12 Top Things to Do on a Long Layover at LAX

Sometimes when you're crossing the globe and have to change planes at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), you end up with a long layover . With as few as several hours to spend between flights, you can have a bit of fun and maximize your stay in sunny southern California.

There's plenty to do at an airport the size of LAX. If you have a boarding pass for a same-day flight, you can go explore any terminal, including the renovated Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT), which has been beautifully updated and has more amenities than any other terminal.

You can entertain yourself there with fine restaurants and shopping for a few hours without ever leaving the terminal. And, if you have more time you can head out to explore the city or beaches and make it back in time to board your next flight feeling refreshed, with a few California memories to add to your travel experiences.

Dine on Classy International Cuisine

Head to Terminal B, the Tom Bradley International Terminal. A destination in itself, the terminal resembles a beautiful upscale shopping mall with amazing multimedia public art and dining venues from some of the city's most popular restaurants. Try Chaya Sushi for upscale sushi and Japanese food, or live it up at the Petrossian Caviar and Champagne Bar. This terminal is also home to an outpost of an L.A. favorite, Umami Burger. 

Dine Local at Airport Terminal 3

While not as upscale as the Tom Bradley International Terminal, the restaurants at Terminal 3 will give you a taste of local cuisine. Grab a brew at Ashland Hill, a Santa Monica gastropub with a focus on craft beer and pub food (Ashland Hill is also located in Terminal 7). Sample Mezcal and Mexican food at La Familia or refresh with a milkshake, breakfast sandwich or burger at Shake Shack, an L.A. favorite.

Hit the Beach

If you have time to leave the airport and then go through security again before your next flight you'll be happy to know that the Los Angeles International Airport is adjacent to Dockweiler Beach , a very long strip of beach with few amenities.

If you have less than four hours and are craving some beach time, this is probably your best bet, but be sure to schedule a taxi or car service to pick you up at the beach in time to get back to the airport. 

If you have just a little more time, it costs just a couple dollars more to get down to Manhattan Beach , the nearest beach that also has shopping and restaurants, and for just a little more, you can take a cab north to Venice Beach or Santa Monica Beach . All three of these beaches have plenty of sand, waves, and beach activities to leave you feeling refreshed and ready for your next flight.

Take a Shopping Excursion

If you have more than four hours and want to experience some super high-end shopping in LA, arrange a car service for the duration of your layover.

Your driver can pick you up at LAX and whisk you away to funky Abbott Kinney Boulevard in Venice; Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica; Rodeo Drive; the Beverly Center; the Grove; or anywhere else you'd like to go, without having to worry about directions, parking, where to put your packages between shops or being on time to get back to the airport and check another bag full of your shopping finds.

If you want to shop close to LAX, there's a two-block stretch of shops just north of the airport on Sepulveda Boulevard. This stretch is home to more standard stores such as Kohl's, Ross, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Bed Bath & Beyond, and more.

Tour Los Angeles

You can see much of the city during your layover by taking the Starline Hop-On, Hop-Off tour , which has three routes and more than 50 tours, one of which stops at the Concourse Hotel next to LAX .

If you have four hours or more during the day, you can hop on and off up to Marina del Rey, Venice, and Santa Monica. If you have all day, you can take an additional loop over to Hollywood. Each of the narrated tour loops takes about two hours if you remain on the bus.

LA City Tours offers special bus tours for LAX passengers. The layover tours include a tour of LA plus celebrity homes and beaches (6 Hours with 5 Stops). They pick up at the LAX Terminal departure level. 

Play Some Golf

The Westchester Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course just north of LAX airport. Tee times run from before dawn to early evening and vary by season. Prices are according to tee time and club rentals are available. You don't even have to take the time to play 9 or 18 holes as there is a 58-stall driving range and practice area. If you've never golfed before, make an appointment with a golf pro for instruction.

Eat Iconic L.A. Fast Food

Some of L.A.'s most popular fast food is super close to LAX, making for an easy and quick meal. For the burger junkie, there's an In-N-Out Burger location about a 20-minute walk from Terminal 1. Famous for their thin patty burgers and iconic "Animal Style" fries, this particular In-N-Out location affords customers a great view of planes taking off and landing.

The walk may not be the best due to roadways and on-ramps, so many just take a ride-share or taxi. Some even have hopped on the free shuttle for  The Parking Spot , an offsite parking structure across from the In-N-Out Burger (although that's not sanctioned by the business or LAX).

Other favorites in the area include the 24-hour Randy's Donut , which is famous for the giant donut out front, and Tito's Tacos , a 20-minute drive away in Culver City.

Visit the Flight Path Museum

Fans of aviation can visit the Flight Path Museum and Learning Center to see models, photographs, uniforms and other artifacts highlighting the role of the airline industry in the history of Southern California. It's a small museum so a visit shouldn't take more than an hour or so. While the museum is on airport property, getting there can be tricky so request a ride-share or a taxi in advance. 

Visit the Proud Bird Food Bazaar

The Proud Bird is a large, unique food bazaar located on Aviation and 111th Street on airport property. It has six kitchens open for all three meals and incredible patio where you can dine as planes land and take off. The Proud Bird's name was taken from the 1960s Continental Airlines tag line, “The Proud Bird with the Golden Tail.”

Like the Flight Path Museum, it can be tricky to get to and will require a brief ride-share or taxi ride. Once you're there, you'll love the open, airy space, featuring a replica of a P-40 Flying Tiger plane. The Proud Bird also is a museum of sorts and houses memorabilia from the original Proud Bird restaurant and interactive aviation exhibits.

Relax with a Spa Treatment

If you need to relax or get the kinks out after sitting long hours in a plane with more of the same to come, stop in at  XpressSpa , located in Terminal B or Terminal 5. XpressSpa offers affordable massages and other refreshing services including haircuts, manicures, and even a quick shower.

Even if you don't want to spring for a full-on massage, just a quick arm or neck massage can be all you need to rejuvenate you in time for your next flight.

Peruse the Public Art

Art lovers will find an impressive collection of art throughout LAX. You'll find art, including paintings and sculptures located in Terminals 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and, of course, the TBIT. Some exhibits rotate or change so there is always something new to see, with up to 20 exhibits presented each year.

In addition to the visual arts, the airport provides live music and seasonal entertainment for travelers. 

Say Hello to Hollywood

If you want to say you've been to Hollywood, you can get there via the  FlyAway bus service costing $8 each way. The bus brings you just one block south of Hollywood Boulevard. Or, you can take a taxi or ride-share and enjoy several hours of iconic sightseeing including the TCL Chinese Theatre and star-studded Walk of Fame.

6 hour layover in Los Angeles

Six hours is cutting it fine for a city adventure, especially when you have to include collecting your bags, clearing customs, and then storing your luggage. Thankfully, if you jump the Metro green line to the Douglas stop and then catch a 109 bus , you can be at Manhattan Beach in just over twenty minutes.

This cool oceanside suburb offers plenty for the traveler with a limited amount of time to play with. The whole town is fronted by a cycle track running along the coast. Overlooking that are some fabulous beachfront homes, so simply strolling and admiring the houses is going to be a pleasant way to pass some time.

In addition to that, there is the Manhattan Pier to walk down. Finally, the local center offers quaint shops and coffee bars as well as some nice restaurants and a couple of pubs. 

• On a short Los Angeles layover like this, don’t forget to allow time for clearing security when you get back to the airport. At LAX it is notoriously slow.
• Manhattan Beach has enough to fill your time and is easily accessible.
• Even on a short stop, you will want to free yourself from having to look after suitcases, so use a Los Angeles luggage storage service.

10 hour layover in Los Angeles

With a few extra hours to play with before you make your connection, you can think about traveling further afield after storing your bags. Santa Monica can easily be reached by taxi and was recently rated by National Geographic as one of the top ten beach cities in the world.

There is plenty to do on the beach including dining and a visit to the pier which has one of the few surviving pier-based amusement parks in the US. If the beach isn’t your thing, or the generally reliable weather turns against you, there is still plenty to keep you occupied in this lovely city.

If you are an art enthusiast, consider dropping in at the Bergamot where you will find more than thirty galleries to browse. Most of them contain contemporary art by local artists.   

Third Street Promenade is popular for shoppers but you would be better off heading to Montana Avenue if you are looking for something more unique than the usual chain store offerings. This street is filled with small boutiques offering high-end shopping and plenty of eateries.

• Don’t let that extra couple of hours lull you into thinking you have a lot of time on your hands, and remember to allow for rush hour traffic.
• Santa Monica offers something for everyone, so it makes a great destination even if you are traveling with kids.

12 hour layover in Los Angeles

Hollywood is so renowned that you will regret not visiting if you are in the vicinity and have some time on your hands. It is 17 miles from LAX to Hollywood and you have all of the transport options available, including tram, metro, and bus. Any combination of these will normally take you no more than an hour and a half.

Once in Hollywood, you will be spoiled for choice and so you should consider in advance what your priorities are. You will almost definitely want to walk along at least some of the Hollywood Walk of Fame , even if just to say that you have been there. 

With the amount of time you have on your hands, you will not be able to do everything, but here are some of the options to consider. Universal Studios tours are famous for showing visitors behind the scenes of some of the most well-known blockbuster films. The Museum of Illusions offers some unusual photo opportunities, while Madame Tussauds in Hollywood claims to be the only wax museum featuring only celebrities.

• The full extent of what is on offer in Hollywood is almost endless, so do some research before visiting.
• Even if you opt for a tour, be sure to check what time you will be dropped off so that you can get back to LAX without any stress.

24 hour layover in Los Angeles

With an overnight layover in the City of Angels, you can start to think about exploring LA more deeply. Don’t forget to choose both your hotel and the sites you wish to visit around your connecting flight. LA is an enormous city and it can be easy to find yourself a long way from LAX.

Venice Beach is one of the most iconic beaches in LA and a great place to grab an early morning coffee and a bagel. Wander along to Muscle Beach to watch the fitness fanatics shamelessly pumping iron or hire a bike and cruise up the coast.

The city teems with museums but if you are an art buff, you will want to visit the Los Angeles County Art Museum which is the largest museum in the western United States. It contains a broad spectrum of exhibits ranging from ancient art through to modern and including photographic halls. 

For a very different museum visit, you might prefer to do a tour of the USS Iowa now moored at the Port of Los Angeles . Launched in 1942, this battleship saw service in WW II, Korea and the Cold War before being turned into a museum.

Hello there,

my friends and I will have a layover at LAX lasting for 12 hours. As u may guess, we will have all our luggage with us.

Or any other options around the airport without risking getting stuck in the infamous LA's traffic jams? I know it firsthand. A nice shopping center do do some shopping, with cafes and relaxing area, just to chill out?

We do not want to spend the whole time on the benches in the terminal. The money is not the issue here, we're just ready to pay about any reasonable price.

I saw H Hotel, Residence Inn and Homewood Suites for the day I checked. All are very close to LAX (just outside the entrance), have shuttles and are very nice places.

The Belamar Hotel is on that list. Keep your luggage in your room. Walk across the street to Manhattan Village Mall or to El Segundo Plaza Mall across from that. Lots of outside dining places at both.

The LAX area is pretty dull. Nowhere to walk to.

There is an inside joke among locals in Los Angeles — their airport is always under construction.

With over 75 million passengers last year, Los Angeles International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country. With nine passenger terminals it holds the record for most terminals in the world , according to travel deal platform Going.

In 2017, LAX began an ambitious $30 billion renovation to redesign the airport experience . Although the upgrades aren’t entirely finished — the airport expects the project could end in 2030 — the completed renovations have already made LAX a much more enjoyable place to be.

Which is surprising for anyone from Los Angeles to admit.

For those on a long layover after landing in the City of Angels, hitting the streets might be tempting. But for any tourist unfamiliar with Los Angeles, between the traffic, the sprawling landscape and an often-long Transportation Security Administration line awaiting your return, it’s very easy to lose track of time and come dangerously close to missing a flight. 

Redditors agree the safest sight to see is the In-N-Out down the street. Or there’s the LAX-adjacent food hall Proud Bird , for comfort food and cold beer.

However, travelers on an LAX layover are in luck: They don’t need to leave the airport at all to make the most of their short stint in California. 

The renovation project has connected all nine LAX terminals for the first time. If there are a few extra hours between flights, travelers can access any airport area with a brisk walk. From end to end, terminals 1 through 8 — including the Tom Bradley International Terminal, aka Terminal B, between terminals 3 and 4 — the walk is a little over 2 miles and takes about 35 minutes. 

Along the way, tucked within the sprawling airport, are places for peace and relaxation, if you know where to look.

Best views of coastal tarmacs

The best location for  plane spotting at LAX is the Delta Sky Club. But this year, Delta updated its lounge policies and even some elite status holders can’t enter without booking an upgraded class.

For all of us in economy, those views might be off-limits. But don’t worry — there are plenty of opportune places to watch the planes go by.

Plane spotters can find views of different airfields between Terminal 3 and Terminal 4. The indoor lookout is perfect for catching takeoffs and landings.

Before security, passengers can catch also views of the iconic Theme Building between terminals 1 and 2. 

The space-age landmark has become LAX’s most famous feature, constantly appearing in movies and TV shows. The four-legged, modern building was constructed over 60 years ago and the Los Angeles City Council designated it a historical monument in 1992.

LAX invested in eateries with celebrity pull, like Ludacris’ Chicken and Beer and The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck . But if you can’t step out of the airport for some of Los Angeles’ more iconic eats, you can still find them inside the airport.

In 1991,  Urth Caffé opened its doors in Manhattan Beach. The food has made it an Instagram-worthy mecca, often with lines wrapped around the corner for its “health-conscious approach,” and there are now locations all over Southern California. The airport menu of Urth Caffé & Bar is a bit limited, but its breakfast items are still worth a try.

The giant doughnut statue that locals and tourists easily recognize at Randy’s Donuts in Inglewood made its way inside Terminal 7 in 2023, as a miniature version. Made fresh daily, the doughnuts are delivered from the original location.

While See’s Candies has expanded to other parts of the country, its original shop opened in Los Angeles in 1921 , and more than half of the company’s stores are still in California. There are several See’s Candies outposts in LAX. A great souvenir to bring home is the Milk California Brittle, made with California almonds and wrapped in milk chocolate. 

The Grove, a reputable outdoor mall in Los Angeles, has a longstanding  Farmers Market that’s charmed locals for nearly a century. There’s a mini version inside LAX with a variety of meals, snacks, coffee, wine and tea, plus a relief that’s an homage to the market’s distinguished clock tower.

Like other airports in the state , LAX remakes its corridors into a curated museum.

One of the more captivating pieces is a 94-foot-long, hand-painted mural between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 called “Bird’s Eye View.” Painted by Erin Miller Wray, the mural reenacts when a plane prepares for landing. With bright colors and geometric shapes, the mural reveals itself deeper with a closer look, but after stepping back, you start to see the bigger picture. 

The mixed-media piece “Awake in the Dream” by Chenhung Chen uses drawings and sculptures to convey information about the Taoist concept of chi and the artist’s beliefs about nature. Chen took wires and electrical conduits and stapled, wove, bound and crocheted them into a fresher outlook.

Killing time in LA

Forgot to pack an Xbox or a PlayStation? Make your way to one of the Gameway lounges. The premium video game lounges are in Terminal 3 and Terminal 6. Make a reservation to settle into the leather gaming chairs and dig into popular titles like Fortnite, FIFA, Madden, Call of Duty and Minecraft.

If you’re more interested in relaxing after a long flight, LAX travelers can check into a Be Relax Spa . Located in Terminal 1 and Terminal B, the spas offer massages, manicures, pedicures and facials. Be Relax recommends making appointments, but it also accepts walk-ins.

Although LAX has been making improvements, more projects are still on the way, such as the highly anticipated  Automated People Mover train system — an over-2-mile elevated guideway. 

The seemingly never-ending construction is expected to wrap up in a few years and, once complete, the new LAX may challenge its rotten reputation as one of the worst airports in the country .
