Would not agree that all the countries in Latin America are safe to visit. Colombia for example is level 3 reconsider travel – many trouists are being found dead with their bank accounts having been emptied beforehand. Express kidnappings are also becoming more common unfortunately in latin america.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What countries are a part of Latin America?

Latin America encompasses Central and South America, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and the Caribbean Islands.

Do I need a visa to travel to Latin America?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to Latin America depends on the individual country you're visiting and the nationality of your passport.

Each country in Latin America has its own entry and visa requirements, so it's best to do your own research before you travel.

For example, nationals from the US, Australia, Canada, the UK and New Zealand don't need to obtain a visa before visiting most South American countries. Still, it's always wise to double-check well before your intended arrival.

What is internet access like in Latin America?

Internet access in Latin America can vary from country to country and between different regions in that country.

Most hotel chains or other accommodation options in major cities will have wi-fi, so connecting to the Internet will be easy.

An international SIM card with a local provider is recommended if you'd rather have no restrictions (and no exorbitant data roaming fees). This still doesn't mean you're guaranteed access to the Internet, though, as the signal is often limited or unreliable in rural areas such as Argentina, Peru and Colombia.

What are the toilets like in Latin America?

The toilet facilities in Latin America differ depending on which country you're in and what region of that country you're in.

Most major cities have westernized toilet facilities in places such as restaurants and hotels, but the further from urban areas you are, the less likely you'll find these types of toilets, so set your expectations accordingly.

One thing to note is that you'll be asked not to flush toilet paper down the toilet. Plumbing systems in most Latin American countries aren't equipped to handle toilet paper. Instead, bathrooms usually have a small sanitation bin beside the toilet to dispose of toilet paper.

Can I drink the water in Latin America?

In most Latin American countries such as Belize, Guatemala, Brazil and Peru, drinking tap water isn't recommended.

This also means you should brush your teeth with bottled or filtered water, be mindful when showering, ask for drinks without ice in them and peel your fruit and vegetables before you eat them.

The two Latin American countries where tap water is generally considered safe to drink are Chile and Colombia; however, you might still get an upset stomach due to the different mineral content.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, bring a reusable water bottle that can be filled with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

When is the best time to visit Latin America?

The best time to visit Latin America is between December and April, when days are nice and dry with reasonably warm but comfortable temperatures. However, this time is also peak season, so expect large attractions to be crowded and accommodation prices to be increase.

If you want nice weather without all of the tourists, try traveling during a shoulder season (September - November or (April - May).

Is tipping expected in Latin America?

Tipping is generally expected by tourists in Latin America, with a gratuity of 10% being the average amount. Most restaurants will add a service charge to your bill, but it's also expected that you leave a 10% tip. However, it's more or less voluntary as some countries don't have a strong tipping culture.

What currency will I need on a Latin American tour?

The most used currency in Latin America is the peso, which is used in 7 countries; Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Uruguay.

Some other currencies include the Brazilian Real (BRL), the Peruvian Sol (PEN), the Costa Rican Solon (CRC) and the Honduran Lempira (HNL). Some Latin American countries also accept United States Dollars (USD).

Do I need to bring cash with me on a Latin American tour?

Cash is still widely used in Latin America and in some countries, is the preferred form of payment, so you should definitely have cash on you during your tour.

Your leader can tell you the closest and most reliable ATMs if you didn't change over money at the airport.

Is Latin America safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers visiting Latin America.

Although some countries are more tolerant and accepting than others (Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is considered to be the gay capital of Latin America), public displays of affection between same-sex couples are still heavily frowned upon in some countries and countries such as Bolivia still have homosexuality laws in place.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

He helped arrange extra tours, made sure we went to the best places and it all felt very safe with him. Hotels were intrepide style - ok to sleep but on the run down side.

This is a great trip if you want to see a lot of places in a short time! There was a good amount of travel time but I felt it was worth it to see everything we did including Mayan ruins, sandboarding on a volcano, old colonial towns, some of the local crafts and foods, the beach, etc.

Awesome trip, great way to see so much of Mexico in a short space of time. Wow what a four. While relatively short, this was a great trip to see the highlights of Argentina and Brazil. There was a perfect amount of time at each location to take in the sights and we did it feel rushed at all. We did a bit of an add on and went to a tango show as well As both sides of Iguazú Falls and a jeep tour in Rio. All Were well worth it and I'm glad we added these on. The transfers and tour guides etc were first rate and everything was well organized. The tour team kept in daily communication amd confounded all our pick up times daily and when we had some minor provider issues they were very quick to rectify and make right. Everything for transfers , flights and a conflation was great. . Cannot talk more highly of this tour and the providers - Wandeful Holidays provide such a personalized service and you do not feel like another number . It was so assuring to know they were only a call or message away if we needed assistance and that gave us great peace of mind. Highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to see the sights of Brazil and Argentina.

The tour is not organised to accommodate overseas travellers who might have jet lag and/or have problems with the altitude. Because my plane from Madrid to Lima was cancelled, I arrived on the day the tour started, as did two girl from Canada, one of which did your tour to Egypt, which she enjoyed. Arriving at lunch time in Cusco, I was housed in a “hotel” that resembled a youth hostel. “Hotel Sol Oriente” is so primitive, it does not even have bed side lamps! However, the people who run it are very friendly. The guide gave me a number of tickets and vouchers and said that I would be picked up in an hour for a city tour, but did not explain what this entailed. So no time to relax, eat lunch or buy a SIM card. I was hesitant but the guide insisted that this would be my only chance to see Cusco, so I agreed. BIG mistake! The city tour basically centred on the Cathedral and Inka ruins. After the first lot of ruins, around 4pm I hoped (as did the Canadians and some people from Brasil, one of which was violently sick) that we would return to the city square from where we were supposed to walk to our hotel. However, the tour guide (a knowledgeable man called Romulo) said no, there were 2 more lot of ruins to come, all further away from the city. The Brazilians and I remained in the coach. At the second lot of ruins we were told that we would travel even further out of the city to a market. That meant that we would not be back at the city square before 18:30. I organised a private car and returned by myself. The two Canadian girls carried on, but the next day when we left for Maccupichu they were not on the coach even though we had the same itinerary. Day 2 was fine, we had a nice guide who took us to Ollantaytambo, the only way to get to Maccupichu. On the way we passed the salt mines which I was supposed to see on day 4. The hotel in Maccupichu was pure luxury compared to the one in Cusco. I was met by a tour guide in the evening who told me that I had to be at the main square at 6am. Five minutes to 6am I was at the square. A middle aged Canadian couple I met on the coach to Ollantaytambo told me that yet another guide would call my name to go up to the mountain. Their name had been called, but not mine. So I stood there until the square completely emptied. I spotted a tour guide and asked for help. He contacted Waldir from Kantu Travel who organised for someone to pick me up. I got to the mountain, which is most spectacular. There I met up with the Canadian middle aged couple. The time up on the mountain was fantastic, if exhausting. We had to return by ourselves pick up the luggage, go to the train and then we’re driven back to Cusco. The Canadian couple was so exhausted that they barely managed to get onto the coach. They were supposed to go to the painted cliffs early next day. I do not know if they did. It was clear to me that I did not want to travel the same route the next day, to the salt mines, so I messaged Waldir that I was not to join. On day 4 I explored Cusco by myself. A charming city full of friendly people. On day 5 I was picked up from the hotel and taken to the airport. On balance, I suggest that you reorganise this tour. It is a spectacular destination, but international travellers need to be considered. As it is, it is more of a self guided tour with the occasional guide. Day 1 should be allowed for acclimatisation. Day 2 should have a city tour starting late but finishing early. Day 3 travel to Maccupichu. Day 4 see Maccupichu and stay there overnight. Day 5 return on an early train to Cusco and include the Salines or something else. Leave Cusco on day 6. It seems that the tour has been put together by people unfamiliar with long distance travel. For this reason I will not recommend this tour as it is at the moment.

Everything about this tour was well thought out and executed. The communication between the company and us was the perfect amount. I would recommend this tour to everybody who is looking to see as much in Cusco as possible in a week. I only suggest you moderately active because it is a lot of walking.

It was a wonderful trek, incredible nature and nice hiking camps! Be aware, you hike 7-9 hours a day for 4 days...this is not for everybody. But its worth it!!! Patagonia is the best :)

The trekking was very good but one of the Cuernos Refugio charged me 19% VAT because I did not have the PID. I had to obtain a duplicate or apply for it at a police station within 7 days for the Cuernos front desk to cancel the charge. I thought I had paid for the entire tour. I was not warned that the park refugios would try to charge me tax on a tour that I had paid for in full onlin months before. This was very distressing. I did not feel welcome.

The big three U.S. airlines have poured capacity into short-haul leisure markets in Latin America. In the first half of 2024, the strategy has emerged as a weakness.

On the United earnings call on Wednesday, United Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said, “Weakness was felt in near Latin America markets.” At both United and Delta, revenue per available seat mile in Latin America declined between 12% and 13%, and yield declined between 10% and 12%.

In the current quarter, Delta’s Latin America unit revenue is expected to again show a double digit decline due to pressure in short haul markets, although both Delta and United executives said the longterm outlook is positive. Meanwhile American, with the biggest presence in the region, is expected to disclose the biggest impact from the market saturation when it reports earnings on Thursday.

Despite the warning signs, the rush to Latin American beach resorts continued in the past month, as the big three carriers all launched service to newly opened Tulum International Airport from hubs including Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Miami.

Tulum offers an alternative to Cancun, a highly developed resort with a sometimes crowded airport. “Historically people flew to Cancun and drove to Tulum,” said Frontier Airlines CEO Barry Biffle in an interview. “I don’t know if more people will go now, but a lot will go.” Frontier serves Cancun, but has not announced any plans to fly to Tulum.

The Tulum initiative has come as yields and fares to Cancun have fallen. Between January 2023 and January 24, the average fare fell about 11%, according to aviation analytics company Cirium. The average January one-way fare excluding taxes and fees was $201, fare, down from $226.

Statistics on Latin American growth, also compiled by Cirium for this story, show two additional trends. First, capacity increases in Caribbean resort destinations have been sizable. Secondly, Delta has led growth in both the Caribbean and South America. As Delta executives have said repeatedly, the carrier wants to eat away at American’s dominance in the region.

In Caribbean resort destinations, between the first quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, U.S. carriers boosted capacity by about 18% or a million seats, Cirium said.

Delta added 246,011 seats, growing by 32% in Caribbean resort destinations. American added 239,606 seats, a similar number of seats, but grew by a lower 13.5% off its larger base of nearly two million seats. United added 170,694 seats, growing by 31%. JetBlue added 159,371 seats, growing 11%, and Frontier added 100,220 seats, growing by 29%, Cirium said.

Looking at destinations in South America, Cirium said Delta boosted capacity by 32% or 70,975 seats. American added 55,284 seats, just 9% growth due to its already high presence in the region. United added 32,366 seats, for 14% growth.

Finally, looking at Cancun and Tulum, capacity to the two destinations grew about 20% between first quarter 2023 and first quarter 2024. All ten U.S. carriers flying to Cancun boosted capacity. In the first quarter, Cancun had about two million seats: Tulum, just getting started, had about 4,000.

In an April 11th report, Bank of American analyst Andrew Didora noted that in the big three carrier’s first quarter results, “The one negative is weakness on Latin America routes, which could limit AAL's revenue growth vs DAL and UAL,” given American’s bigger presence in the region.

For American, Didora wrote that Latin America is “a headwind,” severe enough that “We see risk to EPS guide.” In fact, Didora cited multiple headwinds including “AAL's schedules reflect the highest domestic capacity growth rate in 2Q24 at +7.5%; fewer premium seats across its fleet; a smaller transatlantic network; and outsized exposure to Latin America, especially in the short-haul market.”

Several rooms in this high-ceilinged converted mansion double up as a great café and restaurant during the day and a dance club after hours. Thursday through Saturday are laid-back techno and funk club nights, a top choice among Moscow's hipster youth, with free entry on Thursdays.

This gay club for both men and women is tricky to find, but has a welcoming atmosphere. It has DJs, film screenings, karaoke, and cheap drink deals.

With its homely atmosphere, film nights, and tasty food, this club has become the top refuge of Moscow's gay and lesbian community and offers dancing and a good range of cultural events. Visitors should exercise caution when entering and leaving, though, as the bar has been subject to homophobic attacks in recent years.

A vast warehouse to the east of the center makes a refreshing change from the city's glitzy clubbing scene. The club regularly hosts big international techno DJs and its raucous parties have been known to carry on long into the afternoon.

One of the best places in Moscow for live rock performances, this enormous five-story club includes a restaurant, a pool hall, a dance club, and several bars.

This place is not cheap, and the face control gets strict from time to time, but if you're looking for an elite bar scene, it's hard to beat. This is where Moscow's upper crust—everyone from upwardly mobile execs to almost-oligarchs—comes to grab its after-work drink, or a bite in one of the three lavishly appointed dining halls.

BB King Blues Club

The man himself came for the opening, and visiting Western stars have continued to make appearances here, often for post-concert jams. Call ahead to book a table for concerts as the small hall fills up fast.

With the biggest club stage in Moscow and a dance floor capacity of 3,500 people, this live music venue is a prime spot to see big and up-and-coming Russian groups, as well as foreign acts and DJs.

Central Station

This popular spot with students is one of the most well established gay clubs in town, with a regular rotation of good DJs. Mostly men come here, but women are welcome.

Chinese Pilot Jao Da

Live music and tasty, affordable food draw a bohemian crowd to this cellar, whose name translates as "Chinese Pilot."

City Space Bar

Perched 140 meters above the city and with stunning panoramic views, this upscale cocktail bar is the perfect spot to watch the sun set over Moscow.

A Latin American–theme involves occasional live Latino music, though music is usually provided by DJs playing Eurodance. Drink service can be slow at night, when the staff often dances with the crowd. Show up early or you'll never get in.

Crocus City Hall

Sting and Elton John have played at this huge complex on the Moscow ring road with a 6,200-seat auditorium. Check ahead and you might catch your favorite group from home.

A cavernous venue with free entry and cheap drinks, which caters to lovers of reggae, funk, and soul.

Denis Simachev Bar. Music at this stylishly decorated and very popular venue in the city's trendy Krasnaya Oktyabr complex varies from pop to techno. Some 400 disco balls hang over the club's large and lively dance floor. The club is well worth a visit for its roof terrace with stunning views over the Moskva River.

Glavpivtorg

Live musicians perform songs from the Soviet era at this enormous retro eatery with a big choice of beers, including its own brand. The traditional Russian dishes are expensive but served up with style. Book ahead, as it gets busy even on weeknights.

Cheap beer and a buzzing atmosphere attract a young crowd at Gogol. Head here for a quiet drink and a game of foosball during the week or join the packs of students for a rock gig at the weekend.

Hard Rock Cafe

It may be an international chain, but somehow the Moscow branch manages to maintain its own flavor. Locals come for the pop-music classics, and Westerners stop by for a taste of home.

R&B and hip hop hits, live music, and hookah pipes make this club a popular night spot for expats and Russian alike. Lenient face control also helps bring in the crowds.

Krizis Zhanra

An easygoing but stylish clientele fills this café-bar. In the evenings, the staff pushes away the tables to create a small dance floor. Live music on the weekends is mostly indie-rock, but DJs through the week play an eclectic mix of pop, rock, reggae, and funk.

A black curtain to the right of the counter in a cheap eatery, Lucky Noodles, conceals an atmospheric underground boîte with chandeliers, a dance floor, and a creative assortment of cocktails.

Papa's Bar and Grill

Themed nights, daily happy hours, and disco music ensure there is always a party atmosphere at this lively club. Entrance is free during the week and expat nights are held every Wednesday.

This is probably the city's most reliable club for trendy, yet laid-back crowds and good DJs. It's the place to be on Thursday night. On Sunday night it turns into one of the city's most popular gay clubs.

This is the place to go for an authentic Irish pub atmosphere and a pint of Guinness. Wood-paneled walls, shamrocks, and tons of expatriates are enough to make even the weariest traveler feel at home.

Russia Urges Citizens to Avoid Flying Turkish Airlines to Latin America

The Russian Embassy in Turkey has  urged citizens to avoid flying Turkish Airlines due to a recent uptick in passengers being denied boarding on connecting flights from Istanbul to Latin American destinations.

“We’re compelled to advise our citizens to carefully weigh the advisability of using the services of this airline,” the embassy said in a statement Monday.

It accused Turkish Airlines of turning away Russian passengers from boarding flights to Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Panama and other Latin American countries without explanation in recent weeks.

“The issue exists and it’s a serious one. And it’s unclear to us to what extent the Turkish authorities realize its seriousness,” the Russian embassy said, adding that the Turkish foreign ministry has provided “no clear reaction” to its written and verbal complaints.

Travel news outlets  reported in early March that Turkish Airlines denied boarding to a handful of Russian passengers bound for cities like Buenos Aires and Sao Paolo for reasons including a lack of baggage, unsuitable documents and no travel history.

Turkish Airlines around that time  published additional rules for flights to South America, which were  linked to concerns over a reported surge in the number of Turkish asylum seekers seeking to reach the United States.

The Russian Association of Tour Operators (ATOR)  noted that citizens of other countries in addition to those of Russia are denied boarding on Turkish Airlines transfers to Latin American countries.

ATOR also attributed the denials to concerns about illegal immigration to the United States. There has been a surge in Russians crossing the U.S.-Mexico border since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Shot, a Telegram news channel with purported links to Russia’s security services,  estimated that around 1,000 Russians have been denied boarding on flights to Latin America from Istanbul.

On Tuesday, the Russian Embassy in Ankara  advised  recommendations for passengers denied boarding, including contacting the Russian consulate in Istanbul and pursuing legal action against Turkish Airlines.

Turkey has become a key transit hub for travel to and from Russia due to mutual airspace bans between Russia and Western countries imposed following the invasion of Ukraine.

8 facts about recent Latino immigrants to the U.S.

Nearly 20 million Latino immigrants lived in the United States in 2021 , accounting for almost a third (31.8%) of the nation’s total Latino population that year.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to explore the demographic characteristics of recent Latino immigrants to the United States, both overall and by individual origin group. Recent immigrants are defined as those who have resided in the U.S. for five years or less at the time of the survey.

The analysis uses microdata from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2000 decennial census and 2010 and 2021 American Community Surveys, accessed through the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) from the University of Minnesota. Findings in this analysis are only shown for origin groups with an unweighted sample size of more than 200.

The terms Hispanic and Latino are used interchangeably in this analysis, as are the terms foreign born and immigrant . Foreign born refers to individuals born outside the U.S. who are not U.S. citizens at birth.

In this analysis, Hispanic origin is not the same as birthplace. Origin is determined by Hispanic self-identity. For example, a respondent who identifies as being of Mexican origin may have been born in a country other than Mexico. Hispanics of Puerto Rican origin are included in the analysis of all Hispanics living in the U.S., but not the analyses of Hispanic immigrants living in the U.S. Those born in Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens at birth.

All displayed numbers are rounded. Shares and percent changes are calculated using unrounded numbers.

About 2.6 million of these immigrants arrived in the U.S. in the five years prior to the 2021 American Community Survey – the primary data source for this analysis – but before a recent spike in asylum-seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border .

Here are eight facts about these recently arrived Latino immigrants in the U.S. 

The number of recent Hispanic immigrants to the U.S. has declined. In 2000, there were 3.8 million foreign-born Hispanics who had been in the U.S. for five years or less. This number fell to 3 million in 2010 and 2.6 million in 2021.

Meanwhile, the number of Hispanic immigrants who have been in the U.S. for more than five years has grown, from 10.4 million in 2000 to 15.9 million in 2010 and to 17.3 million in 2021.

Mexican, Guatemalan, Honduran, Dominican and Venezuelan immigrants make up a large share of the recent Hispanic immigrant population in the U.S.

In 2021, Mexicans made up 34% of the recent Hispanic immigrant population and were the largest group. They are also the largest group among all Hispanic immigrants (54%) and all U.S. immigrants (24%). Even so, the foreign-born Mexican population in the U.S. declined 8.8% since 2010, including a decline in the number of recently arrived Mexicans.

Another 36% of recent Hispanic immigrants to the U.S. are Guatemalan, Honduran, Dominican or Venezuelan. Each of these four groups saw an increase in recent arrivals from 2010 to 2021. For example, the number of Venezuelan immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for five years or less increased from 40,000 in 2010 to 215,000 in 2021.

The median age for recent Hispanic immigrants to the U.S. is 27.9 years, though the median varies widely among origin groups. Cubans and Venezuelans have the highest median ages at 36.3 and 36.0 years. The next oldest group is Peruvians at 35.3 years.

Hondurans and Guatemalans are the youngest groups among recent Hispanic immigrants to the U.S., with median ages of 22.4 and 21.9 years, respectively.

Among recent Hispanic immigrants to the U.S., Venezuelans are the most likely to have a bachelor’s degree. Overall, 27% of recent Hispanic immigrants to the U.S. ages 25 and older have earned at least a bachelor’s degree in the U.S. or elsewhere – up from 11% in 2000.

Around six-in-ten recent Venezuelan immigrants ages 25 and older (62%) have completed at least a bachelor’s degree. The same is true for 43% of recent Hispanic immigrants who are Colombian and 42% of those who are Peruvian.

In contrast, 88% of recent Guatemalan arrivals have no college experience, the highest share among recent Hispanic immigrants. They are followed by recent immigrants from Honduras (76%) and El Salvador (71%).

Women represent a growing share of recent Hispanic immigrants to the U.S. and are a majority in some origin groups. In 2021, women made up 47.8% of all recent Hispanic immigrants, up from 43.6% in 2000.

More than half of recent Peruvian (55.8%) and Colombian (55.7%) immigrants to the U.S. are women, the highest shares among recent Hispanic immigrants.

By contrast, 59.8% of recent Guatemalan immigrants are men, the highest share of any origin group. Men also account for more than half of recent Mexican immigrants (55.7%).

Four-in-ten recent Latino immigrant adults have never been married. Recent Guatemalan, Honduran and Salvadoran immigrant adults are the most likely never to have been married. This is the case for about half or more of recent immigrants from these countries. Notably, these are also the groups with the lowest median ages.

Among recent Mexican immigrants – the largest group in 2021 – a majority (54%) are married, while 38% have never been married.  

Recent arrivals represent more than 25% of all Hispanic immigrants in some states. This is especially the case in Louisiana, where 30.9% of all Hispanic immigrants have arrived within the last five years as of 2021.

Still, these states have relatively small Hispanic immigrant populations overall. The largest Latino immigrant populations are in California, Texas and Florida. In these states, recent arrivals account for a comparably small share of all Hispanic immigrants.

About a quarter of recent Latino immigrants to the U.S. are proficient in English, but there are notable differences by origin group. About a third of recent Venezuelan (34%), Peruvian (32%) and Colombian immigrants (31%) ages 5 and older are proficient in English.

By comparison, recent Guatemalan, Nicaraguan and Honduran immigrants are the least likely to be proficient in English. Fewer than 20% in each group report speaking English at home or speaking it “very well.”

Overall, recent Hispanic immigrants in 2021 were slightly more proficient in English than those in 2000 (26% vs. 21%).

Hispanic immigrants who have been in the U.S. longer than five years are more proficient in English. This is the case for 37% of Hispanic immigrants who have been in the U.S. for five to 10 years and 39% of Hispanic immigrants who have been in the U.S. for 11 or more years.

A visit to such a venue could be turned into excursus to Russian history, since many restaurants are located in the very heart of Moscow, in old mansions, with which interesting stories and legend are closely connected. For instance, Godunov Restaurant is located in the premises that used to serve as a monastery refectory. Tour architectural wonders, discover Soviet history, and savor local flavors in this gold-domed city.

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here you will find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers. Moscow’s spirit mirrors its uncontainable size. Muscovites, the city’s approximately 12 million residents, are always on the run, so be prepared to keep pace with their energy. Here’s how to make the most of three days in Moscow .

Day 1: Mosaics and metro stations

9 a.m. Navigate the labyrinth of the Moscow metro , a living, breathing work of art crisscrossing the metropolis. Expect marble arches and pillars, gilded mosaics, and sparkling chandeliers. Each station is unique. Some of the most beautiful stations are Kievskaya and Prospekt Mira (brown line); Mayakovskaya (dark green line); and Ploschad Revolutsii , Arbatskaya and Elektrozavodskaya (dark blue line). Getting lost on the metro is a rite of passage. However, ahead of the 2018 World Cup, most trains introduced route maps and announcements in English to make navigation easier for outsiders.

Three stations take you to Red Square, but Ploschad Revolutsii is ideal. Its platforms have numerous bronze statues of soldiers with their dogs. Locals often stop by to rub the dogs’ noses as they make a wish. ( See pictures of Moscow’s surprisingly elegant subway stations. )

9:45 a.m. Head to the iconic Red Square to see the red-bricked towers and the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum , and the psychedelically colorful domes of the St. Basil’s Cathedral . Queue early outside Lenin’s mausoleum for a spooky date with the man behind the Russian Revolution, who has rested in this tomb, preserved in chemicals, for almost 100 years .

The postcard-perfect St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s victory over the Khanate of Kazan and the transformation of Moscow into a major center of power. Drop in for a quick visit or keep walking south towards the Moskva River and the Bolshoi Moskvaretskii Bridge for spectacular views of the Kremlin and the Red Square.

Another structure that will catch your eye is the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior , just southwest of the Kremlin. Unlike St. Basil’s, this Cathedral did not survive the communist persecution of religion. The original was destroyed in 1931 and the area was converted to an open-air swimming pool, the largest in the world. The fall of communism brought with it religious freedom and the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s. If you turn around, you will see one of the “Seven Sisters,” the Stalinist monoliths that command Moscow’s skyline .

11:45 a.m. Head back towards the Red Square for a shopping trip at GUM (pronounced goom ), the largest department store in Russia. Much like Russia, the store has undergone many changes. Built in imperial times as a massive trading center, GUM’s Soviet-era badge of honor was being relatively better stocked than other stores. Today, it’s a glittering mall that houses Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Even if you don’t shop, the long, arched galleries and concave glass roof make it an architectural delight. Next, make your way to the third floor for Stolovaya No. 57 (Canteen No. 57), a Soviet-style restaurant with local dishes and a laid-back vibe. Try the syrniki (roughly translated as cheesecakes), buckwheat with mushroom sauce, or meat cutlets.

2 p.m. The Moscow Kremlin , the seat of the Russian Government, was built in the 15th century and houses cathedrals, museums, and unique objects from imperial Russia. Start with the Armory Chamber , a treasure trove of Fabergé eggs, imperial dresses, and gifts presented to the Tsars. Don’t miss the Diamond Fund inside the Armory where guests can marvel at the crown of Tsarina Catherine the Great.

The Bolshoi Theatre hosts ballet and opera performances, including classics like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Take a stroll around Cathedral Square to admire the golden domes that mushroom from Orthodox cathedrals. Look out for the 19-foot-high bronze Tsar Bell for great photo ops. The nearby Tsar Cannon is also worth a look. Wrap up in the Kremlin Garden and see if you can spot Cosmos, the lone oak tree that was planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, two days after his extraordinary flight in April 1961 . 7 p.m. Finish your day with a ballet or opera performance at Bolshoi Theatre , one of the strongholds of Russian theatrical excellence since the 19th century. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake on the stage where it premiered in 1877. Performances sell out so book in advance, and arrive early to enjoy the neoclassical building. Russians take theater seriously so wear your best outfit.

Day 2: Fine art and food

10 a.m. The extraordinary entrance to Tretyakov Gallery welcomes guests to Moscow’s most definitive collection of fine arts spanning almost a millennium. You can explore 12th-century icons and mosaics or get lost in the brushstrokes of 19th- and 20th-century Russian heavyweights such as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. The New Tretyakov wing showcases artists from the Soviet period.

1 p.m. Soak up some summer sun in one of Moscow’s most dynamic open spaces: Park Gorky , a hipster paradise that underwent a major makeover from a Soviet relic to the center of cultural life. Grab some food on the go or sit down for a meal at Grill Bar Zharovnya or La Boule . Wander through the open-air sculpture museum, Muzeon , the home of countless statues and symbols from the Soviet times. Muzeon runs next to the Moscow River and offers a great view of the almost 322-foot-high statue of Tsar Peter the Great.

7 p.m. One place you must dine in Moscow is White Rabbit . The restaurant, which has been featured among the top 50 in the world, owes its success to chef Vladimir Mukhin, whose culinary prowess was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table . White Rabbit serves Russian food with innovative twists; think sea urchin caviar and beetroot hummus. Quite fittingly, there is also rabbit on the menu. Did we mention the restaurant’s glass dome offers spectacular views of Moscow City?

Day 3: Markets and museums

10 a.m. If the Moscow Kremlin is stately, then the colorful Izmailovo Kremlin cultural center has a bit of a Disneyland feel to it. Built in 2007, Izmailovo is a great place for a stroll before bargain-hunting at Vernisazh , a flea market with stalls selling Cold War memorabilia. You will find stamps, banknotes, pins, propaganda posters, and even steel mugs from Soviet times. Score great deals on matryoshkas , Russian nesting dolls; khokhloma , hand-painted wooden handicrafts; and Baltic amber jewelry. Don’t miss contemporary twists on traditional Russian gifts, such as nesting dolls of modern politicians and music boxes shaped like Orthodox cathedrals. For a market of its popularity, Vernisazh prices are a steal and you can haggle without hesitation. Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit.

1 p.m. By now, you have probably got the sense that there is more to see in Moscow than time to see it. So pick what you crave most. Want more of Orthodox churches? Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Novodevichy Convent , which was once used by the women of the Tsar’s family. Still looking for souvenirs and gifts? Make your way to Stari Arbat (Old Arbat), a historical cobblestone street of shops and restaurants. Want to delve deeper into Russian history? Visit the State Historical Museum on the Red Square. A Cold War buff? The Bunker 42 Museum located 18 floors below Taganskaya metro was a strategic command center and an anti-nuclear shelter. A fan of Russian literature? Check out the Gogol House and the Bulgakov Museum . Want another serving of art? Try the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Garage Museum .

8 p.m. End your stay in Moscow with a nice meal. Café Pushkin offers antique interiors, delicious Russian dishes, and five-star service. Even if you don’t eat here, grab a cup of the Pushkin chai, a signature Earl Grey blend with citrusy overtones. For casual fare, go to Varenichnaya (multiple locations), which has an extensive menu of Russian dishes and decor straight out of a Soviet poster. Mari Vanna (multiple locations) is another choice Russian chain.

Moscow is also a great place to try the food from other Soviet states. Head to Khachapuri to try the namesake khachapuri , Georgian stuffed-cheese bread. For authentic Uzbek plov , make a reservation at Uzbekistan . Want to keep enjoying the outdoors? Bar Strelka is a trendy spot with great views, excellent food, and a dance floor to keep the night going .
