  • A full day of touring today begins at the center of Catholicism – Vatican City .
  • We arrive at the Piazza San Pietro , and enter the Basilica of St. Peter , the symbol of Christianity and the largest church in the world covering 22,000 square meters, equivalent to 5-1/2 acres of land. Michelangelo’s dome is 137 ft, wide, and the entire building rises to a height of 446 ft. Countless masterpieces are housed here, including Bernini’s bronze Baldacchino and Michelangelo’s Pietà . The Vatican Museum offers innumerable paintings, highlighted by one of the cornerstones of Italian art, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel .
  • From Vatican City , we enjoy a short walk to Castel Sant'Angelo , one of the town's most famous landmarks. Originally built as a mausoleum, Castel Sant'Angelo was transformed into an fortress in the Middle Ages that defended the northern entrance of the city. The popes commissioned the construction of a fortified corridor connected to the Vatican Palaces, to be used as an escape route. The castle guarded the riches of the Popes, and was used to store enormous reserves of food in the event of an attack, housing water tanks, granaries and even a mill. Castel Sant' Angelo was notorious as the scene of executions by decapitation, where the heads of the condemned were hung for days along the bridge as a warning.
  • From here, we cross the Tiber , and arrive at Piazza Navona , built on top of the remains of Domitian’s Stadium . Here we see three famous fountains, the most important of which is Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers (the Nile, Ganges, Danube and Rio de la Plata).
  • The Stadium, built before 86 A.D., was the favorite spot to hold games, tournaments and processions, and etween the seventeenth and nineteen centuries, the piazza was often flooded for aquatic games and to stage naval battles.
  • Continue to the Pantheon , the finest example of architecture of ancient Rome. Here lies the tombs of renaissance painter and architect Raphael , baroque painter Annibale Carracci and kings Vittorio Emanuele II. and Umberto I.
  • Today’s tour ends at the Piazza di Spagna , renowned for Bernini’s fountain and the celebrated Spanish Steps.
  • Creating a refined, eighteenth century atmosphere, it is no coincidence that high-fashion brands, such as Gucci, Bulgari and Valentino, all have show-piece shops just off the piazza.
  • Home to English poets Keats and Shelley , the world-famous piazza, located at the foot of the Pincio Hill , has always been considered both a priceless cultural gem as well as popular tourist attraction.
  • Come back to our Rome hotel.
  • Today's touring begins at the Roman Colosseum , one of the most imposing of ancient structures completely covered intravertine stone slabs. The amphitheater could hold up to seventy thousand spectators and the seats were inclined in such a way as to enable a perfect view from wherever one sat.
  • Entry was free for all Roman citizens, but places were divided according to social status. Like modern sports stadiums, the Colosseum gave spectators efficient protection from the sun thanks to its ingenious roof covering, an enormous linen tarpaulin hung by a system of ropes and wooden poles that took one hundred sailors from the Imperial fleet to move it in perfect synchrony to the beating of a drum.
  • Today, we see the skeleton of what was the greatest arena in the ancient world. Three-fifths of the outer surrounding brick walls are missing, used in the Middle Ages, as an enormous quarry to build Barberini Palace , Piazza Venezia and even St. Peter's .
  • On entering, we see the arena straight ahead of us. The stage floor has now disappeared and in its place you can see the cellars. Two underground floors housed the lifts and hoists with counter weights, creating special effects used to hoist up animals and gladiators who burst into the arena through trapdoors in a burst of white dust, giving the audience great surprise effects.
  • After the VI. century, with the Empire's decline, the Colosseum fell into disusre, and housed jails, hospitals, hermits and even a cemetery. Threatened with demolition by Sixtus V. , it was declared a sacred monument dedicated to the Passion of Christ by Benedict XIV.
  • Since then, it has become an object of worship and was protected from further destruction and ruin.
  • Situated between Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum , we arrive at the Roman Forum , one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
  • Three thousand years ago, this valley between Campidoglio and the Quirinal was submerged in marshland. By an incredible invention of engineering, a canal that is still in function to this very day allowed for the drainage of the land. The area soon began to develop and by the end of the 7th century BC, it was the heart and soul of city life.
  • It was in Caesar's time, when Rome had become the capital of a vast empire, that the Forum became a place for celebrations.
  • The Citadel of ancient Rome , is a must for every visitor. A broad flight of steps (the Cordonata) leads up to Michelangelo's spectacular Piazza del Campidoglio .
  • The most incredible panoramic view of the entire Forum complex can be seen from the magnificent Terraces of Campidoglio (Capital Hill). Here you can observe the imposing ruins of Basilica Emilia , the only remaining Republican basilica, or the Curia , which was once the seat of the Senate.
  • This is flanked by the Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo dei Conservatori , housing the Capitoline Museum with their fine collections of sculptures and paintings.
  • We will take some time to view more than 200 paintings from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries that are on display here, including those by Titian , Pietro da Cortona , Caravaggio , Guercino , Rubens and others.
  • Taking centre stage in the piazza itself is a replica of the bronze statue of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius .
  • After a fascinating day in Rome come back to our Rome hotel.
  • Check out of our Hotel.
  • Today, we bid “Arrivederci” to Rome, transferring to Fumincino Airport for our flight home.
  • We arrive in the USA in the early afternoon, exhausted but exhilarated from twelve days exploring the life of Christ, and the life of Ancient Rome.

Guided You’re accompanied by a Tour Manager throughout the extension, except for any time that’s set aside for independent discovery.

  • Jerusalem - Border Crossing - Petra
  • This morning, travel to the Jordan Valley, crossing the border* into Jordan. Upon arrival, embark on an afternoon-long bus ride through the desertic countryside towards the ancient city of Petra. Arrive in Wadi Musa, Petra’s modern-day settlement, for a 2-night stay. This evening, experience the flavors of the region during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Early this morning, travel the short distance from your hotel to the archeological site of Petra (UNESCO). Enjoy a full day walking tour of this remarkable stone-carved city, one of the new Wonders of the World. This remarkable treasure of the ancient world remained “hidden” behind rugged mountains prior to its discovery in 1812 after being lost for over 500 years. Explore these breathtaking ruins, carved from sandstone by the Nabataeans and learn about the importance of Petra to the ancient trade routes, the history of its prominence and decline, its rediscovery, and efforts at preservation.
  • Petra - Wadi Rum - Dead Sea
  • Depart for the immense desert of Wadi Rum, stunning in its natural beauty and home of the famous film, Lawrence of Arabia. Experience desert life and learn about the fascinating history of the Bedouin people who have lived for generations in the Wadi Rum’s stark, fragile and unspoiled desert. Pause for lunch at a local campsite before relaxing on an afternoon-long transfer to the Jordanian shore of the Dead Sea. Arrive in the late afternoon and enjoy sunset overlooking the Promised Land.
  • Take advantage of your hotel’s private access to the beach and enjoy a morning at leisure to experience the Dead Sea’s natural buoyancy. Then travel to Madaba, the “City of Mosaics.” Meet the local community during a home hosted lunch and savor traditional Jordanian hospitality as you connect with your hosts over a traditional meal. In the afternoon, visit the church of St. George to see the famous 6th-century Byzantine mosaic map of the region, one of the oldest in existence. Then pause at Mt. Nebo, where Moses saw the Promised Land – present day Israel – and is believed to be laid to rest.
  • Dead Sea - Depart for Home
  • Transfer to the Queen Alia International Airport for your flight.

Hotel-Isrotel Sea Tower Hotel Tel Aviv

Hotel-Dan Panorama Jerusalem

Discover the treasures of Jerusalem by night, a beacon of three faiths. By bus, enjoy stunning views of the Old City walls, Temple Mount and Mount Zion. On foot, walk through Jaffa gate to the Old City (UNESCO), which combines ancient beauty with timeless allure, and visit the Citadel (also known as the Tower of David). The walls of the Citadel serve as a stage for a “Night Spectacular” show which is a celebration of sight and sound. Amidst the archaeological remains in the Citadel’s courtyard and set to the sound of original music, the story of Jerusalem unfolds through giant breathtaking, virtual reality images celebrating Jerusalem's spiritual and historical role across the centuries.

Venture to the Judean Hills and spend your afternoon in the city of Bethlehem. This historic city is known as the birthplace of Jesus. It is also regarded in Judaism as the hometown of King David and where he was crowned as the king of Israel. Make your way through the town on foot with an expert guide, feeling as if you’ve stepped into another time. You’ll visit the historic Church of the Nativity – built upon the site of where Jesus was born. The church was constructed in the 4th century, and its weathered stone facades allude to its age. Return to Jerusalem in the evening.

Israel and Rome Extension

We chose the tour - Roots of Your Faith - Israel and Rome. Israel was a pilgramage and Rome was a tour. We had read the reviews of AIT and decided to spend our hard earned vacation dollars there on a trip that we were spiritually led to take. The Israel leg of the trip was perfection in every way - mostly due to our guide, Shira. She cared for her American flock with love and sensitivity (she has an uncanny cross cultural sensitivity to people from cultures different from her own). Her knowledge pf the Bible, passion for the subject and the land and well executed leadership of the area made a sometimes physically difficult trip feasible and meaningful for a mixed group of ages. We did quite a bit of walking in the heat - but it didn't matter because of the way she paced the tour. She knew why many of us were there and was able to guide our steps in Israel - one of the most beautiful and innovative countries we have been to (by the way, the food was unbelievably fresh, healthy, and delicious). I cannot say enough positive things about Israel! Shira also encouraged group cohesion and interaction - a wonderful fellowship of like-minded people! The Rome leg was a tour. While there are unbelievable sites to be seen in Rome, we were on our own and joined other tours that had various levels of organization. The hotel LaGriffe was wonderful and so was the staff there (they had a real doorman - complete with a morning suit and top hat) We did run into some logistical glitches in Rome and the customer service was almost nonexistent. Fortunately, we were able to figure things out, but it was not without money and time loss. As one tour guide from the U.S. on the Vatican tour said, unsolicited from us - 'organization is not Italy's strong suit.' I would have rated this 5 stars except for the Rome glitches. We would recommend AIT for the Israel tour, with no reservations. Israel is at the heart of the roots of Christian faith. If you want to take a tour that covers the roots of your faith, Rome may be optional for you, but you do need to go to Israel; Thank you AIT, Shira, and Oren - our driver. He was a hero in maneuvering a bus through small spaces and such a gentle man (we actually wanted to bring him home as our new best friend). Ken and Leah Subak

Egypt blends 2000 AD and 2000 BC in a successful harmony. Petra is absoluteely amazzing. EExperiencing Christ's passion made my faith alive.

My Dad and I just got back from an AIT tour. Words cannot express what an experience it was. Our guide Shira Bosa was incredible. And our bus driver Oren kept us all so safe. Each day is filled with knowledge and adventure. We were very well taken care of at each hotel we went to. I am most definitely planning a trip back with more family and recommending AIT to anybody that is interested in exploring their Faith. I learned so much and met some life long friends within our group and even made a friend from another group.

What an amazing and spiritually rewarding experience for my husband Howard and I! The tour was truly phenomenal! Well organized and fulfilling every expectation as we followed in the footsteps of Jesus! We were able to experience all major sites starting at the Old Jaffa City, Nazareth, Tel Megiddo, the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Mount of Beatitudes, the Jordan River, Masada, Beit She’an Caesarea Philippi, Magdala, and the Dead Sea. We visited Bethlehem and the Church of the Nativity where Jesus was born. The highlight of our trip was of course, Jerusalem! The Holiest City in the world. We started at the Mount of Olives, cried at the Garden of Gethsemane, touched the Western Wall, were in the Upper Room, prayed together on the Via Dolorosa, and saw the ruins of the Pool of Bethesda, We marveled at the Garden Tomb, culminating at the great Church of the Holy Sepulchre! There was so much more we saw! The food buffets were varied and delicious and the shopping fulfilling! Our tour guide, Shira, was outstanding making our trip very educational and spiritual! Shira touched our souls with her warmth! We couldn’t have had a better guide! Shira is the best! To da, Shira!

We booked our first trip to Israel with American Israel tours in 2017, after such a great trip, we didn't research other companies for our trip June 2019. As others stated in the debrief before leaving Jerusalem, they would not change a thing. By far the best tour company we have ever used. The trip is well organized, they will keep you informed, and very responsive to questions prior to departure. We had the experience of two different guides, both were extremely knowledgable, very professional and made the trip most enjoyable. If and when we are able to make a third trip, we will look no further than America Israel Tours.

This is the 6th time we've chosen America Israel Tours for our 10 day Israel pilgrimage. Their professional yet personal service and expertise is unmatched, the quality they provide is 1st rate, and the cost highly competitive!

Holy Land Pilgrimage & Jerusalem Pilgrimage

Nothing brings the Gospels to life like a Catholic Holy Land Pilgrimage Tour to the Holy Land with a Jerusalem stay in 2024 or 2025. During this pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Israel, you will walk in the Footsteps of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the Apostles, visiting and celebrating daily Mass in the most important Shrines and Basilicas of Christianity. You will visit the Basilica of the Annunciation, where the Angel of the Lord appeared to the Virgin Mary, and she professed her Magnificat. You will visit Bethlehem and celebrate the birth of Christ at the Church of the Nativity .  During this Holy Land Pilgrimage tour, you will have the opportunity to renew your baptismal vows at the Jordon River and your wedding vows in Cana, where Jesus performed His first Miracle. You will spend two days around the Sea of Galilee where Jesus began His ministry, preaching to thousands as He gave His sermon on the Mount of Beatitudes, and miraculously fed the multitudes with fish and loaves of bread. The highlight of the Holy Land Pilgrimage Tour will be in pilgrimage to Jerusalem where you will pray in the Garden of Gethsemane and experience the Lord’s Passion along the Via Dolorosa , also known as the Way of the Cross, on the way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which marks the place where Jesus was put to death on Calvary, and was buried and rose again! Visits to Mount Tabor,  Sepphoris , Bethany, and Jericho are just some of the other places that you will visit on this Holy Land Pilgrimage Tour. Each day, early in the morning on this Holy Land Pilgrimage we were off and running. The driver of the van was a very safe and considerate driver who not only ensured that we arrived at all our assigned destinations on time, but he also ensured that there was plenty of water for all of us to drink as the weather was very hot and we needed to constantly hydrate our bodies. All Holy Site visits were well-planned, and our tour guide was well known by the guards and site coordinators and several occasions we were even granted head of line privileges.

Every day of our journey was fruitful and fulfilling and we were given the opportunity to visit and spend ample time at each site identified in the Catholic Journey Pilgrimage Brochure. In fact, we even visited some sites that were not scheduled and not offered in the itinerary. Confession and spiritual direction were announced as available and was provided as requested and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated each day with the group. Every morning, on the tour motor coach, I led a recitation of The Holy Rosary or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Everybody joined in and I’m sure that our pilgrimage was blessed and especially protected by the Blessed Virgin Mother of God because during this pilgrimage, I was hit from behind by an electric motor bike. However, I was not seriously hurt and there were no injuries to the operator of the electric motor bike.

On the last day of the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, we went to the Via Dolorosa, and I led stations of the cross all the way to Golgotha where I was privileged to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

This Holy Land Pilgrimage was a dream come true for me because when I was ordained to the presbyterate, I was scheduled to go to the Holy Land This trip was on my bucket list of things I wanted to do and an answer to my prayer. Due to our very close group interaction and relationships, we developed with each other, we now have new spiritual families (members of our pilgrimage group). Each of the nine members of our group have called or texted me and each other and assured us of their prayers & support.

Words cannot express my gratitude to Catholic Journeys for giving me this great opportunity to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land as group Spiritual Director. I commend Catholic Journeys for hiring knowledgeable guides and skilled driver for these pilgrimages. May God continue to Bless & Protect You and All Pilgrims that make this Extraordinary Journey to the Holy Land through Catholic Journeys.

Reverend Father Daniel L. Dashner,

Patrick and Linda

We went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land on 9/17 and returned 9/26. We celebrated our 30th Anniversary first by renewing our vows in Cana and spending last full day on our actual Anniversary with a special Mass at Golgotha and a visit to the Tomb.

Our guide was an extraordinary mix of historian, geography, religion and Shepherd! He kept us all safe and taken care of whatever we needed.

Our Priest, Father Dan, is now the head of our Pilgrimage Family and we are grateful to God and everyone at Catholic Journeys for making this possible!

The pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land was wonderful and David, our guide, was fantastic. I was amazed at his knowledge and wish I could have recorded the entire trip. Unfortunately I became ill on the flight over so wasn’t able to fully enjoy trip. Sadly I have been diagnosed with cancer and would appreciate prayers. My roommate was also wonderful to me. Please add me to your prayer list. ✝️🙏🙏🙏🙏

Margaret and Richard

Our pilgrimage to the Holy Land was amazing. Everything was perfect from the time we were picked up at the airport until the day we departed. We had the best tour guide David. I felt blessed each day by his vast amount of knowledge. We were able to gain access to the most beautiful basilicas and had Mass each day. I felt very cared for and safe the entire pilgrimage. I would recommend Catholic Journey to everyone who is considering a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

The pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land was awesome despite the heat. Our guide was a wealth of knowledge. David, our tour guide was so passionate about his country and so willing to share his knowledge.

Day 2: Arrival Jordan

We arrive in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and transfer to our lodging for the evening in Amman. Enjoy dinner, retire to your room and be ready for an early departure in the morning. (D)

Day 3: Jerash, Petra

jerusalem and rome tour

This morning we travel to Jerash, one of the best preserved and most complete provincial Roman cities. Jerash, Gerasa of Roman Times, was one of the cities of the Decapolis, a confederation of 10 Graeco-Roman cities dating from the 1st century BC situated in Jordan, Syria and Israel. Known as the Pompeii of the East for its extraordinary state of preservation, the ruins indicate human occupations at this location for more than 2,500 years. From here, we continue on to our lodging for the evening in Petra. (B, D)

Day 4: Petra

Early this morning we turn southward toward the amazing mountain fortress of Petra, known to be inhabited by the Edomites - the descendants of Esau. Begin the tour with a walk through the "Siq," an immense crack in the Nubian sandstone, to the city of Petra carved out of the rose red rock. The Treasury, El Khazneh, is one of the most elegant remains of antiquity. Beyond El Khazneh we are surrounded on both sides by hundreds of Petra's carved and built structures. Departing Petra, we travel northward on the King's Highway where to the west we view the hills bordering the Dead Sea. This is the area of the hilltop palace/fortress of Machaerus, where John the Baptist was beheaded. We overnight in Amman this evening. (B, D)

Day 5: Mt Nebo, Madaba, Tel Aviv

jerusalem and rome tour

Our morning tour begins in the town of Madaba, the biblical Medeba, 30 kilometers south of Amman. Madaba is best known for its Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics and at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George we view the earliest surviving mosaic map of the Holy land. Mt. Nebo, believed to be the site of the tomb of Moses, commands a spectacular view across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Study the panorama as we read the scripture of God showing Moses the "Promised Land" before He brought him home to heaven. As we travel west toward the Allenby Bridge, we view to the north the Plains of Moab, the area where the tribes of Israel camped before crossing the Jordan and picture the place where Jesus was baptized. Crossing back into Israel, we drive to Tel Aviv area with the remainder of the afternoon free. You may wish to take a devotional time with the sunset over the “Great Sea,” a time of prayer and thanks for the special blessings ahead, a prayer for the people of this land, and then enjoy a good night’s rest. (B, D)

Day 6: Caesarea, Megiddo & Nazareth

jerusalem and rome tour

After breakfast, we travel by private motor coach along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea to Caesarea, where Gentiles first heard the Good News from Peter and were baptized. We’ll see a Roman Amphitheatre, hippodrome, and other remains of this famous port city, as well as a film on history and an aqueduct before we journey through the Mt. Carmel range, where Elijah challenged King Ahab and the prophets of Baal. Next, we travel through the Jezreel Valley to Megiddo, the Armageddon Battlefield, where archaeologists have unearthed twenty levels of civilization. We drive through the area of Cana and Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus, where we visit the Nazareth Village, a wonderful recreation of Biblical times with costumed guides. We will have dinner and overnight lodging for the next two nights in the Tiberias area on the Sea of Galilee.

Day 7: Dan, Caesarea Philippi, Jesus Boat, Sea of Galilee Boat Ride, Magdala

jerusalem and rome tour

Following breakfast, our morning travels take us to two valuable northern sites. Dan is where the children of Israel fell to the depths of alternative sacrifice and Caesarea Philippi, the site of Peter’s confession and pagan worship. We pass the possible site of the multiplication of loaves and fishes in Bethsaida and the Mount of the Beatitudes. Returning to Galilee for a St. Peter’s fish lunch (other selections available), we then visit the ancient fisherman boat followed by a relaxing cruise on the Sea of Galilee. A brief scripture reading and devotional on board brings to life the experiences of Jesus and the fishermen disciples. We conclude our day with a visit to Magdala, hometown of Mary Magdalene. The recent excavation of the first century synagogue and well-preserved village makes Magdala one of the most interesting Biblical sites in Israel.

Day 8: Capernaum, Corazin, Mt. Arbel, Jordan River Baptism Site

jerusalem and rome tour

Today we visit the Biblical towns of Capernaum and Corazin. Capernaum is located along the Sea of Galilee and was the hometown of Peter. It is likely where Jesus and the disciples lived during much of His ministry while in Galilee. Next, we visit Corazin which offers another example of a Jewish synagogue and a replica of the “Seat of Moses” which was carved out of the local basalt block and from which the scribes and Pharisees would have read the Torah. We enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Galilee region atop Mt. Arbel. Mt. Arbel could likely be the location that Jesus would get away from the crowds to take time in prayer with His heavenly Father. Here our guide will point out the various towns listed in scripture during the time of Jesus. We conclude our day with an opportunity to be baptized at the Jordan River Baptismal Site.

Day 9: Beit Shean, Bethany Beyond Jordan, Abraham's Tent, Mt. of Olives & Garden of Gethsemane

jerusalem and rome tour

We travel southward this morning to Beit-Shean/Scythopolis, the most magnificent archeological site in Israel, located at the strategic juncture of the Jezreel and Jordan valleys. Like Jericho, it has been almost continuously occupied throughout history. After defeating Saul and his sons on Mt. Gilboa, the Philistines hanged their bodies on the walls of Beit-Shean. During the time of Jesus, Scythopolis was one of the chief cities of the Decapolis - a league of ten cities sharing Greek culture and government. Following the fertile Jordan Valley southward, your guide will point out the agricultural restoration of the “Land of Milk and Honey” and Israel’s intricate irrigation development. We pass ancient Jericho and view from a distance this city famed as the oldest in the world. To the east of Jericho along the Jordan River Valley (Queser El Yehud) is the Israeli side of Bethany Beyond the Jordan. In this area Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist; Elijah and Elisha crossed the Jordan; and the children of Israel, led by Joshua, entered the Promised Land. This afternoon we will take part in the Genesis Land/Dinner in Abraham's Tent, where we enjoy a trip back in time to relive life in the time of the Patriarchs, complete with costume, dramatic presentation, camel ride and authentic food. Arriving in Jerusalem we’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the Old City atop the Mt. of Olives and then the Garden of Gethsemane. How many have wished to be whisked back in time to get a glimpse of our Lord or hear His voice if only for a moment? To walk between the ancient olive trees, read the scriptures of Jesus' prayer and take time for personal reflection is important here. We will have dinner and overnight lodging for the next four nights in Jerusalem.

Day 10: Masada, Ein Gedi, Dead Sea Scrolls, Dead Sea Swim

jerusalem and rome tour

Our day begins with a cable car ride to the mountain top fortress of Masada. Here our guide will treat us to the history of the famous zealot stand. Afterwards we proceed to Ein Gedi, "Spring of the Goat," an oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea. Because of its warm climate and abundant supply of water, the site developed a reputation for its fragrant plants and date palm groves. This is where King David hid from Saul and where God defeated the enemies of the Israelites by praise and worship led by King Jehoshaphat. Next, we visit the Qumran Caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. This afternoon we have an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing float in the Dead Sea.

Day 11: Jesus’ Steps, Western Walls, Southern Steps, Way of Suffering, Garden Tomb

jerusalem and rome tour

Today we walk where Jesus walked, beginning the day with a visit to the Wailing Wall and then the fascinating Rabbinical Tunnels leading us through the Second Temple era. The tunnel and exhibit give a clear understanding of the amazing construction of the Temple Mount, giant stones, water supply and Roman street where our Lord was led to judgment. Before exiting the tunnel, we see the immense cornerstone rejected by the builders. Next, we visit the Southern Wall Excavations. This southern side of The Temple was the main entrance for the common folk, whereas the Priests and Levites had their own entrance from the higher eastern side. Parts of the giant stairs, which led to the Temple Mount from the courtyard have been unearthed along with the purification pools. From here Jesus entered the Temple Mount and drove out the vendors and money exchangers who were exploiting the people. It is also likely that this is the place where Peter stood and preached and where thousands were saved and baptized on the Day of Pentecost. This afternoon we move on to the Judgment Hall of Pilate, hear of those who conspired against Him and are reminded of His brutal beating and humiliation. From here we will also be able to see the Pool of Bethesda, Stephen's Gate, and St. Anne’s Church. While walking along the Via Dolorosa, we are reminded of His way of suffering along with a visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Our guide will explain the differing opinions on the route where Christ was led. (The actual place of crucifixion and burial is a very interesting study!) The climax of the day is the area of Golgotha (place of the skull) and the Garden Tomb, where we celebrate the resurrection with communion and a time of praise.

Day 12: Israel Museum, Friends of Zion Museum, Bethlehem

jerusalem and rome tour

An interesting and educational time awaits us today at the Israeli Museum. Walk through collections of century’s old Israeli artifacts including the Dead Sea Scrolls, and then a guided walk through an accurately detailed model of Biblical Jerusalem. This model will help put into perspective all that you have seen over the previous days’ touring. We then visit the Friends of Zion Museum to learn of the 19th and 20th century heroes of the Jewish people. We spend the remainder of the day surrounding the birth of Christ with a visit to Bethlehem. This evening we enjoy a special lecture by a local believer prior to dinner, giving us a perspective of Messianic life in Israel.

Day 13: Arrive Athens

jerusalem and rome tour

We fly to Athens and check into our hotel. You will have the remainder of the day free to relax or take a stroll along the streets of Athens to enjoy the flavor of the city. This evening our group will enjoy the first of many delectable European style dinners. (B, D)

Day 14: Cruising Mykonos

We sail this morning from Athens to the quaint isle of Mykonos, called the island of windmills. Experience the waterfront lined with shops and cafes and then stroll the charming walkways through a maze of whitewashed buildings before returning to the ship for dinner and evening entertainment. (B, D) (B, D)

Day 15: Ephesus and Patmos

jerusalem and rome tour

Docking in Turkey, enjoy a tour of Ephesus, the city of the Bible and one of the largest restorations still in progress with miles of ancient treasures. Ephesus was once a thriving port town of 250,000 people. Today you can still see the spectacular excavations of the major streets in this ancient city including the Agora, the Odeon, the Library, the marble-paved main Street, the Baths, Trajan’s Fountain, the Residences of the Patricians, the Prytaneum, and Temple of Hadrian. The Great Theatre, built in the 4th century B.C., could accommodate 24,000 spectators and it is famous even nowadays for its acoustics. This afternoon we visit the Isle of Patmos, under statutory protection as a historic monument. Here we have a tour to see the fortified monastery of St. John and the cave claimed to be where John received the Revelation. Back on the ship, enjoy the Captain's dinner before settling in to your cabin for the night. (B, D)

Day 16: Crete & Beautiful Santorini

jerusalem and rome tour

Crete is the largest and the most rugged of the Greek islands. Take a tour to Heraklion and the fantastic ruins of the Palace of Knossos. Discovered in 1899 and partially reconstructed, the elaborate Palace is believed to be the mythical Labyrinth of King Minos and the seat of ancient Minoan culture. This afternoon visit the island of Santorini which is perhaps the most breathtaking of all the Greek Islands. You may choose to take an optional panoramic bus tour viewing some of the most spectacular scenery of the Aegean. Travel through countless villages and settlements with delicate architecture and beauties eventually arriving in Oia. During your time in Oia, visit the many narrow streets, open-air cafes and glittering boutiques. Upon returning to the ship, we view the lace-like caldera, the little islands of Thirasia, Palea, & Nea Kameni. We arrive at the ship for dinner and evening entertainment. (B, D)

Day 17: Disembark Cruise – Ancient Corinth & Cenchreae

jerusalem and rome tour

We disembark the cruise this morning and travel west with a rest stop and photos at the Corinth Canal. Next, we visit ancient Corinth, the city that inspired many of Paul's most familiar letters and is a highlight for the New Testament scholar. See the Archaeological Museum, the Market Place, the Bema, and the Temples. To enjoy a devotional in the midst of the ruins of the church of Corinth and see the pillars, steps, and public worship place where Paul preached will enhance your understanding and love for the Bible. The ruins of this important cultural center are fascinating as we walk along the stone path that the Apostle Paul walked. The engineering skill and intellect of these people are evident in the water systems that still flow from ancient to modern day. Our guide will be sure to show you the room dedicated to the medical care of that period. We travel on to the top of the nearby Acropolis where our guide will speak on the worship practices and point out the bird’s eye view of what was a bustling city of around 800,000 during Paul’s stay. Another important stop is a visit to Diolkos where we view the paved trackway which enabled boats to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth and served as a life line for Corinth. This shortcut allowed ancient vessels to avoid the long and dangerous circumnavigation of the Peloponnese peninsula. Before returning to Athens, we will visit Cenchreae, the ancient port region of Corinth. Acts 18:18 states the Apostle Paul stopped at Cenchreae during his second missionary journey, where he had his hair cut to fulfill a vow. (B, D)

Day 18: Athens

jerusalem and rome tour

Following breakfast this morning we tour Athens, the foundation of democracy. We visit the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and Erectheum before viewing Athens atop Mars Hill where Paul stood and preached the truth to the Gentile nation. From atop Mars Hill we view the Agora below, the ancient market place and center of Athenian public life. Additional sites viewed during our panoramic bus tour are, the House of Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Olympic Stadium, and Presidential Palace. An option later this afternoon is a visit to the famous Plaka with a multitude of shops and cafes. (B, D)

Day 19: Arrive Rome

We arrive at the Rome airport and transfer our lodging for the next three nights. This afternoon we will take an afternoon tour of the Catacombs where thousands of Christians were buried in a remarkable tiered series of galleries. (D)

Day 20: Forum, Mamertine, Coliseum, Ostia Antica

jerusalem and rome tour

We begin our walking tour at the ancient Roman Forum, where our guide will divulge its secrets. We will visit the Arch of Titus which commemorated the sack of Jerusalem by Titus in AD 70. We will view the Mamertine Prison exterior, where tradition says the Apostle Paul was imprisoned. The Roman church would say that Peter was imprisoned here as well, but there is no imperial evidence that Peter was ever in Rome. Next, we visit the Coliseum, where thousands of people and animals perished during gladiatorial games. The Coliseum first opened in AD 80 and within 100 days of its opening, 5000 wild beasts perished here. The slaughter of both humans and animals continued for three more centuries. Historians believe the Coliseum could hold between 40,000 and 80,000 people depending on how close the seating was. The floor has recently had a plank placed over the middle making it accessible for people to walk over the labyrinth of brick cells, ramps, and elevators used to transport animals and gladiators into the arena. Hear the stories of the games that have fascinated people for hundreds of years. We conclude our day at the ruins of Ostia Antica, which provides an excellent example of city life in classical times and the Ostian Gate, today called the Gate of St. Paul. (B)

Day 21: Vatican Museums, St. Peter's, Scala Santa, Abbey of Three Fountains, St. Paul Outside the Wall

jerusalem and rome tour

After breakfast you will begin a full day of sightseeing. First visit Vatican City where you will see the Basilica at St. Peter, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums with stunning works of art at every turn. After some free time for lunch, you will stop at The Abbey of the Three Fountains, the traditional site of Paul's martyrdom and the ancient street that he walked on. Next, visit the 4th century Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the site of Paul’s tomb, and the Scala Santa, where Martin Luther made his stand against the practice of indulgences. This fascinating museum houses the Steps from Pilot's Judgment Hall in Jerusalem brought to Rome by Helena, the mother of Constantine. Additional sights include the Arches of Constantine and Titus, Circus Maximus and the beautiful marble monument called the Wedding Cake.(B)

Day 22: Home

This morning we transfer to the airport for our flight home. (B)

*The tour itinerary is subject to change or be slightly modified in order to best meet the interests of the group. Important Note: Although the itinerary above obviously emphasizes the spiritual aspect of this marvelous country, our guides are also experts in and passionate about the miracle of the return of the Jews and the restoration of the state of Israel. This fact, along with many modern day topics (military, politics, education, and other cultural aspects), will be woven into the commentary in order to give you well rounded information.
