved for you and you won’t be stuck with a 2 door coupe for $500/day for your family of five.

Because it’s important to book your rental car early, we always use and recommend  Discount Hawaii Car Rental . They almost always have the best prices (seriously we’ve saved thousands with them), they book with national carriers, and you don’t have to pre-pay your reservation. So you’re welcome to check prices as often as possible and if you find that prices have dropped, you can cancel your reservation and just make a new one.

Right now we’re seeing some seriously low plane fares from the mainland to Hawaii so people are snatching up seats before looking at the rest of their trip. While plane tickets are cheap lodging is absolutely not. You may be able to find some deals here and there, but we recommend looking at (or even better, booking!) lodging when you book that flight.

Tours and activities

If there is a specific tour or activity that you know you want to do, consider booking it a few months in advance. Luaus and popular tours book up very early, especially during the busier months.

Entry tickets

There are a number of natural landmarks in Hawaii that require a ticketed entry. The state is trying to protect the natural resources and land by making sure that each spot doesn’t have too many visitors at one time. But with some advanced planning, you can secure your ticketed entry to some of these beautiful locations.

A few popular spots that require ticketed entry include:

• Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve: tickets may be reserved two days in advance of your visit.  Book a Hanauma Bay reservation here .
• Haleakala Sunrise Entry: bookings can be made 60 days in advance (with additional tickets being released two days prior to the date you want to visit).  Book sunrise reservations here . Also consider,  should you go to Haleakala for sunrise or sunset ?
• Haena State Park: Plan your visit to this park on the north shore of Kauai and  book tickets 30 days in advance .

Restaurants

If you are hoping to hit up the most popular restaurants in Hawaii, planning ahead is crucial. But how far in advance they accept reservations varies. For example, Mama’s Fish House on Maui accepts reservations 6 months in advance. But Merriman’s on Maui only accepts reservations 30 days in advance. 9. how many islands should you visit on your trip to hawaii.

You’re making a big trip to Hawaii and you want to see as much as possible, but do you have enough time to visit more than one island?  We recommend that if you’re taking a one week trip, you stick to one island . There is a lot to see on each island and you could stay as busy as you’d like to for more than a week, easily. If your trip is 10+ days, you could add on a second island to visit, but know that you will be moving around a bit more and you probably won’t get to see everything on each island that you were hoping to see.

While the islands in Hawaii are close together and just a quick 30-45 minute flight, your island hopping travel day will still cut into your vacation. Between packing up, the airport process, and checking into accommodations on your new island, this can easily take up half a day of your vacation.

Once you’ve landed in Hawaii, congratulations! Soak up that sunshine and start living that epic vacation life. Here are some important details to know now that you’re on island time.

10. Understand the geography  

Geography on the islands is important because it will affect the weather you experience and what you do while on vacation. One big thing to understand about geography is that each island has a windward and a leeward side.

The windward side of each island faces the tradewinds. Here you’ll get more rain and wind, but you’ll also get lush landscapes (thanks to all of that rain!). The leeward side of each island is more protected from the wind and rain and you will have drier, sunnier weather. Most of the famously beautiful beaches you plan on visiting are located on the leeward side of the island.

For example, on Maui, the leeward side of the island includes some great beaches, like Wailea Beach and Ka’anapali Beach. The windward side of the island is home to the Road to Hana and a lot of beautiful waterfalls.

When you understand the island’s geography, you can better prepare for what to expect. If you’re looking for a lush, jungle experience, with waterfalls and greenery head east to the windward side. If you’re looking to beat the rain and get some sun, the west or leeward side is your best bet.

11. Eat local

One of the treats about visiting a new place is the opportunity to try new, local foods that you might not eat back home. Eating local is one of nine ways to have an authentic Hawaiian experience .

There are a few things you should consider trying while you’re here:

• Fresh, locally caught fish:  If you’re a seafood fan, don’t miss out on the fresh fish. You can enjoy it at either a restaurant or from a fish market. You’ll see options like Mahi Mahi, Ono, Opah, Ahi, and more.
• Locally grown produce:  Enjoy dragon fruit, coconut, lilikoi, pineapples, locally produced honey and more. We love doing farm tours, but if that’s not part of your vacation itinerary, try a farm-to-table restaurant. You’ll get to sample some island flavors while supporting the agriculture industry here.
• Traditional Hawaiian food:  You don’t need to go to a luau to sample some traditional Hawaiian dishes. Look for dishes like poi (taro that has been pounded into a paste), laulau (meat wrapped and cooked in taro leaves), kalua pig (slow-roasted pork cooked in an underground oven), and poke (diced, raw fish that is wonderfully flavored).
• Shave ice:  Not shaved ice. You may think that this is like a snowcone, but it couldn’t be further from it. Soft fluffy ice shavings that are flavored with different syrups and creative flavor combinations. You might also have the add-on of fruit and ice cream. 12. See the can’t-miss sights

The beaches in Hawaii are incredible. But there’s a lot more to explore on each of the islands. And, some of these can’t-miss activities can only be done in Hawaii .

Some things you might want to add to your list include:

• Night snorkeling or diving with Manta Rays on the Big Island
• Seeing the sunrise or sunset from Haleakala Crater on Maui
• Watching the big wave surfers on the north shore of Oahu
• Viewing the stunning cliffs of the NaPali coast on Kauai
• Hanging out with humpback whales during their annual migration to Hawaii

13. Bring the right (reef-safe) sunscreen

Before you throw your favorite brand of sunscreen into your bag, stop. Hawaii has rules in place to help protect the reef and sea life that are so important. One of those rules is around the type of sunscreen you can use. Sunscreens containing chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate are no longer sold in Hawaii. These chemicals have been found to contribute to coral reef bleaching.

14. Snorkel to see amazing sea-life

Living here, we love spending our days in the ocean. There is nothing like diving into the warm, tropical waters and being greeted by colorful fish, turtles, octopi, and more. But if it’s your first time snorkeling in Hawaii, there are some essential details you should know.

Understand safety risks

Snorkeling may look easy, but water conditions, physical conditions, and more come into play. It’s not always as safe as it looks —  drowning is the number one cause of visitor death in Hawaii . Before you go out,  review the safety tips  to make sure you’re doing what you can to keep yourself safe.

Use good gear

Hear me out on this one. You’ll find a number of blogs telling you to pick up a cheap set of fins and a mask from an ABC store or Target once you arrive. There are a few reasons we don’t suggest that.

First, safety. Well fitting gear (fins that stay on and a mask that doesn’t leak) is important to keep you safe.

Second, it’s a significantly more enjoyable experience to snorkel in gear that fits well and is easy to use. This was apparent when we were trying to teach our preschooler to snorkel. The cheap gear didn’t cut it but once we got him in a good mask, he was off!

Third, buying cheap gear just adds to the already full landfill here.

That’s not to say you need to shell out and buy expensive gear. If you plan to snorkel many times, even after this trip to Hawaii, it’s worth it to buy good snorkeling gear. We have  sets listed on our recommendations page .

Otherwise, renting snorkeling gear is a great option. The shop staff can help you find gear that is the right fit for you. And if you find that it doesn’t work right, pop in and switch it out for a different rental set.

Go to the best places

All snorkeling spots are not created equal. Some spots on the island naturally have a more vibrant reef and are home to more fish and sea life. Other spots may be more affected by ocean swells at various times of the year.

Take a snorkeling tour

While we love snorkeling from the beach and we do it often, going on a snorkeling tour is a really special experience. On a good snorkeling tour, you’ll learn about the ocean, the sea life, and be taken to some cool spots that aren’t easily accessible from the beach. Plus, you’ll be able to see the islands from the water, giving you a different perspective and appreciation for their beauty.

• Molokini Sunrise Snorkel with Kai Kanani : beat the crowds to Molokini with this special sunrise snorkeling tour leaving directly from the beach in Makena/Wailea.
• Beach loading snorkeling trip from Ka’anapali : if you’re staying in Ka’anapali, you can’t get more convenient than this tour!
• Na Pali Coast Snorkeling with Holo Holo Charters : Cruise up the coast of Kaua’i and off the island of Niihau for a full day of snorkeling.
• Power Raft snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay with Captain Zodiac : Head to Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook monument for the best snorkeling on the island.

Understand the rules protecting sea life

When you’re snorkeling and enjoying the crystal clear water, it’s important to keep in mind that you want to make as little impact on the sea life as possible. Stay at least 10 feet away from turtles while snorkeling. You’re required to stay at least 50 feet away from Monk Seals. And if you see spinner dolphins, you’ll need to give them 50 yards of space.

15. Learn about the culture of the islands

Hawaii is a unique US state for many reasons but one thing that is important to understand is that Hawaii had a long and rich history before becoming part of the US. Learning a little about the culture and the history will enhance your stay and give you a new appreciation for these amazing islands.

There are plenty of ways to learn more about Hawai’i while you’re here. Consider visiting museums. On Oahu, we love visiting the Bishop Museum and Iolani Palace.

You can also visit heritage sites like Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park on the Big Island. You can  find a list of heritage sites to visit on the Hawaii Tourism Authority website .

This state park is a remote area on the Hana Coast. It has rugged coastline, beaches, hiking, lodging options, and camping facilities.

It is important to note, that the waves can be rather strong so if you are unfamiliar with these types of conditions, you may want to avoid swimming.

5. Wailea 

The coastal area of Wailea has become a must-visit for many Maui tourists. It has five beautiful beaches and a variety of different things to do.

Honolulu Hawaii Experience 7D/6N

I had a great time in Honolulu. The accommodation was good, rooms were basic but clean. The 4 day trips (mornings, latest return was 2.30pm) were really good, although some left pretty early which meant missing the included breakfast (good pancakes but no other options) 3 out of 6 days. Also worth noting that the Ocean Voyage tour at Kualoa Ranch (beautiful place and really good!) pick up was at 7.15am at a hotel 40mins walk away at the other end of town, then bus back wasn't til 1pm. Long day for a 45min boat ride so might be worth looking into other activities there too. Overall everything went according to plan and I had a great time, but as expected this would be a good bit cheaper to book everything yourself.

Honolulu Hawaii Experience 4D/3N

Bamba Travel was the only tour operator which responded and agreed to help me plan my tour in Hawaii. Although I would have liked a more thoroughly organised tour like pick up from the cruise terminal and transport to the Kualoa ranch organised, I had to take the public bus by myself. It was a bit daunting but Bamba gave me some instructions. At Hawaii it quite easy and safe to take public transport during the day. Bamba was helpful at every step. A bit slow with regards to correspondence bec of time differences as they are in the USA but they would respond daily. Thank you Bamba for helping me organise a tailored plan to meet most of my needs. I had a great time in Hawaii.

The tour had a few bumps. It would have been better if there were some included meals. There was no information about some of the excursions such as where the island tour stopped.

We loved the tour! The hotels/resorts overall were good. We didn’t always get the best view & some of the meals were not great. The Outrigger, in Honolulu, was very nice! Good food, nice room, but we did not have an ocean view. We found out from some of our tour guests, that we could have upgraded, to an ocean view. We were never informed of this! Pearl Harbor was great, however, I wish the tour included the Missouri. Both my husband & I could have spent more time there. Our best accommodation was at the Outrigger, on the Big Island, however the meals (including the Luau) left a lot to be desired. Our room was perfect, along with the pool. Convenient to eat offsite!!! The Volcano National Park tour was perfect!!! My favorite tour! We loved Maui, however our ocean view was ground level, & could not view the pool, or beach, because the cabanas blocked the view. Strange bathroom layout! We like a dressing/vanity area separate from the shower & commode. Food at the Sheraton was excellent!!!, along with other choice restaurants to choose from! Our tour directer, Lisa Beardsley was the best!!!..so kind, knowledgeable & fun to be with!!! She truly went above & beyond to cater to everyone’s needs! The arrangements, island hopping, check-ins, excursion meeting times…All over planning was excellent! Thank you Tour Radar & Globus for a memorable experience!
