If you plan to visit Ireland, you should check if you need a visa .

This page has information on how to apply for a short-stay visa. This is also called a ‘C’ visa and is usually valid for up to 90 days from the issue date of the visa. You apply for a C visa if you plan to come to Ireland:

• For tourism
• To visit family or friends
• To get married
• For medical treatment
• For short-term study

If you are not a citizen of the EU, EEA, Switzerland or UK and you do not need a visa to come to Ireland, you still need to have documents with you to show the reason for your visit. You must present yourself at immigration when you enter Ireland.

Having a visa does not guarantee that you will be allowed to enter Ireland .

You apply for a visa online. You complete a separate application for each person travelling, including children. After you have submitted the visa form, you have 30 days to send the supporting documents. It’s a good idea to prepare your documents before completing the form.

You pay a fee of €60 for each application. A multiple entry visa costs €100.

When you have submitted the form, you will get a summary of your application. This includes:

• Your visa application transaction number
• Your application summary sheet
• Details of the application office where you should send your documents

You send the signed summary sheet with your documents.

You must send documents in support of your application. This section has information on the main documents you need to send. You can get more information about documentation on the Irish Immigration Delivery website.

You must send original documents (not photocopies). If your documents are not in English, you must send a certified translation and the original document.

Birth, marriage and death certificates will be returned to you. If you want other pages returned to you, you should include a note with your application that says this. Send a photocopy (in addition to the original) of the page you want returned to you.

If your visa is approved, you must get travel insurance before you travel to Ireland.

Letter of application

You must write a letter that explains why you want to come to Ireland. You should give the details of your trip, including the dates you plan to be here, where you will stay and how you will pay for things while you are here.

You must say in your letter that you will:

• Obey the conditions of your visa in full
• Leave Ireland before your visa expires
• Not rely on public services or become a burden on the State

If you are visiting friends or family your letter should also have:

• Their names and addresses
• The names and addresses of any of your family who live in Ireland or another country in the EEA or Switzerland, even if you do not plan to visit them

Letter of invitation

If you are visiting someone in Ireland, you should send a letter of invitation written by them. The letter should have information about how they know you, the dates you are visiting them and why they are inviting you to Ireland.

They should include a colour copy of their passport or national identity card. If they are from outside the EEA, Switzerland and UK, they must include a copy of their Irish Resident Permit and the current immigration stamp in their passport.

The letter must also say that they understand you must:

You must include the details of where you will stay. You should include printouts of your booking confirmations. If you are staying with friends, family or colleagues, see ‘letter of invitation’ above.

You must send your current passport. It must be valid for at least 6 months after the date you plan to leave Ireland. You must also send a photocopy of each page of all of your previous passports.

Proof of finances

You must show that you have the money you need for your trip. If someone else is paying for your visit (for example a family member), you should send documents to show that they can afford to pay for you.

You don’t need to have a particular or set amount of money to qualify for a short-stay visa.

Passport photos

Include 2 passport photos. You must sign your name and put your visa application transaction number on the back of each photo.

Show that you must return home

You must show that you have strong ties to your home country and that you must return home. This could be family responsibilities, work, education or something else. You should send proof of these responsibilities. For example, if you are working you should send a letter from your employer and recent payslips.

If you sent your application to Dublin, you can check visa decisions and waiting times . If you sent your application somewhere else, you can contact the embassy or consulate you sent your documents to for updates on your application. Applications take around 8 weeks, but may take longer.

If your visa application is successful, the visa office will post your passport back to you with the visa attached. The visa will be valid for a particular period. Having a visa does not guarantee that you will be allowed to enter Ireland .

You will get a letter that says why your visa application was refused. You can appeal this decision within 2 months.

You are expected to leave the State on or before the date which has been stamped on your passport by the Immigration Officer when you entered.

You can only extend your visa if there is an unexpected change in your circumstances since you entered Ireland.

You cannot get an extension if:

• There is no change in circumstances from the time you entered Ireland
• There is no change in circumstances from the time you were granted a travel visa
• You are in Ireland to seek medical attention
• You are seeking a permission to marry in Ireland
• You are in Ireland to provide childcare facilities
• You wish to live in Ireland full time

Some people do not have to pay the visa fee .

A visa costs:

Single-journey visa : €60

Multiple-journey visa : €100

The fee for the application of visa differs according to the type of visa that a person is applying for and needs. Every type of Visa caters to a different need and has a different fee. For a single entry Visa to Ireland, a person needs to pay an amount of INR 4800 which does not include the service fee. Multiple-Entry Schengen Visa Made Easy For Indians Under 'Cascade' Regime

Good news for Indian travellers to Europe! The European Union (EU) has implemented a new rule that makes it easier to obtain a multiple-entry Schengen visa with a longer validity period.

The Schengen visa grants access to over 29 European countries, including Belgium, Bulgaria , Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The new visa ‘cascade’ regime starting April 18, 2024, creates favourable conditions for Schengen visas for Indians . Previously, obtaining a multi-entry visa with a longer validity was more challenging.

Under this new rule, Indians with a good travel history in Europe will be eligible for a multiple-entry Schengen visa. If you have used two Schengen visas within the past three years, you can qualify for a two-year, multiple-entry Schengen visa. This visa acts as a stepping stone to the five-year multiple-entry visa , which allows for greater travel flexibility within the Schengen Area (remember, visa limitations still apply).

Earlier, travellers who had used three Schengen visas in the past two years could only get the one-year multiple-entry Schengen Visa. Furthermore, the five-year visa was only granted to travellers who have held the multiple-entry visa for at least two years in the past three years. The EU has significantly relaxed the process for Indians, making these requirements more achievable for Indian travellers.

This new ‘ cascade ‘ regime applies to Indian citizens residing and applying for visas in India. However, the validity of your passport must be sufficient for the multiple-entry Schengen visa duration to be granted.

The new rule allows frequent Indian travellers visiting Europe to enjoy similar visa benefits as travellers from certain countries who don’t require visas. Now you can plan your European adventures with greater ease.

EU relaxes Schengen visa norms for Indian nationals; here's what you need to know

I n a promising development for Indian citizens, the European Union (EU) announced on Monday that individuals from India can now seek a multiple-entry visa with extended validity.

The European Commission stated in a release that the regulations, endorsed on April 18, present a more advantageous framework than the previous standard provisions of the visa code.

Under the newly instituted visa 'cascade' arrangement for India, individuals can obtain long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after successfully obtaining and utilizing two visas within the preceding three years.

"The initial two-year visa is typically succeeded by a five-year visa, contingent upon the remaining validity of the passport. Throughout the duration of these visas, holders enjoy travel privileges equivalent to visa-exempt nationals," the statement explained.

EU's statement further pointed out that this decision of theirs aligns with the deepening ties outlined in the EU-India Common Agenda on migration and mobility, which aims for comprehensive collaboration on migration policy between the EU and India.

Taking to X, EU ambassador, Herve Delphin said, "Unlocking Easier Access to Europe! EU Diplomat Hervé Delphin Champions New Schengen Visa Regime, Extending to Indian Frequent Travelers for Up to 5 Years. Strengthening People-to-People Ties!"

Under the Schengen visa, holders are permitted to freely explore the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

While these visas are not restricted by purpose, it's important to note that they do not confer the right to work.

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 EU member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, it encompasses Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

All foreign nationals entering India are required to possess a valid international travel document in the form of a national passport with a valid visa from an Indian Mission/Post or eVisa (Limited Categories) from Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs.

Visa on Arrival for the nationals of Japan, South Korea and UAE (only for such UAE nationals who had earlier obtained e-Visa or regular/paper visa for India) Available at selected Airports

Advisory: Government of India has not authorized any agent or intermediary to charge any fee for facilitation of emergency / express Visa/eVisa. EU eases norm to offer Indians multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity

In a major reprieve for Indian travellers seeking to visit Europe during the upcoming holiday season, the European Union will now offer multiple entry Schengen visas with longer validity. As EU eases the visa norms, frequent Indian travellers will now be able to apply for five-year multiple entry visas, which puts them at par with “visa-free nationals”.

As per a statement issued by the European Union on Monday to this effect, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and used two visas in the past three years. “The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining,” the readout said.

European Union’s ambassador to India Herve Delphin described the new visa regime as another step towards enhancing people-to-people contact between the two sides. “Travel to Europe made easy,” Delphin remarked.

“On April 18, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the visa code that applied to date,” said the EU statement.

“According to the newly adopted visa ‘cascade’ regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years,” it said.

“The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals,” it said.

The changes in the visa norms came in the context of “strengthened”relations under the EU-India common agenda on migration and mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the two sides, it added.

During the holiday season, Indian travellers typically face inordinate delays in securing visa appointments to countries under the Schengen region, sometimes lasting up to two to three months. This became particularly worse during the pandemic, when the visa appointment times extended up to several months.

Even as Schengen visas — along with the US visas — are the most sought-after among Indian travellers, while the US offers a 10-year visa to Indians seeking B1/B2 category (visit and tourism visas), the Schengen countries typically offer travel date-specific visas.

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work.

Payment Method:

• Fee is payable by two separate crossed postal order/bank drafts in Euro, drawn in favour of Embassy of India, Dublin as per visa fee structure.

For Applications submitted in person at the counter of Embassy:

Fee can now be accepted via any major Debit Card( Visa, Master Card, Maestro, JCB, Union Pay etc.) at POS Terminal at the Embassy counter.

For Applications submitted through post:

• Fee can now be paid via bank transfer to the Embassy's Account as per the details mentioned below. Applicants are requested to check the website and confirm the exact fees to be paid before making the payment. In case of any doubt, applicants may first contact Consular Section to confirm the exact amount of fees before paying the fees through bank transfer. Fee including the consular fee and ICWF component is to be transferred in a single transaction. For Eg., Fee for Tourist Visa for Irish Passport holders will be Euro 87 which should be transferred online in a single transaction.
• Applicant is requested to also submit the proof of fee payment along with the application. The application will be processed only after receipt of the fee in the Embassy’s bank account. While making Bank Transfer, the applicant will mention his/her name, email/mobile no and Passport No., Name of Consular Service requested and File No. of Application form, if available (if remarks column in their bank allow).
