The Columbian Park Zoo has been a popular family attraction close to downtown for more than 100 years. Throughout all that time, the zoo has received many additions and renovations that add to the rich experience you'll find at the park today.

A lively college town in Northwest Indiana , Lafayette has a population that swells during the semester thanks to Purdue University.

The city was founded in 1825 and quickly prospered as a river town, with more than a dozen boats docking each day and spawning a bustling commercial area on the riverfront.

Much of the architecture constructed at that time is still standing, lending Lafayette’s three downtown areas a lot of character, heightened by their unique stores, restaurants and sense of fun.

You can uncover all sorts of local stories around Lafayette, going back 300 years to the days of French fur trappers, which is celebrated with the popular Feast of the Hunters’ Moon every October.

1. Downtown Lafayette

At the heart of the Lafayette-West Lafayette metro area is a cross-river downtown area, linked by a pedestrian bridge and made up of three distinct and equally intriguing areas.

West to east, these are Chauncey Village by the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, the Wabash Riverfront and then Arts & Market further along Main Street.

All are enlivened by the presence of the Purdue campus close by, and all abound with a diversity of independent stores, dynamic nightlife, culture and dining options for all tastes.

Over 2,000 acres, Prophetstown is on the site of a large, multi-tribal Native American village founded at the start of the 19th century by fabled Shawnee brothers Tecumseh (1768-1813) and Tenskwatawa (1775-1836).

On a visit you can view replicas of Shawnee structures at the Woodland Indian Settlement, while there’s also a historic farmstead painting a picture of rural life here in the 1920s.

An outdoor aquatic center opened in the park in 2013, and has a beach entry wading area, tube slide, lazy river and splash zones.

There are trails for hiking and biking, as well as picnic sites, a campground with 110 camping sites and a visitor center with live animal exhibits and interactive displays about the park’s ecosystems.

6. SAMARA (John E. Christian House)

There’s a house by Frank Lloyd Wright on the northern Edge of the Purdue campus in West Lafayette.

Epitomizing Wright’s Usonian vision, SAMARA was built in the mid-1950s for the Purdue professor Dr. John Christian and his wife Catherine, as a family home and place to entertain staff and students. The living room is especially large, and can comfortably hold 50 people.

The name SAMARA comes from the winged seed, which Wright spotted on the property when he first visited, and appears repeatedly as a motif.

The Christian family maintains the house to the architect’s precise specifications, which, as always with Wright, extended to furniture, landscaping and even fabrics. Detailed guided tours of SAMARA take place April through November and last for around 90 minutes.

7. Wolf Park

Just north of Prophetstown State Park is a research and conservation facility founded in 1972 to study the behavior of wolves and other canids, and help researchers in the wild.

May through November, Wolf Park is open to the public by appointment, and on a guided tour you may pick up facts about this misunderstood animal that may come as a surprise.

You have a menu of tours to choose from, and the basic Follow the Pack tour entails a 45-minute walk with a trained education docent, finding out about the facility research work and admiring grey wolves, grey foxes, red foxes and bison.

There’s a Howl Night experience, after sunset when the wolves are a lot more animated, and you can howl along with the park’s noisy residents. Check the website for upcoming seasonal activities like a Turkey Toss at Thanksgiving and Holiday Party just before Christmas.

8. Art Museum of Greater Lafayette

Southeast of downtown Lafayette is another important art museum, this one with a history going back to 1909. Over the last 110+ years the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette has built up a collection of more than 1,500 works.

Some of the earliest acquisitions, often purchased directly from the artist, includes pieces by Henry Ossawa Tanner, Clifton Wheeler and F. Luis Mora.

The museum moved into its current building in 1960, with new wings added in 1980 and 1988. There are usually ten shows a year, with compelling solo and collective exhibits for prominent local and regional artists, as well as selections from the permanent collection.

The museum also runs a lot of educational programs, from classes to yoga and live model open studios.

9. Fort Ouiatenon

The first fortified settlement in what has become Indiana was founded in 1717 a short way west along the Wabash River from today’s Lafayette.

A French trading post, Fort Ouiatenon was a log blockhouse surrounded by a wooden palisade, established to counter the British expansion along the Ohio and Wabash valleys.

At its economic peak in the mid-18th century, this site was home to as many 3,000 people, passing into British hands in 1761 and Native Americans in 1763, before being razed by American troops in 1791.

A replica blockhouse was raised a mile downriver from the original fort in 1930. This is open on weekends, May through August, and in fall is the site of the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon festival, which we’ll talk about later in this list.

Fall is a lovely time to be in the Lafayette area, and one of the best places to visit for foliage nearby is this park on the steep hillside over Wildcat Creek, just northeast of Lafayette.

The Clegg Memorial Garden goes back to a country retreat, founded by Harold and Ruth Clegg in the late 1930s, and is now composed of restored native habitats.

With sharp elevation changes and several overlooks, the land is made up of gravel hill prairie, oak woodland, savanna and riparian habitats.

There’s more than a mile of trail, to take in splendid wildflowers in summer and those wonderful colors in fall. The old Clegg Cottage now houses the administrative offices for the Niche Land Trust, which manages the property.

11. Exploration Acres

Mid-September through October you can make the short trip southeast of Lafayette to discover Northwest Indiana’s largest corn maze and pumpkin patch.

Covering more than 550 acres, the farm here goes back more than a century, and in the 1990s switched from livestock to arable farming.

Exploration Acres was born in the mid-00s as a way of preserving and restoring the historic farm buildings, welcoming the public in fall and renting out the barn for events and weddings throughout the summer.

For those fun-packed few weeks in September and October you’ve got a 22-acre corn maze, 38 varieties in the pumpkin patch, hayrides, a tractor train and all sorts of other attractions and activities for little ones.

Food is always part of the experience, with kettle corn and shaved ice, as well as fall favorites (apple cider, pumpkin roll slices) at the country store.

12. Wea Creek Orchard

Also minutes out of Lafayette is another historic farm that opens its doors to the public in the summer and fall.

A registered archaeological site, Wea Creek Orchards is owned by three families all descending from the pioneers who purchased this land in 1855.

From late July to early November you can come to soak up the history of this place and purchase delicious produce as it comes into season.

The farm grows nectarines, peaches, apples and pumpkins from a wealth of varieties, and sells its own honey and homemade fruit products like jellies and pumpkin, peach and apple butter at the store.

You’re also free to take a look around; wandering through the orchard and along Wea Creek and visiting a beaver dam.

13. Wildcat Creek Winery

At a cute spot by the namesake watercourse you’ll find Lafayette’s oldest and only winery, opened by the couple, Rock and Kathy Black in 2008.

Sourcing high-quality grapes from regional growers, Wildcat Creek Winery produces a wide selection of award-winning wines.

Among them are varieties like Chambourcin, Traminette, Riesling, Cayuga, Steuben, Niagara, Catawba and Concord, as well as fruit wines from blueberry, cherry and cranberry.

The location is a delight, with an idyllic garden. You can bring your own chairs and blankets and pair your wine with a picnic, the ingredients (pickles, cheeses, jams), sourced from local farms and producers.

14. Lafayette Farmers’ Market

One of the oldest outdoor markets in Indiana, the Lafayette Farmers’ Market has existed in some form for more than 180 years.

This is a Saturday morning staple, taking over two blocks on 5th Street from Columbia Street north to Ferry Street, May through October.

This is a great chance to support local producers and makers, and there are more than 30 regular vendors.

On a normal week you’ll find seasonal fruit and vegetables, herbs, coffee, tea, plants, breads, pastries, cheeses, honey, syrups, international specialty ingredients, pet treats, soaps and beauty products.

There’s always prepared food like pizza, BBQ, jerk chicken, quiche and sandwiches, as well as music from talented local artists.

15. Feast of the Hunters’ Moon

For more than 50 years, the Tippecanoe County Historical Association, which maintains Fort Ouiatenon, has put on a historical reenactment and festival at the site over a weekend in October.

Always well-attended, the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon celebrates an annual fall gathering of Native Americans and French troops, which took place here in the mid-18th century.

More than 8,000 people take part, dressed as settlers, soldiers and Native Americans. You can enjoy a host of living history presentations, shining a light on customs, culture and military life at that time.

As well as reenactments, the festival stages plenty of music performances, and vendors sell contemporaneous food like venison sausage, voyageur stew and rabbit stew.

A vibrant college town, Lafayette is located in the northwest of Indiana, just across the rushing Wabash River from its sister city West Lafayette. The government seat of Tippecanoe County, it has a rich history and culture with much of life in town dominated by the prestigious Purdue University.

Named after the French general Marquis de Lafayette, an American Revolutionary War hero, it was founded in 1825 at a spot where the river became impassable upstream. Star City soon flourished as a shipping center and railroad hub with several architectural styles and attractive old buildings still being on display in its historic downtown.

12. Celery Bog Nature Area

Formerly a vegetable farm, until a ferocious fire burned its planting beds one summer, the vast area now protects a pristine wetland ecosystem. As you wander along its seven miles of paved paths and boardwalks, you’ll enjoy lovely views over its murky waters and woodlands.

In total, more than 120 different species inhabit Celery Bog with beavers and foxes sometimes spied alongside deer, coyotes and turtles. Besides being very popular with birdwatchers, the preserve also has an excellent nature center containing educational exhibits and activities on local fauna and flora.

11. Wabash Heritage Trail

Another wonderful way to see more of the city and its scenic surroundings is to walk, run or cycle along the Wabash Heritage Trail. Winding its way alongside the pretty river of the same name, it has countless parks, nature spots and tourist attractions for you to stop off at along the way.

Stretching roughly thirteen miles in length, it takes you from the Tippecanoe Battlefield Park to Fort Ouiatenon. The rambling route passes through both Lafayette and West Lafayette with Happy Hollow Park and the Davis Ferry Bridge counting among its main attractions.

As much of the path is lined by towering trees, joggers and cyclists enjoy some much-needed shade in summer with picnic areas and viewpoints also dotted about. Other than visiting the battlefield and fort, you can always grab a bite to eat at the handful of cafes and restaurants bordering the trail.

10. Art Museum of Greater Lafayette

Home to lots of fantastic paintings, photos and sculptures, the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette lies just a stone’s throw from downtown. As well as displaying arresting artworks by local and national artists, it puts on loads of lectures, classes and concerts over the course of the year.

Established in 1909 to encourage an interest and appreciation for art in the area, its more than 1,500 artifacts and installations now occupy a purpose-built museum just southeast of the center. While it mostly focuses on 19th, 20th and 21st century American art from Indiana and the surrounding states , amazing Inuit carvings and intriguing works by Mexican artists also feature.

After strolling about its light and airy galleries and taking in all its striking landscapes and portraits, you can pass by the gift shop and pick up some delightful handmade souvenirs.

9. Clegg Botanic Gardens

Yet another picture-perfect spot for you to hit up is the beautiful Clegg Botanic Gardens right on the northeastern limits of Lafayette. Overlooking Wildcat Creek, it has eight attractive little nature trails for visitors to hike along amidst its verdant woods, savannahs and prairies.

Originally the private country retreat of the Clegg family, the serene hillside gardens were opened to the public in 1965 in memory of their only son Jerry who had sadly died a few years earlier. Despite its smallish size, the park includes a number of landscapes with steep ravines and the swirling creek lying next to enormous old oaks and wildflower-filled meadows.

As such, the gorgeous gardens are a very pleasant place to spend some time in quiet reflection with stunning scenery and views on show wherever you look.

8. Purdue University

Regularly ranked among the best public universities in the country, Purdue University exerts a huge influence on both the city’s economy and its cultural life. Set just across the river in West Lafayette, its colossal campus has lots of impressive historic buildings and immaculate green spaces for you to explore.

Since being founded in 1869, it has expanded considerably with dozens of colleges, residence halls and athletics fields now dotting the leafy campus. In addition to a couple of excellent art galleries, it has the exquisite Art Deco Elliott Hall of Music and the lofty Purdue Bell Tower for guests to stop by.

Aside from seeing the iconic Purdue University Arch and checking out the Purdue Memorial Union, it is well worth watching the Boilermaker football team play if you have the chance. On game days, thousands of students create a massive buzz around town with the games themselves being exciting, action-packed affairs.

7. Downtown Lafayette

The heart and soul of life in the city, Lafayette’s lively yet laidback downtown is home to most of its best bars, restaurants and shops. Very pedestrian-friendly, the handsome historic district lies right by the Wasbah River with fun cultural events and community festivals taking place here all the time.

What started out in 1825 as a transportation hub for the west-center of the state has since steadily grown into the thriving downtown of the sizeable city. All its diverse architecture reflects the area’s storied past as fine Victorian-era buildings and early twentieth-century houses line its streets. Many of these are now home to cozy cafes, unique boutiques and packed-out college bars.

Among its main highlights are the Tippecanoe County Courthouse which exhibits some outstanding neoclassical architecture and the Long Center for the Performing Arts; an atmospheric Vaudeville theater from the twenties.

6. Samara House

Just to the north of the university’s expansive campus is one of the city’s most interesting buildings: the sleek and stylish Samara House . Designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, its elegant interior is a treat to tour with delightful design features and furniture on show throughout.

An excellent example of his Usonian architectural vision, the charming house was built in 1954 for Purdue professor John Christian and his wife Catherine. Named for all the distinctive winged seeds that can be spotted on the property, the single-story structure, its wide windows and patios blend in perfectly with the lush grounds all around them.

On the tour, your expert guide will point out some of the forty innovations designed by the architect and tell you all about the family, their lives and interactions with Wright.

5. Wildcat Creek Winery

After all the sightseeing and outdoor activities, what better way to relax than with a refreshing glass of wine in hand. At the award-winning Wildcat Creek Winery, guests can sample sumptuous wines either in their tasting room or out on the terrace overlooking its gorgeous green gardens.

Founded by Rick and Kathy Black in 2008, the family-run winery occupies an antique old Hoosier farmhouse, just up the road from the Clegg Botanic Gardens. Named after the lovely little creek that winds its way nearby, it now has over a dozen handcrafted wines for you to try at its peaceful site.

As you try their tasty whites, reds and roses, a knowledgeable staff member will teach you about the wine-making process and what each one is best paired with. Afterwards, you can buy a bottle or two to take home from the gift shop which also sells locally-produced chocolates, cheeses and jams.

4. Columbian Park Zoo

A firm favorite with families, Columbian Park Zoo is home to nearly two hundred mammals, birds and reptiles from every corner of the globe. Situated just a short walk or drive to the southeast of downtown, it also has a small petting zoo and exciting animal encounters for you to enjoy.

Established in 1908, its spacious enclosures and exhibits now house over 190 creatures both big and small of more than ninety different species. While ambling around, you can therefore see everything from playful otters and prairie dogs to cute owls, waddling penguins and giant Galapagos tortoises.

After seeing all the animals and exploring its magical butterfly garden, visitors can always make use of the adjacent park’s playgrounds, picnic areas and walking trails.

3. Wolf Park

Another wonderful place to head if you want to see some amazing animals up close and personal is Wolf Park in the nearby town of Battle Ground. At the top-class conservation center, guests can see not just packs of grey wolves but foxes and bison too, roaming about its pristine prairies.

In 1972, Dr Erich Klinghammer, a professor of animal behavior at Purdue University, founded the facility to study wolves and help researchers protect them in the wild. Fifty years later, the wildlife preserve is still going strong as a small pack of six wolves, four red and grey foxes and a herd of big bison currently inhabit its scenic site.

On educational tours, you’ll learn about the majestic creatures, their natural habitat and behaviors while watching them play, eat and sleep in the enclosures before you.

2. Haan Museum of Indiana Art

A must-visit for its fine collection of ceramics and decorative arts, the magnificent Haan Museum of Indiana Art is located just a short stroll south of the center. While its antique furniture, paintings and sculptures certainly make for a striking sight, the grand Colonial Revival mansion in which they are housed is just as impressive.

Built in 1904 for the St. Louis World’s Fair, it was later moved brick by brick to Lafayette, only opening to the public as an art museum in 2013. Once past its enormous Ionic columns, guests can enjoy the world’s largest collection of Indiana art on show in the mansion’s tastefully-decorated halls and rooms.

Highlights include incredible impressionist paintings by the Hoosier Group and all the fabulous old furniture and furnishings that adorn its two floors. After marveling at all its eccentric ceramics and monumental vases, make sure to wander about its superb sculpture garden before heading off.

1. Prophetstown State Park

As it offers up the perfect mix of history, nature and outdoor activities, Prophetstown State Park is a great place to visit for all the family. Sprawled across a huge area to the north of the city, it has lots of hiking and biking trails to explore with campsites and picnic areas scattered here and there.

Lying alongside the Wabash River, the state park commemorates a Native American village founded in the area in 1808. At the site’s open-air museum, visitors can amble around a replica of a Shawnee village and a 1920s farmstead which highlights how people used to live and farm in the past.

In summer, you can also cool off at its aquatic center which features a fun thirty-foot tube slide and a relaxing lazy river area. With picturesque woods, prairies and wetlands to hike and bike around, the newest state park in Indiana makes a lovely place to visit and vacation.

Why You Should Visit Lafayette Indiana

The Midwestern cities of West Lafayette and Lafayette Indiana are home to Purdue University, but they also have much more to offer than a college experience.

Have you ever seen a place so often you have no idea what it looks like? It’s somewhere you’ve lived or visited multiple times. It’s such a part of your history that there’s no mystery. It’s a name, a mile marker, a memory.

For me, one of those places is Lafayette/West Lafayette, Indiana. I’ve visited those two-for-one cities  my entire life, but I’d never actually been there. 

My great-grandmother worked at Purdue, and I remember visiting her home across from the greenhouses, entering the front room with the kit-kat clock and its swinging tail and tick-tock eyes.

My grandparents lived on the corner of a dead-end street with a tiny playground, and my brother and I jumped off swings as they hit their apex, and climbed trees, and looked through my grandfather’s telescope, and played the pinball machine in the basement. 

Dad exhibited in the Round the Fountain Art Fair, and I bought my first piece of art from one of his fellow exhibitors when I was twelve.

My grandparents are gone and my dad stopped exhibiting at art fairs decades ago, but I still visit the home of Purdue, only now it’s with my husband to see my sister- and brother-in-law and nephews.

Our visits, though, are still centered around family. That means that, while I have warm memories, I had no idea how much this area has to offer.

With Purdue University at its core, there’s education, of course, and there’s also history, art, culture, delicious food and drink, and a vital sense of community. 

My husband and I finally explored this place that was both familiar and alien to us, truly feeling like “Local Tourists.”

My exploration was hosted by the home of Purdue, but all opinions, as always, are my own and not influenced in the slightest by art, history, wine, or ooey-gooey cheese on crave-worthy pizza.

Things To Do in Lafayette Indiana

Where is lafayette – west lafayette, and why are there two.

If you’ve driven I-65 between Chicago and Indianapolis, you’ve driven through Lafayette. The seat of Tippecanoe County is located 63 miles northwest of the state capital and 105 miles southeast of the Windy City, making it one of the closest road trips from Chicago .

West Lafayette and Lafayette are not just separated by a geographic designator; they’re actually two separate municipalities.

On the east side of the Wabash River is Lafayette. It began as a fort, which became a trading post, and was platted and named in 1825 for General Lafayette, a French officer who fought in the American Revolution and actually turned down a dictatorship in his homeland.

West Lafayette was originally Chauncey, Oakwood, and Kingston, three smaller communities that merged in 1888. They wanted to be part of their big brother to the east because they needed help with their infrastructure, but Lafayette said no.

(I’ve always wondered why people would be adamant about which Lafayette they lived in. Now I know.)

To be even more confusing, downtown Lafayette spans both towns. On the west is the Chauncey Village District, on the east is the Arts & Market District, and in between, the Wabash Riverfront District. All three can be reached by the John Myers Pedestrian Bridge.

While they may technically be two different towns, they work closely together, and any visit to Tippecanoe County should include both.

The Home of Purdue

Any introduction to West Lafayette should begin, naturally, at Purdue University.

Founded in 1869, when West Lafayette was still Chauncey, Purdue University focused on agriculture, the mechanic arts, and military leadership. It was named for John Purdue, a local merchant banker who donated $150,000 to found the university.

His largesse was combined with $50,000 from Tippecanoe County, 100 acres donated by local residents, and revenues from the sale of public lands. Classes began five years later in 1874. 

Ever since that beginning, the house that John built has been known for excellence, and it’s especially known as the “cradle of astronauts.” Our quick tour took us past Wetherill Chemistry Building, where two Nobel Laureates have taught.

Inside the Wilmeth Active Learning Center, we learned how the university is advancing education by providing opportunities for hands-on experience. A stop at the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering gave us a glimpse of the Apollo 1 replica inside and his moon-walk footprints outside.

Each building has a story, and while tours are geared towards prospective students, anyone can register.

Wildcat Creek Winery

Less than a mile away from I-65 is a farmhouse, but this isn’t just any farmhouse. There’s a winery inside.

In 2007, Rick and Kathy Black turned this 1900-era family home into a thriving family business. Wildcat Creek Winery offers cheeses from nearby Fair Oaks, jewelry and paintings from local artists, and, of course, wine.

The location has helped their success; the proximity to the interstate has meant visitors from all over. Within six months of opening, people from 48 states and twelve countries had tasted their wines.

However, location isn’t everything, or even close to the most important thing, especially when it comes to wine. We popped in for a quick tasting and sampled several of their varietals to see for ourselves the reason for their success.

Their most famous wine is their Steuben, a complex semi-sweet that changes character with each sip. Aunt Minnie’s Cherry Tree is labeled “cherry pie in a glass,” and when it’s accompanied by a piece of chocolate (or even without) it’s simply delightful.

My personal favorite was the Prophet’s Rock Red. One of their dry selections, it’s the only wine they oak, and it had almost a buttery mouthfeel.

Bruno’s Pizza and Big O’s Sports Room

Imagine a college town without pizza. It’s a darn-near impossible task, isn’t it? College and pizza go together like tomato sauce and oregano. Yet, when Bruno Itin and his wife, Evelyn, moved to West Lafayette in 1955, pizza was nowhere to be found. They promptly fixed that travesty, and Bruno’s has been serving pizza ever since.

It’s been 60+ years since that opening, and to be around that long, you’ve got to be good. We started with an order of Bruno Dough, a plate of fried dough balls served with marinara and cheese sauce.

I refrained from licking the garlic butter and parmesan sprinkles off the plate, but barely. Then we ordered a salad, followed by Bruno’s Meat pizza.

We are still craving this. That ooey-gooey cheese, that veritable butcher’s counter of meat practically bursting out from under, that simple sauce with a light seasoning of garlic, that dough… Orlando, Bruno’s son, told us it’s because he uses brick cheese in addition to the standard mozzarella.

There’s more to it than that, of course. There’s the love of a family business. Bruno passed in 2006, and Evelyn in 2008, but Orlando and his siblings Bruno, Jr., and Tina, and a slew of granddaughters are still going strong.

Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art

When you see the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art you’d never guess that it was built to be moved. Originally the State of Connecticut Building in the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, a former Connecticut resident saw the building and fell in love with it, so her husband bought it and shipped it to Lafayette, where it became their home.

In 2015, Bob and Ellie Haan turned the home into a museum, and what a museum it is.

Inside its 15,000 square feet is a large collection of Indiana art (hence the name), featuring several impressionist paintings by T.C. Steele and his Hoosier Group contemporaries. Instead of your standard art museum configuration, these paintings are hung throughout the home as they would be if someone still lived there.

Stepping into the mansion is like stepping back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. There’s a Chickering baby grand in the parlor, a stunning Wooten desk complete with inkwell stain, enormous chandeliers, and furniture that’s simply massive.

Allow more time than you think you’ll need to explore, because everywhere you turn is something fascinating, historic, and beautiful.

Artists’ Own

Located in downtown Lafayette’s Arts & Market District, Artists’ Own is a gallery that’s owned and operated by its member artists. Each one is vetted through a jury system, and one of the biggest considerations for inclusion is the ability to produce consistently high-quality work.

Multiple mediums are represented, including paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography, furniture, pottery, fiber, glass, drawings, and much more.

They also make sure that the artists have different styles. This concept means that everyone who walks in the door should find something that appeals to his or her tastes. 

Since it’s operated by those artists, when you visit, you’ll have a chance to meet one.

Triple XXX Family Restaurant

When I told my dad we were going to be touring Lafayette, his first question was “Are you going to Triple XXX?” This question was repeated throughout our visit, and why not? It’s the first and oldest drive-in in Indiana. Open since 1929, it used to be called Triple XXX Thirst Station, after its iconic root beer.

In the 1920s, there were nearly a hundred of these roadside thirst quenchers around the US and Canada, but now only two remain: one in Issaguah, WA, and Triple XXX Family Restaurant in West Lafayette.

The distinctive orange-and-black building is almost always hopping, especially on game days at nearby Purdue.

Not only do they have that tasty root beer, they’ve also got burgers good enough for Guy Fieri. The “chop steaks,” as they call them, are made of 100% sirloin that’s ground in-house.

Prophetstown State Park

Prophetstown State Park  is Indiana’s newest. It’s a unique destination, combining a landscape that’s distinctly Indiana with the history of the Native Americans who fought the settlers’ encroachment, and the farmers who eventually tilled the land.

Located at the confluence of the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers, there’s prairie, wetlands, and woodland bluffs, all within 2300 acres. Our guide told us that the prairie puts on quite a show in early July, becoming a field of color.

Also within that relatively small space (Purdue’s campus is larger) is The Farm at Prophetstown. This replica of a 1920s homestead shows what a working farm back then was like, with plenty of chickens roaming around the Sears and Roebuck kit house.

Visitors can purchase eggs, meat, and sausage, and campers staying on-site will often replenish their supplies. There’s also a water park with a 30-foot tube slide, body flume, lazy river float area, and more.

Prophetstown gets its name from Tenskwatawa, or “The Prophet”. He was Tecumseh’s brother, and in 1808 the two established a village, and by 1811 had convinced members of more than 14 Native American tribes to join them. The goal was to help halt the wave of settlers that was taking over their homes.

Within the park are replicas of the different types of Native American structures these various tribes may have used. If you look to the west, you can see the obelisk at Tippecanoe Battlefield, commemorating the victory of the Americans over the village.

Tippecanoe Battlefield

On November 7, 1811, Indiana Territory Governor William Henry Harrison and his troops thoroughly routed the warriors from nearby Prophetstown. Tecumseh was away when the soldiers arrived, so Tenskwatawa was in charge.

The Prophet decided that killing Harrison would stave off any battle, so some warriors tried to sneak into the American’s encampment before dawn. Not only were they unsuccessful, but after the resulting battle and the tribes’ retreat, Harrison obliterated their abandoned town, burning it to the ground.

Harrison’s success at removing this threat earned him the nickname “Old Tippecanoe.”

Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum is a National Historic Landmark that commemorates this event near Lafayette Indiana. The site includes the 85-foot marble obelisk in the field where the battle occurred, a nature center, and a museum.

The museum teaches you about the battle itself, including a narrated fiber-optic map, as well as the context of the time.

Browsing through the interpretative center is a lesson in the early U.S. and what happened both before and after the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Arni’s Restaurant

One of the things I’ve learned about Tippecanoe County is that the locals support their family-owned restaurants. Arni’s Restaurant opened in 1965 at Market Square. The original is still going strong, and there are now eighteen locations in Indiana.

It’s more than just the food; it’s the people. Fifteen employees have worked at Arni’s for more than thirty years. In the restaurant industry, that statistic is remarkable. 

How do they keep them? They offer benefits to people who work thirty hours a week, including a 401k program, short term disability, and life insurance. 

Arni’s Restaurant is also a solid member of the community, giving to just about everything. Brad and Kurt Cohen have taken over since their father passed away, and Brad said, “if there’s a reason to say yes,” they do.

“You’ve got to take care of the community,” he said, “and the community will take care of you.

After more than half a century in business with no slow-down in sight, they may just be on to something.

Delphi Opera House

Seven places in Delphi, Indiana, are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including the Delphi Courthouse Square Historic District, which itself is comprised of scores of buildings with historic or architectural significance.

One of these buildings is the Delphi Opera House , a success story showcasing a community’s commitment to preserving its past and developing its future.

The Delphi Opera House began as a public gathering place when it opened in 1865 as the Assion-Ruffing City Hall. Never a government center, it was instead where the community performed readings, recitals, and theater.

In 1888 it became the Lathrope and Ruffing Opera House, and soon it became known simply as the Delphi Opera House.

Like many other grand theaters, the growth of cinema spelled its doom. In 1914 the Fire Marshall condemned the building as unsafe. Through the efforts of the Delphi Preservation Society, the building was restored, brought up to code, and reopened 101 years after its doors were closed.

Now it’s back in business, with concerts, theater, and special events. The restoration was so skillful that in 2017 the Preservation Society received the Indiana Landmarks Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration.

Fun fact: When you visit, look for the gorgeous banquette on the landing leading to the theater. It was donated by Bob and Ellie Haan.

Wabash and Erie Canal

What do you do when you want a water-based shipping channel and one doesn’t exist? Why, you build a canal, that’s what. In the early 1800s, settlement of the Indiana territory was booming.

As the population grew, so did the need for goods from back east. The settlers also had stockpiles of their own products they needed to ship. The solution was to build the Wabash-Erie Canal.

At a length of more than 460 miles by the time it was completed, it was the longest canal ever built in North America and effectively provided access from New York all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Despite its final completion in 1853, this grand project never quite lived up to the hype. Erosion was a constant issue, but the bigger threat and ultimate cause of its demise was the railroad.

Today parts of the canal are long forgotten and there’s only one section of the canal that even has water, and that’s in Delphi, Indiana.

The Wabash and Erie Canal Interpretive Center contains a world-class, interactive museum that brings the reason for the canal, the struggle to build it, and the impact it had on the communities surrounding it to life.

There’s a living history village on-site, as well as 2 1/2 miles of waterway and towpath. If you’re there during the warmer months, you can take a 35-minute ride on their model canal boat.

This is a truly impressive destination, and amazingly it was built and is run by volunteers. The spirit we found at Delphi Opera House is, it seems, just part of this community.

East End Grill

Exploring West Lafayette and Lafayette Indiana will work up an appetite, and dinner at East End Grill is just what being a Local Tourist ordered. We settled into the “Industrial American Grill” and sighed.

What a visit. How much we’d seen. We were tired enough we didn’t even want to think, so we asked Corey, our server, what to order, and he steered us in the right direction.

House salad topped with cherrywood smoked bacon and a white balsamic vinaigrette on the side. Fall-off-the-bone BBQ baby back ribs, braised for seven hours, then grilled, then glazed with their house-made sauce.

We’d heard about their special fries, so Jim upgraded his side dish to get that truffle oil, parmesan cheese, and garlic aioli. Me? I went with the grilled swordfish topped with chimichurri and served with a side of corn salsa and fingerling potatoes.

Hungry yet? Well, we had to finish that off with an apple cobbler topped with salted caramel ice cream. If we hadn’t been so tired we would have grabbed a seat at the bar and tipped into their craft beer and whiskey list, but it was time to turn in.

Black Blanket Farm Bed & Breakfast

Our home-away-from-home during our visit to West Lafayette and Lafayette was a much-loved home called Black Blanket Farms Bed & Breakfast . It’s the first (and as of now, only) bed and breakfast in Tippecanoe County. 

Built on a foundation that dates back to the 1800s, this family farmhouse has been recently renovated so that it can provide some peace and quiet for weary travelers, Purdue visitors, and Local Tourists.

It’s a labor of love, and there’s so much heart in this place we instantly felt like we were part of owner Teresa Witkoske’s family. Even Tuco, the rescue dog, forgave me when I sat in his chair.

This restful place is only about a ten minute drive from town, a quick and painless distance, especially when you can wake up to the sound of Mother Nature and take a walk along a shallow pond as geese flutter their wings.

Meet Luke the Land Cruiser

Our chariot for our West Lafayette-Lafayette visit was the surprisingly fun-to-drive Toyota Land Cruiser . I say “surprising” because this vehicle is HUGE, with up to three rows of seating, a height of 74 inches, and a weight of nearly 6,000 pounds.

Despite its size, this baby can move . That 5.7 liter V-8 engine with 8-speed transmission turns this beast into a purring, smooth-riding beauty. The moment I put pressure on the accelerator I commented “The force is strong with this one.” Henceforth, he became known as Luke.

Luke the Land Cruiser.

Inside, this luxury Jedi-class SUV is filled with more bells and whistles than the R2-D2 and BB-8 combined. The seats can both heat you up and cool you down. You never have to worry about cold hands with the heated steering wheel. And warm beverages are a thing of the past with the center console cooler.

The supple leather seats can be adjusted ten different ways, ensuring this is one comfortable ride. The front row can be adjusted up, down, back, forward, more lumbar support, less lumbar support – and once you’ve found your optimal configuration, you can save it.

The backseats get their own climate control and DVD entertainment system. (Popcorn optional.) One thing that particularly tickled me was how the steering wheel would pull into the dashboard when you turn off the engine.

Once settled in and ready to hit the road, the radar-controlled cruise control, proximity warning system, and navigation get you there safely. We didn’t have the opportunity to go off-roading, but if we had, Luke would have handled it with the smooth sailing of a hovercraft. The only downside is the MPG – it’s a woeful 15 (if you’re lucky).

All-in-all, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a first-in-class premium SUV with stability, speed, comfort, and rugged good looks. Thanks, Toyota, for letting us borrow Luke for our trip to Lafayette!

Academic and Research Excellence Update May 6, 2024

Dear colleagues,

In our pursuit of academic and research excellence at Purdue, we are providing you with updates on key developments, initiatives and tools to support our faculty and staff as well as updates on important faculty recognitions.

Key Initiatives, Updates and Investments

1. Faculty Enhanced Research Appointment Program. Purdue is renewing and expanding the pilot Faculty Enhanced Research Appointment Program (FERAP) to include tenured/tenure-track faculty, clinical faculty, and faculty subject to an NIH or other agency salary cap. Under FERAP, qualified faculty members from all Purdue campuses may be eligible for a new concurrent faculty appointment. This could allow for up to 0.75 FTE to be established in a separate research appointment at a salary up to 25% higher than their current institutional base salary. Eligible faculty can apply for a FERAP appointment if they are dedicating 0.25 FTE or greater to externally funded grants and contracts and have qualified external funding sources in place that cover the appointment during the academic year.

Applications for the 2024-25 academic year faculty must be received by May 31, 2024. Details of this initiative, including program guidelines , qualifications and the application process, are available at the FERAP webpage .

2. Purdue Excellence in Research Administration (PERA). Preparations for the PERA system to begin its rollout this fall are in full swing. The first PERA modules - Grants (pre/post), Agreements (contract negotiations and tracking) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) will be introduced in October 2024. These will be followed by modules for Institutional Biosafety Committee, Export Control, Conflict of Interest, Conflict of Commitment (Reportable Outside Activity) and Institutional Review Board (IRB). PERA is expected to be fully implemented by October 2025.

The first round of PERA information sessions was recently completed with more than 680 researchers and research administrators attending. In coming months, there will be ample new opportunities to learn more about PERA. We encourage you to bookmark the PERA website to stay informed about upcoming PERA information and training sessions and important updates.

3. Important technical reporting reminder. The National Institutes of Health, Office of Naval Research and the US Army recently postponed or withheld awards for an entire institution because of a principal investigator’s failure to submit final technical reports ( see related article ). The National Science Foundation has taken a slightly different approach, but all these actions are clear indications of how seriously federal agencies view the timely submission of these reports.

We encourage all Purdue principal investigators to review their deadlines for technical report submissions to ensure timely delivery. Fortunately, despite having some outstanding technical reports, Purdue has not experienced any withheld awards or delayed payments. Also, we are pleased to share that one advancement of the new Purdue Excellence in Research Administration (PERA) system will be to deliver system-generated 90-, 60-, 30-day notices to Purdue researchers reminding them to submit technical reports on their grants.

4. New research security training and certification. As we continue working to safeguard Purdue-led research against inappropriate interference by foreign entities, we have introduced a new online learning module for research security training that addresses contemporary issues and satisfies new federal requirements. We ask that all researchers within the colleges of agriculture, engineering and science and the Purdue Polytechnic Institute complete this training by Sept. 1, 2024. We will communicate about specific training deadlines for other colleges later in the year. Additionally, all faculty who apply for federal funding from NSF or DoD will be required to certify that they do not participate in a Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Program in order to submit their proposals.

5. IRB open office hours for summer. Since January, the chairs of the institutional review board (IRB) for human subjects and its associated processes have held regular open office hours to assist faculty and graduate students with submission processes and answer questions. Chairs Jeff Haddad and Dan Foti will continue these sessions throughout the summer. Walk-in sessions will take place Mondays and Wednesdays 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Tuesdays 1-2:30 p.m., and Thursdays 10-11:30 a.m. in Hovde 328.

6. Major capital projects. Last year we shared updates about several major capital projects . These are part of the university’s investment of more than $1.3 billion to support academic and research efforts with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Some recent additions are:

• Max W. & Maileen Brown Family Hall first floor renovation: addition of modern instructional and research labs (planned completion May 2024).
• Mechanical Engineering building renovation: modernization of entire original section of the mechanical engineering building (planned completion April 2025).

7. Funding from Purdue life and health sciences summit has enabled development of a new audiology research center. On May 1, Purdue announced plans for the new Accessible Precision Audiology Research Center (APARC) in Indianapolis . Led by director Michael Heinz of the College of Health and Human Sciences, the center will use AI-enabled analysis tools to improve current audiology testing methods and address the urgent need for precision audiology, especially among underserved populations.

8. Research credit card trial. This pilot credit card program for externally funded research project purchases was launched in March 2023. Based on observations made during the pilot, there is a need for some researchers to be given individual purchasing cards. The revised program will be available beginning July 1. Interested individuals can work with their business offices to participate.

9. One Less Signature initiative . This initiative was recently launched to create greater efficiencies across campus on administrative processes and forms by eliminating unnecessary or redundant approvals. So far, the ideas submitted and under review pertain to improved workflow for purchasing and employee separation. Ideas from all areas of the university, including student and academic areas, are welcome. Please submit suggestions to: [email protected] .

Notable Faculty Achievements

10. Datta elected Member of National Academy of Sciences. Supriyo Datta, the Thomas Duncan Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Election to NAS membership is recognition of distinguished and continuing achievements in original research and is considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive.

11. Four faculty members elected American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows. Congratulations to four Purdue faculty members who were recently elected Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The new fellows are Trevor Anderson (chemistry), Songlin Fei (forestry and natural resources), Tesfaye Mengiste (botany and plant pathology), and Ronnie Wilbur (speech, language, and hearing sciences and linguistics). Elected by the AAAS Council, fellows are recognized for their achievements across disciplines, from research, teaching, and technology to administration in academia, industry and government, to excellence in communicating and interpreting science to the public.

Faculty members who wish to be nominated for a recognition or to nominate another faculty member can request assistance here . Faculty Recognition Program staff will begin outreach in May to department heads to encourage and support applications for Sloan Research Fellowships and Guggenheim Fellowships .

12. Purdue faculty authors. The number of books authored by Purdue faculty members continues to increase. In the first four months of 2024, 17 new books hit the shelves. The Faculty Recognition Office maintains a list at Purdue-authored books (source: Academic Analytics). We congratulate all our Purdue authors!

AI Platforms, Tools and Resources

13. National AI Research Resource Pilot (NAIRR). As part of the launch of the NAIRR pilot, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy are collaborating to create an opportunity for the research community to request access to a set of advanced computing resources. Purdue will join the NAIRR pilot as a resource provider in NSF’s call for the next round of allocation requests in May 2024. 14. Library Guide on Artificial Intelligence. Purdue Libraries recently published a new Library Guide on Artificial Intelligence designed to equip Purdue faculty, staff and students with a range of AI resources carefully selected for their relevance and effectiveness. It serves as a toolbox for research, teaching and learning purposes, and image creation. The guide offers access to diverse AI tools and provides materials on citing AI-generated content, crafting effective prompts, and exploring the relationship between AI and ethical considerations. 15. Scite.ai. An innovative research tool recently acquired by Purdue, scite.ai is now available for use by faculty, staff, and students through the Purdue Libraries. Scite.ai is an AI platform for discovering and evaluating scientific articles. It allows users to see how a publication has been cited and to explore literature quickly and effectively. The Purdue Libraries team has developed a Scite.ai user guide and will offer Scite.ai workshops in May and June.
