A Look At The Candidates For The 2025 Lions Captaincy

A Look At The Candidates For The 2025 Lions Captaincy

The race to be the 2025 Lions captain is the toughest to predict in many years, as we enter into a new generation without the likes of Alun Wyn Jones and Johnny Sexton.

Andy Farrell is yet to confirm his pick for Ireland's next captain, while Owen Farrell's decision to take a break from international rugby adds further uncertainty.

Below we have taken a look at six candidates, with odds taken from BonusCodeBets .

2025 Lions Tour Captain Candidates

Evens  – james ryan.

The Leinster co-captain is the current bookies favourite to lead the Lions in 2025, with odds of 1/1.

For many he is the most obvious choice to lead Ireland in the post-Sexton era, and his form over the last year would suggest that he is likely to be selected for the Lions if fit.

Ryan has captained every side he has played for since his school days, and since 1997, every Lions tour has been lead by a forward bar Brian O'Driscoll' ill-fated tenure in 2005.

However, his captaincy credentials have been called into question this season after provoking the ire of the referee in both of Leinster's opening Champions Cup games, leading them to ask for the services of Garry Ringrose instead.

lions tour 2025 captain

4/1  – Maro Itoje

Itoje, like Ryan, has been one of Europe's leading locks over the past 5-6 seasons, and also looks likely to lead his side into the 2024 Six Nations Championship, due to the unavailability of England's generational and talismanic out-half captain, and the international retirement of Courtney Lawes.

His performances in the World Cup showed a return to his disruptive best, and he also looks nailed on to tour next year.

It will be his third outing with the Lions, having gone to New Zealand as a 22-year-old in 2017, before being voted Lions Player of the series by his peers in 2021.

lions tour 2025 captain

5/1 – Jac Morgan

Morgan looks a natural leader of men, having co-captained Wales at the recent World Cup, just a year-and-a-half after making his international debut.

For many he would be first-choice openside if the team were being picked tomorrow, but such is the competition in the back row that selection for the squad, let alone a starting berth, is far from a guarantee.

lions tour 2025 captain

10/1  -Jamie Ritchie

lions tour 2025 captain

16/1  – Owen Farrell

20/1  – Peter O’Mahony

It would be a great story, wouldn't it?

He has been counted out for Ireland in the past but always proves his worth, and the last two years have been his best in a green jersey.

Should Farrell choose him as captain of Ireland for the upcoming Six Nations, his odds will shorten immensely.

He lead the Lions in the first test in 2017, and there would be no question over the respect the British players will have for him.

His position as Ireland's and Munster's first-choice blindside will become harder to retain, with Tadhg Beirne, Ryan Baird, and Tom Ahern all playing great rugby.

lions tour 2025 captain

Other Candidates

It would be a surprise for the captain not to be one of the six mentioned, but should Borthwick or Farrell go with a left-field pick for captain of their country, they will enter into race.

The likes of Caelan Doris, Garry Ringrose, and Jamie George could all be in contention next year.

Courtney Lawes captained England at the World Cup in the absence of Owen Farrell, but he will surely need to be playing international rugby to be in with a chance of making it as a back row.

LIONS TOUR TO AUSTRALIA 2025

It was their first series win since 1997 and went to the deciding Test match in Sydney in front of the one of the biggest British & Irish Lions crowds ever.

The Tour to Australia in 2013 was a memorable journey across one of the most beautiful countries in the world and was a crowning glory for head coach Warren Gatland.

This was the Lions’ first Tour to Australia since 2001 and under the captaincy of Sam Warburton, they got off to a winning start in Brisbane. George North scored one of the greatest Lions Test tries of all time in a nervy victory in front of thousands of Lions fans.

Ahead of the second Test in Melbourne, Australia was awash with red as fans soaked up the delights of the Whitsunday Islands, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Uluru and much more. The Wallabies ground their way to victory to level the series and take four years of work down to the final 80 minutes in Sydney.

But roared on by a monstrous Sea of Red in the third Test, the Lions soared to one of their most comprehensive Test wins ever, dismantling Australia 41-16 to set the seal on the series.  Click here to secure early access for Australia 2025 .

One more time.

Warren Gatland will coach the British and Irish Lions in 2025 on their tour of Australia, with the New Zealander set to take charge of his fourth successive tour.

Gatland led the British and Irish Lions to a series win over Australia back in 2013, before going on to draw a series in his native New Zeland in 2017. Things however, didn’t go quite according to plan last time around in 2021, with the Lions falling to a 2-1 series loss to South Africa.

Ireland boss Andy Farrell had been hotly tipped for the role following his success over the last couple of years with the men in green, but he is not expected to be part of the coaching ticket this time around.

Gatland has also announced that Sam Warburton will be coming out of retirement for the tour to captain the touring party for a third time, with Alun Wyn Jones set to act as vice-captain.

“I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to take charge of the British and Irish Lions once again,” Gatland said in an official statement. “Wales are pretty shite at the moment, so I felt it was important to take the job so I can get as many of them as possible into the squad. I’ve already been chatting to Jamie Roberts and he’s keen to come out of retirement too. “I’m hoping to touch bases with Mike Phillips and Shane Williams too. The more, the merrier.”

lions tour 2025 captain

Gatland also revealed he’s been in talks with a former Ireland international too…

“I’m hoping Brian O’Driscoll will accept a call-up too. Gonna drop the bastard then for Jonathan Davies and Roberts in the centre just for shits and giggles and to piss the Irish off. I’m reallly looking forward to that one,” Gatland added

Gatland’s coaching ticket is set to be confirmed in the coming weeks with Rob Howley, Tom Jones, Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson all expected to be part of his ticket. Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey have also held discussions.

*Happy April Fool’s day!

Ellis Genge

Ellis Genge

Lions to play in Ireland for first time in 2025

Gatland backs Farrell to coach Lions

Lions, Premiership, URC announce partnership

Lions Tours: 0

Ellis Genge progressively got better throughout the Six Nations and it culminated in a brilliant scrummaging performance against France's Uini Atonio.

Atonio has six, yes six, stone on Genge but the England man worked hard, got low, and showed what an asset he can be in that front row.

He is also a leader in the England camp and a voice like that will be essential for life on Tour.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso

Feyi-Waboso

Position: Wing. Centre

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso made quite the impression in the few games he played for England, his start against Ireland cementing him as a real future star.

Ireland could not figure out how to stop his combination of power and pace and if he can continue to grow in the England shirt, he will be a certain name on Farrell's list for 2025.

Ollie Lawrence

England's Ollie Lawrence (centre) is tackled by France's Thomas Ramos (left) during the Guinness Six Nations match at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France. Picture date: Saturday March 16, 2024.

Position: Centre

Another man who had a tournament to remember, when Ollie Lawrence came back into the England side, he showed why he is lethal in that centre position.

He can play any role required - if you need him running hard lines he will, but if you need him using his brute strength to power up the field, he will also do that in abundance.

If he is partnered with a certain Ireland centre, it could be a sensational combination.

Jamie Gibson-Park

Ireland's scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park

Position: Scrum-half

Ultimately, Jamie Gibson-Park is the best scrum-half out there for the Lions at the moment.

His consistency for Ireland is second to none, and his kicking game and match awareness have been integral to the Ireland system that has seen them dominate so much.

A calm head is always needed in such a vital role and Gibson-Park can fulfil that for Farrell.

Ireland Six Nations

Lions Tours: 1 (2021)

Why wouldn't you put this guy on the plane? His sensational World Cup performance plus his performance at the Six Nations would have Bundee Aki down as a dead cert starter for the Lions at the moment.

His ability to make metres is not matched by any worldwide and he will be a lot for Australia to handle.

It could also be exciting to see him partner someone like Lawrence who also has power and pace.

Jack Crowley

Crowley

Position: Fly-half

A reward for a seamless transition, Jack Crowley can be a solid fly-half option for the Lions.

He has an old head on young shoulders and is never fazed when he makes a mistake, plus he can kick goals like the best of them.

Not many could step into Johnny Sexton's shoes and perform and he did that brilliantly for Ireland.

Finn Russell

Scotland's Finn Russell kicks a penalty

Finn Russell will always bring that flair and you know on a Lions Tour he would enjoy himself creatively on the pitch.

Right now, he is probably the most experienced and in-form fly-half option for the Lions and combined with some other big stars, we could see some Russell flair on show.

He also is a sensational goal kicker and that will be vital for Farrell's side.

lions tour 2025 captain

Duhan Van der Merwe

Duhan Van der Merwe's hat-trick gave Scotland a solid lead in the contest

Position: Wing

A man who can create something spectacular all on his own, Duhan Van der Merwe showed why his pace and power on the wing is pretty much unmatched.

There are not many as big as him who can show individual finesse like he does and he already has a solid understanding with Russell that could serve the Lions well in 2025.

Zander Fagerson

Scotland's Zander Fagerson (centre) scores their first try during the Guinness Six Nations match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy. Picture date: Saturday March 9, 2024.

Fagerson is one of the few players in these picks who went on the 2021 Lions Tour. However, he did not play.

The Glasgow Warriors prop has battled against the best of them and could be a solid option off the bench when that front row needs a new breath of life.

Mason Grady

Mason Grady made his mark in Wales' final game against Italy

Position: Centre, Wing

Mason Grady didn't get a whole host of minutes across the Six Nations, but when he did grace the field, Grady sparkled.

Scoring in the dying moments of their clash vs Italy, Grady showed that he offers something different with his dazzling footwork and could be someone that Farrell could take on Tour as the Lions look to the future.

George North's iconic moment for British and Irish Lions against Australia

Dafydd Jenkins

Dafydd Jenkins could get some big leadership lessons on a British and Irish Lions Tour

Position: Lock

The one thing a young captain needs is experience and quickly and a Lions Tour could offer the perfect environment for Wales skipper Dafydd Jenkins to grow.

It would be a vital opportunity for him to use his own voice but learn from other huge leaders across the nations as Wales continue their rebuilding journey.

Aaron Wainwright

Aaron Wainwright was one of Wales' standout performers in a difficult Six Nations

Position: No 8, Flanker

Aaron Wainwright was one of Wales' standout players in the Six Nations, making metres like no other in that Wales jersey.

His energy was electric and his enthusiasm even when under the pump could be a key asset for the Lions.

The fifth nation: The exiles available

Owen farrell.

Stuart Lancaster: Owen Farrell excited by French challenge

Position: Fly-half, Centre

Lions Tours: 3

Although the former England captain may be out of contention for international selection with his move to Racing 92 imminent, he can very much still be picked for the Lions Tour.

As England's top points scorer ever and with three Tours under his belt, his experience could be invaluable and what a storyline it would be to see father and son in action.

lions tour 2025 captain

Courtney Lawes

Lawes on Lions

Position: Lock, Flanker

Lions Tours: 2

Lawes retired from international duty after the 2023 Rugby World Cup,but he made sure to make clear that he still sees starring for the Lions in his future.

With a year out in France to come, Lawes could earn himself a shirt and when someone with 105 caps comes knocking, it is hard to turn them down.

Henry Arundell

Henry Arundell

Position: Full-back, wing

Henry Arundell was originally given a special exemption to represent England after London Irish went into administration, but after making his move to Racing 92 permanent, Arundell has locked his door to international duty for now.

However, Arundell has been a constant star and his pace at the back could be huge for the Lions if they come calling.

He knows how to score tries and in a Lions shirt, he could thrive.

In 14 games at Michigan, Milton completed 86 of his 152 pass attempts for five touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed 156 yards and three scores. At Tennessee, he was named the 2022 Capital One Orange Bowl MVP and was invited to 2024 Reese's Senior Bowl this spring.

For the third time today, the Detroit Lions traded up with the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire pick no. 189 in the sixth round. With that pick, the Lions selected Mekhi Wingo, a defensive tackle who played one season at Missouri and two with LSU. In three collegiate seasons, Wingo racked up 98 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, an interception, four passes defensed, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and a touchdown.

With the 172nd pick in the draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Michigan guard Trevor Keegan in the fifth round. A captain on the 2023 team that won the National Championship, Keegan was part of a unit that won back-to-back Joe Moore awards (2021 & 2022), given to the best offensive line in the country. Keegan was a Three-time All-Big Ten selection in his time with the Wolverines.

The Detroit Lions used the 132nd pick to select Utah safety Sione Vaki, who also played running back for the Utes.

He had 51 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, one interception and two pass breakups last season.

On offense, he had 42 rushes for 317 yards and two touchdowns, plus 11 catches for 203 yards and three touchdowns.

The Detroit Lions traded up again into the fourth round, this time with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Detroit acquired picks 132 and 210 and sent picks 164, 201 and a 2025 fourth round pick to the Eagles.

The Detroit Lions selected Giovanni Manu, an offensive tackle from the University of British Columbia.

He's 6-foot-8, 350 pounds and spent four years at UBC.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Lions traded their 3rd round pick in 2025 for the Jets' fourth round pick – 126th overall.

The Detroit Lions have traded up into the fourth round with the New York Jets. Detroit now has the 126th pick in the draft.

The Seattle Seahawks drafted Michigan tight end AJ Barner with the 121st pick in the NFL Draft. He becomes the eight Michigan player drafted this year.

The fourth round of the NFL Draft is officially open.

NFL Chief Football Administration Officer Dawn Aponte said as she opened the final day that there have been 550,000 people who have attended so far.

"We are going to break the all-time draft attendance record here today," Aponte said as she thanked fans and the city.

Gates officially opened for the draft at 9 a.m. and the rain stopped. Thousands have been flowing in for the draft and people are ready for the final day.

Detroit needs about 100,000 visitors to the final day to break the all-time NFL Draft attendance records. There were 275,000 people on Thursday and 230,000 people on Friday.

Lions 2024 NFL Draft takeaways: New picks bolster roster with Super Bowl aspirations

DETROIT, MICHIGAN - APRIL 25: Terrion Arnold celebrates with fans after being selected 24th overall by the Detroit Lions during the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft at Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza on April 25, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

The 2024 NFL Draft has come to an end, after a record crowd of 775,000 people flocked to Detroit to take in the festivities. An incredible weekend for the city. Perhaps for its NFL franchise, too.

“I know it wasn’t just Lions fans, but, look — to set the NFL record for attendance for the draft site … I’ve said all along that we have the best fans in the world,” Lions GM Brad Holmes said. “The anticipation of having the draft here just meant so much. We talked about it, just being able to let the world and the NFL world get a taste of what Detroit’s about and what this culture is about. Great for our city, great for our franchise. … That’s about as impressive as it gets.”

Over at the team headquarters in Allen Park, Mich., the Lions were wheeling and dealing, landing players they love, welcoming in the next wave of prospects to a roster they believe can contend for a Super Bowl.

Let’s recap the weekend that was, and how the new additions fit in to the bigger picture.

Lions NFL Draft picks 2024: Grades, fits and scouting reports

Best value pick

Christian mahogany, g, boston college.

You could go a few different directions with this one, which speaks to how the draft played out for the Lions. Cornerback Terrion Arnold was the No. 10 prospect on Dane Brugler’s big board , but the Lions were able to get him at No. 24 after trading up. Holmes said Ennis Rakestraw Jr. was his No. 2 corner , and that he considered trading up for him. He even said he thought there was a chance he could go in the first round. And the Lions were able to land LSU defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo, a small but quick three-technique who can provide some pass-rush juice from the interior, at No. 189. He was ranked 95th on the big board.

There’s an argument for about four players here. That said, I’ll go with Mahogany. Brugler ranked him 99th overall — a third-/fourth-round grade. The Lions were able to get him at No. 210 in the sixth, when most projections had him coming off the board somewhere in the fourth round. Mahogany was a three-year starter for Boston College. Ahead of his final season, he had NIL opportunities to leave, but chose to stay. He’s a two-time team captain who plays with a mean streak. If he’s as good as advertised, he could be in the mix to take over as a starter in 2025, if Kevin Zeitler departs in free agency.

Here’s Brugler’s description of his game: “He plays like a bouncer outside of a club, looking to bash heads with power and forceful hands. He projects as a guard-versatile NFL starter, ideally suited for a downhill run team.”

If the Lions were able to grab a starting-caliber guard at No. 210, Holmes might be out of breath from all the victory laps he’ll be taking a few years from now.

Roll the tape on our newest tackle 🎥 @NFLCanada | @itsyaboigio pic.twitter.com/OYwIVatNsI — Detroit Lions (@Lions) April 27, 2024

Most surprising pick

Giovanni manu, ot, british columbia.

Brugler had a priority free-agent grade on Manu. The NFL seemed higher on him, though, considering he took 11 top-30 visits (and had to squeeze the Lions in for a rare Sunday visit — typically an off day).

The pick itself makes sense. Manu is considered a developmental tackle, and the Lions were in need of depth and future insurance. His arms are 34 3/8-inches long. He ran a sub-5.00 40 time at 6-foot-7, 352 pounds. That is off-the-charts athleticism and length at the tackle position. The only questions are whether he can handle NFL edges, and how long it’ll take to get him ready. Additionally, the Lions had to part ways with a 2025 third-rounder to acquire him. That’s not nothing.

This is very much a wait-and-see pick, but Holmes said he woke up and would’ve felt a gut punch if someone else took Manu. Based on feedback he heard, Manu wouldn’t have lasted much longer, had the Lions not come up for him. If it hits, the team could have an absolute steal and a potential starting tackle down the road. But it’ll be a while until we know what the Lions have.

lions tour 2025 captain

Biggest question mark

Sione Vaki and the Lions had met multiple times during the pre-draft process, and he always felt like a prospect who fits what they’re all about. The Lions gave up a 2025 fourth-rounder for him, among other picks, but he was a player Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell identified as a guy they’d trade up for in this range. Now that they’ve got their guy, the only remaining question is: What position will he play?

Vaki is a rare two-way prospect, playing running back and safety in college. While it seems the majority of folks viewed him as more of a safety, including the Lions initially, Vaki said he had a number of visits with teams that viewed him as a running back. After watching more and more of his tape, Holmes concluded Vaki has untapped potential at running back, and had him meet with Detroit’s offensive coaching staff during his visit. Holmes said the Lions know he can play safety, but he seems way more intrigued with his offensive/special teams potential.

Remaining needs

The Lions don’t have a ton of roster needs, at least among their starters. They did well to address positions of need in free agency, setting themselves to go best-player-available in the draft. You could make a case they could’ve used a receiver, but considering how they felt about Vaki and Manu and the value they got with Wingo and Mahogany, it would’ve been hard to find a spot for one. Edge is also a position the Lions didn’t address this draft, but it wasn’t viewed as a strong class, anyway. Perhaps the team looks into adding a kicker to compete with Michael Badgley .

Post-draft outlook

The Lions are ready for the 2024 season. Their offense remains elite, with running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery , wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown , tight end Sam LaPorta , a potential third-year leap from Jameson Williams , an offensive line the team believes improved and a QB in Jared Goff playing some of the best football of his career in Detroit. This unit, with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson back in the mix, should be humming again in 2024.

Defensively, the Lions believe they have a group ready to take the necessary step forward. Their defensive line features Aidan Hutchinson , Alim McNeill and DJ Reader — perhaps the most notable addition of the March free agency period. Recently signed edge Marcus Davenport , if healthy, should provide a quality option for the team opposite Hutchinson, with Josh Paschal and James Houston factoring in. Linebackers Alex Anzalone and Derrick Barnes are coming off career seasons, and more is expected of second-year talent Jack Campbell . In the secondary, the Lions revamped their cornerback room. They added Carlton Davis III, Amik Robertson , Arnold and Rakestraw. Brian Branch has the flexibility to play nickel or safety. Ballhawk Kerby Joseph , who played through injuries a year ago, is back for his third season, and Ifeatu Melifonwu is hoping to prove his late-season breakout wasn’t a fluke.

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has never had a defense this talented in Detroit. He’s got the tools to compete now.

If the defense finally comes together, this team could be very good in 2024. On paper, this is a roster that can compete for a Super Bowl.

2025 NFL Draft odds: Shedeur Sanders favored to go No. 1

Coach Prime might not need to direct his son to a specific NFL location, because it appears he won't be on the board for long.

Now that the 2024 NFL Draft is over and done with, odds for who will go at the top of next year's draft have been released.

And at DraftKings Sportsbook, Colorado star quarterback Shedeur Sanders is favored to go No. 1.

Sanders — the son of Colorado head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders — had a stellar individual year in 2023, his first under center for the Buffaloes. He threw for 3,230 yards and completed 69.3% of his passes.

He added in 27 touchdown passes and tossed just three interceptions.

Let's take a look at the odds for next year's No. 1 pick at DraftKings Sportsbook.

2025 NFL DRAFT NO. 1 PICK ODDS: *

Shedeur Sanders , Colorado : +100 (bet $10 to win $20 total) Carson Beck , Georgia : +300 (bet $10 to win $40 total) Quinn Ewers , Texas : +300 (bet $10 to win $40 total) Drew Allar , Penn State : +850 (bet $10 to win $95 total) Jalen Milroe , Alabama : +950 (bet $10 to win $105 total) Jaxson Dart , Ole Miss : +1200 (bet $10 to win $130 total) Cameron Ward , Miami : +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total) Mykel Williams , Georgia: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)

* odds as of 4/28/24

Not surprisingly, the first seven names on the oddsboard are quarterbacks, coming off of a draft in which six QBs went in the first 12 picks, including picks No. 1, 2 and 3.

Just behind Sanders are Georgia's Beck and Texas' Ewers.

Beck completed 72.4% of his passes last season en route to throwing for 3,941 yards, 24 TDs and just six INTs.

Ewers completed 69% of his passes for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and six picks.

Deion made waves regarding next year's NFL Draft when, in late March, Sanders appeared on the "Million Dollaz Worth of Game" podcast and had this to say about the professional landing spots for Shedeur, Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter , and his other son Shilo , who plays in the Colorado secondary:

"All of this is subjective because I know where I kinda want them to go. And let’s not forget Shilo. But I know where I want them to go. So, there are certain cities that ain’t gonna happen. … It’s going to be an Eli. We ain’t doing it."

Deion was referring to the Eli Manning draft saga, in which Manning refused to play for the then-San Diego Chargers, who had the No. 1 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.

Rumor then spread that Deion preferred Shedeur and Hunter to play for one of six NFL teams.

Deion addressed those rumors in mid-April .

"One thing about a lie — a lie is so fast it can outrun the truth any day. That's a bald-faced lie. That's a stupid lie. I have more than six owners that are friends. I have more than six GMs that are friends."

Detroit Lions Draft Picks 2024: Evaluating Every Selection

How each of the Lions' picks fits the organization.

  • Author: Christian Booher

In this story:

The Detroit Lions enter Thursday's first round of the NFL Draft with the 29th overall selection. However, with the unpredictable nature of the event, anything could happen.

General manager Brad Holmes will conduct his fourth Draft at the head of the organization. With a background in college scouting, he has quickly established himself as one of the best in the business at approaching the Draft and adding talented young players to his roster.

With Detroit hosting the Draft , there's an added level of excitement without the fan base.

Last season, Holmes ' draft class put forth elite production in their rookie campaigns. Each of the team's first four picks wound up being starters and two, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta, earned Pro Bowl appearances.

Even further, Holmes' first class has begun to cash in on second contracts. The 2021 crop had two players, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell, ink extensions that reset the market at their respective positions on Wednesday.

With this Draft success, there is optimism that the Lions will continue to add young standouts to their roster as they look to compete for the Lombardi Trophy in 2024.

Entering the first round, the Lions are equipped with seven picks throughout the seven rounds. The team has two sixth-round selections while they do not currently have one in the fourth.

Follow along for instant analysis on each of the Lions' Draft picks from April 25-27, as All Lions will evaluate how each prospect fits with the Lions in the 2024 season and beyond.

Round 1, Pick 24

Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama

How he fits: Arnold is a physical cornerback who excels in man-to-man coverage. This will go nicely with the team's man-heavy scheme under coordinator Aaron Glenn. He has excellent anticipation which lends itself to the ability to stay on top of opposing routes and in turn allows him to intercept the ball at a high rate. He led the SEC with five interceptions last season.

When he starts: The Lions added a pair of veteran corners this offseason in Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson. Both players could be day one starters, so there's not as much pressure for Arnold to start right away. However, he has all the talent to be in the mix from day one and it would be no surprise for him to be on the boundary in the season opener.

Round 2, Pick 61

Ennis Rakestraw Jr., CB, Missouri

How he fits: The decision to double up on cornerback is an interesting one this early in the Draft. The Lions added Davis and Robertson early in the offseason, then drafted Arnold in round one. However, Rakestraw fits the team's culture as another tough, physical defender who is unafraid to deliver a big hit in the run game.

Rakestraw posted subpar testing numbers at the NFL Scouting Combine, but his tape clearly outweighs what those measurables showed. Though small for the position, he plays with a mean streak.

When he starts: The cornerback room is shaping up to be full of competition, as it has been completely overhauled. Like Arnold, he's comfortable playing man-to-man coverage and shouldn't have any issues adapting to the Lions' style. He has the ability to compete for a starting job right away.

Round 4, Pick 126

Giovanni Manu, OT, British Columbia

How he fits: Manu is a little-known prospect with excellent athletic ability. He's a developmental piece who began playing football as a ninth grade and played collegiately in Canada. He'll need to grow, but the Lions liked him enough to deal a 2025 third-round pick to move up for him.

When he starts: Time will tell, as it depends on how fast he comes along from an adjustment standpoint. He has the physical traits to be a difference-maker, but he'll be in need of seasoning before playing a big role. Taylor Decker's contract expires after this season, so there could be a starting spot available as soon as next season. However, it's uncertain as to whether or not Manu will be ready to fill it.

Round 4, Pick 132

Sione Vaki, S/RB, Utah

How he fits: The Lions seemed to like Vaki throughout the process, as he took a top-30 visit to the organization. Though he was primarily a safety, he played running back in college and was announced as a running back at the Draft. The Lions have two standout backs in David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, so he will likely compete with Craig Reynolds for the third spot.

When he starts: Vaki should be a core special-teamer right away, as he is a versatile player. His first hurdle will be to make an impact for the Lions' special teams units while competing to be the RB3 against Craig Reynolds. He likely won't surpass Gibbs or Montgomery on the depth chart any time soon, but should become an impact player on coverage units fairly quickly.

Round 6, Pick 189

Mekhi Wingo, DT, LSU

How he fits: Wingo slipped much farther down the board than expected, as many had a late-Day 2 grade on the talented LSU defender. He is prone to inconsistency, but has explosiveness in his game and was a team captain for the Tigers. Wingo also was disruptive in the backfield with 8.5 career sacks in three seasons. He profiles as a versatile defender who could line up in multiple techniques for the Lions.

When he starts: The Lions bolstered their defensive line with the addition of DJ Reader as the nose tackle, and Alim McNeill will handle most of the other defensive tackle responsibilities. As a result, the Lions can ease Wingo into the professional ranks. If he outperforms expectations, he could come to own a rotational role down the line in his rookie season. He'll put pressure on the likes of Levi Onwuzurike, who has struggled with consistency in three NFL seasons.

Round 6, Pick 210

Christian Mahogany, IOL, Boston College

How he fits: Like Wingo, Mahogany is excellent value for the Lions late in the sixth-round. Widely believed to be a Day 2 selection by many analyst, the lineman fell down the board. Detroit, who lost veteran Jonah Jackson in free agency, adds young depth in the form of Mahogany. He was sound in both blocking facets, earning an 82.2 mark in pass-blocking and a 74.5 mark in run-blocking, per PFF.

When he starts: The Lions signed veteran Kevin Zeitler to a one-year deal to plug the hole left by Jackson's departure. Yet, Zeitler is 34 and could be a short-term solution. Mahogany will likely provide reliable depth early in his career with a chance to compete for a starting job in his second campaign.

Grading and ranking NFL's new uniforms: Broncos, Jets, Lions, Texans change jerseys for 2024 season

Assessing some of the big new looks around the league.

jared-goff-lions-usatsi.jpg

The NFL offseason could also be known as the NFL uniform redesign season. In 2024 alone, four different teams have unveiled completely revised wardrobes for the new year. Meanwhile plenty of others have tweaked their current sets with new throwback jerseys, alternate looks and even vintage-colored facemasks.

So which of the teams undergoing major aesthetic changes aced their respective makeover? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, they say, but here's how we'd grade and rank the big overhauls going into 2024:

4. Denver Broncos

Of the teams to reveal a new look, the Broncos have undergone the most jarring refresh with their "Mile High Collection."

Introducing … the Mile High Collection™️ pic.twitter.com/ca81sGbkGl — Denver Broncos (@Broncos) April 22, 2024

Accordingly, there's both a lot to like and a lot to process. Individually, some of the new flourishes -- tiny triangles and angled sleeve caps to represent the Rocky Mountains, "5280" helmet labels to recognize Denver's elevation -- are appropriately bold and thoughtful. It's an admirable effort to pair existing colors with a more minimalized display. But taken as a whole, the collection bears some similarities to college getups. Except, of course, the new alternate: a refined spin on the Broncos' classic 1970s-era "Orange Crush" uniforms, complete with "Legacy Blue" helmets housing the club's old "D" helmets.

The ‘77 classics … are BACK! pic.twitter.com/xG8vtiC1Gf — Denver Broncos (@Broncos) April 22, 2024

This retro look certainly enhances the new rotation, but its return to the uniform arsenal begs the question: Why weren't these beloved outfits simply made the new full-timers? Broncos fans already appear to be advocating for as much.

3. New York Jets

The Jets went back to the future for their redesign, essentially adopting their 2023 throwbacks -- a spin on the "Sack Exchange"-era uniforms worn from 1979-1989 -- as their new regular attire, calling it the "Legacy Collection."

#Jets unveil their new “legacy collection” uniforms. The logo is a nod to the Sack Exchange era (1979-89). 📸 @nyjets pic.twitter.com/hT3jewcLDi — Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) April 15, 2024

As a result, there are not a ton of new features here, aside from a modified rendition of the club's classic "Jets" logo. But that's OK. Simplicity has been a staple of some of the Jets' most classic green and white looks, so this registers as a genuine return to the roots. One notable omission from the new jerseys and pants is any distinguishing "New York" or "Jets" branding, but that too is a nod to the old look.

2. Detroit Lions

The Lions picked a good time to refresh their look, updating their wardrobe with a "One Pride" collection just as they've returned to relevance on the field, but it helps they've also opted for a makeover that's both splashy and justified.

Thoughts on the Lions' new uniforms? 📸 @Lions pic.twitter.com/ojEhPKgtrN — The Athletic NFL (@TheAthleticNFL) April 19, 2024

The boldest of the strokes is clearly the "Motor City" alternates, featuring black jerseys with blue numbers and helmets. It's a hit-or-miss kind of look, certainly more sleek and aggressive than the previous grey alternates, but somewhat reminiscent of the Carolina Panthers . The real stars are the traditional home and away looks; the "Honolulu Blue" getup has been tweaked to pop even more, shining with both vintage simplicity and radiant color, evoking the look of the 1990s Barry Sanders era. Meanwhile the white road jerseys, despite a new "Detroit" label beneath the collar, retain a lot of the clean, crisp look they already had.

1. Houston Texans

Texans CEO Cal McNair said this week that Houston's new four-uniform collection -- "H-Town Made" -- was primarily fan-inspired. And he seems to be telling the truth, because the Texans' new look seems both broadly appealing and colorfully upgraded -- the perfect balance of honoring traditional colors while introducing fresh design.

YOUR 2024-2025 HOUSTON TEXANS JERSEYS 🤘🏻 pic.twitter.com/eqTjPFzX0k — Jacob (@Stroud4AllPro) April 23, 2024

Aside from a modernized number font, the regular home jersey isn't drastically different, but that's OK, because the traditional look was already solid. The updated road look, while at times reminiscent of the Atlanta Falcons , is crisper and bolder thanks in large part due to enhanced bullhorn-esque sleeve stripes. But the real jewels are the alternates: A new "Battle Red" combo pairs red pants with red jerseys and a candy-paint red helmet also featuring a new bullhorn logo; while an "H-Town" alternate introduces both an all-new "H-Town" helmet logo and "H-Town Blue" coloring, which has an icy pop against the darker uniform colors. There's something for everyone here: classic regulars and eye-popping alternatives. Buckle up for the season.
