Know Before You Go: Visiting Loretta Lynn’s Tennessee Ranch

Note: This is an opinion piece. The opinions are only that of the author and do not reflect the site as a whole. Thank you.

My mother has been a huge fan of Loretta Lynn for as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to Ms. Lynn’s music on the turntable stereo system. A few years ago I came up with the idea of visiting Loretta Lynn’s Tennessee Ranch. Life got in the way and it never happened.

For my mother’s milestone birthday this year, I’m determined to make the road trip a reality. And I thought I’d write about the planning stage for other country music fans interested in making the trip to the Ranch.

Where is Loretta Lynn’s Ranch?

Graceland and Dollywood are two of the most-talked-about tourist destinations for country music fans. But Tennessee is also home to the grand home that tells Loretta Lynn’s “rags-to-riches” story.

Loretta Lynn’s Ranch is located in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Wide Open Country puts that about an hour from Nashville. Loretta Lynn once lived in the plantation home, but now she lives in another house she built on the property.

The country music icon famously grew up as a “Coal Miner’s Daughter” in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky.

Camping Options Available During Certain Months

I love a good road trip. Given the ongoing pandemic, driving is a more comfortable option than flying. It’s a fourteen-hour drive from where I live in Upstate New York. That’s at least two days on the road with an overnight stay at a cheap hotel along the route.

Google Maps

When looking for accommodations while in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, I discovered that there are camping options on the Ranch. The three campgrounds are Stagecoach Hill, Boone Hill, and Lower Campground.

However, the Boone Hill and Lower Campgrounds are closed from November until April.

The campgrounds have RV hookups, as well as tent camping.

There are also cabins available to rent. My tentative plan is to stay in the cabins for two nights. Depending on which cabin, it will cost between $105 and $205 per night. The $205 option is a bunkhouse that sleeps eight.

The Ranch has many events throughout the summer, so reserving the cabin early is a must.

Things to See at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch

One reason for staying in the cabins or in the area for multiple nights is because there is SO MUCH to see on the Ranch.

First and foremost is a tour of the home itself. Fans can get glimpses of Loretta Lynn’s long career in the Coal Miner’s Daughter museum, as well as the collection of gifts from fans in the Doll museum.

Other must-sees on the property include Loretta’s Frontier Homestead, Grist Mill Museum, Native American, and Artifacts Museum. Loretta Lynn grew up almost 400 miles away, but fans won’t have to go far to see her childhood home.

The Ranch boasts a real-life replica of the Butcher Hollow cabin.

Many of the attractions are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan accordingly.

There are also multiple gift shops on site.

One thing you might be on the lookout for is ghosts. The Ranch is rumored to be haunted. Even Loretta Lynn herself has experienced strange happenings in the home. Check out this Travel Channel documentary on YouTube about the haunted house.

Nearby Restaurant Offers Home-Cooked Meals

You’re Cookin’ It Country is the title of Loretta Lynn’s cookbook. A restaurant down the road from the Ranch is inspired by Loretta Lynn’s cooking. Loretta Lynn’s Country Kitchen isn’t owned by the iconic singer. But it has a down-home feel and taste. Check out the menu.

Loretta Lynn's Ranch

Spend a Weekend at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch

If you are a fan of Loretta Lynn or classic country music, then there is no doubt that you will LOVE a trip to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. But if you aren’t a fan, don’t mark this off your list. There is a lot to do at this family fun attraction. Take a look at the offerings before you decide.

Things to Do at the Ranch

Located in Hurricane Mills, TN, Loretta Lynn’s Ranch is about an hour west of Nashville. The ranch covers LOTS of territory and has many special events throughout the year.

Camping and Cabins

There is a campground located on the ranch that is open all year round. If you aren’t into the idea of ‘roughing it’, there are also cabins available to rent .

We stayed in one of the cabins during our trip. They are small but they have two queen beds, a nice bathroom and a small fridge and microwave. They also feature a nice deck on the back.

loretta lynn's ranch front of cabins

Of course you can always visit the ranch just for the day and pick and choose which activities will fit into your time frame.

The Western Town

The Western Town area is where you will find the majority of the tours available. You will need to drive to this area even if you are staying on the property. There is plenty of parking.

Start in the shop right out front to purchase your tour. There are two different tours available.  Tour #1 includes the plantation home and museum. Tour #2 includes the plantation home, museum, coal mine, and the Butcher Holler home. I would suggest you go with #2.

It’s not much more expensive and, to me, going from the small Butcher Holler house to the large plantation home really gives you a glimpse into the life that Loretta Lynn has lived.

Touring the Museums

We began our tour in the main museum. No photography is allowed in this museum.  As you enter there is a large room to the left. This space is filled with scenes from Loretta’s life.

There are several cars on display and you can go on her old tour bus. Each of these displays is accompanied by a large sign handwritten by Loretta with her description of what you are seeing.

On the other side of the museum is a large collection of memorabilia. There are tons of dresses and costumes worn by Loretta and her sister, Crystal Gayle. There is also a huge collection of family photos.

You will also be able to see a display of the wedding gowns worn by many of her children and grandchildren. And there are many promotional items from their varied careers in country music .

loretta lynn's ranch gift store building

As you continue through the museum, you will see many displays of awards and gold records. The number of trophies and awards is massive.

The museum also has a complete replica exhibit of the Butcher Holler school room.

If you happen to be a fan of Conway Twitty (and if you aren’t, you should be) the next part of the museum will thrill you. There is an entire room dedicated to an exhibit of Loretta’s late duet partner.

This exhibit also features a huge video screen that plays classic footage of Loretta and Conway together. This is a great place to rest for a while. There are several benches in front of the video screen.

Don’t Miss the Gift Shops!

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - autographed ceramic apple

At the end of your tour of the museum, you will get to visit the first of many gift shops at the Loretta Lynn Ranch. These gift shops are all unique and, to be honest, I’ve never experienced anything quite like them before.

Many of the shops feature items that have been autographed by Loretta herself. The clerks told us that she comes in often and picks up her pen and just starts signing the merchandise.

That brings to mind another important thing to mention about the ranch. The employees at the ranch are utterly devoted to Loretta. They speak of her as if she is their family. It’s really cute.  🙂

The Official Guided Tour

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - Butcher Holler Home

The official tour begins on the steps of the Grist Mill.  The tour group assembles here and then walks across the street to the replica of the Butcher Holler home.

There is a large set of steps in order to access the home so keep that in mind.  The home is very small and has only four rooms.  It’s very hard to imagine the large Lynn family all living in this home but they did.

The tour won’t take very long and once you are done the next stop is the coal mine.

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - Coal Mine

The coal mine is a re-creation of the mine where Loretta’s father worked. There are lots of authentic mining tools on display here also. It is quite small so keep that in mind if you have issues being in tight spaces.

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - front of the house

After the coal mine, you will board a tour bus to travel to the plantation house. It’s a quick trip. The guide will tell you lots of stories about the house. There are even ghost stories.

No photography is allowed inside the house.  You will get to tour the main level of the home. You will even get to see the kitchen where Loretta filmed those famous Crisco commercials!

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - side of house

Once the plantation house tour is over, the tour bus will take you back to the grist mill. This is a really beautiful natural area. Carve out some time to just sit and relax here while you take in the beautiful scenery.

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - patio over looking the water fall

In this same area, you will find the Fan and Doll Museum . Basically Loretta’s fans love to make and send her stuff…especially dolls. She had so many that she collected them all into this large room. Take your time touring this deal. You won’t believe all the stuff!

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - Doll 1

There are additional gift shops located throughout this area. There is also a playground, a snack bar, public restrooms and a large picnic area.

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - playground

During the summer months you can canoe, kayak or tube. There is also a large swimming pool on the ranch. Trail rides on horseback , hiking and 4 wheeling are some of the other outdoor fun options available.

Loretta Lynn's Ranch - waterfall view

Consider a trip to the Loretta Lynn Ranch. There are so many things to do and see. And if you aren’t a fan before your trip, chances are good you might be by the time it’s over!

Let’s Take a Virtual Tour to Butcher Hollar Kentucky and Visit Loretta Lynn’s Birthplace

If you've got about five minutes, let's take a trip back in time to Butcher Hollar, Kentucky, near the little town of Van Lear, and visit the childhood home of Loretta Lynn. A couple of Yankee friends of mine with their camera rolling made the short drive out of my Johnson County home town of Paintsville, a few miles down to Hagar Hill, through West Van Lear and Van Lear, and along the beautiful Miller's Creek Drive (an awesome drive through the Appalachian foothills) to Butcher Hollar.

If you saw the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" or heard the song by Loretta Lynn, you already know that's where Loretta, Crystal Gayle and all the rest of the Webb clan spent their childhood.

Over the years most of Loretta's family made their way out of Butcher Hollar, like so many other folks in that area do. However, one fellow that stayed was Loretta's younger brother Herman Webb. For many years he ran the old coal camp company store down at the mouth of Butcher Hollar; and for $5.00 he would meet you a short distance up the hollar and give you a guided tour of the old original country home where he and Loretta grew up. Herman was 83 when he died a couple of years ago; but let's go back to when he was still giving tours. Herman was such a laid back fellow, it's hard to believe he had such world famous siblings.

The four minute video starts with the turn off on Miller Creek Road...

COVID 19 has kept the family from giving tours but when the pandemic is over, you may want to take a drive to Johnson County and visit Van Lear and Butcher Hollar. Except for strip mines, not too much coal comes out of the Van Lear coal camp anymore. But you can still visit the old company store and grab a sandwich, a moon pie and RC. Someone will be available to take you up to the family home and show you around.

If you saw the 1980  Emmy award winning movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" you saw scenes portrayed in the house but those scenes were not filmed in Butcher Hollar. If you watched the video above, you will see why. The road up Miller's Creek to the house is very narrow making it difficult to get the trucks carrying movie equipment to the Webb home. The movie producers also wanted to cut a road up the hill that the house is located on so their cameras and other equipment could be moved close. The Webb family didn't like that idea so all of the scenes involving Loretta's home were filmed at a replica house the movie company constructed near Whitesburg. That replica of Lynn’s Butcher Hollow homeplace, built at Bottom Fork, has since been burned by arsonists. Except for a Van Lear train scene, the rest of the film was made in the Whitesburg-Wise Virginia area.

The admission to Loretta's homeplace is still just $5.00 and you can take all the photos you want.

You might also want to visit the wonderful coal museum in Van Lear. It's well worth your time.

Tour loretta lynn’s childhood home.

Rose Heichelbech by1

Loretta Lynn recently passed away at the age of 90. She will forever be remembered for her iconic and charged songs, like “Fist City”, “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)”, and “Don’t Come Home a’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)”. But, one of her most famous songs, which was also a book and a movie, was “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. This song tells of her humble upbringing in a cabin during the Great Depression, with her father’s meager wages from coal mining barely seeing the family through.

Instead of being paid an hourly wage or a yearly salary, he was only paid 25 cents for each ton of coal he shoveled by hand. Like other miners in the area he was paid in scrip instead of money, which could only be used to buy things from stores the coal company owned and operated. But, she said they had lots of love to go around and that her mother was understanding and didn’t complain about the hardships they went through as a family.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home exterior

The house where she grew up in Butcher Hollow near Van Lear, Kentucky is still standing and the inside has been made into a museum called the Loretta Lynn Homeplace that you can wander through.

She was born in 1932 to Clara (“Clary”) and Theodore (“Ted”) Webb. The house where the family settled is built into a hill on a peaceful plot of land that’s both wooded and secluded. The only way up to the house in those days was a footpath as no one in the immediate area even had an automobile. In the book Coal Miner’s Daughter Lynn wrote that their first home had been very small and shoddy. She wrote that when the new home “had four rooms instead of one…we really thought we’d arrived.”

Some of the tours are given by one of Loretta Lynn’s nieces which means that there’s lot of family lore and little details sprinkled throughout the tour.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home exterior

When Lynn used to come back to visit the cabin she would often sit and look out over the countryside from the front porch swing.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home interior

Inside the house much of the furniture pieces are ones that Lynn and her siblings grew up using. The big radio is where they listened to particular radio programs. But, they had to be selective since it ran on battery power as the area didn’t yet have electricity. So, they only listened to their very favorite shows.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home interior

The bed is covered in mementos and artifacts, including a family guitar that many of the 8 Webb children learned to play on. There are two beds on display downstairs and two bedrooms in the tiny upstairs area, the latter of which are not on display to the public.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home interior

In the kitchen are some moonshining items on display. There’s also a metal lunch bucket and miner’s hat with light very much like the ones Ted Webb would have taken with him to work each day. The original hat he wore is in the collection at the Loretta Lynn Ranch museum in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home interior

Near the kitchen in this small house the family’s original pie safe and Hoosier cabinet still stand. It wasn’t until around the time that Lynn was herself married in the late 1940s that the holler got electricity and life became a little easier for the family.

You can see much more of the house, including some of the family’s photos, in the video tour below from the YouTube channel, Yankee in the South.

Loretta Lynn's Granddaughter Emmy Russell Says 'Out of Control' Eating Disorder Inspired Her Song 'Skinny' (Exclusive)

"I kind of grew up in the spotlight and so I was always very image-conscious," says Emmy Russell, who made Top 24 of this season's 'American Idol'

Emmy Russell , granddaughter of the late country music legend Loretta Lynn, auditioned for this season of American Idol with a deeply personal original song called "Skinny" — and now she's made the Top 24.

The rising star opened up to PEOPLE about her struggle with disordered eating and how she was inspired to take that difficult experience and transform it into something beautiful with "Skinny."

While Russell's eating disorder began in high school, she was able to get it under control until several years later. It was on a mission trip to Brazil when she was 22 that Russell noticed something was going wrong again with her health.

"All of a sudden I started getting a little bit sick and I was like, 'Why am I not keeping any of my food down?' And I think a part of it was the eating disorder in high school, but then the damage that happens to your body and it just happened again," Russell, now 25, tells PEOPLE. "Then I started seeing results from me getting sick, and then it just spun out of control."

"I felt a lot of shame. I was like, 'I'm serving God. I'm in Brazil. Why is this coming back?'"

She realized she needed to return home to Nashville and, with the help of her mom, seek recovery.

"I struggled a lot with physical beauty image pressures and social media. I kind of grew up in the spotlight and so I was always very image-conscious," Russell recalls.

But she realized she was not alone. "When I saw 80 or 70 million people struggle with eating, I was like, 'What? I'm not the only one. I need to sing about it.'"

With "Skinny," Russell learned that "you can only really succeed when you're truly yourself." The song helped her turn pain into beauty,

Hubert Vestil/WireImage

"I showed up, no makeup, my red hair, my natural color. And just got on the piano and I was like, 'Oh, Emmy works. My true self is OK. People relate to that,'" she says.

She adds, "When I wrote 'Skinny,' I felt a weight of responsibility [and thought], 'I don't need to go back to this. I know it's bad for me.' And so the more that I sing it, it's almost like the more that I'm delivering myself and I'm like, 'Oh, OK. Now I got that feeling out. Now I am above it.' And so finding a creative outlet for all your pain and beauty. Beauty from ashes, that's music for me. It's like the ashes are the pain and I make something out of it."

Russell wrote the song when she was in recovery and decided to release it on Song House. It was there that the song went viral and she was contacted by someone who worked in casting for American Idol .

"I was scared a lot, so I think American Idol pushed me to be like, 'Oh, I can do this and people actually like me and they relate to my story,'" she says.

For anyone going through something similar, Russell says the best thing to do is "take a break for a second and talk about it." She also recommends "unplugging and unwinding" from your phone.

"I feel like talking about it is the best thing, tell your family, talk to a therapist. I feel like just talking about it is the first step," she says. "And realize that your beauty is deeper than skin. That's kind of my mantra is beauty's deeper than skin. It's who you are inside. What are you passionate about? Who are you? Who are you? You're not just this. This just carries your human experience."

Tour Loretta Lynn’s Childhood Home

It was rustic to say the least.

Rose Heichelbech

When Lynn used to come back to visit the cabin she would often sit and look out over the countryside from the front porch swing.

Inside the house much of the furniture pieces are ones that Lynn and her siblings grew up using. The big radio is where they listened to particular radio programs. But, they had to be selective since it ran on battery power as the area didn’t yet have electricity. So, they only listened to their very favorite shows.

The bed is covered in mementos and artifacts, including a family guitar that many of the 8 Webb children learned to play on. There are two beds on display downstairs and two bedrooms in the tiny upstairs area, the latter of which are not on display to the public.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

loretta lynn house tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
