The upcoming tour is just the latest milestone in an already monumental career for Combs, whose acclaimed new album, Growin’ Up , debuted at #1 on Billboard ’s Top Country Albums chart this past June. Out now via River House Artists/Columbia Nashville (stream/purchase here ), Growin’ Up was produced by Combs, Chip Matthews and Jonathan Singleton and is his third studio album following 2019’s 3x Platinum  What You See is What You Get  and his 4x Platinum debut,  This One’s For You . The record also features his current single, “ The Kind of Love We Make ,” which debuted at #17 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart—the highest chart debut since January 2020—and is currently top 5 and rising. The single adds to a historic run at country radio for Combs, who recently achieved his record-breaking, thirteenth-consecutive # 1 as his single, “Doin’ This,” reached the top of both the Billboard Country Airplay and Mediabase/Country Aircheck charts.

Critical acclaim for Growin’ Up :

“one of country music’s biggest stars…He’s accomplished this not with virtuosic musical innovation, genre-crossing celebrity collaborations or by hosting a television singing competition, but by cranking out one irrepressibly catchy, widely relatable meat-and-potatoes country anthem after another.” — The New York Times

“an authentic creative force, capitalizing on his man-of-the-people status to release music that resonates with wide swaths of listeners… as an artist, he’s making his biggest strides yet ”— Grammy.com

“He’s emerged as the field’s much-loved everyman with hits that country aficionados could not possibly resist” — The Wall Street Journal

“his detail-rich songs make   Growin’ Up   a big-time country album with a tip-jar-worthy intimacy” — Rolling Stone

“a superstar”— Billboard

“Take a voice that projects major-league virility but also vulnerability, sprinkle in some core-songwriting-team prowess with lyrical and musical hooks, and then most of all, don’t step on the agreeable, humble personality of somebody who—in contrast to a lot of the bro-country that’s been out there—seems like someone you wouldn’t mind having as an actual brother.”— Variety

“one of music’s mightiest voices and a hitmaking force arguably unlike any seen out of Nashville this century”— USA Today

“an uncharacteristically humble, down-to-earth, hardworking, fiercely loyal teddy bear of a country star…a true country-music behemoth”— Vulture

“Luke Combs isn't just a country star…he made an excellent case for being a top-tier pop star, regardless of genre.”— The Tennessean

“ Combs struts his usual guitar-heavy songs with a certain nuance ”— American Songwriter

A member of the Grand Ole Opry and a 6x CMA, 3x ACM, 3x  Billboard  Music Award-winner, Combs is in the midst of a record-setting and historic series of years. His previous release, What You See Ain’t Always What You Get , debuted at #1 on the all-genre B illboard  200 chart as well as  Billboard ’s Top Country Albums chart. With the record Combs reached #1 on  Rolling Stone ’s Top 200 Albums chart, Top 100 Songs chart and Artists 500 chart—the first country artist ever to lead all three charts in the same week and first to top the Artists 500. He also made history as the first artist ever to have their first two studio albums spend 25 weeks or more at #1 on  Billboard ’s Top Country Albums chart—breaking Taylor Swift’s previously held record at 24 weeks.

Things to Do

Music and concerts, music and concerts | concert review: luke combs lacked in stage presence, but delivered the hits, combs repeatedly thanked the audience and seemed overwhelmed by the adoration..

Luke Combs sings in concert.

No one is more surprised by Luke Combs’ rapid rise to the top of country music than Combs himself.

The 33-year-old from North Carolina filled U.S. Bank Stadium Saturday night and turned in what’s likely the least assuming performance the Vikings stadium has ever seen.

Before Combs took the stage with “Lovin’ on You,” the large screens showed a brief video of Combs, his friends and family all earnestly explaining the many reasons Combs shouldn’t have made it and marveling at the fact he did.

Combs introduced “Houston, We Got a Problem” with a story about growing up in a poor family. He took an airplane for the first time in 2015 and, the following year, a visit to Texas inspired the song. “Here we are eight years later,” he said, gesturing out to the stadium crowd. “This is unbelievable.”

I’m sure he tells a variation of that tale every night, but he sure sounded like he meant it. Combs repeatedly thanked the audience and seemed overwhelmed by the adoration.

For nearly two hours, Combs didn’t so much own the stage as he did rent it. His beefy, growling voice sounded great, but Combs didn’t have much presence. Clad in a Vikings cap, black button-down work shirt and jeans, Combs looked like plenty of guys in the audience, which he could easily get lost in if he wasn’t Luke Combs.

During most songs, Combs casually wandered around the massive stage, with either an acoustic guitar strapped to his chest or a Solo cup in his hand. (Each one of his mic stands had a cup holder.) When he did speak to the crowd, he stroked his famously unkempt beard.

So what, exactly, is Combs’ appeal? It’s his songs. Every one of 17 singles — from his 2016 debut “Hurricane” to his current cover version of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” — has hit the Top 5 in the country charts, with five making it all the way to the top. Combs makes ’90s-style country and he’s a strong writer and collaborator who largely steers clear of gimmicks and novelty.

By all rights, the crowd should have been rowdy. The party started with live music outside the stadium in the afternoon. Inside, a whopping four opening acts meant Combs didn’t take the stage until 9. It’s fair to say wide swaths of the audience were well lubricated.

Yet once Combs started singing, a hush fell over the room and all eyes turned to him. Some folks swayed or sang along, but everyone was listening to Combs’ every word, a rarity at a country show of this size.

The aforementioned “Fast Car” was a clear highlight. Combs called it one of his favorite songs and shared fond memories of listening to it as a kid with his dad in his truck. (He recently posted a photo of the actual Tracy Chapman cassette to social media.) He kept the arrangement simple and sang with the deepest emotion of the entire show.

Luke Combs Hangs With The Twins, Rocks Vikings Hat At U.S. Bank

Luke Combs was in Minnesota over the weekend for his current world tour, which had him headlining U.S. Bank Stadium on Saturday night (May 13th). Openers included Brent Cobb, Flatland Calvary, Lainey Wilson and Riley Green. It was incredible!

Being that he is a major sports fan, it is no surprise that Luke spent part of his time in the Twin Cities visiting the Minnesota Twins! He spent time with the team during a rain delay prior to his concert, shaking hands with the players and even rocking a Twins jersey, in true Minnesota fashion.

He didn't stop there! He even represented the Minnesota Vikings. He rocked a Vikings hat from the second he went onstage to the moment he left. He even led the crowd in a SKOL chant at one point, and said a member of his team was a massive fan of the Vikings. It looks like now he is too!

His show was amazing and he had the entire stadium packed to the brim. It was all made even better by the fact that he was rocking some Vikings merch. You basically have to if you are headlining the Vikings stadium, right? See photos from his epic Minnesota weekend below.

The show capped off a busy weekend for Luke, who was at the ACM Awards in Frisco just a few days before his show in Minnesota. He went home empty-handed but I think the crowd on Saturday night made up for it!

The upcoming shows add to yet another triumphant year for Combs, who recently performed an unforgettable duet of “Fast Car” with Tracy Chapman during the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards, which Rolling Stone called “one of the all-time best collaborative performances in Grammy history.”

The performance was the culmination of a massive year for “Fast Car,” as Combs’ version of the song won Single of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards (with Chapman winning Song of the Year). It also spent five consecutive weeks atop Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and reached #1 on the Hot AC chart, the first song by a male solo artist to ever top both. The 2x Platinum single, which has garnered over 700 million global streams to date, also spent eighteen weeks in the top 5 of Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart, eight of which were spent at #2.

“Fast Car” is featured on Combs’ most recent album, Gettin’ Old—a companion to his acclaimed 2022 record, Growin’ Up. Produced by Combs, Chip Matthews, and Jonathan Singleton, Gettin’ Old further establishes Combs as one of music’s most authentic and powerful voices. Receiving widespread critical attention, Combs spoke with Esquire, who calls him, “the best country singer of his generation,” while Billboard declares, “his electrifying-yet-earthy voice soundtracking this time in his life as a husband, father, and entertainer at the top of his game.”

A Grand Ole Opry member and 9x CMA, 3x ACM, and 3x Billboard Music Award-winner, Combs has also partnered with Opry Entertainment Group to open a massive multi-level entertainment complex in downtown Nashville, expected to open this summer.

Luke Combs to host ‘Bootleggers Tailgate Party’ for ‘Grownin’ Up and Getting Old’ stadium tour

StarTribune

Review: country superstar chris stapleton shows it's about the conviction, not the showmanship.

Let the parade begin. Country stars are coming to U.S. Bank Stadium.

Kenny Chesney was expected. After all, he's country's king of stadium concerts (he's back again on May 4). But on Saturday, Chris Stapleton kicked off a run of three new country-affiliated stadium performers.

Stapleton may be one of the most award-winning country artists of the past decade (including 10 Grammys, three for country album of the year, two CMA Awards for top album and seven for best male vocalist) but he doesn't seem to have anything in common with the other new headliners, underground phenomenon Zach Bryan (Aug. 24) and best-selling bad-boy Morgan Wallen (June 20-21).

Stapleton, a 45-year-old straw-cowboy-hat-wearin' Kentuckian, lives in the intersection of blues and country, two cousins in the sense that they can plumb deep emotions in straightforward ways. Stapleton is a master of concision, in conversation, lyrics and music. On Saturday, he was a masterfully expressive blues-rock guitarist, equal parts finesse and fire but never flashy.

As with George Strait, it's not about the showmanship with Stapleton, it's about the songs, vocals and musicianship. The theater footlights and a proscenium curtain backdrop notwithstanding, this was about as frills-free as a stadium show gets.

Stapleton is not a physical performer, but he's forceful. He knows how to make his voice roar, growl and even purr real nice and pretty when he wants to. He owes a debt to R&B shouter Otis Redding and full-volume rocker John Fogerty.

For two hours Saturday, Stapleton sang with deepfelt conviction, unleashing his vocal power in the homestretch on "The Devil Named Music" and "Traveller," the title track of his 2015 debut album. His most impassioned vocal came on "Cold," the heartbreaking power ballad with painfully lonely blues guitar, elevating it to the night's high point. How often is a ballad the best moment at a stadium concert?

Stapleton showed an expressive vocabulary on guitar, with galloping on "White Horse," garage-rock flailing on "Second One to Know," slacker bass-heavy twang on "Might as Well Get Stoned," swampy chicken pickin' on "Hard Livin'," bent-note blues on "Worry B Gone," soulful caresses on "Think I'm in Love with You," rumbling blues-rock on "Nobody to Blame," a boozy bluesiness on "Tennessee Whiskey" and haunting twang rock on "The Devil Named Music."

Missing in action Saturday was Stapleton's wife, backup singer Morgane Stapleton, but on board in the six-man band was harmonica player Mickey Raphael, who is usually with Willie Nelson & Family.

Stapleton, who opened for Strait at the Vikings stadium in 2021, understands the impact of being an opening act in a stadium can have. For his All-American Road Show tour, he tapped Marcus King, a rising blues-rock guitar hero, and Lainey Wilson, one of Nashville's hottest artists who captured top album and entertainer of the year at last November's CMA Awards.

Even though Wilson gave a no-gimmicks performance, it was easy to see why she earned the entertainer of the year prize from her peers.

Wilson, 31, cut a striking figure on the stadium's big screens with her hippie-meets-Western aesthetic of turquoise, fringe, bell bottoms and platform shoes. She was engaging, encouraging and effervescent. And she seemed genuinely grateful about her recent ascent after 13 years in Nashville.

With her unapologetic Louisiana drawl, Wilson imparted wisdom in the empowering "Things a Man Oughta Know" and the confidence-inducing "Atta Girl" (which she introduced by reading a female fan's sign: "I am smart, I am beautiful, I am godly").

She poured her heart into the very mainstream "Country's Cool Again", the Western-flavored "Wildflowers and Wild Horses" (which was introduced by a guitarist playing an instrumental version of "Ghost Riders in the Sky") and "Wait in the Truck," her award-winning duet with Jelly Roll that was rendered as a solo acoustic guitar number enrapturing the suddenly silent 47,000 fans in the huge stadium. And she closed the knockout hourlong set by belting out a big note on her own hit "Heart Like a Truck."

After opening for both Stapleton and Luke Combs at the Vikings stadium in her only major Twin Cities appearances, Wilson is clearly ready to headline her own arena show.

Jon Bream has been a music critic at the Star Tribune since 1975, making him the longest tenured pop critic at a U.S. daily newspaper. He has attended more than 8,000 concerts and written four books (on Prince, Led Zeppelin, Neil Diamond and Bob Dylan). Thus far, he has ignored readers’ suggestions that he take a music-appreciation class.
