Q. Which is the best time to visit Darjeeling? A. The spring and the fall months are the best to visit Darjeeling. The spring season in Darjeeling lasts between March and April when the weather oscillates from pleasant to nippy. You have clear blue skies and occasional strong winds. But it is the time of the year when the hill station’s abundant magnolia and rhododendron jungles are in flower, splashing the wilderness in a riot of pinks and purples. It is the best time of the year to go on treks and venture inside the pristine Singalila National Park and take in a grand panorama of the Everest and Khangchendzonga. You get good views from Tiger Hill too, considering you travel to it at the break of dawn to view the sunrise over the majestic Himalayan ranges. You can also choose an autumn visit to Darjeeling between October and November when the temperature ranges between 6 and 18 degree Celsius. The monsoon rains are now a thing of past and fall is slowly rolling in. The mist has cleared once more and you can view the Himalayan ranges in their full glory. The treks open up once more and tourist activity begins to set in. Hotel prices can be bullish at this time of the year. Q. What is Tiger Hill in Darjeeling famous for? A. To catch a sunrise over the Tiger Hills in Darjeeling is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It opens you up to the fascinating 250 kilometre stretch of the Himalayas which comprises Khangchendzonga at 28,208 foot and Mount Everest at 29,028 foot among the two of the five highest peaks in the world. Wake up in the small hours and ride a jeep to the Tiger Hill to behold this spectacle. The Hill at an elevation of 8497 foot is about 11 kilometre south of Darjeeling above Ghum. Crammed with tourists, come in for the best views in either spring or fall. Jeeps depart from Darjeeling town centre at about 04:00 am, leading to endless traffic snarls. You could even sign up for a sunrise trip which makes stops at the picturesque Batasia Loop and a monastery in Ghum as you wind your way back, down the hill and into Darjeeling. Q. Which is a popular tea estate in Darjeeling? A. The Happy Valley Tea Estate, established in 1854, sprawled on the northwestern tip of Darjeeling is a great place to gain some insight on the tea-making process. Here you will be familiarised with the method of producing tea, from plucking, drying to processing. You can watch the process first-hand between March and November, the tea plucking and producing season. A friendly staff would usher you around the estate and show you the workings of a tea factory. Take in the exotic aromas and understand the process of production, right from withering, rolling, fermenting to drying. It is a great opportunity to taste an array of special teas, from black, green to white and also to find out that all the brews, regardless of the their colour, come from the same tea leaf. Head up to Bhanu Bhawan in Darjeeling town centre and ride the free shuttle van that takes you about a kilometre northwest where you need to turn off on Lebong Cart Road and then down a zigzag track for half a kilometre to the tea plantation. The van rides are available from 09:30 am onwards. Q. Which is the nearest airport to Darjeeling? A. As you scour Darjeeling packages , you must remember the proximity of the hill station to the nearest airport in the state. The Bagdogra International Airport in Siliguri is the airport closest to Darjeeling about 70 kilometre away. The drive through the winding hilly roads takes around 2.5 hours. There is a pre-paid taxi booth at the airport run by the Siliguri Metropolitan Police open till until 07:00 pm, and this is the only form of official private transport facility available from the airport other than the state buses that ply from the nearby bus stand. Q. Which is the nearest railway station to Darjeeling? A. There is no dearth of Darjeeling tour packages , but very few that do justice to the destination and the commute it warrants. The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station which serves Siliguri city and is the port of entry to the seven north-eastern states, is the closest railway station to Darjeeling at about 93 kilometre. A taxi ride from NJP to Darjeeling takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes. There are ample shared jeeps and taxis at the New Jalpaiguri station available at a decent frequency to get you to Darjeeling. Or you can head to the nearest bus stand in Siliguri to avail a bus to Darjeeling. Else if you have more time at your hands opt for the toy train journey between Siliguri and Darjeeling that takes around 7 hours skirting brilliant mountain scenery all along the Hill Carter Road. Q. What is the route of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway? A. Make sure one of the Darjeeling travel packages you settle for comes with a ride aboard this world-heritage toy train. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway came into being in 1881 and is about 88 kilometre long winding its way through New Jalpaiguri along Hill Carter Road all the way to Darjeeling. In its run it scales the 328 foot of NJP to 7,218 foot of Darjeeling through its diesel locomotives. From Darjeeling, the toy train services extend to Ghum, the highest railway station in the country. The prominent stops on the NJP to Darjeeling route aboard the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway include Siliguri Junction, Rangtong, Sukna, Tindharia, Mahanadi, Sonada, Tung, Ghum, and finally Darjeeling. Q. What is the local mode of transport in Darjeeling? A. While walking remains the most popular way of commuting short distances, there is no long lineup of auto-rickshaws and taxis to take you from one part of the hill station to the other. In fact there are several areas around the Mall (Chowrasta) that are accessible only to pedestrians. You can, however, rely on reserved or shared taxis and public buses for covering distances within the city limits. The shares taxis are a cheaper mode of commuting and connect Darjeeling to Gangtok, Kalimpong, New Jalpaiguri, Mirik, Siliguri, and Kurseong. Shared taxis are typically made of jeeps that accommodate about 10 passengers on a single ride. Q. Are there sufficient ATMs in Darjeeling? A. You better be cash-rich if you are travelling within Darjeeling and the surrounding Kalimpong, Ghum or Mirik. The few ATMs around are either cash-starved or very simply out of order. Some that are in mint condition have long queues outside of them. So, it is better to rely on your cash reserves for your travels within Darjeeling and in its vicinity. Some places have now begun to accept e-wallets, but not so much cards, whether it is credit or debit cards. And in local markets too and at restaurants you are expected to make your payment in cash. Q. What is the local language of Darjeeling? A. While Bengali is the official and easily the most widely-spoken language of the hill station, Nepali has emerged as a close second among the prevailing languages. The refugee population largely speaks Tibetan outside of other local languages of the tribal population of Darjeeling. But since it also thrives on tourism and has catered to tourists for a significant period of time, and also owing to its colonial heritage, English is spoken and understood by the local population. Particularly at its tourists centres, restaurants and hotels, English is easily followed. Q. From where can I avail a taxi in Darjeeling? A. Head to the Upper Club-side taxi stand which is right below the Planter’s Club on Gandhi Road. There are kiosks here operated by the local taxi association which offer private taxis at regulated rates. The other point is the Lower Club-side taxi stand on Laden-La Road adjacent to the Gandhi Road traffic control junction, and the Motor Stand on Lebong Cart Road close to Chowk Bazaar. The shared taxis can be flagged down from any point on the road and they will stop for you only if they have any vacant seats on-board. Shared taxis are available between 07:00 am and 03:00 pm. Any big luggage you might be carrying will be tied to the roof of the vehicle.

Darjeeling Tour Packages

best darjeeling tour package

Every place has something special to offer travellers and this holds true for Darjeeling as well. Nestling in north-east India, the chilly hamlet is a refuge for nature lovers and travellers who are looking for an escape from hectic schedules. Offering travellers a chance to rejuvenate and recharge, the abundant natural beauty of Darjeeling works like an antidote.

Lush greenery, verdant fields, rolling hills and inviting tea plantations – we are all familiar with the stunning landscape of Darjeeling and the desire to explore it. And since everything about Darjeeling spells calm and peace, it’s best to book Darjeeling tour packages to explore the city and save yourself the trouble of planning and numerous bookings. Darjeeling tour packages can be completely customised to suit your travel preferences and your budget, so you can travel hassle-free.

An erstwhile summer capital, Darjeeling has always been one of India’s most popular hill stations. Famous across the world for producing the purest and best teas, the hilly hamlet is much more than just a beautiful retreat. One of the most popular attractions in Darjeeling tour packages is the toy train. Established in the year 1881, the train is still operational and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers travellers mesmerising and almost surreal views of the hilly hamlet. But that’s not all, Darjeeling tour packages also ensure that travellers can explore the history, culture and way of life in Darjeeling through enthralling sightseeing tours.

Located in West Bengal, one can reach Darjeeling by train or road. We definitely recommend booking Darjeeling tour packages which include transport from the closest airport in Bagdogra or the railway station in New Jalpaiguri. For those who are travelling from Kolkata, Darjeeling is about 700km away. Ensure that your transport is included in Darjeeling tour packages, so you can prepare for a memorable road trip from Bagdogra or a mesmerising train journey from New Jalpaiguri.

Darjeeling Highlights

Darjeeling is packed with experiences that ensure travellers keep coming back for more. From historical monuments, tea gardens, cable car rides to national parks, museums and shopping hubs - the small hilly hamlet promises a plethora of places to see and things to do.

If you’d like to explore the hill station at a comfortable pace, we suggest booking Darjeeling tour packages which give you at least five days in town. Most hotels in Darjeeling are located around the mall or the city centre and you’ll find that the area tends to get a little crowded. If you are looking for a quiet vacation, we recommend staying a little further from the city centre.

The first attraction in most Darjeeling tour packages is a joy ride aboard the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or as locals refer to it, Darjeeling toy train. The train runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling and travellers vouch that this is the best way to experience the picturesque hilly hamlet. But for travellers who have just arrived in Darjeeling, we do recommend the shorter joyride between Darjeeling and Ghum. A two-hour round trip, it’s one of the most popular experiences which is part of Darjeeling tour packages and is highly recommended by travellers. Offering one uninterrupted views of the small town and surrounding mountains, you’ll never take your eyes off the window. The train stops for some time at Batasia Loop, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Museum and War Memorial after which it finally stops at Ghum which is the highest altitude station on the DHR track.

Another popular attraction in Darjeeling tour packages is Tiger Hill. One of the most visited tourist attractions in Darjeeling, Tiger Hill offers breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga. In fact, most travellers head to Tiger Hill before sunrise to take in the spellbinding views. Imagine welcoming a new day in the midst of dreamy mountains, clear blue skies and among fellow travellers who know precisely how valuable the moment is. Typically sunrise tours for Tiger Hill are included in Darjeeling tour packages and also includes transport. If you are travelling on a budget, it’s best to book a seat in shared taxis which will take you to the base of the hill for a mere Rs.200. It’s a short climb from the parking lot to Tiger Hill so if you are travelling with children or elderly, we’d recommend you to be a little careful.

Batasia Loop is one of the most popular attractions in Darjeeling tour packages and travellers must ensure that they don’t miss it. An integral part of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the loop is an example of brilliant engineering and design skills. The loop offers unmatched and unforgettable views of town and the lush mountains.

Is there a better way to admire the mesmerising beauty of Darjeeling than from a great vantage point mid-air? We think not. Darjeeling tour packages include a cable car ride which is operated by Darjeeling Ropeway. Offering travellers a magical experience, this is one of the best ways to admire Darjeeling’s landscape and also add some adventure to an otherwise laidback trip. The trip begins in Singamari and ends at Singla Bazaar. One can view a plethora of tea estates that Darjeeling is known for as well as an array of waterfalls and small creeks. There is a small mountain cafe at the end of the ride where you can enjoy a hot cup of Darjeeling tea and hot steaming momos. If you are travelling with children, this cable car ride should be one of the top activities in your Darjeeling tour packages.

For wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, a visit to Nightingale Park is a great attraction to include in Darjeeling tour packages. It’s popular among tourists for clear views of the Kanchenjunga ranges and also to enjoy the serenity the hilly hamlet offers. Earlier known as the Shrubbery, the park was a private garden for Sir Thomas Tartan’s Bungalow during the British era. The park has a majestic statue of Lord Shiva and a musical fountain which is popular among little ones.

Rock Garden is a picnic spot which is part of Darjeeling tour packages and is popular among locals and travellers. Known for the stunning natural waterfall, Chunnu, the best time to visit the garden is during the day. Dotted with well-maintained lush gardens, one can spend time admiring the variety of flowers or head to one of the nearby tea-estates for a tour. We recommend keeping aside at least a couple of hours for the Rock Garden. Do remember to wear a sturdy pair of shoes since it’s a huge garden.

Singalila National Park is another attraction which is included in most Darjeeling tour packages. A must for wildlife enthusiasts, it’s one of the highest national parks in West Bengal and is known for the variety of fauna and flora. Dotted with rhododendron forests, the national park is surrounded by the Himalayas and one can expect to catch some unforgettable views from vantage points. Home to the Red Panda and the Himalayan Black Bear, the best way to explore the park is with the help of a guide. For those who can’t do without a trekking excursion, the park has umpteen marked trains which are a must-try. The trek can be slightly challenging so we strongly recommend you head out with a guide who is familiar with the terrain.

Located 50km away from Darjeeling is the unmissable quaint hamlet of Kalimpong. One can customise Darjeeling tour packages to include a trip to Kalimpong – trust us, you won’t regret it. Overlooking the Teesta Valley, Kalimpong is full of Buddhist monasteries, archaic churches and Bhutanese temples which offer one a peek into the historical journey of the city. We recommend spending at least a couple of days here to truly enjoy the beauty of the hill station.

Darjeeling Travel Blogs

The most important thing to remember when booking Darjeeling tour packages is the best time to visit Darjeeling. As is the case with all hill stations, the wrong season can mess up travel plans and itineraries forcing you to rethink your decision. The best way to know more about the best time to visit and places to see is by speaking to fellow travellers.

At Tripoto, we have a repository of travel experiences shared by travellers who have experienced the beauty of Darjeeling and the plethora of experiences it offers. We recommending give the below a read through before booking Darjeeling tour packages.

“Lover's meet viewpoint is located in Trinchuley village in Darjeeling. The view of the river Great Rangeet meeting Teesta is a treat to the eye for all the nature lovers. It's a point where the dark green crystal clear waters of the river Rangeet meets the mountain stream of the Teesta river at a point named "Triveni".” – Rachael Pereira

“The Japanese Peace Pagoda is situated in a very peaceful corner of the hills, away from the humdrum of the touristic town. The pagoda is coloured white, symbolising peace. All through the pagoda intricate artwork representing various stages of Lord Budhha’s life is carved. The Japanese temple adjacent to the Pagoda contains the main prayer hall. If you arrive at the right time there is a high chance you may catch the monks offering prayer while playing authentic Tibetan musical instruments.” – Tania Banerjee

“I took window seat and 10 am in the morning after few inspections and clearance from the maintenance team finally the journey started to a picturesque landscape, whistling train goes on zig zag tracks through small villages, shops you will be greeted by locals and kids waving and smiling at you.the train covers a total roundtrip distance of 14 kms from Darjeeling to Ghum railway station in 2 hours with a hop at Batasia loop and a tour to Ghum museum.” Ranjan Singh

Darjeeling for Couples and Family

Darjeeling is an ideal vacation spot for couples since it offers one a refuge from chaotic city life. With many places to see and things to do, you can spend anywhere between four to seven days exploring the hilly hamlet. For those who enjoy a laidback vacation, the hilly hamlet is home to a number of natural retreats including gardens, national parks and trekking trails.

The best time to visit Darjeeling is between the months of April and July just before monsoon hits. We also recommend booking Darjeeling tour packages which are customised for couples since they include accommodation, transport and local sightseeing tours.

On the other hand, Darjeeling tour packages which are customised for a family vacation include a number of things which all members of the family can enjoy. For those who are travelling with the elderly, you must keep in mind that the weather is a little severe, especially during the winter. It’s also best to include transport for all local sightseeing tours in advance else you’ll be paying far more on last-minute bookings.

Darjeeling Weather and Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Darjeeling and book Darjeeling tour packages is between the months of March and July when day temperatures are pleasant and nights are cool. It’s also when the hill station is enveloped in lush greenery and you can catch a glimpse of the mighty Kanchenjunga ranges.

For those who are travelling on a budget, we recommend visiting in September since it’s the time before the winter tourist season begins. Darjeeling tour packages are the cheapest during monsoon months but we recommend avoiding travel during this time. The rains are heavy and one may experience frequent landslides.

Winter is a great time to book Darjeeling tour packages since the weather is beautiful, especially for those who enjoy winter. The temperature during the day is pleasant and nights are cold giving you an experience of classic hill station weather.

Darjeeling Local Cuisine

Local cuisine in Darjeeling is influenced by Nepali, Bengali and Tibetan cuisines. Rice and potatoes are the main ingredients which are used in most local dishes including kwati , phambi, gundruk, Shyaa phaley and alu dhum . But the most popular local dishes here are momos and pork curry.

We suggest heading to the main bazaar for a taste of local cuisine. On the other hand, if you don’t enjoy local cuisines, the city’s restaurants offer a multi-cuisine menu including Mughal, Chinese, Dalle and Italian.

Darjeeling Culture

Lepchas, or Rongpa (the ravine people), as they like to be called, were the original occupants of the Darjeeling Hills. Despite having an unknown origin, they clearly have Mongolian features. The Khampas, a Lepcha subgroup, are more swashbuckling and warrior-like than their meek relatives. Recent Tibetan immigrants are known as Khampas.

The majority of the population in the Hills are Gorkhas. They have a variety of dialects and are a hardworking, entrepreneurial race. The British and Indian forces offered employment and protection to the short Mongolian-type Gorkhas of Nepal, who are known for their military skill worldwide and were the first to get the coveted Victoria Cross. The Khukri, a curved ornamental knife, is the standard weapon carried by them.

The Newars, better known as Sherpas around the world, are also present in the population. They are renowned for their bravery, tenacity, and sure-footedness, as well as for their invaluable contributions to mountaineering. The Bhutias are classified into Tibetan, Bhutanese, Dharma, and Sikkimese. They are also widely present in the Hills, with a larger proportion coming from the Siliguri region of Bengal.

Singing and playing musical instruments are among the most popular pastimes in Darjeeling, which is known as a haven for music and music enthusiasts. The people take great pleasure in following their traditions and the significance of music in their social and cultural lives. The heart of Nepali rock music is in Darjeeling, and the younger generation of the twenty-first century also likes western music. Football and cricket are Darjeeling's two sports of liking.

Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity are the three main religions practised in Darjeeling, while Nepali, Gorkha, Tibetan, Hindi, Bengali, and English are the languages that are most frequently heard there. Two important industries that contribute significantly to Darjeeling's economy are the tourism and tea industries.

Darjeeling Festivals

There are regional festivities specific to this area, in addition to Durga Puja, Diwali, Saraswati Puja, Shivratri, etc. While the Tibetans hold their Devil Dances to celebrate their New Year in their monasteries from the last week of February to March, the Lepchas and Bhutias celebrate the New Year in January.

The snake or dragon dances twist through the streets, just like in Chinese tradition. There are strong folk dances, and the males take part in the Libus' "Chabrung," the Tamangs' "Damfu," and the electrifying Maruni, which is the most well-known of them all. Gay folk songs like "Jhowre," which is about the lover, and "Juhari," which is about a pair who is in love, fill the air.

Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival

The Darjeeling Tea Festival, held in November or December, draws visitors from all over the world. The event features tasting sessions in addition to a presentation and exhibition on tea culture. Tea enthusiasts will learn about the history of tea and become familiar with it.

What Our Customer Says About WeCare Holidays

We booked a trip from we care holidays for mid march 2022 via travel triangle. They sent the quote along with other tour operators but the itinerary provided by them suited us best. Before zeroing down to final selection I had multiple chats with Ms. Alka chetri and she was always helpful and suggested positively. Based on her suggestion we changed our plans a bit and it was really worthy. Alka has been really helpful while booking the trip. on reaching the destination Mr. Keshav and Mr. Ajay were communicating well to help us out. All 3 drivers provided to us were great. Subba, Suran and specially Pema, all were very skilled and pleasant. Specially Pema got some really good driving skills. The hotels provided to us were good and satisfied our needs in general though we had a bit of issue for room no.110, udaan alpine village resot as there was no mobile nor any wifi reception, in that room. View was also a bit restricted from that room. Overall it was a lovely experience and we will recommend everyone to go for them.

Big thank you from all of us @ we care holidays for an enjoyable and memorable Gangtok-pelling- Darjeeling holiday.. Right from Alka who took care of all the necessary things in itenary, patiently explained the same and was open to suggestions and modifications in the travel plans, to all the drivers who safely took a group of 7 including kids and senior citizens. They were excellent guides , never rushed us at sites we were interested in spending time, they made the holidays thoroughly wonderful .. Special mention to Mr. Pema, Mr.Bhanu, we have already booked them for our next Sikkim visit! The hotels were good, staff courteous with neat and clean rooms and warm and healthy food especially at Gangtok-Blueberry Banquet and Spa, and more so at Pelling- Blueben Alpine. I would like to thank Mr. Nandan for his warm hospitality especially for taking care of my mum who fell ill for a couple of days at pelling, he went out of his way for her comfort and made sure the rest of us could proceed with the itenary. I could keep going on about all the good things in the eight days of holidays but wish to end saying it was worth every penny and second spent ! Thank you all for a truly wonderful experience

Travel was planned out very well. every one was very helpful, the cordinator sharmaji, the supervisor Abhijit sir, above all Travel planner, Radha start to finish was very helpful. She was always there to help and advice any time, morning to night. I have never met such an extraordinary guide. Hotels were planned out well, except Darjeeling, but the staff's at that hotel were very nice. Vehicles provided to us were very good and the drivers Bala Krishna, Pritam from sikkim were very knoweldegable of the place and kind, understanding. They made the journey memorable.

Thank You We Care holidays team for your wonderful organisation. We recently visited Sikkim from Chennai, TN. We don't know Hindi. They arranged for us English speaking drivers which were very helpful to us. All the drivers were polite and humble. We didn't have the feeling that we are travelling to the northeast. Special thanks to Radha our travel agent, Who was in touch with us for nearly 2 years and organised a wonderful trip for us and was in contact with us for the entire trip whenever we needed help from her. Lovely person to organise a trip for us. Thanks for all Your support Radha, You are the best. All the accommodation and food provided was great. Talking about the Sikkim is a must-visit place in India. Nature's beauty at its best. Mountains, snow, etc. Love Sikkim people, they are very polite and humble. Loved Sikkim.
