Things To Do

Things to do | jazz review: jon faddis’ triumphant return; dr. lonnie smith’s majestic hammond b-3.

Trumpeter Jon Faddis, shown in 2017, returned to Chicago to close Symphony Center's jazz season.

In 1994, trumpeter Jon Faddis starred in “The Newport Jazz Festival on Tour,” a concert that launched a promising new jazz series in Orchestra Hall.

On Friday night, Faddis returned to the same stage, closing the Symphony Center Presents Jazz series’ 25th anniversary season – and reminding Chicagoans of how much he has been missed.

For from 2004 through 2010, Faddis served as artistic director of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, a mighty band that, alas, ceased operating in 2012. During those years, Faddis was practically ubiquitous on the Chicago scene, leading the CJE in concert halls and clubs, performing in festivals large and small, teaching and coaching young people at Columbia College Chicago (where the CJE was based) and elsewhere.

The combination of Faddis’ hypervirtuosity and charismatic stage manner made him a larger-than-life presence in Chicago jazz, and that’s the persona that dominated Friday night’s Orchestra Hall concert.

Yes, Faddis shared his program with fellow trumpeters Tanya Darby, Ingrid Jensen and Chicagoan Pharez Whitted, each a voice well worth hearing. But whenever Faddis brought the horn to his lips, the sheer size of his sound, brilliance of his tone and speed of his runs inevitably placed everything else in the background. So although Faddis was generous in sharing the spotlight with his colleagues, there was no question who shaped this set.

The four trumpeters came out swinging with “Blues Walk,” which emerged as a tour de force of unison playing. When it came time for each to solo, however, Faddis’ colleagues sounded more tentative than one might have expected. Faddis’ soliloquy, however, proved a model of controlled heat, the trumpeter starting with a muted statement that soon burst forth with power and velocity.

Then Faddis ceded the stage to his fellow trumpeters. Darby offered a lyrically inspired account of Billy Strayhorn’s “Upper Manhattan Medical Group” (though Kiyoshi Kitagawa’s bass was overamplified here and elsewhere). Whitted produced some of the most melodically subtle work we’ve heard from him in the ballad “I Thought About You.” Jensen unfurled poetically crafted solos in a merger of Thad Jones’ “A Child is Born” and Duke Ellington’s “Purple Gazelle.”

When it came time for Faddis to reclaim the stage, he began with a few words.

“We’re here because Wayne Shorter isn’t feeling so well,” said Faddis, acknowledging that this concert indeed was to have featured the legendary saxophonist-composer, 85, who had cancelled.

“So we want to play something for Wayne.”

The tenderness with which Faddis began “I Can’t Get Started” said a great deal about his regard for Shorter, who played this stage many times. It didn’t take long, however, for Faddis to return to herculean form, along the way quoting everything from Randy Weston’s “Hi-Fly” to Ferde Grofe’s “Grand Canyon Suite.”

For the finale, all four horns joined forces again in Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia,” in effect a tribute to the trumpeter-composer who influenced Faddis most, and whose legacy Faddis carries forth.

The evening opened with a set from Dr. Lonnie Smith, who walked slowly and tenuously to the Hammond B-3 organ. Once he got there, however, Smith conjured a regal presence. He didn’t play a lot of notes, but the majesty and spaciousness of his extended chords, the flashes of melody that erupted from them and the surging energy of his delivery made impact. Guitarist Dave Stryker and drummer Joe Dyson augmented Smith’s playing without getting in the way – and they made sure the organist remained the center of attention.

You can bring a taste of the forest to your garden by planting a few of the wildflowers that bloom in spring in our native woods. Many woodland plants flower in early spring to take advantage of the sunshine that reaches the forest floor before trees open their leaves. “They’ve evolved to seize that opportunity,” said Spencer Campbell, Plant Clinic manager at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle. These wildflowers are known as spring ephemerals, he said, because “you only see them for a short time in spring before they go dormant and disappear for the rest of the year.” Sharp-lobed […]

  • Has Influenced

Born in Oakland, CA, on July 24, 1953, Jon Faddis began playing trumpet at age eight, inspired by an appearance of Louis Armstrong on "The Ed Sullivan Show." Three years later, his trumpet teacher Bill Catalano, an alumnus of the Stan Kenton band, turned the jazz- struck youngster on to Dizzy Gillespie. By his mid-teens, Jon had not only met Dizzy, he'd even sat in with his hero's combo at the famed Jazz Workshop in San Francisco.

Upon graduating high school in 1971, Jon joined Lionel Hampton's band as a featured soloist and moved to New York. That same year, responding to an invitation from Mel Lewis to drop by the Village Vanguard whenever he got to New York, Jon sat in with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band on one of their regular Monday night sessions. That sit-in turned into four years of Monday nights playing with the band, as well as a tour of the Soviet Union with the highly acclaimed unit. Jan also toured with Charles Mingus and recorded on the Pablo label with Dizzy and Oscar Peterson.

Other highlights included filling in (at age of 18) for an ailing Roy Eldridge in an all-star concert led by Charles Mingus at New York's Philharmonic Hall; a Carnegie Hall gig with Sarah Vaughan; two years in attendance at the Annual Colorado Jazz Party where he was featured in a historic duet with Eubie Blake; performances with Gil Evans' and Count Basie's big bands; appearances at Radio City Music Hall and festivals here and abroad; and sitting in with Dizzy whenever possible.

In light of these accomplishments — his recognition in the jazz polls, myriad accolades from the critical press, burgeoning numbers of international fans, heady praise from the likes of Diz, Mingus and Mel Lewis, and the pressure of public life — is it any wonder that a (then) 20- year old Jon Faddis opted for the sequestered life of the studio musician? However, those studio years ultimately proved significant in his artistic development. Exposure to a diverse spectrum of music helped shape him into the broad-based interpreter and (creator in) African-American idioms that he is today. Jon's distinctive trumpet voice would be heard on albums by performers as disparate as Duke Ellington, the Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Kool and the Gang, Luther Vandross, Quincy Jones, Billy Joel and Stanley Clarke, to name a few. His horn was heard on the theme of "The Cosby Show," on the soundtrack of Clint Eastwood's films "The Gauntlet" and "Bird," and on many commercials. Jon Faddis had become one of the most in-demand session musicians in New York. A turning point was the invitation from Dizzy to accompany him on a visit to the White House in 1982. The occasion was an "In Performance" ceremony in which Dizzy and several other major American artists showcased young colleagues they believed to be "on the verge of exceptional careers." Jon's participation in the event was apparently enough to convince him he had a lot more to offer than horn section lead on jingles, or the occasional solo (often uncredited) on a lavish studio production of a pop star.

Within a year, he left studio life and was out on the club scene with a working group that included saxophonist Greg Osby and pianist James Williams. In 1987, Jon played the major role in organizing and rehearsing Dizzy's big band, the one that would celebrate the legendary bebopper's 70th birthday on tour here and abroad. Jon was a featured soloist and later assumed the same position as musical director of Dizzy's United Nation Orchestra, another international touring all-star group formed in 1989.

In December 1991 Jon Faddis was appointed musical director of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, an 18 piece all-star orchestra which serves as a vehicle for some of the greatest names in Jazz to present concerts that are not part of their regular repertoire. The band made its debut in October, 1992, and released its first album on the Blue Note label in 1995. During the late nineties, Faddis toured with the Jimmy Heath-Slide Hampton-Jon Faddis sextet. He also played an important role in the development of the Trumpet Summit Band, which has featured a who is who of the current trumpet scene, from Clark Terry and Benny Bailey to Roy Hargrove, Terell Stafford and Nicholas Payton.

Faddis has an enduring commitment to the accessible and quality education of young musicians, regularly leading master classes nationally and internationally. In May 2003, Faddis received Manhattan School of Music's first-ever honorary doctorate in Jazz Studies, becoming Dr. Jon Faddis. In 2002, he received the JD Award for excellence in teaching in New York City high schools; among numerous others, he has received the Milt Jackson Award for Excellence and Accessibility in Jazz.

In 1999, Faddis became the first Artist-in-Residence at Purchase College (SUNY) where he continues to serve as Artist-in-Residence and Professor and is, as of 2002, Director of Jazz Performance at the Conservatory of Music. On December 6, 2002, Faddis informally premiered original compositions based on sixty-three works by Romare Bearden at the Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College.

Faddis also serves on a number of boards and advisory boards, including The Commission Project, the Jazz Foundation of America, the International Trumpet Guild, the International Association for Jazz Education, and the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. Additionally, he is actively involved with Jazz Alliance International (among other things, serving in September of 2002, as Musical Director for a benefit and scholarship program honoring Fats Navarro). In October 2003, Faddis served as music director for the opening celebrations for the Louis Armstrong House & Archives, coordinating over 100 musicians, including over fifteen of the world's best trumpet players, in tribute to Armstrong.

Il 22 aprile scorso nel centenario della nascita di Charles Mingus la Resonance Records ha pubblicato un altro magistrale inedito storico. Ci riferiamo a The Lost Album from Ronnie Scott's, registrato nell'agosto 1972 dalla CBS britannica nel celebre locale londinese. Non è tanto un disco perduto ma un documento accantonato per decenni, che vede protagonista l'inedito sestetto del bassista in una fase di transizione. Charles Mingus was larger than life as a composer, performer and bandleader. A writer of frequently difficult music, Mingus was demanding of himself and his musicians, yet he never wanted his works to sound overly polished. These recordings made over two consecutive nights at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in jny: London in 1971 were recorded to be released on Columbia Records. Unfortunately, the gross incompetence of the label's president, Clive Davis, who dropped the entire jazz roster in 1973, except ...

After the emotional and economic bankruptcies of the late 1960s that nearly took him out of the picture entirely, 1972 broke well for Charles Mingus. He had re-signed with Columbia and delivered the revered Let My Children Hear Music. (He would, a year later, be part of the great Clive Davis jazz purge of 1973 which included Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, and, some argue Ornette Coleman.) Grants and commissions were coming in and his music, in all its bold, gnarly, ...

Professionally recorded for Columbia Records, but never released, this live concert from London's Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club is seeing the light of day some fifty years later, as well as marking the centennial celebration of Charles Mingus' birth. The music was never released, not because it was unworthy (it is indeed worthy), but because Mingus along with Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Keith Jarrett and Ornette Coleman were let go by the label's chief, Clive Davis. Only Miles Davis survived the ...

Even though listed on only four tracks, organist Mike LeDonne's superlative Groover Quartet performs on every one of the nine selections on LeDonne's admirable new recording, It's All Your Fault--and that's a good thing, as each member of the quartet (LeDonne, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, guitarist Peter Bernstein, drummer Joe Farnsworth) is an accomplished soloist and ardent team player. On the album's remaining tracks, the quartet is assimilated into LeDonne's seventeen- member big band, a taut and high-powered unit that ...

This 2-CD set takes the 1974 album Mingus At Carnegie Hall (Atlantic) and adds seventy minutes of previously unissued material recorded at the same concert. It is as worthwhile an addition to Charles Mingus' recorded legacy as 2020's previously unissued 2-CD set Charles Mingus @ Bremen 1964 & 1975 (Sunnyside). As a trumpeter, Faddis possesses a virtually unparalleled range and full command of his instrument, making the near impossible seem effortless. Born in 1953, Faddis began playing at age seven, inspired by an appearance by Louis Armstrong on television. Meeting Dizzy Gillespie at 15 proved to be a pivotal beginning of a unique friendship that spanned almost three decades. Shortly before his 18th birthday, Faddis joined Lionel Hampton’s band, and moved from Oakland, CA to New York. He worked as lead trumpet for the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra at the Village Vanguard (and on tour all around the world), formed his own quartet, and soon began directing orchestras, including the Grammy-winning United Nation Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie 70th Birthday Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, the Carnegie Hall Centennial Big Band, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (1992-2002), and the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York (2003-present). Faddis’ distinctive trumpet can be heard on hundreds of records and numerous soundtracks for film and television. Shortly after arriving in Manhattan, Faddis was invited to sit in with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra at the Village Vanguard; he rapidly became lead trumpeter for the band, touring the world. He soon formed his own quartet, and began directing orchestras, including the Grammy-winning United Nation Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie 70th Birthday Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble (2004-2010), the Carnegie Hall Centennial Big Band, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (1992-2002), and the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York (2003-present). Jon Faddis is a complete and consummate musician – conductor, composer and educator. Marked by both intense integrity and humor, Faddis earned accolades from his close friend and mentor John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, who declared, “(Faddis) is the best ever, including me!” As a trumpeter, Faddis possesses a virtually unparalleled range and full command of his instrument, making the practically impossible seem effortless. Born in 1953, Faddis began playing at age seven, inspired by an appearance by Louis Armstrong on The Ed Sullivan Show . Bill Catalano (an alumnus of the Stan Kenton band) hipped Faddis to the music of Dizzy Gillespie. Meeting Dizzy Gillespie at the Monterey Jazz Festival and then sitting in with him at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco proved to be a pivotal beginning of a unique friendship between Gillespie and Faddis, one that spanned almost three decades.

Two days before his 18th birthday, Faddis joined Lionel Hampton’s band as a featured soloist, moving from Oakland, CA to New York. Shortly after arriving in Manhattan, Faddis was invited to sit in with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra at the Village Vanguard. He rapidly became lead trumpeter for the band, touring the world. He soon formed his own quartet and began directing orchestras, including the Grammy-winning United Nation Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie 70th Birthday Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble (2004-2010), the Carnegie Hall Centennial Big Band, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (1992-2002), and the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York (2003-present). Faddis has also served as guest conductor and featured guest with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

Faddis’ distinctive trumpet appears on hundreds of records and numerous soundtracks for film and television. Faddis’ original compositions include the jazz opera Lulu Noire (1997) (named a “Top 10” pick by USA Today), other Faddis compositions may be heard on his Grammy®-nominated Remembrances (Chesky 1998), Hornucopia (Epic 1991), Into the Faddisphere (Epic 1989) and TERANGA (Koch 2006).

Faddis is known throughout the world as one of the most innovative and inspiring jazz trumpeters of our time. He has an unfailing commitment to the education of young musicians and frequently conducts clinics and master classes to help the next generation of jazz musicians. In Chicago, Faddis served as the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s first mentor for the Jazz Links program and also created the Louis Armstrong Legacy Program. Faddis is a full-time faculty member at the Conservatory of Music, Purchase College-SUNY, where he began in 1999 as Artist-in-Residence, becoming shortly after Professor and Director of Jazz Performance. Faddis holds the first-ever honorary doctorate in jazz from Manhattan School of Music (which he attended for about a semester when he was 18), as well as numerous other accolades and awards.

Whatever the context – classroom or concert hall – and whatever the style, Jon Faddis epitomizes the best in jazz.

GREENVILLE JOURNAL

For jazz trumpet player Jon Faddis, education and mentorship are key to the genre’s longevity

  • Vincent Harris
  • March 2, 2018

jon faddis tour

Trumpeter, bandleader, and educator Jon Faddis is one of the few jazz musicians who can still say he played with the legends of the genre. His credits include recordings and tours with Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Oscar Peterson, Kenny Burrell, and many others. In addition, Faddis has recorded a series of solo albums that touch on big-band, cool jazz, hard bop, orchestral, and Afro-Cuban music, albums that carry on the traditions of his mentors while honing his own dazzling skill as a high-range player who can hit notes that other players can only dream of.

Faddis, who will play a show March 8 at The Wheel in the Village of West Greenville, has also spent several decades teaching and holding master classes and workshops, most notably at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College-SUNY in Westchester County, New York.

This is probably a good time to mention that he also played trumpet on the Village People’s disco juggernaut, “Y.M.C.A.”

Needless to say, Faddis has had a rich, full career and maintains a busy schedule. But he’s playing this show at a small venue in Greenville because drummer Kevin Korschgen, who has been bringing a series of jazz shows to The Wheel for the past few years, reached out and asked him to. Faddis and Korschgen met in Chicago several years ago at one of Faddis’ workshops.

“We had a summer jazz camp, and I would go to schools and give master classes,” Faddis says. “And one of the people that I met doing that is Kevin. And he called me to come down to Greenville. He’s very much involved in the jazz scene down there, and we worked it out.”

Faddis will be playing in a quartet with pianist Mike Murray, bassist Tony DePaolis, and Korschgen, but he’s not sure yet what they’ll be playing.

“There’s no typical way I decide what to play, but it is going to depend on the musicians,” he says. “That’s what I base the repertoire on: what they’d like to play and what they know. And we’ll go from there.”

In addition to the aforementioned Village People date, Faddis has often augmented his jazz work with pop music sessions, including work with Billy Joel and Paul Simon. And unlike some purist musicians like Wynton Marsalis, he doesn’t see a problem with moving outside his genre.

“I think it broadened my appreciation for different kinds of music,” he says. “I’m influenced by things I hear. Some of the pop things I played on wouldn’t be my first choice, but they got my trumpet sound heard by millions of people. Plus, the money was really good in doing studio work.”

As for his educational endeavors, Faddis says they came naturally to him, both from his personal and professional lives.

“My father was a teacher,” he says. “And he instilled in me a desire to learn. And then when I met Dizzy and got to know him over a couple of decades, I would observe him and people like [trumpeter] Clark Terry and [Count Basie Orchestra stalwart] Sweets Edison. Whenever a young musician would ask them a question, they would take the time to answer it. If you asked Dizzy a question about music, he could sit down at the piano and start talking, and the next thing you know, three or four hours would’ve passed by.”

But Faddis adds that his efforts to teach young jazz musicians are also about carrying on a tradition, one that he sees fading from the modern music world.

“There used to be a stronger mentorship situation happening in jazz, especially during the big band era,” he says. “In the ’30s or ’40s when you would join a band and an older musician would take you under their wing and tell you things like, ‘Stay away from that guy; he’s a drug dealer,’ or ‘Make sure to send some money back home.’ Things that were outside the music but were a big part of growing and developing as a person. I really think it’s important to share with the next generation of kids who want to make a career in jazz and let them know what some of the roadblocks are.”
