It was tough - tougher than anything I’d been faced with before and required every inch of my energy, stamina and stubbornness... What got me through was the knowledge of what we were raising money for, the children who sang for us in their classroom built by Tusk and the communities that will benefit from a new reservoir. This is what the Safari Marathon is about. Pippa Middleton - Full Marathon competitor 2015

Ditch the Desk & Run Wild in Kenya’s Most Spectacular Wildlife Conservancy

Now in its 24 th year, the Lewa Safari Marathon is one of the world’s most breath-taking races, notorious for its challenging yet captivating terrain and incredible wildlife experiences. Voted as one of the top ten races to run in your life by Runner’s World, the Marathon is an event on countless bucket lists.

Life on earth continues to face unprecedented threats, and as we increasingly retreat into lives lived online, the Lewa Safari Marathon is an opportunity to make a change. Break free, run wild, breathe nature and make a positive impact on the wildlife and communities of northern Kenya and beyond. This year participants are encouraged to ‘Ditch the Desk’ and connect with nature instead as they follow a route across savannah plains, along river banks and through acacia woodland.

kenya safari marathon

The annual event has hosted runners of all abilities for almost two and a half decades, from elite professionals like Marathon World Record Holder Eliud Kipchoge, to amateur runners and walkers alike.

The World’s fastest marathon runner and Lewa Ambassador, Eliud Kipchoge said; “To me, a running world is a happy world. We are all part of the human family and we must keep strong and stay fit for our wellbeing. By running together, we can also conserve our environment, empower our communities, take care of our wildlife and support those at Lewa working for a future for us all”

Headline sponsored by telecommunication giants Safaricom and Huawei, the Marathon continues to be a force for good.

“We are proud to be part of this noble cause as we run to create awareness and take action to conserve our wildlife. We have been part of Lewa Safari Marathon’s journey of success since its inception in 2000. Today, we are proud to extend our partnership as we sponsor the event for KES 10 million. The event means a lot to us as a company because we aim to support the growth and development of sports talents, while conserving the country’s environment and wildlife.” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom.

Sheng Kaifu, Deputy CEO, Huawei shared, “Huawei is delighted to have supported the Lewa Safari Marathon for the past 16 years. The conservancy is home to some of the rarest wildlife and we know through our support and that of Safaricom, a difference has been made in preserving these iconic species for future generations as well as the surrounding communities”

The Lewa Safari Marathon is not just a personal challenge. This unique event has supported conservation projects across Kenya for over 20 years. By taking part, every single participant plays a huge role in helping local communities and raising awareness of the threats facing Africa’s incredible biodiversity.

Reflecting on the event, Mike Watson, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy CEO said, “ As we face unprecedented threats to our planet, it is essential that we take action to protect our wildlife and their habitats. The Lewa Safari Marathon is not only an opportunity to challenge yourself and connect with nature, but it is also a way to make a positive impact on the communities and wildlife of northern Kenya and beyond. I encourage everyone take advantage of this unique opportunity to disconnect from our screens and connect with nature on June 24th, in Kenya’s most spectacular wildlife conservancy.”  Mike Watson, CEO Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

Since its inception in 2000 the race has raised over $8 million dollars in support of conservation and community initiatives throughout Kenya. Nearly $4 million dollars have been invested in the direct protection of endangered species, other wildlife and their habitats.

The marathon will take place at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy on 24 th June. Registrations open online at lewasafarimarathon.co.ke at 8.30 am on Wednesday 15 th March. Please contact [email protected] for any queries on the race.

The Kenya Wildlife Marathon and Half-Marathon will take place on the 3nd of June, 2023. Kenya depicts an absolutely perfect location for this marathon tradition. Join us and combine the majesty of the ancient race with the beauty of Kenya's natural resources. We offer an all-inclusive package that includes the race, accommodation, meals, transportation, sightseeing and game drives. The itinerary starts on the 1st of June and ends on the 8th of June.

The race course is a trail Run course but with different distances 5K, 10K, half-marathon and full marathon.  Join us and combine the majesty of the ancient race with the beauty of Kenya's natural resources. Encompassing hundreds of acres of grasslands, rocky hills and river-beds, the Lukenya Sanctuary is just that, a slice of natural paradise. Teeming with Zebras, Wildebeests, Giraffes and more, humans remain the distinct minority at this veritably unspoiled reserve. Match this with the reliably beautiful weather Kenya enjoys in lying by the equator, and it becomes quite clear why we chose Lukenya Hills as the setting for our Safari Marathon. Join us as we launch a thrilling new Marathon tradition, combining the majesty of the ancient race with the beauty of Kenya's natural treasures.

Course details

The 42 km course runs across diverse habitats and undulating landscape, crisscrossing through open plain grasslands and forest edge ascending to elevated rock outcrops and descending to woodland. Generally, the route consists of over 5km of single-tracks, and 15km of jeep tracks and 10km murram roads. The toughest section is from 12-15km, which is largely climbing. for most competitors, this run would feel like completing a full marathon on road. So, you cannot afford to be under-prepared. In a nut-shell, there are a few kilometers with loose rock surfaces, few kilometers of very narrow and uneven paths, hundreds of wildebeests/giraffes/zebras, a few hyenas, creek beds to cross, 3 tough climbs to conquer and wet-feet from creek crossing. The sanctuary holds incredible views from the hill tops.

Run Wild: Lewa Safari Marathon

Led by Far & Wild founder Ben Morison, this trip pairs an incredible safari experience through Kenya's majestic Lewa Conservancy with the challenge of running the iconic Lewa Safari Marathon.

The Lewa Safari Marathon is an annual race held in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a protected area in northern Kenya renowned for its population of endangered black rhinos. Taking place along the dirt tracks and trails within the conservancy, the marathon winds its way past grazing zebra, giraffe, and antelope herds. Unlike regular city marathons, runners here have to occasionally dodge elephants or lions crossing the route! The event started in 2000 as a fundraiser to support Lewa's conservation efforts and community development projects in the region. Today it attracts over 1,000 local and international runners seeking a uniquely wildlife-filled African running experience while also raising funds for this important cause. The race has helped generate millions of dollars to protect Lewa's wildlife and ecosystems over the past two decades.

Defending champions Eliud Kipchoge and Peres Jepchirchir shortlisted in Kenya’s marathon team for Paris 2024 Olympics

Defending champions Eliud Kipchoge and Peres Jepchirchir shortlisted in Kenya’s marathon team for Paris Olympics

There were no major surprises as Athletics Kenya trimmed its marathon squads for the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday, 4 April, with Tokyo Olympic gold medallists Eliud Kipchoge and Peres Jepchirchir retained.

The highly-anticipated moment saw five men and six women named on the shortlists, with the African nation allowed to enter a maximum of three runners in each of the Olympic races.

Two-time defending champion Kipchoge headlines the men’s list, following the death of world record holder Kelvin Kiptum. The two men had been expected to challenge for the gold medal in the race on 10 August 2024. Kiptum died in a road accident aged 24 in February , five months after lowering the world record to 2:00:35 record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon .

  • Olympics Athletics Schedule | Paris 2024
  • Eliud Kipchoge: Training Methods of the double Olympic marathon champion

Surprise addition to Kenyan men's squad

Former world record holder Kipchoge is joined in a men's shortlist that also includes Benson Kipruto , Timothy Kiplagat, Vincent Ngetich, and Alexander Munyao.

Four of the runners were in the provisional long list of 10 men named last December by Athletics Kenya, who then based their selection on the 2023 world marathon rankings, and performances at the six World Marathon Majors.

The surprise inclusion in the latest list is Munyao, who was not in that squad. He won the Prague Marathon last year before rounding off his season with a second place in Valencia.

Kipchoge, who will be targeting an unprecedented third consecutive title in Paris, tops the team as the fastest marathoner alive. Kipruto, who was second behind the late Kiptum in Chicago, is the fifth fastest of all-time.

Kiplagat is the runner-up from the 2024 Tokyo Marathon, while Ngetich was second in Berlin last year, behind double Olympic marathon champion Kipchoge.

Kenyan women's shortlist stacked with winners

Besides defending champion Jepchirchir, who finished third in the 2023 London Marathon, the women's shortlist comprises the reigning Boston and New York Marathon champion Hellen Obiri and two-time Chicago Marathon winner Ruth Chepngetich, who was second in the American race last year, and is a tested championship runner having won the world title on the road in 2019.

Others in team are Brigid Kosgei , the former world marathon record holder, who took silver at the Tokyo Olympics, Sharon Lokedi, the New York Marathon winner in 2022, and Rosemary Wanjiru, the 2023 Tokyo Marathon champion, who was second in this year's race over the 42.2km distance.

The women's Olympic race will take place on 11 August, the day after the men's marathon.

Team Kenya is expected to announce later in April the three male and three female athletes selected to start the Olympic races, and which runners will be nominated as reserves.

As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.

Kenya proposes regional maritime treaty to end Ethiopia-Somalia dispute

Kenya has made a proposal to diffuse tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia over an Ethiopian deal with Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland that would give it port access and enable it to set up a naval base, a top Kenyan official told Reuters.

The proposal involves the negotiation of a regional maritime resources treaty that will govern how states in the region can access ports on commercial terms, said Korir Sing'oei, the head of Kenya's state department for foreign affairs.
