Tour combines with R. Stones tour for this date and a billing dispute between the Stones and the Hermits result in a compromise where the Stones agree to take the stage long after the Caravan ends to create more of a separation in the minds of the audience. Peter Noone is a competitive sort and he has the Hermits do a long closing set that pushes the Stones up against Pennsylvania's curfew law, shortening their set.

In 1973 a British Invasion tour was promoted by Richard Nader. New York promoter Ron Delsener had the idea and contacted agent Danny Betesh about securing the talent. Betesh had handled a number of acts back in the day, including Freddie and the Dreamers who he still handled. Unfortunately Freddie had a summer season booked in Great Yarmouth so he was unavailable. Dave Clark turned down an offer but Peter Noone was interested and pretty soon a package was put together. It was at that point that Delsener had to bow out. He was dealing with the summer-long Shaeffer Music Festival in Central Park and had no time to devote to the tour. Oldies producer Richard Nader stepped into the breach and promoted the tour.
Peter Noone reunited with the Hermits for this tour. In addition to Herman’s Hermits, the tour included Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers & Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. Billed as “The British Are Coming Again” the 21-date nationwide tour of the U.S. and Canada began on the East Coast and worked its way to the West before working their way back to the Midwest.

In addition to the tour, Nader arranged a booking with TV producer Burt Sugarman to do a British themed Midnight Special. The filming took place on July 15th after the LA and San Francisco shows were cancelled and included all of the acts on the tour in addition to the Hollies and the Bee Gees. It aired on August 10, 1973.

The tour was apparently extended by an additional date in the Hamptons at an unidentified resort.
Billed as the “20th Anniversary of British Rock,” this tour featured Gerry Marsden, Billy J. Kramer, Herman’s Hermits, the Troggs, and Badfinger featuring Joey Molland. This version of Herman’s Hermits contained only Lek Leckenby and Barry Witwam of the original band along with Garth Elliott and Paul Farnell.

Peter Noone (vocals); Derek "Lek" Leckenby (lead guitar); Keith Hopwood (rhythm guitar); Karl Green (bass); Barry "Bean" Whitman (drums)
Noone who sold programs as a schoolboy at Manchester United Soccer matches, has studied at the Manchester School of Music and Drama and has appeared in the ITV soap "Coronation Street", before being offered a part in a film starring Judy Garland in 1961, an opportunity scotched, however, by his parent. Now in a group with Green and Hopwood. Noone meets Leckenby who is playing in the Wailers with Whitman in the Cavern, Manchester. They Team up as the Heartbeats, with Noone using the name Peter Novak, and playing at youth clubs, and teen dance hall, eventually signing with managers Harvey Lisberg and Charlie Silverman. The group's name is changed after Green notes a likeness between Noone and the character Sherman in the TV cartoon "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show". "Sherman" becomes "Herman" and the band's name develops to Herman & His Hermits, later shortened to Herman's Hermits.
1964 Lisberg and Silverman send producer Mickie Most a plane ticket and book him into Manchester's Midland Hotel, before taking him to see the group on stage in Bolton, Lancs. Most sees a facial likeness between Noone and a young John F. Kennedy and decides that the singer's "little -boy-lost" look would make him the ideal frontman for a pop act aimed as much at mums and dads as teenagers.
Jan- On its first US visit, the group makes a cameo appearance in the teen movie"When Boys Meet The Girls", starring Connie Francis and Harve Presnell.
June [6] The group appears on CBS-TV's "The Ed Sullivan Show" and also performs on the network's "It's What's Happening Baby" on the 28th
July [22] A Dick Clark package tour begins in the US, set to end on August 8th. (After a Bridgeport, CT gig, a local police chief states "I can assure any organization planning to sponsor entertainment of this type in the future that no permit will be issued by the police department", citing unruly behavior by teenagers.)
August [7] On holiday in Hawaii, Noone meets, and "interviews" for the New Musical Express, Elvis Presley, who is working on location for the film "Paradise, Hawaiian Style".
October [25] Herman hosts NBC-TV's "Hullabaloo".
November [3] The begins an 18-date, twice-nightly UK tour, with Bill Fury, Wayne Fontana, the Fortunes and others at the Gaumont Cinema, Wolverhampton, warks., set to climax on the 22nd at the Odeon Cinema, Manchester.
April [7] The Band begins a 12-date, twice-nightly UK tour, with Dave Berry, the MindBenders, David and Jonathan, and Pinkerton's Assorted Colours, at the ABC Cinema, Dover, Kent, ending on the 20th at the ABC Cinema, Edinburgh, Scotland.
June [25] The group guests on the last edition of ITV's "Thank Your Lucky Stars".
July [1] They begin another US tour, with the Animals, Jerry Lee Lewis and Lou Christie, in Honolulu, HI set to end on August 10th.
April [25] The group is featured in CBS-TV's Leonard Berstein-hosted "Inside Pop--The Revolution".
July [13] The band opens a North American tour with the Who, on their first US tour, as its support act, and the Blue Magoos in Calgary, ab, Canada, set to end September 9th in Honolulu.
September [24] The group guests on CBS-TV's "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour".
February [10] The band begins a ten-date, twice-nightly UK-tour, with Amen Corner, Dave Berry, the Paper Dolls, John Rowles and the Echoes, at the Town Hall, Birmingham, W. Midlands, ending on the 19th at Nottingham's Theatre Royal.
December [28] The group guests on BBC1-TV's "Val Doonican Show".

Living in Los Angeles, Noone forms the short-lived Tremblers in 1980, with Gregg Inhofer and Gee Conner on guitars, Mark Browne on bass and Robert Williams on drums, and records the album Twice Nightly. June [4] While both the Hermits, lining up as Leckenby, Whitman, Geoff Foote and Rod Gerrard, and Noone have continued to perform separately on the nostalgia circuit, Noone, now living in Montecito, CA, is still highly visible in the '90s as an ever-youthful VJ on the US cable TV channel VH-1 and as interviewer for the station's music magazine, "My Generation". Leckenby now dies of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Manchester, after playing his final gig with Herman's Hermits in Moses Lake, WA on May 29th.

Review: Herman's Hermits - On Tour (1965)

If you see a Sixties’ record by somebody called On Tour , keep in mind that (a) this is a US-only album by a UK artist, (b) this is not a concert album, (c) this is almost certainly a bastard release of odds and ends from the respective artist’s past, present, and even future (in that sometimes it hosts songs that would only later be released on the proper UK album). The Animals On Tour works exactly the same way, and later still, Magic Bus: The Who On Tour would also become one of the weirdest entries in The Who’s discographic history. Nevertheless, some of these LPs did have the advantages of hosting some songs that would only be released in the UK as singles, or not released at all — and they also gave US fans a much earlier opportunity to acquire a long-playing record by their idols than UK fans. Indeed, by the time Herman’s Hermits got their second US album, they were still waiting to get permission for a first one in their own homeland: and the UK edition of Herman’s Hermits , following this summer release in the fall, would essentially be On Tour with three tracks (all the singles!) replaced by three LP-only tracks from the US edition of Herman’s Hermits .
Let’s start off with the singles, because 90% of all our hopes that occasionally Herman’s Hermits might really be " into something good " rest on the singles anyway. ‘Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat’, written by the songwriting team of John Carter and Ken Lewis and put out in January ’65, is a jolly and upbeat pop anthem very much in the early Goffin/King style, the ideal kind of contribution for the level of Herman’s Hermits — and, understandably, one of the weaker cuts when it was borrowed several months later by Marianne Faithfull for her debut album. (Even then, I think that her seductive solo vocal, as compared to the Hermits’ multi-tracked singing, and the baroque harpsichord arrangement as compared to the fairly simplistic electric guitar on the original, at least try to make an improvement — not something that can be often said about the Hermits themselves when they cover other people’s songs). As usual, the only offensive thing about such a song is that it shot to #2 on the US charts... then again, let’s not advance the US charts too much credit.
The next single, ‘Silhouettes’, forces me to make a correction because that, indeed, is a rare case when the Hermits’ attempt at modernizing an oldie works pretty damn well — not that it tells us anything about the specific artistic genius of Herman’s Hermits, because essentially what we have here is a patterned conversion of a stereotypical Fifties’ doo-wop hit into an equally stereotypical mid-Sixties pop-rock song. Our input : a slow, horn-enhanced, catchy-romantic serenade delivered by The Rays in a polite, sentimental Fifties fashion. Our output: a slightly sped up, guitar-enhanced, catchy-romantic serenade delivered by Peter Noone in a joyful, youthful, exuberant Sixties fashion. It does not take much imagination to develop this thread further and realize how the same song would sound in the Seventies (bombastic production), the Eighties (synth-pop), the Nineties (Oasis-style boring crunchy guitars), and the 21st century (umm... Autotune?). But what the heck, at least the melody is memorable.
Skipping then right through ‘Mrs. Brown’ (which was already discussed earlier) and a completely useless version of Sam Cooke’s ‘Wonderful World’ (which somehow failed to make it onto any of the LPs), we now get to the age of big business with the one and only song that Herman’s Hermits are going to be remembered for: ‘I’m Henery The VIII, I Am’ (although on the US album it was boringly spelled ‘Henry’, that extra e is actually totally crucial for the song’s success). The original, hilariously inverting the trope of Henry VIII and his wives by turning it into a story of one widow and her eight husbands all named Henry, was a big vaudeville smash for Harry Champion in the early 1910s — and the «honor» of reviving it for the pop-rock age of the Sixties actually belongs not to Peter Noone, but to the early UK skiffle and rock’n’roll pioneer Joe Brown , who pretty much pre-shaped the song for the Hermits from top to bottom. For Brown, this was sort of a natural thing, though, since he was interested from the start in integrating the American rock’n’roll sound with the UK popular tradition out of pure love for both; Herman’s Hermits had a far more pragmatic role to play — as one of Britain’s most promising exports to the US, they had to consistently deliver that British quirkiness and eccentricity to a hungry US audience, deprived of organic entertainment by their colonial masters for almost 200 years...
...er, uhm, anyway, those rock’n’roll guitar licks you hear played at the beginning of the song, as if it’s gonna be an angry rhythm’n’blues number instead of a vaudeville joke — they’re actually copied from Joe Brown’s version, except they’re thicker and louder, and also there’s a relentlessly plowing bass bottom that almost overpowers the rhythm guitar, and then Peter Noone’s vocal is also louder, more aggressive and obnoxious than Brown’s quiet tone. Think of the transition as «modest rockabilly corrupts itself into brash pub-rock», and you might be getting somewhere. On top of that, Noone’s hyperbolic, braggardly exhibited Cockney accent on the song might be the most transparent representation of Britain’s lower classes to be presented to the American market by 1965 — ultimately, the song became sort of a cult favorite for both the UK and the US punk scene a decade later. And not just because of the vocals, but mostly because of how gleefully it revels in its own simplicity and stupidity. Yes, the arrangement may have been borrowed from Joe Brown, but nowhere in Joe Brown’s version do we find the classic " SECOND VERSE, SAME AS THE FIRST! " (even if Joe’s second verse is indeed the same as the first) that would, ten years later, be famously borrowed by the Ramones for their own ‘Judy Is A Punk’.
If only the typical Herman’s Hermits repertoire consisted of songs like ‘Henery’... but then if it did, they would have entered the musical annals as pioneers of «comedy rock» or «goof-off rock» or whatever, an early precursor to the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and the like, and this would not be quite right. In some strangely perverse manner, I now begin to think that the few songs like ‘Mrs. Brown’ and ‘Henery’ actually work better in the context of general pop music evolution when they are surrounded by boring and inadequate «serious» filler than if they were entirely and completely surrounded by goofy vaudeville and nothing but goofy vaudeville. It sort of goes like this: Herman’s Hermits are a bland, untalented band that fails every time it tries to take itself seriously, but succeeds almost every time it takes itself stupidly. But if it always took itself stupidly, who would even pay serious attention to them in the first place?..
So I’m not going to waste a lot of time bashing all those other songs on this album; most of them really just exist to provide context for ‘Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat’ and ‘Henery The VIII’. Those that are well-known in their more original versions are the quickest to be forgotten: Buddy Holly’s ‘Heartbeat’ (probably recorded for a «pairing» with ‘Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat’) and the Yardbirds’ ‘For Your Love’ only detract from the classic patterns without adding to them. The sentimental ballads (‘The End Of The World’, ‘I’ll Never Dance Again’) were not all that great to begin with, and Peter Noone is not the kind of guy to justify fluffy sentimentality. Only two songs represent semi-original songwriting, courtesy of the highly limited talent of the band’s rhythm guitarist Keith Hopwood: ‘Don’t Try To Hurt Me’ is a run-of-the-mill little rhythm’n’blues pastiche, somewhat in the style of very early Kinks (think ‘Nothing In The World Can Stop Me Worryin’ About That Girl’, etc.), and ‘Tell Me Baby’ is sort of like a watered-down imitation of the Dave Clark Five.
Finally, the good-night-to-y’all closing cover of Cliff Richard’s ‘Travellin’ Light’ throws Peter Noone onto the ring with Cliff in a fight for the «Champion Of The Smooth And Suave» title... and I think that Noone wins on points. More importantly, listening to the song got me thinking about how much the Monkees’ ‘I Can’t Get Her Off My Mind’ owes to it, and, consequently, about how there probably wouldn’t have been any Monkees without Herman’s Hermits to show them the way. Then again, why should we really dream about a world bereft of Herman’s Hermits or Monkees, in which they act as sometimes embarrassing, sometimes entertaining, and occasionally even enlightening court jesters to superior powers? It is only a world in which court jesters overthrow their superiors, like Malcolm of the Legend Of Kyrandia , that is ultimately doomed to extinction, and, fortunately for us, we are still living in 1965 here rather than 2025... ohmygosh, look at the time, actually, I’m outta here!

1965 NME Concert Dream Lineup: Beatles, Stones, Kinks + more

We all have our idea of what would constitute a dream concert, and if you were a British teen in 1965—or an adult in 2016 who happens to know where to find a good time machine—yours might go something like this: First, you’d book the Rolling Stones as one of your opening acts, performing some rhythm and blues favorites like Otis Redding’s “Pain in My Heart” and Solomon Burke’s “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” (beginning at the 34:40 mark, in the video below).
You’d also invite some of the currently happening bands like the Moody Blues (who begin the concert), the soulful Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and Herman’s Hermits (at the 21:10 mark).

For the second half of your fantasy concert, you’d get serious, bringing on the heavyweights: the Searchers , Them (featuring that dynamic singer Van Morrison, beginning at 51:40) and the Animals , (at the 1:00:05 mark), along with a couple of the best solo artists the U.K. has to offer: Dusty Springfield and the young folk singer from Scotland, Donovan .
And, of course, the Beatles , singing some of their recent hits like “I Feel Fine” and “Ticket to Ride” before closing out their five-song set with Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally.” And then you’d have the Kinks follow them, singing “You Really Got Me” (at the 1:29:45 mark).
If only, right?
Well, if you were at London’s Wembley Empire Pool on April 11, 1965, you wouldn’t have to dream; you could have witnessed that very concert, filled out with other current faves like Cilla Black, Freddie and the Dreamers (at the 9:20 mark), folk-rockers the Seekers (at 16:30), Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, Donovan, (at the 45:08 mark), and more.
Each year, beginning in 1953, the British music weekly NME (New Musical Express) polled its readers on the best of the year. The winners were then invited to perform for the people and, at the height of the British Invasion, that meant the Beatles, Stones, Animals, Kinks, etc.
You might think that a concert featuring so many future classic rock acts would last for a week, but in those days it was all about running on stage, playing a few hits and beating a hasty retreat. The entire show—presented here in black and white, of course—took about two hours from start to finish.
Our Classic Video also includes live performances of the Moody Blues’ “Go Now,” Herman’s Hermits’ “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter,” the Stones’ “The Last Time,” Donovan’s “Catch the Wind” and Them’s “Here Comes the Night.” Whew!

This is perhaps the best 60s live concert with an incredible line up. Music is all live and the sound is surprisingly good, actually great. I will be watching this almost as often as Katy Perry’s “Roar”

Wow! This really is a time machine! Great seeing all the hit-makers from 1965. Although the modern video gimmickery is a bit distracting, the sound is surprisingly good.

HERMAN’S HERMITS’ RECORD HOT FOR ’65 . . . APRIL 17, 1965
HERMAN’S HERMITS SET MARK ON HOT 100 CHART
NEW YORK — Herman’s Hermits, the hottest record-selling act today, have set a precedent by having their latest single release, “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter,” break into the Hot 100 chart at the No. 12 position this week. This is the highest jump of any record, thus far, that has ever hit the chart. The previous high was the Beatles’ release of their single “A Hard Day’s Night,” on Capitol Records, which vaulted at the No. 21 spot last year.
Herman’s Hermits currently have three singles ranked within the top 20 of the Hot 100 chart, with their “ Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat” at No. 6, “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter” at No. 12 and “S ilhouettes” “at No. 19 after only three weeks on the charts.
Just last month, WKNR , the number one top 40 radio station in Detroit, confirmed “Can’t You Heart My Heartbeat” as having been the most popular hit in record sales, through the station’s own influence with its listeners. “Heartbeat,” recently was the No. 1 song on WKNR for three consecutive weeks in the Motor City. The song hit the No. 13 position at the station on February 25 after debuting there ( at No. 28 ) the previous week. It jumped all the way to the No. 1 spot on WKNR the following week, beginning March 3 , and it stayed at the top there through March 24 , when it dropped down to the No. 4 spot on Keener 13.
But the latest tune, from the British band’s latest LP, has received what is considered the heaviest airplay of any record not released as a single to date.
Disk jockeys were playing the track from the group’s smash LP, “Introducing Herman’s Hermits,” which is currently at No. 3 this week on the Top LP’s chart in Billboard.
While “Silhouettes” was just released three weeks ago, MGM were forced to release “Mrs. Brown” due to popularity and demand and to date has found there has been no effect in the sale of the other two singles by the same group.
The advanced airplay on this tune has obviously helped the sales of this LP tremendously, since demand has forced consumers to buy the package to obtain “Mrs. Brown.”
The group is scheduled to arrive in this country Monday, April 19, for a month of one-nighters with the Dick Clark tour starting April 30. Prior to that Herman’s Hermits will make several personal appearances upon their arrival here. They are slated to appear on ABC-TV’s “Shindig” on May 4. END

1965 Caravan of Stars - Unit 2. The explosive success of Herman's Hermits in America coincided with their booking with the Caravan of Stars. This unit lacks some of the depth of other Caravans as the charts are heavily moving away from typical Dick Clark acts. This only emphasizes the singular popularity of the Hermits.

July 22, 1973 St. Louis, MO. The tour was apparently extended by an additional date in the Hamptons at an unidentified resort. Billed as the "20th Anniversary of British Rock," this tour featured Gerry Marsden, Billy J. Kramer, Herman's Hermits, the Troggs, and Badfinger featuring Joey Molland.
