A freewheeling portrait of Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster’s fabled road trip across America in the legendary Magic Bus. In 1964, Ken Kesey, the famed author of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” set off on a legendary, LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World’s Fair. He was joined by “The Merry Band of Pranksters,” a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac’s “On the Road,” and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus.

Sundance 2011: MAGIC TRIP Review

Magic Trip review. At the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Matt reviews Alex Gibney and Allison Ellwood's documentary Magic Trip.

Did you know that people in the 60s dropped acid and it was a really popular time for the psychedelic drug?  I did and most likely you did too.  Magic Trip follows the road trip of author Ken Kesey and his “Merry Band of Pranksters” as they drove across America and did lots of drugs.  What was gleamed from this grand experience?  Did they better understand the heart of America during the 1960s?  Did they learn the strengths and limitations of the counterculture movement?  Did they uncover any truths about themselves?  The answer to all of these questions is “No.”  They did, however, discover that doing loads of psychedelic drugs is awesome.  Not surprisingly, watching the home movies of a group of uninteresting, self-serving quasi-hippies while they regale you with stories of their 1964 summer vacation isn’t fascinating, insightful, or rewarding.

In the aftermath of the Kennedy assassination and with the coming of the World’s Fair to New York, Ken Kesey decided to assemble a group of friends and travel across the U.S. while doing loads of LSD.  Kesey had first been exposed to the drug during his time at Stanford when it was being used in experiments whose stated purpose was to study its affect on anxiety and depression (it was actually being studied by the CIA as possible interrogation tool).  In the film’s best scene, co-directors Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood craft a bravura animation sequence set to Kesey’s recording of himself while he was high out of his mind on acid.  Kesey was a true believer in the power of the drug and saw himself as an explorer on a new wave of consciousness.

And since explorers usually don’t go solo, he brought along a group of friends who we never really get to know.  We’re never really told about how most of the “Merry Pranksters” were connected to Kesey or why they chose to sign up for this psychedelic journey.  Aside from Kesey, the group’s most notable member was Neal Cassady who was the basis for Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road .  The group (or at least the men) dressed themselves up in red, white, and blue in order to celebrate America, but like almost everything they seem to do, it seems more like a celebration of themselves.  They bought a school bus, painted it up with psychedelic patterns and colors, and named the bus “Further”.  Once the trip begins, everyone gets little nicknames (e.g. “Stark Naked”, “Zonker”) and then they shot a bunch of footage even though no one knew how to use a camera or sound equipment.

The result is a compilation of the video mashed with voice-over audio (it was never recorded in sync) as well as the surviving Pranksters talking off-camera about their non-adventure.  The big problem with the celebration of the gang’s partying is that it can never properly be conveyed through cinema and in fact, the objective camera shows them for what they truly are.  In one scene, one of the Pranksters recalls how during a trip, she went into slimy water and felt that the algae was calling to her and pulling her deeper into their world.  The film sets this narration against a beautiful image of a submerged camera in vibrant blue water.  Then we cut back to the actual footage and see a chick covered in slime.  Despite their attempts to explain a transcendent experience, it always comes up short and the closest the film comes to conveying the psychedelic experience is when it animates Kesey’s recording of his first trip on LSD.

Kesey and the Pranksters remark that they “were too young to be beatniks and too old to be hippies.”  They also weren’t eloquent enough to be beatniks and not politically conscious enough to be hippies.  Ultimately, the group comes away looking like a gang that was conscious of their image, but never to its meaning.  Despite the turbulence of the times, they weren’t activists.  The Pranksters were eye-catching, but not noteworthy because they didn’t affect any change or even attempt to.  While they want to claim they were responsible for rise in LSD use in America, there’s no conclusive evidence that they were founders of any real movement that wouldn’t have come about naturally on its own during a time when use of many different drugs were becoming prevalent.  Why should Kesey get more attention than any other group of acid-trippers of the 1960s?  Because he was a literary star and had a sweet ride.

At its best, Magic Trip is nothing more than a vivid historical snapshot of a small group of people engaging in drug-related activities during the summer of 1964.  Unfortunately, it’s a photo we’ve all seen many times before.

Okla. tourist faces Caribbean prison after ammunition found in carry-on

An american tourist could spend 12 years in turks and caicos prison for carrying ammunition in carry-on luggage, by de'anthony taylor and meredith land • published april 24, 2024 • updated 3 hours ago.

A Fort Worth woman and her two children are coping with a new reality after her husband was detained in Turks and Caicos following the discovery of ammunition in his carry-on bag .

Ryan and Valerie Watson, who now live in Oklahoma, left for the Turks and Caicos Islands on April 7 to celebrate Ryan and two friends' 40th birthdays. They were returning from vacation when the incident occurred.

When the couple went through security for their flight, their carry-on was flagged and searched. Officials then found a Ziploc bag with four bullets.

According to Valerie, the bullets were mistakenly still in the bag after her husband had been hunting the weekend before.

The Watsons were questioned and charged with possession of ammunition. Valerie was released, and her charges were dropped after she had been detained on the island for days.

NBC 5's Meredith Land spoke with Watson on Wednesday about how her kids, ages 7 and 9, were coping with their father's absence.

"This is just our reality. So I've been honest in the best way as a mom to young kids to explain what is happening," said Watson.

"They knew that Daddy was in jail because we talked to them about their emotions, watching them try to handle their big emotions. Yesterday was really difficult for me."

In Turks and Caicos, carrying ammunition is a serious offense that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years in prison. In September 2023, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a  travel alert warning Americans  after a tourist from Indiana got an eight-month prison sentence for possession of ammunition.

"When you realize what it was, in the back of my mind, I was thinking it was me, and that I had too much liquid or my perfume bottle was too big or something. And they showed us what it was, and immediately, my heart just sank and I had a pit in my stomach. We are in a foreign country, and I don't know what their rules and laws are," she said.

"I have a lot of help because I know that this is part of God's plan for us," said Watson.

The wife and mother also revealed that two U.S. senators from Oklahoma and the governor are writing "good character" letters on her husband's behalf, but there are no guarantees. The family is now waiting for the situation to be resolved.

Man, dog disappear in Grand Canyon after apparently taking homemade raft on Colorado River

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: April 25, 2024 / 12:35 PM EDT / CBS News

A man and his dog are missing after apparently taking a homemade wooden raft on the river that runs through the Grand Canyon , the National Park Service said Wednesday.

The man was identified by park officials in a news release as Thomas L. Robinson of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Robinson abandoned his vehicle at Lees Ferry , a fishing and boat launching point in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The site is often used as a launch for for whitewater rafting trips along the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, according to park officials.

screen-shot-2024-04-25-at-8-18-52-am.png

A photo of the raft that it is believed Robinson used to attempt to travel down the river with his small dog shows just a few long planks assembled together, along with a paddle and life vest.

screen-shot-2024-04-25-at-8-19-04-am.png

A missing persons investigation is ongoing, the park service said. Anyone with information about Robinson or who may have seen him is asked to contact the Grand Canyon Dispatch Center.

Robinson is described as a 5'10" White man with brown hair and hazel eyes. The dog is a white 11-year-old Welsh Corgi, according to the NPS.

The Colorado River runs nearly 1,500 miles, from the Rocky Mountains to Mexico, according to American Rivers , a site that catalogues information about the nation's waterways. In the Grand Canyon, the river continues to deepen and widen in the national landmark, according to the NPS . Whitewater rafting is common in the river.

Water flowing down the Colorado River from Glen Canyon takes fewer than three days to reach Lake Mead, according to CBS affiliate KLAS-TV.
