  • Trivia This play marks the first appearance of Cora and Mr. Brown since the play What's Done in The Dark(2008).
  • Goofs Cora tells Madea she's in her 50s. However, her grandson is graduating from law school. She would be too young to have a law-school-graduate grandson unless he finished college in his early teens. It would be more plausible if she were in her late 60s.

Tyler Perry ‘s Madea will take one last bow on August 27, when a filmed version of the character’s final stage tour premieres on BET+.

The subscription streaming outlet announced the release date Wednesday for Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play , which it bills as the “final stage run” for Madea. A press release said Perry, as Madea, “pulls together some of his audience’s favorite characters for a family gathering” in a performance lasting more than two hours. Perry is executive producer, directed and writer, in addition to his starring role.

Current events, including COVID-19, enter the scene. The live show was filmed in May, judging by a glimpse of the theater marquee in a promo for the special (watch it above). At one point, Madea separates two women who are about to hug each other. “Got that coronavirus going around!” she cracks.

Perry retired the signature character this year on stage, and last year in feature films. Eight installments in the Madea film franchise grossed more than $500 million. Perry is a part owner of BET+ and has been making much of his programming for ViacomCBS after signing a sweeping film and TV deal with Viacom in 2017.

“Tyler Perry’s Madea burst onto the scene and entered our hearts over 20 years ago and we are honored to share this final stage performance with BET+ subscribers,” BET+ GM Devin Griffin said. “Now, more than ever, is the time to celebrate family and unity and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play  does just that.”

Along with Perry, the cast includes Cassi Davis, David Mann, Tamela Mann, Kwaylon Rogers, Alexis Hollins, Anthony Lewis, Jacobi Brown, Ashlee B. Gillum, Walter H. Fauntleroy, RaVaughn Brown and Kendrick Mays.

Michelle Sneed and Mark Swinton are executive producers of the show for Tyler Perry Studios.

Next Time You Watch Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play, Pay Attention To The Table

Tamela Mann as Cora and Tyler Perry as Madea in Madea's Farewell Play

Screenwriter, director, actor and producer Tyler Perry has said goodbye to his long-beloved character, Madea, at least for the time being . Fans who did not get to see Madea’s Farewell Play on tour now have the opportunity to do so with a recording of the play ( yes, like Hamilton ) streaming on BET+. Whether the first viewing or revisiting, the cast has given a secret for fans to look out for.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play focuses on a family gathering in celebration of Madea’s great-grandson graduating from law school. In true Tyler Perry fashion , drama ensues, secrets are revealed and let me just say this is my favorite of all Madea’s appearances. I got to talk to the amazing husband and wife duo, David and Tamela Mann (Leroy and Cora Jean Simmons-Brown) for an interview with CinemaBlend, and they revealed why viewers should pay attention to the table when watching the stage play:

David: So some nights, people didn't realize - now that I tell you, you can go back and see it, look over at the table. When we're sitting at the table, we're having our own show. People don’t even know we were doing our own thing. So go look at the table and you'll see like, ‘Oh, they're laughing. They're talking about somebody out there.’Tamela: I did get fussed at a couple of times when Tyler was talking on the opposite side and we were at the table, then I would kind of be in my own little world, and he’d be like ‘pay attention!’David: 'Pay attention to the scene!' We had got a pad - don't you tell nobody this, now. We had got a pad and we were writing little notes to each other back and forth. So we were having our own show while the show was going on and we were enjoying it more than the audience.

The table that the Manns are referring to is the kitchen table on the set. Most of the play takes place inside the home, with the kitchen stage left and the living room stage right. If you stay focused on the group at the kitchen table, even (or especially) when the action and dialogue is in the living area, you’ll see what the Manns described above. And yes, he said not to tell, but I went back and watched myself and this is too good not to share!

Seeing the cast have such a good time on stage enhances their chemistry as they play off of one another’s energy, and makes for an even better experience for the audience. There are a few moments where Tyler Perry himself breaks character, and it doesn’t detract from the show in the least - it supports it! We get to see him in tears over his own jokes and ad-libbing with his co-stars , which showcases their talent in going off book and picking it right back up. Tamela and David Mann shared the following of the off-script moments:

Tamela: I don't throw in as much, but sometimes I may change a word or two and they’ll just feed off - take the setup, man. They take it and do something else with it and it makes me just break - I break character so much. I'm terrible. Forgive me. But it's so much fun for me to see and to be involved in. And when [Tyler Perry] laughs of courseDavid: It's contagious.Tamela: It’s just like a disease, and I really enjoy getting to see them laugh, but they know, normally they call me the cast audience member.

The best jobs are the ones that don’t feel like work because you’re having fun, right? Well this cast clearly had a good time putting Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play together and fans are sure to enjoy it. Not only is there the comedy, but there’s also a concert where Tamela Mann will saaang you straight to church, and the other cast members put their own spice on different musical numbers as well.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play is streaming exclusively on BET+ . What was your favorite joke (or moment, since that’s a hard ask)? Let me know in the comments! Did you catch the cast having their own little show at the table?

Tyler Perry's 'Madea Farewell Play': Meet Perry, Cassi Davis, David Mann and the cast from the show's 'final stage run'

Tyler Perry's Madea is returning to the screen one last time, with the filmed version of the character’s final stage tour premiering on BET+. Titled Tyler Perry’s 'Madea’s Farewell Play', the network is touting this release as the “final stage run” for Madea. A press release said Perry, as Madea, “pulls together some of his audience’s favorite characters for a family gathering” in a performance panning over two hours. The executive producer, director and writer, in addition to his starring role is also reportedly involving current affairs and the pandemic into the live show that was filmed in May and will perhaps present to us the new dynamics of cinema post this crisis. Here are all the faces, including Perry's to be expected in the film.

Tyler Perry ends “Madea Farewell Tour” where it all began

madea farewell tour cast

Tyler Perry’s Madea Farewell Play Tour will come to Atlanta’s famed Fox Theater for a five-night run on May 23rd and it’s shaping up to be an emotional ending for a journey that began in that very theater over twenty years ago.

It was the 1990s. Perry had produced and starred in his first play, I Know I’ve Been Changed , earlier in the decade in his adopted hometown of Atlanta, but audience reception was poor and the play quickly closed. It took six years of hard work and perseverance before Perry took a huge chance and a massive financial risk to put up the play once more, this time at Atlanta’s historic Fox Theater . The former 1920’s movie-palace-turned-staged-theater quickly sold out and the buzz about Perry’s play spread. That energy lead to a tour across the southern United States that lasted two years and launched Perry’s prolific career.

madea farewell tour cast

Mabel “Madea” Simmons wasn’t a part of the cast of characters that made up I Know I’ve Been Changed but she was certainly developing. A dependable and universally loved anchor for Perry’s entertainment empire, Madea would find herself in multiple stage plays and feature films over the next twenty years. A generation has grown up with her and now that the-much-written-about good-bye tour is here, there seems no better place to drop the final curtain than the stage where Perry walked into our collective creative consciousness.

As mentioned here before, when one door closes, many others open and it’s never been truer when looking at the immense creative runway in front of Perry. A new partnership with Viacom and BET will see a production pipeline of fresh content for years to come and his deal with Paramount Pictures promises more for his fans on the big screen as well. Perry also hasn’t been shy about expressing his want to stretch his acting chops further with more roles like last year’s VICE , a move that saw him play a pivotal role in the Oscar-nominated film as Gen. Colin Powell.

An individual in constant creative motion, Perry is near completion of a dream that started on that stage so many years ago. The 330 acre Tyler Perry Studios is the realization of that dream. The first African-American owned feature film and television studio, and the largest of its kind in the eastern US, TPS is the future Perry’s creative vision.

Get your tickets to the Fox Theater Atlanta shows here … but you better hurry!
