Highlighting Themed Experiences

Jurassic World Live Tour: Experience the Adventure in Person

by Spencer Bollettieri, freelance writer for Theme Park Magazine

As Jurassic Park celebrates its 30th anniversary, its biggest prehistoric stars return for an encore as part of the Jurassic World Live Tour. Although the Jurassic World trilogy claimed to “conclude the Jurassic Era,” the action-packed performance proves there are still stories to explore, adventures to embark on, and plenty to celebrate as audiences return to the iconic Isla Nuhlar for a larger-than-life encounter. After three decades, Jurassic World Live Tour isn’t ready to close the gates of its antecedent, but rather, welcome people back in to experience it in person.

Jurassic World Live Tour is more than a show and begins before the audience is seated. In the center of the arena, visitors can freely explore a pre-show exhibit. Vehicles such as the iconic Jurassic World gyrospheres and dinosaurs such as the gargantuan Triceratops are on full display, allowing guests to get a closer look while snapping a few selfies. Meanwhile, younger show-goers and fans of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous can meet baby Bumpy, the cartoon’s breakout star, in the coddling arms of a Jurassic World scientist. From the pre-show alone, people can appreciate just how much detail went into Jurassic World Live Tour’s props and puppetry while making them feel as if they’ve just come face to face with a living dinosaur.

Jurassic World Live Show

After guests are seated, the show begins with an in-universe travelogue explaining the lore of Jurassic World and its wondrous attractions. However, after seeing Isla Nublar as it appeared in the films, guests are transported into the center of a gyrosphere safari where they first meet Jeannie (short for “Genius”) and her handler Dr. Walker. Jeannie is a Troodon and the most intelligent dinosaur cloned by Jurassic World scientists. Through a “dino decoder,” Dr. Walker and her team can map out Jeannie’s emotions. Although, after being separated from Jeannie by the Indominous Rex, Dr. Walker, her colleague Dr. Riely, interns Allison and Chad, along with ACU agent Oscar find themselves in the middle of a dino-sized conspiracy as they return to Isla Nublar.

Jurassic World Live Tour is a predominantly family-friendly adventure that utilizes life-sized puppets, pyrotechnics, and stunt work. While many will enjoy the heartfelt story and characters, fans of the series will appreciate how it expands the Jurassic World mythos. Additionally, expect to see many fan favorites such as Blue, Bumpy, Rexy, and the Indominous Rex. Without being overly violent or too scary, Jurassic World Live Tour is an experience made with everyone in mind and spectacle at the heart of it. It’s a way to bring the best of Jurassic World to cities in a condensed, fun, and emotional performance.

Jurassic World Live Merchandise

As expected, merchandise is available for purchase throughout Jurassic World Live Tour. In addition to the usual t-shirts, plushies, and novelty snack containers, highlights include dino decoder replicas, novelty glasses reminiscent of Jurassic Park’s night vision goggles, and a Jurassic World-branded Dino Disc, a boomerang-like toy. Additionally, souvenir photographs are sold as keepsakes to commemorate the event.

About Jurassic World Live Tour

The unforgettable Jurassic World score and immersive projection and scenery transport you to the jungles of Isla Nublar. Watch as “real” Gyrospheres roll through the valley as scientists fight to save a new dinosaur. The show includes stunts, sets, props, and an original storyline that fits within the Jurassic World universe.

A collaboration between Feld Entertainment and Universal Live Entertainment, the Jurassic World Live Tour continues an extensive portfolio of projects that include Marvel Universe Live!, A Minion’s Perspective, and Jurassic World: The Exhibition. With Winter performances at the Barclays Center, Prudential Center, Total Mortgage Arena, and UBS Arena, Jurassic World Live is part of a 2023 North American tour, hitting more than two dozen cities. For further information, the Jurassic World Live website has a schedule of upcoming locations for those ready to embark on their Jurassic journey.

We went to opening night of 'Jurassic World Live' at Resch Center. Here's what it's like

A SHWAUBENON - How seriously do kiddos take their dinos? You need only to take a look around at the “Jurassic World Live Tour” at the Resch Center.

On Thursday’s opening night of the family-friendly touring production, the dinosaur crowd showed up in their T-shirts (“T Is For T-Rex”) and toting their favorite toy dinosaurs from home. At least one child got some extra mileage out of his dinosaur costume ahead of Halloween.

The majority of kids looked to be ages 5 to 12 — the kind of fans who know their way around a Dino Decoder and Gyrosphere. Once the lights went down and the roars went up, they sat wide-eyed and barely moved.

The tour continues with multiple performances daily through Saturday, so if you’re thinking about making tracks to the Resch Center this weekend, here’s a few things to know.

What is the show like?

It's set between the first "Jurassic World" film in 2015 and 2018's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom." Through some pretty nifty projections, lighting, video and set pieces, audiences get transported to the jungles of Isla Nublar, where an Indominus Rex escapes and causes chaos in the park. Then it's off to the deserts of Chile as a team of scientists, led by Dr. Kate Walker, try to unravel a corrupt plan and save the star of the show, a smart Troodon dinosaur named Jeannie, and her eggs.

There are fight sequences, stunts, animatronic and performer-operated dinosaurs, flame throwers, a whole fleet of vehicles that zip around on the stage and surprises that drop from the ceiling and disappear into the ceiling. There's plenty to keep kids' attention. Adults can appreciate the snippets of John Williams' gorgeous main theme from "Jurassic Park" and a magical moonlit night scene with glowing dinosaurs.

Is it scary?

Every child is different, but as a family show, it’s not intended to be frightening. Will it make you jump a couple of times, child or not, when sparks suddenly fly or there’s an explosion? You bet, but the dinosaurs themselves aren’t scary — except for that Indominus Rex that’s on the loose. Its roar is ferocious and had some kids snuggling up to their parents or covering their ears.

When there are multiple dinosaurs onstage, choreographed fight scenes among the human characters, lab alarms blaring and a couple of motorcycles racing around in between the action, it can get a little intense. But there’s also a touch of romance and a happy ending, neither of which will be spoiled here.

More: A pint-sized Packers dog named Vinnie James draws a crowd wherever he goes outside Lambeau on game days

How long does the show last?

It's two 35-minute halves with a 20-minute intermission for snacks and potty breaks.

Is there merchandise?

You’re kidding, right? It’s a Feld Entertainment production (the same people behind Disney on Ice), so rest assured, there’s a merchandise booth every few feet and none of it cheap. Snow cones in a variety of plastic souvenir cups ranged from $16 to $20, realistic plush dinosaurs were $35 to $45, and light-up wands ran $30 to $35. There’s also dog tags, binoculars, goggles, caps, T-shirts and, what appeared to be a favorite with dads, a dino head you can wear on your head like a cap.

Be sure you arrive early to meet Bumpy the baby dino.

Every ticket comes with a free preshow experience on the arena floor where families can get an up-close look at (but not touch) a couple of the dinosaurs and vehicles in the show. It was a popular spot for photos on opening night, especially the chance to pose with a character from the show as she held Bumpy the baby dinosaur.

The preshow experience begins an hour before the performance and runs for about 40 minutes. If you want to meet Bumpy, allow plenty of time, as that line closes earlier to allow everyone time to get through it before the preshow wraps up. On Thursday night, the line cut-off was at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show.

More: NEW Zoo's 'bestest kitty floof,' Rajan the snow leopard, has died

Be sure you stick around after to eat your veggies.

How better to offset that big cloud of cotton candy than with some broccoli. Green Giant is handing out samples after shows of its new Dino Veggie Tots. The dinosaur-shaped variations on tater tots come in broccoli and cheese or sweet potato and cauliflower and have fun names like Broccliosaurus.

When are the shows this weekend and how much are tickets?

Performances are at 3 and 7 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m., 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $18 to $53, plus fees, at  ticketstaronline.com , 800-895-0071 or the Resch Center box office. Ages 2 and older require a ticket. With such a large-scale production, any seat gives you a good view of the action.

What's next? Mark your calendar for Disney on Ice.

“Mickey’s Search Party” will play the Resch Center Feb. 7-11, which means it’ll be time to spring for light-up Minnie Mouse ears or an Elsa figurine before you know it.  Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 through Ticket Star, with a presale beginning Nov. 7. Tickets start at $28.

I Think You Should Leave

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains minor spoilers of Tim Robinson ‘s “ I Think You Should Leave ” live show, including general descriptions of unaired sketches .

“I Think You Should Leave” went live Tuesday, April 2, when creators Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin brought their beloved Netflix sketch comedy series to the stage at New York’s Beacon Theatre.

Nearly 3,000 fans showed up for the mysterious, sold-out show, many of them revealing their allegiance to the comedy cult with Dan Flashes button-downs and Corncob TV tees — if you know, you know — and yelling out lines from “I Think You Should Leave” that have been immortalized in gifs and memes.

Brooks Wheelan, who overlapped with Robinson and Kanin during their time on “Saturday Night Live,” opened the show with five minutes of stand-up before a giant screen began playing an extended version of “Has This Ever Happened to You?,” a sketch from the first episode of “I Think You Should Leave,” in which Robinson plays a low-tier attorney advertising to people who have been bizarrely wronged by a pair of exterminators.

Then, to much fanfare, Robinson and Kanin took the stage, which was designed like a living room, and explained the format of the night. They would bring out special guests to watch sketches that were scrapped from the series and determine whether they should have made the cut. Spoiler alert: every sketch was met with a baffled, unanimous: “Why didn’t you put that in?” Oh, and there was also a bird mascot named Tori, who would prance onstage and harass them every half hour.

It’s a classic “I Think You Should Leave” sketch reminiscent of “Job Interview,” in which Robinson goes to great lengths to prove a push door actually goes both ways. The audience went wild for “Done Deal,” and Richardson’s verdict was: “It should have been in the program.”

The next guest was Seth Meyers, who jokingly assured Robinson and Kanin that he fought hard for their ideas as head writer of “SNL” before ribbing them about a “Jurassic Park” sketch they pitched, which “would have been great for 1993.” Then they screened the next unaired sketch, which was ironically not the only one of the night that involved dinosaurs. “Dino Talk” is honestly hard to explain, but it involves a strange man attending a lecture while playing mind games with the random people seated next to him, played by Kanin and “The Bear” star Lionel Boyce.

Meyers said of the sketch, “There’s a lot I like,” and pointed out that the reason they probably didn’t include it in the show is because, like “Focus Group,” it includes a guy with an unplaceable accent messing with Kanin. Robinson said they initially offered the main part to Sir Patrick Stewart, but he didn’t understand the concept and passed. “He’s dead to me,” joked Robinson.

Patti Harrison, another recurring favorite on “I Think You Should Leave,” came out next to discuss “Movie Set,” in which Robinson and Richardson play bickering background extras on the set of a horror movie. Robinson’s job is to deliver a burger to Richardson, who makes a bold creative choice to do a “stinky” gesture when handed the food in each take. This, obviously, really upsets Robinson, and the pair begin arguing through their teeth.

Robinson’s rationale for not putting “Movie Set” in the series was that it’s “too hard to understand,” to which Meyers laughed: “You have literally the most challenging sketch show ever made. Your audience will follow you anywhere.”

The next guest was Bruce Buckles, whom Robinson introduced as a random improv student in New York trying to break into the business. He said he is the founder of a new improv company called Buckle Up Comedy, which doesn’t yet have a physical space. As the night went on, Buckles fawned over the onstage talent and backhandedly praised Meyers as one of the “Top 3 Weekend Update hosts.”

His addition seemed appropriately bizarre, dosing the audience with a fair amount of uncomfortable laughter. But it turns out — and I’m sorry to shatter the illusion — that Buckles is just a character played by comedic actor-writer Brendan Jennings. I know this because his performance was so believable that after the show I had to research whether Buckles was real.

Of the remaining unaired sketches, there was “Event Space Walkthrough,” in which Robinson must fake a phone call but has no idea how to; “Dino Guy,” which casts Robinson as a paleo-enthusiast who goes to war against a little kid playing with toy dinosaurs; and “Barney’s,” which stars Biff Wiff as a disgruntled diner owner who, in order to drum up business, renames menu items to stuff like “Big Bra Water” and “Eyes Roll Back in My Head Blowjob Burger.” (Robinson said that last one didn’t make the cut because “the jokes seemed too obvious.” The audience disagreed.)

Guest after guest praised each sketch, and Robinson and Kanin hilariously failed to come up with a single good reason why they were cut from the show. As laughter roared from the balconies, you could almost sense a slight tinge of regret on the co-creators’ faces.

Still, exhibiting unseen sketches in front of an audience with celebrities providing live commentary — rather than, say, throwing them up on YouTube — is pretty genius. By letting us peek into the “I Think You Should Leave” vault, Robinson and Kanin deepen the show’s lore, building the comedy equivalent of B-sides and rarities. It won’t be long before die-hard fans declare their favorite sketch as the extended cut of “Has This Ever Happened to You?” — or the second unreleased one about dinosaurs. And it’s only a matter of time before bootleg iPhone videos of the sketches trickle onto Reddit and Twitter, and the jokes rot fans’ vocabularies.

Before the night ended, Robinson and Kanin screened an extended version of “He Layeth on High,” starring the late Fred Willard as a funeral organist, plus a clip from an unreleased sketch about a dance competition show that eliminates contestants who check their pockets to make sure their wallets haven’t fallen out. Wrapping up with the help of comedian and musician Whitmer Thomas, Robinson led the Beacon in a karaoke singalong to the fan-favorite power ballad “Friday Night.”

It’s curious that “I Think You Should Leave” has yet to be renewed for a fourth season by Netflix. Given the show’s low budget and treasure trove of unreleased material, Ted Sarandos should be begging Robinson and Kanin for more episodes — and maybe he is! But the day of the live show, it was announced that the comedy duo landed an HBO pilot order for their series “The Chair Company,” about a man who finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy at work, and a couple of years ago they sold another pilot to the network called “Computer School.”

Robinson and Kanin are busy, and they may or may not choose to return to the world of “I Think You Should Leave.” But if the live tour proves anything, it’s that there are legions of fans clamoring for more sketches, and that even the leftovers knock it out of the park.
