Nandan Van Zoo is without a doubt one of the best tourist places in Raipur. Not only is this zoo famous for its immense contribution towards protecting and conserving animals but also for its endless species of fauna. It is their boat rides and jungle safaris which makes this place a big hit among not just kids but adults as well. It is fascinating to watch the animals of many species roam around in the jungle surroundings and to even get a chance to see many animals that are either on the brink of extinction or not so popular. The best thing about his place is that the authorities have kept in mind not just the comfort of the visitors but have also made it extremely affordable. Location: Naya Raipur. Nandanvan Jungle Safari – Asia’s Largest Man-Made Safari

Eco Tourism is one of the biggest trends in travel and tourism today. With more and more species becoming endangered with each passing day, this is an attempt to ensure that they are conserved. It is also one of the most popular ways to increase sensitivity about wildlife conservation among large populations.

The Jungle Safari in Naya Raipur is one of the biggest steps towards Eco Tourism. This manmade safari in the capital city of Chattisgarh is the largest one in Asia.

Launch And Development

Nandanvan Jungle Safari was launched in the year 2001 when Chattisgarh was relatively a young state in India. It was the brain child of several IAS officers. This micro forest was built in the heart of the city after demolishing several buildings, including close to 70 government buildings scheduled to be demolished in the future. For a long time, it was unnoticed but the state government introduced several projects to make it popular not just in India but across the globe.

This effort led to the construction of the largest man-made forest in Asia, The Nandanvan Jungle Safari in Naya Raipur.

The Experience

The entrance of the Safari is straight from a Hollywood movie. You have towering steel gates that have a wooden board that reads, ‘Jungle Safari’. When you enter the gates, you are welcomed by a beautiful garden and a detailed map of the safari. Golf carts are assigned to tourists to take them to various starting points of the Safari.

The entire forest has been divided into 8 zones, with the 7th one allocated for the Safari. The other zones are the Management Zone, the Administrative Zone, The Monument Zone, the Parking Zone, The Waiting Zone, the Water Zone and the Zoo Zone.

You have different safaris that you can choose from including the Lion Safari, The Tiger Safari, the Bear Safari and the Herbivore Safari. Towards the end of each ride, you get to see the crocodile conservation point.

Along with the wildlife itself, you get to experience rich tribal culture. This also includes combats between the tribal people and the wild animals to showcase the relationship between man and beast. These displays show the deep connection that the various tribes have with these animals.

Getting Around

You cannot purchase tickets for the Safari online. One has to purchase them at the door. There are two options for your safari- A/C rides and the non- A/C rides. The A/C rides do not offer the same experience as you have sealed windows that are tinted. You have a regular city bus that you can ride on when you choose the non-AC Safari. You also have the option of a bus that is secured with a steel cage.

The total area of the Nandanvan Zoo is 202.87 HectareThe plan of constructing the largest Man-made Forest has been approved by the Central Zoo Authority of India and is one of the most promising ventures towards wildlife conservation in IndiaThe Nandanvan Zoo and Safari is located adjacent to the Khandwa Dam which is perennial, offering water for all the animals at the zooThe zoo is estimated to have 3000 varieties of flowers when it is complete.

How To Get There?

The Nandanvan Zoo is located conveniently from the major transport zones of Naya Raipur. It is just 35 Kilometers away from the Raipur Railway Station and 30 Kilometers from the Raipur Bus Stand. Nearest airport is “Swami Vivekananda Airport” in Raipur.

As of now, the project is still underway. Although you will only get to see a few lions, tigers, bears and deer as of now, the future is nothing short of magnificent.

Nandanvan Jungle Safari

The Jungle Safari, located at sector-39, Naya Raipur. Naya Raipur is about 35km from Raipur Railway Station and 15km from the Swami Vivekanand Airport, Raipur. The entire 800 Acre area of the Nandanvan Jungle Safari is lush green, with beautiful landscapes. Several indigenous plant species also add up to the vegetation, creating a natural habitat for the animals. It has 130 Acre of water body named ‘Khandwa Reservoir’ which attracts many migratory bird species. Four safaris namely, herbivore, Bear, tiger & Lion Safari has been established. Another 32 species of animal will be exhibited in the upcoming zoo.

In safari area, four safaris have been created so far;

Herbivore Safari – Area 30 ha.

Bear Safari – Area 20 ha.

Tiger Safari – Area 20 ha.

Lion Safari – Area 20 ha.

The whole area of safari is covered by chain link fence of the height of 5 m. and 1.5 m. and inverted at the top at 60 degree. The area is having adequate vegetation, shelter and water bodies. Green belt has been created all along safari and service road and 55000 saplings were planted inside the safari for habitat improvement.

There will be drive through enclosure in which entry and exit will be through a system of double gates and the visitor vehicle will move on the designated road inside the safari at low speed.

These 4 safaris namely Tiger Safari, Herbivore Safari, Lion Safari and Bear Safari are ready in all respects for visitors. At present 4 tigers are kept in Tiger Safari, 106 Herbivore are kept in Herbivore Safari which includes Chital, Sambhar, Blue bull, Barking Deer and Blackbucks. Bear Safari has 4 bears at present.

Jungle Safari of Nandan Van Zoo, Raipur is the largest man-made Jungle Safari in the whole of Asia. It is spread over an area of 800 acres, and it costs around 200 crores to develop. It was inaugurated on 1st November 2016 by our Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

In Jungle Safari Raipur, you will get to see many types of animals and flora, in addition, there is a 130-acre Khandwa reservoir that attracts many migrant birds. It is heartwarming to see greenery all around, and animals are roaming in their natural habitat in Jungle.

At present, wildlife has been kept in 4 safaris and 11 enclosures. Here tourists can easily see Royal Bengal Tiger, White Tiger, Asiatic Lion, Nilgai, Kala Deer, Gharial, and other wildlife.

However, this safari is not fully ready yet. Tourists can book tickets online or offline for Jungle Safari.

AC and non-AC buses are available for tourists. On the buses, you will find guides who will give you information about every details of the safari and animals.

There is a large lake that can be seen during the jungle safari, which adds beauty to the place. You can enjoy boating in the lake.
